Latest / Breaking Mayberry / PARENTAL CONTROL: Strong Opinions About Murphy Beds (w/ Kae Lani Palmisano)
Transcript
- 0:22Hello, and welcome to another episode of Breaking Mayberry, a show that's all
- 0:26about creating and realizing an artistic vision, about getting an idea and an inspiration
- 0:31and going with it despite what anybody says, pursuing your vision, regardless of
- 0:36the collateral damage it causes. That's the most important thing is when is that
- 0:44your vision gets realized, especially when you are creating things for other people.
- 0:49I'm one of your hosts. I'm Marty Schneider. The other host Dan Ludwig,
- 0:52and today we're gonna explain that in a second joining us today for another
- 0:57episode of Parental Control, our newest mini series. One of the two mini
- 1:00series is that we're doing at the same time. We'll get back to Maybury
- 1:03someday. We don't care is friend of the show, food writer, Emmy
- 1:11winning host of Why Wise Check Please, and a bunch of other things that
- 1:17she'll tell you about. Miss Kai Lannie Palmisano. Hey, thanks for having
- 1:22me back. Welcome back. We're happy to have you here. You're a
- 1:26big get for us. Thank you. I'm so flattered. This is a
- 1:30big get for me. Kaylanie, Will you go ahead and tell our listeners
- 1:38what you're up to and where people can find you. I'm gonna do it
- 1:41upfront because oh sure, that's how much I care about this. I want
- 1:45people to know about your things. Yes, well, I am the host
- 1:48of check Please Philly on Why Y, which airs on Thursdays at seven thirty
- 1:52and then you can catch it again during the Cooking Block on Saturdays at four
- 1:55pm. In addition to that, I am a food and try ravel writers.
- 2:00You can find me across the interwebs in all different kinds of newspapers.
- 2:05This summer I did like a big barbecue project in Kansas City. It was
- 2:07a good time. And yeah, I guess the best way to keep up
- 2:14with the my Shenanigans is just finding me on Instagram and TikTok and something maybe
- 2:19Twitter if that's still around by the time this airs at Kailani says, And
- 2:23yeah, I also have a new project coming out on Substack called side Quests,
- 2:30which is more nerdy deep dives. And I think that this is going
- 2:35to kind of give you a little bit of taste as to the types of
- 2:38topics I like to explore. Oh hey, yeah, we're a preview,
- 2:43Yes, an appetizer as it were. Got that corporate synergy thing going on
- 2:50promotion, cross platform promotion. Figuring out what that is. It's be a
- 2:57part of what we're about to talk about, Kailanie. We are in the
- 3:00middle of parental control. And for those listeners who haven't maybe listened before,
- 3:05the idea behind parental control is that we have guests on to talk about television
- 3:10and their parents. Essentially, our guests choose a television show that was either
- 3:16a their parents' favorite when their parents were young, b your parents' favorite when
- 3:22you were young, or see your parents' favorite TV show. Now and Kailanie,
- 3:27you chose B and you chose a show that has some memories with you
- 3:32and your mother, right, yes, tell us about your mom and tell
- 3:38us about your relationship to this television show. So you're gonna love her name.
- 3:43Her name is Bunny Lions, no doubt, are you shitting me?
- 3:47You actually sitting her real name. Her actual name is Bunny Lions. She
- 3:53is a baker, you know, well, okay, she's a nurse and
- 3:59a bay So like she's had all these iterations of her life where she took
- 4:03herself through school, got her nursing degree. Then after years of nursing at
- 4:09the ripe age of fifty was like, I don't to open a bakery.
- 4:11So now she has Bunnycakes Bakery in Berlin, New Jersey. Yeah, if
- 4:16you I picked Trading Spaces because in the early two thousands, my parents were
- 4:26very young homeowners. They had their first home and they wanted to decorate their
- 4:32home, and we watched Trading Spaces every single weekend. I just I remember.
- 4:39It was a ritual. It was like we'd go to Home Depot and
- 4:42Lowe's on a Saturday, and then maybe we'd go out have dinner or lunch
- 4:48or linner, late dinner or late lunch at a diner somewhere, and then
- 4:55we'd come home just in time for Trading Spaces. Oh my god. Okay,
- 5:01so first off, first I get first off, first, okay,
- 5:04if you if you said there's a person named Bunny Lions, what is their
- 5:10biography, I just go like, well, yeah, a nurse slash baker
- 5:14that now owns a bakery. So that's just like with the name, the
- 5:16name perfectly encapsulates her life. It's like, what, I don't understand how
- 5:21Bunny Lions Bakery nurse is not already a show on til Yes, she was
- 5:28on Food Network. Of course she was now hang out a second. Was
- 5:32she on Food Network before or after you got into the food writing industry?
- 5:38Did she? Did you? Well? She was being courted for like one
- 5:44of those competition shows and like around the time that I started Check Please and
- 5:50Pandemic kind of like postpones some things. But eventually she did go and she
- 5:55did the Christmas Cookie Challenge on Food Network. I need to go back in
- 6:01China and I need to make a pitch to ABC for a show that can
- 6:05follow Charmed because Bunny Lions Bakery Nurse is such a slam dunk. Need to
- 6:15point out Dan Charmed was on the WB slash the CW. That is a
- 6:18very important distinction to make because no, I'm making this distinction because Bunny Lion's
- 6:24Bakery Nurse is basic cable at at at least that, Yeah, we might
- 6:29be able to pitch that to HBO. That might be a premium series,
- 6:31and we might be able to really pitch it to HBO. Now, got
- 6:34I keep I keep teasing this Trading Spaces If you've never seen the show,
- 6:40if you don't know what we're talking about, Actually, Kilani, do you
- 6:43want to go ahead and describe what Trading Spaces is? Yeah? It's it's
- 6:46this show where two couples that are friends they switch houses and they have forty
- 6:53eight hours to decorate a room in each other's houses, and so they get
- 6:58a they get paired up with a designer, and they also only have a
- 7:02budget of one thousand dollars. So it's really a show about ingenuity, of
- 7:09being clever, of stretching your dollar, which was a big deal in the
- 7:13early two thousands. I mean it's a big deal now, but really back
- 7:15then it was like, look, you can design an entire room for under
- 7:20a thousand dollars. Make a great case for that. It doesn't really make
- 7:29a strong argument for what you can do as a homeowner with a thousand dollars.
- 7:33Well, we come to learn that the show is really about the disasters
- 7:39that happened. Thank you, thank you, because what I was about to
- 7:42say there is like, Kaylani, love you, respect you, Everything you
- 7:45just said is total bullshit. The show is not about that. The show
- 7:48is not about that. The show is about, as far as I can
- 7:50tell, the ego of some designers forcing their will upon unsuspecting homeowners to create
- 7:59the ug least Holmes rooms I've ever seen. I get the feeling that like
- 8:03there's like a secret show going on behind the scenes where the homeowner or the
- 8:09decorators are kind of in a bet with each other to be like how hideous
- 8:13can I make this room and have them still pretend to like it, like
- 8:16they're doing like a producer style scam in the background. It is like a
- 8:20Japanese game show where an interior designer comes into your home, your friend's home
- 8:26and has a nervous breakdown and you get points for how much damage you can
- 8:31mitigate, like oh yeah, it's it's crazy. How as soon as they
- 8:35switch houses and they meet the designers for the first time, the designer always
- 8:39starts off with what are your thoughts about this room? And these aren't these
- 8:43people's friends, they know them really well. They say, well, they
- 8:46really really don't want X. Like one of the episodes that we watched was
- 8:52they don't want Asian inspired design, they don't want orange, they don't want
- 8:58these things. And then the designers like, well, here's what I'm thinking.
- 9:03Doesn't listen to a word that the you know, the participants of the
- 9:07show had just said and are like imposes their will, just takes their feedback
- 9:13and then crumps it into a ball and stomps on it repeatedly. Yeah,
- 9:18I really, it's so funny. When you asked me to do this,
- 9:20I remembered trading spaces, and I remembered really funny moments of it. But
- 9:24I really thought it was about the people who were designing each other's houses.
- 9:30But really it is about the designers and their bad ideas. They are basically
- 9:35manual, unpaid, manual labor with minor input, like, and they cling
- 9:41to the input that they are able to provide so desperately. We're like the
- 9:46we watched the Harlem one and they're like, we bought them a little rock
- 9:50fountain because we thought that this would be what they want, and the designers
- 9:54like cool, put it over in the corner. I don't give a shit.
- 9:56They have three ess. It was surrect y, sexy and simple.
- 10:03Didn't make anyone else really uncomfortable. How much that woman hammered she didn't want
- 10:07anything Asian, like how many times that show repeated no Asian things, nothing
- 10:11Asian like remotely Asian. It was a it was a passing remark. It
- 10:16for an off color and uncomfortable passing remark. It said in like the first
- 10:22three sentences. Yeah, like she's just like, hey, I'm Julie,
- 10:24I'm from Everett, Washington, and nothing Asian should touch my home. Yes.
- 10:28It was like I was like, well, let's just I'm sure they're
- 10:31gonna blow past that. And then it needed to come up because the designer
- 10:35was like, I'm really feeling Asian theme today. Oh yeah, And everything
- 10:39was centered around this valance or the shades that were made out of a kimono.
- 10:46Yeah, something like that. Yeah, so about about the most Asian
- 10:50thing you could have picked, essentially, like they just kind of walked there
- 10:54and we're like, hey, we're gonna turn this room into a pagoda.
- 10:58Yeah, we do. We want to pick one and focus on that and
- 11:01then we move on today. I think I think we should. So we
- 11:05watched. So first off, I'm excited for this because this is Dan and
- 11:09I's first four A into reality television. You're the first one who has brought
- 11:13up. Everything we've done so far is scripted, and I guess we got
- 11:18to get on board with this because it's about what a place to start too,
- 11:22because I had mentioned before we started recording that I did a lot of
- 11:26history on TLC and come to find out that Trading Spaces actually really does help
- 11:35facilitate the reality TV genre. Yeah, for sure. It is jess as
- 11:41influentials like Survivor, which also around the same time. Yeah, well the
- 11:46first episode, when did Survivor start? Because the first episode of Trading Spaces
- 11:50is October thirteenth of the year two thousand. Yeah, Survivor starts around the
- 11:54same time, right, Survivor The Amazing Race starts the next year. I
- 11:58started rewatching The Amazing Race recently, and that takes place in early two thousand
- 12:03and one, and there are two very big clues that indicate that. Yeah.
- 12:09Yes, and so Trading Spaces airs originally from two thousand to two thousand
- 12:16and eight on TLC, and they start. They had a reboot in twenty
- 12:20eighteen. Is that still going. I'm not sure. Didn't look like it
- 12:24it was. It doesn't seem like it's going. It's still going, which
- 12:28means Dan breaking Mayberry outlasted the Trading Spaces reboot. Yeah, suck it,
- 12:33CHLC in your faces. So it aired at a time when well, you
- 12:41want to get into the economics real quick of this U because it's two thousand.
- 12:48Yeah, it starts in the year two thousand and this is a few
- 12:52years before the subprime mortgage crisis. I just realized the show ends in two
- 13:00thousand and eight. Two thousand and eight is exactly when you should have started
- 13:03the show. Oh my gosh, I mean. But so, what was
- 13:07kind of happening was like people were buying homes that they could either just barely
- 13:13afford or not really afford. And around this time you start hearing the concept
- 13:18of what's called house poor, which is you can just afford the house,
- 13:22you can't really afford to do much else. And unfortunately, like my family
- 13:28was one of these families, we were well, my family definitely described themselves
- 13:31as house poor. Were we were house poor. We could just afford the
- 13:35house, and my parents did it. They did a great job. I'm
- 13:37really proud of them. They worked really really hard, but they worked really
- 13:41really hard to maintain a house where we had two empty rooms. It was
- 13:48the as soon as you walked into our house, it was just completely empty.
