- 0:02Speaker 1: In the spring of 2019, a well-liked and respected trucker
- 0:06Speaker 1: in a small town in West Virginia went missing. In
- 0:10Speaker 1: the days that followed, it seemed that everyone in the
- 0:13Speaker 1: community had a theory. Rumors, speculation, and accusations were rampant.
- 0:20Speaker 1: The investigation navigated a maze of strange clues, finger-pointing, and
- 0:25Speaker 1: colorful characters.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Man, I don't know a freaking thing about this missing guy, dude.
- 0:30Speaker 2: I don't even know. My mom asked me today, well,
- 0:31Speaker 2: how come they're saying?
- 0:33Speaker 1: Until one small and seemingly innocuous lie unraveled the mystery
- 0:38Speaker 1: of this small town murder. Hi there, I'm Kevin and
- 0:48Speaker 1: welcome to Just Thought Lounge. Today's case takes us to
- 0:52Speaker 1: a town of just over 200 people. That setting goes
- 0:56Speaker 1: a long way to explaining how this investigation unfolds. With
- 1:00Speaker 1: no murder scene or weapon, limited physical evidence, and dodgy witnesses,
- 1:05Speaker 1: there were only a few ways this case could have
- 1:07Speaker 1: been solved. When it finally was, the truth was truly horrific.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Let's take a look. Kingwood, West Virginia is a small
- 1:33Speaker 1: community situated within the Allegheny Mountains above the Cheat River Valley.
- 1:38Speaker 1: The town is spread across a large rural area with
- 1:41Speaker 1: less than a thousand families calling the region home. Just
- 1:45Speaker 1: south of Kingwood is the even smaller community of Tunnelton,
- 1:49Speaker 1: which is home to a population of just over 200 people.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Perhaps not surprisingly, Kingwood is a place where many residents
- 1:58Speaker 1: have family connections carried over generations. where neighbors know each other,
- 2:03Speaker 1: and where gossip and rumors travel quickly. At about a
- 2:09Speaker 1: quarter past seven in the morning on Wednesday, May 29th, 2019,
- 2:14Speaker 1: one local resident placed a call to the Preston County
- 2:17Speaker 1: Sheriff's Office about suspected drug activity on Shower Bath Road.
- 2:22Speaker 1: There was a maroon pickup truck parked where the road
- 2:24Speaker 1: first widened past Route 26. The road runs next to
- 2:28Speaker 1: the Cheat River. Later that morning, Deputy Childers pulled up
- 2:33Speaker 1: behind the truck and began to inspect it. The deputy
- 2:46Speaker 1: found the vehicle empty. Dark gray smoke building up in
- 2:49Speaker 1: the interior of the cab made it nearly impossible to
- 2:53Speaker 1: see in. Some of the smoke billowed out from the
- 2:56Speaker 1: passenger side window. no doubt the reason that the caller
- 2:59Speaker 1: had suspected drug use. There was clearly oil or a
- 3:14Speaker 1: similar type of liquid accelerant spilling out from the doors.
- 3:18Speaker 1: In the truck bed were two containers of motor oil,
- 3:20Speaker 1: one of them empty. On the passenger side, there were
- 3:23Speaker 1: notable smudges visible. but there were no hand or finger imprints.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Despite the arsonist's efforts, much of the interior remained intact.
- 3:35Speaker 2: There's a pretty good indication. Gloves, they were wearing gloves
- 3:41Speaker 2: for the palm print here. Keys are out of the ignition.
- 3:48Speaker 2: There's a bear there. The center console's been opened. As
- 3:52Speaker 2: you can see, it smells like an oil. There's a
- 3:56Speaker 2: little all over in the dash, a couple places here.
- 4:01Speaker 1: The deputy was joined by a sergeant and then by
- 4:04Speaker 1: the fire department. Tire tracks emerging from the roadside near
- 4:08Speaker 1: to the pickup suggested another vehicle could have been involved,
- 4:12Speaker 1: perhaps driven away by the arsonist.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Hey, this looks like a.
- 4:18Speaker 4: I don't know if it's fresh, but it comes from
- 4:20Speaker 4: right here on the side of this truck.
- 4:21Speaker 3: There's a.
- 4:24Speaker 2: like a tire tread going out that way.
- 4:29Speaker 1: The pickup was registered to Philip Barlow, a local truck
- 4:33Speaker 1: driver known affectionately as Bucky. Before long, this was further
- 4:38Speaker 1: confirmed when Bucky's nephew, Perry, arrived on scene and told
- 4:42Speaker 1: them that that was his uncle's truck. He placed a
- 4:44Speaker 1: call to Bucky's employer, Hillside Trucking, to check in on him.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Perry learned that Bucky had not arrived for work that
- 4:51Speaker 1: morning and no one had heard from him a highly
- 4:55Speaker 1: unusual circumstance for a trucker who was known for his reliability.
- 5:01Speaker 3: You didn't have any kind of issues?
- 5:03Speaker 2: Not that I'm aware of. Last time I talked to him,
- 5:06Speaker 2: that was his breakfast, which would have been Mother's Day.
- 5:09Speaker 2: He was bitching about his neighbor being an outlaw.
- 5:13Speaker 5: Other than.
- 5:17Speaker 4: That, everything was good.
- 5:19Speaker 3: He married?
- 5:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Called, but he never called or showed up. He said
- 5:22Speaker 2: that's highly unusual.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Anybody he lives with?
