- 0:00Hello and welcome to today's episode of Thrive After 45.
- 0:06I'm Denise Drinkwalter, midlife mentor and mirror, and every week I am so honored to share energy and space with inspiring guests whose stories reflect so many possibilities of thriving beyond 45.
- 0:23Together we'll uncover the whispers of the heart, the power of midlife transformation, and the wisdom that fuels expansion, because when one woman turns her light on, the rest of the room catches fire.
- 0:42What if the thing keeping you home isn't the cost of the ticket or the language you don't speak or the fear of getting lost, but simply the belief that someone else has to plan it for you first?
- 1:01For 37 years, our guest today has been proving that belief is wrong.
- 1:09She sets foot in 100 countries across five continents, not on sabbatical, not between jobs, but while working full-time as a health data specialist for over 20 years, she kept boarding planes, kept figuring things out on the ground, and kept coming home with more confidence than she had left with.
- 1:34For a stretch of that career, she ran her own travel agency, helping more than 300 people plan and execute those trips that they've been putting off, and then she started noticing something.
- 1:48The women who came to her didn't just need a booking.
- 1:54They needed to actually believe that they could do this themselves.
- 1:59So in 2022, Maria stepped away from employment and stepped fully into travel coaching, not planning itineraries for her clients, but handing them the tools, the confidence, and the self-awareness to plan their own trips on their own terms.
- 2:24She has already gli- guided close to 20 women from,"I don't know how to do this," to,"I know exactly what I'm doing." It is an honor and a privilege to welcome an ICF certified travel coach and bodacious adventurer, Maria Camus.
- 2:46Welcome to our show today.
- 2:49Thank you.
- 2:49Thank you.
- 2:50I'm so honored to be here.
- 2:52Thank you, Denise.
- 2:54Can you help us understand how people think about travel- collectively?
- 3:05What is something that comes through collectively when you hear people say,"I wanna travel"?
- 3:11Because honestly, isn't that the dream, right?
- 3:14I wanna- Yes, indeed finish my job and I wanna be able to travel.
- 3:17We all say it.
- 3:18What does that really mean?
- 3:20Wow.
- 3:21And that's a great question, because it doesn't matter where we are in the world, what stage of life, and particularly women.
- 3:31Travel is for the wealthy or those who have a lot of time, very brave and courageous, and smart too.
- 3:44Um, and, uh, people who are adventurous.
- 3:47Just, just about all powerful things about a person that is not them themselves.
- 3:54So it's for those other people.
- 3:57It's for the foreigners, especially for us in Africa with the, what we say are all the challenges of life.
- 4:05Yeah.
- 4:05There are no challenges anywhere else in the world.
- 4:08And it's just, yeah, for those others.
- 4:12It's for those others, not me.
- 4:14So how do we begin if we have this idea that I wanna travel, and you probably hear this a fair amount.
- 4:23Mm.
- 4:23I wanna travel when I'm retired, because then- Oh, yes I will have the time and the freedom.
- 4:28Yes.
- 4:30And yeah, that too.
- 4:31I didn't put that in the category.
- 4:32That's okay.
- 4:33Yes, for those who are retired.
- 4:34Yeah.
- 4:35For those who are older.
- 4:36And then when they get older, they say,"No, I'm too old now.
- 4:40It's..." It- I love what you're saying.
- 4:43Let's tap into that further, because we put it out there and say,"This is when I have the time.
- 4:50This is when it's the dream." And then when the dream opportunity is in front of you,"Well- Yeah my knee gave out, and- Yeah I'm afraid of my ba-" So how do we actually, when we say these words,"I'm going to travel," how do we actually move the needle so that begins to happen for us?
- 5:08'Cause I'm sure there's a lot of us in the audience that are like,"I'd love to travel, but can't, can't," right?
- 5:15Yes.
- 5:16Wow.
- 5:17The first step really is to realize that if you enjoy doing something, the best time to do it is now.
- 5:27It's not for tomorrow.
- 5:28It's not for next week.
- 5:29Think of you like sports, you like interacting with socially, you like gardening.
- 5:37Yeah.
- 5:38You like the things that give you joy- Mm-hmm especially outside of work, especially beside our what we may consider mundane or routine day-to-day lives of taking care of everyone around us, be- working hard at our jobs, in our social communities, in church.
- 5:59If travel is your thing, and I emphasize this because travel is not for everyone.
- 6:03It's one of those we'd all like to.
- 6:06It's what is all in our faces, but it's not necessarily what everybody enjoys.
- 6:12Yeah.
- 6:12And certainly not in the same way and the same style.
- 6:14Mm-hmm.
- 6:14So first thing is better now when you have the energy.
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:20And the first thing for women particularly is give yourself permission.
- 6:25Allow yourself to dream and identify yourself with that dream, associate with it without apology, and then little actions towards your desires.
- 6:42I keep telling people,"You're not moving out of home.
- 6:45You just take- You're stepping away.
- 6:48You're taking a few days.
- 6:50You're not, what, running away from your life, from your family, from your work.
- 6:56You're just taking a break to do something that gives you joy, and then you step back." Yeah.