- 13:52There was like this den kind of I guess the living room area that
- 13:56was completely empty, and our dining room was completely empty. So you walk
- 14:00in and it was just like, well, we just couldn't furnish those rooms
- 14:03yet. But my parents worked really hard and they really loved interior design and
- 14:09they loved DIY and that's why so many of our weekends were spent at Loews
- 14:13and Home Depot and then watching trading spaces. It makes sense, and like
- 14:20I think one of the stretcher dollar thing, like we were also coming out
- 14:26of the nineties, like that massive economic boon. Things hadn't crashed yet and
- 14:31they wouldn't, but it was like slowing down, Like the job market was
- 14:35like no longer an absolute Like I think there was a little bit of a
- 14:39hiccup around two thousand and three, two thousand and four, but it was
- 14:43nowhere near as prolifically bad as like I think subprime mortgage crisis is technically like
- 14:48starts to percolate in two thousand and six and then really bottoms out in like
- 14:54two thousand and eight, when that's like what we really think of as that
- 14:58crisis. That how this show gets infinitely sadder when you consider how many of
- 15:03these people were on redecorating homes that they were living in that they could not
- 15:07afford. We're basically watching like evidence for the mortgage crisis. This is stuff
- 15:13that people could have used in the Big Short Yeah, totally the stuff they
- 15:18could have used in a class action lawsuit. So that's just kidding. No
- 15:22one will ever be punished for that. So we talked a little bit about
- 15:26the economics, but like, this is also happening in the year two thousands,
- 15:31so it's like, okay, history of TLC time. What would you
- 15:37think if I told you that NASA founded the Learning Channel? That would make
- 15:45sense? Yeah, that would I follow that because I remember as a small
- 15:48child, TLC was like nothing but space footage. Yeah, I like a
- 15:54puppet bird that was an astronaut. I don't remember his name, but I
- 15:56remember a like bird muppet that talked about space a lot. Yes, it
- 16:00was birthed in nineteen seventy two technically when the Department of Health and Education partnered
- 16:06with NASA and they wanted to start an educational channel, so they had all
- 16:10this educational programming. In nineteen eighty it gets acquired by Central Appalachian Network and
- 16:15it's then called the Learning Channel TLC and nineteen ninety one, Discovery buys it
- 16:22for I think like thirty one point five million dollars something like that, and
- 16:26they continued this educational Initiative, and yes there was that space program. I
- 16:30remember that Space program. There was also another docuse series about dinosaurs, but
- 16:36the programming was really really dry until nineteen ninety eight. Do you remember what
- 16:42was that show, Trauma Life in the Er? I do remember Trauma Life
- 16:47in the Y. That was one of my sister's shows. I remember.
- 16:49I remember TLC as a child being like the channel that makes dinosaurs boring.
- 16:55Yeah, it was so dry. I was just like, like my parents
- 16:59would be like, do you want to watch this? This is everything you
- 17:00think is cool? Look it's dinosaurs in space and I'm like this. It
- 17:07was drive, but they they hit on something. Let that becomes part of
- 17:14their big rebrand in the year two thousand, which is people really like that
- 17:18it's reality. But it was also it was like they sent a docuseriies crew
- 17:23to film real people, real life, real things and it strikes on the
- 17:30drama of trauma. And yeah, that's so shortly after they rebrand, and
- 17:37that's when Trading Spaces comes to fruition. But it comes into fruition with like
- 17:42other shows and it just turns into a landslide of like Junkyard Wars, John
- 17:48and Kate bless A, nineteen Kids in County, Hoarders, all these shows,
- 17:52my strange addiction, Honey Boo Boo, and all of the Honey Boo
- 17:56Boo cinematic universe, like all comes out of the trading spaces phenomenon. You
- 18:03might be saying, listeners, wait, those channels. Those shows weren't all
- 18:07on TLC. Some of those were on A and E. Some of those
- 18:11were on other networks, Bravo. It was all the same team. It's
- 18:15all the same guy pretty much putting all these together, realizing this ship is
- 18:21cheap as as hell to make to make, and it doesn't matter how tacky
- 18:26it is, We'll watch it and slurp it up because of the tackiness.
- 18:30I'm not saying yeah, I'm not saying that to pretend like I'm above anybody.
- 18:36I also slurp up the tackiness. That's the premise of this entire show.
- 18:40Like it's like weirdly comforting. It is this kind of it's weirdly relatable
- 18:47because these are real life people. But then you also kind of feel like,
- 18:51oh, I'm you know, not, I don't know, it's just
- 18:55it does feel a little exploitative. It's it's kind like I don't. I
- 19:02don't normally watch shows like this, um uh than us No. No,
- 19:08I was about to say I watch a different kind of dumb bullshit, Like
- 19:14now that this is all dumb bullshit, I'm but when I was trying to
- 19:17this, like there's a weird like cathartic thrill of like it feels like you're
- 19:21rooting around in someone else's life. Um where it's like it's very like not
- 19:26even voyeuristic, because the entire time I'm like, I'm I'm judging these people
- 19:30and I'm trying to figure out what the dynamic is between them. Are they
- 19:34fighting those they're like an incident between scenes and it definitely like it. It
- 19:41feels like sort of like more than voyeuristic where you're actually like digging around in
- 19:47someone else's like world. Oh and some of it and but bt dubs the
- 19:52shows I listed are actually all TLC show but I could haven and oh yeah,
- 20:00I think they rebroadcast it, but I think correct me if I'm wrong.
- 20:03But I think there was like Hoarders Buried Alive was on TLC. Maybe
- 20:07I'm wrong about like the normal like Hoarders Listen, you did actual research to
- 20:12this. I'm going off my memory, so we're gonna default to you.
- 20:15But I'm pretty sure Hoarders was an E broadcast because I know some of Honey
- 20:21Booboo stuff is also not on TLC like sometimes it's on other other channels,
- 20:26because ANY also went through a big rebrand around this time, because ANY used
- 20:30to be the Arts and Entertainment Network, and it was because nothing's more artistic
- 20:34than saving everything. Yeah, and it was, and it would have like
- 20:41boring operas, but also the show biography was on there, and it would
- 20:45just be like, hey, here's here's an hour we're gonna tell you about
- 20:48the entire life of Tom Hanks. Wasn't Wasn't Hoarders very like it tried to
- 20:52be very like somber at first, and it was like, look at the
- 20:56state of these people's addiction. Yeah, it's kind of like there were moments
- 21:03where it really was kind of it was I'm looking at the Wikipedia. Yeah,
- 21:08it's hoarding Buried Alive. So sorry, Hoarders must have been so it
- 21:14was like a spin off. Sorry, but yeah, I forget. I
- 21:15think it was. Hoarders was like actually a little bit more like they had
- 21:21a psychologist that would come and give them therapy and kind of also educate people
- 21:26on why hoarding is such a phenomenon and what are the kind of underlying issues
- 21:32that cause it. So I feel like, yeah, maybe an he was
- 21:34a little bit more educational about it. I'm sure there's now like wacky sound
- 21:40effects and takes to the camera. My question would be like, isn't an
- 21:44actual psychologist or is it like Karamo from A Queer Eye for the Straight Guy
- 21:48another influential reality show where it's just like, this guy's gonna come and give
- 21:52you advice and tell you about your life, but he has zero qualifications to
- 21:56do. So his qualification was it was the queer perspective. Yeah. Uh,
- 22:03so let's let's go ahead and jump to where this this wall ends up.
- 22:10Like I said, this is all the doing of one team, one
- 22:11guy essentially. Uh. And now David Zaslov, the CEO of Discovery,
- 22:18is also now the the CEO person in charge of Warner Brothers Discovery since the
- 22:23merger. So every scripted television show, every animated series that you love that
- 22:30suddenly disappeared off of HBO, Max, Uh, Justice for the Summer Camp
- 22:34Island. Uh, It's it's it's all this guy Sale on Infinity Train,
- 22:42I guess right on Infinity of these all of these shows I love, but
- 22:45it's it's it's because it's because they realized people tune into this and uh,
- 22:52these shows, which cost nothing to make, have a giant audience. And
- 22:56streaming is also a just wayland so they can get more subscribers if they just
- 23:03say, come here and subscribe, and you can get all of the Chip
- 23:06and Joanna gains you ever want. And it kind of starts here at trading
- 23:08spaces, training spaces. I think though definitely hit a sweet spot because it
- 23:15is reality. We are looking into these people lives, these strangers. But
- 23:19more than that, you see the recurring characters. They have the same designers
- 23:26come over and over again. They have the same carpenter show up over again.
- 23:29And as Dan was alluding to, I think everyone who worked on these
- 23:32shows kind of hated each other. They're sniping constantly. They've all slept together.
- 23:41Yes, they're like flirting, they're like arguing with one another. There's
- 23:45clear beef between them. So yeah, and if you've ever worked in a
- 23:48kitchen, that's the vibe that's going off. It's basically the fucking bearing And
- 23:52you're also competing for the carpenter's time. So there's a lot of times where
- 23:59the designers are arguing because there is only it's usually either Thy Pennington or there
- 24:04was one episode where it was Amy Win and um, yeah, they're all
- 24:10competing for Well, no, my project is you know, has priority.
- 24:14Ty Pennington fucking hates these people. He like, I know him from Extreme
- 24:19Home Makeover. He was like, I'm the fun, whacky guy and on
- 24:22this he's like, yeah, I'll make it your fucking shelves. Jesus Christ.
- 24:27It was very weird, stupid. It was very weird because with Tie
- 24:32Pennington, especially because he was the only name that I had ever heard before.
- 24:34Like Dan said, I didn't know he had a personality, and I
- 24:38didn't also didn't know that personality was a sarcastic dick. So he alternates between
- 24:44mugging for the camera because he's really clearly auditioning for that host role. Yeah,
- 24:48which Kaylani you would know all about. So he's very clearly pushing for
- 24:52that angle, but alternates between that and just kind of going fuck you,
- 24:56fuck you, yeah, fuck you. Let's t about the episode. We've
- 25:00spent twenty five minutes introducing the concept of trading spaces. I think I think
- 25:04people will understand it, but I think we give good, good context.
- 25:07We watch two episodes. Do we want to start with Harlem and ease ourselves
- 25:11in or do we want to jump straight to Washington and no, I think
- 25:15we start with Harlem. We start with Harlem. So we watched two episodes.
- 25:19I think they might have come from the same season. It was a
- 25:22bitch to find like watchable episodes on these You can't for being such a marketable
- 25:27property, you can't buy or rent episodes anywhere. We're gonna put links in
- 25:33the bio. So we've basically wound up finding like weird uploads on YouTube.
- 25:41Most of them were taken from like old VHS tapes. I think one of
- 25:42them came from like the son of a couple that was on the show,
- 25:48and so it was just like a VHS tape of his parents' episode see him
- 25:52hitting play on the VHS. The greediness of it was so charming. It
- 25:57really kind of adds to the atmosphere that you're about to watch someone be murdered,
- 26:03Like it really really as that. So we watched those. We watched
- 26:07two. One is set in Harlem, the other is set in Everett,
- 26:11Washington, which is a suburb of Seattle, and I think those those two
- 26:15things are very different or are very distinct. Um, Kaylanie, I don't
- 26:21remember the names of any of these people. So if you want to give
- 26:22the names of the designers, oh my godness, Okay, so I don't.
- 26:26I don't remember the names of the couple. Oh you know what,
- 26:29you know what? Hang on, I don't. Yeah, the names of
- 26:30the couples are are irrelevant. I actually havens though I actually have the design
- 26:37Okay, good god. Yeah, So let's start. Let's start in Uh,
- 26:44let's start in Harlem. So our host Paige Davis comes in and basically
- 26:51talks like a white woman talking about Harlem. Uh but did you guys know
- 26:56that Harlem had jazz? Because this was my first time learning about it.