- 5:27Speaker 2: Kids? Nobody? His fiancée, girlfriend, whatever you want to call her,
- 5:32Speaker 2: lives in Indiana.
- 5:32Speaker 7: In where?
- 5:35Speaker 2: Indiana.
- 5:35Speaker 6: See, his plan is to retire in September and move
- 5:39Speaker 6: to Indiana.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Philip Bucky Barlow was in fact only weeks away from
- 5:46Speaker 1: a well-deserved retirement. He and Mary Butler, his partner of
- 5:50Speaker 1: over 17 years, had been making preparations for their pending
- 5:53Speaker 1: move out of state. She had moved to Indiana ahead
- 5:56Speaker 1: of him to set up their new home. The circumstances
- 6:00Speaker 1: surrounding the abandoned truck were suspicious. Foul play was certainly
- 6:05Speaker 1: being considered, though Bucky was not known as the type
- 6:08Speaker 1: to make enemies. He was described as a big-hearted man
- 6:12Speaker 1: who loved children and was reportedly shockingly competent on a
- 6:16Speaker 1: pair of roller skates. Indeed, Bucky dedicated many Sundays to
- 6:21Speaker 1: teaching local kids how to skate. He also loved riding
- 6:25Speaker 1: his four-wheeler, camping, and playing with his remote-control cars. Though
- 6:30Speaker 1: he had no children of his own, the 61-year-old was
- 6:34Speaker 1: close with his extended family, including nieces and nephews. He
- 6:38Speaker 1: was one of nine children, though had already suffered the
- 6:41Speaker 1: loss of two siblings. In the local area were two
- 6:45Speaker 1: of his brothers, four sisters, their spouses, and children. None
- 6:49Speaker 1: of his family members had heard from him since he
- 6:52Speaker 1: left his home for work the night before. Mary had
- 6:55Speaker 1: spoken with Bucky while he was preparing to leave at
- 6:57Speaker 1: just before midnight. He was often one of the first
- 7:00Speaker 1: to report in at around 12.15 a.m. That night, Bucky
- 7:06Speaker 1: did not arrive. A missing persons investigation was launched by
- 7:10Speaker 1: the county sheriff's office under the lead of Captain Travis Tichnell.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Officers began by speaking with co-workers at Hillside Trucking.
- 7:19Speaker 4: What's your thoughts about all this? What's your thoughts about
- 7:23Speaker 4: all this?
- 7:23Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 7:25Speaker 8: It was, normally, Bucky's the type of person, and you
- 7:29Speaker 8: have to forgive me, but if a man's going to
- 7:32Speaker 8: make a bad move, he tells everybody. I mean, everybody
- 7:34Speaker 8: knows anything and everything about him. And normally, you can
- 7:38Speaker 8: say in clockwork, he normally shows up between.
- 7:42Speaker 2: 12.15 to around 12.45, he's here.
- 7:47Speaker 8: I noticed he wasn't here last night, and I went
- 7:49Speaker 8: over and asked him if he was coming out later
- 7:52Speaker 8: with the rest of the drivers.
- 7:54Speaker 2: We didn't know.
- 7:55Speaker 4: He wasn't scheduled off or anything.
- 7:56Speaker 2: We didn't know either. Why he didn't show up at all.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Any enemies that he had that you know of? Somebody
- 8:03Speaker 4: he didn't like?
- 8:04Speaker 9: The only person that we knew is his neighbors. You
- 8:08Speaker 9: always heard him talk about fighting with his neighbors.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Who's that? I don't know what his name was. You
- 8:15Speaker 4: don't know his name?
- 8:16Speaker 9: It's our daytime mechanic. It's his nephew. I don't know
- 8:21Speaker 9: what his name is.
- 8:26Speaker 1: As the search commenced, Mary traveled from Illinois to the
- 8:29Speaker 1: home she shared with Bucky on No. 4 Road, south
- 8:32Speaker 1: of Kingwood in the even smaller town of Tunnelton. Deputies
- 8:37Speaker 1: with the assistance of the community searched the area where
- 8:40Speaker 1: the truck had been found for any indication of a
- 8:42Speaker 1: pathway towards the river or any additional evidence that might
- 8:46Speaker 1: indicate where they could find Bucky. Family members and friends
- 8:50Speaker 1: walked the length of the river where the train allowed,
- 8:53Speaker 1: hoping to spot something.
- 8:56Speaker 2: My brother said he'd seen something floating in the river
- 8:58Speaker 2: this morning, and he's got a bunch of the rafters
- 9:01Speaker 2: out looking to shoot the.
- 9:03Speaker 3: River right now.
- 9:03Speaker 5: Okay.
- 9:05Speaker 2: But we're just thinking the same thing you're thinking. If
- 9:07Speaker 2: the truck burned up on this road, if anybody went
- 9:10Speaker 2: in this water, I mean, they would still up at
- 9:12Speaker 2: the bottom.
- 9:13Speaker 1: As the only source of controversy in the trucker's life
- 9:16Speaker 1: appeared to be an ambiguous dispute with one of his neighbors,
- 9:20Speaker 1: deputies were keen to conduct a canvas of the area.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Directly next to his house was the home of Laura
- 9:27Speaker 1: Martin and Robert Bobby Quinn.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Well, the reason I'm stopping is your neighbor there. I
- 9:33Speaker 2: wonder if you happen to know when he left or
- 9:35Speaker 2: did you see him leave?
- 9:37Speaker 7: No, they were stopped down along the road.
- 9:41Speaker 3: I was with my granddad.
