- 0:30Now let's get into the episode. Hello everyone, and welcome to
- 0:34the Doctor Randy Show where we breakdown what's really
- 0:38happening across beauty, aesthetics and the business
- 0:41behind it. Today's guest, she helped bring
- 0:44Korean skin care to a global audience.
- 0:48She challenged the multi step routines that Korean skin care
- 0:51became known for and she turned that into Crave Beauty, one of
- 0:56the most talked about skin care brands today.
- 0:59Please welcome the founder and CEO of Crave Beauty, Leah You
- 1:04Welcome to the show Leah we. Thank you so much for having me
- 1:09on the show. I have such huge respect for the
- 1:12work that you're doing. So definitely excited to talk
- 1:16all the skin care today. We're very.
- 1:18Excited to have you here and have our very first conversation
- 1:21about K Beauty Korean Skin Care. So thank you for joining us and
- 1:27I will jump right in. So Leah, you are the founder of
- 1:31Crave Beauty, one of the most talked about skin care brands
- 1:34right now. When someone discovers you and
- 1:38the brand for the first time, what do you want them to
- 1:41understand right away? Less is more, certainly,
- 1:44especially if you do have compromised skin barrier, acne
- 1:47prone skin, eczema, whatever you're dealing with.
- 1:51I think it's so easy to add more products because we've been
- 1:54accustomed to being sold so many new miraculous ingredients and
- 2:00great products on the market. But sometimes you just want to
- 2:04take a step back and listen to your skin's cravings.
- 2:07And I wish more people know how smart their skin is.
- 2:11And our skin does tell us, right?
- 2:13We can try something new in our skin care for a week or two and
- 2:17it tells us right away go keep going or pump the brakes.
- 2:21Right, 100% it is a living breathing organ.
- 2:24So I do think there is definitely signals that your
- 2:28skin is constantly communicating.
- 2:29But it's just that we were taught to listen to the Tik
- 2:33Tokers or the Youtubers or the experts on the Internet over
- 2:37developing that relationship with your skin intuitively.
- 2:40So I think more and more people are learning that with just
- 2:44seeing damage, skin barrier and sensitivity, redness and
- 2:47reaction, they just come back to like, what is this sign of
- 2:53breakouts and what is my skin signaling?
- 2:56So 100%. Well, you've built a brand that
- 2:59breaks a lot of the traditional rules in beauty.
- 3:03Fewer products, slower launches, less noise.
- 3:07I've done my research and it's still scaling.
- 3:10What do you think people are really responding to right now
- 3:14to create that connection with the brand?
- 3:16A lot of times beauty brands especially think that they have
- 3:20to grow by launching more products and to a certain extent
- 3:26it does help you with the top line growth.
- 3:29But in the social media era, we are so fatigued with the amount
- 3:35of pressure and the products out there.
- 3:38It makes you feel like if you don't have a 10 step skin care
- 3:41routine, you don't have a skin care routine at all or you're
- 3:44falling behind in life. So with this audience is
- 3:47constantly in this analysis paralysis, they're bombarded
- 3:50with options. I do think when you have a less
- 3:54is more, fewer but better product ortfolio, it kind of
- 3:59like approaches people as a fresh breath of air.
- 4:03So I do think that have been resonating really well with our
- 4:08core audience. And then they see the results
- 4:11through products through stripping back their routine and
- 4:14also simplifying their skin care routine in general.
- 4:17So then they come back. So we have like an enormous
- 4:20amount of retention rate and repeat purchase rate, which I
- 4:24think signals how amazing the product is first and foremost.
- 4:28But people can thrive. Their skin can thrive with fewer
- 4:33products and fewer steps. And when you came in onto the K
- 4:37beauty scene, you kind of pushed in another direction to simplify
- 4:41things. How was that for you kind of
- 4:44swimming upstream? Swimming upstream is the exact
- 4:48description that I would definitely say.
- 4:50So I started my career in the beauty industry by working for
- 4:54one of the largest beauty conglomerate companies in South
- 4:56Korea named Amor Pacific. And that's where I first hand
- 5:00learned and got exposed into how the product development process
- 5:05works in the beauty space. And what I noticed was that
- 5:08rarely do they start from the customer's pain point.