- 27:00I this was complete news to me. It was. It's very rough to
- 27:04watch her sit there and go we're in the streets of Harlem and it's jazzy
- 27:10and yazz. Yeah, band leader Duke Ellington's like house. It's very weird.
- 27:22She's got the very quintessential nineties haircut. It's almost the Rachel but not
- 27:27quite the Rachel. Uh. And she's wearing a green T shirt with a
- 27:33stylized cartoon cat. I'm so glad that you brought that up, because I
- 27:37have in my notes early two thousands graphic teas as a thing to talk about.
- 27:41Got them high rise jeans on there too. Yes, one thing I
- 27:47love about the way they talk about Harlem, which is jazz, was one
- 27:52point. The woman from the green shirt couple just like kind of like talking
- 27:56to her partner, just goes, they know that we have stuff other than
- 27:59jazz, as right, that doesn't We're a complicated neighborhood with a lot of
- 28:03history and just moves past it. Yeah, there's uh so the teams here
- 28:10the it's an all female team, all white women. The designer is the
- 28:15host and the carpenter. Kia. Oh, I don't think Kia wash No,
- 28:18I'm sorry, Oh sorry, okay, yes, Kia, Kia is.
- 28:23There's one there's one black woman. She wasn't working on the black couple's
- 28:27house, was she, because it was it was the white, red haired
- 28:30woman who said all the jazz thing. Oh yeah, she's like when I
- 28:33think of Harlem, I think of ragtime and jazz. Yeah, which was
- 28:40not indicative in her design at all it was. It was very awkward listening
- 28:45to this Laurie Smith Suburbs Laurie Smith. Uh, this redheaded white woman from
- 28:52the suburbs, this escaped sex in the city extra just talking to this black
- 28:59couple that lives in Harlem about Harlem. It was painful. And that's like
- 29:04one, I'm gonna blame that on the producers. Like there's probably a producer
- 29:10saying like, connect this to the neighborhood somehow. H but so so they
- 29:17take over this um. So we have two couples. They are I don't
- 29:22know, I don't know their names. They are neighbors, they are friends.
- 29:26Uh. One of them has a bedroom that is kind of drab and
- 29:32plain and doesn't want and that's the one with the three s's that you mentioned.
- 29:37Yes, the neighbors essentially came in with a strategy I think in their
- 29:41designer was Kia and she was like, Okay, we want the three s's
- 29:47serenity, sexy and simple. And they also gifted their friends they really nice
- 29:53accent fountain for their ruige and their access fountain. That that fountain broke me
- 30:00because they were like, here's an access found. We put a lot of
- 30:03thought into getting this, and the designer was like, I that's fine.
- 30:07I could not give less of a shit. And then at the end when
- 30:10the entire apartment is a disaster, they're like, have you seen the fountain
- 30:15And they're like, we love the fountain life. But the sake we explained
- 30:22to is to our audience, we're going to need to come up with a
- 30:25way to describe these couples. So we'll say, couple a with Kia the
- 30:30orange shirt couple. Yeah, Orange team, because it's also it's listed as
- 30:33a game show, so it is gamified, so we can like it's Orange
- 30:37team and Green Team. They're they're the orange iguanas in the green monkeys.
- 30:42That's where we're going with. We're going legend to the hidden tumple on this,
- 30:47and then the next one is blue barracudas and purple parakeets. I think,
- 30:55yeah, yeah, parents, it's purple parents. But you're close.
- 30:57You're close. Uh okay, So the Orange team is working on the Green
- 31:03team's house. Green team is working on the Orange team's house. The Green
- 31:06team is working with designer Laurie Smith, who I'm pretty sure I've dated at
- 31:11some point, like a very enthusiastic but poorly planned out redhead. Yeah,
- 31:21that's that's everyone I dated in my twenties. Uh So, Laurie Smith is
- 31:25working with them, and then Kia is working with the Orange team. Kia
- 31:30is putting together with the Orange team for the Green team, for the Green
- 31:36This is harder than I thought. It was going to be a bedroom and
- 31:37her big idea is a Murphy bed. She says, we're in Harlem,
- 31:45We're in a city. Space is at a premium. So what we're going
- 31:48to do is we're going to build shelving into the entire wall and the bed's
- 31:52gonna be in the wall. And she presents it like it's this absolutely like
- 31:59my blowing revolution of interior design, Like what if there was a bed in
- 32:04a wall? And then like twenty minutes later, pages goes, so you're
- 32:07giving them a Murphy bed, and yes, it's a fucking Murphy bed.
- 32:12Yes, but it also was not a small bedroom because if I remember correctly,
- 32:15they also had an office in their bedroom was kind of like a cohabitation
- 32:19space, but it was not a small bedroom. The Murphy bed is like
- 32:23cartoons shorthand for poor people. Right. The Muppets used this gag that you
- 32:30have a bunch of people crammed from Murphy bed and the bed always like that
- 32:32is it is, it is such has such baggage to it. It's also
- 32:37a falsehood because it doesn't really give you more space because most of the time
- 32:43your bed's gonna be down. Like they had to drink their entire apartment by
- 32:47like a foot. They had to hide it into the wall. Yeah,
- 32:52but not only that, they had these like sliding walls that would cover the
- 32:57shelves, so if you had the bed down needed to access the shelves,
- 33:00you couldn't. Yeah, And doing all of this, they really should have
- 33:07done some sound mixing because to open the Murphy bed you had to move the
- 33:10wooden things aside, which was loud, and then you had and then they
- 33:15gave you every single creak of that Murphy bed descend. It was like a
- 33:19metal And also they had to prefab all of this and they only have forty
- 33:24eight hours if that, because I honestly don't think it's a true forty eight
- 33:30hours, because they have one full day where they do the key swap,
- 33:34they do a little bit of work overnight. They always have homework right the
- 33:37designer leaves and they're left with homework, which I think it's important in this
- 33:40episode to mention that Kia's team, the Murphybed team, didn't do their homework
- 33:49because I guess whatever, the plaster dried and they were like, up,
- 33:53the plaster dried, can't do the project overnight, so it set them back
- 33:59hard. Cool. How would you guys react if you came home and suddenly
- 34:04there was a Murphy bed? I am? I am I the only person
- 34:08with an intense emotional reaction to that. I'd be mad because I am going
- 34:14to pull that out every night. I didn't realize that I had strong feelings
- 34:17about the concept of the Murphy bed, but apparently I do. It's bullshit.
- 34:23It is a lie. Right you say it saves you space, but
- 34:27no, it fucking doesn't. I can't I put the bed up, and
- 34:30I've got all this space here. What am I gonna do with it?
- 34:34Like I can't put a table there, I can't put a weight bench.
- 34:37All of a sudden, you know it's a lie. It's a false space.
- 34:40You can usually have to move all the other furniture to accommodate the fact
- 34:45that you need to pull out a bed every single night. And yeah,
- 34:49you did attention never going up. Ever, that bed is staying down because
- 34:52also they're gonna be like, well, I've woken up, it's time to
- 34:55completely strip my entire bed and and then raise it and then close two things,
- 35:02and then when I want to go to sleep, I have to remake
- 35:05my entire bed. Now I can't even get me to put pillowcases on half
- 35:09the time, right, Yeah, And to your point, Dan, no,
- 35:15you're wrong. You're wrong. That bed is going to go up quite
- 35:17often because eventually they're going to need to get to their own shit. They
- 35:22have to give to get to their own stuff. Because Kaylawnie wisely pointed out
- 35:27this bed installation includes built in shelves that become completely inaccessible when you open the
- 35:34doors to pull down the bed. So now my bed is there, and
- 35:38I'll go, well, time to go reach over here from my book or
- 35:40my alarm clock in thump, there's a door in the way. It's such
- 35:45a dipshit design. It was also a massive undertaking because you have a time
- 35:52limitation, you also have a budget limitation, and it took them nearly all
- 35:57of the time to do just the bed and the shelves. They don't finish
- 36:04the finish sadly and the like the designer is like nearly crying as they drag
- 36:12her out, and she's like desponded because she's like, I fucked up.
- 36:17She had a vision. She she was more upset that her vision didn't get
- 36:22executed. Yeah, Dan, you're you're putting some level of remorse there.
- 36:27Yeah, they show no remorse, which we'll find out in the next episode.
- 36:31They don't take accountability, she said as they dragged her away, saying
- 36:37it's time, like time to go, like like Paige basically has her in
- 36:40an arm lock, just dragging her off as she screamed, I put so
- 36:45much of myself into this and I'm and I'm at the TV screaming, Yeah,
- 36:50that's the problem. Like it's if I did something like a Murphy bed,
- 36:57that would be a six month conversation with my partner where we would figure
- 37:02out how that would work logistically and basically rearrange our entire lives around having a
- 37:08Murphy bed. And they were just like, I'm philli Murphy bed today.
- 37:13I've looked at your apartment once, but let's pull the trigger on this.
- 37:17The only world a Murphy bed would work in is like a guest room that
- 37:22duels as some other room that like, you don't pull it out all of
- 37:25the time. It's like a pullout couch. You don't pull it out all
- 37:29the time, but it's kind of convenient when it's there. Yeah, well
- 37:32we put it up so that we can move in the air hockey table when
- 37:37nobody's staying here. Yeah, and k Yeah, it's great for an airbian
- 37:40beer. And Kai spends all their time and all their money on that project,
- 37:47as evidence by the fact that by the end she's just going to her
- 37:50own house and pulling shit out of her own attic and painting it and calling
- 37:54it decor. She has like some Pan African symbol. There's an oncin there,
- 38:00there's some sort of African bird that all looked like they were props in
- 38:05like an eighth grade play about Africa. Yes, it is impressive where sometimes
- 38:10the designers get stuff because I think at one point she trash picked something from
- 38:16the home depot, which I was surprised that they were allowed to say they
- 38:23in the later episodes they don't. In the next episode they say the home
- 38:28good or the home furnishing store. They don't say no. Yeah, well,
- 38:32Kia, one point is like, oh, I trash picked this from
- 38:37the home depot, which I was to that. I was like, wow,
- 38:40that that could have been branded content. But I think this is before
- 38:45people really likely yeah it was. It definitely wasn't, but it probably was
- 38:50before a time where they realized that anytime you drop a product's name is an
- 38:52opportunity to make money. Like she's having a full on nervous breakdown by the
- 39:01end of the episode, where it is like like she's like snapping at page
- 39:07and she's just basically yelling it or in shirts like work faster. They were
- 39:13looking at the head and I remember the one guy on Kia's team was trying
- 39:17to upholster something and he's like, how much time do we have? Should
- 39:22I panic? And she just is like, you need to panic. The
- 39:27designers that work on this show needed it to run forever, because there is
- 39:32no way they got hired after this went off the air, because I would
- 39:37if I just googled Kia's name, I'd be like, well, there's her
- 39:42having a nervous breakdown in somebody's apartment, painting everything yellow and then fucking off.
- 39:46So probably not gonna hire her to do my outdoor renovation. But it
- 39:51feels like watching Hearts of Darkness, right, Yeah, Like they treat like
- 39:57redoing this bedroom as if they are filming a pock lips. Now, So,
- 40:01so what did you think of Lorie's design? Though? The other the
- 40:06couple that did finish their room. I was about to ask, is there
- 40:08anything interesting about them about that? No, she kind of liked it.
- 40:15I thought, I mean, I'm a sucker for Sage Green. But she
- 40:16had some interesting, like there's always a little cute DIY projects, Like the
- 40:21show is kind of in sections where there's all these, oh, painting tips
- 40:27or furnishing tips, but then there's always some kind of DIY project that the
- 40:31designers pull out. And she did kind of like a palm frond, like
- 40:36that you paint on a canvas and kind of leave an imprint. It's like
- 40:38some kind of like a kid's art project, and it was kind of cute.
