- 0:32Speaker 2: It is Wednesday, and it is that Wednesday of the
- 0:34Speaker 2: month where we welcome into the studio. It's Larry Dawson,
- 0:36Speaker 2: who still buys cars in Larry's in studio with us
- 0:39Speaker 2: this morning.
- 0:39Speaker 3: How you doing this morning, Larry.
- 0:40Speaker 4: I'm doing great. I'm joining this weather. We talked about
- 0:43Speaker 4: that before we came on, and I'm sure the listening
- 0:45Speaker 4: audience will agree. This is refreshing compared we had a
- 0:50Speaker 4: tough fair last part of January.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Most agreed, agreed.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I was a little tired of I got a little
- 0:55Speaker 2: tired of that stuff.
- 0:57Speaker 5: Man.
- 0:57Speaker 2: The cold weather reminded me of think in Michigan a
- 1:00Speaker 2: little bit too much, you know. So, uh, I'm glad
- 1:03Speaker 2: that it's gonna we're gonna take a step back from
- 1:05Speaker 2: the from the eighty degree weather, but it's still hopefully
- 1:08Speaker 2: will be okay. Well, so we'll see how it goes,
- 1:10Speaker 2: but it has been nice. Been nice to be outside.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I didn't wear a jacket this morning. You know, it's
- 1:14Speaker 2: kind of nice.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Well, I tell you the dark we were speaking, delln
- 1:19Speaker 4: I was before we went on. I did my first
- 1:22Speaker 4: cut yesterday by a grass especially received there. That was
- 1:27Speaker 4: So it's a game Orn.
- 1:29Speaker 3: That means it's going to grow crazy.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Is a game Orn. We'll be doing this show about October,
- 1:34Speaker 4: and I'm going to say, man, I'm tired of cutting scrap.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Sure, Wishfaul would get here and things would slow down,
- 1:40Speaker 4: but you know, it happens every year, and I'm grateful
- 1:45Speaker 4: to be around to watch it. But I'm also very
- 1:48Speaker 4: glad that I'm I'm doing something different with my life
- 1:51Speaker 4: instead of what I was doing for many years coming
- 1:55Speaker 4: here talking about that and now we just kind of
- 1:56Speaker 4: come on and shoot the breeze and I let people
- 2:00Speaker 4: know that I'm still buying cars. Actually, do you remember
- 2:04Speaker 4: the movie Casinos. Sure, Robert de Niro was sitting there
- 2:09Speaker 4: in his robe and his at his bar, making up
- 2:12Speaker 4: minosis or something. His banker was setting over on the
- 2:14Speaker 4: couch and Joe Pesky walks in and he walks down
- 2:19Speaker 4: and sits down and he looks at the banker and
- 2:22Speaker 4: he said, just to be perfectly fair with you, I
- 2:25Speaker 4: need to explain to you exactly what I do. And
- 2:29Speaker 4: I saw that the other evening, and when I said that,
- 2:32Speaker 4: I thought, you know, people asked me to go, what
- 2:34Speaker 4: are you doing now, Larry? I want to be like
- 2:37Speaker 4: Joe Pesky, I exactly to be fair with you, I
- 2:42Speaker 4: want to be I want to explain to you what
- 2:43Speaker 4: I'm doing. You know, two years ago I came on
- 2:46Speaker 4: and told you I was going to sunset my my
- 2:49Speaker 4: career and start slowing down and doing something a little different.
- 2:53Speaker 4: And I did, and Stevens took over and there doing
- 2:55Speaker 4: very well by all observation, and I'm just, you know,
- 2:58Speaker 4: kudos to them. And but I just did not want
- 3:00Speaker 4: to retire and expire. So I decided I'm going to
- 3:05Speaker 4: do what I always thought I did best. You know,
- 3:07Speaker 4: there was parts of the automobile business that maybe because
- 3:11Speaker 4: my heart wasn't so much into it, maybe my talent wasn't.
- 3:16Speaker 4: I had a lot of duties, you know, being a
- 3:18Speaker 4: solo practitioner with a band of seven and running here
- 3:21Speaker 4: and there, running a service department and buying and selling
- 3:24Speaker 4: and doing all the things that a small independent dealer
- 3:27Speaker 4: does it. Were you even a small new car dealer,
- 3:29Speaker 4: we could leave the word independent out. But you are
- 3:33Speaker 4: a person that wearing multiple hats. Then you are dealing
- 3:36Speaker 4: with employees. And I had good employees, so my dealing
- 3:40Speaker 4: with them was probably easier than most. I feel that
- 3:44Speaker 4: I had excellent employees. I still say that today. But
- 3:48Speaker 4: the buying end of it is where I think I excelled.
- 3:51Speaker 4: I wasn't very good at service because I you know,
- 3:54Speaker 4: you can see I got bad hand right D I
- 3:58Speaker 4: decided I was going to take a tire off. Well,
- 4:01Speaker 4: I am right now, wrapped with super glues, righting to
- 4:03Speaker 4: hold my knuckles together. Yeah, right, hands mummy. So obviously
- 4:09Speaker 4: I wasn't a mechanic. I kind of understood stood the
- 4:12Speaker 4: lingo and understood, but I was very I was conscientious
- 4:17Speaker 4: of what it took to make the car right. I
- 4:20Speaker 4: just fisically couldn't do it. And that's where I had
- 4:23Speaker 4: a couple of texts and they're still there and doing well.
- 4:26Speaker 4: But the buying end of it, I think was where
- 4:29Speaker 4: I axcelled the best. I like to buy cars. My
- 4:32Speaker 4: heart was in the cars. But what what I did.