- 7:06So give yourself permission, embrace it, talk about it, it's a joy.
- 7:12Yeah.
- 7:13And then take that step, you know- Love that to start acting towards it.
- 7:18Yeah.
- 7:20So many things in what you just shared right there.
- 7:22So brilliant.
- 7:23It- you're not leaving and everything is, you're not selling s- lock, stock, and barrel, and that's it, now I can never return.
- 7:32Any d- choice and decision we make in life, right?
- 7:36Yeah.
- 7:36We get to,"You know what?
- 7:38That didn't work out." Mm-hmm.
- 7:39"I'm gonna go back to..." We have the power to make those decisions, and as we talk about in our show all the time, you're doing this for you, by you, because of you, right?
- 7:50Absolutely.
- 7:50Yes.
- 7:50Yeah.
- 7:51Yeah.
- 7:51Absolutely.
- 7:52Yes.
- 7:52It's for you.
- 7:54Yeah.
- 7:54Yes.
- 7:55It's You take, especially women, we take care of everybody else.
- 8:00We take care of everyone else's needs.
- 8:02What, what about you?
- 8:04Mm.
- 8:04In fact, when Mommy or Auntie or Sister is doing well, everybody else does well.
- 8:11Take care of yourself first.
- 8:13And it's so interesting that in many circumstances, people use the example of the emergency advice given on planes when you travel.
- 8:24Yes.
- 8:24In the unlikely event of an emergency and the oxygen thingies that come down- Yeah.
- 8:33attend to yourselves first- Yeah before you attend to anyone else, not even if it is your child, because you take care of you first, and this, we're talking seconds.
- 8:45Take care of yourself first, then take care of the others.
- 8:47So the same thing in travel.
- 8:50Take g- care of yourself.
- 8:52You're not asking for months, years away, just a short while- Yeah and then you get back and take care of everyone else.
- 9:00What do you notice is one of the hardest things, the most challenging things for women when they want to m- to take time away and do w- one travel, not travel-travel for the year or anything.
- 9:18Just what is the hardest thing, the most challenging thing that they have to come to, quote-unquote, terms with in order to be able to take that trip?
- 9:27Good question.
- 9:29I think the, the hardest thing is accepting that people will be okay while you're away, number one, and number two- People will be okay with your decision once they know that you have made that decision.
- 9:52People adjust to you, not you to them.
- 9:56Ooh.
- 9:57And women find that very difficult to- Yeah to realize because they don't do it enough for, for things outside the normal.
- 10:08There's a way mommy does things in the house, and once mommy has said,"This is the way it's gonna go," yeah?
- 10:12If you're assertive in the workplace, you're assertive, but for themselves, women find it very difficult to use that assert- Mm-hmm for themselves.
- 10:21Yes.
- 10:21That it's interesting that if it is a work assignment, and you have to travel, you will honor that.
- 10:28You will figure out what needs to happen at home so that you can take the travel.
- 10:34Yeah.
- 10:35But when it's for you- It somehow, it's just not related.
- 10:41Yeah, that's for work, this is for me.
- 10:44Yeah.
- 10:44And particularly if that involves spending my own resources.
- 10:48Women earn money.
- 10:49Right.
- 10:49They work so hard for it.
- 10:51Mm-hmm.
- 10:51They put it away.
- 10:53Everyone else, but for themselves, they feel guilty.
- 10:57In fact, that's the word.
- 10:58Yeah.
- 10:58That guilt, the self-guilt- Yeah that I can do something for me- Yeah without having to explain myself.
- 11:08Yep.
- 11:09And it's okay.
- 11:10Yeah.
- 11:11Yeah.
- 11:12Very powerful.
- 11:14So, do you have any examples or any words that y- come to mind of people who have had that teetering, and,"I'm just gonna do it, and it's tough, but I made the decision and I'm, I've decided and everybody knows I'm going off and it's my time." And when they come back, what has happened as a result of them taking time for them, by them be- because of themselves?
- 11:41Is there a, do you have anything that shows the result of doing that?
- 11:48It's interesting.
- 11:49I think it's just, uh, building their own confidence.
- 11:51So this, this one lady, when you ask that question, one of the ones that comes to mind that doesn't exactly fit, but the interesting thing about her is that she had been traveling for 10 years.
- 12:03She's holding a full-time job.
- 12:04She's, has family out, so she's based in Kenya, but she has family in Europe and the US.
- 12:11Okay.
- 12:12And she'd been traveling for 10 years, and had never made any arrangements herself, ever.
- 12:19And so she would just, they would book the things for her, and she would ask for permission and ask her like,"So how do you arrange it?" She's like,"The travel agent." Yeah.
- 12:28"She does this for me.
- 12:29She even checks in for me online and reminds me to go to the airport." And I was like,"Okay, let's just, at least you've come." Yeah.
- 12:38"Let's do this together." Yeah.
- 12:40"I'm not going to do any booking for you.
- 12:41I will just guide you." Yeah.
- 12:43"Everything you do is gonna be on your own." Yeah.
- 12:45So the first thing we did, which was basic, was, okay, you've arranged with the travel agent, let's find that flight online.
