- 0:08Hey, it's time for another exciting episode of Two Shot
- 0:10Tuesday and we have got just the two guys to bring it to you.
- 0:13My name is Jason Riley and with me as always my Co host Barry T
- 0:17Nixon. Barry, how are you doing this
- 0:20evening? I'm doing just fine, Jay, as
- 0:22long as I keep my hands where they should be and not flailing
- 0:25about potentially A snagging cords.
- 0:28Yeah, life is good, my friend. Life is very good.
- 0:30Whatever you snag off cameras, up to you, but thank you on
- 0:35camera. We got to talk about something
- 0:36important because we are recording this a bit earlier
- 0:38than when it's going to be released because we're getting
- 0:40around some trips that we've got coming up.
- 0:42So we have just come through. It's now a few weeks in, in the
- 0:45past for many of our listeners and viewers.
- 0:48Snowmageddon, you could call it Snowmageddon, Toronto's heaviest
- 0:52snowfall in history, and you and I both survived it.
- 0:55Barry, how did you get by with Snowmagdon?
- 0:59It was actually pretty easy living in a condo.
- 1:01Yeah. You just sort of, you just shut
- 1:04the door and that's it. And it just kind of goes away.
- 1:06I don't have to do any shoveling.
- 1:08I didn't have to do anything. I didn't have to take the car
- 1:10out. I mean, Linda and I stocked up
- 1:12in advance of Snowmageddon. So I opened the fridge.
- 1:15It was loaded with food. The liquor cabinet is is always
- 1:19well stocked in The Newsroom, as you well know.
- 1:21But it was even more. It was almost like in
- 1:23preparation for end of days. So we were good.
- 1:27We had we had no problem at all. How about you?
- 1:29Had you? Well you did send me a picture
- 1:31of after you were shoveling at the mini mansion and that snow
- 1:33bank was cute, the same height as you.
- 1:36And now it's taller than me, but it is.
- 1:38Yeah, We did not to get off as easy as vertical living.
- 1:42We were. There was plenty of shoveling.
- 1:43But just like you went out first thing in the morning, picked up
- 1:46some treats, some food and made sure that we were, you know,
- 1:49well, sugared up and salted up so that we got our fuel.
- 1:54Added up. Yeah, we just went out every
- 1:56couple of hours and we shoveled and every time we went out,
- 1:59there was more than the last time.
- 2:01Like it was always over our boots.
- 2:03There was tons of it. In fact, just today, we're now
- 2:05Tuesday. We're a couple days out.
- 2:07I finally carved out enough to reveal the entire width of our
- 2:10driveway. But it's the good thing is it's
- 2:12very light snow, so it's easy to throw around.
- 2:14But I was literally walking with shovels full because I couldn't
- 2:17throw any higher. I was, I'm out of height to be
- 2:20able to throw this stuff and we don't have a huge lawn.
- 2:22As you, you know, there's not been downtown Toronto, there's
- 2:25not a lot of huge lawns anyway. But we got through it and it was
- 2:28interesting. I'm glad we kept up with it all
- 2:30day. It was on Sunday.
- 2:31We just not many people were going out multiple times during
- 2:33the day, but we did and we stayed ahead of it.
- 2:36So we didn't have a gigantic amount to have to deal with.
- 2:38At once, I have a suggestion for a future upgrade to the Mini
- 2:42mansion. Are you ready for this?
- 2:43Yeah. A heated driveway.
- 2:45Your driveway is not that big, but if it were heated, it would
- 2:49eliminate this madness of multiple shovels in a day and
- 2:52you and all could just be sitting looking out of your
- 2:54window laughing at your neighbors who are having to
- 2:57suffer through. I wonder what that would cost.
- 2:59Let me go ahead and get you a quote and then you can, you
- 3:01know, decide on it. Maybe for the next couple of
- 3:03years. It might be something you might
- 3:04want to look at because you don't have a huge driveway.
- 3:07It's huge. What do you mean guys?
- 3:08It's massive. It's so long.
- 3:10You're only thinking of the front part.
- 3:11There's the entire back part that has to melt in that you
- 3:14could fit 4 cars on this thing. Four cars, I think.
- 3:17You're very deep. You obviously haven't walked
- 3:19down the side of my house. Maybe we'll we'll talk about
- 3:22this another time because we're we're.
- 3:23Offline but I think it's a great idea for a future addition to
- 3:27the mini mansion as you age Jay when you when you're 70 you're
- 3:31not going to want to be shoveling unless you want to pay
- 3:32a neighborhood kid trouble is there are no kids in your area
- 3:35it's mostly older we're. The kids.