- 4:37Speaker 4: That was different, and now everybody's got a sign. After
- 4:39Speaker 4: we buy cars. I hear versements all over where you
- 4:42Speaker 4: can go to car body, you can go anywhere. Gas
- 4:45Speaker 4: monkey guy says he's buying cars. But I'm the guy
- 4:48Speaker 4: that will come to your house with compassion. I'm the
- 4:50Speaker 4: guy that comes to your house when you have a need.
- 4:54Speaker 4: I was taught that at a young age through my
- 4:56Speaker 4: father to operate a small television appliant center. But we
- 5:00Speaker 4: made house calls and today I still I probably go
- 5:04Speaker 4: to more houses than they ever come to me, and
- 5:08Speaker 4: I commentate them on their time and their dwelling, at
- 5:12Speaker 4: their convenience and their comfort zone. And let me tell
- 5:14Speaker 4: you something, there's a difference. I'm also a guy that
- 5:17Speaker 4: is retired, somewhat still active working at a company I've
- 5:22Speaker 4: owned for forty years, and I take no pay out
- 5:26Speaker 4: of it. So I'm kind of doing this pro bono.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Yes there's an expense, and yes they're those expenses has
- 5:32Speaker 4: to be paid, you know, insurance and taxes and gasoline
- 5:36Speaker 4: and things like that, But as far as a daily
- 5:38Speaker 4: or a weekly or monthly paycheck, I don't receive one.
- 5:42Speaker 4: I'm doing this because I enjoy doing it, and I'm
- 5:45Speaker 4: helping a lot of people. I have helped so many
- 5:48Speaker 4: people with situations comes up on them in their lives,
- 5:52Speaker 4: no father, their own and they do not know which
- 5:55Speaker 4: direction to go, and not always do eye by their cars.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Sometimes I know I could go. Well, have you thought
- 6:01Speaker 4: about this? I'm actually just finished up helping a loved
- 6:06Speaker 4: one that unfortunately both their parents experienced some problems that
- 6:11Speaker 4: they're both going to assisted living. And guess what, there's
- 6:14Speaker 4: a car, there's a dadiness they can't drive. And when
- 6:18Speaker 4: you go into assisted living, they sum you up as
- 6:21Speaker 4: your net value as to where you're going to go,
- 6:23Speaker 4: just to make this scenario simple. And they have came
- 6:27Speaker 4: to me and we've had this conversation now for probably months,
- 6:31Speaker 4: guiding them through the different directions they could have could go.
- 6:35Speaker 4: One of them was selling me the car. The other
- 6:39Speaker 4: one was we found another member of the family that
- 6:43Speaker 4: needed a car, and I kind of suggested a different way,
- 6:46Speaker 4: and that's the direction it took. You know, did I
- 6:49Speaker 4: prosper Bye know? But I'm not doing this for prosperous types.
- 6:53Speaker 4: You know, my earning days is behind me. I'm here
- 6:56Speaker 4: with still sign its. As we buy cars more to
- 7:00Speaker 4: help the es. I buy cars, and yes, I have
- 7:03Speaker 4: to sell that car to create it somewhat of a
- 7:05Speaker 4: profit to put in this small company. And it's a
- 7:07Speaker 4: much smaller company now, but it's something that I dearly
- 7:11Speaker 4: love to do. I do it to help people out
- 7:15Speaker 4: there that has helped me in the past, and now
- 7:17Speaker 4: it's coming back to me. I've had people call me
- 7:19Speaker 4: and says, hey, Larry, you saw me this car like
- 7:22Speaker 4: fifteen to twenty years ago. I got this situation. I
- 7:24Speaker 4: heard you on the radio. You're still kind of active.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Could I ask you a question? Sometimes that question leads
- 7:30Speaker 4: to me buying their car. Sometimes the question is answered
- 7:34Speaker 4: that helps them along and they know what which direction
- 7:37Speaker 4: to go. I tell you a very common question I
- 7:40Speaker 4: guess get asked. Is the difference between two words and
- 7:45Speaker 4: an or. So I want to explain that if your
- 7:48Speaker 4: car is titled and mister and missus John Q and
- 7:53Speaker 4: missus John Q, and it requires both signatures. So in
- 7:58Speaker 4: case we do have any illness that one cannot sign,
- 8:03Speaker 4: or death where one cannot sign, well you know that
- 8:07Speaker 4: requires two signatures. I have always suggested in my transactions
- 8:13Speaker 4: in selling automobiles, I always suggested used the word or
- 8:17Speaker 4: because you do not know what perils next to you.
- 8:20Speaker 4: I mean, if you'd ask me to sign a title,
- 8:22Speaker 4: bad Paul, right here, it's kind of filed right now.
- 8:26Speaker 4: I mean I could scribble something out, but this bad
- 8:29Speaker 4: hand could have been a lot worse in the situation
- 8:31Speaker 4: happened to me. Could you take your left hand? Yeah,
- 8:34Speaker 4: you could do that. But having that both parties of
- 8:38Speaker 4: equal importance to sign, and both parties can walk work independent.
- 8:44Speaker 4: And that is what I've always suggested in you know,
- 8:48Speaker 4: I don't think all dealers suggest that. And it comes
- 8:51Speaker 4: up and and then there's a situation. Then there's a
- 8:55Speaker 4: situation you have to deal with that. Also, I have
- 9:00Speaker 4: suggested along the ways when the parents normally normally it's
- 9:04Speaker 4: the parents, they are let's just say our dealt with
- 9:09Speaker 4: a bad blow in their life, expectancy is shortened. Is
- 9:15Speaker 4: let's go ahead and get some signatures. Now, there's nothing
- 9:19Speaker 4: wrong with going and doing this, because when you wait
- 9:23Speaker 4: and you don't remember the dad doesn't remember where he
- 9:26Speaker 4: put the title. Mom doesn't remember where dad put the title,
- 9:30Speaker 4: or vice versas. Now you've got to find a title. Well,
- 9:34Speaker 4: there's the next step is when you bought it there
- 9:37Speaker 4: was a lean on it. Yes, you paid it off,
- 9:40Speaker 4: but the DMV does not recognize that until it flows
- 9:43Speaker 4: through where where did Dad have it financed at? Well?