- 40:44I wouldn't do it. Think that's cute. I think that's fine.
- 40:45I think I think it is a nice little like, oh, our friends
- 40:49made this for us kind of yeah. Yeah. But other than that,
- 40:52their whole excursion is pretty uneventful, uninteresting. I thought the yellow upholstery on
- 40:59the oh that was ugly. It. We saw the plants and we were
- 41:04like, oh man, those things are going to do. But these months,
- 41:06I thought they were plastic plastic. The upholstery on the dining room chairs
- 41:12it was just a slipcover over one of those chairs that has like the kind
- 41:16of holes through. It was like a very nineties. This was also really
- 41:20fun. It was a lot of these houses was updating intensely nineties houses to
- 41:25what people thought was going to be the new millennium. I was so shocked
- 41:30that the crazy lady who wouldn't shut up about Harlem wasn't the problematic one.
- 41:36I thought she was going to go absolutely berserk, and when she just kind
- 41:39of kept her head down and did very basic redesign and then everything was fine,
- 41:45I was like, I would have bet money that you were going to
- 41:49lose your mind doing this. So speaking of the end of the millennium or
- 41:54the end of the millium, getting into this as sort of a appartif or
- 41:59as soon as a Kailanie, what is a mid meal? Oh like a
- 42:04palate cleanser and a mouse bush as in a mouse boost, thank you,
- 42:08Kaylani, as in a mouse I knew I was wrong when I said appartif.
- 42:13Oh no, Well, it's funny because it's like, so, I
- 42:15have another newsletter that I didn't mention at the top of the podcast because it's
- 42:19kind of like my mus letter called a mouse boosh, which is big ideas
- 42:22in small bites but continue cute as as an amuse boosch. Here, before
- 42:28we go to the Harlem episode, I want to talk about one additional episode
- 42:31that I flipped through because the quality was pretty bad, and that is the
- 42:37Seventh Heaven crossover episode. I thought maybe we could get a two for here
- 42:42because Seventh Heaven was one of my mom's shows, Like that was a show
- 42:46that was on rotation in my house. But this clearly happens very late into
- 42:53the Seventh Heaven run because by this point some of the big names have left
- 42:58the show. You're the premise of this is it's still trading spaces except two
- 43:01of the male actors. By the way, did you know that Seventh Heaven
- 43:06had two actors who were brothers who played brothers on the show. No,
- 43:09no idea. It was very weird. These are weird dudes. I hated
- 43:14it very much. And also they didn't show up until like season seven or
- 43:17eight because the other guys who were playing the older brothers were like, you
- 43:22know what, we're out of here. We're better than this spoiler alert They
- 43:25weren't, but they bailed and they were replaced with two other guys who were
- 43:30actual brothers who also lived together, and there their couple a in this,
- 43:35their blue shirt couple. The other couple in this is Beverly Mitchell and Jessica
- 43:40Biel, who who are the other two who are two of the female characters
- 43:46on Seventh Heaven. They're two of the sisters, and they are redoing Beverly
- 43:51Mitchell's garage and the guys whose names are unimportant, they're like they're having their
- 43:58apartment like living room read on and it's very weird because it looks like like
- 44:05like, my apartment is nicer, is way nicer than what they live in.
- 44:07It looks it looks like it is this apartment that is rented by two
- 44:12twenty five year old actors that live together. Biggest Clemon Fame is a recurring
- 44:15role on seven seven. Anyway, this is mostly uninteresting beyond the weird sexualization
- 44:25of Jessica Biel. It culminates in the designer Hilde Saint Santo Tomas, who
- 44:34is um history's greatest monster. Oh yeah, her designs were consistently insane.
- 44:44Anyway, There's there's a scene as I'm as I'm flipping through and I'm just
- 44:49going through the YouTube, I'm like, Okay, this is boring, this
- 44:52is boring. Jessica Biele is taking off her shirt. What And there's a
- 44:55bit where I have to go back and watch why is Jessica be Why is
- 45:00like nineteen year old Jessica Beale taking off her shirt and they're taking pictures of
- 45:05like the back, like the small of her back, and like Beverley mitchell
- 45:09Is is taking pictures of them. So so this was the idea that they
- 45:14had that Hilde had for the boy's apartment. They come in, they reveal
- 45:20the apartment. They go, oh, hey, cool, you you built
- 45:23a hunch for our TV. Oh you painted the wall. Whose panties are
- 45:28those? There? Is? There are pictures on the wall of like sexy
- 45:32pictures of like the close up of a woman's hip and she's pulling like her
- 45:36panties out of her out of her pocket or like the back of uh,
- 45:42like like a woman's like behind and like the small of her backage. Right,
- 45:45Yeah, this is a very for some reason in the two early two,
- 45:50early mid two thousand's is like such a provocative space. It's like the
- 45:54tramp stamp area. This is exactly exactly, Yeah, it's this is why
- 46:00you wear low rise jeans and like like tummy shirts. Yeah it's yeah,
- 46:05so exactly. So it's like hips and small of the back in almost pubic
- 46:09hair or whatever, but like pant but like whale tails are coming out,
- 46:13like panties are coming up above them, and they're like so these are framed
- 46:16in like blown up in large silver frames. And page has to point out,
- 46:23so, uh, those hips are hildy. That is Jessica's, and
- 46:30that is Beverly. So they took pictures of the sexy parts of their bodies
- 46:35and framed them and put them on the wall. All right, So Kaylanie,
- 46:38kaylie. You you're you go on a date with a man, a
- 46:43young actor. You go home with him, uh, and you see framed
- 46:47on his wall are pictures of another woman's panties. Are they at least in
- 46:54black and white? Because I feel black and white mildly tasteful, mildly all
- 47:00right, black and white is saving that by the skin of its teeth.
- 47:06No, no, no, no, let me let me point out to
- 47:07you they are his coworker's panties. Now, that's just a line, that's
- 47:12a boundary. That's really wrong. But also was Hilde you said there was
- 47:17a photo of Yeah, that is so vain and also not a trading spaces
- 47:22first, because there's an episode. I think it's Genevieve who paints a mural
- 47:27of herself. Also Hilde Kaylani. Can we all right? Can we do
- 47:34a subject Hige? Do we want to just talk about Hilde and isolation?
- 47:37Because you also sent us a list of trading places fails and they're all Hildy.
- 47:45They're all Hildy. Hilde is insane. I just has such a bad
- 47:50idea like her. She goes into a space and is like, let's throw
- 47:55Hay on the wall, and people were like, my baby's allergic. Please.
- 48:01But before we move on to Hildie or maybe as a way to a
- 48:04segue into Hildy, I just want to say one thing, one last thing
- 48:07about the naval pictures, the smaller the back pictures, and that it is
- 48:13yes, there are three. One is Beverly Mitchell, one is Jessica Biale,
- 48:16these nineteen to twenty two year old actresses, and the third one is
- 48:22Hilde going, yeah, I'm in the same class. I'm just as sexy.
- 48:27She's insane. She put her face on somebody's wall, the wall of
- 48:32strangers, and it's just her face, and I can't imagine her selling that
- 48:38anybody on that. I think they just came in and were like, what
- 48:43the hell is this and she's like, I did it. You're welcome.
- 48:46Hildee is like I have trouble processing her as a human being. She feels
- 48:52like almost like an estra, extra dimensional entity that just drifts through reality,
- 48:58ruining every thing. Like I feel like she's like some horrible version of Doctor
- 49:04Who that like was there at the release of the Bubonic Plague and like was
- 49:09there at Waterloo giving Napoleon advice, like just decor advice. Yeah, she
- 49:19convinced Napoleon to wear that fucking hat. Hilde Santo Tomas is like if Nathan
- 49:24Fielder were a real housewife a year. That's accurate, that's really accurate,
- 49:34But it would be like you got Hildie, you knew you were in trouble.
- 49:37Yeah. Yeah, there is a hungry darkness behind her eyes that could
- 49:44never be fit. She really took risks and got the wrong kind of attention.
- 49:50But I mean, really, these kinds of reality TV shows, when
- 49:54they happen, I feel like they also helped facilitate that whole fluencer craise where
- 50:01it's like, yeah, oh h like anyone can be famous now and anyone
- 50:08can get lots of attention. And all of these shows also are niched down,
- 50:14like Trading Spaces is a DIY show, This is a Pinterest board waiting
- 50:19to happen. This is like a DIY TikTok waiting to happen. But Hilde
- 50:23just feels like she is the drama queen that doesn't mind getting hype for being
- 50:30a really bad designer. I mean, although I gotta admit she design,
- 50:34I can't say she's a bad designer. It's just that her designs are out
- 50:37of this, out of this world, like she completes them, she does
- 50:43them. I have I have an important question. Do you if Hilde,
- 50:47instead of being a creature of the nineties and early two thousands, if Hilde
- 50:52was a creature of now, of Instagram and TikTok, do you think she
- 50:54would be fair better or worse? Oh? She would she would be the
- 51:00wellness to white supremacy pipeline, Like I just know that's like her brand.
- 51:07Can can we go ahead? And and just we've danced around it numerous times.
- 51:13I message Dan while watching this, saying, Dan, this ship is
- 51:15racist. This show feels racist. No, sometimes blatant and sometimes underlying,
- 51:22you know, kind of in the way that like a Hallmark Christmas movie feels
- 51:25a little racist, but you can't quite tell how. Yeah, like Dan,
- 51:30this this ship is racist. This show is racist. And I think
- 51:34let's let's go and sneak and slide this in here. I'm glad that completely
- 51:37random that we chose these two episodes. It's basically with the two episodes that
- 51:40I could find that we're watchable on YouTube. Um, but I think it's
- 51:45important that we chose one in Harlem, uh and one in Everett, Washington.
- 51:52Yeah, because I think I think this show does not work in a
- 51:55city. This show does not work in like a Brownstone in New York.
- 52:00This is a suburbs show. This is a show by in four. They
- 52:04even discussed like how they there were kind of problems with doing I guess,
- 52:08like I don't know, they were like, oh, was this the first
- 52:10time that I think that that Harlem. I think that was the first time
- 52:15they had done a show in a major city, like in an urban in
- 52:19an urban setting, because part of the premise of the show is that they
- 52:22need the neighbors need to be within walking distance of one another, they need
- 52:27to actually have parking. That actually was a stipulation, so because they need
- 52:31to bring in like lots of trucks, and they need to bring in production
- 52:35crew and they so essentially this city block must have been closed down. But
- 52:39it sounds like they went to great feats to do this production in Harlem,
- 52:45which it kind of you know it then you miss a whole aspect of what
- 52:52it's like to live in a city. I mean, later on when they
- 52:55drop Page as a host, they do have a Philly episode, and that's
- 52:59like kind of like a like you do a Philly Brownstone. I didn't watch
- 53:02the episode, so I don't know if they had similar issues, but I
- 53:07got five seconds in and I was like, this is going to elicit too
- 53:10strong of emotions. I was going to ask because I also didn't watch the
- 53:14Philadelphia episode, but also philip just like New York, Philadelphia is a pretty
- 53:20big city. There are places in that are technically Philadelphia where you have a
- 53:24full like a full yard, a separated house of two stories. There are
- 53:30places that you can go to and buy those houses. They're crazy. They're
- 53:35crazy expensive. Now I don't know how expensive they were in the year two
- 53:37thousand, but you can still be like in East Falls or a German like
- 53:44I because I guess it was the this was Yeah, speaking of the random
- 53:47people that upload episodes of Trading Spaces, the only reason I found the Philadelphia
- 53:53episode was it was a specific artist whose art was featured on the show,
- 53:59and I guess he had uploaded the entire episode. But that was a Philadelphia
- 54:04brown story. I think they were actually doing what looked like those two stories
- 54:07South Philly homes. Oh it's like a row home. Yeah, it was
- 54:12a row They were doing row homes. Okay, So so they're in like
- 54:15fucking Wharton Street. Yeah yeah, okay, I gotta watch that. Now.
