- 2:30the price is pretty much capped on that. Ellen Allen's going to join us
- 2:32to talk about that. Plus coming up a little later on this show,
- 2:35Canaan County Commissioner Lance Wheeler is going to be stopping by. Let me welcome
- 2:38in first thing this morning, though I debitly get in Canada for governor more
- 2:42Capital. Good morning, sir, Welcome to the show, and let me
- 2:44wish you and yours a very happy holiday season. Merry Christmas. Dave.
- 2:47It's great to be with you. Thank you for having me on, thank
- 2:50you for being here. And I know you've been doing a lot of traveling
- 2:53around the state, as have all the incubernatorial candidates. When you go and
- 2:57but when you go out to speak more to a group of people and you
- 3:00can name the group or the community. Knowing that the Republican voters are faced
- 3:05with a tough decision come next May yourself, Attorney General Patrick Morrissey, Chris
- 3:09Miller, Secretary of Saint Mike Warner, what do you what do you tell
- 3:15those voters that you hope to accomplish if elect a governor because they've got a
- 3:19choice to make. They've got some good Republicans running there. You probably admit
- 3:23that as well. What do you tell them? Well, let me start
- 3:24by saying that the first thing we do any place we go is listen.
- 3:29You had asked me what I would sort of talk to them about. I
- 3:32sort of prefer to lead with my ears. As you know, we talk
- 3:36about this all the time on your show and we've done it throughout the campaign,
- 3:42that I'm to get it done conservative in this race. And what that
- 3:45means is for the people of West Virginia, this is about having somebody as
- 3:50their next leader that has a proven track record of getting things done that have
- 3:54really moved the needle. When you look at where we are as a state
- 3:58in West Virginia, We've got really great momentum. We've turned massive budget deficits
- 4:03into surpluses. We've been able to pass the largest tax relief package in the
- 4:11history of the state of West Virginia. As chairman of the Judiciary Committee,
- 4:15I was at the tip of the spear in passing the most conservative agenda in
- 4:18the history of the state. So really the difference is when the people of
- 4:24West Virginia look at the choices that they have, is do we want somebody
- 4:30that has the energy and the grit and the record of bringing people together,
- 4:33building consensus and delivering to solve the issues that make all of our community stronger.
- 4:42You said, you go out more and you listen to people. Okay,
- 4:46that's always That's always a good thing to do. What are they telling
- 4:49you at the end of the day, Dave, I think you know,
- 4:54West Virginia is such a special place. No matter where you go, whether
- 5:00you're in southern West Virginia or you're in along the Ohio Valley or in the
- 5:05Northern Panhand or the Eastern Panhand or somewhere in between. People have their regional
- 5:12concerns, regional successes, regional struggles, of course, but there is this
- 5:17underpinning that we have in West Virginia, this sort of community and cultural and
- 5:23family value system that runs through our bloodline here in West Virginia. And as
- 5:30a lifelong West Virginia and as a father of two children, I can tell
- 5:35you that many of the concerns and many of the things that I want to
- 5:40see in West Virginia are similar to those that so many West Virginians want to
- 5:45see. We want good roads to be able to travel to and from a
- 5:49good paying job. We want good educational opportunities for our children so that they
- 5:56can have the opportunity to make the choice someday to stay in West Virginia.
- 6:00As I mentioned, I've got two young kids, and I want them to
- 6:02just have a choice. I want them to have a choice when they're looking
- 6:05at what to do and where to raise their families, that they can look
- 6:09at West Virginia and say, I have every opportunity right here. And if
- 6:13we give them that opportunity, I'm fully confident that they'll make the choice to
- 6:16stay. Because we want to be around our family, We want to have
- 6:21the safest communities in the country. Dave, I talk about this all the
- 6:26time. We have the opportunity and a sticky proposition here in West Virginia with
- 6:31low cost of living, low density housing. You want to live in the
- 6:35mountains, you want to live on the water, you want to work with
- 6:38your hands in the office, remote, all of these different options. But
- 6:43we have safe communities here in West Virginia, and we need to double down
- 6:46on that. We need to make sure that our police and our firefighters have
- 6:49the resources that they need because people will come to where there are safe communities
- 6:55because that's where they want to raise their children. Talk about how okay,
- 6:59we talked about how you get people to stay. How do we get people
- 7:01to move into West Virginia because we've got to we can't sustain all these All
- 7:05these things are great that's gone on the legislature from New Core and all these
- 7:10other jobs, but we need people to be willing to move here as well.