- 12:53Yep.
- 12:53And then ask her to reserve the same- Yeah and just look at the price.
- 12:58And so the first thing when we landed, it was like, I don't know, something like 100 and hun-$150 difference, and I said,"That's what you pay for so that someone checks in for you online- Right and sends you a reminder." Mm.
- 13:12Which you can do yourself.
- 13:13Then the next thing, she was like,"Now, I don't know about traveling and the layovers and blah, blah, blah." All the things that once you've been doing it a lot for yourself, it seems easy, but for someone who's never done it- Yes it is quite fascinating to hear all the little steps of fear.
- 13:31She's- Mm traveled before, but she's now concerned booking for herself, using her credit card, which she uses for so many other things.
- 13:38Right.
- 13:38Layovers, and then how am I going to, how am I going to book activities?
- 13:43Yeah, visit my, my family, but I'm usually at home and do everything with them.
- 13:47So I showed her how to book an activity.
- 13:49Mm-hmm.
- 13:49And so this was the first time she's doing it, and she would tell me every step of the way, even using an eSIM.
- 13:56Yeah.
- 13:56And yeah.
- 13:58Yeah.
- 13:58And so she traveled, and then she came back, and I was trying to reach out to, to find out how did it go.
- 14:05I'm looking for feedback.
- 14:07I was surprised because she's, even before the day I landed- Yeah I have already booked my next flight in the next week, four weeks.
- 14:19I have booked my activities.
- 14:20I've already told my supervisor I'm taking the time off, and I'm heading out.
- 14:25I was so impressed.
- 14:27Wow.
- 14:27Yeah.
- 14:28She's like,"This is so easy." And it's, it was such a small thing.
- 14:32It was- Yeah just a flight, and I couldn't believe that.
- 14:36Wow.
- 14:37Yeah.
- 14:38Yeah.
- 14:38That was i- impressive.
- 14:40Just, just- Yeah handholding and allowing her to give herself that permission.
- 14:45She has since done, I don't know, three, four trips and just- Yeah book it.
- 14:48She's like,"Oh, for the first time now I'm leaving my family behind.
- 14:52I'm going off- Right into the, which- whichever direction." And it's amazing.
- 14:56She's deep.
- 14:57Yeah.
- 14:58That's the first time she's ever done that in her life.
- 15:00I'm so proud of her.
- 15:01Yeah.
- 15:01The other one recently was interesting that a lady is traveling with her son.
- 15:05Mm.
- 15:06And she's, of course, it's her son.
- 15:08It's Gen Z.
- 15:09Yep.
- 15:09Planning activities that are common to both is a tight balance.
- 15:15Sure.
- 15:15And so she was sharing me,"Oh, they want to go and do this go-karting thing." And I asked her,"You know you don't have to go with him?
- 15:23He's an adult." Yeah.
- 15:24"You can stay." And what she was telling me is,"I'm just going to feel so tired.
- 15:27I just want to sleep." And I told her,"You know you actually can?" Yeah.
- 15:33And she's such, she says- Thank you for that.
- 15:35We can actually stay back and let him go.
- 15:39Oh.
- 15:40Small things.
- 15:42Small, just so empowering.
- 15:44Like- Yeah you know you have a choice.
- 15:46Yeah.
- 15:47You are a different person.
- 15:48They're a different character.
- 15:50Yeah.
- 15:50And a th- third example, very quickly, is a lady who just, of course, we tend to go with your children, and you want them to also be exposed, not realizing they're different characters- Yeah they have different interests.
- 16:01And so shock on her when her kids said,"We don't want to travel with you anymore." Yeah.
- 16:07What did I do wrong?
- 16:09Nothing.
- 16:09They're growing, and this is what we want.
- 16:12Yeah.
- 16:13I love that.
- 16:14Yeah.
- 16:15So just, it's in the small things.
- 16:17Just you are a distinct person.
- 16:20You have- Yeah your interests, and it's okay.
- 16:22In fact, if you- Yeah travel with others, this is the thing I keep reminding them.
- 16:26When you travel with others, the important thing is understand yourself as a traveler, understand your different interests.
- 16:33Mm-hmm.
- 16:33And just when you sit at a table with a group of friends and everybody orders things so differently,"I don't do chicken.
- 16:40I'm only vegetarian.
- 16:42I am, I have to do the meat, a big chunk." Yeah.
- 16:45And we give each other the freedom to be that and still interact with each other with joy.
- 16:51Same with travel.
- 16:52Yeah.
- 16:52If you want to travel with others- Yeah then first step is understand what your interests, your needs.
- 16:59Yes, you want company, but not everyone travels like you.
- 17:02No one, not everyone- Yeah has the same interests.
- 17:04Uh, give each other that space or travel alone.
- 17:10That's a that's another one that's, yeah, a difficult one, but yeah.
- 17:16Yeah, I- Yeah yeah, that's what comes to mind.
- 17:19Beautiful.
- 17:20I love your example.
- 17:22Sitting down for a meal when you're all out, you don't all order the same thing, and nobody bats an eye.