- 9:42Speaker 7: Well, it's my grandma's husband and my bodyguard's little granddad,
- 9:45Speaker 7: but I can't remember. Anyway, on my way back, my
- 9:48Speaker 7: neighbor over here, Greg, And he was asking if our
- 9:54Speaker 7: cameras would stop running, which we have to have internet
- 9:56Speaker 7: and we don't. And I told him no. What was
- 9:59Speaker 7: going on? And he said he couldn't find Bucky. Well,
- 10:02Speaker 7: I mean, you can ask these guys. It's high and
- 10:06Speaker 7: by and I don't know anybody's name.
- 10:08Speaker 2: It's really English.
- 10:09Speaker 7: And I was like, who's Bucky?
- 10:11Speaker 3: And he said, your neighbor lives in the trailer.
- 10:13Speaker 2: I said, what do you mean? You can't find him.
- 10:16Speaker 2: You don't hear when he leaves or anything. I know
- 10:18Speaker 2: it's early.
- 10:18Speaker 3: In the morning.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Laura explained that they were in bed early the night before.
- 10:29Speaker 1: With appliances running inside the house, like their washer-dryer, they
- 10:33Speaker 1: could not hear anything that might have taken place outside. Unfortunately,
- 10:38Speaker 1: the couple were of no help to investigators. Laura and
- 10:43Speaker 1: Quinn were not the only neighbors in the immediate vicinity.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Bucky's property also connected with land occupied by a man
- 10:50Speaker 1: named Craig McLeod. The more neighbors the police spoke with,
- 10:55Speaker 1: the more they heard the same rumors and allegations. That
- 10:58Speaker 1: Craig McLeod and his friend, a man named Chris Thorne,
- 11:03Speaker 1: must be responsible for Bucky's disappearance.
- 11:07Speaker 8: Craig McLeod's wife said he'd had a phone out with
- 11:10Speaker 8: Chris Thorne the night before.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Last night, yeah.
- 11:14Speaker 4: And, uh, I'm reaching out.
- 11:20Speaker 2: To you.
- 11:24Speaker 4: I'm reaching out to you.
- 11:25Speaker 10: Like I said, you've always given me good information whether
- 11:27Speaker 10: you were in the right or whether you were in
- 11:28Speaker 10: the wrong. I don't think that you have any involvement
- 11:31Speaker 10: with it.
- 11:32Speaker 2: I don't.
- 11:33Speaker 10: But I figured of all people to talk to, you'd
- 11:37Speaker 10: be a good one to reach out to.
- 11:38Speaker 2: What's your guts telling you?
- 11:40Speaker 11: Why?
- 11:45Speaker 4: Because they're always together.
- 11:46Speaker 2: They're always running together. And I think.
- 11:48Speaker 4: McLeod's the fall guy for Chris. You think what? He's
- 11:51Speaker 4: the fall guy. What do you mean the fall guy?
- 11:52Speaker 12: For Chris.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Whenever shit hits the fan for him, you know, he's
- 11:56Speaker 2: going to use McLeod.
- 11:56Speaker 4: As the fall guy. So you think, who do you
- 12:00Speaker 4: think had the problem with the man?
- 12:01Speaker 2: Who? McLeod.
- 12:03Speaker 4: You think McLeod had the problem? And what do you
- 12:05Speaker 4: think would happen from there?
- 12:07Speaker 2: I know he was going to take a golf club
- 12:08Speaker 2: to me.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Local gossip led police to a woman named Rebecca, who
- 12:14Speaker 1: was Craig's ex-girlfriend. Their breakup may have been the source
- 12:17Speaker 1: of the conflict between Craig and Bucky.
- 12:19Speaker 4: You said you got a message from your sister?
- 12:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Who's your sister?
- 12:23Speaker 3: Elizabeth McLeod.
- 12:25Speaker 4: How is she and McLeod?
- 12:26Speaker 3: She's married to Craig's nephew, Keith. Well, the message she
- 12:29Speaker 3: sent me was one she forwarded that Craig had sent her.
- 12:34Speaker 3: I used to date Craig, and I guess where Bucky
- 12:37Speaker 3: lives is like a neighbor to where me and Craig
- 12:41Speaker 3: used to stay. Craig was setting my stuff up in
- 12:44Speaker 3: Bucky's property.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Say what?
- 12:46Speaker 3: He was setting my stuff up on Bucky's property.
- 12:49Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 12:50Speaker 3: When we broke up and he.
- 12:52Speaker 4: He put your stuff on Bucky's property?
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Bucky thought it was trash he was setting up there.
- 12:59Speaker 3: So Bucky came out and was asking him to move
- 13:03Speaker 3: his stuff. And Craig apparently messaged my sister forward to me.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Craig was saying that he was going to go beat
- 13:12Speaker 3: Bucky with the golf club for touching my stuff. And
- 13:16Speaker 3: I didn't, I didn't know.
- 13:17Speaker 2: When was this?
- 13:19Speaker 3: My sister just forwarded the message to me today, but
- 13:21Speaker 3: it would have been the day before Bucky went missing
- 13:24Speaker 3: that Craig and him got into an argument and he
- 13:27Speaker 3: was supposed to beat him with the golf club or
- 13:30Speaker 3: whatever he, chase him with the golf club or however
- 13:32Speaker 3: it was.