- 7:14How do we market West Virginia to look at these people, younger people,
- 7:16which is what we want, you know, to come in. How
- 7:18do we look at them and say, okay, you need to come to
- 7:20West Virginia. May not have ties here, but we need you here.
- 7:24Absolutely. I think it's a great question, you know, Dave, I
- 7:26come from a generation that's been lost in West Virginia and I've stayed and the
- 7:31future of this state is deeply personal to me. And one of the reasons
- 7:36that it's so personal to me is because we need to bridge the gap of
- 7:42that generation that we've lost, and the way that we do that is bring
- 7:45people here to West Virginia. We've started doing that through taking great ideas and
- 7:49turning them into good policy, particularly as it relates to our tax policy.
- 7:55When people look at places where they want to go, they look at the
- 7:58personal income tax. We've low that we have triggers in place to continue to
- 8:01reduce the personal income tax in the state of West Virginia. We have to
- 8:07expand our educational opportunities. Of course, that means providing parents with more choices.
- 8:11That means providing more resources in the classroom for our teachers so that they
- 8:18can continue to inspire our children, lowering that class size so we can have
- 8:22more specialized attention on our students. Those are the things. It's not a
- 8:28complicated structure, but we just have to make sure that the structure is in
- 8:33place to support that growth. And we have to go out and tell our
- 8:37story. I mean, I'm a guy that goes out every day and talks
- 8:41about how incredible this place that we have is. We have so many opportunities
- 8:46here and outside of all of the things that I just mentioned, we have
- 8:50the natural bounty to grow and that's what we need to market. That means
- 8:56our natural resources and our fossil fuels and what sits underneath our feet, but
- 9:01that also means what's above that ground. The beautiful trees, the water,
- 9:05the mountains, all of these things are what people are looking for. Space
- 9:09to move around, places to recreate. All of those things. We need
- 9:13to take to the rest of the country and to the rest of the world,
- 9:16and we're starting to see it as an effective strategy under Governor Justice,
- 9:22He's done a great job and we're ready to take that to the next level.

- 9:39What was your takeaway from the almost hesitate to call it a debate.
- 9:43But the set down that you had in Morgantown with Hoppy a couple of weeks
- 9:46ago, yourself and Mac Warner and Chris Miller are taking part in that.
- 9:50Attorney General Patrick Morrissey was not. What was your takeaway from that and were
- 9:52you bothered by the fact that Patrick Morrisey wasn't there. This was the biggest
- 9:56you know, this is the biggest interview that I think any of the candidates
- 10:01will will endeavor to take on, at least to this point. And I
- 10:05say interview because it's an opportunity for West Virginians to get to know the person
- 10:11that they want to lead this state. Last week, when we sat down,
- 10:18how to sit down? That makes me sound like when I was like
- 10:20a kid, I was in trouble. I sit down, But yeah,
- 10:24I got called up. UH it was. It was a great environment to
- 10:30be able to discuss important issues that are facing UH West Virginians. We felt
- 10:35very good about how it went. Obviously, we talked about our plan to
- 10:41increase educational opportunities. We talked about our plan to build UH more infrastructure and
- 10:46better opportunities for the communities that need that critical infrastructure. We talked about UH
- 10:52taxes and all sorts of things. And again this is an interview, and
- 10:56so the more opportunities that the people of West Virginia have to get to know
- 11:01us, the better. But what I can tell you is, having driven
- 11:03sixty thousand miles plus over the course of this campaign, we are showing up
- 11:09to every community, driving to every community because we want to be able to
- 11:13talk to the voters face to face and know what's going on in their lives
- 11:18and at their kitchen tables. Because I can tell you I have a kitchen
- 11:22table at home and we talk about what's going on in our lives, and
- 11:24I want to know what's going on in all West Virginians live. You know
- 11:28more. West Virginia is doing pretty well right now, but it's not perfect.