- 5:12It really did start from how do we hit the sales target and
- 5:16where are we now and how do we fill this gap solution more
- 5:20products. So of course, at the time when
- 5:23we first launched with the less is more or a slow down skin care
- 5:26philosophy, it was definitely going against a grain.
- 5:30But slowly but surely, a lot of people who have eczema, who have
- 5:35acne per and skin, who have skin barrier is coming up with
- 5:37testimonials with how transformative simplification
- 5:42worked for their skin. So I think that really did help
- 5:46propel the messaging board. Well, if you think about if
- 5:50you're using 14 different products and 1 is doing the
- 5:55wrong thing for your skin, how are you really sure what it is,
- 5:58right? It's almost like if you're
- 5:59having a food allergy, they tell you to do like a food rotation
- 6:02diet because how can you tell what is bothering your skin if
- 6:06you're using 14 different products a day?
- 6:09Absolutely. The elimination diet and it's so
- 6:12interesting because the K beauty in the US at the time, it
- 6:16doesn't necessarily mirrors what was trending in South Korea at
- 6:20the time. So when we first started, which
- 6:23was around 2017 in December, there was a huge conversation
- 6:27around what's called, it literally translates to skin
- 6:32care diet. And what it means is that it's
- 6:35basically elimination of skin care because a lot of the South
- 6:40Koreans also realized there's too many products in the market.
- 6:43So then I carried that over to Crave Beauty.
- 6:46At the time, I think the messaging of when K Beauty was
- 6:49first introduced properly to the mainstream audience in the
- 6:52United States was predominated prominently around extensive
- 6:57routine, which I don't think was necessarily the exact reflection
- 7:02of South Korean philosophy at the time.
- 7:05So it sounds like that has become really your philosophy
- 7:09behind the brand is the less is better and you've been very
- 7:13consistent about it. How do you really help people
- 7:17decide what's worth using on their skin?
- 7:20We asked them to strip back to the bare basics.
- 7:23So if you look at our product portfolio, we have core series,
- 7:27which are your everyday basics, the most stripped back version
- 7:31of your skin care capsule wardrobe, if you will.
- 7:36So these are your cleansers, your moisturizers and sunscreens
- 7:40that are non negotiables to optimize and maintain a good
- 7:44skin barrier health. Anything addition to that is
- 7:48going to be dependent on your skin goals, your skin concerns,
- 7:52whatever you're trying to target, whether that's
- 7:54hyperpigmentation or a broken skin barrier or eczema.
- 7:58Anything else beyond a typical cleanser, moisturizer and
- 8:02sunscreen would be supplementary.
- 8:04So then we categorize that into the supplement series or booster
- 8:08series. So I would people to just start
- 8:12from cleanser, moisturizers, sunscreen.
- 8:14And what's good about our core series is that the ingredient
- 8:18list is also as simple as possible, so there's fewer
- 8:23chance or less chance of either breaking people out or causing
- 8:28any allergic reaction. So we don't have any fragrance
- 8:31or essential oils for that very reason.
- 8:33If someone has sensitive skin, they can just start from this
- 8:36cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen and see how your skin
- 8:41performs in the next two weeks. Do you need a little bit more
- 8:44lymph or do you have more redness that you want to target?
- 8:48Then add something like Great Barrier Leaf, which is going to
- 8:51help with their skin barrier. But with these supplementary
- 8:54products, I want people to know that you shouldn't treat it like
- 8:57a routine where you need to always stick to 24/7 every
- 9:01single day. So let's talk about how products
- 9:05come to life at Crave Beauty, because as I understand, you
- 9:09don't just launch products at the drop of a hat.
- 9:12So what makes a new product worth bringing to market under
- 9:17the Crave Beauty name? First and foremost, definitely
- 9:20starting with the biggest customer pain point.
- 9:23And what I mean by that is when it comes to treating acne prone
- 9:29skin, I know that a lot of the acne treatments or acne
- 9:33targeting serums and autos can be approaching acne in a way
- 9:40that's all about eradication. Like killing the acne causing
- 9:43bacteria and trying to wipe out all the bacteria that is left on
- 9:48your skin. And it does impact not only skin
- 9:52microbiome, but also your skin barrier health overall.
- 9:56So for us, we approach skin or product development from a sense
- 10:01that how do we work with the skin, not against it and how can
- 10:05we rebalance the skin if possible.