- 54:21There's sort of a class element to it because when they do it in
- 54:24somebody's studio apartment versus when they do it in a room of somebody's house,
- 54:30like, the changes they make in that apartment potentially life ruining. Yeah,
- 54:37which is like genuinely like those people with the Murphy bed, They're like they're
- 54:42stuck with that Murphy bed. They either have to move or spend another like
- 54:47eight Like there were stories. There were stories about people who had to fix
- 54:53their rooms afterward or like. So the hay Room is a really really pop
- 55:00one that people point to where I guess it was Hildie like glued hey all
- 55:05over people's walls. And when they brought their child, like first off that
- 55:09people hated it. They were like, it smells like a barn. And
- 55:13then they brought their child into it, and the child had a lot of
- 55:16allergic like they had an allergic reaction to the wall. But not only that,
- 55:20I guess they had built a shelf and the shelf fell and they were
- 55:22really concerned that, hey, this could have fallen on my child and hurt
- 55:27my child, but it was hey, it was a bookshelf. It was
- 55:31a bookshelf that they didn't secure to the wall, which is like, which
- 55:36is like homeownership one oh one, secure your bookshelves. Yes, it gives
- 55:40you the little screw spot for a reason. Yeah, And it took what
- 55:45was it several people seventeen hours to get all of the hay Off of the
- 55:50Wall. And if you think of the concept of the show being forty eight
- 55:52hours with only two or three people, that is a huge undertaking. And
- 55:59sometimes like it's more expensive that what it costs to redesign the room. And
- 56:04there was there was another one where, um, they it was a family
- 56:07with like two kids, and they put in cement floors, yes, and
- 56:13tables with really sharp corners, and they were like, well, we basically
- 56:16have to immediately undo all the changes because it is an oppressing danger to our
- 56:22children. Yeah. Yeah, But kind of going back to the racism of
- 56:28the show, I think that was also the racism of the time. Like
- 56:30there were like in the early two thousands, I think it was very common
- 56:35to just kind of like lat Like for instance, in the Harlem episode,
- 56:38there is a point where Kia is trying to describe all of those African symbols
- 56:45and educate and pages just joking and joking and making fun and like picking fun
- 56:52at the decorations, and Kia is just literally like I'm trying to educate people
- 56:59here. And I do feel bad that she didn't get to execute her full
- 57:02design. I can't decide whether or not it's because she spent a lot of
- 57:08time on that Murphy bed or it's like, I don't know if she managed
- 57:13her time well. But I mean later on they bring on a designer who
- 57:16I really liked. His name was Verne Yip and he is one of the
- 57:22only like him and Kia are like one of the like they're the two like
- 57:28people of color on this show. And in all honesty, Verne's designs were
- 57:32actually the best. He actually went into this show being really earnest and being
- 57:37really real and making like actually taking people's considerations into thought as he went and
- 57:45executed all of his designs. But he did a great job. And I
- 57:49think that like people treated him really poorly on the show. It feels like
- 57:52they would have brought him on because they were like, Okay, we gotta
- 57:55bring some we gotta do something. Yeah, we have too many like women,
- 58:00mysical white women who want to turn everybody's rooms into circus tents, and
- 58:06also people are threatening to sue, so yeah, we got we gotta do
- 58:09something. Okay, actually, kay, let's go ahead and do this.
- 58:13Then you had a specific designer you wanted to make sure we talked about.
- 58:17Doug Wilson is the most confidently arrogant designer in the Trading Spaces Cinematic universe because
- 58:30he is so rude. He truly doesn't care about what anyone has to say,
- 58:37and he will just go and do whatever the hell he wants. But
- 58:43there is one epic incident where he I forget exactly what the couple wanted,
- 58:51but like, they go into this like I don't know if they wanted to
- 58:53preserve the fireplace or like basically homeowners can and say like these things are off
- 59:01limits and in their paperwork and in their documentation, and Doug Wilson would just
- 59:07very very blatantly just go against all of their wishes. But he installed this
- 59:13ugly, ugly fixture over a fireplace, like made it, accentuated it in
- 59:21such an awful way, and then also put like brown cubes or like brown
- 59:28like paint all over the walls. It was disgusting, but he like it
- 59:35starts with like I guess Paige asking him about the design, and he's justifying
- 59:39it and thinking about, oh, patting himself on the back. But they
- 59:45bring the couple in and the wife just she takes it in, and I
- 59:49really admire her poise. She takes it in. Poor woman, tries to
- 59:53put on a good face, and she just turns to Page and she goes,
- 59:59excuse me, I just needed to go into the other room for a
- 1:00:01moment. And she walks out of the room really calmly, but she's still
- 1:00:06on the mic, so it's a hot mic, and you just hear her
- 1:00:08sobbing. She is crying ball. It's one of the most awkward, painful
- 1:00:15things I've ever seen on television because her husband is sitting there going, oh
- 1:00:17boy, she doesn't like that, and yees doing her job. Page's job
- 1:00:22is to try to like save face or whatever. But you just forget,
- 1:00:25like any ounce of positivity. What are some things you like about the room?
- 1:00:30What do you think you can't what do you think you can do to
- 1:00:32make it better? Weeping? You can hear a woman crying, and here's
- 1:00:37the thing. And the husband like is seething with rage. He's like,
- 1:00:40I think at one point he just says, like, all I'm seeing is
- 1:00:44a lot of firewood right now? Yeah, yeah, yeah, Because I
- 1:00:47think they didn't she didn't want the fireplace to be if I remember correctly,
- 1:00:52she didn't want the fireplace to be covered up. That was actually an accent
- 1:00:55that she really liked, and it was the designer's job to really just kind
- 1:00:59of playoff of that instead of just covering up entirely. But let me go
- 1:01:05and say something here. As a producer, it's really fucking easy to go
- 1:01:09ahead and cut that that audio footage. It's really easy to go ahead and
- 1:01:15deliver where she's crying, Oh yeah, beflore. It goes on national television.
- 1:01:21You have to make an intentional decision to keep that in That I think
- 1:01:24was just part of TLC discovering its voice, which was the drama in the
- 1:01:31trauma and them really wanting to exploit people experiencing terrible moments. I've actually,
- 1:01:40I actually know people who have worked on reality TV productions and how oftentimes producers
- 1:01:47will instigate arguments, they will instigate problems, They will actually like kind of
- 1:01:54poke and prod at situations, knowing where all the weak points are, knowing
- 1:01:58where all the buttons are, to like ellicit responses from people that they've selected,
- 1:02:04knowing that they are very sensitive or will react or or are very emotional.
- 1:02:10And that's kind of the glory of reality TV. Sadler's it is so
- 1:02:20hard to watch that scene and not think that the show was immediately canceled after
- 1:02:27that because anything it was just amplified. It seems like any any sane people
- 1:02:34would go like, well, not only can we not air this episode because
- 1:02:38we are it culminates in a woman having a nervous breakdown and it being our
- 1:02:44fault. But it was weird too, because, like I think Trading Spaces
- 1:02:49tried to find really awkward moments because if you remember, during the commercial like
- 1:02:53they'd come back from commercial break, there'd be an interstitial or they'd leave commercial
- 1:02:59break to be like weird interstitials of like side things. Oh, here's Tie
- 1:03:02acting really weird and funny. And one one time I think it was Hildy
- 1:03:08just like putting her butt to the camera kind of just giving a butt wiggle.
- 1:03:13Yeah, it was weird. It was weird. So I remember distinctly
- 1:03:16with Doug Wilson watching this on television and I could not find I found a
- 1:03:23very loose reference to it. But there is a there's an episode, I
- 1:03:28think it's actually season four, episode one, where they are in I forget
- 1:03:34what town, they're Milwaukee, They're in Milwaukee, and it's two couples of
- 1:03:40single ladies. I think that was the magic of the episode, and the
- 1:03:45episode's description was like fighting and flirting and then that da da da da,
- 1:03:49and it ends with like, but we won't kiss and tell Doug Wilson at
- 1:03:55the end of an episode where he was like essentially working over the weekend with
- 1:04:00like two single ladies, just starts making out with one of the people,
- 1:04:06with one of the participants of the show. And it was the most And
- 1:04:10that was during the end credits, and it was one of the most awkward
- 1:04:13moments in television because here's this design show and you think it's about design.
- 1:04:18It's supposed to be about design, but really it's just trying to stir up
- 1:04:23all this drama. Was it like Price is right kissing or was it consensual?
- 1:04:29It was both of them in the heat of the moment and a very
- 1:04:32passionate, consensual kiss. Okay, yeah, all right, it's better,
- 1:04:39I guess. But during a design show was weird, still super weird to
- 1:04:44put on television. And during the end credits, was it like I feel
- 1:04:51like that's a thing that she might have been, Like I did not think
- 1:04:56you were gonna air that, Like, I mean, they signed those release
- 1:05:00forms and anything is game. The the end credits are very in the end
- 1:05:05credits of the like one that we just talked about in Harlem features like the
- 1:05:11carpenter, Amy Winn and Kai the designer talking about like where to get a
- 1:05:15good orthodontist, like because it because they're basically talking about like like like Kai
- 1:05:21is showing off her invisiline or whatever and Amy wins like those those are embraced.
- 1:05:26I want that, Like it's such a weird it's such a weird conversation,
- 1:05:30and and that's it. And then uh, Samuel L. Jackson comes
- 1:05:36up and draw and drafts ty Pennington into the carpenter's initiative, like, Yeah,
- 1:05:44it was such a it's such a weird choice. Let's let's go on
- 1:05:46to the Everett Washington episode. Like I said, now now we're going to
- 1:05:49the suburbs. I do I do want to commend you. This podcast is
- 1:05:55basically us finding way new ways to make ourselves angry using television, and I
- 1:06:01do want to commend you for finding the forty five minutes that have not only
- 1:06:08made me angrier than anything else on this podcast, but maybe the angriest I've
- 1:06:14been in my adult life. I did I know that this show could elicit
- 1:06:18such feeling I screamed at volumes while watching this episode of television. I didn't,
- 1:06:30I am. It is a miracle my neighbors did not call the police.
- 1:06:34Dan, Dan, do you want to take the lead and be podcast
- 1:06:39dad on this one or are you too emotionally? Are you too close to
- 1:06:44the source. I'll get as far as I can into it, and then
- 1:06:46one of you is gonna need to take the wheel. So this is in
- 1:06:50uh, this is in Washington. It is two neighbors. I'd say they're
- 1:06:56both like upper middle class white couples. Um like their suburban. One of
- 1:07:01them has a boat in their backyards. They owned land in a Seattle suburb
- 1:07:06in the early two thousands. They got money. Yes, so they're definitely
- 1:07:13like not as vulnerable as the harl Harlem couples. These they're just remodeling like
- 1:07:18a room in their house. They have two designers that are Hilde and what
- 1:07:23is the name of the Blonde? And both Hilde and Genevieve lose their fucking
- 1:07:30minds, and both of the couples, the blue shirts and the orange shirts
- 1:07:35are basically following the designers around going. I do not sign off on any
- 1:07:43of this. Not only first, they're trying to slow them down. They're
- 1:07:46like, this thing you're doing goes against the wishes of my neighbor and friend,
- 1:07:50and I am telling you, as someone that knows them and has spoken
- 1:07:55to them about what they want, that they will hate this. And then
- 1:07:59after that her feedback is basically them collecting evidence for small claims court because they're
- 1:08:05basically trying to get themselves like videotaped evidence of like I do not sign off
- 1:08:13on any of this because there and it gets to the point where Page shows
- 1:08:21up and yeah, Page of the host is like, hey, Genevieve,
- 1:08:27UM, I know my entire job is being perky and supportive, but are
- 1:08:31you sure you want to do this? And she was like, yeah,
- 1:08:34totally. Ill, we'll get into this thing. Jenevieve is like, I'm
- 1:08:40lying to one of these couples about what I'm doing, but it'll be fine,
- 1:08:44they'll like it in the end. And then she goes over like all
- 1:08:46right, cool, hilde why are you painting a fucking chair red with non
- 1:08:53fabric paint? And Hildie's like, I'm off my men. Yes, he
- 1:08:58is in some side room garage with a blue tarp up. The couple comes
- 1:09:02in, she is already halfway done spray painting with what appears to be an
- 1:09:10automotive us an airbray airbrush. Yes, because my dad had what we used
- 1:09:15to have, our family autobody shop, so I know what those things look
- 1:09:19like. And she's like, it's an el Camino exactly, bright red,
- 1:09:25like it's an El Camino, and she's without fabric paint, and all I
- 1:09:30could think to myself is like, it's gonna be crunchy. Specifically, asks
- 1:09:38is that fabric paint, and Hildy says no, it is not, and
- 1:09:41he goes, oh boy, but it's okay, it's okay. That doesn't
- 1:09:47ever come to fruition. Would you like to say, what would you?
