- 1:31this episode, we will be discussing trauma and
- 1:35our body -based emotions. Please care for yourself
- 1:39during this. If you need to pause, skip, or come
- 1:43back later, if anything feels too intense, it
- 1:48is always your choice to stop and not continue
- 1:53or stop when you're in a more comfortable space.
- 1:58So this episode is for education and spiritual
- 2:02support. It isn't therapy or a substitute for
- 2:06medical care. If you're processing significant
- 2:09trauma, consider working with a licensed therapist
- 2:13or a qualified practitioner. So just to make
- 2:18sure you get the quality care in which you deserve.
- 2:23We're opening to a tender yet. powerful conversation
- 2:27about something that touches every one of us
- 2:30in some way, and that is trauma. And before we
- 2:35begin, please notice your surroundings. Are you
- 2:39somewhere where you feel safe enough? You feel
- 2:43supported? And your privacy is respected. If
- 2:48not, consider listening to this at a later time.
- 2:53It's not like you're going to be asked to share
- 2:57your trauma, but sometimes these conversations
- 3:00can be triggers and just want to be mindful of
- 3:04that with everyone. So trauma is not always what
- 3:11we think it is. I don't want to get into the
- 3:14clinical definitions of trauma, but this is what
- 3:17I will say. There are several different types
- 3:19of trauma. There's acute. chronic and complex
- 3:22we may have experienced one of these if not all
- 3:27of these trauma isn't just about what happened
- 3:33it's about how we hold on to what happened in
- 3:37our bodies it's the relationship we have with
- 3:41that emotional event that impacted us deeply
- 3:44whether it was physical emotional are something
- 3:49we simply witnessed and absorbed. There's no
- 3:53criteria that says your trauma has to lurk a
- 3:56certain way to matter. If it hurt you, if it
- 4:02changed you, if it still echoes in your life,
- 4:06it's valid. And it is not for anyone to tell
- 4:13you whether your trauma is valid or serious.
- 4:18or anything like that. It's yours. It's what
- 4:21your experience is, and it's valid just with
- 4:24that simple fact right there. What I would do
- 4:28want to say is that when we hide our pain, it
- 4:32doesn't go away. It finds a home in our body.
- 4:37Maybe it shows up as tightness in our shoulders,
- 4:41fatigue that lingers, or health issues that seem
- 4:45to have no explanations. our body remembers what
- 4:49our mind tries to forget. So, our bodies are
- 4:56incredible storytellers. They remember what the
- 5:02mind forgets. Every emotion, every experience,
- 5:06every moment of pain or fear that leaves an energetic
- 5:12imprint. When those emotions aren't felt or expressed
- 5:18they don't just disappear they settle somewhere
- 5:22in the body you may be sweeping it under the
- 5:26rug thinking oh if i put it up under here i don't
- 5:29have to face it your body holds on to that so
- 5:32you're not doing yourself any favor whatsoever
- 5:35if you're one of these that said yeah we're not
- 5:39going to talk about that okay but your body is
- 5:43going to remember it and it's going to hang on
- 5:45to it And it's going to show up somewhere later.
- 5:48You may not see it now. You may not see it tomorrow.
- 5:51You may not even see it in 10 years from now.
- 5:54But it will show up at some point. Guarantee
- 5:57you. So from a psychological standpoint, trauma
- 6:01activates the nervous system. Floods the body
- 6:05with stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.
- 6:09If that activation never fully resolves, the
- 6:14body stays in a subtle state of defense, like
- 6:18it's still waiting for danger, like the next
- 6:22shoe to drop, like always looking over your shoulder,
- 6:24concerned about hot things. Over time, this unprocessed
- 6:30energy becomes stored as tension, tightness,
- 6:34pain, and fatigue. And it hides, and it comes
- 6:41out sometimes. the least expected moment, or
- 6:45what you may think is the least expected moment.
- 6:49You might feel it in your shoulders and your
- 6:54neck, carrying burdens or responsibilities that
- 6:57aren't yours. You might feel it in your heart
- 7:01and your chest, grieving loss or heartbreak that
- 7:04was never fully released. This doesn't necessarily
- 7:07have to be loss of someone who's passed on. This
- 7:10could be... A loss of someone who you were in
- 7:15a relationship with and you're no longer in that
- 7:17relationship for whatever reason. This could
- 7:20be a loss of a pet that you never fully grieved.