- 10:08So when we looked at a study that acne prone skin is
- 10:12deficient in a fatty acid called linoleic acid.
- 10:16That was like a light bulb moment for me personally because
- 10:19having struggled with acne for years and years and years by
- 10:24also using products that are oil free, that are super stripping,
- 10:29super harsh, that are burning my skin barrier day and night, that
- 10:33left my skin to a paper dry state.
- 10:37I thought fatty acids or oils were the enemy.
- 10:41But the medical journals that I was dissecting and reading were
- 10:45telling me otherwise, that acne prone skin can actually benefit
- 10:50from replenishing linoleic acid. Topically introducing oil to an
- 10:54oily, acne prone skin didn't make sense, but if you look at
- 10:58it from a skin physiological standpoint, it does make sense.
- 11:03Like Little Lake acid deficiency is so real that's causing the
- 11:07semen to become waxier and more communogenic, causing more acne
- 11:12bacteria. So if you can replenish that and
- 11:15if you can supplement whatever you're deficient in topically,
- 11:19your skin will do its natural job.
- 11:22And the natural functionality in the ecosystem is something that
- 11:25we try to respect as much as possible.
- 11:28So much of him hydrogen cleanser to oil, a lot to also simple
- 11:31water. Every product has its purpose
- 11:34and has its own audience. They can overlap or not, but
- 11:38they have a pretty equal distribution of the revenue mix,
- 11:42which is telling of how intentional our product
- 11:46development process was. Right.
- 11:48Well, Congrats on keeping the line very streamlined because
- 11:51you're right, I see, you know, most beauty lines are launching
- 11:54many things per year just to keep that momentum going.
- 11:58So let's talk about the line itself.
- 12:01I'd love for you to walk us through the products and how
- 12:04they fit together. And really, when somebody tries
- 12:09Crave Beauty for the first time, where do you usually tell them
- 12:12to start? And I have the whole product
- 12:14line up sitting next to me so I can kind of show them and and
- 12:18I've been experiencing them as well.
- 12:20So I would definitely start from the core series first and
- 12:23foremost. Much of him Hydrid in cleanser
- 12:25is such a gentle antioxidant packed cleanser that I wish that
- 12:30I had when I had the peak of acne days because I was someone
- 12:35who was very abusive with my cleansers.
- 12:38Also on top of that, I had a pretty aggressive physical scrub
- 12:43that I was literally just damaging my skin and tearing my
- 12:46skin barrier left and right and using a cleanser that's super
- 12:51alkaline to leave no skin barrier behind.
- 12:55So that's why Matcha Hump Hydrogen Cleanser was our very
- 12:58first product from the brand that I wanted to launch with for
- 13:03myself. Honestly, how can we do less
- 13:05harm or do no harm to your skin barrier?
- 13:07And then also Simple Water Cream is a beautiful moisturizer
- 13:12that's super lightweight, great for anyone who has oily acne
- 13:16prone skin or even phone acne. And we use only nine ingredients
- 13:22to make a moisturizer. Honey, I was reading all of the
- 13:24ingredients the other night, so it's very simplistic and I think
- 13:28that's great. So we know that a lot of people
- 13:31are already experimenting with a lot of different actives in
- 13:35their skin care routine. A lot of people are educated and
- 13:38informed, they're excited about skin care.
- 13:39So they already have a pretty robust active routine is what I
- 13:43identified with. So then we don't need to overdo
- 13:47actives with another moisturizer with retinol in it or another
- 13:51moisturizer with so many different peptides.
- 13:53So for it's a simple water cream, we wanted to simplify as
- 13:58much as possible so it can blend into anyone's skin care routine
- 14:01very seamlessly without without causing any clash or without
- 14:05overloading or overwhelming your skin.
- 14:07And then beat the Sun Sunscreen is also another antioxidant
- 14:12packed lightweight, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful sunscreen
- 14:16that have won multiple Best of Beauty awards, which is.
- 14:20I saw this I'm. So grateful for it and a lot of
- 14:23people do love it for the barely there type of sensation, right?
- 14:28Like you don't want to feel the sunscreen and so we made it as
- 14:31lightweight as possible. So it's easy to apply any guys
- 14:35who's starting their sunscreen game for the first time.
- 14:39They think it feels like nothing, so they love it.
