- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is a Tuesday.
- 0:15It's the 20th of January already.
- 0:19My goodness, didn't I just say Happy New Year like 4 minutes
- 0:22ago? But here we are.
- 0:23It's the 20th of January and we are continuing in this journey
- 0:28of parables in Luke. And I think there are 14
- 0:31different parables and this week, boy, we are getting
- 0:34through a fair chunk of them. And today we are going to read a
- 0:37couple of parables and these parables centre around the theme
- 0:40of wise use of our resources. And this first one, the parable
- 0:46of the shrewd manager Boy. It has caused a lot of
- 0:49controversy as theologians debate backwards and forwards
- 0:52about what Jesus meant and how best to understand it.
- 0:56And no overwhelming consensus has yet been reached.
- 1:00So why don't we just take it at face value?
- 1:02And that as Paul has gathered these stories together from
- 1:06Jesus ministry, he shares them with his friend Theophilus and
- 1:09with us. And as with some other stories
- 1:12that Jesus told, not always using the most virtuous
- 1:15characters to get the point across, that here we've got this
- 1:19character and it's not about his morality that Jesus interested,
- 1:23but it's about his shrewd behaviour, planning for the time
- 1:27to come. So let us settle in, Holy
- 1:30Spirit, open our hearts so that we can hear your truth through
- 1:34these parables as Jesus shared them through the ages with us.
- 1:39May we know you more. All right, friends, let's read
- 1:44together Luke chapter 16. Jesus told this story to his
- 1:58disciples. There was a certain rich man who
- 2:01had a manager handling his affairs.
- 2:03One day a report came that the manager was wasting his
- 2:06employers money. So the employer called him in
- 2:09and said, what's this I hear about you Get your report in
- 2:13order because you are going to be fired.
- 2:17The manager thought to himself, what now?
- 2:19My boss has fired me. I don't have the strength that
- 2:22dig ditches and I'm too proud to beg.
- 2:25Ah, I know how to ensure I'll have plenty of friends who will
- 2:29give me a home when I'm fired. So he invited each person who
- 2:33owed money to his employer to come and discuss the situation.
- 2:37He asked the first one, how much do you owe him?
- 2:41The man replied, I owe him 800 gallons of olive oil.
- 2:45So the manager told him, take the bill and quickly change it
- 2:48to 400 gallons. How much do you owe my employer?
- 2:53He asked the next man. I owe him 1000 bushels of wheat,
- 2:56was the reply. Here the manager said, take the
- 3:00bill and change it to 800 bushels.
- 3:03The rich man had to admire the dishonest Rascal for being so
- 3:07shrewd. And it is true that the children
- 3:10of this world are more shrewd in dealing with the world around
- 3:13them than are the children of light.
- 3:16Here's the reason. Use your worldly resources to
- 3:19benefit others and make friends. Then when your possessions are
- 3:23gone, they will welcome you to an eternal home.
- 3:27If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in
- 3:31large ones. But if you are dishonest in
- 3:34little things, you won't be honest with greater
- 3:36responsibilities. And if you are untrustworthy
- 3:40about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches
- 3:43of heaven? And if you are not faithful with
- 3:46other people's things, why should you be trusted with
- 3:49things of your own? No one can serve 2 masters, for
- 3:53you will hate 1 and love the other.
- 3:56You will be devoted to 1 and despise the other.
- 3:59You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.
- 4:03The Pharisees, who dearly loved their money, heard all this and
- 4:07scoffed at him. Then he said to them, You like
- 4:10to appear righteous in public, that God knows your hearts.
- 4:15What this world honours is detestable in the sight of God.
- 4:20Until John the Baptist, the law of Moses and the message of the
- 4:23prophets were your guides. But now the good news of the
- 4:27Kingdom of God is preached and everyone is eager to get in.
- 4:31But that doesn't mean that the law has lost its force.
- 4:34It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the
- 4:38smallest point of God's law to be overturned.
- 4:42For example, a man who divorces his wife and marries someone
- 4:45else commits adultery, and anyone who marries a woman
- 4:48divorced from her husband commits adultery.
- 4:53Jesus said there was a certain rich man who was splendidly
- 4:58clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in
- 5:02luxury. At his gate lay a poor man named
- 5:05Lazarus, who was covered with sores.
- 5:09As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man's
- 5:12table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores.
- 5:16Finally the poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit
- 5:20beside Abraham at the heavenly banquet.
- 5:23The rich man also died and was buried, and he went to the place
- 5:27of the dead. There in torment, he saw Abraham
- 5:31in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.
- 5:34The rich man shouted, Father Abraham, have some pity.
- 5:38Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water
- 5:43and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.
- 5:48But Abraham said to him, Son, remember that during your
- 5:52lifetime you had everything you wanted and Lazarus had nothing.
- 5:57So now he is here being comforted, and you are in
- 6:00anguish. And besides there is a great
- 6:04chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you
- 6:08from here and no one can cross over to us from there.
- 6:13Then the rich man said, please Father Abraham, at least send
- 6:17him to my father's home, for I have 5 brothers and I want him
- 6:21to warn them so that they don't end up in this place of torment.
- 6:25But Abraham said Moses and the prophets have warned them.
- 6:29Your brothers can read what they wrote.
- 6:32The rich man replied, No, father Abraham, but if someone is sent
- 6:37to them from the dead, then they will repent of their sins and
- 6:40turn to God. But Abraham said if they won't
- 6:44listen to Moses and the prophets, they won't be
- 6:47persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.
- 7:00Our Lord, in both of these parables we hear your message
- 7:05about our goods and our wealth and our possessions and our
- 7:09resources here, not being just for our life here, but being for
- 7:14your eternal Kingdom. Lord, as we make decisions about
- 7:19how we use what we have, about where we invest our time and our
- 7:23energy, and about how we hold on to our possessions.
- 7:27Lord, I just pray that you lift our eyes from the temporal
- 7:32around us to see your eternity, to see the long game, to see
- 7:39that you bless us with these resources so that we can bless
- 7:43others, so that we, yes, can care for ourselves and our own,
- 7:48but then look to the needs of others and share what you have
- 7:52given us so generously. Lord, help us always see all
- 7:55that we have as a gift from you given to us so that we can be
- 8:01generous with that gift in giving to others.
- 8:05So Lord, soften our hearts and make us more like you.
- 8:10And we thank you for the many, many blessings that you do give
- 8:14us. We love you and we thank you.
- 8:18And we pray all of this in your wonderful name, Amen.
