- 0:00Hello,
- 0:00friends,
- 0:01and welcome back to more fun on the Aligned Actor PodTube
- 0:05Stack.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: I'm Amy Schlerb.
- 0:07I'm a professional actress and a mindfulness and mindset coach
- 0:11helping actors ride
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: the roller coaster,
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: all the ups and downs,
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: all the twists and turns.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Oh boy, are there a lot of being an actor.
- 0:20All of that nonsense and stuff that we put ourselves through
- 0:25and stuff that just
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: happens to us in our careers.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: All of that.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: We do this without throwing up as best as possible.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Once again,
- 0:36we are here to explore a letter that I wrote a few years ago to
- 0:40younger actor Amy,
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: the woman who had just arrived in Los Angeles.
- 0:45So this is a letter to young actor Amy,
- 0:48part three,
- 0:49all about how all acting work is real.
- 0:53So let's see what I wrote back then and see how this advice
- 0:56holds up today.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: All acting work is real.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Enjoy it.
- 1:02Don't treat any acting job like a stepping stone or a practice
- 1:06session for a real job.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: They are all real jobs.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And I wrote that all in caps so you know I was serious.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Different budget levels may be, but your job is always the same.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Know your lines, know what you want in each scene, and do your work.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Rinse and repeat.
- 1:23Any idea that,
- 1:24oh,
- 1:24this is good practice for when I'm really working,
- 1:27is nonsense.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: You're really working now.
- 1:31Stop missing out on all the fun you're having right now by
- 1:35continually telling
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: yourself that this job doesn't count.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: It counts.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Enjoy it.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Celebrate them all.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely still love this advice.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Absolutely still love this advice.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Shocking, of course, that I agree with my younger self.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: But yes, I still love this advice.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And I want to expand on this idea of
- 1:59even more so that it includes all acting that we do paid and
- 2:05unpaid on set and in
- 2:07class auditions and silly stuff that we throw up on the
- 2:10internet just because it's
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: fun everything because when we say this isn't real
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: This doesn't count.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: This is just a stepping stone to the real work.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: In a way,
- 2:24we're disparaging the work we're currently doing by comparing
- 2:27it to other work that
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: we deem as better because it's real.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And what we're really saying is this isn't good enough compared to that.
- 2:38So like this scene in class,
- 2:40this isn't good enough compared to having a real audition.
- 2:44Or this audition isn't good enough compared to having a real
- 2:48job on a real set.
- 2:51Or this co-star role that's one line isn't good enough compared
- 2:57to having a real
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: role as a guest star.
- 3:01Or this guest star role isn't good enough compared to having a
- 3:03real role as a serious regular.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, where does it end?
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: That compare and despair mindset can cause a lot of stress,
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: self-criticism,
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: and even shame because it's a really,
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: really,
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: really,
- 3:18really slippery slope from this isn't good enough to I'm not
- 3:24good enough because
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: this is all I have and I don't have that.
- 3:30Whereas the mindset that says all acting work is the same,
- 3:34it all counts,
- 3:35it's all real,
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: can really set us free to enjoy our acting career in a whole new way.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Because I'm guessing that you got into acting because you love it.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: It's fun.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: It's creative.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: You get to express yourself.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: You love playing characters.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: You love making people laugh.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: You love making people cry.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: You love that performance high that you get when you're acting.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: So why not give yourself permission to really love your acting work,
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: all of your acting work,
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: right now?
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: And here's the fun bonus.
- 4:14I've seen so many videos of famous actors saying stuff like
- 4:18that when they stopped
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: thinking of auditions as something they had to do to get an acting job,
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: a means to an end,
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: and started seeing them as the acting job,
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: I get to act today.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: This acting work counts just the same as being on set.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: That's when things transformed for them in their careers.
- 4:41And I have some examples linked up for you so that you can go
- 4:45watch people who are
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: far more famous than me,
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: people you've heard of,
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: people who are names,
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: people who your aunts and uncles and grandparents have heard of,
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: probably.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: People who are famous,
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: famous actors saying exactly that,
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: saying that all acting work is real and it counts.
- 5:11And I really think that this mindset can make our work better
- 5:15because we're more
- 5:16committed and we're not half-assing anything or holding
- 5:19anything back because this
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: doesn't really count.
- 5:23When all acting work counts,
- 5:24I am motivated to show up different in my acting work.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: in a deeper way.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: And I feel like my work just gets better and better and better.
- 5:35It also takes some of the pressure off of booking because when
- 5:41we believe that all
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: acting work counts and therefore we can enjoy acting anytime,
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: we then suddenly have full control over our own access to our own craft.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: There are no gatekeepers between us and our passion.
