- 0:08Speaker 1: Genesis 25.33 Dear Lord, through the eyes of this text,
- 0:15Speaker 1: thank you for opening my eyes to ways of being
- 0:19Speaker 1: that could derail my future. I declare that I will
- 0:24Speaker 1: be mindful to cherish and to honor the inheritance you
- 0:27Speaker 1: have for me as your child. I decree that I

- 1:48Speaker 2: Esau's Birthright Before this story, we learned about Sarah passing away.
- 1:55Speaker 2: and God's faithfulness to continue His promises through Isaac. He
- 2:00Speaker 2: provided Isaac with a wife, Rebekah, and the two loved
- 2:03Speaker 2: one another deeply. Now we will learn about the passing
- 2:07Speaker 2: of Abraham and Isaac and Rebekah's sons, Jacob and Esau,
- 2:12Speaker 2: as inspired by the book of Genesis.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:21Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In our previous passage, we
- 2:25Speaker 3: learned of Sarah's passing and Abraham's quest to find a
- 2:28Speaker 3: wife for Isaac, his son, a woman to help him
- 2:31Speaker 3: carry on the family line and fulfill God's prophecy regarding
- 2:35Speaker 3: Abraham's descendants. Today, we come to the end of Abraham's life.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Far from being a perfect man, he was full of contradictions,
- 2:44Speaker 3: faith and failings, trust and trepidation. God has been with
- 2:48Speaker 3: him through it all, however, never wavering in his promise.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Now his legacy is established. Abraham is ready to go
- 2:55Speaker 3: to the heavenly father. Notice how as he knows his
- 2:59Speaker 3: time is nearing, Abraham continues to lead his family, seeking
- 3:03Speaker 3: to establish for them a future and a fulfillment of
- 3:06Speaker 3: God's plan. You'll hear how two brothers, Isaac and Ishmael,
- 3:10Speaker 3: come together for the sake of honoring their father. We'll
- 3:14Speaker 3: then hear about Isaac and Rebekah and a story that
- 3:17Speaker 3: in many ways echoes that of Isaac's father and mother.
- 3:21Speaker 3: the struggle to bear children, the patient waiting on God
- 3:24Speaker 3: until finally God grants their greatest desire. But not just
- 3:28Speaker 3: one child. God gave them twin boys. And as you
- 3:33Speaker 3: probably have come to expect by now, when brothers are involved,
- 3:36Speaker 3: strife is not far behind. Today's passage is no different.
- 3:40Speaker 3: But listen as the struggles start before Rebecca even gives birth.
- 3:45Speaker 3: This will not be a harmonious relationship, but it is
- 3:48Speaker 3: made even worse by the parents who who each choose
- 3:51Speaker 3: a favorite. The seeds are being sown early for a
- 3:55Speaker 3: difficult relationship and a conflict that divides a family. This
- 3:59Speaker 3: theme of close family conflict is one that keeps getting repeated,
- 4:03Speaker 3: and it's one that many of us know all too
- 4:06Speaker 3: well from personal experience. What can we learn from this
- 4:09Speaker 3: story to help us in our own situations with our
- 4:13Speaker 3: own families? Let's listen to today's passage and see.
- 4:18Speaker 2: In the last years of Abraham's life, He was married
- 4:21Speaker 2: to a woman named Keturah, a young woman who bore
- 4:25Speaker 2: him six sons. Abraham was blessed in his final years,
- 4:30Speaker 2: getting to see more of God's promises unfold before his eyes.
- 4:34Speaker 2: When he knew the time was near, he gathered gifts
- 4:38Speaker 2: for his wife and sons and commissioned them to the
- 4:41Speaker 2: east to be fruitful and start their own families. Yet
- 4:45Speaker 2: Isaac was to remain in his land with Rebekah. Abraham,
- 4:49Speaker 2: the father of nations and God's chosen inheritor of the covenant,
- 4:54Speaker 2: departed from the earth at age 175. His life was
- 4:59Speaker 2: filled with riches and woes, peaks and valleys, faith and failure.
- 5:05Speaker 2: His life was a beacon of hope to all those
- 5:08Speaker 2: who follow God and proof that the Lord keeps his
- 5:11Speaker 2: promises despite our foolishness. After Abraham had passed, Ishmael returned
- 5:18Speaker 2: to his brother Isaac, and the two buried him together
- 5:21Speaker 2: beside Sarah. The God of Abraham looked to Isaac and
- 5:26Speaker 2: became the God of Isaac. The promised covenant given to
- 5:31Speaker 2: Abraham was passed to Isaac, and he would bless Isaac
- 5:35Speaker 2: and his descendants as he did with his father. Twenty
- 5:40Speaker 2: years of marriage had passed for Isaac and Rebekah. The
- 5:44Speaker 2: two lived in the love of the Lord and one another,
- 5:48Speaker 2: expanding their land and influence. Yet Rebekah in twenty years
- 5:53Speaker 2: was unable to have children. The two found themselves in
- 5:57Speaker 2: a similar situation as Abraham and Sarah once did. Yet
- 6:02Speaker 2: they waited on the Lord and trusted in Him to provide.
