Steve: Hey Steve Stein from Guitar Zoom Academy here, and today we're gonna be talking about how to connect and visualize and understand the difference between major pentatonic and minor pentatonic, okay?
• 0:46
Steve: And how they're actually one and the same thing.
• 0:48
Steve: So let's take a look at this.
• 0:49
Steve: What we're gonna do is we're gonna look at A minor pentatonic right here.
• 0:55
  Steve: Penta being five notes, we're playing A, C, D, E, and G, A, C, D, E, and G, A, C, and then we run out of strings.
• 1:04
Steve: Okay, so if we ever want to play minor pentatonic, we start with our first finger on the root.
• 1:09
Steve: If we want to be in G minor pentatonic, we go here and play that exact same shape.
• 1:13
Steve: One, four, one, three, one, three, one, three, one, four, one, four.
• 1:18
Steve: That's the fingering that we would use.
• 1:19
Steve: If we wanted to play an F, we'd be playing one, four, one, three, one, three, one, three, one, four, one, four.
• 1:25
Steve: It's always the same shape no matter where we go.
• 1:28
Steve: And we start with the first finger on there and we get minor pentatonic.
• 1:32
Steve: If we want major pentatonic, all we do is take that same shape no matter where we are, and we move down three frets.
• 1:40
Steve: So for instance, if I was in A minor pentatonic, I'm here on the A on the sixth string, and I play this.
• 1:48
Steve: So I'm playing one, four, one, three, one, three, one, three, one, four, one, four.
• 1:53
  Steve: Those are my fingers.
• 1:54
Steve: If I wanted major pentatonic, I'd simply move back one, two, three frets, and now my pinky winds up on the A.
• 2:03
Steve: So if I want major pentatonic, I just move this entire shape back, one, two, three frets and play exactly the same thing.
• 2:12
Steve: So I have one, four, one, three, one, three, one, three, one, four, one, four.
• 2:16
Steve: But the big difference here is that this note, the pinky, is the A.
• 2:20
  Steve: That's my root.
• 2:22
Steve: When I was over here, my first finger was the A.
• 2:25
  Steve: That was my root.
• 2:26
  Steve: So again, A C D E G A.
• 2:29
  Steve: That was my root.
• 2:30
  Steve: C D E G A.
• 2:32
  Steve: That's my root.
• 2:33
Steve: If I move back to major pentatonics, so I go back one, two, three frets, this is not my root.
• 2:39
  Steve: That's F sharp.
• 2:40
Steve: This is A right here.
• 2:42
Steve: So I have one, two, three, four, five notes.
• 2:46
Steve: One, two, three, four, five notes.
• 2:48
Steve: One, and that's what I would do down there.
• 2:51
Steve: So the shape is the same, but where the root is is going to change.
• 2:56
Steve: But once you've done that, it's the same no matter where you go.
• 2:59
Steve: So let's say I was in uh B minor pentatonic.
• 3:03
Steve: So I'm playing B right here.
• 3:06
  Steve: My root is there.
• 3:07
Steve: One, two, three, four, five.
• 3:09
Steve: One, two, three, four, five, one, two, and I run out of strings.
• 3:13
Steve: If I want B major pentatonic, I simply move back one, two, three frets, put my pinky there, that's my root.
• 3:21
  Steve: One.
• 3:22
Steve: I can play this note, but this is my root.
• 3:24
Steve: This is the note I want.
• 3:25
Steve: One, two, three, four, five.
• 3:27
Steve: One, two, three, four, five, one.
• 3:31
Steve: So that conversion works anywhere you want to go, major and minor pentatonic.
• 3:35
Steve: Now the last thing I want you to see, which is really, really important if you don't know this, is if if we think about that logic, if I was going to play in A minor pentatonic, it's the same as playing in C major pentatonic.
• 3:49
  Steve: Think about it.
• 3:50
Steve: If I was in C minor pentatonic and I move down three frets, one, two, three, I wind up in A minor pentatonic.
• 3:58
Steve: And what that tells me is C major pentatonic and a minor pentatonic are the same scale.
• 4:05
Steve: The only difference is A minor pentatonic would be emphasizing this note A.
• 4:11
Steve: I shouldn't say the only difference, but the primary difference.
• 4:14
Steve: And C major pentatonic is going to emphasize C.
• 4:17
Steve: So no matter where you go on the guitar, if you visually think about it, if you start with your first finger, I'm in F sharp minor pentatonic right there.
• 4:26
Steve: I'm also in A major pentatonic.
• 4:29
Steve: Those two are always related.
• 4:31
Steve: That's major and minor, uh relative major and minor if you play piano.
• 4:34
Steve: And if you don't, it's okay, but that's what it is.
• 4:37
Steve: A major pentatonic is the same as F sharp minor pentatonic.
• 4:41
Steve: If I move up to A, A minor pentatonic is the same as C major pentatonic.
• 4:46
Steve: B minor pentatonic is the same as D major pentatonic.
• 4:50
Steve: No matter where you go, there's that relationship.
• 4:53
Steve: So not only is the guitar really cool because visually you can move these shapes around, but that relationship stays the same no matter where you go.
• 5:01
Steve: So if you wanted to be in G major pentatonic, it's the same as being in E minor pentatonic.
• 5:09
Steve: Of course, the difference being is what are you looking for inside there?
• 5:12
Steve: You know, if you're in G major pentatonic, you're probably looking for the note G.
• 5:16
Steve: If you're in E minor pentatonic, you're probably looking for the note E.
• 5:20
Steve: And there's other differences that way, but the notes themselves are the same.
• 5:24
Steve: So now you'd be able to play both minor pentatonic and major pentatonic wherever you want to go, major by moving down three frets.
• 5:32
Steve: And you'd also understand the relationship between major and minor pentatonic in the same position.
• 5:37
Steve: Okay, so quick recap: A minor pentatonic would be here.
• 5:42
Steve: A major pentatonic, you'd move down three frets.
• 5:45
Steve: And then this other thing is understanding that A minor is the same as C major pentatonic, A minor pentatonic, C major pentatonic, B minor pentatonic, D major pentatonic.
• 5:56
Steve: Of course, that means that you need to know the notes on your sixth string, which is a great thing to learn as well.
• 6:00