- 5:56So just like a painter can pick up a palette and brushes and go
- 6:01to a piece of paper
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: or a canvas and access the joy of painting at any time,
- 6:06we can pick up a scene or a monologue and access the joy of
- 6:11acting at any time.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And sure,
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: I mean,
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: there might be people,
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: there definitely are people out there who will say,
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: well,
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: actors need an audience.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: to witness their acting.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Otherwise it doesn't count.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: But do we?
- 6:28Because maybe that's just another example of this acting work
- 6:32doesn't count because
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: I'm just doing it for me.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: What if even acting just for ourselves counts?
- 6:42I have a monologue which I've adapted from a Martha Graham
- 6:45quote and sometimes I do
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: it just for me.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Because it speaks to my soul in a really profound way.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: And it speaks to all the things that I want to do in this world,
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: both as an actress and as a mindset and mindfulness coach.
- 7:00And it affects me in a deep way and in the same deep way that I
- 7:06would hope it would
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: affect an audience.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: So that counts for me.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: I count.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: I'm an audience that counts.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: And look, you can go as deep or not deep with this as you want to.
- 7:21You're allowed to hold your own opinion about audience and
- 7:25actors needing it or not needing it.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: But my point is that in my book, all acting counts.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: It's all just your body of work,
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: your acting practice,
- 7:37very much like a mindfulness practice or a yoga practice or
- 7:41anything like that.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: And in fact,
- 7:44a mindfulness practice can help you with this mindset shift
- 7:49because mindfulness is
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: all about staying focused on the present moment.
- 7:52And in this case,
- 7:53that would be the acting work that you're currently doing.
- 7:56And then gently returning your focus to that work whenever your
- 8:01mind starts to
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: wander off and you notice like,
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: oh,
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking,
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: eh,
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: this doesn't really count.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: This is just class.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: This is just whatever.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, oh, oh, no, no, wait.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: I'm getting to act right now.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: I'm getting to do what I truly love to do.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: So let me get present to that and let me really enjoy this.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Let me enjoy my acting work right now.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Look, you know this.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Mindfulness and mindset shifts are my jam.
- 8:34This is the kind of coaching work that I love to do with my
- 8:37one-on-one clients and
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: in my workshops using mindfulness and
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: to become more present in our work,
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: more aware of where our mindset might be holding us back,
- 8:49and learning to gently shift those thought patterns so that we
- 8:53can approach our
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: craft and our career with more confidence,
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: have more fun,
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: and really enjoy being actors,
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: despite how crazy making this career that we've chosen can be at times.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: So if you're ready to transform your actor mindset, we should chat.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: I would really love to talk to you.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: I offer a complimentary session and trust me, it's not a sales call.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: I'm not trying to close you.
- 9:24I don't get in there and try to convince you of what a great
- 9:26coach I am and let's
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: close this deal and let's get you into coaching sessions.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: It's not at all like that.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: It's not Alec Baldwin and Glenn Gary, Glenn Ross.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: This is a chance for us to connect as human beings,
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: connect as fellow actors,
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: and for you to walk away with some specific actionable ideas,
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: whatever comes to me in that moment,
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: noticing what you're maybe going through,
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: and then I go,
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: okay,
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: how about you try this?
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: So maybe think about it in this way.
- 9:54Here's a couple of tools you could use starting right now to
- 9:58start gently shifting
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: and strengthening your actor mindset.
- 10:04And you could even maybe think of it like an audition where
- 10:08you're the production
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: team and I show up to this audition.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: And you get to be on that other side of the table, right?
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: You're the producers.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: You're the director.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: You're the production team.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: You're the casting director.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: And I show up.
- 10:24and the role of coach and you see what I do with the role of
- 10:27coach and I'm actually
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: coaching you so that you experience that for yourself.
- 10:32And then I go away and you get to sit and you get to think
- 10:38about it and you get to
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: go,
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: okay,
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: does my production need a mindfulness and mindset coach right now?
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Is that something that is interesting to me?
- 10:47Is that something that I think would help my career right now
- 10:50and help me as an actor?
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: And then is Amy the right person for that role?