- 14:42And then there's Great Barrier Leaf, which is a skin barrier
- 14:46repairing serum, which I believe is one of the very first skin
- 14:50barrier serums that has caught some mainstream attention in the
- 14:54United States. This has been my favorite in the
- 14:56line so far. So amazing.
- 14:59Yes, it. Smells kind of pungent and
- 15:01funky. Again, like we don't use any
- 15:03freak to mask any of the natural odors of the plant oils that we
- 15:07use. That oil, the smell is actually
- 15:10coming from oil called Tamano oil.
- 15:13We use 10% of it. Tamano oil is like one of my
- 15:16Holy Grail oils of all time that's super restorative,
- 15:20rejuvenating and I thought it would pair so well with all the
- 15:24skin mimicking ingredients as a repairing serum, as a skin
- 15:28barrier restoring serum. So grape barrier leaf has
- 15:31probably the craziest testimonials.
- 15:34The before and afters for grape barrier leaf is quite
- 15:37unpredictable. We made it for just compromised
- 15:40skin barrier like redness, irritation, sensitivity.
- 15:43But people's use cases will surprise you.
- 15:46Like for eczema flare ups to people who had like a complete
- 15:52photo damage because they spilled lemon juice on their
- 15:54hands and they went outside in the sun without actually washing
- 15:58their hands. So they burned their entire hand
- 16:01left with huge scar. They applied Great Barrier leaf.
- 16:05I don't know where they got that idea from.
- 16:07They applied Great Barrier leaf and then kid you not she
- 16:10uploaded this picture of the before and after.
- 16:13It was like night and day difference and since then she
- 16:16was a lifetime customer upgrade barrier leaf.
- 16:19That's probably the core 4. And then if anyone again has
- 16:23acne prone skin, I would highly recommend oil a la, which is a
- 16:29beautiful Wino lake acid rich oil serum that I wish I knew of
- 16:34or I wish I had when I was in my 20s.
- 16:37It's a very, very gentle approach to respecting your
- 16:41skin, especially if you do have acid prone skin.
- 16:44We also have crazy before and afters for breakouts, so I'm
- 16:48really, really proud of that creation.
- 16:49And some new proprietary packaging for this, right?
- 16:52I was reading all about that. We've been investing a lot in
- 16:56different beauty supply chain and companies that are doing
- 17:00really cool things that tries to help propel the beauty industry
- 17:05into a more sustainable direction.
- 17:07So we do have a corporate VC fund that invest in some of
- 17:11these technologies, which then I get the first hand exposure to a
- 17:16lot of cool things that are stuck in the lab that can be
- 17:19groundbreaking, that can be the next big thing.
- 17:22So the inner bottle was one of the packaging solutions that you
- 17:25see, which a lot of the people do call it as an egg packaging
- 17:30because it just resembles a little egg that's stuck inside
- 17:33the bottle. It helps with not only the
- 17:35product usage. So the silicone insert or the
- 17:39butyl rubber insert shrinks as the product gets used.
- 17:43So you're basically getting every single drop of the
- 17:48product. And it was annoying when our
- 17:51product was stored in a typical pump dispenser because a lot of
- 17:55the times like emulsions can get stuck around the wall and you
- 17:59can never get to the bottom of a product.
- 18:02I think the inner bottle was one of the first technology that
- 18:06have gone viral unintentionally on Tiktok because people started
- 18:10buying Oilola just to see if there is an egg inside their
- 18:15bottle. So.
- 18:16I was going to say I've never. I'm sent skin care everyday and
- 18:19I've never seen anything something like that very
- 18:21innovative. I'm glad that people are
- 18:23obsessing over it and hopefully that gives more attention to the
- 18:27suppliers so more beauty brands can tap into their technology.
- 18:33So Leah, as you look across the line, is there one product that
- 18:37you feel really represents the brand as the hero product?
- 18:41Is there one that is your favorite that you think?
- 18:45If you're going to try my line, try this one.
- 18:49Oila I was. Going to say by the way you were
- 18:52talking about it, I bet. It this one Oila is a very
- 18:55special child. Yeah, it's not only emotional
- 18:58because it's tied to acne, but it's so different from any other
- 19:02acne treatments. But I must say, people who don't
- 19:05have acne can still apply it like this, doesn't have any
- 19:08benzyl peroxide or salicylic acid or any drying ingredients.