- 17:28Make sure that you order what you want to have on your- Exactly travel menu, right?
- 17:36Love it.
- 17:36Exactly.
- 17:37Exactly.
- 17:37Love it.
- 17:38And understand each other as friends.
- 17:41Yeah.
- 17:41One of the things I coach is when you understand yourself as a traveler and your style- Yep it helps you also choose your travel buddies with caution- Yeah selectivity.
- 17:55Just so that you increase the likelihood you will both enjoy the experience- Mm-hmm or just travel separately.
- 18:03Yep.
- 18:03And it can be as simple as- I prefer the higher standard, the five-star experience, and I prefer the three-star experience.
- 18:14We both have different budgets.
- 18:16Yeah.
- 18:16Even our lifestyle is different.
- 18:18Sure.
- 18:18Trying to travel together when you have that kind of difference can raise conflict.
- 18:25Yeah.
- 18:25And because we tend to, the travel that we enjoy the most is when we travel out to another country or out of our comfort zone, you want to minimize the conflicts when you're away- Yeah and you're together.
- 18:38Yeah.
- 18:38So better you iron out these things before you go so that let's agree to- Yeah either travel separately for the peace of, you know- Yeah each other.
- 18:52Yeah.
- 18:53Yeah.
- 18:53And it's okay.
- 18:54Yeah.
- 18:55Yeah.
- 18:55It's absolutely okay.
- 18:57And what I'm hearing too is that communication is key.
- 19:01Indeed.
- 19:01Knowing what it is that you're looking for in your trip is important, so really understand why am I going- Yes and what is it that I want to experience, and then what do I need to put on the table in terms of here's what I'm thinking about.
- 19:19Oh, you're- Mm-hmm not thinking the same?
- 19:20Oh, and then- Mm-hmm put it all out.
- 19:22Mm-hmm.
- 19:22Good communication, right?
- 19:24Absolutely.
- 19:25Yeah.
- 19:25Very good.
- 19:26I, I, in this case, I is important.
- 19:29Yeah, love that.
- 19:30So that we can understand.
- 19:30Yeah.
- 19:31We try to minimize it, but in this circumstance where we're going to spend resources, we are going to spend time- Yes let's be clear.
- 19:38Let's just be open.
- 19:39Let's just- Yeah have an understanding of each other because we assume.
- 19:43Yeah.
- 19:43Let's go to Paris, and we all want to- I don't know, stay out clubbing while somebody else- Yeah wants to go to the museum, and instead of going all the way there, let's, let's talk about it here and see- Love that something we can work out.
- 19:59Love that.
- 20:00And for families too, not just friends.
- 20:02Yep.
- 20:03Makes sense.
- 20:03Mom, Dad, kids particularly- Yeah even if they're, unless they're underage- Of course long as they can speak their mind.
- 20:10Yeah.
- 20:11Let's have a discussion before we go.
- 20:13Mm-hmm.
- 20:13Let's put everything on the table.
- 20:15Yeah.
- 20:16Let's negotiate.
- 20:17I had a very nice encounter.
- 20:20As the coaching, as you indicated, is relatively new, so it's evolving.
- 20:23Yeah.
- 20:24So I did have a good experience with a family.
- 20:26It was the first experience.
- 20:28I usually coach women or w- I've even coached women and a woman and her partner.
- 20:33Yeah.
- 20:34But the family one was interest because the first day, Mommy and Daddy were doing all the talking, and I noticed the teenage boys were kinda, like, on the side, and so I just made a soft request.
- 20:44Yeah.
- 20:44Could you guys let the boys, you know- Yep come upfront, and then they'll also participate.
- 20:51Yeah.
- 20:51They're teenagers.
- 20:52They also have their interests.
- 20:53It worked out better than- Ah all of us expected because they took charge.
- 21:00Mommy and Daddy let them do all the searching, the research, organizing- Love it the activities, and then with the understanding that, yeah, we want you guys to have a good time, but there is one or two things, we will do everything with you, but there's also something that's important to us.
- 21:17Yeah.
- 21:17One outstanding was that,"Mommy, we must go to church on a Sunday.
- 21:22I know it's holiday time.
- 21:23We must." Everybody knows Mommy, that's important.
- 21:25So perhaps if they weren't traveling with Mommy, that might not be on the agenda, but- Yeah they live with, so the two boys, Dad, that's got to be in the schedule, and we are going to organize our itinerary for that day around that.
- 21:39So in the end, everybody gets their space, their joy- Yeah and supports everyone else.
- 21:47Love that.
- 21:47And that works out just by talking about it and- You may have been unaware, but as people express themselves- Mm-hmm then you negotiate.
- 21:56And you even find that there are many activities listed, you'd expect something the boys would want to do, and they're like,"That, for that cost?
- 22:03No, we can do our-" Yeah way with it.
- 22:06And so you find that participation really brings everyone together and makes it fun because everyone has been heard.
- 22:13Yeah.
- 22:14Everyone has been negotiated.
- 22:15Yeah.
- 22:16Negotiation is together.
- 22:18Yeah.
- 22:18So that's a holiday they'll be talking about for years.