- 9:46Speaker 4: I don't know. And so these questions can be answered
- 9:50Speaker 4: when all parties are presents. And that's where I come
- 9:53Speaker 4: in at in preparation of now, Well, end up with
- 9:57Speaker 4: a car maybe, but that's not really what I'm about.
- 10:00Speaker 4: I mean, the end read game. I would like to
- 10:02Speaker 4: have the car. I'll seek to buy your car, but
- 10:05Speaker 4: if I don't get the car, We're good.
- 10:07Speaker 5: You.
- 10:09Speaker 4: John Q Public helped me for forty years build a
- 10:12Speaker 4: small business, and I guess I'm paying back with a
- 10:17Speaker 4: thank you of what they did for me and.
- 10:19Speaker 2: The thing that really that really captures me. And if
- 10:23Speaker 2: you're listening out there, I know you know what I
- 10:25Speaker 2: mean by this, and I'll try to describe it. The
- 10:29Speaker 2: granular level of detail that you bring to a conversation
- 10:32Speaker 2: like this because you've been doing it for so long
- 10:33Speaker 2: and this has been your thing for forty years. You know,
- 10:36Speaker 2: you have so much experience in this area other people
- 10:39Speaker 2: out there. It kind of reminds me of when you
- 10:41Speaker 2: go to the gas station and you get your car
- 10:43Speaker 2: charger you know, for your phone. They don't sell phones,
- 10:47Speaker 2: they don't sell chargers. That's not their normal thing. They
- 10:50Speaker 2: kind of sell them there because somebody came in to
- 10:52Speaker 2: them said, hey, you know you could sell You could
- 10:53Speaker 2: sell some of these and make some money. You can
- 10:55Speaker 2: get these cheap chargers, hang them next to the kiosk
- 10:57Speaker 2: where people check out, and people will buy them, and
- 11:00Speaker 2: I'll get them and they'll leave. Now you get one
- 11:01Speaker 2: of those chargers, and it might work for your phone,
- 11:03Speaker 2: if you have like the newest phone or whatever model
- 11:06Speaker 2: that that one happened to work for, especially back before
- 11:08Speaker 2: they became a little bit more universal. Yes, they might work.
- 11:11Speaker 2: It would probably work when it lasts very long.
- 11:13Speaker 5: Eh.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Maybe not, you know, it maybe get you through your
- 11:15Speaker 2: drive if you left your charging your hotel room or
- 11:18Speaker 2: whatever you had to get somewhere. They offer the service.
- 11:21Speaker 2: They sell chargers, but they're not very good at it.
- 11:23Speaker 2: If you went to a cell phone dealer or for
- 11:25Speaker 2: somewhere that offered those things more specifically, they'd be able
- 11:29Speaker 2: to tell you, oh, that's your model a phone. This
- 11:31Speaker 2: is the charger I can get for you. This will
- 11:32Speaker 2: give you the best fast charging or whatever it might
- 11:34Speaker 2: be for it the level of specificity when you go
- 11:37Speaker 2: somewhere that specializes in what that item is is so
- 11:40Speaker 2: much different than when you're kind of getting the generic
- 11:42Speaker 2: off the wall version of it. And there's all kinds
- 11:45Speaker 2: of places where you can get generic off the wall
- 11:46Speaker 2: people that will buy your car, because suddenly people's like, oh,
- 11:49Speaker 2: you can turn a buck buying a car. You know,
- 11:51Speaker 2: we can, we have leverage if we buy a car.
- 11:53Speaker 2: We can do this. So tons of businesses out there
- 11:56Speaker 2: suddenly will buy your car from you. But will they
- 11:58Speaker 2: do it well? And will they do it right? And
- 12:00Speaker 2: with the specificicity and the knowledge that somebody like you
- 12:03Speaker 2: has and the question and the answer is no, clearly no.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Well, and also the follow up. I got a call
- 12:09Speaker 4: a month ago, young man his mother. I bought her
- 12:14Speaker 4: Lexus two years ago, right after I retired, went to
- 12:16Speaker 4: her house, not once but twice. It was very comfortable,
- 12:20Speaker 4: played with the dog to the next dollor neighbor, and
- 12:23Speaker 4: I bought the car. Well, for whatever reason, I did
- 12:26Speaker 4: not ask. I got a request. A lot of people
- 12:30Speaker 4: calls me ld. He said, hey, ld, do you have
- 12:34Speaker 4: the bills sell where we sold you that car? I said, well,
- 12:37Speaker 4: it's archive, yes, it's in a building own in the basement.
- 12:41Speaker 4: But yes, I said, He said, is there any way
- 12:44Speaker 4: you could get me a copy? I said, well, give
- 12:46Speaker 4: me a day or so. Sure, I'll do that for you.