- 13:32Speaker 4: I told her that you met.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I never even met Bucky before. Like, and then
- 13:39Speaker 3: I heard where he was missing and And then my
- 13:43Speaker 3: sister told me that, and I'm like, it kind of
- 13:46Speaker 3: seemed weird that Craig said he was going to chase
- 13:49Speaker 3: him to the golf club or hit him at the
- 13:50Speaker 3: golf club, and then he's missing.
- 13:54Speaker 1: As the rumors made their rounds, additional details made their
- 13:57Speaker 1: way into the narrative. Some people had heard that Bucky
- 14:01Speaker 1: had been killed somewhere near a place known as The
- 14:04Speaker 1: Caves across from River Road. His killers were described as
- 14:08Speaker 1: methed out. They had likely dumped him in the river,
- 14:12Speaker 1: some said. Still, others had heard an even more gruesome tale.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Someone known as Turtle was allegedly contacted by Chris the
- 14:22Speaker 1: day after Bucky went missing. He allegedly wanted to know
- 14:26Speaker 1: about borrowing his grinder. Those who caught wind of that
- 14:30Speaker 1: story surmised that Bucky was now in pieces, buried in
- 14:35Speaker 1: different locations across the county.
- 14:39Speaker 13: What I was told was that somebody came here and
- 14:43Speaker 13: told me that a storm got a hold of them
- 14:45Speaker 13: and wanted them to help him.
- 14:51Speaker 4: Who are they? He took a.
- 14:52Speaker 12: Golf club and hit the guy in the head. He
- 14:56Speaker 12: didn't intend to kill the guy. And he chopped him
- 15:03Speaker 12: up and put him in different places. Who told you that?
- 15:07Speaker 4: Somebody out of Tennessee.
- 15:09Speaker 11: One of those rumors, except for, okay, well, Turtle, he
- 15:14Speaker 11: told me that the day that he.
- 15:17Speaker 14: Supposedly murdered Chris Thorne, they called him and asked him
- 15:21Speaker 14: to use his grinder. I didn't think not always, I
- 15:26Speaker 14: told him no, because, you know, I'm trusting he uses
- 15:29Speaker 14: his teeth and everything else.
- 15:30Speaker 11: But now he thinks he knows why, because he needed
- 15:34Speaker 11: help with that.
- 15:35Speaker 15: And then he's telling me, Then later on, he told
- 15:37Speaker 15: him that he hit him with a golf club in
- 15:39Speaker 15: the back of the head, or in the head, somewhere
- 15:41Speaker 15: in the head, and that she didn't mean to kill him,
- 15:45Speaker 15: that he hit him.
- 15:46Speaker 11: To knock him out, and it killed him. I mean,
- 15:49Speaker 11: I heard stuff, you know, rumors, but I don't know
- 15:52Speaker 11: nothing for a fact.
- 15:53Speaker 15: All I know is that Turtle said, hey, he called
- 15:55Speaker 15: me one of those bars, grinder, or something.
- 15:59Speaker 5: Okay.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Called you on your cell phone, and how did the
- 16:05Speaker 3: conversation start?
- 16:06Speaker 2: Well, you know you did it, right?
- 16:09Speaker 3: That's what she said. And did you know who she
- 16:12Speaker 3: was talking about?
- 16:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:13Speaker 3: How do you know who she's talking about?
- 16:17Speaker 4: Because Chris is dirty.
- 16:19Speaker 11: Okay.
- 16:21Speaker 16: Well, when I first heard or seen her, you know,
- 16:25Speaker 16: read about her or whatever, the first person I thought
- 16:27Speaker 16: of was Craig McLeod.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Because he never bought a lot.
- 16:31Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 16:32Speaker 4: Nobody else, though? No. Well, Chris and Debbie.
- 16:37Speaker 12: As the rumors continued, other names were thrown.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Into the.
- 16:46Speaker 11: Mix. Chris's wife, Debbie, was amongst those implicated.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Almost every witness approached by police prefaced their information by
- 17:10Speaker 1: stating they had heard only rumors, not facts. Nonetheless, as
- 17:15Speaker 1: more and more individuals reached the same conclusion, a confidence
- 17:19Speaker 1: developed around these allegations, an unsupported yet unflinching certainty that
- 17:25Speaker 1: many in the community knew what must have happened to
- 17:28Speaker 1: Bucky Barlow.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Like five guys jumped Chris yesterday trying to blame him
- 17:33Speaker 3: for shit I.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Never get to hear.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Like what?
- 17:35Speaker 3: I don't know something about some guy missing in a truck.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Hold on.
- 17:40Speaker 5: The guy's name is Bob Barlow. And I guess he's
- 17:45Speaker 5: an older man and he's missing.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Okay. So after this.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Guy picked up a tire, he picked up a, what's
- 17:51Speaker 5: it called? A floor jack and hit my husband across
- 17:54Speaker 5: the face with it.
- 17:56Speaker 4: That was today?
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yes.
- 17:58Speaker 4: So why do you think that Robbie Wiles hit Chris
- 18:01Speaker 4: with a floor jack?
- 18:03Speaker 2: I have no clue. Oh, no, I do have a point.
- 18:07Speaker 5: Chris was at one of our friends, and they were
- 18:09Speaker 5: working on their truck, and some boy named Hunter said
- 18:11Speaker 5: that my husband killed somebody.
- 18:13Speaker 3: My husband did not kill anybody.
- 18:15Speaker 2: That's funny.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Independent efforts were made to obtain confessions from the community's
- 18:22Speaker 1: prime suspects.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Yeah, because I don't like this. I mean, nobody here does,
- 18:26Speaker 2: to be honest with you.