- 19:13So if you have dry skin or normal skin, this is still a oil
- 19:18rich serum that has soothing ingredients like Zika and
- 19:22epidermal growth factors. So it'll be very soothing and
- 19:25nourishing for them. So we do have clients who don't
- 19:30have acne but still do enjoy Oilola.
- 19:33But of course the primary audience is acne grown skin for
- 19:36this. And I know you have a new
- 19:38product, Lip Barrier Relief. We'd love to hear about that
- 19:43product. I have not had the chance to try
- 19:45it, but very excited to try it. And it sounds like it's new and
- 19:50innovative and exciting. So tell us about it.
- 19:53Yeah, I have it right in front of me.
- 19:55So the Lip Barrier Relief was basically a play on our Great
- 20:00Barrier Relief success. So with this, with so many lip
- 20:06balms out there, we always think about how do we replace existing
- 20:10demands with a more sustainable option If people want lip balm
- 20:15from us, I just don't want to throw just another lip balm to
- 20:18the market. So that said, we went to the
- 20:21drawing board and what we do. All is sustainable sourcing and
- 20:25what I wanted to really introduce to the beauty industry
- 20:28in the terms of new conversations is taking less
- 20:34from nature and more from waste and quite frankly, the beauty
- 20:39industry. With the explosion of natural
- 20:42skin care, the explosion of cleaning beauty, I do think a
- 20:45lot of the clients and customers are demanding for more natural
- 20:49ingredients and botanical ingredients.
- 20:51And these are all beautiful and all that, but sometimes it does
- 20:55come with a huge environmental cost.
- 20:59So for us, we've been very proactive about how do we source
- 21:04more from waste, industrial byproducts or other food
- 21:08byproducts. And we looked at farm waste with
- 21:11this product. So the lip bearer leaf features
- 21:14a special ingredient that is coming from the almond trees or
- 21:18almond shells and hulls to be very specific.
- 21:22So this was a limited edition and we actually did not
- 21:26anticipate this to go viral or this to sell out so fast.
- 21:30But I'm glad it did because it means that we have more
- 21:34attention and more now more resources to look for other farm
- 21:38waste. And we're already talking to
- 21:40some farms in upstate New York to see if we can convert their
- 21:45waste into something that we can include in the next version of
- 21:48Lip Barrier Relief. But the formula itself is a very
- 21:51beautiful lightweight lip balm. I don't like lip balms that are
- 21:56super glossy or sticky. So this is a very low key lip
- 22:01balm that doesn't shout like I am a lip balm or I am a lip
- 22:05gloss. So if someone is into that type
- 22:08of lip or into that type of lip balm, I think this would be for
- 22:12them. But unfortunately it is out of
- 22:14stock until foreseeable future. I haven't had a chance to try
- 22:19it, but I'm very excited. We'll get you the next drop for
- 22:22sure. OK, deal.
- 22:24As you look across your line on the flip side of this, what do
- 22:29you feel might be missing from the market that you haven't
- 22:32addressed yet or maybe what's on the horizon there?
- 22:36There's so many things. We're first going into a thicker
- 22:41moisturizer category and we're trying to make that as
- 22:45sustainable as possible with not only farm waste materials, but
- 22:50also more renewable feedstock. So that's been really, really
- 22:55exciting. And the texture has been
- 22:58definitely something that I have been playing with for the past
- 23:02two years that I can't wait for everyone to try.
- 23:05And then secondly is would be a mineral sunscreen that is, that
- 23:08can be truly inclusive. I know it's an impossible task
- 23:12to make a mineral sunscreen white cast free, but we've been
- 23:16developing a formula or multiple formulas for that matter, in the
- 23:20past. I want to say five years.
- 23:22So that's been on our PD project for the longest time and
- 23:26hopefully we we have a final approved formula soon for that.
- 23:32Let's talk about the audience that you have built around all
- 23:37of this, which is phenomenal. And that really blew me away and
- 23:41definitely could use your advice on how to build a brand with
- 23:45over 1,000,000 subscribers and close to 100 million views.
- 23:50So by educating people on skin care in a way they hadn't seen
- 23:56before, how did that shape the kind of following that you have
- 23:59today for your brand? When I first started Crave
- 24:02Beauty, I leveraged my own existing personal community.