- 12:49Speaker 4: And I went down and found a foul and opened
- 12:52Speaker 4: it up and I actually just text him a picture
- 12:56Speaker 4: of it. And I said, is this sufficient or do
- 12:57Speaker 4: I need to make a coffee mount too? And he
- 12:59Speaker 4: saw no. You know, with these phones you can photo
- 13:01Speaker 4: shoot something, they can print it. He said, thank you
- 13:04Speaker 4: very much. Get a hold of a boog boy and
- 13:07Speaker 4: see if that will happen two years later. Look, try
- 13:09Speaker 4: to find that person you bought it from somewhere they
- 13:13Speaker 4: needed that, and obliged them by providing them what they need. Also,
- 13:19Speaker 4: if you go to my office right now, on the
- 13:21Speaker 4: top shelf on the right hand side, there's an envelope
- 13:23Speaker 4: with a lady's name. She called me six months ago
- 13:29Speaker 4: needed information on a car that they bought two or
- 13:33Speaker 4: three years ago, or when I was in business. Did
- 13:36Speaker 4: not ask him, the reason being but that she felt
- 13:39Speaker 4: like she had to have it. I tried to walk
- 13:41Speaker 4: her through some things, but she I said, I tell
- 13:44Speaker 4: you what I said, I'll gather it up for you,
- 13:47Speaker 4: I said. But when I found it and called her back,
- 13:52Speaker 4: I said, well, I have it, but your name's not
- 13:55Speaker 4: on it. It is in I assume your husband. I'm
- 13:58Speaker 4: not going to assume this death, but it is in
- 14:01Speaker 4: another person's name that you mentioned. Is only in his name,
- 14:05Speaker 4: so he can come and get it. But I need
- 14:09Speaker 4: to see some driver's license. You know, I just can't
- 14:11Speaker 4: pass this information out. And I did a lot of
- 14:15Speaker 4: work for her because it went back and forth. She
- 14:18Speaker 4: didn't tell me that it was in her husband's name.
- 14:20Speaker 4: She told me her name, Well, it was the last
- 14:23Speaker 4: name that when I went to the file there was.
- 14:25Speaker 4: It was a common name. But she did say what
- 14:28Speaker 4: kind of vicar was, so you know, I connected the dots.
- 14:32Speaker 4: So after two steps going to the basement and not
- 14:35Speaker 4: in the building, occupied in another building, and got it.
- 14:38Speaker 4: And then I called her back and I said, well,
- 14:40Speaker 4: I have this information on a gentleman's name, but it
- 14:44Speaker 4: lines up the car you told me it was, and
- 14:45Speaker 4: she said, well that was my husband. I said, well
- 14:48Speaker 4: that's the person. I've not seen him since.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Now.
- 14:52Speaker 4: I do not know what they were seeking, but I
- 14:55Speaker 4: was professional enough to know I just don't hand out information.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Once again, find out per that doesn't just give this
- 15:02Speaker 4: information out. You know, when when you when you rid
- 15:06Speaker 4: yourself of an automobile, I advisk people you want to
- 15:10Speaker 4: do a walk through your house before you move. You
- 15:13Speaker 4: might want to do a walk through of your car
- 15:15Speaker 4: before you give the car up. There is things such
- 15:19Speaker 4: as a medical pass that I returned last week of
- 15:23Speaker 4: a doctor at WU hospital that traded and I'm sure
- 15:29Speaker 4: he's only going to need that parking pass, but I
- 15:31Speaker 4: return it. I returned sunglasses, I return remote controls, I
- 15:36Speaker 4: returned garage door openers, and I returned some with say
- 15:40Speaker 4: personal blockings that I and I'm not gonna tell anybody,
- 15:45Speaker 4: but I'm I'm not gonna throw it in a trash
- 15:47Speaker 4: can because I feel like it's your personal property. You
- 15:50Speaker 4: sold me your automobile. But I'm going to return your
- 15:53Speaker 4: property because sooner or later you're gonna figure out it's
- 15:56Speaker 4: not there now CDs, it might hit the trash can
- 16:00Speaker 4: nobody listens to. But there's things that I know that
- 16:06Speaker 4: I go way beyond, way beyond the call of duty.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Let's call it. When I purchase your car, and I
- 16:13Speaker 4: keep the purchase to myself as to who you are.
- 16:17Speaker 4: I don't go out and the next step is, hey,
- 16:20Speaker 4: this person, he's the sports figure. That's not me. We'll
- 16:26Speaker 4: just keep it between us. I think during the month,
- 16:31Speaker 4: during this bad weather, I purchased a few cars, and
- 16:36Speaker 4: during this bad weather I was probably only one of
- 16:38Speaker 4: very few people on the road. I could tell because
- 16:40Speaker 4: I was the only versus on the road. But I
- 16:43Speaker 4: told you i'd be there, and I came to your
- 16:45Speaker 4: house and there was a couple of circumstances that I
- 16:49Speaker 4: had to make a return call, either bringing back something
- 16:53Speaker 4: you left or following up in coming back to get
- 16:57Speaker 4: it because maybe you didn't have all the paper work
- 17:00Speaker 4: or the title. And then I hand you walked you
- 17:02Speaker 4: through how to get that title that you placed somewhere
- 17:06Speaker 4: that you cannot find. And that is a very common occurrence,
- 17:10Speaker 4: especially when there has been a death. That is a
- 17:14Speaker 4: very common occurrence. And the deal has to stop right there,
- 17:19Speaker 4: because a transfer of property is only as good as
- 17:22Speaker 4: the title.
