Latest / CCC West Covina / Great Friday 2026: It is Finished
Transcript
- 0:00It is so good to have you with us tonight on this great Friday.
- 0:05This is the greatest of all, all days.
- 0:08It's the highest of all the the holy days.
- 0:11It is the the apex of redemptive history.
- 0:15Everything from Genesis 1 pointed to this day, the day in
- 0:20which our our Lord was was crucified on on Calvary's tree.
- 0:26But The funny thing about Resurrection Sunday and Great
- 0:29Friday is that it's only a weekend in our celebration.
- 0:35Christmas is a season. It begins basically in October,
- 0:39goes all the way through November into December, and we
- 0:43have parties and get togethers and gatherings and exchanging of
- 0:47gifts and all kinds of celebrations.
- 0:51And yet the highest of all holy days just gets a day.
- 0:57In fact, most churches don't even have a great Friday
- 1:01service. And yet it's the best of all the
- 1:06days. In fact, I've always thought
- 1:09about the fact that during Passion Week we should probably
- 1:12get together as a church every day of the week.
- 1:15We, we should meet on Sunday because that was the day of, of
- 1:19his reception in Bethany with Mary and Martha and Lazarus and
- 1:23they had dinner at the home of Simon the leper.
- 1:27And then we, we would come back from Sunday and gather together
- 1:29on Monday, because Monday was the day of his coronation.
- 1:33It was a day in which he wrote into Jerusalem on that palm
- 1:36Monday in which the the the cries of the people that blessed
- 1:40is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 1:43And then we get back together on Tuesday, because Tuesday was the
- 1:46day of indignation, the day in which he went in and cleansed
- 1:49the temple and and cursed the fig tree.
- 1:52And then we gathered back again on on Wednesday, because
- 1:55Wednesday was the day of instruction, instruction around
- 1:58the the the Temple Mount as he would answer and questions and
- 2:03even ask questions and instruct about his coming Kingdom.
- 2:06And then his instruction on the Mount of Olives, of course that
- 2:09late afternoon into the early evening with his men.
- 2:13And then we could gather again on Thursday, because that was
- 2:15the day of his affection for his men, which he would wash the
- 2:19disciples feet. He'd partake at the Lord's
- 2:21table, he'd give us High priestly prayer, and he'd give
- 2:25them great comfort and encouragement about his coming
- 2:29again. And then of course, we'd we'd
- 2:32gather together on on Thursday, because Thursday was the day of
- 2:39his incarceration in which they would gather him together and
- 2:43begin to, to interrogate him. And then we gathered together on
- 2:49Friday, which Friday was the day of his crucifixion.
- 2:53And then on Saturday was the day of his proclamation.
- 2:56First Peter, 3/19, he went to the lower parts of the earth and
- 2:59made a proclamation. They gained victory over sin,
- 3:03death and Satan. And then we gathered him back on
- 3:06Sunday, which is the day of, of resurrection.
- 3:10We should celebrate the the resurrection of Jesus Christ our
- 3:12Lord. And that would just be a week,
- 3:14but we could gather together just for that week.
- 3:16I remember when we went to the study of Luke, we spent five
- 3:19months on five days of Passion week just to cover all the
- 3:25details that that were there because there's so much to
- 3:28cover. And of course, most of John's
- 3:33gospel is about the last hours of our Lord's Lord's life.
- 3:40And yet today in modern day Christianity, we spend very
- 3:44little time ever contemplating the cross, ever celebrating the
- 3:50cross, ever considering the cross of Jesus Christ our Lord.
- 4:00And yet there are there are people who who will wear
- 4:03crosses. Maybe you have one on this
- 4:05evening. We've come to a place in in life
- 4:09where we've learned to venerate the cross.
- 4:12It's become a piece of exquisite jewelry that we wear.
- 4:18We wear it around our neck. We we put it on our lapel.
- 4:21We we have pictures of the cross in our homes.
- 4:25Some of them are are 14 karat gold, some of them are sterling
- 4:28silver. Some of them have diamonds on
- 4:30them, some of them have rubies on them.
- 4:32And we wear them to, to dress up our outfits because it is so
- 4:35becoming to those who see it. But just think about that for a
- 4:41moment. For those of us who who wear
- 4:45crosses and and put them on display, just think if you are a
- 4:501st century Christian, I wonder what you would do.