- 11:33A very very very broad question here, but do you have a plan
- 11:37or a plan of attack when it comes to some of these problems with like
- 11:39DHHR and corrections and nopioids. I know you can't answer that with ninety seconds,
- 11:45but I mean, do you have a basic idea of how you start
- 11:48if you're like to governor on day one on how to address some of these
- 11:50wells has to get it done? Conservative it's all about number one, listening,
- 11:54it's bringing people together, and then it's executing on a plan. You
- 11:58talked about places in the state that probably aren't feeling as good. We've had
- 12:01some good wins, as you mentioned with newcre and Procter and Gamble and some
- 12:05of the investments we've seen around the state. We have to focus on what
- 12:09the problems are regionally and what the needs are for growth. When you go
- 12:13to southern West Virginia, we have to we have to continue to build on
- 12:16some of our roadways down there. We know on the Gorge, for instance,
- 12:20we need some of our critical infrastructure like sewage and water. When you
- 12:24go to the eastern Panhandle, we need more. We need to widen our
- 12:26roads so we can sort of relieve the traffic that's up there with the growth
- 12:31that we're seeing in that part of the world. Some of the broadband spots
- 12:35that we're seeing that are blanks still need filled in. So these are regional
- 12:39issues and I can talk about it because I've been there, and that's exactly
- 12:43what we're going to do. We're going to look at each part of West
- 12:46Virginia as as a unique opportunity to build because we have so much to offer,
- 12:52and I'm committed to telling that story. What makes more Capital the best
- 12:58candidate for the next governor West Virginian? And you kind of touched on it
- 13:01a little bit early, but I'm maybe give another chance to close it out
- 13:03with this, just as as you're plead to the people of West Virginia,
- 13:05they're going to be facing in this Republican primary, you know yourself and three
- 13:11others, and of course there's also another Republican, there's a Libertarian. It's
- 13:16going to be in and get her scheduled at some point. What makes more
- 13:20Capital the best of the bunch, Thanks Dave. I'm a West Virginian for
- 13:24West Virginia. I'm a lifelong West Virginia. I'm the father of two children.
- 13:28I'm living what so many West Virginians are living right now, trying to
- 13:33raise a family right here, trying to bring young people to West Virginia,
- 13:39trying to grow an economy where we have new opportunities, where we sustain the
- 13:45opportunities that we have, and where we create a twenty first century hub for
- 13:50new opportunities so people can live, work, raise a family, and ultimately
- 13:56retire in this beautiful place that we all call home. I'm someone that has
- 14:01gotten it done. I'm going to get it done conservative, I will continue
- 14:03to get it done because I've gotten it done. The elegant and Canda forgot
- 14:07it the more capital. I appreciate you being here. Where can people learn

- 18:07maybe said it somewhere else. Bringing Allen Allen for West Virginia's for affordable healthcare,
- 18:11Allen, no relation, Good morning, welcome to the show. I'm
- 18:15great. You never know you know you have any ties to southern West Virginia
- 18:19and all you've ever been. I grew up in Mercer County. Okay,
- 18:22well that's really southern West Virginia. That's more southern than Logan County it is.
- 18:27How'd you end up here? If you don't mind my asking. I
- 18:30fell in love and came to work here, and I've been here in April
- 18:33b fourteen years. Okay, yeah, all right, where else have you
- 18:36been? I grew up in Mercer County, spent a lot of time in
- 18:40Louisbourg, Love Greenberg County. It's beautiful mating, lovely, really great friends,
- 18:45and that's where I shifted to really wanting to spend my work in the
- 18:48nonprofit sector. So it's been really good. Well, welcome here because you
- 18:52do some good, great things here. And a happy holiday season as well
- 18:55to you. Happy winster. Oh yeah it is. I've a dark at
- 18:59three o'clock. Well, I think I said winter officially kicks in like at
- 19:03ten o'clock tonight. Yeah, I'll be asleep. I want to see it.
- 19:07You wanted to come on all to talk about this new law that many
- 19:11may not know about. And again I got information in front of me.
- 19:15But if I get anything wrong, jump in and correct me. That it
- 19:18caps out of pocket cost for insulin at thirty five dollars a month as I
- 19:23understand it, and various other diabetic supplies at one hundred dollars a month.