- 1:09:51Disaster? Averted? So they put the couches outside in Seattle to dry,
- 1:10:00and yeah, dry in Seattle, okay, So I guess they cover it
- 1:10:04with blue tarps. It pours, it rains, it's windy, blue tarps
- 1:10:10blow away. They come back the next morning, these couches are destroyed.
- 1:10:15They're soaking wet, the paint has been is running off, and they've essentially
- 1:10:21destroyed three pieces of furniture in this family's living room. Now it's up to
- 1:10:29hilde to go out and replace this furniture. But Page keeps saying, you're
- 1:10:34going over budget, and I kept saying, and they kept reiterating, Oh,
- 1:10:39we're going over budget, you know, Oh, well, we'll let
- 1:10:41it slide this time that we're going over budget. No, you're not going
- 1:10:44over budget. You're replacing furniture that you damaged. Because that's the other part
- 1:10:48of the show is like these designers can use whatever they want. They go
- 1:10:53into people's basements, they go into other rooms, they start using elements in
- 1:10:57these people's houses. And in Hilde's case, she used their already existing furniture
- 1:11:02and tried to paint it with like house paint, car paint, with whatever,
- 1:11:08with not fabric paint this bright, ugly ass red. I'm gonna give
- 1:11:13you two references here, and you can choose which one you look you like
- 1:11:15better. I'm gonna do two takes, and it looks like the big comfy
- 1:11:20couch where Luna and Molly, a clown and her dolly hang out. It
- 1:11:27looks like the couch from Snick. Both of those are good. I like
- 1:11:32the Snick one, though I could jump over that and land on the crunchy
- 1:11:38seat, get paint all over my pants. It looks like Amanda Bindes should
- 1:11:43be telling me that all that is coming right back. So I want to
- 1:11:49run a theory by by you guys that my fiance pitched. She thinks,
- 1:11:56hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, sorry, sorry,
- 1:11:57one more. It looks like Steve should be sitting down in it and
- 1:12:00putting together blues clues. Okay, So my fiance pitched the theory that the
- 1:12:11couple in the rain deliberately took the tarp off to save to save the living
- 1:12:19room. They were like, we can't let them do this. This is
- 1:12:23gonna be a fucking disastrous So they took the tarp off so they would have
- 1:12:27to replace the chairs an entirely. Yeah, if that happened, then the
- 1:12:31producers did not do their job because that would have been aired. I think
- 1:12:40if they did do that, it is one of the most incredible acts of
- 1:12:43friendship on television. They snuck into their neighbor's lawn like cat burglars. They
- 1:12:50dressed up in black turtlenecks and I bad and beanies and slid their way and
- 1:12:57probably in a fucking Gillie suit and climb climb through the hedges and grabbed the
- 1:13:02tarps and ran off into the night. So in actuality, so it's like
- 1:13:09they the solution is that Hilde goes out buys new furniture. She buys these
- 1:13:15sleek look in early two thousands couches that are white, and she plays a
- 1:13:21joke on the husband and is like, Okay, here's the paint paint bucket,
- 1:13:25get paint and fill up the paint gun. And he's like, absolutely
- 1:13:29not and she's like, just kidding. Slip covers And honestly, that was
- 1:13:33the most probable solution to all of this the entire time, Like why not
- 1:13:39just reupholster or use slip covers on the original couches. It seems like it
- 1:13:45should be against the rules of the show, where when one of the families
- 1:13:50says, no, I do not sign off on this, and I think
- 1:13:54it's a bad idea, it seems like the designer should have to stop,
- 1:13:57Like it doesn't seem like that should be But that's the fun of TLC.
- 1:14:02This is tl This is where the learning channel turns into honey Boo boo TLC
- 1:14:09Toddler's and tiaras and all of that jazz. After a certain point, if
- 1:14:15I were in their shoes, I'd be like, why am I here.
- 1:14:17I'm just doing unpaid manual labor for you. I don't have any input the
- 1:14:23trading. The spaces are not being traded. I'm just basically decoration, while
- 1:14:28you brought in an interior designer. Meanwhile, speaking of paint, Meanwhile,
- 1:14:33Genevieve is in the other house, she paints an access wall with literal rust.
- 1:14:40Did you catch the throwaway line by Tie Paddington, who is fucking despising
- 1:14:46all of this, where they go like, oh, it's a it'll corrode
- 1:14:50and Tye Paddingon goes like it looks more like a commode to me, and
- 1:14:55it just walks out of them from walks away. Tie Paddington fucking kills it
- 1:14:59here. God damn it, God damn goddamn all of you. Because now
- 1:15:01I have to like take this side of thy Pennington. I have to like
- 1:15:05defend Pennington. But because Pennington is the only one of these people with a
- 1:15:13fucking marketable skill. Pennington is the only one of these people who can walk
- 1:15:16off of this show and do literally anything else because he seems me the only
- 1:15:20person with object permanence. He seems me the only person who understands like what
- 1:15:28happens when you nail things together. He seems to me the only one who
- 1:15:30can tell that a tall, skinny glass of water and a fat, short
- 1:15:35glass of water can hold the same amount. The rest of these people have
- 1:15:39to be influencers because they lack any other potential skill to be anything fucking else.
- 1:15:45Ty Pennington great in the Land of the Dumb, The man with one
- 1:15:49brain cell is king. He is also the only one talking to these families
- 1:15:56like they are human beings, Like he is like, Hey, what's going
- 1:16:00on. You're a human, You're you have an internal life, and I
- 1:16:02care about literally anything you have to say. And this is why his career
- 1:16:09explodes because he's apathetic because he can really relate. He moves on to doing
- 1:16:14most what was it Extreme Housemakeover and those like those makeovers. They're there for
- 1:16:19people that are struggling, there for people that do really great work in their
- 1:16:25communities, and they it's a it's a lot more of a like a heartwarming
- 1:16:30show and the designs are actually very good. Yeah, yeah, it's it's
- 1:16:34it's abc kind of kind of going to the like poverty porn, kind of
- 1:16:40like tragedy. I'm sorry, what's the phrase to keep using the drama and
- 1:16:44trauma. Oh yeah, drama ta yeah, it like it like pushes that.
- 1:16:47But because they're on ABC, and because it's Disney owned, and because
- 1:16:50they have to have a happy ending, they only get there like as a
- 1:16:55means to an end, because you know, at the end of it,
- 1:16:57it's gonna be tie Pennington, yell and move that truck and then there's gonna
- 1:17:01be the big crying and everyone's gonna you know, everywhere, and the community
- 1:17:06was involved and I'll you know, everybody that like they've touched their lives.
- 1:17:11Now it's time for them to you know, repay the favor. And yeah
- 1:17:15that's donating to St. Jude's Research Hospital and yeah, yeah, it's it's
- 1:17:19a lot more heartwarming. But Hildee is doing some kind of crazy thing and
- 1:17:27she brings tie Pennington into it where she's creating like a circus tent theme where
- 1:17:33she's draping fabric from the ceiling, hanging in on the walls and then covering
- 1:17:38the walls with fabric. But everything that they own, like all their entertainment
- 1:17:43center, they're like this and that all this because this is their enter like
- 1:17:45an entertainment space. That the thing that the one couple cups saying was like,
- 1:17:48oh, they host a lot of parties down here, so their sound
- 1:17:53system and things need to be on this wall. And she's like, well,
- 1:17:55I'm gonna put it on the opposite wall and whatever. But you ever
- 1:18:00walk into a room in your house and think, you know, this room
- 1:18:03just isn't flammable enough. Well, Hilde's got your back. This is a
- 1:18:11very combustible room. You know what I really want out of my home.
- 1:18:15You know when you're in a tent and you have the sense that it could
- 1:18:18fall down at any moment. Oh, yeah, that's what I really want
- 1:18:21in my relaxation space. But I remember that Ty builds the I guess the
- 1:18:29loop or the thing that was going to hold all the fabric in the top
- 1:18:31of the tent together. Literally just a cylinder. It's a cylinder. Think
- 1:18:36think about a spool of thread. Now put that move that to like the
- 1:18:40size of a football. That's all he's building. Yeah, and then what
- 1:18:43was it? Hildee has the nerve to say, actually, can you like
- 1:18:46make this half of the size? Like cut it in half? And he
- 1:18:49now has to do a lot more work. He just built this thing for
- 1:18:54her and she couldn't even come to the project with the proper measurements. But
- 1:18:58he is like seething with rage when she asks that, He's like sure,
- 1:19:01it will take time and effort, and she's like great, thank you,
- 1:19:05and then fucks off. And then Genevieve on the other side and the other
- 1:19:11house. Genevieve has a dig so passive aggressive that she loves so much.
- 1:19:16She does it twice, first to Page and then to Tie, where she
- 1:19:20says like basically kind of says, uh, yeah, we'll do this within
- 1:19:25two days and the and the and under budget. You know how this show
- 1:19:29works, you know the show that we're on the rules We want to check
- 1:19:31the rule book. She does that first to Page and then later to Tie
- 1:19:36when he says something like okay, do you think we're gonna get this in
- 1:19:41time? And she says, yeah, that's how the show works that we're
- 1:19:44on. And Tie just sits there just like b yeah. He oh my
- 1:19:50god, openly hates her, like openly openly despises her and like does not
- 1:19:59hide it. I know, he like is just talking shit and he like
- 1:20:02walks through like the room she's ninely like looks like ass. Anyway, here's
- 1:20:06some wooden bullshit you wanted later, Like he's building a shelf and the husband
- 1:20:13is like, I don't think this looks very good, and he's like it's
- 1:20:15stupid. This is this, but this like that's what he is signed on
- 1:20:19to do. He's just doing his job. He's there to again build out
- 1:20:25Genevieve and Hilde's visions, which Genevieve's vision is the Asian inspired room that the
- 1:20:31one woman specifically does not want. And I was so like excited that this
- 1:20:36was the episode that you sent over because this is also in that top ten
- 1:20:41list of worst rooms and worst moments, because this couple visibly hates it.
- 1:20:48The whole whole cast, the whole cast and set up really feels like if
- 1:20:55you hired a failing polycuel to do your kids. I'm sure everyone there has
- 1:21:03slept with each other, Like maybe that's where all the frustration intention comes from.
- 1:21:09They all seem like each other's exes. They all seem like that that's
- 1:21:14what they that's what they like duging. Like all right, So the thing
- 1:21:17that really pops is when a bunch of people have had sex and hate each
- 1:21:20other. What can we replicate that in a more pure distilled form channel.