- 7:24So the loss could be many things. Stomach. Stomach
- 7:31issues can be held by anxiety, fear, or experience
- 7:37that you could not digest. Like you couldn't.
- 7:40fully resolve or deal with lower back many times
- 7:46i'm gonna say like most of your back but lower
- 7:50back in particularly you may feel unsupported
- 7:53or unsafe i'm in our throat ah truths unspoken
- 7:59or emotions held in silence and i'm gonna tell
- 8:04you like i was really good at that right i just
- 8:07zip it up right It's not safe for me to say this
- 8:11around you. So I'm going to zip it up and I'm
- 8:13not going to say anything. And I was holding
- 8:15it in. And so that might be why I have thyroid
- 8:18disease today. I have learned that it's safe
- 8:23to speak up and it's safe to share. And I still
- 8:27work on this today. Just because I've identified
- 8:30it and I've worked through it doesn't mean that
- 8:34that working through never stops. So energetically.
- 8:39These stored emotions can create blockages in
- 8:41our body's natural flow. What many traditions
- 8:45call stagnant energy or dense vibration, the
- 8:51body tries to communicate through sensations.
- 8:53These sensations can be aches, tension, even
- 8:57reoccurring illnesses. It's not punishment, it's
- 9:01communication. If it helps, there's one you can
- 9:06do like... a simple sentence to kind of start
- 9:10that communication. You have to listen, right?
- 9:13So you can start by saying, today my body speaks
- 9:17in my, we'll say lower back, my body speaks in
- 9:21my lower back. And it's saying that I don't have
- 9:26support on this new adventure that I'm going
- 9:30on. All right? You don't have to fix it. You
- 9:35just have to witness it, right? So the healing
- 9:38begins when we listen. And so when we allow ourselves
- 9:42to feel what was once too painful to face, we
- 9:48open space for the energy to begin to move again,
- 9:51to begin to shift and change. Breath work, movement,
- 9:58like physical movement, walking, meditation,
- 10:03Reiki. journaling, one of my favorites, and forgiveness
- 10:10work. All of these things help restore trauma.
- 10:15So your body, our bodies are not betraying us
- 10:19by holding us in. It is inviting us to reconnect.
- 10:23Each ache or discomfort is a whisper from your
- 10:26soul saying, hey, there's something here ready
- 10:30to be loved and to be freed. So when we go back
- 10:34to the sentence that I stated earlier, today
- 10:38my body speaks in my, fill it in, and it's saying
- 10:44that, and fill it in. Even though you don't have
- 10:50to fix it at this very moment and you're just
- 10:52witnessing it, I encourage you to ask, what do
- 10:56I need at this moment? And listen for that answer,
- 11:01right? It could just be simply self -love. It
- 11:05could be like, I've got to get these emotions
- 11:08out and I've got to set them free. It could be,
- 11:12I need somebody to talk to. So whatever that
- 11:15is, I encourage you to step into that. So how
- 11:24do we begin to heal? The first step is to simply
- 11:29acknowledge it. To allow yourself to talk about
- 11:32what happened. Even if your voice shakes while
- 11:35you're doing it. Even if you start getting into
- 11:38tears. If you can reach out to a trusted therapist
- 11:42or counselor, that would be amazing. If that's
- 11:47not available to you, I would say find a friend,
- 11:50a mentor. Someone who can hold space for you
- 11:54without judgment. Someone that can be there and
- 11:58just... Just simply listen. They don't have to
- 12:02provide advice. They don't have to provide you
- 12:05anything. Just the safety of being able to listen
- 12:09and consult, right? The safety of being able
- 12:14to, what's mentioned here stays here, right?
- 12:18So you don't have to worry about anything, right?
- 12:22So they're holding a space that is safe and judgment
- 12:26-free. Very most important thing. If speaking
- 12:32out loud is too hard and sometimes speaking out
- 12:36loud these things and saying them out loud is
- 12:38so hard. I mean, I know, right? Then write about
- 12:43it. Journal about it, right? Put it down in writing.