- 18:28Speaker 16: He's the culprit. I'm going to make sure we just stop.
- 18:32Speaker 16: By the way he's acting, he's guilty. So, we're about
- 18:36Speaker 16: to go find out here in a little bit. If
- 18:38Speaker 16: I can send you a mail, I will.
- 18:40Speaker 2: I'll call you. Is there any way you can record it?
- 18:42Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Do you have a recorder?
- 18:44Speaker 2: I got a cell phone. Does it record? Like an
- 18:47Speaker 2: audio recorder? Why don't you do that? All right. The
- 18:51Speaker 2: whole conversation? I'll just see it recording when I get there.
- 18:54Speaker 2: All right.
- 18:55Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 18:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:57Speaker 10: Would it not let God if you get your phone
- 18:58Speaker 10: out and then hit record, put your pocket in there?
- 19:01Speaker 2: So tell me about killing Bucky here. If you kill Bucky,
- 19:03Speaker 2: you might be thinking he's a badass. You know what
- 19:08Speaker 2: I mean? I'm not worried.
- 19:10Speaker 16: I think he's guilty, honest to God. I don't know
- 19:13Speaker 16: how or why, but... No, I see him as a stupid,
- 19:17Speaker 16: punk-ass killer.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Ronnie Rager had offered to split the reward money for
- 19:22Speaker 1: locating Bucky with Chris Thorne if Chris would just admit
- 19:26Speaker 1: to what he did and where Bucky was. But Chris
- 19:30Speaker 1: denied any knowledge of or any involvement in the disappearance.
- 19:34Speaker 1: He told Ronnie that he had no idea where Bucky
- 19:38Speaker 1: Barlow was. At just past 9am on June 8th, just
- 19:46Speaker 1: over a week after Bucky disappeared, the County Sheriff's Office
- 19:50Speaker 1: received a phone call from a small group of hunters
- 19:53Speaker 1: who had spotted what they believed was a body floating
- 19:56Speaker 1: face down in the river. Pat Zukowski stated that he
- 20:01Speaker 1: and his grandson, Braden, spotted a body lying in the
- 20:04Speaker 1: creek bed. It was roughly 80 yards downstream from the bridge.
- 20:09Speaker 1: They went to the nearest home in the area and
- 20:11Speaker 1: alerted the homeowner.
- 20:16Speaker 4: He's the one that's missing. So that's kind of where
- 20:18Speaker 4: we were heading.
- 20:19Speaker 6: That's why everybody's just all going to converge at one
- 20:21Speaker 6: time and we'll look at it one time.
- 20:24Speaker 10: If you guys don't mind, you guys have IDs handy
- 20:26Speaker 10: so I can get, make sure everybody that's.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Witness can, I can.
- 20:29Speaker 10: Well, I pretty well.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Know who you are.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Deputies made their way down the river. The body was shirtless.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Jeans were around the ankles. Boots were on. The body
- 20:44Speaker 1: was unfortunately too decomposed to formally make an identification on site,
- 20:49Speaker 1: though Pat reported that he had known Bucky Barlow for ages,
- 20:53Speaker 1: and the man they found matched his build. Then, a
- 20:58Speaker 1: shirt lodged underneath a fallen log near to the recovery
- 21:01Speaker 1: site in the river was pulled from the water. The
- 21:04Speaker 1: blue and white striped shirt had two chest patches, one read,
- 21:09Speaker 1: Hillside Trucking, the other, Phillip. They had found Philip Bucky Barlow.
- 21:23Speaker 11: That's his name.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Call Travis and let him know his name's on it.
- 21:35Speaker 1: The cause of death was a deep laceration to the neck.
- 21:38Speaker 1: A knife or another blade had been the murder weapon.
- 21:41Speaker 1: it had not been recovered. Captain Titchenell concluded that wherever
- 21:46Speaker 1: Bucky had been murdered, there would have been a substantial
- 21:49Speaker 1: amount of blood. Police searching the river near to where
- 21:53Speaker 1: he was found did not identify a likely murder scene nearby.
- 21:57Speaker 1: The same was true for the first location where Bucky's
- 22:00Speaker 1: truck had been recovered by the side of the road.
- 22:03Speaker 1: In the truck itself, there was blood in the middle
- 22:06Speaker 1: to the right of the back seat. On the exterior
- 22:09Speaker 1: door handles, front driver and passenger seats, center console, steering wheel,
- 22:17Speaker 1: and the gear shift. However, the analysis concluded that with
- 22:21Speaker 1: the amount of blood loss apparently suffered by Bucky, it
- 22:25Speaker 1: was extremely unlikely that he had been killed inside the truck.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Zip ties located on the ground outside near to his
- 22:33Speaker 1: house suggested he could have been bound and transported elsewhere
- 22:38Speaker 1: in his own pickup before he was placed in the
- 22:41Speaker 1: river and the truck set on fire. Investigators spoke with
- 22:49Speaker 1: both Craig McLeod and Chris Thorne, as well as others
- 22:53Speaker 1: who had been implicated in the rumor mill by association.
- 22:56Speaker 1: They executed search warrants, pulled phone data, and verified alibis.