- 19:27Now the law kicks in January first, Is that right? That's correct?
- 19:30Talk about the road to get to this point. Yeah, I'm glad you
- 19:34put it that way, because you know it has been a long road.
- 19:37You know, many people organizations started working on nationally, and you know it
- 19:42was kept for Medicare, but you know West Virginians wanted to do more for
- 19:47West Virginians, right, So it kind of started in Barbara Flyshower got this
- 19:52group of West Virginians together to highlight the cost, the crazy cost of insulin.
- 19:57She took a bustlet of people to Canada to buy insulin at a fraction
- 20:02of the cost of what it is in the state. So that really kicked
- 20:04off a big educational piece, and then many afacy organizations worked with legislators and
- 20:11Senate Bill five seventy seven was pasted and it'll become effective January first, and
- 20:17it is a big deal. I mean, cappying insulin costs at thirty five
- 20:21dollars a month, and a key piece of that is an aggregate cost because
- 20:23as I understand and this is this is something I learned that's going to new
- 20:27is many diabetics may take more than one type of insulin, so it doesn't
- 20:33camp it for like each insulin. It's aggregate. So well that means is
- 20:37if they take two or three, that still still thirty five dollars a month
- 20:41a month. Yeah. Now, and we're leading the country and there's some
- 20:45other states you're doing that I think maybe five, but they're capping it at
- 20:48one hundred dollars a month, so we're cappying it at thirty five. So
- 20:52it's I think that's such a big achievement for West Virginia's I mean, we
- 20:56leave the country and the rate of diabetes, I think two hundred and forty
- 20:59thousand West Virginians have it. We also know we don't have great data on
- 21:03children and youth as far as diabetes concerned, but we do know it's another
- 21:07area where West Virginians lead the nation and youth obesity and being a wait,
- 21:14something like thirty five point five percent of West Virginia youth are either in the
- 21:18obese or overweight categorgory, which leads to pre diabetes, which leads to diabetes.
- 21:23So this kind have a significant impact on the income and family households.
- 21:30We all know we need to have health care. Affordable healthcare doesn't help to
- 21:33have it if you can't afford it, right, So this is a big
- 21:37deal. We're really excited about it. And again this went through the legislature
- 21:41and without much of a hitch, right, So, I mean, so
- 21:45this took people, Republicans and Democrats working together on this. I'm glad you
- 21:51brought that up too, because I think there's a misconception. There's a lot
- 21:53of consensus around getting healthcare to West Virginians. We see both parties working hard
- 22:00to make sure all West Virginians have access to healthcare, and I, you
- 22:03know, I look for us to continue to work to make that better every
- 22:07every day, every year. In our work again, we're talking with Ellen

- 22:37has sort of an educational campaign going on to tell folks about this. Uh
- 22:41So it's a big part of it. I mean, it doesn't do any
- 22:44good to have this law passed and put this in effective. People don't know
- 22:48about it. So you're appearing on shows like this and doing you know,
- 22:51radio and television and so on, and so we're trying to trying to get
- 22:56the word out talking about that. Yeah, we're like getting radios, you
- 22:59know ready doing up eds. We have a beautiful package of social media graphics
- 23:07that we've shared free with the public, and that's getting We're seeing that circulating
- 23:11around you Facebook and Instagram. And it's really interesting too because I looked at
- 23:15the comments under one of the graphics and somebody said, well, that would
- 23:19be great if that were true, And I often don't comment by me.
- 23:23I said, this is true. It's truly And I know that's important because
- 23:26I know when we passed a Medicaid expansion under the ACA, and I was
- 23:30working at Covenant House then and we signed up over three hundred people who never
- 23:36had healthcare in their life, and they didn't believe us until that card came
- 23:38in. So this is real. If you're rashing, here's what I'd like
- 23:41people to hear. If you're rationing your insulin because you have to make it
- 23:45last longer, that means I know you aren't feeling well. You're actually it
- 23:49could be endanger in your life if depending on how you're rationing it. You
- 23:53no longer have to do that. Effective January one, when you go to
- 23:57your pharmacist, you're going to be capped at thirty five dollars a month.