- 4:56You certainly wouldn't be wearing AA14 karat gold cross
- 5:00around your neck. I mean, it would be like the 1st
- 5:04century Christian taking a image of a noose and making it into 14
- 5:15karat gold and putting it on their lapel or around their
- 5:20neck. We would ask the question, what
- 5:23are you doing? Or they would take the image of
- 5:27an electric chair or even a gas chamber and they would decorate
- 5:33it with rubies and all kinds of paraphernalia and maybe put it
- 5:37on their lapel or around their neck.
- 5:40We'd ask the question, what on earth were you thinking?
- 5:45Or if they were to take a a syringe and a needle and outline
- 5:49it with diamonds and and wear it around their neck, we'd ask the
- 5:53question, why would you wear something so cruel and brutal to
- 6:00symbolize a lethal injection around your neck?
- 6:06Makes you think of things a little differently, doesn't it?
- 6:10You see, we look at the cross and the 1st century Christian
- 6:13would say this is a symbol of brutality, a symbol of cruelty.
- 6:20No 1st century Christian would would be wearing a cross around
- 6:24their neck because of the the horrendous death in which it it
- 6:30causes. And even though the Persians
- 6:34were the ones who, who began crucifixions in 500 BC and then
- 6:39it moved to the Egyptians and then it moved to Rome.
- 6:42And in 63 BC, the Romes perfected the crucifixion.
- 6:48And even though they're they had gone through all these
- 6:50crucifixions and, and during the time of Christ, there were some
- 6:5430,000 crucifixions during his time on the earth.
- 7:01The only thing about that is that is that it it wasn't until
- 7:04500 BC that crucifixions were even thought of or first
- 7:09recorded, except in the book of Zechariah, wherein 550 BC, 50
- 7:17years before the Persians ever initiated crucifixions,
- 7:23Zechariah would prophecy about the Messiah being crucified.
- 7:30But in 700 BC, 200 years before the Persians ever thought of
- 7:37crucifixions, the prophet Isaiah would prophecy about the
- 7:44crucifixion of the Messiah. Better yet, in 1000 BC, 500
- 7:52years before the Persians ever enacted crucifixions, it would
- 7:59be David who would prophecy about the crucifixion of the
- 8:02Messiah. Because that was the plan.
- 8:07It was always the plan. And even though the world
- 8:11finally caught up to where the Bible really is, that's the way
- 8:16it always is, the Bible. I mean, the world has to catch
- 8:19up to where the Bible is. The Bible is not catching up to
- 8:22where the world is. The world has to catch up to
- 8:24where the Bible is. It was our Our Lord who had made
- 8:31sure that the prophecy of the cross was well written in the
- 8:37Scriptures and yet it was such a devastating way to die.
- 8:44It was William Barkley who called the crucifixion A
- 8:50dreadful routine. A man by the name of Clawson, a
- 8:56Jewish historian, says that crucifixion is the most terrible
- 9:00and cruel death man has ever devised.
- 9:03Cicero, who was well acquainted with it, says it was the most
- 9:08cruel and shameful of all punishments.
- 9:12And William Wilson, in his Judicial, Literary and
- 9:16Historical Investigation of the Cross of Christ, writes these
- 9:21words. Not only was the cross the most
- 9:24painful of deaths, it was also considered the most amazing.
- 9:30The condemned man was stripped naked and left exposed in his
- 9:33agony. And often the Romans even denied
- 9:37burial to the victim, allowing his body to hang on the cross
- 9:43until it disintegrated. We forget about the the cruelty
- 9:48of the cross. And yet when you read the Bible,
- 9:54it simply says, and there he was crucified.
- 10:00It doesn't give you any details. Oh, we have movies that that
- 10:04give you details, but the Bible doesn't give you any details.
- 10:08It doesn't have to because everybody knew about
- 10:11crucifixions. Everybody knew the details to
- 10:15the crucifixions. So the Bible just simply says,
- 10:21and there he was, was crucified. And yet our Lord would hang on a
- 10:28cross for for six hours, six hours, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
- 10:38And during those six hours He would utter 7 sayings.
- 10:45The first was a word of pardon, he would say, Father, forgive
- 10:52them, for they know not what they are doing.
- 10:58The second word was was the word of promise that he gave to the
- 11:04thief on the cross. Today you shall be with me in
- 11:09Paradise. The third word was the word of
- 11:16provision. When he looked to his mother, he
- 11:20said Behold your son and then to John and said Behold your
- 11:29mother. That was all during the first 3
- 11:32hours in which it was as bright as day until noon, when all of a
- 11:41sudden the sky became darkened. And toward the end of those last
- 11:48three hours he would utter four more sayings.
