- 0:01Speaker 1: Watching Anthony Fauci before a congressional hearing taking the Fifth
- 0:08Speaker 1: Amendment is just one of the most heartbreaking things I
- 0:13Speaker 1: have seen in government in my lifetime. They want to
- 0:15Speaker 1: prosecute him, they want to convict him, and they want
- 0:19Speaker 1: to throw him in prison. That's the point of this hearing.
- 0:24Speaker 1: There is no other point of this hearing. We are
- 0:27Speaker 1: in a Senator Joseph McCarthy climate where there is such
- 0:35Speaker 1: fear that people have and legitimate fear that they'll end
- 0:40Speaker 1: up in prison for what they say. We are in
- 0:43Speaker 1: a dark period of America.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Sometimes it takes someone from outside of the immediate bubble
- 0:52Speaker 2: to speak truth that pops that bubble. How was the
- 0:56Speaker 2: founder of TMZ, Harvey Levin on the shameful by Senate
- 1:01Speaker 2: Republicans yesterday just a small fraction of the overwhelming backlash
- 1:05Speaker 2: Republicans received as Donald Trump and his allies tried to
- 1:09Speaker 2: do to Anthony Fauci. They've already done to Jim Comy, Tis,
- 1:12Speaker 2: James John Brennan, and other perceived political enemies of Donald
- 1:16Speaker 2: Trump weaponizing the government, and as Harvey Levin says, there
- 1:22Speaker 2: trying to create a predicate for criminal prosecution of Anthony
- 1:26Speaker 2: Fauci for simply doing his job. Former President Joe Biden
- 1:30Speaker 2: went out of his way in the final days of
- 1:32Speaker 2: his presidency to try to protect Fauci, issuing him a
- 1:35Speaker 2: blanket pardon. Senate Republicans, led by Rand Paul to release
- 1:40Speaker 2: excerpts of Fauci's personal diary in advance of the hearing,
- 1:43Speaker 2: fragged in front of the Senate Helme and Security Committee,
- 1:47Speaker 2: and an attempt to get Fauci to perjure himself and
- 1:49Speaker 2: get around that pardon. Doctor Fauci refused to take the bait.
- 1:54Speaker 2: He pleaded the Fifth for the duration of the hearing,
- 1:56Speaker 2: which Senate Republicans attempted to twist into some kind of
- 1:59Speaker 2: ad mision of guilt. If leaving the Fifth is an
- 2:02Speaker 2: admission of guilt, then someone should knock on Donald Trump's door.
- 2:06Speaker 2: He invoked at more than four hundred and fifty times.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Rempaul ejected doctor Fauci's lawyer for attempting to answer our
- 2:13Speaker 2: question and ended the hearing vowing to vote the whole
- 2:17Speaker 2: Fauci in contempt of Congress. Joining our coverage is former
- 2:21Speaker 2: Deputy National Security advisor to President Obama, now co host
- 2:25Speaker 2: of PODS Saved the World our contributor Ben Rose also
- 2:28Speaker 2: joining us. Former senior advisor to President Biden and Vice
- 2:31Speaker 2: President Harris, former Mayor of New Orleans Mitch Landrews here
- 2:34Speaker 2: he's now the co chair of American Bridge. Playing first Country. Mitchell,
- 2:38Speaker 2: I'll start with you. I'm increasingly aware. I guess I'm
- 2:44Speaker 2: always aware of the fact that the world is watching
- 2:47Speaker 2: that Americans pay attention to matters close to home, but
- 2:53Speaker 2: around the world, people in a lot of instances pay
- 2:56Speaker 2: closer attention than we do. And this is surely one
- 2:58Speaker 2: of those stories on the front pages of a lot
- 3:00Speaker 2: of newspapers around the country. A scientist who was so
- 3:03Speaker 2: revered by George W. Bush, President Obama and President Clinton.
- 3:09Speaker 2: A scientist who even Harvey Levin talked about his history
- 3:13Speaker 2: of saving lives at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Let me play some of that for you too. This
- 3:20Speaker 2: is more Harvey Levon.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Anthony Fauci, over a period of decades, has been an
- 3:31Speaker 1: amazing public servant. In the eighties, I had many friends
- 3:38Speaker 1: who died of AIDS, a horrible, painful death. And I
- 3:44Speaker 1: had friends who lived because of Anthony Fauci, because he
- 3:50Speaker 1: was willing to look at experimental drugs in a different
- 3:56Speaker 1: way than they had looked at them before, and that
- 4:00Speaker 1: really resulted in live saved. And he has done so
- 4:05Speaker 1: many other things in his career to thwart epidemics, to
- 4:12Speaker 1: save lives, not just in the United States but all
- 4:16Speaker 1: over the world.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Mitchett said something sad when the defense of Anthony Fauci
- 4:23Speaker 2: doesn't come from Washington, that it comes from the founder
- 4:27Speaker 2: of jm Z.