- 3:38Yeah, yeah. Yeah, anyway, so.
- 3:40Anyway, maybe if you want to get into our PayPal or our Patreon
- 3:44account, you can help contribute toward this heated driveway
- 3:47ambition that Barry has for me. I.
- 3:49Would be happy to make the first donation.
- 3:51We've got a format on the show, and before we leap into some
- 3:54huge movie reviews that we're going to cover off today, let's
- 3:58go to shot #1 Barry, what do you?
- 3:59Have for us. I'm pretty much this is maybe
- 4:03two or three shots left to go of the 12 year from Bushmills.
- 4:07It's a fabulous whiskey. As you know, I can't get enough.
- 4:10That's what I'm having. What about yourself, Jay?
- 4:11I'm going to crack open a fresh can of Fuse 0 Sugar Iced Tea.
- 4:17Let me tell our viewers and listeners that as we record
- 4:19this, it is January 27th. This is the final Tuesday of dry
- 4:23January, which I have been doing for the entire month
- 4:25successfully. Unbelievable.
- 4:27Man, you really do deserve kudos for that.
- 4:29While your January has been dry my and it has been absolutely
- 4:33sopping wet and and here's to you.
- 4:36And. Our and you.
- 4:40Delicious. I look forward to our upcoming
- 4:42hang out when I will be having alcohol in February when we get
- 4:47to meet and we go for potentially the best wings in
- 4:50the city. Is what you've found for.
- 4:51Yeah, it's a place called Crown and Dragon, if I remember
- 4:54correctly. And I saw yeah and I saw I came
- 4:58across on Instagram, I some guy uploaded Instagram reel and he
- 5:03was date showing the wings. They look insanely big and
- 5:06there's a bunch of sauces that I I know you will avoid like a
- 5:09plague, but I think you can get dry, you can get them sauce on
- 5:12the side I. Like the sauce.
- 5:13Just the right kind of sauce for me.
- 5:14Yeah, nothing white. It's got to be nothing.
- 5:16White. No.
- 5:17Dipping sauce? Yeah, no.
- 5:18No, no, no. Blue cheese dip, none of that
- 5:20ranch, no, no ranch, but Buffalo sauce, hot sauce, all that.
- 5:25Sign me up, bring me in for that.
- 5:27I'm good for that if it's OK. And some of it is breaded, some
- 5:30of those wings as well. So we're going to be looking
- 5:31forward to that. I know you don't like the bread
- 5:33it as much I do That's fine. That's where we differ and
- 5:35that's why we bring a full rounded perspective to the show.
- 5:38That's. What we do?
- 5:39That's what we do, Barry. I'm excited about this.
- 5:41I'm also excited to hear this special edition of 4K Corner
- 5:45Special, because you're talking about four KS.
- 5:48Yeah. I mean, it's probably people are
- 5:50tired of it, but I'm going to keep going.
- 5:52And I got a couple of new ones to to talk about and I have them
- 5:56right here just so you can see. First is Tim Burton's Pee Wee's
- 6:00Big Adventure, courtesy of our friends at Criterion.
- 6:03I say our friends, we don't know them, but I've made a lot of
- 6:05purchases, so I consider them to be friends now.
- 6:08Pee Wee's Big Adventure and then another classic, this one's from
- 6:11Arrow. And you know, I love my Arrow
- 6:12releases, Steven Seagal in Under Siege, also starring Tommy Lee
- 6:18Jones, which I forgot, and Gary Busey.
- 6:21So I mean, talk about a who's who of Hollywood.
- 6:25Where to begin, Jay? You also have something too, but
- 6:27we'll get to that in a SEC, right?
- 6:28Yes, we will, absolutely. Let's start.
- 6:31Yeah, yeah. And that was the one I was just
- 6:33holding up. So there is a notable amount of
- 6:36cheese in this movie that I had forgotten about, and probably
- 6:40for a good reason. Some of it is a little cringy.
- 6:43I can understand what you said to me once, like off camera,
- 6:47offline, that you weren't necessarily the biggest fan of
- 6:51Seagal in terms of his acting style.
- 6:53He's right. He can be a little bit wooden
- 6:56and he's a little bit wooden. He's kind of a one note guy in
- 6:58this movie. Like he he's no nonsense.
- 7:01He's fun, but he doesn't really have much like you're an actor.
- 7:04What's the word range? There's not a lot of range going
- 7:08on. And but that's fine.
- 7:09You know that that's what we signed up for with Under Siege
- 7:12is Tommy Lee Jones plays. He plays a cook, I thought.