- 24:02So please believe it. It's true. And the cost of health care in
- 24:08America, I mean, and this is not anything that we're kind of geting
- 24:12all subject here a little bit, but the cost of health care. I
- 24:15mean, a simple health flight if you're you know, Heaven forbidden in a
- 24:19car accident. You know, no matter what the medication is that you need,
- 24:25getting beyond diabetes anything else. I mean, it's really really through the
- 24:29roof. It's through the roof, and it just gets worse every year and
- 24:32outpaces inflation every single year. And how did we get to that position?
- 24:36Though? I mean, look, you know, people know me to listen
- 24:38to show all the time. I always say I'm the ultimate capitalist, and
- 24:41I get that, and I understand that, But how did we get to
- 24:44this point Ellen that it is so dang expensive for this stuff? Well,
- 24:52I think, and you know, I'm I come from the capitalist sector sector
- 24:55too, and I'm not opposed to that, but I think we've gone so
- 25:00far in a profit margin versus looking at okay, how can we not how
- 25:08can we have healthcare? Whether it's drugs and therapies that bring enough profit to
- 25:17keep people inventing, researching new therapies, new drugs, but also that makes
- 25:22it affordable. I mean it's their record profits and pharmaceutical industries. They have
- 25:26the strongest lobbyists of any lobbyist. So that's how I think we see a
- 25:33lot of these drugs continuing to increase. It wasn't until recently that could even
- 25:37negotiate drug prices on Medicare. I mean, what's more American than negotiating on
- 25:44anything? Right, Why shouldn't we be able to negotiate on behalfs of tens
- 25:48of millions of Americans? They're drug prices. We can make drugs affordable and
- 25:52people, organizations corporations can make a profit too, And that's how it should
- 25:57be. But you know, maybe it has to be reeled in a little
- 26:00bit where it's affordable for everybody and worth their while to do the work.
- 26:07That's a good point because when you go to buy an audiblebile, you know
- 26:10you don't most people don't look at the sticker price and go okay, I'll
- 26:12take it. There's a little bit of negotiation, you know, back and
- 26:17forth and so on and so forth. I know that you spend your time
- 26:19in advocacy, Ellen, but and maybe the guinness is something that's a little
- 26:23bit out of out out of your ballpark, certainly out of mind. But
- 26:27how how do we get people not to have to rely so much on diabetic
- 26:33medications? I mean, I know you're about affordable health care, but a
- 26:37lot of this is is preventable. So much of it is preventable. I
- 26:41mean, is there is there an education aspect? I mean, people know
- 26:45what they eat and what they do is bad. But how do we try
- 26:48to go about fixing this? I guess I should. There's a lot of
- 26:51people working hard on this, and a lot of foundations that are supporting organizations
- 26:56even around oral health and how that can ear early in life contribute to a
- 27:02chance of becoming a diabetic. So you know, activity, good nutrition,
- 27:07you know, despite that, some people still do get diabetes later in life.
- 27:14So you know, it's a combination of how we eat, how we
- 27:18move. It's all kind of wrapped up. But that doesn't always mean you
- 27:23won't become diabetic. It certainly does. Wait control genetics and genetics. But
- 27:29the best thing we can do is move, eat well and hopefully have a
- 27:34genetic predisposition that you're less likely to get that. So let's kind of review
- 27:40just a little bit. So what you're saying is is the effect of January.
- 27:42First, these diabetes medications have been capped at thirty five dollars, and
- 27:48it doesn't matter whether you're on one or two or three, it's still capped
- 27:52at thirty five dollars. And a lot of the other supplies that go along
- 27:53with your capped as well. Yes, and they're capped at one hundred,
- 27:56so the supplies that go with that. Is there a place online where people
- 28:00could go and learn more? Do you have this information available on your website

- 33:25Lance Wheeler's here, Cannan County Commissioner. How are you, sir?