- 17:24Speaker 3: That is it.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Would you buy a piece of property without mister Peyton
- 17:27Speaker 4: or somebody providing you, you know, a free and clear deed,
- 17:31Speaker 4: probably not listen. It was a ten dollars next door lot,
- 17:34Speaker 4: you know that Grandpa way, so you have to have
- 17:37Speaker 4: that free and clear title as well, because it has
- 17:40Speaker 4: to be passed along just like a deed or a
- 17:43Speaker 4: piece of property. Well that's all I've ever done. I
- 17:46Speaker 4: mean I would ask someone like mister Peyton or Tom
- 17:51Speaker 4: or someone else that has the knowledge and the insurance
- 17:58Speaker 4: behind what they do of their search, you know, the
- 18:01Speaker 4: forty or fifty or sixty year deep search. And in
- 18:04Speaker 4: the same way as the automobile I mean these I
- 18:07Speaker 4: have been tricked.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Trust me.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Over the years, I can tell you sometimes that I
- 18:13Speaker 4: have been tricked, and I will tell people I saw
- 18:16Speaker 4: this illustration the other day because I do watch a
- 18:19Speaker 4: lot of things pertaining to the automobile world, to the
- 18:23Speaker 4: new scams, and they're coming at us so so fast.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Is if if you decide you want to buy a
- 18:31Speaker 4: car from John Q Public and if you're listening out here,
- 18:35Speaker 4: this is the most important thing I want to tell you.
- 18:37Speaker 4: And they have a title in front of you, go
- 18:42Speaker 4: over and look on a right hand sad right hand
- 18:47Speaker 4: side and see when that title was produced. If that
- 18:53Speaker 4: title was produced in the last few days or weeks,
- 18:59Speaker 4: you're Intenna's go off because it might very well be
- 19:03Speaker 4: a scam. Why was that title produced. And you know,
- 19:08Speaker 4: if a person might come back with a story that
- 19:11Speaker 4: you know, you believe and that's okay. But that is
- 19:14Speaker 4: a tall tale sign right there that there might be
- 19:18Speaker 4: a scam going on. But what I'm telling you is
- 19:21Speaker 4: that title just got produced. There's a reason they're telling
- 19:24Speaker 4: you they've had this car for five years. They're giving
- 19:28Speaker 4: you the pedigree, the history behind it. But then they
- 19:31Speaker 4: produce you a title that was just produced. Something isn't right.
- 19:37Speaker 4: That's great information, that's great information. That's information that I
- 19:41Speaker 4: have upstairs between these two years that I basically I
- 19:47Speaker 4: do pass that free. You could use most places. You
- 19:50Speaker 4: pay for this, or you're going to really pay for this.
- 19:53Speaker 1: So pick up the phone.
- 19:54Speaker 4: It's three oh four five four five is zero two eleven.
- 19:57Speaker 4: I'm really easy to find the next order where I was.
- 20:01Speaker 4: I'm not competing with Stevens because they're wonderful guys. Chasing Richard.
- 20:05Speaker 4: You know, I do everything I can to promote him.
- 20:09Speaker 4: They're leasing the property and and they bought the business,
- 20:12Speaker 4: and that's good. I'm just doing my little thing buying cars.
- 20:15Speaker 4: So that's why I come out once a month. I
- 20:17Speaker 4: get to see you, I get to.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Talk with public.
- 20:20Speaker 4: I get to tell us some little stories. And I
- 20:24Speaker 4: have found that when I miss a month, like I
- 20:26Speaker 4: did last month, you know how to get asked. I
- 20:29Speaker 4: didn't hear you?
- 20:29Speaker 3: Where did you go? Where you go?
- 20:30Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 20:31Speaker 3: Where are you going? Did you?
- 20:32Speaker 4: Quinn? I said no. We had a little snaffoo. But
- 20:36Speaker 4: that also happens. But we worked that out. So I'm
- 20:40Speaker 4: going to be here in July. Also we extend the month.
- 20:43Speaker 4: I was going to be here anyway. But that's that's
- 20:47Speaker 4: what happened to me last month, that the weather was terrible.
- 20:49Speaker 3: I know, it was just kept on missing on that.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Let's do this.
- 20:52Speaker 2: It's going to take our break. When we come back,
- 20:53Speaker 2: we'll have plenty more to talk about. If you want

- 21:50Speaker 5: Because we have lawyers in all fifty states, I see
- 21:53Speaker 5: lots of lawyers ads. Most seem to be bragging on results,
- 21:57Speaker 5: but are they true or misleading? For example, in some cases,
- 22:01Speaker 5: a firm may try case even though the at fault
- 22:04Speaker 5: party has no lawyer, then bragg in the ad about
- 22:07Speaker 5: their results. My son Matt got one for nearly fifty
- 22:11Speaker 5: million dollars, but we never collected one dime. Some lawyers
- 22:15Speaker 5: may say they got a result, even though they were
- 22:17Speaker 5: setting second chair at a firm like mine, and even
- 22:20Speaker 5: though they had little to do with it. Happens all

- 24:21Speaker 2: along those lines and anything else that Larry talks about,
- 24:25Speaker 2: you're welcome to goes to call this morning again.
- 24:26Speaker 3: That's three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight.
- 24:29Speaker 4: You know, over the past well two decades plus, I've
- 24:33Speaker 4: been coming here. When I first came in here, we
- 24:38Speaker 4: had these things called phone books.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Oh yes, I remember the phone back.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Their extinct, but anyway, did they still exist?
- 24:44Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 24:45Speaker 4: They're about this thick.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I know they're so thin now.
- 24:48Speaker 4: But if we would have had one, and I think
- 24:50Speaker 4: the first year here was O two, I would invite
- 24:54Speaker 4: people to open up that phone book and go to
- 24:56Speaker 4: automobile dealers and tell me how many of them are
- 24:59Speaker 4: still in business?
- 25:00Speaker 3: Oh yeah, not very many.
- 25:01Speaker 4: How many names are going?
- 25:02Speaker 3: You know what mad respect I have for you too.
- 25:04Speaker 3: You didn't rename yourself a A Larry Dawson.
- 25:09Speaker 4: But that's one thing that I guess. I'm the older
- 25:12Speaker 4: gentleman around that still has some information still love cars.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Over the years, I was very involved with if you
- 25:20Speaker 4: remember the do Walk, which I think ended three four
- 25:24Speaker 4: years ago, and I think I had nine years of
- 25:27Speaker 4: donating in a car.