- 11:54The 4th or the 5th 1 would be or the 4th 1 would be.
- 11:56A word of pain. My God, my God, why hast thou
- 12:00forsaken me? From there there was a word of
- 12:05petition. That petition was I thirst.
- 12:11Then came the word of purpose. It is finished.
- 12:17And then the word of peace. Father, into thy hands I commend
- 12:23my spirit. The fact that He even said one
- 12:29word was remarkable. The fact that he said 7 * 7
- 12:34different sayings is remarkable considering the the pain that he
- 12:40was in. And yet our our Lord was in
- 12:44complete control of everything. It's remarkable to, to
- 12:49understand the, the, the sovereign power of the, of the
- 12:52Lord Jesus Christ. And tonight I, I just want to
- 12:57mention one of those phrases to you tonight.
- 13:02We'll call it the word of purpose.
- 13:05And that is one word to Telestai.
- 13:09It is finished and that word tells us many, many things.
- 13:16But I'm just going to give you 4 very simple principles that that
- 13:22word explains to us. The first one is, is this that
- 13:29that word to tell us thy or it is finish, delivers for us the
- 13:38consummation of His mission. That word alone delivers for us
- 13:43the consummation, the completion of His mission.
- 13:48It is finished. A remarkable statement, our
- 13:55Lord, knowing that all the prophecy had been fulfilled,
- 13:58except for the one that says, I thirst.
- 14:02Having said that, He said it is finished, and he said it in such
- 14:08a way that that Matthew, Mark and Luke don't even tell us what
- 14:11he said. They just said he shouted.
- 14:17John doesn't tell us he shouted. John just gives us the word that
- 14:20he shouted. It is finished.
- 14:23Knowing that at the end of six hours he'd be out of breath,
- 14:27he'd be suffocating, he'd be at the point of death, he would
- 14:31yell it is finished. Because you see, our Lord was on
- 14:35a mission. It was a mission that that was
- 14:38granted to him, that was given to him that he accepted.
- 14:43And when he was 12 years of age, the mission is articulated when
- 14:49he says to his mother, do you not know that I must be about my
- 14:53father's business? In Luke's Gospel there are,
- 14:57there are 7 divine musts and they all center around his, his
- 15:04mission in life. He says, don't you know mother,
- 15:10I must be about my father's business.
- 15:13I, I have a mission and that that mission is to come and to
- 15:17die. And then in Luke's gospel in the
- 15:214th chapter, he says I, I must preach the gospel of the
- 15:27Kingdom. Why?
- 15:29Because he's the king. He's presenting the king.
- 15:33He's only got the Kingdom. He as the king, he's presented
- 15:36the Kingdom. He only has a few short years of
- 15:38his ministry, so he must preach the gospel of the Kingdom.
- 15:44Then when you come to Luke Chapter 9, it says the Son of
- 15:47Man must suffer. He must suffer.
- 15:53It was his divine mission. It was the masters must mission,
- 15:58the three M's, the master had a mission and it was all a divine
- 16:02must. This must happen this way.
- 16:05And then you come to Luke chapter 13 and he says I must
- 16:10journey to Jerusalem. Why?
- 16:12Because the profit is not to die outside the city, but in the
- 16:16city. Again, the divine must was
- 16:19moving him toward a direction that would be the apex of all of
- 16:24redemptive history. Then you move on to Luke's
- 16:30gospel. I believe it's the 19th chapter
- 16:32in which you said, Zacchaeus, come down because I must go to
- 16:38your house. Why?
- 16:41Why? Because our Lord is the one who
- 16:43comes to seek and save that which is lost, and he must save
- 16:49Zacchaeus. And then when you come to the
- 16:5424th chapter of Luke, at the resurrection of the Messiah, and
- 17:02the men in white apparel, say to the women, Why do you seek the
- 17:07living among the dead? Do you not know that the Son of
- 17:13Man must suffer, die and rise again?
- 17:20And then when you come to the end of chapter 24 of Luke's
- 17:24gospel, our Lord says these words to the disciples after His
- 17:32resurrection. He says, these are my words
- 17:37which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things
- 17:41which are written about me in the law of Moses and the
- 17:43prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.
- 17:50Seven divine musts all characterize the mission of the
- 17:56Lord. And so when he says it is
- 17:58finished, he is saying the mission's been accomplished.
- 18:03I've been born to die. I've come for this purpose.
- 18:09I've come to give my life a ransom for many, and I've come
- 18:14to give my life away. I've come to die as a substitute
- 18:20for those who cannot pay the price for their sins.