- 33:29Doing well? How are you doing day? I am doing fine. Thank
- 33:30you for being here. I hope you're having a wonderful Christmas season so far
- 33:37as I channel my enter Paul McCartney there, I hope you're having a great,
- 33:39wonderful, wonderful Christmas time. Well, you know, as a native
- 33:42of Kennell County, I don't think I've seen the Christmas spirit here in Kennall
- 33:45County this big ever. I mean, there's so many events going on,
- 33:49there's so many things. People are putting lights in their houses. This is
- 33:52something that we didn't see a couple of years ago. So, I mean,
- 33:54this is just absolutely wonderful. Let's talk about some of these things going
- 33:58on. I mean, you know, you get to Holly Jolly Brawley and
- 34:00you've got what's going on over there at the at Gomart Ballpark with the Slangle
- 34:06Law light the night. It's a it's a pretty festive place here. The
- 34:09Kanah Valley Commissioner. Yeah, I mean there's events going on everywhere. Big
- 34:14kudos to Mayor Goodwin and her team. I think they've done an excellent job
- 34:17there on Capitol Street and Slack Plaza putting all these events together. You know,
- 34:22my wife and our two year old daughter, we've been able to experience
- 34:24some of those events, you know, with her, and to have that
- 34:29opportunity here in this community, I think it's just fabulous. You know.
- 34:31I saw a report recently that Kanawha County Commission is going to be updating their
- 34:37emergency radio systems. So so talk about that. Yeah, this is the
- 34:42why is it needed? Well, it's it's absolutely needed. And this is
- 34:45the discussions that are always boring to some people, right, but it's important,
- 34:49you know. So it's it's only boring until it happens to you,
- 34:52exactly and you're in then then deciddenly becomes important, but exactly, and so
- 34:57Kanal County is actually in a very special place to the fact that we own
- 35:00seven of our radio towers here in the county for our EMS and metronomal one.
- 35:06That's important because a lot of counties and other areas, even outside the
- 35:09state, they lease these towers and they pay a monthly fee every month.
- 35:14It gets very expensive. So the Kenaal County Commission bought these towers and we
- 35:19own them. However, as you know, when you own something, you're
- 35:22responsible for the operation of maintenance, and we're getting to that point now where
- 35:27we need to have those discussions. These towers were built back in the nineteen
- 35:30seventies and some things don't last forever. No, and some of your listeners
- 35:34might be looking at their cell phone right now and going, you know,
- 35:37this phone's not being as fast as it once was just a couple of years
- 35:40ago. Well, imagine this technology. So the Canaal kunt Of Commission,
- 35:44through our Emergency Management and Metronomum one, we got staff to look into our
- 35:49towers and how we can upgrade them be state of the art. We were
- 35:52in touch with a company called Xtron, and essentially, in Layman's terms,
- 35:57this is digitizing these towers, making them more efficient and making them cleaner,
- 36:01and also being able to expand the range that they can have for our first
- 36:07responders who are trying to communicate with each other, communicate with Metro namb one
- 36:10are you know, telecommunicators trying to dispatch these These conversations that they have are
- 36:16very vital in that it's seconds matter, and we need to make sure these
- 36:21messages are clear, that you can hear them over a radio. I mean,
- 36:24Dave, you've probably listened to a scanner before, and sometimes they come
- 36:28mumbled and it's it's it's reverb and it's it's difficult to hear. They struggle
- 36:34with that here in Kanall County, and we want to make sure that we
- 36:36do something that we can improve. Xetron's telling us that they can make these
- 36:40the voice clear, they can make these messages clear, and that we can
- 36:44actually expand the range in some of these what us West Virginia's called hallers.
- 36:50Indeed, And I don't think sometimes people realize how big of a county Kanaha
- 36:54County is. I mean it's I mean geographically speaking, I mean you go
- 37:00from you know, Campbell's Creek to Saint Albans too. I mean it's it's
- 37:04a pretty down through mar mattin that way. It's a pretty big county.
- 37:07Well, you know, and z Tron, who we've hired as our consultants
- 37:09for this. They said the same thing. They said, you know,
- 37:12you are in a very special topography in the fact that you have very urban
- 37:15cities like Saint Albans Charleston, you know, but you also have these royal
- 37:21areas with this, you know, these mountains and these valleys, and so
- 37:24we have to be very precise of where these towers are, what type of
- 37:29bandwidth they're producing, and making sure that we're able to not just get clear
- 37:31messages on the streets of Charleston for our police departments, fire departments, but
- 37:37also being able to have the range to go into a valley where there's you
- 37:40know, a little haller of three houses, and you know, this is
- 37:44how it all started. Our volunteer fire departments came to us and said,
- 37:46hey, we're running some fire calls and we can't hear Metro. They can
- 37:51hear us, but we can't hear them, and that's dangerous right there.