- 4:30Speaker 3: First of all, I agree with Barbary Levinton. I think
- 4:34Speaker 3: Anthony Fauci the great doctors my time. For those of
- 4:38Speaker 3: us that remember the Age Crisis and had friends die
- 4:41Speaker 3: from that work, it out. Doctor Fauci getting back then
- 4:44Speaker 3: and the work that he continued throughout his career has
- 4:48Speaker 3: just been exemplary.
- 4:50Speaker 4: I think he's an American hero.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Just to remind people, over a million people died in
- 4:55Speaker 5: the United States from COVID, and as I recall, I
- 4:58Speaker 5: think Donald Trump was president the time. I would also
- 5:01Speaker 5: just like to point out that Senator Ran Paul is
- 5:04Speaker 5: an eye doctor, He's not an infectious disease specialist, and
- 5:08Speaker 5: Anthony Fauci is. That hearing yesterday was a travesty of justice.
- 5:13Speaker 5: It was an embarrassment to the United States of America,
- 5:16Speaker 5: and to the American people, they should be ashamed of
- 5:19Speaker 5: themselves for taking him through that.
- 5:21Speaker 3: What they should have had a hearing about was how
- 5:24Speaker 3: the nation can better prepare for the next pandemic that's
- 5:27Speaker 3: coming so that we don't lose that many American lives.
- 5:30Speaker 3: And I think American people watched that yesterday and concluded
- 5:33Speaker 3: that these people are not.
- 5:34Speaker 6: Ownly Manuel, but they actually have completely focused on what
- 5:39Speaker 6: the American people need and what they want to keep
- 5:41Speaker 6: them safe and the kids safe in the future.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Ben Rose, your thoughts.
- 5:50Speaker 7: I want to pick up on sign mitchedaid because, look,
- 5:53Speaker 7: we can and should defend doctor Fauci against these attacks,
- 5:57Speaker 7: but Donald Trump is president of the United States this
- 6:00Speaker 7: entire time period that they're focused on Nicole. You rightly
- 6:04Speaker 7: pointed out repeatedly that all this conspiracies about the twenty
- 6:08Speaker 7: twenty election cover time period when he was in charge
- 6:12Speaker 7: of the United States government during that electoral period. And
- 6:16Speaker 7: so there's just something truly absurd about the fact that
- 6:19Speaker 7: Donald Trump, as president of the United States, is totally
- 6:23Speaker 7: unaccountable for anything.
- 6:25Speaker 4: That they think went wrong with the COVID response.
- 6:27Speaker 7: We're going to put everything on this one person doctor Faucie,
- 6:31Speaker 7: because he kind of represents that, I don't know, the
- 6:33Speaker 7: scientific establishment or something, when the reality is, if they're
- 6:37Speaker 7: mad about the origins of COVID, and Donald Trump is
- 6:40Speaker 7: in charge of the entire US in Telgen's community at
- 6:42Speaker 7: that time, right, he could have put out assessments. Donald
- 6:45Speaker 7: Trump was in charge of Project Warp Speed to develop
- 6:48Speaker 7: the vaccine, and so all these conspiracy theories and all
- 6:52Speaker 7: these allegations that they level at Fauci, well, the person
- 6:57Speaker 7: in charge of all that was Donald Trump.
- 7:00Speaker 4: To the absurdity of this nicole, they're not speaking to
- 7:02Speaker 4: the American people.
- 7:04Speaker 7: They're speaking to the third of the American population that
- 7:08Speaker 7: is kind of locked in a right wing media ecosystem bubble,
- 7:13Speaker 7: where the whole point is to not focus on the
- 7:17Speaker 7: things that people care about in their lives, like the
- 7:20Speaker 7: cost of living, like the war in Iran that has
- 7:23Speaker 7: no end in sight, like an economy that is increasingly
- 7:26Speaker 7: for a very small number of rich people at the top.
- 7:29Speaker 7: They just have to focus on whoever the villain of
- 7:32Speaker 7: the week is to fill.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Up the airtime and generate a lot of content.
- 7:37Speaker 7: I mean, these are not people going to legislat or
- 7:39Speaker 7: conduct oversight that there are people going to have viral
- 7:43Speaker 7: clips in some deep recess of the right wing media ecosystem,
- 7:48Speaker 7: with the total intellectual and logical incoherence of the fact
- 7:52Speaker 7: that they're yelling about.
- 7:53Speaker 4: A government response that was led by not Anthony.
- 7:56Speaker 7: Fauci but Donald Trump, their cult leader, you know, and
- 8:00Speaker 7: it's totally ridiculous. But the reason we have to take
- 8:03Speaker 7: it seriously is that there aren't real consequences. They're trying
- 8:05Speaker 7: to destroy people's lives, and they're trying to criminalize people
- 8:09Speaker 7: they don't like just for the views that they've taken.
- 8:13Speaker 4: And that's why I think we do have to take
- 8:15Speaker 4: it seriously.