- 18:26I've come to take their place. I've come to die on Calvary's
- 18:32tree. And so you have our Lord, who
- 18:35said several times, I I've come to do the will of my Father who
- 18:39is in heaven. I've come to accomplish one
- 18:42thing. Everything that the Old
- 18:44Testament was looking forward to, everything that the Old
- 18:46Testament pointed to, was Calvary.
- 18:49That was the prophetic promise. And so his mission was
- 18:55fulfilled. And so when he says it is
- 18:57finished, it truly delivers to us the consummation of his
- 19:03mission #2 it describes for us the satisfaction of his
- 19:13redemption. It describes for us the
- 19:17satisfaction of His redemption. When He says it is finished,
- 19:22there's nothing to add to it. There's nothing to take away
- 19:25from it, because everything about salvation is wrapped up in
- 19:31the finished work of Christ on Calvary.
- 19:35So when Christ says it is finished, there's nothing you
- 19:38can add to the saving work that will get you into glory.
- 19:42It's the finished work of Christ on Calvary.
- 19:46When Christ says it is finished, that means all that prophecy
- 19:50about the seed of Genesis chapter 3 verse #15 that would
- 19:54crush the serpent's head. It is finished.
- 19:57It is completed. It has happened that that that
- 20:02Genesis chapter 22 prophecy about how the Messiah would be a
- 20:05substitute for you and me. It it has happened exactly as He
- 20:10said. The prophecy in Exodus chapter
- 20:1412 about the spotless Lamb Christ our Passover was
- 20:18sacrificed for us, that was accomplished.
- 20:22The prophecy about Isaiah 53, Him being a sin bearer that was
- 20:26scorned and that was slain has been fulfilled.
- 20:32And in Isaiah chapter 25, when it says that that the Messiah
- 20:36will swallow up death, He is the swallower of death.
- 20:40Christ says I have destroyed death.
- 20:43It is finished. I am the death conqueror.
- 20:47That's what Christ did, the satisfaction of redemption.
- 20:52So much so, so much so that Isaiah 5310 says that it pleased
- 20:57the Lord to crush his Son. That's the satisfaction of
- 21:05redemption, so much so that Hebrews Chapter 9 says these
- 21:10words, that He came to taste death for every man.
- 21:15Verse 14 of Hebrews 2. Therefore, since the children
- 21:18share in flesh and blood, He himself likewise also partook of
- 21:21the same, that through death He might render powerless him who
- 21:25had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those
- 21:29who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their
- 21:32lives. That's our Lord.
- 21:36So Paul would say, death, where is your sting?
- 21:39Death, where is your victory? It's gone.
- 21:43Why? Because redemption has been
- 21:46satisfied with the phrase. It is finished.
- 21:54So while that word delivers for us the consummation of His
- 21:58mission and describes for us the satisfaction of His redemption,
- 22:04that word also displays the perfection of His revelation.
- 22:12It displays the perfection of His revelation.
- 22:17Think about this with me for a moment.
- 22:20There is a centurion, the commander of 100 men, that is
- 22:27with Jesus the whole time. He's leading 100 men from the
- 22:36the temple over the Kitchen Valley to the Garden of
- 22:40Gethsemane on late Thursday evening.
- 22:46With him comes the temple police, which should be around
- 22:50600 people, along with him, the scribes and Pharisees and
- 22:56Sadducees. So you have of upwards of 800
- 23:02people coming with tortures and and lanterns to look for the
- 23:06light of the world, but they're coming to get him.
- 23:11They get to the garden entry in there, the Lord is waiting for
- 23:14them and the Lord asks them, whom do you seek?
- 23:19And they said Jesus the Nazarene.
- 23:23Christ just simply says I am. And they all fall over
- 23:28backwards, all 800 of them. And the remarkable thing is not
- 23:35that they fell over, but that they got back up again.
- 23:39And Christ re re asked the question, Whom do you seek?
- 23:44Jesus the Nazarene. This is his incarceration and
- 23:50this centurion is there to lead the arrest of Jesus, the
- 23:54incarceration. And from the incarceration he
- 23:57leads Christ to the interrogation, which is with
- 24:00Anas, and then with Caiaphas, and then with Pilate, and then
- 24:04with Herod. And then from that interrogation
- 24:09he witnesses the, the persecution and the humiliation
- 24:13as our Lord is, is beaten mercilessly.
- 24:18And then he, he takes the Lord down the Via Dolorosa to the
- 24:22place called Calvary. And there he is crucified.