- 12:46So I don't care if it's like pen or paper journaling
- 12:49or if it's typing notes in your computer or on
- 12:53your phone. Like, as long as you're moving that,
- 12:57right? And so you may want to start by asking
- 13:02some things in your journey, like, what emotions
- 13:06have been asking for my attention lately? What
- 13:12emotions have been asking for my attention lately?
- 13:18And see what emotion comes up. Do tears start
- 13:22flowing? let the tears flow does anger start
- 13:26creeping in okay be angry for a minute right
- 13:30i mean it's okay it's just you and your journaling
- 13:34no harm there next i would ask is what would
- 13:40support have looked like to me back then so what
- 13:46kind of support in the moment of the trauma that
- 13:50you witnessed, or the moment shortly thereafter,
- 13:53what would a support look like for you? Right?
- 13:59And then identify what that is. And then follow
- 14:05up on that. What is one, just one small way I
- 14:10can offer that support to myself now? Is it listening?
- 14:16We're going to practice listening. Right? Is
- 14:20it sharing? You're sharing through your journaling.
- 14:23Right? So you're giving yourself that. Is it
- 14:27unconditional acceptance? Give yourself that
- 14:30unconditional acceptance. Right? Lack of judgment?
- 14:34Release all the judgments around it. Right? And
- 14:38be able to hold that space for yourself. And
- 14:42then maybe, you know, another question is, what
- 14:45boundary would help my nervous system? feel safer,
- 14:50right? So what kind of boundary do you need to
- 14:54set? What kind of boundaries do you need to set
- 14:56in your life to feel safer, right? And then see
- 15:01about being able to follow through with setting
- 15:03those boundaries and putting them into practice.
- 15:08Even if that means telling someone that you love
- 15:10dearly, but that has may have been a cause of
- 15:14further trauma. Being able to just let them know,
- 15:18hey, I need time to myself. I need time to heal
- 15:21and I need space. And I'll let you know when
- 15:24I'm ready. It's perfectly okay to put a relationship
- 15:31on pause so that you can heal. Especially if
- 15:35that relationship, you know, was the trauma.
- 15:39Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Right? Because
- 15:43you have to begin to heal yourself. So recording
- 15:47your thoughts or your emotions is like the most
- 15:50important thing that can allow the words to move
- 15:54out of your mind and into expression. I love
- 15:59that. Allowing the words to move out of your
- 16:03body and into expression. Because once you allow
- 16:07ourselves to feel, to begin to heal, we begin
- 16:13to free ourselves. At that same moment. In my
- 16:20own journey, I carried deep wounds from childhood
- 16:23abuse. Deep wounds. And for many years, I worked
- 16:28to release this pain. But the full freedom of
- 16:32that didn't come until my abuser passed away.
- 16:37And my abuser didn't pass away until I was like
- 16:40in my 40s. But once my abuser passed, I believed
- 16:47I finally had the permission to talk about what
- 16:51I had experienced more openly. This time, I didn't
- 16:57speak out to gain permission from others or sympathy
- 17:00from others. I did it purely for me. For me to
- 17:07allow myself the freedom to scream, and believe
- 17:11me, I screamed. To yell, I yelled, and I just
- 17:17got it out. And it happened like time and time
- 17:21and time again there for a little while. Many
- 17:24times I was screaming and yelling at my abuser
- 17:27in an empty room by myself. But I was letting
- 17:31it out. And this, you know, these were huge moments
- 17:35for me. And finally it came the moment that was
- 17:39most bittersweet. And yet it allowed me to finally
- 17:44breathe, to forgive, and to reclaim my peace.
- 17:50And what I learned from that experience is that
- 17:54dealing with what happened wasn't on anyone else's
- 18:00timeline. It was on mine. So whatever your experience
- 18:05with, however your healing takes place, Whatever
- 18:11it looks like, it's all yours. And it all happens
- 18:15your way, right? And it happens what best happens
- 18:20for you. It's never too late. It's never too
- 18:26far gone, right? And the moment that you choose
- 18:31to look at what's happened and what you've been
- 18:36hiding from and... you allow this healing to
- 18:41begin that's the perfect moment for you and that's
- 18:45all that matters I don't care if it happened
- 18:48two minutes ago or 40 years ago it doesn't matter
- 18:52the timing of what's going on is absolutely perfect
- 18:57for you because it's on your time so together
- 19:03you know they with all of these things together
- 19:07realizing that Whether it's journaling or talking
- 19:10or whatever you got to do for that. Pulling all
- 19:14these things together to help you feel. To help
- 19:18you heal. And to rest in your own mind. There's
- 19:24no shame in having gone through trauma. Many
- 19:28of us have done it, if not all. And so, you know,
- 19:32wear it kind of like a badge of honor. But allow
- 19:35it to heal. Stop holding it in our bodies. The
- 19:39majority of my trauma that I held was in my lower
- 19:41back. And it was hard. When I shared my story
- 19:54with the individual that mattered most, the lack
- 20:05of support. That I received from that individual.