- 6:06Speaker 2: They came before God daily, waiting for Him to move.
- 6:10Speaker 2: They knew He would, and He did. When Isaac and
- 6:16Speaker 2: his wife Rebekah had reached twenty years of marriage, Isaac
- 6:20Speaker 2: prayed to God that she would become pregnant because she
- 6:23Speaker 2: was unable to bear children. God blessed Rebekah and answered
- 6:28Speaker 2: Isaac's prayer. That is when Rebekah became pregnant with twin boys. Lord,
- 6:35Speaker 2: what is happening to me? she prayed. The Lord responded,
- 6:39Speaker 2: You have the makings of two nations inside you. Two
- 6:43Speaker 2: people groups will come from the children in your womb.
- 6:46Speaker 2: One will be stronger and the older will serve the younger.
- 6:50Speaker 2: As the Lord had promised, Rebecca became pregnant. A few
- 6:54Speaker 2: months into pregnancy, Rebecca felt a wrestling in her womb. Concerned,
- 7:00Speaker 2: she asked the Lord what was happening to her. The
- 7:03Speaker 2: Lord prophesied over her and told her that she was
- 7:06Speaker 2: having twins. He said, You have the makings of two
- 7:11Speaker 2: nations inside you. two people groups that will be divided.
- 7:15Speaker 2: One shall be stronger than the other, and the older
- 7:18Speaker 2: will serve the younger. Rebecca kept these things close to
- 7:22Speaker 2: her heart, for she would watch them unfold as her
- 7:25Speaker 2: children grew older. When Rebecca came to term and gave
- 7:29Speaker 2: birth to her twins, she was surprised to see the
- 7:32Speaker 2: oldest baby was red, and his whole body was covered
- 7:36Speaker 2: in hair. She named him Esau, The second child came
- 7:40Speaker 2: out grasping the heel of his brother Esau. They named
- 7:44Speaker 2: him Jacob, which means heel-grabber. Isaac was sixty years old
- 7:49Speaker 2: when Esau and Jacob were born, and the two children
- 7:52Speaker 2: grew up together in the promises of God. Esau grew
- 7:57Speaker 2: up to be a skilled hunter. He was a man
- 7:59Speaker 2: of the field, strong and filled with dignity. He often
- 8:03Speaker 2: left for weeks to find meat for the family. and
- 8:06Speaker 2: became skilled in the craft of hunting and killing. Jacob
- 8:10Speaker 2: grew up to be a mild and quiet man, spending
- 8:14Speaker 2: most of his time with his mother among the tents
- 8:16Speaker 2: away from the elements. Esau was loved by his father,
- 8:21Speaker 2: because he was a provider and hunted wild game and
- 8:24Speaker 2: the firstborn son. Therefore, he was the inheritor of Isaac's birthright.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Jacob was loved by his mother, yet Jacob's mildness was
- 8:34Speaker 2: not to be mistaken for weakness. Jacob was a man
- 8:37Speaker 2: of ambition and wit. His clever tongue and opportunistic attitude
- 8:42Speaker 2: would be overlooked by his father and brother, to both
- 8:45Speaker 2: their humiliation. Esau once returned from weeks out in the wilderness.
- 8:50Speaker 2: He was hunting, traveling, and running towards the point of exhaustion.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Starvation had led him back home, and near the point
- 8:58Speaker 2: of death, he stumbled his way back to camp. Jacob
- 9:02Speaker 2: was awaiting his brother. with a fresh pot of stew
- 9:05Speaker 2: simmering on the fire. Esau, gasping out of starvation, groveled
- 9:10Speaker 2: towards Jacob, saying, Let me eat some of that red stew,
- 9:14Speaker 2: for I am exhausted. Jacob, with a sly grin that
- 9:19Speaker 2: can barely be seen through the smoke of the fire, said,
- 9:22Speaker 2: Sell me your birthright. Confused and exhausted, Esau said, What
- 9:28Speaker 2: use is a birthright to me if I am about
- 9:30Speaker 2: to die?
- 9:32Speaker 1: Swear it to me.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Jacob said swiftly. So Esau swore over his birthright to
- 9:37Speaker 2: Jacob and ate of the stew Jacob prepared. Ravenously devouring
- 9:42Speaker 2: the red stew, Esau was the first victim of Jacob's ambition.
- 9:47Speaker 2: He ate and drank and then went his way. Ever since,
- 9:52Speaker 2: Esau despised his place in life, and bitterness would be
- 9:56Speaker 2: the bond between Esau and Jacob for years. after.