- 25:28Speaker 3: I remember, yeah.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Into that and you know it was once again I
- 25:33Speaker 4: can safely say I believe I was the only sponsor
- 25:37Speaker 4: that gave anything of large expense and I didn't charge.
- 25:44Speaker 4: I gave the car free. I do know who the
- 25:47Speaker 4: second valuation of the gift was given away. They did
- 25:52Speaker 4: it at their cost. I did it free. And it's
- 25:57Speaker 4: just like this information. Because I was a true entrepreneur
- 26:02Speaker 4: in the automobile world, and I've done other things. I mean,
- 26:05Speaker 4: you've heard me talk enough about buildings and rentals and
- 26:11Speaker 4: the different things I've dabbled in, and I've been invested in.
- 26:14Speaker 4: I'm invested now in a couple other things. And I
- 26:17Speaker 4: enjoyed doing that, but my heart was always in the
- 26:21Speaker 4: automobile world. Real estate has been my second love. It
- 26:26Speaker 4: wasn't my livelihood. It has created something for me to
- 26:29Speaker 4: do after my first love, which was automobile. It's because
- 26:32Speaker 4: I do occupy some commercial buildings and I enjoy doing
- 26:34Speaker 4: that and I really enjoy watching them flourish. I have
- 26:39Speaker 4: a young lady that has an nitrue wellness, fitness and wellness,
- 26:42Speaker 4: that energy, drinks and other things in the we call
- 26:46Speaker 4: it the four to twenty building. It's easy to remember
- 26:48Speaker 4: four twenty that you want to get a little boost
- 26:51Speaker 4: of energy, go four twenty, first avenue. And when you
- 26:54Speaker 4: have that, she has done very remarkably well. Or you
- 27:00Speaker 4: meet somebody like Dustin Wore and Dustin Warren is a
- 27:04Speaker 4: young man that I have met. He is opened up
- 27:07Speaker 4: a construction company and I could see that coming. I
- 27:11Speaker 4: met him, actually I met him. He came to my
- 27:15Speaker 4: farm deer hunting. He asked me permission, which was nice
- 27:19Speaker 4: to come to my farm, and he put cameras up.
- 27:23Speaker 5: Well.
- 27:23Speaker 4: One day, snowy icy Dave was sitting there talking and
- 27:27Speaker 4: I told his future father in law, I said, that
- 27:30Speaker 4: young man's a winter. I said, whatever he decides he's
- 27:33Speaker 4: going to do in life, he's going to do well.
- 27:35Speaker 4: I can just I can see it. I think I've
- 27:37Speaker 4: been around maybe because of happening to hire people and
- 27:41Speaker 4: disappointments from I, big disappointments. I said he was a winner.
- 27:46Speaker 4: And so Dustin asked me the other day I would
- 27:49Speaker 4: mention him. I said, Dustin. Yes, I would, because you
- 27:52Speaker 4: are one of very few that enters into meeting me
- 27:57Speaker 4: that you made an impression. And he does gutters and
- 28:00Speaker 4: sightings and things like that. And I don't have his
- 28:03Speaker 4: number with me, and you feel free to text me,
- 28:06Speaker 4: call or I'll give you his contact. But Dustin is
- 28:09Speaker 4: one of those you meet, you meet one hundred people,
- 28:11Speaker 4: and he stands out. And once again, he's a father
- 28:16Speaker 4: of a young lady that calls me Uncle Larry. So
- 28:19Speaker 4: we're not family, we're kind of family. And he stands out.
- 28:24Speaker 4: And when I see that one person, I really get
- 28:28Speaker 4: involved in promoting them. Ten years ago plus or Mia said,
- 28:33Speaker 4: I don't have much hair, as most people know. But
- 28:35Speaker 4: I used to stop at a little barbershop in Nitro
- 28:39Speaker 4: and the barber asked me one day, he said, do
- 28:42Speaker 4: you know where you know I could find a building? Actually,
- 28:45Speaker 4: the city of Nitro had bought the building, and he said,
- 28:48Speaker 4: I'm they're probably going to lose his spot or raise
- 28:50Speaker 4: my rent. I just need to find a new spot.
- 28:53Speaker 4: And I thought about it and I went back down
- 28:56Speaker 4: and talked to him. I said, we want you buy
- 28:58Speaker 4: this building. He said, well, the finances and they you
- 29:02Speaker 4: know banks, and I said, oh, I know, I know.
- 29:04Speaker 4: I went through this, and I said, to tell you
- 29:06Speaker 4: what you going to make the offer? If they accept it,
- 29:10Speaker 4: I loan you the money you buy this building.
- 29:14Speaker 3: And I did.
- 29:15Speaker 4: And also I've allowed, I allowed. I have entered into
- 29:19Speaker 4: another agreement with him for another building. And one of
- 29:24Speaker 4: the reasons I did that is every morning while I
- 29:26Speaker 4: went to work, he was standing there working. And every
- 29:29Speaker 4: evening when I went home, he was standing there working.
- 29:33Speaker 4: That was an impression to me because he's much younger
- 29:36Speaker 4: than me, and that's not easy to stand on your feet.