- 37:54We don't want a situation where they're calling for backup because the fire is out
- 37:58of control, but met nine one one can't hear them. Those are now
- 38:01those are very small meniscal areas, but we don't want those happen at all.
- 38:06So what we're told is that with this new stated art technology of upgrading
- 38:09our radio towers, we're going to be able to expand that out and actually
- 38:14be able to make sure that those calls are coming in. What kind of
- 38:16timeline are we looking at for this Commissioner, Well, so this is going
- 38:20to be eighteen months the knin kunt of commission Mentioner car Purslango myself. We're
- 38:24still discussing it. You know, the biggest issue here, and it's always
- 38:28the bigger issue with a project, is the price tag. You know,
- 38:30we're told that over five years this is going to cost us three million dollars.
- 38:34That's a lot of money. We need to figure out where that money
- 38:37is going to come from. My suggestion would be our public safety grant money,
- 38:40which we have that money because the voters have year in, year out
- 38:45voted for our special levy that we use to go just to first responders.
- 38:50But we can maybe use that money to make the initial payments. But this
- 38:53is a project that we have to do because right now we're lucky. You
- 38:58know, ninety nine percent of the calls coming in have been clear, but
- 39:00it's that one percent that we're worried about and we don't want to put any
- 39:04of our first responders in a situation where they're in they're in danger and we
- 39:08can't communicate with them that one percent means may not in a big picture of
- 39:12things, Commissioner, seem like a lot, But when it's your grandmother,
- 39:15when it's your kid, it's a totally different story. When it's your when
- 39:19it's your your brother who's a police officer, when it's your uncle who is
- 39:22a fire department in the fire department, you know, it's more. It's
- 39:25very important that we make sure these conversations are had through nine one one.
- 39:29But making sure that the first responders hear the message, they understand it,
- 39:32and they can call in for backup if they needed. That's what's important for
- 39:37this and this is why we have put so much effort into looking into this,
- 39:40and I think that this is something that we need to do. You
- 39:44know, unfortunately that price tag is high. But if we don't do this
- 39:46now, what happens next year when a call can't be made through metronymal one
- 39:52and somebody gets hurt or even worse death. Yeah, talking to an ANAY
- 39:55Commissioner Lance Wheeler, it's about thirteen minutes now before ten o'clock. Commissioner,
- 40:00it's the Christmas weekend. Well, we're from the looks of my drive in
- 40:06from Day's Valley this morning, I think some people are already off because there
- 40:08was in the heck of a lot of traffic out this morning. It's only
- 40:10going to increase. But that means there's more I mean by that, I
- 40:14mean there's always many people going to work. They're still going to be out
- 40:15on the roads, of course, and the way the calendar falls this year
- 40:19over the weekend kind of can lead us some problems. You got more police
- 40:22presence out on the road, So talk about talk about our police out there.
- 40:24I know it's that's something this big interest to you. Yeah, just
- 40:28the other day I was having a conversation with our Kennell County Sheriff's Department with
- 40:31Mike Rutherford and Joey Crawford, the chief, and I wanted to make sure
- 40:35that we were as we have always done year and in year out, making
- 40:37sure we have extra presence of deputies on the streets during these holiday season.