- 1:21:29You got Doug over there, his tongue is halfway down a participant's throat,
- 1:21:33and he just kind of like like takes his tongue out for a second,
- 1:21:36yells back, you can't shop where you're eat, and then goes back to
- 1:21:39making to make it out with this contestant who he's never gonna see again.
- 1:21:45Oh god, there was there was definitely a thing of like, oh my
- 1:21:48god, I can't believe I slept with Doug. I told myself this wasn't
- 1:21:53going to happen. Apparently, so kissing Doug not to be also confused used
- 1:22:00with when they brought the show back on the season premiere. Apparently Page kisses
- 1:22:05Doug and then people were like, that was awkward and doesn't feel comfortable.
- 1:22:12But I think that was that was a kiss that was like initiated by Page,
- 1:22:15and Doug didn't seem like he was that into it. So let's let's
- 1:22:20talk about the act of violence that Genevieve does, the war crime that she
- 1:22:28commits, her nice little violation of the Geneva Convention. So they they mentioned
- 1:22:36the no Asian thing twice where they're doing an interview and they're like, so
- 1:22:43we don't want any colors that are too bright. We don't want an Asian
- 1:22:46theme. U. It's in a list of like two other themes. So
- 1:22:50it's not like she like goes like no Asian, by the way, it's
- 1:22:54like she's yeah, I think this is also during a time when Zen was
- 1:22:59kind of getting pretty hot in there, so it was like minimalist but maybe
- 1:23:03put some like bamboo in a vase like that. And Dragon was the most
- 1:23:10popular movie in America. Yeah, it's it's like around this time. Yeah,
- 1:23:15So she calls that out and then they're um talking to the the other
- 1:23:24team is talking to Genevieve and they're like, um, so here's some of
- 1:23:28the stuff she gave us feedback on. Um, there is one thing she
- 1:23:31doesn't want. She doesn't want an Asian theme. And Genevieve was like,
- 1:23:36so I got bad news. Yeah, She's like, I did an eight
- 1:23:42I planned an Asian theme. And she goes like, all right, well,
- 1:23:45I cannot emphasize this enough. She told me explicitly she would hate an
- 1:23:49Asian theme. And then Genevieve goes like, okay, actually, never mind,
- 1:23:54it's not an Asian theme. We won't do an Asian theme. That
- 1:23:57would be stupid. Cut to her in the garage talking to Page being like,
- 1:24:00so it's an Asian theme, but don't tell them because they're gonna love
- 1:24:04it. And then Page it's like, so you're lying to the family and
- 1:24:08she's like, yes, absolutely, I'm gonna make it. Yeah, and
- 1:24:17you are now complicit in it. Page, you have to go with it,
- 1:24:23but don't say anything. We're in this together, Page. We both
- 1:24:29go down if I get called in. In addition to that, they like
- 1:24:31she paints the wall bright orange, yeah, which, and one of the
- 1:24:38things is um, they specifically say, we don't want any colors that are
- 1:24:43too dark or too bright. And then the first time the husband spins around
- 1:24:46to look at it, he goes, that's but pause right, and you
- 1:24:51think. I think what it was happening is he was about to say that's
- 1:24:55beautiful, looked at it, realized it was ugly as sin, and was
- 1:24:59like, well, it's bright the thing I didn't want it to be.
- 1:25:04So yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna, I'm gonna pitch an idea here by
- 1:25:10you guys. I think that at some point in time in Page's life.
- 1:25:14I think at some point in time in Page Davis's life. She found a
- 1:25:18bottle in the back of an old store, rubbed it and was given a
- 1:25:23wish by a genie, and she wished that she would be famous and on
- 1:25:28TV shows or on TV sets all across America. And this is what happened
- 1:25:32because she's in hell, so it was a monkey's paw. Like she she's
- 1:25:38the most well known commodity there, but she's surrounded by assholes and she can
- 1:25:45do nothing. All that she can do is try to play Kate. You
- 1:25:47can watch her. She's not a carpenter. The carpenters get to say,
- 1:25:50no, she's booboo shell. She can do is sit there and go.
- 1:25:54I don't know if this is a good idea, Yogi, can you can
- 1:25:59arrange couple isn't gonna like this? I feel like you can. You can
- 1:26:02provide some contexts on because I feel like from watching this that this is like
- 1:26:05one of the only times that page is broken kfob where she like broke her
- 1:26:11like rule of being only positive to go like, yeah, it was this
- 1:26:16like an isolated incident. Uh, It's hard for me to tell because there
- 1:26:23were I feel like they were more moments where she was trying to advocate for
- 1:26:27the families and just being like, I don't think they they didn't request this
- 1:26:32that were or specifically, oh, they didn't want dark colors. They wanted
- 1:26:35you to brighten the room, not you know, make it dark or uh,
- 1:26:41you know, they wanted to protect this area. Because I think she
- 1:26:44gets like, there is paperwork that these contestants have to fill out beforehand,
- 1:26:48and they do get a clause where they get to say like, this is
- 1:26:53a boundary, this is like a no no zone, but it's very obvious
- 1:26:57that that doesn't matter. And in fact, I wonder if the producers behind
- 1:27:00the scenes looked at that and said, oh, you don't want to have
- 1:27:05an Asian themed room, We're gonna tell Genevieve to you know, strike up
- 1:27:12a design for you studio. You get a little look at that this time,
- 1:27:19because when Hilde destroys the couches, page goes, okay, well we
- 1:27:26can't let these people have no furniture. So yeah, she looks really frustrated,
- 1:27:30but Paige says, I guess I'm gonna let you break the rules this
- 1:27:35one time and go buy new furniture, which I responded, like, is
- 1:27:40Paige a producer? I don't think she gets to make that call. I
- 1:27:44don't know. You know, I'm gonna look a little bit into that because
- 1:27:47people made it. See the way that they talk to Paige almost does sound
- 1:27:53like she has some type of producer role, which would make sense since she's
- 1:27:57kind of the host and kind and it has to rain people in, and
- 1:28:01she's also enforcing the rules of the game, like how she was pulling Key
- 1:28:08out of the room saying time is up. You have to get out,
- 1:28:10go now, like so she is kind of wrangling them in. But it
- 1:28:14was crazy because Hildie at the end, at the end, she always asked
- 1:28:18the designers where they came in with their budget, and it's you know,
- 1:28:21oh, I made it to nine eighty seven, so I have enough money
- 1:28:25to take you out to dinner, like little jokes like that. But Hildee's
- 1:28:30budget, so Paige gives her an extra five hundred. Hildee spent one thousand,
- 1:28:38five hundred and sixty two, so even if she didn't get the extra
- 1:28:42five hundred, she still went over budget, which was mind blowing. I
- 1:28:47don't think Paige can be a producer because she gets fired. Oh that is
- 1:28:53well, I mean, producer's gonna get fired too, but yeah, get
- 1:28:56fired. They do let her go. I forget what sees and it was
- 1:29:00And people say that this is like the downturn of trading spaces because they wanted
- 1:29:04the focus to be on the designers and the contestants on the show. They
- 1:29:11I don't know if no one cares about the contestants. Yeah, Like Paige
- 1:29:15was there to kind of keep pace. She was there to ask questions about
- 1:29:20inspiration, about solutions when there were problems, Like she was kind of a
- 1:29:27facilitator and also again an enforcer of the rules. But I think that people
- 1:29:31like don't realize that the role of a host is almost like being a proxy
- 1:29:36for the viewer, that like, the viewer sees themselves in the host.
- 1:29:41If the host is super relatable, then you can kind of be like,
- 1:29:44oh, I feel like I am in the situation and she's asking questions and
- 1:29:47clarifying things that I would be asking these designers, and that was what her
- 1:29:51role was. So to remove her from the equation just made the show kind
- 1:29:58of flat. In your Emmy Award winning opinion, is Page a good host.
- 1:30:02She is given the time in which this is happening in the early two
- 1:30:09thousands with the world that that was. I'm not going to grade her on
- 1:30:13the morals and the standards of today. She is an exceptional host. She
- 1:30:20feels despondent when the contestants don't like their rooms, but she continues the conversation
- 1:30:29by asking them questions of Okay, what is it that you do like about
- 1:30:32the room? What are the redeeming factors of the room. What are some
- 1:30:34things that you could do to bring this room up to the standard that you
- 1:30:39want? What are some other ideas? You know, So when someone doesn't
- 1:30:43like a room, she's really good at facilitating and keeping the conversations. She's
- 1:30:46good at diffusing conflicts between designers and ty Pennington because Ti, there are some
- 1:30:54parts I you know, it's all flooding back to me. There are times
- 1:30:57when he blows up. He has I remember being a little bit mildly afraid
- 1:31:03of Tie because he had some like anger on that show. And he's the
- 1:31:10guy they build a whole like empire from house. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 1:31:14yeah, Well because he's maybe because he's extremely like task oriented, which he's
- 1:31:19the reason that he would blow up is because of designers like bad expectations and
- 1:31:25poor time management. And he's actually really like diligent, and he actually does
- 1:31:30want to do a good job, and he actually is really passionate about his
- 1:31:33job. So that's the reasons he kind of blows up sometimes. So he's
- 1:31:39just angry at other people's incompetence to be honest. But yeah, like Paige
- 1:31:43is a very good host. She's bubbly, she's fun, she's excited.
- 1:31:46She makes a lot of jokes. In the Everett episode, the Everett Washington
- 1:31:50episode, each of the contestants have to sw there swapping keys and swapping coffee
- 1:31:57makers, and she makes a really good joke about that. So she is
- 1:32:00she is an exceptional host. And this is stuff. I'm appreciating this look
- 1:32:05behind the curtain because this is stuff that you do. I've seen you do
- 1:32:10it on Check Please. I've seen episodes where like somebody doesn't like another person's
- 1:32:16restaurant recommendation and you have to kind of step in and facilitate that discussion.
- 1:32:21I've seen you do this, and now I get to see a little look
- 1:32:25behind the curtains. It's all about striking a balance. It's fine to have
- 1:32:30criticisms, and I think it's healthy for people to kind of come in and
- 1:32:33say you know, I didn't like this about this restaurant, but it's my
- 1:32:38job to go beyond why I didn't like it. Okay, well what was
- 1:32:42it that you didn't like? And how can they improve that thing? And
- 1:32:45I think that is a critical thing, and so I think that's what Page
- 1:32:50does. She isn't just like, oh, you don't like it, okay,
- 1:32:55sorry to hear that. No, She kind of digs in and is
- 1:32:58like, what can be a redeemed factor? And then how can you improve
- 1:33:02upon this? And I think that's I think that's key. I feel like
- 1:33:08there's a line between Trading Spaces, the show that is like constructive and about
- 1:33:14creating something and about learning stuff, and then there's Trading Spaces, the sloppy
- 1:33:18reality show about human carnage, and Paige doing her job. Is that line
- 1:33:26where she is constantly like, through force of will, pushing it towards like
- 1:33:30the best version of itself. That's why they fired her. That because she's
- 1:33:34so sweet, and because she's so kind and she's so earnest and honest and
- 1:33:39bubbly. You can feel the discomfort with her. She's so comforting in discomfort
- 1:33:47and that is kind of yeah, she and she confronts it too, like
- 1:33:54she'll just say what's on her mind. If if she doesn't like something,
- 1:33:57she'll be like, oh, it's not my company, but maybe someone else
- 1:34:00will like it. But at the end, honestly, at the end of
- 1:34:02them, the Genevieve and Hilde designs that rust colored wall, I kind of
- 1:34:10felt like she was pandering to Genevieve. She's like, I'm gonna paint my
- 1:34:14wall with rust, and I doubt that she did, because that was terrible
- 1:34:18and I feel like that was as much for the contestants benefit as Genevieve's.
- 1:34:23Yeah no, it's a good idea. You shouldn't like burn this house down.