- 22:21Totally.
- 22:22Re- remember when, right?
- 22:23Exactly.
- 22:24Yeah.
- 22:25And, and honestly, isn't that what people want when they travel, is making those memories?
- 22:30Absolutely.
- 22:30Yeah.
- 22:31Yes.
- 22:31Yeah.
- 22:32Yes.
- 22:32Yeah.
- 22:33Yes.
- 22:34So let's go back to something you said a while ago about, that's group stuff.
- 22:40Mm-hmm.
- 22:40Let's go back to solo travel,'cause that opens up a whole new level of opportunity.
- 22:49I'm gonna call it that.
- 22:51So tell us some key pieces so that our audience can kinda start to sift and sort,"You know what?
- 22:58I've been thinking about traveling solo." Mm-hmm.
- 23:00"I'm scared,'cause I'm always got somebody with me, and I can talk to someone- Mm-hmm and I can find my way." Yes.
- 23:06Yeah.
- 23:07What are two or three things that you see and have experienced that are imperative for a solo traveler?
- 23:17The, let me say the most common- Yeah it's more or less the more obvious, but it doesn't seem so obvious- Yeah is traveling alone, first and foremost, enables you, gives you a lot more room and choice, because you do what you want when you don't, when you want- Yeah and when you don't want.
- 23:37Yeah.
- 23:37You not, you don't have to refer to anyone.
- 23:40Mm-hmm.
- 23:41The whole itinerary is up to you.
- 23:42You could even book things and cancel them at will.
- 23:46You go according to your feel, and the activities are really around your preference.
- 23:53Yeah.
- 23:53In a good way, according to your budget.
- 23:55Uh, and which is really a gift.
- 23:59Yeah.
- 24:01We are social- Yeah and we are always having to adjust to everyone else's needs.
- 24:05Okay, putting everyone- Yeah first or trying to adjust or balance.
- 24:09Balance.
- 24:09But it really makes a difference, and I've had the experience because I didn't start solo.
- 24:13I started traveling with my sister, and fortunately for both of us, we enjoyed it a lot because we found that we, uh, a lot of things are common.
- 24:23Our interests are generally common, and she would generally also go with the flow because I'm the older sister, so.
- 24:29You've trained her well.
- 24:31I love it.
- 24:32Yeah.
- 24:33Which is a bit unfair, but yeah, it is what it is.
- 24:36It was- Yep and she's easy anyway.
- 24:38Yeah.
- 24:38Yeah.
- 24:38But one thing I noticed, which I'm going to point out- Yeah the issue with that later was that I, she was ahead of technology in terms of- Okay use of money and cards and such.
- 24:48Sure.
- 24:49And I would leave that to her.
- 24:50I wouldn't even bother trying to think,"How does it work?" I wouldn't even have a backup.
- 24:53Yep.
- 24:53And she was always with me, so any emergency or anything, she was there.
- 24:59Yeah.
- 24:59So when I started traveling, and solo because life happens.
- 25:03Yeah.
- 25:03Yep.
- 25:04So she got busy.
- 25:05Yeah, I was not always, more recently, we're not able- Yeah to travel together.
- 25:09Okay.
- 25:09One thing I noticed is how much I hadn't been paying attention to things- Mm like at work, because there's always someone with me.
- 25:16Yeah.
- 25:16So your self-awareness, first of all, is heightened.
- 25:21Sure.
- 25:22And you pay more attention because you're on your own.
- 25:26Yeah.
- 25:26But the most important thing is that you also interact a lot more with people ar- around you because you don't have someone with you.
- 25:35It can turn to be, yeah, of course, at first, just like first day at work, first day at school, you don't know anybody.
- 25:42Yep.
- 25:43So you have to figure your way around- Mm with the language problem or whatever.
- 25:47Sure.
- 25:48But everybody is, uh, it's not there to serve you, but people are helpful, a lot more helpful than the scary movies or the news.
- 25:57Right.
- 25:58Like, yes, the world- Yeah is so much more friendlier.
- 26:02And really- You are there particularly as a tourist for leisure.
- 26:07Sure.
- 26:07Uh, even for relocation, you just need to ask for help.
- 26:10Yeah.
- 26:11You interact with, there are people everywhere.
- 26:13You're going to have to interact with people one way or the other.
- 26:16That's right.
- 26:16Uh- Sure the accommodation, you join a tour.
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:20The people on, in the market, in the streets.
- 26:23Yeah.
- 26:23There are people everywhere, and so- Yeah you will pay more attention, you will socialize with others a little, and you become self-aware.
- 26:32The best thing about solo travel is that you start to discover yourself in a way it, it's not, you wouldn't even have anticipated.
- 26:43Because you're completely out of your comfort zone, in a different arena, and you're starting to learn who you really are- Yeah without the people who know you- Yeah and the environment that you're used to- Yeah being around you or near you.
- 27:00You really come face to face with yourself.
- 27:02Who am I?
- 27:03What do I enjoy?
- 27:04Yeah.
- 27:04We don't, it, you can't even take a self-retreat at home and get to that.
- 27:08Yeah.
- 27:08No.