- 29:38Speaker 4: You know, you can blow it off. And I told
- 29:41Speaker 4: him that, and it's been a wonderful experience that has
- 29:43Speaker 4: allowed him to prosper for his future. Like someone gave
- 29:47Speaker 4: me an opportunity when I was his age, and someone
- 29:50Speaker 4: did give me the opportunity. I had the opportunity to
- 29:53Speaker 4: buy the building well which I once occupied, and I
- 29:57Speaker 4: bought the building on my own two feet down payment
- 30:00Speaker 4: with a bank. Now, buying inventory was different. Go to
- 30:03Speaker 4: ask you a bank to loan you money, especially back
- 30:06Speaker 4: then on used pre owned cars in the inventory, I mean,
- 30:09Speaker 4: they would all but laugh at you. And a gentleman
- 30:12Speaker 4: lives in Florida. His name is Dan Beddinger saw something
- 30:16Speaker 4: in me maybe I didn't see, and he told me.
- 30:19Speaker 4: He says, I'm going to help you, and he did.
- 30:23Speaker 4: I paid him by prematurely. In other words, I paid
- 30:27Speaker 4: him off quicker than I think he thought I would,
- 30:29Speaker 4: or maybe quicker than I thought I would. But it
- 30:32Speaker 4: allowed me to get started because floor planning for independent
- 30:35Speaker 4: dealers was very Money wasn't so easy to obtain in
- 30:39Speaker 4: nineteen eighty seven. I mean it was not. It wasn't
- 30:42Speaker 4: flowing down the streets. We just come out some tough times.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Eight inter streets was very high.
- 30:47Speaker 2: That was before all the interest rates went down something.
- 30:50Speaker 2: You're still in the double digit yeah.
- 30:53Speaker 4: Yes, And so you know, and there was a lot
- 30:55Speaker 4: of failures in and eighty of automobiles, you know, the olmbargo,
- 31:00Speaker 4: the Iran hostage situation, and just Christ was broke. I mean,
- 31:04Speaker 4: it was very, very tough, and somehow some dealers got
- 31:08Speaker 4: through it. Some dealers did not get through that. And
- 31:10Speaker 4: so then when dealers don't get through things, you know
- 31:13Speaker 4: who takes the hit the lenders. I mean that's who
- 31:16Speaker 4: took the hit, and that was fresh on their mind.
- 31:18Speaker 4: So you know, there was no sense going. But I
- 31:21Speaker 4: was able to obtain the seed money to buy inventory
- 31:25Speaker 4: from a gentleman that had done well in life at
- 31:28Speaker 4: an early age and took a shot with me. And
- 31:32Speaker 4: here we are forty years later. Well, I've taken chances
- 31:35Speaker 4: with other people, got stung once, get hurt. I think
- 31:43Speaker 4: it was a good product, and I think it would
- 31:46Speaker 4: still work. I think that it was too fast of growth,
- 31:50Speaker 4: and that's what I tried to share with young people.
- 31:53Speaker 4: Don't try to grow too fast. I'd rather have one
- 31:56Speaker 4: good one than two or three. So so stands here
- 32:00Speaker 4: for popsicle stands, lemonade stands, car stands, whatever you're doing,
- 32:04Speaker 4: you give me one good one that that owner is
- 32:07Speaker 4: there and occupying and watching everything that comes and goes
- 32:10Speaker 4: across that counter, from a customer to a straw that
- 32:14Speaker 4: goes into trash can pick it up. Then two or
- 32:17Speaker 4: three stores out there that you're trying to fly around
- 32:20Speaker 4: and manage in your mismansion, and you're relying.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Up on I can't tell you how many times I've
- 32:26Speaker 2: seen this, and I know you have too, because you've
- 32:27Speaker 2: been in business for a long time. Somebody that starts
- 32:29Speaker 2: a successful small business and then suddenly for whatever reason. Well,
- 32:32Speaker 2: we can expand we can open up another branch. And
- 32:35Speaker 2: I mean good luck to you if you decide to
- 32:37Speaker 2: do that. I have seen that work so infrequently.
- 32:40Speaker 3: In my life.
- 32:40Speaker 4: It's a kiss of death.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it almost always. It is.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Frankly, it is Larry Dowson's out of Seals. I started there,
- 32:47Speaker 4: I stayed there. Did I have opportunities. I had a
- 32:49Speaker 4: lot of opportunities. I have opportunity to buy new car stores, Yes,
- 32:52Speaker 4: I did. I chose just to control my destiny, destiny
- 32:57Speaker 4: my way. One of the stores I could have purchase. Actually,
- 33:01Speaker 4: I was at the lawyer's office two side, and I
- 33:06Speaker 4: tabled the conversation and I said, let's meet Monday. This
- 33:10Speaker 4: was a Friday that was on Mother's Day two thousand
- 33:14Speaker 4: and four, on a Friday at Larry Copeman's office, sellers there.
- 33:21Speaker 4: I was there, and the money was there. I chose
- 33:23Speaker 4: not to. Five years later that store was caught in
- 33:28Speaker 4: the wine down and was taken away from them.
- 33:31Speaker 3: Wow. Yeah, see it's five.
- 33:34Speaker 4: Years later and nine when Chrystal Corporation filed bankruptcy. That
- 33:39Speaker 4: was a store that went into the wine down. In
- 33:41Speaker 4: other words, he had ten days and they were out.
- 33:45Speaker 4: I didn't buy the store. Bob Anderson was the dealer.
- 33:48Speaker 4: Bob was a very good friend of mine. Roger House
- 33:50Speaker 4: bought that store. He owned a Pontiac's store across from me.