- 23:01Speaker 1: To the extent that they uncovered any verifiable evidence, it
- 23:04Speaker 1: supported their claim of innocence. It was also now clear
- 23:09Speaker 1: that Bucky had not been killed by a golf club,
- 23:12Speaker 1: nor had the killer utilized a grinder. Months passed with
- 23:16Speaker 1: little progress made in the investigation. Then, in January 2020,
- 23:22Speaker 1: Captain Titchenell went back through the files compiled in the
- 23:25Speaker 1: initial days of the investigation. He reviewed everything, including witness
- 23:30Speaker 1: statements and body cam footage. That is when he began
- 23:34Speaker 1: to closely scrutinize the recorded statements of Bucky's immediate next-door neighbors,
- 23:41Speaker 1: Laura Martin, and Bobby Quinn. The couple first spoke with
- 23:45Speaker 1: a deputy on May 29th. They did so again in mid-July.
- 23:50Speaker 1: What Tichnell noted was that they both, to some degree,
- 23:54Speaker 1: spontaneously claimed that they didn't hear anything that night because
- 23:57Speaker 1: of their air conditioner unit running. They always had it
- 24:01Speaker 1: on full blast, they said. Except the day the truck
- 24:04Speaker 1: was found, they did not mention an AC unit at all.
- 24:08Speaker 1: That day, they stated it was the noise from their
- 24:10Speaker 1: washing machine that had blocked all sound from outside. So,
- 24:19Speaker 1: the captain spoke with Mary Butler, who had arrived back
- 24:22Speaker 1: at the house next to Laura and Quinn's just after
- 24:26Speaker 1: Bucky went missing. Mary was positive that no air conditioner
- 24:30Speaker 1: unit was installed in their south-facing window when she returned
- 24:33Speaker 1: from Indiana. She knew it was about late June or
- 24:37Speaker 1: early July before the AC was put in the window.
- 24:41Speaker 1: This small inconsistency was not much to go on. That is,
- 24:46Speaker 1: until the captain also learned that the couple did not
- 24:50Speaker 1: own a washing machine either.
- 24:54Speaker 4: Well, thank you very much. I'll get out of your
- 24:55Speaker 4: way in just a second, guys.
- 24:56Speaker 11: Thanks.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Laura and Quinn's alibi was chased down. Family members who
- 25:06Speaker 1: were meant to have been working on a truck with
- 25:08Speaker 1: Quinn could not recall if they had been doing so
- 25:11Speaker 1: on the day and night in question, as he asserted.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Laura's grandmother could not confirm their presence at her home either,
- 25:18Speaker 1: though these were the locations the couple claimed to have
- 25:21Speaker 1: been on the night Bucky disappeared. While interviewing their family members,
- 25:26Speaker 1: police were told one more story about what had allegedly
- 25:29Speaker 1: happened to Bucky Barlow, and this one rang true. They
- 25:34Speaker 1: were told that Laura had confessed to the murder. She
- 25:38Speaker 1: told a family member that she and Quinn heard that
- 25:41Speaker 1: their neighbor had money. They staged a robbery with BB
- 25:44Speaker 1: guns outside his house, only to learn that Bucky only
- 25:48Speaker 1: had $ 50 in cash on him. So, they killed him.
- 26:01Speaker 1: In the spring of 2020, Laura Martin and Robert Quinn
- 26:05Speaker 1: were in custody in a Maryland jail following their arrest
- 26:08Speaker 1: for a series of storage building break-ins. From Preston County,
- 26:12Speaker 1: their communication was monitored. Would one of them slip up
- 26:16Speaker 1: and speak about the murder on a recorded line? While
- 26:20Speaker 1: Laura was never caught making any incriminating statements, she was
- 26:24Speaker 1: recorded having extensive, at times explicit, conversations with a man
- 26:29Speaker 1: that was not Bobby Quinn. To that point, Quinn had
- 26:34Speaker 1: denied any involvement in Bucky's murder. After he was played
- 26:38Speaker 1: some of Laura's recorded phone calls, however, proving her unfaithfulness
- 26:42Speaker 1: to him, Quinn began to talk. And he placed the
- 26:46Speaker 1: blame for the murder on Laura. Quinn offered to take
- 26:50Speaker 1: investigators to the locations where the robbery, kidnapping, and murder
- 26:55Speaker 1: took place.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 27:01Speaker 4: It was Quinn, right?
- 27:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:03Speaker 6: Okay, thank you.
- 27:04Speaker 11: I'm terrible with names. I'll remember your face forever.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:07Speaker 11: Terrible with names. Step to your left just a little bit.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Quinn told investigators that it was Laura's idea to rob Bucky.
- 27:16Speaker 1: She waited outside his door for him to exit for work.
- 27:20Speaker 1: When he came out, she attacked him, and a struggle ensued.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Only then did Quinn step in. The two of them
- 27:27Speaker 1: then forced Bucky into his own truck. They traveled to
- 27:31Speaker 1: an area known as Fortney Mills where there was a
- 27:34Speaker 1: swimming hole. The water falls below a bridge over the
- 27:37Speaker 1: Three Fork Creek. Laura forced Bucky to walk down under
- 27:41Speaker 1: the bridge.
- 27:43Speaker 11: She told him to give him your wallet. She said
- 27:51Speaker 11: give him the wallet?
- 27:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:52Speaker 11: And what else?
- 27:53Speaker 1: His money.
- 27:54Speaker 12: Okay.
- 27:55Speaker 11: Where was Laura standing at this time?
- 27:57Speaker 5: Right.
- 27:57Speaker 11: Right where I'm standing?
- 27:59Speaker 12: Okay.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Where were you standing?
- 28:01Speaker 16: I was standing pretty much where he's at.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Okay.
- 28:05Speaker 1: According to Quinn, Laura threw Bucky's wallet into the river
- 28:09Speaker 1: and told him to get on his knees after she
- 28:13Speaker 1: put him in the water.