- 27:09Being- Yeah out of the country, being, not necessarily out of the country, but completely in a place where nobody knows you.
- 27:15Sure.
- 27:16Um, and no- nobody knows you, and it's a new place to you.
- 27:20You will come face to face with yourself.
- 27:23And it's- Love that more empowering than it is disempowering.
- 27:27It's really- Mm-hmm a moment of, it's surreal.
- 27:29Yeah.
- 27:29It's like,"Oh, wow." Wow.
- 27:32Yeah.
- 27:33And I can s- I can survive.
- 27:35I can survive sounds a bit dramatic, but I can take care of myself.
- 27:40I have- Yeah done so much.
- 27:42I have been through so much.
- 27:43I am- Yeah here.
- 27:45I'm, even the gift of being able to arrange a solo trip and be there, it's- Yeah it's such a joy.
- 27:52It's really builds your confidence.
- 27:54It increases gratitude, at least in my experience.
- 27:57Yeah.
- 27:58Yeah.
- 27:58It helps you step away from the things that may bother you from day to day, and see them from- Yep a different perspective.
- 28:06Yep.
- 28:06And maybe have new ideas, new response, or different response- Mm-hmm which hopefully is positive.
- 28:15And then- Solo travel also, I don't know, I must have gone to part three, four, five.
- 28:22Anyway.
- 28:22It's okay.
- 28:22It's all good.
- 28:23Solo travel also gives you the courage to do things in other ways, not just travel.
- 28:29Mm-hmm.
- 28:29So you start to build confidence in yourself as someone who can do things different, something you can take a, a daring step.
- 28:37Travel, traveling alone seems to be in that- Yeah kind of high ranking of daring.
- 28:43Yeah.
- 28:43How can you go to a place you don't know?
- 28:46And yet we grew up doing things we don't know, going to places we don't know.
- 28:51It's just part of life.
- 28:53I mean- Yeah we left home, go to a university.
- 28:56Right.
- 28:57You don't know anyone there.
- 28:58Even if you know a friend or two- Yeah it's a whole new experience.
- 29:01New job, you marry someone, oh, you've only known time and you start a new life.
- 29:06I mean- Yeah women raise families, run communities, and then when you tell them,"Take a flight west," they freak.
- 29:15Yeah.
- 29:17I love what you're saying because you can tap back into the skills you've built over time, and there is a connection.
- 29:24Absolutely.
- 29:24Absolutely.
- 29:24Absolutely.
- 29:25Absolutely.
- 29:26Yeah.
- 29:26Yeah.
- 29:27Love that.
- 29:27Yeah.
- 29:28Yeah.
- 29:28You have a lot of skills- Mm-hmm a lot of maturity, emotional intelligence- Yeah than you give yourself credit for.
- 29:38Yeah, so I think you thrive.
- 29:41Yeah.
- 29:41The first step is always going to be disproportionately difficult- Of course because everything is new.
- 29:48But once you take that step- Yeah you don't even have to go far.
- 29:55Start nearby.
- 29:55Yeah.
- 29:55Go to a different city, a different- Yeah region.
- 29:57And then- Sure as you build your confidence, you can go further.
- 30:01Um, yeah, be more adventurous, and with time then you'll see- Yeah that whether it works for you, and it's okay if you go solo- Yeah flying, okay, this I don't enjoy it.
- 30:11I don't want to do it again.
- 30:12That's fine.
- 30:13But go- Nice and then decide for yourself.
- 30:16You could be surprised, be able to make it.
- 30:20Yeah.
- 30:20And again, it also helps those who- I feel, like you said, we always have people around us.
- 30:26So I- Yeah can't really, I've never been this long time without- Mm-hmm friends, husband, without love.
- 30:32It also helps you learn that you don't need to wait on someone else, because you may not realize that travel as a priority may not be as high for them as it is for you.
- 30:47Love that.
- 30:47We can talk about it, it's interesting, it's exciting, let's do it, but your, where you're coming- Yeah may not be in the same level.
- 30:57Yeah.
- 30:57So you could be going on with realizing your more prioritized dreams- Yeah while I'm waiting on you.
- 31:05And so solo is another, and this is another reason to consider solo travel.
- 31:11Yeah.
- 31:12That it's a personal passion- Yes or interest, and not everybody at the same time, even your best friend or your spouse or your partner.
- 31:21Yeah.
- 31:21And the best thing ever is that more and more women are taking it up.
- 31:25Mm.
- 31:25So you'll be surprised how many women you meet- Mm-hmm as solo travelers out there doing exactly the same, taking their first step, their next step.
- 31:34And yeah, it's a whole community now nowadays.
- 31:38It's really surprising how much it has- Love that yeah, really increased.
- 31:42So there are many women out there.
- 31:43Yeah.
- 31:44Yeah.
- 31:45Yeah.
- 31:46Love that.
- 31:46Keeping company.
- 31:47Yeah.
- 31:47And that's amazing.
- 31:49And it all, what I'm hearing consistently in your conver- in this conversation is that doing this for you, by you, because of you is the reason why it's going to work.