- 40:44They tell me that it is going to happen. We're going to have five
- 40:46to seven more police officers making sure that there are you know, checking for
- 40:52d wise looking for impair driving. You know, we always encourage everyone to
- 40:57enjoy the Christmas season, you know, enjoy this with family and and have
- 41:00fun. But we also want to make sure everyone knows drink responsible. Don't
- 41:04drink or drive ride with anyone who does. But if you do, we're
- 41:07going to find you and we're going to make sure that you know the full
- 41:10all presence comes to you. And you know, it's important because we want
- 41:15to make sure everyone feels safe this holiday season. You don't want a lot
- 41:17of people are traveling from out of state coming in here. We've talked about
- 41:21this for how many people from West Virginia live out of state and their families
- 41:24have to come in. We want to make sure everyone's safe. So we're
- 41:27going to keep that presence up not just here for Christmas, but for New
- 41:30Year's as well, and just continue to remind everyone please drink responsibily, please
- 41:35be safe, and you know, don't get on the right road if you're
- 41:37impaired. It's not worth it. It's not worth it. Absolutely, you're
- 41:40right about that. A couple of things where we let you go. I
- 41:43know you've been out promoting safety as it comes to Christmas trees. Yeah,
- 41:45this season, commissioner to talk about that, well, I think it's something
- 41:49that we talk about a lot every year, and maybe some people, you
- 41:52know, don't think much about it because it hasn't happened to them, But
- 41:55you know, we want to make sure everyone's safe. This year, I've
- 41:58had so many people come to me and tell me they got to talk about
- 42:00the Christmas spirit, real Christmas trees this year, and that's wonderful. You
- 42:04know, it's great to have a real Christmas tree. It's great to celebrate
- 42:07the holiday season. But you have to remember Christmas trees need water and you
- 42:10have We always say Christmas trees are flammable. A dry Christmas tree is very
- 42:15flammable. So make sure that you're watering that tree every morning, every night.
- 42:21Make sure that you're checking the lights, the wires, they're not frayed
- 42:23from cats or tears. You know, we see about two hundred Christmas tree
- 42:29fires every year in this nation. That doesn't seem like a lot, but
- 42:32don't be one of those two hundred. Make sure you're checking on it.
- 42:36Don't keep a heat source near it. I know this sounds like common sense
- 42:38things, but make sure that you're just being you know, due, diligent
- 42:43and keeping safe this holiday season. As a as a former wives old coal
- 42:46work coworker of mine used to say, if common sense, we're common everyone
- 42:50would have it. Yeah, and so keep that in mind. And one
- 42:52last thing on safety. I know I talked to the Sheriff's apartment and they
- 42:54want to make sure they've been hearing some extra reports of what we call porch
- 42:59pirates. So you know a lot of people are ordering your Christmas presents,
- 43:02especially late right now. I don't know about you, Dave, but I
- 43:05am. But if you get any presents that come on the porch, you
- 43:08know, keep an eye on it, make sure you're picking them up and
- 43:10don't leave them overnight. Look out for your neighbors too. Yeah, let
- 43:13me exactly make sure your neighbors, if d c owning, you know,
- 43:15hide them, make sure they're you know, out of plain view. But
- 43:20you know, just be safe this season. And we're going to continue to
- 43:22keep the presence up with our law enforcement and do everything we can to protect
- 43:25everybody for we let you go, Commission. I want to talk about the
- 43:28year that was twenty twenty three in Kanawa County. Maybe a little preview for
- 43:30twenty twenty four, just talk about it in general, what kind of a
- 43:34year it was for Kanawa County. And there's a lot of growth in the
- 43:37county with businesses and so on and so forth. Talk about that and where
- 43:39do we head in twenty twenty four. Well, I think we've talked to
- 43:43the Secretary of State Mac Warner, and he's told us that there's been more
- 43:45business opening up here in Kannall County than any other county in this state.
- 43:51We also see and that all the major announcements we had, the dirt bike
- 43:53trails out near metal Wood, the Capital City Sports Complex discussion, the Coonskin
- 44:00Park golf course. I mean, these have been huge upgrades. Everything that
- 44:05the City of Charleston has done, including all the other municipalities, the million
- 44:08dollars we've put into the demolition of dilapidated structures. I mean, the list
- 44:13goes on and on the great things that's happened here this year. And you
- 44:16know, I didn't know you were going to ask me that question. I
- 44:17started thinking, there's so much to talk about it. I don't know if
- 44:21I have enough time. But you know, the yeah, Well, and
- 44:23we'll make sure that we're going to continue this progress. And I think there's
- 44:27going to be some pretty big announcements coming up just in January that well,
- 44:30you might want to have you back on to talk about, all right,
- 44:31any preview for us, I'm not allowed to talk about it. So there's
- 44:37a big announcement of some sort covied in January. It's all we know at
- 44:39this point, exactly. You let me know when you want back on,
- 44:43we'll let you talk about it. Lance, I appreciate you being here as
- 44:45always, Commission Lance Wheeler, thanks for being here. I hope you and