- 7:15So he's kind of masquerading as a cook cook.
- 7:17What we come to to realize is that he's an ex like Green Beret
- 7:21kind of guy. Yeah.
- 7:23He had some trouble in Panama on one of the missions and was
- 7:27bumped down to head cook. And because he's friends with
- 7:30the captain of this vessel that he's currently cooking on, he
- 7:33got to be on board. And thank God he was, because
- 7:36Tommy Lee Jones leads the strike force to try to, you know,
- 7:40offload some nuclear missiles to a buyer that we don't really
- 7:44know who the buyer is. But I tell you, there's some
- 7:46pretty good action. The runtime even for this maybe
- 7:49could have been a couple of minutes shorter.
- 7:51What was it could have been? It could have been trimmed a
- 7:53touch. I still think it was around an
- 7:55hour 30, but I I could have done with 1120, maybe 122 if I'm
- 8:00being I'm being honest, overall fun.
- 8:02The transfer looks insane. It looks great.
- 8:05It looks insane. I.
- 8:07Mean it looks great that he cooks.
- 8:09It really does. And like, the interiors all look
- 8:11amazing. The sound is fantastic.
- 8:14The directing is pretty good. It's pretty tight.
- 8:16It does kind of move along in a good way, but again, I could
- 8:19have used maybe 8:00 or so minutes to be deducted, but
- 8:22that's so the. Pieces were good, but when it
- 8:25came together like a meal, maybe this wasn't the most appetizing
- 8:29meal or there was a bit too much on the plate is what you're
- 8:31saying? Yeah, or there was just a little
- 8:33too much vinegar in one of the dishes, you know, I don't know.
- 8:36It's just like eventually you're like, OK, also Tommy Lee Jones,
- 8:42he he's like obviously the the biggest star in it and the best
- 8:45performance, but he gets very wacky towards the end.
- 8:48Like he starts off kind of like this no nonsense terrorist guy.
- 8:52But then as the movie kind of wears on the last sequence, he,
- 8:57I don't know whether he suffered some kind of a complete mental
- 8:59breakdown, but he kind of behaves like he did when he
- 9:02played two faced in Batman Forever.
- 9:05That was over the top. Like, yeah.
- 9:07Let's go. Hey, hey, hey.
- 9:08And I'm just acting. I was just like, what is going
- 9:11on? What happened to this guy?
- 9:12Did he hit his head? Like did he try the soup or
- 9:15something and he didn't like it and he fucked up his brain?
- 9:17He's allergic to paprika or something.
- 9:19I don't know. But the point is that was a
- 9:21highlight. In fact, it was a highlight.
- 9:23I enjoyed that aspect of it. So it's worth a look.
- 9:26I mean, I wouldn't necessarily pay full price for it.
- 9:29If you're looking at a purchase, maybe wait for it to get down to
- 9:31that sweet spot of 1999 on Amazon.
- 9:34But full marks in terms of the score and the music or the
- 9:37sorry, the score in the picture. What?
- 9:40Was was great. Role did Gary Busey play?
- 9:43Was it is was that the buddy that ran the ship?
- 9:45The Captain. He wasn't, Yeah, actually, I
- 9:49can't remember whether he was the captain.
- 9:51Yeah, he was part of the strike force.
- 9:53So he was like masquerading as a good guy, and then suddenly he's
- 9:55like, yeah, I'm a double agent kind of guy, you know, That's
- 9:58every. Gary Busey role.
- 9:59Yeah, he turned the screws and they have this, you know, I
- 10:02don't know whether she's actually an ex Playboy model,
- 10:05blonde, short haired blonde girl.
- 10:07And so she gets out of a cake naked.
- 10:09You get to see see her boobs in it.
- 10:10So everyone loves that, but she's just kind of, I don't
- 10:13know, she's just along for the ride.
- 10:15She's like a piece of like Steven Seagal.
- 10:17She, she might as well just be his bag or, you know, his extra
- 10:20magazine because that's really all she kind of contributes to,
- 10:24which is unfortunate, but that's.
- 10:25It happened. That's how it goes.
- 10:27It happened in those days. Star rating, It's a solid.
- 10:31It's a solid solid. Jesus.
- 10:34Will I be rewatching it anytime soon?
- 10:36Probably not. Will I be trying to find ways to
- 10:39regift it to you? Probably be rebuffed, and
- 10:42rightly so. Might be.
- 10:44I think this is probably sitting around like a 2.8, maybe a
- 10:47three. I would be generous and say 3.
- 10:49It's not terrible. It's not terrible. .8 We don't
- 10:52do .8 of a *. Here, well, I was under.