- 24:06So like whoever was subscribed to Lee IU's channel immediately
- 24:11got converted to become our customers or initial pool of
- 24:15customers. But I think slowly but surely,
- 24:18because the product works, the product actually spoke for
- 24:21itself. So I didn't need to rely too
- 24:24much of my own community to become customers for life.
- 24:29I quickly have gotten organic word of mouth.
- 24:33We really did not spend a dime on advertising for the first
- 24:37five years. And we were able to still grow
- 24:40like at a very, very significant rate year over year.
- 24:44And that's been a huge pleasure to just watch and enjoy and was
- 24:48a huge privilege as well because I had an existing audience.
- 24:52But I truly do think that when it comes to scaling the brand
- 24:58beyond your personal brand, your products need to be great.
- 25:03If you don't have a great product, they're just going to
- 25:06be a one time purchase. But in order to have a repeat
- 25:09purchase, in order to scale the brand and grow the brand, I
- 25:12think the products really do need to speak for itself to find
- 25:15its own audience. And that's why we obsessed so
- 25:19much when it comes to product innovation.
- 25:22It seems that it resonated and I found that you've also
- 25:25introduced something called kelp collab where you're, if I'm
- 25:30saying that correctly, where you're collaborating with other
- 25:33brands rather than competing in the traditional way.
- 25:35How does that come together? Totally Kelp Collab is such a
- 25:40cool initiative that is organized by a nonprofit called
- 25:44Green Wave. And again, going back to the
- 25:48beauty industry, facing an ethical dilemma and a challenge
- 25:52of sourcing from nature. When it comes to natural
- 25:55ingredients, there's nothing more that's more regenerative
- 25:59than seaweed. Seaweed does not need a lot to
- 26:03grow so abundantly and it is honestly one of the most giving
- 26:09organisms on the planet. So Green Wave really wanted to
- 26:13introduce kelp, AKA seaweed, as an attractive, sustainable
- 26:18material for beauty brands to use.
- 26:21So then they had marshalled and opened up this entire kelp
- 26:26collab program where they're funding 9 to 10 different indie
- 26:31brands to utilize Alaskan grown kelp in their formula.
- 26:37And when I first saw this, I was like, yes, this is the future.
- 26:41Kelp is the future. Sustainable regenerative
- 26:43sourcing is the future for the beauty industry.
- 26:46And we do storytelling really well.
- 26:49So if we use kelp, we can also convince other indie brands and
- 26:54other bigger brands to also see kelp a little bit more
- 26:57different, differently and hopefully more attractively from
- 27:00a sustainability perspective, but also from a performance
- 27:03perspective, from a skin care raw material.
- 27:06And that's where we joined the program.
- 27:09And in the cohort, there's Credo Beauty, True Botanical, Sanzi
- 27:14Skin by Pamela Anderson, and then four or five other brands
- 27:19that I'm super excited to collaborate with.
- 27:21We all come up with different product ideas using the same
- 27:25material, which is kelp. So we're, we're developing an
- 27:28eye gel that hopefully helps with the puffing and also dark
- 27:33circles because that can be something that a lot of people,
- 27:38you know, have a lot of pinpoints for.
- 27:40So we're developing that in the most sustainable way as possible
- 27:44and hopefully we have a product to showcase next year.
- 27:49Let's zoom out for a minute and just talk about your expertise
- 27:54in the industry because you've been doing this for quite some
- 27:57time. And just your opinion on when
- 28:01you look at skin health right now, where do you think it's
- 28:04headed? Where do you think the next five
- 28:06years are going to take us? Hopefully in the next five years
- 28:12people understand that less is more, going back to the original
- 28:18backbone and the genesis of the company.
- 28:20Like I am all for skin minimalism, skin care, diet and
- 28:25really doing no harm to your skin first and foremost.
- 28:28As we start to wrap up, if everything that you're building
- 28:33continues in the direction that you're envisioning, what does
- 28:37Crave Beauty look like in a few years from now?