- 33:53Speaker 4: Not only did he lose that Dodge store, he lost
- 33:56Speaker 4: that Pontiac Buick GMC store with one signature from a
- 34:00Speaker 4: resident because of his decision. And all these people had
- 34:04Speaker 4: these dealerships that build them, has passed them on his sons,
- 34:08Speaker 4: their sons, daughter's family, whatever they're going. Yeah, I mean
- 34:13Speaker 4: I watched a Dodge store besithing Joey Hollay and had
- 34:15Speaker 4: the Crossery store. It's going. I mean, there's a lot
- 34:18Speaker 4: of people lost their stores. Was it their fault? No,
- 34:21Speaker 4: it wasn't their fault. Why did Pontiac go away? Why
- 34:24Speaker 4: did we give the Chinese Buick because Buick that was
- 34:28Speaker 4: their number one seller, So we was cut Pontiac so
- 34:31Speaker 4: we can sell more Buicks over there. I mean, I
- 34:34Speaker 4: don't agree with that decision. It was made. I had
- 34:36Speaker 4: to live by it. It didn't really affect me, but
- 34:39Speaker 4: it did. Because you're an independent dealer with two new
- 34:42Speaker 4: car stores right beside you, you can walk to them
- 34:44Speaker 4: and they go away. You feel that everybody felt that.
- 34:49Speaker 4: So getting back to the destiny, I wanted to control
- 34:52Speaker 4: my own Now did I know that? No, for no,
- 34:55Speaker 4: But something said, Larry, stay where you're at. I'd been
- 34:58Speaker 4: in business see eighty in ninety about fifteen years at
- 35:01Speaker 4: that point, and I could have bought it was there
- 35:04Speaker 4: and there was one other chance, and I walked away.
- 35:07Speaker 4: And I have no regrets whatsoever because I got to do.
- 35:11Speaker 3: It my way.
- 35:12Speaker 4: And you know, your name wasn't up on the stars
- 35:16Speaker 4: and the platforms and all that. But we've talked about
- 35:19Speaker 4: a couple of dealers here in the last ten years
- 35:21Speaker 4: that I said, now that's not gonna work. Yeah, yeah,
- 35:24Speaker 4: that store will not work. It will go way.
- 35:27Speaker 3: And it did, Man, it didn't. Yeah, that's true.
- 35:30Speaker 4: So expanding, you have to be very careful in your expansions,
- 35:34Speaker 4: and especially when you're small, if you're not let's say
- 35:38Speaker 4: your borderline borderline equity there, unless you really have the cash,
- 35:45Speaker 4: really have the money, and really have that right person,
- 35:48Speaker 4: because if you got to go out and hire that
- 35:50Speaker 4: person to open that store up, if you can't promote
- 35:53Speaker 4: what there you go.
- 35:54Speaker 3: That is the most employer, right that's the most important
- 35:56Speaker 3: thing right there.
- 35:57Speaker 4: If you don't have that long term employee sitting there
- 36:00Speaker 4: besides you and those trenches fighting everyday battle where he
- 36:03Speaker 4: sees how you want to operate, or she sees or
- 36:06Speaker 4: they see, and you're going to put them in a
- 36:09Speaker 4: new shingle and a different zip code with your money.
- 36:13Speaker 4: If you're just gonna go hire that person put him
- 36:16Speaker 4: in there, watch.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Out, yep. Yeah, I'm yeah, absolutely right.
- 36:20Speaker 2: That's the same problem that I ran into when we
- 36:21Speaker 2: were opening up different stores. It's tough, man, It's tough
- 36:25Speaker 2: because not everybody has that same passion that you do,
- 36:27Speaker 2: of course, and they don't learn it the same way
- 36:29Speaker 2: that you do.
- 36:30Speaker 3: He has to be careful of those things.
- 36:31Speaker 4: You came from the best training company that I have
- 36:34Speaker 4: ever experienced, and I think it's the best well rammed company. Enterprise.
- 36:39Speaker 3: Now, I had some a lot of experience there.
- 36:41Speaker 4: Enterprise is a family owned business to this day, to
- 36:45Speaker 4: this day, to this day, Saint Louis.
- 36:47Speaker 3: Maybe Taylor family.
- 36:48Speaker 4: Yeah, and I've dealt with it. I think it's is excellent.
- 36:53Speaker 4: Ramp and I have a niece that went to work
- 36:56Speaker 4: for them, and I would say this before she ever
- 36:58Speaker 4: went to work for them, about two to three years ago,
- 37:00Speaker 4: and I told James A. Jamie, if you can follow
- 37:03Speaker 4: roles and instructions and do it their cookie cutter away
- 37:07Speaker 4: and don't try to branch out and do something different,
- 37:10Speaker 4: do it their way, you'll go to the moon. And
- 37:13Speaker 4: that girl is on the ways of the moon. Yeah.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a I I started a little later in life,
- 37:18Speaker 2: and it was for a very particular reason that I
- 37:20Speaker 2: got that job, and it served my purpose exactly for
- 37:22Speaker 2: how I needed it. If I was in a different situation,
- 37:24Speaker 2: I was stayed there, probably I elevated myself relatively quickly. It's, uh,
- 37:29Speaker 2: it's pay for play, so if you're good at the job,
- 37:30Speaker 2: you make a lot of money. And it worked pretty
- 37:33Speaker 2: well for me. It was really a very good job,
- 37:36Speaker 2: and very briefly. It's really funny. That's one of the
- 37:38Speaker 2: few companies I've ever known or worked for that has
- 37:40Speaker 2: found a way to quantify customer service experience. Your your
- 37:43Speaker 2: job is related to that. Yes, And a lot of
- 37:46Speaker 2: the little extra things that you talk about doing naturally
- 37:48Speaker 2: through you are the things that they teach you to
- 37:50Speaker 2: do to get that score up so you can get
- 37:52Speaker 2: promoted throughout the company. Right, Yeah, that's you're on the
- 37:55Speaker 2: right path with all that stuff. That's Larry Dawson from
- 37:57Speaker 2: Larr Dawson's Auto Sales. They can give you a call
- 37:59Speaker 2: right what's your phone?
