- Adam Rutz: There's two different ways to gain experience in life. There's expensive experience and inexpensive experience. Expensive experience is when you have to make the mistake yourself. You lose, you fail, you handle something the wrong way, and then you learn from it. Sometimes that's necessary. There's certain lessons in life that you're only going to fully understand by going through them yourself. But inexpensive experience is different. That's when you learn from somebody who's already paid the price for the lesson. Think about great football coaches, whether it's college or the NFL. I can't think of many successful coaches who just showed up one day and figured everything out on their own. Most of them learned under somebody else, somebody else's coaching tree. They watched how another great coach built the program, how those coaches handled players, how they prepared, how they responded to adversity. How they led when things weren't going their way. They took years of somebody else's experience and used it to accelerate their own development. I was fortunate to have that in business with a guy by the name of Jimmy Carr. Jimmy taught me what it meant to be a professional, not just when business is going well. He taught me how to carry myself like a pro, even when things weren't going my way, how to communicate, how to handle difficult situations. How to walk into a business setting and represent yourself the right way. And I still made mistakes. I still had to go fail on my own. And I still had to gain some expensive experience of my own. But I'll never be able to thank Jimmy enough for how much inexpensive experience he actually gave me. And that's the lesson. Whatever it is that you do, find people who have already been where you're trying to go. If you're an athlete, find somebody who played at the level you're trying to reach. If you're a coach, learn from coaches who've already built what you're trying to build. If you're a business owner, spend time around people who have already solved the problems you're facing right now. Ask questions. Listen. Study how they think. Study how they prepare. Study how they respond when things get difficult. You're still going to have to walk your own path. You're still going to have to make your own mistakes, but you don't have to pay full price for every single lesson. So here's your process for today. Find somebody who's already been where you want to go and learn from them. Get as much inexpensive experience as you possibly can, because experience creates wisdom. And one of the fastest ways to gain wisdom is to learn from somebody who already paid the price to earn it. Mindset, process, discipline, execution. That's mental performance daily.