- 10:54I didn't know what else to say. I just felt like that would that
- 10:57would sum it up anyway. A Steven Seagal under siege from
- 11:00Arrow. Check Underwhelmed if you wish
- 11:02to. OK, that's all I'll say.
- 11:04You got another one for us. I do, but before I get there,
- 11:07should we have our second shot, please, and then I'll quickly
- 11:10get through this. I won't spend as much time on
- 11:11this because you have something as well.
- 11:13I do. So let's go.
- 11:15I'm continuing on with the Bushmills and you J have
- 11:19something I'll have. Fuse 0 sugar.
- 11:22How is that by the way? Very good.
- 11:24One of my favorite iced teas. I quite enjoy it.
- 11:27Yeah, OK. I'm.
- 11:27Going to buy more. Here's to you.
- 11:29And here's to the end of your amazing journey through dry
- 11:33January. I can't even say it.
- 11:35You can't. All right, the next one.
- 11:41This is absolutely a delightful, fun, well paced, well directed,
- 11:46very actually funny movie. Yeah, and just has like so many
- 11:51adorable qualities and it holds up amazing.
- 11:54But that's how we're here to talk about necessarily the the
- 11:56the movie itself, the transfer. This is like a easily one of the
- 12:00best of well, I guess it's 20. It came out at the end of 25,
- 12:0425. This is definitely one of the
- 12:06better ones. It looks insanely good.
- 12:08The details in Pee Wee's house, because you know how it's a
- 12:10little chaotic, so a little eclectic in terms of style.
- 12:14Yeah. You see everything, everything,
- 12:17like things on the floor you didn't notice before.
- 12:19Things like when he's making the breakfast and the machines are
- 12:22all working, you see details you didn't see before.
- 12:25So it's insanely good transfer, as you'd expect from Criterion.
- 12:28And it was just a really fun revisit.
- 12:30I hadn't watched it in years and it just really clips.
- 12:34Like there's no spots where I was thinking, man, when is this
- 12:37going to wrap up? It's really good.
- 12:39And there's like, the jokes still hold up.
- 12:40Yeah, I, I loved it. I thought it was great.
- 12:42And I love Pee Wee. Nice.
- 12:44And you said adorable, which I think is great.
- 12:46The first time we've ever described anything on the show
- 12:48is adorable. And I think that that is that
- 12:50fits. I saw the movie not that long
- 12:52ago couple, excuse me, a couple years ago.
- 12:55So yeah, you're right, it holds up.
- 12:56We also saw the new one. He did a new one before he
- 12:59passed away. He did.
- 13:01I think Netflix, Yeah, like. OK, I haven't seen that one.
- 13:04It's. Really funny too.
- 13:05Like it's. Really funny.
- 13:06Yeah, he did it. I think it's on Netflix.
- 13:08I'm pretty sure it's on Netflix. OK.
- 13:10This is the perfect five out of five man.
- 13:11You could, you could show Pee Wee's Big Adventure to anyone.
- 13:15An 80 year old guy or woman would enjoy it as much as
- 13:18somebody who's 7. Like it really does.
- 13:20It's truly timeless. And yeah, Phil Hartman obviously
- 13:24pops up at the end. He makes a cameo and I just love
- 13:27it when they were like shooting the movie of Pee Wee's Big
- 13:29Adventure and they like dub his his voice.
- 13:31You know, they, they cast this sort of macho guy.
- 13:34It's just like it's just so good.
- 13:35And he's fighting ninjas in the movie at the end.
- 13:37But the whole thing is great. And you know the scene with him
- 13:40and when he's in like the the Tyrannosaurus Rex, like remember
- 13:44he, he goes to a diner and he, he doesn't have his wallet with
- 13:47him and so he has to wash dishes and he ends.
- 13:49Up meeting Simone. Yeah, yeah, Simone.
- 13:51And she's like, oh, watch the sunrise with me.
- 13:53So they go up inside this T Rex and they watch it and then the
- 13:56the boyfriend Andy comes and freaks out, Yeah.
- 13:59And chases them onto the train anyway.
- 14:00Very. Funny, good, good description.
- 14:02Great, great sequence. I just thought that was.
- 14:04Delightful it. Was so fun, nice, and then
- 14:07eventually, you know, there's a hobo on on board.
- 14:10He's singing songs and TV. Eventually gets so tired he just
- 14:12jumps off the train and boom, he happens to be in El Paso at the
- 14:16Alamo, which is convenient. That's where he was looking to
- 14:18go. Amazing. 5 out of five love it.