- 28:15Speaker 11: He was on his knees at this time?
- 28:17Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 28:17Speaker 8: Okay.
- 28:18Speaker 11: Did he resist going down on his knees?
- 28:20Speaker 2: No.
- 28:21Speaker 12: Okay.
- 28:22Speaker 17: Then.
- 28:29Speaker 1: The specifics in Quinn's version of events changed several times.
- 28:33Speaker 1: The one constant was his attempt to put the majority
- 28:36Speaker 1: of the blame on his former partner, Laura Martin.
- 28:41Speaker 11: Now, did you see her shoving him into the water? No.
- 28:44Speaker 12: Okay.
- 28:44Speaker 11: You just assumed that she did?
- 28:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:46Speaker 15: Did you ever ask her what she did with him?
- 28:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:48Speaker 2: She said, well, he's in the water now, we'll get
- 28:50Speaker 2: back on. Okay.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Quinn explained that after dumping the truck and setting it
- 28:57Speaker 1: on fire, they walked to the home of one of
- 29:00Speaker 1: Laura's family members where they took his keys. They drove
- 29:03Speaker 1: the vehicle back to their home, changed into fresh clothes,
- 29:07Speaker 1: and then drove down River Road near the caves. There,
- 29:11Speaker 1: they burned any evidence that remained, including their dirty clothing.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Quinn said that he did not have any blood on
- 29:18Speaker 1: him at all, but burned his clothing as well because
- 29:22Speaker 1: he was scared.
- 29:24Speaker 13: Laura.
- 29:27Speaker 1: The last stop on Bobby Quinn's confession tour was the
- 29:30Speaker 1: location where it all began, on number four road where
- 29:34Speaker 1: they had lived. Quinn reiterated that he watched from the
- 29:38Speaker 1: window as Laura attempted to rob Bucky. Quinn explained that
- 29:42Speaker 1: Laura took his wallet at that point, apparently forgetting that
- 29:45Speaker 1: he had already included this detail in his account of
- 29:48Speaker 1: what had occurred at Fortney Mills by the water.
- 29:53Speaker 6: Now, earlier down at the stream, you told us that
- 29:56Speaker 6: he reached behind him when he was sitting on that
- 29:59Speaker 6: ledge to give.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Her his wallet.
- 30:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 30:02Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Hey, Bobby, come on. You just told us you gave
- 30:05Speaker 2: the wallet to her twice. Well, your version of.
- 30:07Speaker 11: This story has changed six times just since we've been here.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Okay?
- 30:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:13Speaker 2: They told her, she told him to give me my wallet.
- 30:20Speaker 11: You were here when this.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Started, right?
- 30:21Speaker 11: Yeah, you were.
- 30:22Speaker 4: You were.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I was there, right?
- 30:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 30:26Speaker 2: You were down here.
- 30:27Speaker 5: Okay.
- 30:28Speaker 11: There's just no doubt about that.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I come down after I seen her hitting. Yeah,
- 30:33Speaker 2: I was here.
- 30:34Speaker 6: You would not send your woman out to fight with
- 30:36Speaker 6: a full-blown man by herself to try and rob her.
- 30:39Speaker 6: I don't think that anybody would stand in the window
- 30:41Speaker 6: and watch from 100-ish yards away while their woman went
- 30:47Speaker 6: out to.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Laura Martin also agreed to share her version of events
- 30:56Speaker 1: with Captain Titchenell. She was not aware that Bobby Quinn
- 31:00Speaker 1: had decided to talk. By extension, she did not know
- 31:04Speaker 1: that he had implicated her almost exclusively in the murder. However,
- 31:08Speaker 1: she was still under pressure to come clean. Not only
- 31:11Speaker 1: had a family member recounted her alleged confession... but an
- 31:15Speaker 1: ex-cellmate had similarly told law enforcement that she had confessed
- 31:18Speaker 1: to her as well. That cellmate recounted disturbing details of
- 31:23Speaker 1: how Bucky's throat was cut. She quoted Laura describing him
- 31:27Speaker 1: trying to speak afterwards. He made a gurgling sound that
- 31:31Speaker 1: she said she would like to hear again. Laura apparently
- 31:36Speaker 1: said it was the coolest thing he had ever heard.
- 31:40Speaker 1: After she killed him, still with Bucky's blood on her hands,
- 31:44Speaker 1: They took out his lunch and ate the sandwiches that
- 31:46Speaker 1: he had packed for work that night. Tichnell determined that
- 31:50Speaker 1: the cellmate's account was credible. She included details such as
- 31:54Speaker 1: the nature of the injuries Bucky incurred to be facts
- 31:57Speaker 1: that only a person involved would have known.
- 32:00Speaker 7: Does Bobby even cooperate with you guys?
- 32:05Speaker 9: I don't know, ma'am.
- 32:07Speaker 6: I was asked to kind of stay out late after
- 32:09Speaker 6: my shift to ride around with you guys, and that's
- 32:13Speaker 6: about it.
- 32:14Speaker 2: You know, he's taking me down there. Down? To the bridge.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Laura said that the two of them jumped out at
- 32:22Speaker 1: Bucky in the dark with BB guns that they hoped
- 32:25Speaker 1: would pass for real firearms. Bucky immediately put up a fight,
- 32:29Speaker 1: she said, and he kept getting his licks in even
- 32:33Speaker 1: after they forced him into the truck. They attempted to
- 32:36Speaker 1: bind his hands with zip ties, but he broke free.