- 10:04Speaker 3: We open the story today with Abraham remarrying his wife,
- 10:08Speaker 3: giving him more sons. These will not be the men
- 10:11Speaker 3: who will make up the great nation of Israel, but
- 10:13Speaker 3: as sons they would be blessed and fruitful. Before we
- 10:16Speaker 3: move on to their story, I want to point out
- 10:19Speaker 3: something that happens. When Abraham dies, Isaac does not bury
- 10:23Speaker 3: his father alone. He is joined by a familiar character
- 10:26Speaker 3: who we last saw wandering in the wilderness with his
- 10:30Speaker 3: mother after he mocked a young Isaac in jealousy. Ishmael
- 10:34Speaker 3: returns and together with Isaac bury their father. This relationship,
- 10:40Speaker 3: which was so strained, beyond repair really, is at the
- 10:44Speaker 3: very least able to be reconciled for a time to
- 10:47Speaker 3: lay their father to rest. You may be living through
- 10:51Speaker 3: a very difficult situation today or having experienced one where
- 10:54Speaker 3: it seems there is no reconciliation possible. But with God,
- 11:00Speaker 3: all things are possible. And today we see these two brothers,
- 11:03Speaker 3: who you may never have expected to speak again, coming
- 11:07Speaker 3: together to honor their father, righteous Abraham, a man who
- 11:11Speaker 3: left each with a powerful legacy of faith in God.
- 11:15Speaker 3: And then there is this. Isaac and Rebekah, like Abraham
- 11:19Speaker 3: and Sarah, must wait for many years for a child.
- 11:23Speaker 3: But they remain faithful, and after 20 years, Isaac goes
- 11:27Speaker 3: to God and asks him to give Rebekah a child,
- 11:30Speaker 3: and the Lord answers. So she becomes pregnant with twins. Early,
- 11:35Speaker 3: it's obvious that the brothers will be at odds. Even
- 11:39Speaker 3: in the womb, they wrestle with one another. They couldn't
- 11:42Speaker 3: be more different. Esau, the oldest, is a powerful hunter,
- 11:46Speaker 3: a man of the land, Jacob is mild and peaceful,
- 11:49Speaker 3: not made for outdoor living. He is also cunning and sharp-witted.
- 11:54Speaker 3: But the real problems arise because of the attitude of
- 11:57Speaker 3: the parents. Listen to what Genesis 25-28 says. Now Isaac
- 12:02Speaker 3: loved Esau because he had a taste for game, but
- 12:05Speaker 3: Rebekah loved Jacob. Sibling rivalries are common and may be
- 12:12Speaker 3: even expected, but When parents play favorites, the results are disastrous.
- 12:18Speaker 3: You shouldn't be surprised to see now that Jacob tricks Esau,
- 12:22Speaker 3: his brother, to give up his birthright for a bowl
- 12:24Speaker 3: of stew. This birthright would have given Esau claim to
- 12:28Speaker 3: a much larger portion of his father's estate. This was
- 12:32Speaker 3: his right as the firstborn son. But in his hunger
- 12:35Speaker 3: and exhaustion and in his inattention and in his self-indulgence,
- 12:40Speaker 3: He gave it all away for something that lasted no
- 12:43Speaker 3: more than a day, a bowl of food. We should
- 12:46Speaker 3: be very careful not to give up the treasures of
- 12:49Speaker 3: God for the pleasures of man. Jacob took advantage of
- 12:53Speaker 3: his brother and his own selfish ambition took hold in
- 12:56Speaker 3: his heart. This was the first but certainly not the
- 13:00Speaker 3: last of his injuries to Isaac. As the story goes on,
- 13:05Speaker 3: these brothers would, just as God told Rebekah, be in
- 13:08Speaker 3: a lifelong struggle with each other It was a struggle
- 13:12Speaker 3: with no real winners. And at the center of this
- 13:15Speaker 3: are two parents who chose to pick a side and
- 13:18Speaker 3: choose a child that they love more than the other.
- 13:22Speaker 3: We will continue to see the downward spiral of this
- 13:24Speaker 3: relationship and the explosive consequence of Jacob's deceit in our
- 13:28Speaker 3: next passage. Dear Lord, thank you for this story that
- 13:32Speaker 3: shows us how we can mend relationships as in the
- 13:35Speaker 3: case of Isaac and Ishmael. And thank you for the
- 13:38Speaker 3: story of Jacob and Esau because it teaches us how
- 13:41Speaker 3: we can avoid the danger of favoritism among parents and
- 13:44Speaker 3: the destructive effects of unresolved conflicts among siblings. Help us
- 13:49Speaker 3: to apply these lessons to our own lives and relationships.
