Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: Another poll, same discontent, Winston still standing
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So another poll, another rush of fevered opinion, and yet
- 0:03Speaker 1: still so far away from an election. The pole business
- 0:07Speaker 1: is booming. Once upon a time we used to have
- 0:09Speaker 1: the two TV networks in the game, but now they've
- 0:11Speaker 1: been joined by others, keeping the opinion writers in business
- 0:14Speaker 1: and Politics as the leading news driver in this country.
- 0:18Speaker 1: So this one was paid for by the Taxpayers Union,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and A breathlessly reports that New Zealand First is on
- 0:23Speaker 1: the rise. It is now the third most popular party.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Winston maybe eighty, but it looks like he's here to stay.
- 0:29Speaker 1: And the two major parties are pretty equal at thirty
- 0:31Speaker 1: odd each. There seems to be no dominant party right
- 0:34Speaker 1: now in New Zealand. And other than that, the other
- 0:36Speaker 1: takeaway is that we don't really like the leaders of
- 0:38Speaker 1: the major parties. Both leaders have popularity rankings less than
- 0:43Speaker 1: twenty percent. That could be because they're both demonstrably a
- 0:48Speaker 1: bit average. Now that is particularly concerning for National and
- 0:52Speaker 1: the Prime Minister who learns that eighty percent of the
- 0:54Speaker 1: New Zealanders don't raise them as a PM And why
- 0:58Speaker 1: is this? I think it reflects a d disase about
- 1:01Speaker 1: where the country finds itself. In a week where we
- 1:04Speaker 1: found that we grew not one jot in the last
- 1:06Speaker 1: financial quarter. People are wondering why we've got so stuck
- 1:09Speaker 1: in the mayre. Now. National's easy answer at the last
- 1:12Speaker 1: election in this past eighteen months is that Labour's useless.
- 1:16Speaker 1: But eighteen months International's governmance, I feel people are still
- 1:19Speaker 1: wondering where we're going and where that Maybe they're a
- 1:21Speaker 1: bit useless too, And I blame politics and the urge
- 1:26Speaker 1: to and the urge to politicize every issue and to
- 1:29Speaker 1: polarize the voters. Our current default position from all our
- 1:34Speaker 1: politicians is the other side is crap. Vote for us.
- 1:38Speaker 1: But I think the country are saying, Ye're both crap.
- 1:41Speaker 1: There is no truth teller out there leading the way
- 1:44Speaker 1: through the merk and in this vacuum of leadership, Winston
- 1:48Speaker 1: shines by just doing the basics as a foreign minister
- 1:52Speaker 1: well and not being demonstrably useless. For more fam Earlily