- 14:21There you go nice. Yep.
- 14:22All right before we wrap up, I've got one as well.
- 14:25It's not a 4K. This is a this is a total review
- 14:27episode, but I'm going I had to go Blu-ray on this one because
- 14:31it was a series from 1980. Barry, the When I said I placed
- 14:36this order, I sent you a text saying you're the first person
- 14:38that's going to see this and you're going to have no idea
- 14:41what I just bought. True to form, you've had no idea
- 14:44I. Picked up.
- 14:45A classic cartoon, Thundar the Barbarian The Warner Brothers
- 14:50Archive Collection in stunning Blu-ray.
- 14:54It was ran two seasons. Such a great show.
- 14:57When I was a kid, I didn't get it and I didn't love it, but I
- 15:00was reading the reviews about how great this Blu-ray was and
- 15:03it is totally cleaned up. It's kind of one of those
- 15:05cartoons where it's not so cutesy, like there's not a lot
- 15:07of jokes. They there's like death.
- 15:09There's So what happens is in 1994, the moon cracks and, and
- 15:14the entire world has laid waste. And then 2000 years later, now
- 15:18there's Barbarians and there's magicians.
- 15:21It's got kind of a Planet of the Apes kind of vibe to it.
- 15:23And there's Thunder and his he's got there's a like this, she's,
- 15:28she's a sorceress. And then there's this guy who's
- 15:30just kind of like the Chewbacca of the group.
- 15:32Because keep in mind, 1980 very Star Wars 5.
- 15:34Yeah, yeah, yeah. Every episode so far I've
- 15:37watched the 1st 8 episodes which is a lot for me to watch in one
- 15:39sitting as you know or. How long are they each?
- 15:42How long are they each? 20 minutes, 20 minutes without
- 15:44commercials. They always go somewhere where
- 15:46there's a destroyed like they were in destroyed Manhattan and
- 15:48then they were at a destroyed NASA center and then there was
- 15:51one where they were at the what's with the four presidents
- 15:54heads there that carved. Mount Rushmore.
- 15:56Mount Rushmore, they're on Mount Rushmore.
- 15:57It's all dilapidated. So they're always going
- 15:59somewhere where it's been somewhere from the old world.
- 16:01They were just in Vegas, Vegas. So they had a great time in
- 16:04Vegas. And so yeah, the recent, well,
- 16:07there were some, there were some shenanigans going on.
- 16:10But the reason I like it is there are classic comic book
- 16:13creators. Jack Kirby is 1.
- 16:15There's a guy, Alex Top, their tooth who created the show and
- 16:18they were classic comic book characters.
- 16:20And so you can just see the imagination.
- 16:22The style comes through. And yeah, it was taken pretty
- 16:24seriously. So as a kid I didn't get it so
- 16:26much because I liked kind of the funnier type stuff.
- 16:28And there's but now I super appreciate it.
- 16:31I loved it. And I'm going to blast through
- 16:32the rest of this. Oh, so that's the complete
- 16:34series, both seasons 1 and 2 and that's that.
- 16:37Is it 16 by 9 or you got the black bars on the right and the
- 16:40left? Is it a four by three?
- 16:41Present. That's how it was originally
- 16:43presented, so they presented the original aspect ratio.
- 16:46Just like I love that Forte. That's amazing.
- 16:48I like that. Yeah, me too.
- 16:50I like to watch it the way it was meant to be watched, even if
- 16:52I'm not getting all the TV. It was a square TV at the time
- 16:55and it fits that. Just perfectly amazing.
- 16:58Well, I think that's our episode for this week, Jay, like you
- 17:00said, total review heavy. We both brought something to the
- 17:03table this week and I think our audience got something out of
- 17:06this. I hope so anyway.
- 17:08And if you're thinking Pee Wee, just go ahead and blind by.
- 17:11If you've never seen it blind by.
- 17:13I wouldn't say the same thing for Under Siege.
- 17:14I would say blind rent, but you know.
- 17:18Blind Rent. The light is yellow, so just you
- 17:20exercise caution. And Thunder 5 out of five.
- 17:23I'm giving it. So if you like classic cartoons,
- 17:26you could do a lot worse than treat yourself to this Thunder
- 17:28the Barbarian 3 disc set. Amazing.
- 17:31All right, thank you very much for being with us audience.
- 17:33And we'll be with you again next week.
- 17:34Jay, have a hell of an evening and I can't wait to get together
- 17:37with you to end the fasting of alcohol that you've been on.
- 17:43I'm not sure if that's the right term or phrase, but doesn't
- 17:45matter. We'll see you soon.