- 32:03Whether it's a reflection and that didn't pan out- Yes the way my vision thought, cool.
- 32:10Yes.
- 32:10What did you learn about yourself through all of it?
- 32:13Wonderful.
- 32:14Right?
- 32:14At the end.
- 32:14Absolutely.
- 32:14You might learn travel far away is not your gig.
- 32:19Yes.
- 32:20Cool.
- 32:20You might learn that you do want to be connected.
- 32:24Maybe you are very curious about languages and different places- Uh-huh of that.
- 32:30Yeah.
- 32:30Like, take some time and play with it before you make- Yes decisions.
- 32:34And like you shared, Maria, start small.
- 32:37You don't have to go on a plane.
- 32:39You can get in- Yes your car and go to the next region, or go to the next province in Canada, right?
- 32:45Yeah.
- 32:45Yeah.
- 32:46Of course.
- 32:46Why not, right?
- 32:48Yeah.
- 32:49Yeah.
- 32:49If it's on your mind, there's a reason.
- 32:51Just- Yeah take the step.
- 32:52Exactly.
- 32:53Love that.
- 32:54It's for you.
- 32:54If it's on your mind, there's a reason.
- 32:57Love that.
- 32:59Wanna talk about one more thing, and that's international travel.
- 33:03I just tapped into it a little bit there, but- What would you say is the biggest misconception that people have about international travel?
- 33:14That's the world is scary.
- 33:16They're waiting for you on the corner to kidnap you- Ah and I dunno, all those- Yep dramatic movie-style stories.
- 33:23Yeah.
- 33:23Yeah.
- 33:24Um, that it's for other people, that it's too expensive, it's, it's that it's not safe.
- 33:35One interesting thing, let me just interject here.
- 33:37Sure.
- 33:37One thing I discovered, because there's a lot of interesting things you get when you travel alone, just random thoughts.
- 33:44Yeah.
- 33:44And I realized that everybody around me is working.
- 33:49Everybody is working around me.
- 33:51I'm the one who's taking time off, which is a huge gift.
- 33:54Right.
- 33:55Yeah.
- 33:55And the reason I'm using that example, from the air hostess who checks you in, the taxi driver- Mm-hmm the hotel, all those people want you to have a good time, want you to be safe.
- 34:07Yeah.
- 34:07Not personally, but the system is working for you.
- 34:11For you.
- 34:12It's working for you to increase the likelihood that you will actually enjoy the experience, and come back, or be fulfilled, or refer others, or have good stories to tell at the very least of the experiences you had out there.
- 34:29Mm-hmm.
- 34:29So it really is working, the system is working for you, and it is for you.
- 34:35Right.
- 34:35It's not for those others.
- 34:37Yeah.
- 34:37You dunno what, you, the outside doesn't define what a tourist looks like.
- 34:41It's the inside.
- 34:42It's your desire to- Mm your curiosity- Yeah your interest in visiting a certain place, or carrying out or experiencing a certain activity.
- 34:54Mm-hmm.
- 34:54Even going to the museum.
- 34:56These are innate.
- 34:58It's you- Mm-hmm and there are many others like you.
- 35:01It's a natural desire.
- 35:05And so when you respond to it, you find that really the world of tourism, there's a reason it's thriving.
- 35:12It is for you.
- 35:14Enjoy yourself.
- 35:15Okay.
- 35:15It really is for you.
- 35:17Mm-hmm.
- 35:17And so understandably, if you've not done it before, you have your anxieties.
- 35:22Sure.
- 35:23Where do you start?
- 35:24But there are people to help you.
- 35:25There are a lot of people.
- 35:27People are friendly and really supportive, so long as you are Yeah, you're The, the issue is, the concern is always are you who you say you are?
- 35:35Are you here to do what you said you wanted to do?
- 35:37Don't be disruptive.
- 35:39Be respectful- Of course of local customs.
- 35:40Yes.
- 35:41People are busy working.
- 35:42People are busy going on with their livelihoods, including those who are serving you.
- 35:46You are the one in the position of real privilege in the sense that- Yes you can afford it, you have time to go, and you're gifting yourself.
- 35:59You have an interest.
- 36:00You're curious.
- 36:01You're even supporting them.
- 36:03Yes.
- 36:03They're supporting you and you're supporting them.
- 36:04You're creating livelihoods.
- 36:06Yeah.
- 36:06So it is, the misconception is the, i- it's unsafe, and we are not trying to go to Iraq for tourism, for example.
- 36:14Sure.
- 36:14Or Iran at this time, right?
- 36:15You're going- Yeah to places that are at peace.
- 36:19They're, they, there's, they're going about their lives.
- 36:22Yeah.
- 36:22So it's, there's even these days there is a tourism police.
- 36:27I realize there is a, a, a department in many countries now that, where they assign security.
- 36:34Yeah.
- 36:34Just so that not, uh, the dramatic against thugs and stuff- Mm just normal, common concerns you may have.
- 36:43Yeah.
- 36:43There are people also to serve you.
- 36:45So it's safer than you imagine.
- 36:47It's less expensive than you imagine.
- 36:49Listen- It doesn't have to be expensive, but it's going to cost.