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: Because there are other mindfulness and mindset coaches out there,
- 10:57and maybe this just gets you going so that you find the right
- 11:00person for you.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: It might be me, it might be somebody else.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: I don't know, but we should chat.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: I would love to talk with you.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: There are links to get that complimentary session
- 11:11all over the place i mean you probably you'd like trip and you
- 11:16trip over it because
- 11:17it's everywhere uh but one of the most reliable places that you
- 11:20can get it would be
- 11:22on my website thealignedactor.com but then also in the Substack
- 11:26also in the show
- 11:26notes also in the youtube description you can find that link
- 11:30it's pretty easy to
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: find
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: And then the next thing I want to tell you about is that in the meantime,
- 11:36especially if you have like an audition coming up or you have
- 11:39some kind of any kind
- 11:41of acting work that you want to be doing and you want to make
- 11:43sure you're staying
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: focused on that and not thinking about anything else.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: I have a pre audition focusing meditation.
- 11:53It's a free meditation for you and it's going to help you get
- 11:55out of your head and
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: get into your character so that you can rock your next audition.
- 12:01I'm going to help you calm your nerves and let go of
- 12:04distracting thoughts.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: All those distracting thoughts that like to perkle up,
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: perkle up when we get into auditions,
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: like how can I book this?
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: I really want to make insurance.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: What do they want?
- 12:18And then let go of those gently and then focus in on what
- 12:23really is happening in
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: that scene,
- 12:25what your character really wants in that scene so that then
- 12:28you're able to present
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: your best work.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: So I have that for you.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Again, there are links everywhere that you would expect to find links.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: And you can go pick that up for yourself.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: And it's completely free.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: It's my gift to you.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: And then speaking of calming your nerves and getting ready for auditions,
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: I have an e-book,
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Accessing Calm,
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: that is full of simple,
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: practical things.
- 12:53Fun mindfulness life hacks that I use every day to calm down
- 12:58when my stress gets
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: high,
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: when like I feel either stressed or anxious in my body.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: I use them with my kid.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: These are tools that help me release tension from my body.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: They help me keep my mind from like spinning out of control.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: They help me get through the morning rush, off to school.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: They help me calm down before a big audition.
- 13:20And they help me deal with all the stress of the world,
- 13:22which that's a lot.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: And nothing is enough to deal with all the stress of the world right now.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: But these are going to help at least.
- 13:33a really quick read and it includes video demonstrations so
- 13:36you're not just having
- 13:37to read through how to do something you get to watch a video of
- 13:41me showing you
- 13:42exactly how to do it applying it in the moment for myself which
- 13:47is helpful and it's
- 13:49all just seven dollars so seven dollars to get a bunch of tools
- 13:53that can help you
- 13:54in your day-to-day life to access more calm in your body and in
- 13:58your mind and again
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: there are links everywhere
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: There's always links,
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: always links,
- 14:03all the places to find all the things that you'd want to find
- 14:07related to me and my
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: work.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: And then the last thing I want to let you know about,
- 14:11I do have some upcoming mindfulness workshops happening at the
- 14:16SAG-AFTRA Los
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Angeles Conservatory in October and in November.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: They're exclusively for Los Angeles Conservatory members from SAG-AFTRA.
- 14:27So it's mindfulness 101,
- 14:29empower your craft and your career with your presence.
- 14:32Come learn about mindfulness and the many advantages it offers
- 14:35performers,
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: experience a guided mindfulness meditation,
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: explore the benefits of developing a daily mindfulness practice,
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: and learn some quick centering tools to use in auditions and on set.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: There's some of the same tools that are in Accessing Calm.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Just a little fun Easter egg, I guess, maybe I could say.
- 14:54So if you're a member of the SAG-AFTRA Los Angeles
- 14:57Conservatory,
- 14:58you can head to their website.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: It's linked up in the show notes.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: It's linked up in the Substack post.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: And you can get on the calendar there and you can sign up for those.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: And if you're not a member, I encourage you to join.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: So you both have to be a member of SAG-AFTRA,
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: the larger actor union for screen and,
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: yeah,
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: screen.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: So you have to be a member of that.
- 15:25And then you have to join the LA SAG Conservatory and that is
- 15:29$45 for the year.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: And you get access to a ton of workshops.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: I mean,
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: there's just everything from business stuff to probably branding,
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: to classes,
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: to audition stuff.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Like there's just a ton of stuff.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: And then what I bring is a lot of mindfulness.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Uh, I have other classes that I'm considering putting together.
- 15:53around mindset and various things but right now the class that
- 15:57I teach there is
- 15:58mindfulness 101 all about getting present and how that helps
- 16:02your craft in your
- 16:03career so that's what I have for you today and I hope you're
- 16:06having a wonderful day
- 16:08and I hope that you continue to have a wonderful day and go
- 16:12forth with yourself and
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: you're awesome