- 1:34:28And Genevieve's response to that is when Paige says I might paint my wall
- 1:34:33like that, Genevieve says, I think a lot of people will be doing
- 1:34:36that zoon, Oh yeah, probably. Oh I'm a trendsetter. A lot
- 1:34:40of people are going to be painting their walls with the rust spoiler alert,
- 1:34:44they didn't. I don't think from watching this, Genevieve has been told no
- 1:34:48a lot in her life. Yeah, I don't think. I don't think
- 1:34:53the idea of negative reinforcement has has been a factor for Genevieve. Genevieve is
- 1:35:00a fucking monster. She is so mean to everybody. She bulldozes over like
- 1:35:06the feedback of her of her family, like so viciously and cruelly, to
- 1:35:15the point where a Page and Tie Paddington Chi Pennington are basically like almost acting
- 1:35:21as their union reps, where they're like being like, so, we've been
- 1:35:26talking to the families and they have some concerns that they would like to negotiate
- 1:35:30with you. And Jenney was like, fuck off, yeah, held that
- 1:35:34I'm hostage. Yeah, she was like, I'm building lanterns. Who gives
- 1:35:40a shit what anybody has to say. I want to go back to Hilde
- 1:35:43real quick, because I want to talk about just a quick theme here.
- 1:35:46Hildee is unable to predict that it might reign in Seattle. Hildee is also
- 1:35:51the mastermind that brought us the hay Room. And the more I think about
- 1:35:56the hay Room, the more questions I have because quit literally she basically just
- 1:36:00puts up rubber cement and throws straw and hay around there, does not put
- 1:36:06a covering on it. Let's let's just go ahead and say even for a
- 1:36:11moment that aesthetically that's a good look. Maybe you are a weird kind of
- 1:36:14ranch hand or whatever. Hey rots h, she didn't she seal it at
- 1:36:21all. Yeah, she didn't seal it. If if she, if she
- 1:36:24had put like a preserve like a like a like a lacquer over, it
- 1:36:28would have been fine because it's preserved there and you can't smell, it's not
- 1:36:31putting anything off. It would have been over budget. Yeah, So she
- 1:36:35just put put hey there, and hey, hey, rots hey, it's
- 1:36:40it's it's a plant. It breaks down eventually, he's just gonna have gross
- 1:36:45rotting plant matter in your house. And not only that, they were able
- 1:36:48to pluck it off the walls. Yeah, Like it was like there were
- 1:36:53strands that were just kind of hanging out. Like So this kind of this
- 1:37:00is I don't know a better way to say this. Is she really that
- 1:37:03stupid? I don't think she's really that stupid. I think I think that's
- 1:37:09producer pushed stupidity. Kaylina, you go first, because I have a take.
- 1:37:15I think she fancies herself a designer, but her ideas are out of
- 1:37:20this world, and the producers just gas her up knowing she's gonna come up
- 1:37:27with something insane because people later in later seasons, no, they almost cringe.
- 1:37:31They go, oh, it's Hildy, Like they almost like anticipate that
- 1:37:36when they are paired up with her that it's gonna be a nightmare. Oh
- 1:37:42god, yeah, you think people like who watch the show see that they
- 1:37:45got Hildy and try to get out of their contracts where they're like, actually,
- 1:37:49there's no parking on my block. Suddenly, Oh my neighbors have been
- 1:37:56throwing a lot of fourteen car house parties lately. Guess no hill. Um.
- 1:38:03So I I came away from watching this with sort of um feeling very
- 1:38:11much that this was kind of like a class thing, Like I don't want
- 1:38:14to say necessarily the Hildy and Genevieve or rich, but I don't think however,
- 1:38:18are yes. Um, it didn't feel like it was going to be
- 1:38:23much of a stretch. And I'm definitely not going to say that the Washington
- 1:38:26couples are downtrodden in any way. They're fucking They're both clearly like doing pretty
- 1:38:31well, but also like they are homeowners. Uh there's a good chance that
- 1:38:36their house rich. Um. The people in Harlem definitely were like kind of
- 1:38:42living and dying by those apartments, And there's like an element of um in
- 1:38:46Hilde and Genevieve and to a lesser extent the other designers, of being able
- 1:38:51to do whatever the fuck you want to a room because you can afford to
- 1:38:56change it later or you you can undo it. You can change the way
- 1:39:00your room looks every taking a gamble, yeah, you can do basically a
- 1:39:06fun arts and crafts with one of your room because there's no sense of permanency
- 1:39:12to it. So I think when Hilde was putting the hay on the walls,
- 1:39:15she was not thinking about the longevity of that, because she was like,
- 1:39:17well, you know, you put hay on your walls and then you
- 1:39:19have your guy come and take it down in six months when you get bored
- 1:39:23with it, and then you go with like a French motif, not taking
- 1:39:28into the effect that these are like renters and homeowners that actually have to live
- 1:39:31their lives in the decisions that you make. So I think there is sort
- 1:39:36of like an element of class to it where it's just like, again,
- 1:39:43I don't feel it quite as much with the Harlem episodes, but I definitely
- 1:39:46felt like these super rich elites just coming into people's lives and fucking everything up
- 1:39:53and being like, well, just use your vast wealth to fix it.
- 1:39:57After I'm gone, goodbye, You're welcome. Yeah, absolutely, Like yeah,
- 1:40:01that really was. It was like spinning a wheel and just accepting whatever
- 1:40:06it landed on. And I don't know if people knew, because I feel
- 1:40:13like there were a lot of times people did like the designs, Like there
- 1:40:17were some episodes where like, for instance, the people who got the fabric
- 1:40:23drapes all over their tent walls, they seem to actually like it. They
- 1:40:28I guess they liked the novelty of it. They said that their kids would
- 1:40:30really love it, that it was really playful and they had a good time.
- 1:40:34They liked the sconces coming out of the walls. So I think like
- 1:40:39some people just maybe aren't the most does They're not good designers themselves, but
- 1:40:45they are eccentric and they wanted to have really playful, whimsical rooms. There's
- 1:40:51also a there is a reality with housing prices of houses that were featured on
- 1:41:01DIY like shows, like television shows like so there is a factor of like,
- 1:41:06hey, one of these rooms is featured on trading spaces one of these
- 1:41:11rooms is part of like an extreme home makeover that like actually increases a house
- 1:41:17sale. Oh my god. People like the novelty of it. You could
- 1:41:23have an entire flipping strategy of I'm going to get on this show. I'm
- 1:41:26gonna let Hildie just like finger paint all over the walls, and then I'm
- 1:41:32as soon as it airs, I'm gonna sell it. This house has a
- 1:41:36mural of Hilde's face on it. Yeah, there is kind of a market
- 1:41:41for that, you know now that I remember when I was probably thirteen or
- 1:41:46fourteen would have been about the height of this, there was a house in
- 1:41:54my town that was being featured on HDTV. It was being featured in an
- 1:41:58in a remodel show, and it was already a pretty like for the area
- 1:42:01expensive house. And I remember like watching the episode when it came on TV,
- 1:42:09and I remember all of the like painstaking shots that they like basically bent
- 1:42:13over backwards to show you to make sure you didn't know that right across the
- 1:42:17street from that house is a chevron in a chicken shack, and that it
- 1:42:23is in a town of one hundred and fifty people, basically like and yeah,
- 1:42:29now that I think about it. That house was for sale within a
- 1:42:31year for probably way higher than they bought it for. Ye all right,
- 1:42:40so now looking back on it now, thinking about like your time with your
- 1:42:45with your mom and it's your family watching Trading Spaces. Is this a show
- 1:42:51that you and your mom would watch again this weekend? You you think you
- 1:42:57would be the same, like that we would be the same, or how
- 1:43:02do you think you would respond to it? Now? I feel like you're
- 1:43:04going to do this, like now that you know that I have you and
- 1:43:09Bunny are gonna go and now that I have some episodes on deck because she
- 1:43:14really actually does like interior design. She has now the home is beautifully furnished.
- 1:43:20Um, it's gone through like two different redecorations. During the time that
- 1:43:25the show was airing, my parents sent me away to sleep away camp in
- 1:43:30I think it was like two thousand and two and two thousand and two and
- 1:43:32two thousand and three, and I think in two thousand and two we played
- 1:43:35Trading Spaces because I left for camp for two weeks and then when I came
- 1:43:40back, my bedroom was fully redesigned and they did the whole like reveal and
- 1:43:44I absolutely loved it. My mom had hand painted butterflies up on like the
- 1:43:49top of my um, you know, on the top of my walls where
- 1:43:54it kind of met the ceiling, and it was just like a beautiful and
- 1:43:57cozy like preteen bed room space. But now, yeah, she she designed
- 1:44:02her has redesigned her home. She designed her beautiful bakery. And she kind
- 1:44:08of loves that, kind of like she loves HDT and all those like Fix
- 1:44:13her Upper shows and whatnot. Um, And I think trading spaces is just
- 1:44:18funny and hilarious and to see where home design can go array really quickly.
- 1:44:25Um, it just sounds like a good time. I would definitely watch this
- 1:44:27with my mom now now and you now you can drink wine with your mom
- 1:44:31and watch except she's like allergic to wine, so she'll drink bails whatever the
- 1:44:39specific alcohol was at the point of that statement. And you know it,
- 1:44:43You have the coolest mom, Miss Bunny. Yes, Kaylatie, is there
- 1:44:49anywhere else anything else? If you forgot to plug of your myriad projects?
- 1:44:55Where's your where's your mom's bakery? Where can I go? Different? In
- 1:45:00New Jersey? And she kind of does these like you know, painting with
- 1:45:02a twist. She kind of does that with cookies. So she has these
- 1:45:06cookie decorating classes that you can sign up. You get the cookies and she
- 1:45:11teaches you how to decorate them because she's just a gorgeous decorator. But she
- 1:45:15is sitting Yeah, I think, hold on, let me drop the address
- 1:45:21your moms. I don't care about you anymore. Plug your mom. Bunny
- 1:45:25cakes on Instagram is she has bunny cakes and cookies one really long Instagram handle,
- 1:45:32but she has way more followers than I do. I was going to
- 1:45:39I was going to give you this invite, but I was gonna say,
- 1:45:41do you want to come back on? You mentioned before that your backup show
- 1:45:45was dragon ball Z, So I was going to ask if you wanted to
- 1:45:46come back on to talk about dragon ball Z. But in Sam gonna say,
- 1:45:50do your mom want to come on to talk about dragon ball Z?
- 1:45:54I can ask. She'd probably be down, all right. Think for being
- 1:45:59on this show, Thank you so much for having me. This was really
- 1:46:01fun. Normally this is the part where I plug all of our social stuff,
- 1:46:05but man, I don't even know where that stuff exists anymore. On
- 1:46:10Twitter, on Hive, yeah, I did, I did like post the
- 1:46:15or I did park the Schneid remarks name on hive, but man, Hive
- 1:46:18is terror. I've sucks. They're all bad. We're not going to I
- 1:46:24signed up for so many alternatives and I'm just like tired. I'm like,
- 1:46:29I'm still I signed up for co host a week and a half ago and
- 1:46:31they still won't let me post. Oh it did. It took me about
- 1:46:34two weeks before they were like, okay, you're ready, and I thought
- 1:46:38I was like, oh, you said twenty four hours. Like I just
- 1:46:41kind of like signed up and waited. Co host actually does interest me,
- 1:46:45so I'm like, I want to explore it. I'm not going to be
- 1:46:48able to build a brand on any of these the way that I was able
- 1:46:51to build a brand on Twitter, because it's not twenty and twelve and I'm
- 1:46:55not unemployed and horribly depressed anymore. Yeah, having a job in a relationship
- 1:47:00really cut into my posting time. Anyway. Point is Breaking Mayberry at gmail