- 32:39Speaker 1: They wore masks that covered most of their faces and
- 32:42Speaker 1: gloves they purchased from Walmart. Despite their disguise once in
- 32:46Speaker 1: the truck, Bucky declared that he knew exactly who they were.
- 32:50Speaker 17: So that's kind of one of the parts that I'm
- 32:53Speaker 17: a little bit trying to get my head wrapped around.
- 32:57Speaker 17: Guy's walking out, gets a gun shoved in his face,
- 33:01Speaker 17: gets attacked, tries to be bound with zip ties, and
- 33:07Speaker 17: then he's just kind of, fine, I'll.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Go with you.
- 33:09Speaker 17: It seems like we're At Fortney Mills, Laura said Bucky
- 33:12Speaker 17: fought with Quinn before he was killed.
- 33:14Speaker 7: Her former partner had used a box cutter, which they
- 33:16Speaker 7: subsequently lost. It had likely fallen into the river during
- 33:19Speaker 7: the course of the murder, or in.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Rolling Bucky into the water.
- 33:41Speaker 1: She claimed to have fought to save him in the
- 33:43Speaker 1: final moments, but she had not been successful.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Do you think Bucky was dead at that point already?
- 33:54Speaker 3: Was he still moving at all?
- 34:11Speaker 13: No, okay.
- 34:12Speaker 3: He was really white.
- 34:14Speaker 5: Okay.
- 34:14Speaker 17: I'm kind of having trouble getting my mind wrapped around
- 34:16Speaker 17: something that you said a few times that Bucky put up.
- 34:19Speaker 2: A hell of a fight. Yeah.
- 34:21Speaker 11: I think it was where he got his licks in.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:23Speaker 17: But then he gets down here with a gun to
- 34:27Speaker 17: his head of the vehicle, comes down here, and then
- 34:30Speaker 17: just submits to get on his knees.
- 34:32Speaker 2: You've got to know that he's going to be murdered.
- 34:35Speaker 7: They scoffed.
- 34:35Speaker 3: They fought back and forth. Mommy's son got knocked away
- 34:37Speaker 3: by them.
- 34:39Speaker 7: Um, and then Bobby pulled out the box cutter and said,
- 34:42Speaker 7: you know, if I'm going.
- 34:46Speaker 3: To fight, you're going to die. And I just aspirated.
- 34:48Speaker 4: I was like, what the fuck.
- 34:51Speaker 8: Do you mean?
- 34:52Speaker 3: And Bobby started freaking out. He was like, he knows
- 34:55Speaker 3: who we are. He knows who we are.
- 34:57Speaker 5: He was like, I want to say nothing.
- 34:58Speaker 8: I want to say nothing.
- 34:59Speaker 3: I want to hear the words.
- 35:01Speaker 8: And I was just like, let him do the work.
- 35:02Speaker 3: If he says something, if it's a burglary or a robbery,
- 35:06Speaker 3: it's not a death.
- 35:14Speaker 1: Despite their claims of regret and blaming one another, Laura
- 35:17Speaker 1: Martin and Robert Quinn were each sentenced to life plus
- 35:22Speaker 1: 180 years in prison for robbery, kidnapping, and murder. They
- 35:26Speaker 1: each entered into plea agreements for first-degree murder and first-degree robbery.
- 35:31Speaker 1: The agreement was that they would receive life with a
- 35:34Speaker 1: recommendation of mercy, meaning they could apply for parole after
- 35:38Speaker 1: just 15 years on the murder charge. But the judge
- 35:43Speaker 1: sentenced each to 180 years for the robbery to run
- 35:47Speaker 1: consecutive with the life sentence, rendering the agreement completely moot.
- 35:54Speaker 1: The couple said the robbery was motivated by necessity. They
- 35:58Speaker 1: needed cash because their electricity was going to be turned
- 36:01Speaker 1: off for lack of payment. Upon sentencing, Bucky's siblings told
- 36:06Speaker 1: the court that his last dream had been to retire,
- 36:09Speaker 1: a goal he had spent his entire life working towards.
- 36:13Speaker 1: His killers had taken that from him. And that was
- 36:22Speaker 1: the tragic case of Philip Bucky Barlow. Thank you for
- 36:26Speaker 1: joining me, and a special thank you this week to
- 36:28Speaker 1: our newest Sherlock Holmes members. Thank you all for being
- 36:32Speaker 1: here with us. I'm Kevin, this is Just Thought Lounge,
- 36:35Speaker 1: and I'll see you in the next one.
- 36:53Speaker 11: You see how Newton got his back. Yeah, the content
- 36:56Speaker 11: that you need. This could be a new sign.
- 36:58Speaker 3: We talk in the comments.
- 36:59Speaker 4: They jot in a few lines. Tune in the headlight.
- 37:01Speaker 4: Love that.
- 37:02Speaker 2: It's too kind.
- 37:02Speaker 11: Feels like the whole world is online for true crime.
- 37:05Speaker 4: Watch them on the run, but it's not a race.
- 37:07Speaker 3: Really hard to disappear.
- 37:08Speaker 11: Proof without a trace.
- 37:09Speaker 4: Sherlock Holmes with it. I put you in your place.
- 37:11Speaker 3: Got my smoking pipe.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Only right.
- 37:12Speaker 3: I crack another case like.
- 37:14Speaker 5: I need that feeling that you brought.
- 37:20Speaker 11: Who learned the lesson that you taught?