- 36:54Yeah.
- 36:54You can afford it because everybody who earns spends their excess or their extra on something.
- 37:05Yeah.
- 37:06Yeah.
- 37:06When you prioritize travel, you will see that you can afford it.
- 37:11Nice.
- 37:12Yeah.
- 37:12You decide what's important for you.
- 37:14Mm-hmm.
- 37:14It's another upgrade.
- 37:15In fact, for women, just look in your wardrobe- Yeah and you will know where all the- Yes excess is going.
- 37:21So you can afford it.
- 37:24It is safer than you imagine, and it's not for other people, it is for you.
- 37:30Yeah.
- 37:30You deserve it.
- 37:32Give yourself permission.
- 37:34Love that.
- 37:35And it is possible.
- 37:37International travel is possible regardless of your passport.
- 37:41I have a Kenyan passport.
- 37:42Yeah.
- 37:42It's not a diplomatic passport, and on that passport I have traveled to 100 countries.
- 37:48Yeah.
- 37:48It is possible.
- 37:50Mm.
- 37:50Every country you dream of is within reach.
- 37:53Mm.
- 37:54So if you've never done it before, or- Yeah visit someone.
- 37:58Now we have friends all over the place.
- 38:00Yes.
- 38:00Your friends, their family, people who wanna say,"Come.
- 38:03Come." Start that.
- 38:05That's a soft entry.
- 38:06Sure.
- 38:06A friendly face.
- 38:07They don't even have to host you.
- 38:09You just- Yeah.
- 38:10Yeah meet at a certain location, and you know someone.
- 38:15If that's the fear of,"Oh, I don't know anyone, and who will I ask, and what will..." Okay.
- 38:20Start- Yeah with someone you know.
- 38:21Right.
- 38:21Go in that direction.
- 38:21Right.
- 38:21They don't have to host you, but they can meet you- Sure or they can guide you what to do, what not to do.
- 38:29And once you take that first step- Yeah and go, you will build so much confidence in yourself- Yeah that you can keep going.
- 38:39You will also discover whether you enjoy it or not.
- 38:42I need to remind you- Yes of that.
- 38:44Yeah.
- 38:45Of course.
- 38:45You need, yes.
- 38:46You will learn about yourself a lot more than you'll even learn about wherever you are going.
- 38:52Yeah.
- 38:52And that's enough to give you the confidence to go forth- Yeah and travel more.
- 38:59Love that.
- 39:01Such wisdom, my dear.
- 39:03Such depth of wisdom.
- 39:05People think,"Oh, I'm just gonna travel," and they say it, but so many pieces.
- 39:10And to have this conversation in Thrive After 45 brings my heart so much joy, because I've learned so many new ways of reframing my thinking around travel, as it were.
- 39:26You've given so many pieces of gold nuggets.
- 39:30In the show notes, we will show and share how to connect- Mm-hmm with Maria so that you can- access her wisdom, her guidance, her expertise along the way.
- 39:43I know she'd be a wonderful coach.
- 39:46I haven't coached with her, but who knows what the future will bring for Denise.
- 39:51We don't know.
- 39:53But honestly, nuggets and seeds that you've planted have been incredible today, and I thank you so much- Thank you for sharing your wisdom and expertise, and making a difference in the world, showing women, because our show is speaking to women, but I know you work- Mm-hmm with families and individuals.
- 40:13So please make sure you reach out to Maria.
- 40:16Go and check out all of her amazing stuff,'cause she is a wealth of knowledge and experience.
- 40:22So thank you- Thank you again for being here with us, Maria.
- 40:26Thank you.
- 40:27Thank you, Denise, for having me- and speaking to everyone.
- 40:29It was so nice chatting.
- 40:31And yes, as she has said, feel free, reach out, and check in.
- 40:37Yeah.
- 40:37Yeah.
- 40:37Let's chat.
- 40:38The best thing is- Yeah chatting with someone- Right appreciates the travel, so- Yeah even if it's just for a chat, let's do it.
- 40:46I love it.
- 40:47I love it.
- 40:48And if this episode has resonated at all with you, please share, comment, give us a review so that we can make it into other midlife women's lives, and show that we are never alone- Agreed at home and abroad.
- 41:08Before we wrap up today, I have to share with you, Ignite the Inner Uprising is being built around four thresholds in every women, where we cross o- back and forth, coming back into ourselves, our body, our voice, our wiring, and our stories.
- 41:31It's not a retreat where we're gonna disappear and just shut the world off, and it's not a conference where talking heads come at you and you get more information and overwhelmed.
- 41:44It is not either of those.
- 41:46It is a room of women coming together, being guided by our torchbearers, and facilitated into stepping back into and remembering who you are as a woman, before all the identities became a reality for you.
- 42:05It's the ability to gift yourself, coming home, and keeping that fire alive inside of you.
- 42:14It's not about reinvention, it's about a return, because when one woman turns a light on, the rest of the room catches fire.
- 42:26Thank you for helping us, Maria, thrive after 45.
- 42:31Have a wonderful day, everyone.
- 42:34Bye-bye.