- 28:42Hopefully, we would have a great retail partner chosen by then
- 28:48and I want to grow the company by selling one product to 100
- 28:52people instead of selling 100 products that are unnecessary to
- 28:56one person. So that said, our distribution
- 28:59strategy is really, really important and I'm looking at
- 29:03models like the early days of Vaseline where they only had one
- 29:07hero SKU and they are still to this day like American household
- 29:11staple, right? So everyone knows about
- 29:14Vaseline, everyone has Vaseline somewhere in their medicine
- 29:17cabinet. And I want to be like that where
- 29:20we see Great Barrier leaf in every shelf and we see much a
- 29:25cleanser with someone from Arizona to someone in New York.
- 29:29So I would love to keep the product assortment as tight as
- 29:34possible but have the wider reach if possible with the help
- 29:38of retailer for sure. I'm sure you will make it
- 29:42happen. I have no doubt.
- 29:44Well, we do something on the show called the speed round, I
- 29:47don't know if you've seen it, where I ask a series of kind of
- 29:50rapid fire questions and I think that K beauty being the hot
- 29:54topic it is, it's really just one word answer.
- 29:57It's kind of yes or no. So first question, glass skin
- 30:01hot or not? Not.
- 30:03Ten step routine, dead or still relevant?
- 30:06Dead. Double cleanse always or
- 30:09overrated. Always.
- 30:12Toner essential or pointless? Somewhere in between.
- 30:17Essence must have or just marketing.
- 30:20Just marketing. Sheet masks, results or just
- 30:24vibes? It does give results.
- 30:27It's not the most sustainable for sure.
- 30:29Slugging genius or just greasy? Genius.
- 30:34Skin barrier, real issue or just a buzzword?
- 30:37Real issue. Exfoliating daily?
- 30:41Yes or absolutely not. Hell no, I went there.
- 30:47Acne. Dry it out or heal the skin.
- 30:50Heal the skin. Sensitive skin, less products or
- 30:54more targeted products? Less.
- 30:57Hydration more important than actives?
- 31:00Yes or no? Yes.
- 31:02Layering strategic or excessive? Somewhere in between.
- 31:07Gentle skin care better long term, yes or no?
- 31:11Yes. Active overload?
- 31:14Is that our skin's biggest mistake?
- 31:16Yes or no? 100% yes.
- 31:19Couple more opinions here with K beauty versus US, would you say
- 31:25K beauty versus US, preventative versus corrective?
- 31:29It used to be. Do you see Western skin care as
- 31:33too aggressive? It used to be.
- 31:35What do you think about combining both?
- 31:37Smartest approach. Yes or no?
- 31:40OK. Viral skin care trends.
- 31:43Do you think that's helpful or harmful?
- 31:45Very harmful. TikTok routines.
- 31:48Trust them or shut it off. Shut it off.
- 31:53Glow. Is that healthy skin or is that
- 31:56really just a filter culture? I would say the latter.
- 32:00K beauty today you think it's better than ever, Yes or no?
- 32:03No. Global adoption?
- 32:06Do they understand K beauty or completely misunderstood?
- 32:10There are both. There are both cases.
- 32:13Sometimes it drives me nuts as a Korean, but sometimes I really
- 32:18do appreciate the KB trend all over.
- 32:22Skin cycling smart or overhyped? Smart.
- 32:26And then our strong two question close here.
- 32:30One thing everyone should stop doing to their skin, and one
- 32:34thing everybody should start doing to their skin.
- 32:36Drying their skin out. Fair enough, start.
- 32:39Doing simplifying skin care. Great.
- 32:44Well, I think I've gotten an education, so I know that our
- 32:47viewers and listeners definitely have today.
- 32:50And Leah, thank you so much for joining us and giving us our
- 32:53first dip into the K beauty world here on the Doctor Randy
- 32:57Show. And thank you SO.
- 32:58Much. We look forward to having you
- 33:01back again, you know, whenever something new and exciting is
- 33:04happening there. And thank you for introducing us
- 33:07to Crave Beauty. Is there anything else that
- 33:09you'd like to share with our viewers and listeners?
- 33:12No, I think our viewers are very smart.
- 33:14They know what they're doing. So hopefully it wasn't like too
- 33:17much of the same information that they already know.
- 33:20But yeah, thank you so much. It's been a huge pleasure to be
- 33:23on this show and be interviewed by you, Doctor Randy, and hope
- 33:27your audience took away something.
- 33:30I'm sure they did. I definitely took a lot away
- 33:33from it. So thank you everyone for
- 33:35joining us today and for tuning in to the Doctor Randy show.