- 24:27And as he, he is crucified, he, he hears, he hears this
- 24:32intercession. Father forgive them for they
- 24:35know not what they're doing. And then he, then he sees this
- 24:39conversion of a, of a thief and then hears the confession of the
- 24:44thief. Lord, Remember Me when you come
- 24:47into your Kingdom. He hears his confession that the
- 24:50one hanging next to him is the Lord of the universe and that he
- 24:55has a, a Kingdom because he's a king.
- 24:58He speaks to his deity and to his royalty and Christ gives him
- 25:02that great promise. Today you shall be with me in
- 25:04paradise. And the centurion is witnessing
- 25:08all of this because he is the one in charge.
- 25:13And then, and then he hears and witnesses the interaction of
- 25:20Christ with his Father in heaven.
- 25:23He can read the inscription above the cross, Jesus and
- 25:27Nazareth, King of the Jews. Then he hears Christ say, it is
- 25:34finished. Father, into thy hands I commend
- 25:37my spirit. And he, he pillows his head.
- 25:43He doesn't slump over as if to say, thank God it's over.
- 25:48No, he, he pillows his head because no one takes his life
- 25:51from him. He lays it down on his own
- 25:53initiative. He was laying his life down.
- 25:56And so he just pillowed his head.
- 26:00And the centurion watching all this, hearing all this, this is
- 26:04the perfection of his revelation.
- 26:07Because the centurion then says, surely this is the Son of God.
- 26:13And Luke's gospel tells us he began to praise and glorify God.
- 26:20You see, he came to saving grace.
- 26:22Faith cometh by hearing and hearing about a word concerning
- 26:25the Christ. And he heard all there was about
- 26:29the Christ. He witnessed all there was about
- 26:32the Christ, because that was the question, Who is Jesus?
- 26:37He witnessed Caiaphas saying, Who are you?
- 26:41Are you the Christ, the Son of God?
- 26:47To which the centurion would reply at the very end, truly
- 26:50this was the Son of God. And so when Christ says to
- 26:58Telestai, it is finished, it delivers for us the consummation
- 27:03of His mission. It describes for us the
- 27:09satisfaction of His redemption. It displays for us the
- 27:15perfection of His revelation. And one more, it declares for us
- 27:24the anticipation of His final declaration, which is Revelation
- 27:3321 verse #6 which says it is done.
- 27:42We live in anticipation of a a final declaration.
- 27:48It is finished says that redemption has been
- 27:53accomplished. It is done, says recreation of
- 27:59the universe has been accomplished because the
- 28:05universe will go out of existence and they'll be a brand
- 28:08new heaven and a brand new earth and Christ will say it is done.
- 28:15It is finished as the apex of redemptive history, but it is
- 28:18done is the apex of human history and everything is
- 28:24leading to that one time, that one event where Christ from the
- 28:29tree said it is done, but from the throne will say it is done.
- 28:35I'm sorry, from the tree said it is finished.
- 28:37From the throne he will say it is done.
- 28:41That's our Lord, that's our Christ, which leads us to to our
- 28:46time around the Lord's table, for which our, our our Lord
- 28:50would say, as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup,
- 28:53you do proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
- 28:56We're living in anticipation of his, of his coming again,
- 29:00knowing that one day there will be this final declaration that
- 29:03says it is done, it is completely over.
- 29:07No more sin, no more pain, all of righteousness, everything
- 29:13perfect as God had designed it to be from the very beginning.
- 29:19And that's what we're looking forward to.
- 29:22So we gathered together on the eve or this night of of great
- 29:28Friday, the greatest of all holy days, the most anticipated day
- 29:36of prophecy was this day. Oh yes, his birth was a a great
- 29:43prophetic fulfilment. It was, but He was born for one
- 29:48reason. He was born to die.
- 29:52He came for this reason. He came to be your sin bearer.
- 29:56He came to be your substitute. He came to be the spotless land
- 30:01that would be slain and scorned and crucified on Calvary's
- 30:05cross. For the wages of sin is death.
- 30:11So Christ paid the penalty for sin.
- 30:14He died in your place, so you would have to pay for your sins.
- 30:21So we gathered together to partake at the Lord's table,
- 30:23recognizing that our sins have been forgiven at Calvary.
- 30:28We've been set free from the bondage of Satan, and no longer
- 30:34did we fear death because the swallower of death has destroyed
- 30:38it. That doesn't mean we're not
- 30:41going to die or we will die, but we will live forever with the
- 30:47Lord Jesus Christ.