- 20:11Literally. I mean almost literally broke my back.
- 20:17So. Me opening up and sharing. My story. With
- 20:24someone that. You know was very important to
- 20:27me. And that I was looking for. I don't know
- 20:34really what I was looking for. Right? Acknowledgement,
- 20:37forgiveness, I don't know. But there was absolutely
- 20:43no support from that person. And there was more
- 20:48accusations than support. And that hurt. That
- 20:53hurt terribly. And so literally two days later,
- 21:00I hurt my back, my lower back. I got my sciatic
- 21:04nerve. got ended up being pinched and literally
- 21:09I lived on the floor for three months and it
- 21:14was oh it was rough I mean the pain was just
- 21:18enormous the emotional pain was just as bad and
- 21:23so then I started dealing with the The reality
- 21:36that the expectation of what I was hoping for
- 21:39didn't happen. The reality of the support that
- 21:43I wanted wasn't there. But all of this, I was
- 21:48looking outside of me. Every bit of it, I was
- 21:50looking outside of me. I separated myself. I
- 21:56set my boundaries. Important to set your boundaries.
- 22:01I set my boundaries. And I started working through
- 22:06the pain. And I started working through the pain
- 22:11myself. And so, yeah, I screamed and yelled in
- 22:15a room, right? I said what I had to say. I said
- 22:22things that I never felt it was safe for me to
- 22:26say. I let the anger out for the first time.
- 22:32after like 30 years right um it was freeing um
- 22:42at the same time right um and then the amazing
- 22:51thing about it is yes for like three months i
- 22:53basically lived on the floor but um i was supposed
- 22:57to go for a no i did have you know modern medical
- 23:02help. I went to an orthopedic, you know, about
- 23:06my back. They gave me exercises and stretches
- 23:09to do and I started doing those. There was supposed
- 23:12to be a series of three shots that I was supposed
- 23:15to take for my back. I only had to do one. The
- 23:20other two I never had to go back for. Through
- 23:23exercise, determination, And going through my
- 23:29own emotional healing process, I didn't have
- 23:33to do the other two shots. I mean, I was better
- 23:39than I ever was before. And so, you know, realizing
- 23:44for me, one, letting the emotions out, anger
- 23:48out, because there was a lot of anger there.
- 23:50I'm letting the disappointment free. I'm held
- 23:55quite a bit. But what it is, is the support that
- 23:58I needed, the forgiveness that I was looking
- 24:01for, I turned inward and I found it within myself.
- 24:06I was no longer looking for it outside. Now,
- 24:10I'm not saying that to say, hey, you got to find
- 24:13it all within. No, sometimes you need to find
- 24:16it outside. Sometimes you need that outside support.
- 24:19There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. This
- 24:21is just what I did. So I'm not saying that necessarily
- 24:24everything that I did is right for everyone.
- 24:26This was what was right for me. And so what I'm
- 24:30saying is find what's right for you. Whatever
- 24:33healing process is right for you, you find what's
- 24:36right for you. Stick with it. Know that you deserve
- 24:39it. And find your support system. So, you know,
- 24:46healing trauma isn't about forgetting the past.
- 24:49I never forgot the past. It's about transforming
- 24:53your relationship with it. And that's what I've
- 24:56done, right? So every tear, every breath, every
- 25:02act of self -compassion brings you closer to
- 25:06wholeness. So being able to embrace that and
- 25:10bring that in. So today, I say take a moment
- 25:14to thank your body. Thank you. Give it a hug,
- 25:18right? It has carried you through. everything
- 25:21you thought you couldn't survive and it's still
- 25:25here and so are you guiding you towards peace
- 25:29right so you can simply start by saying something
- 25:33like i honor my body's wisdom i trust my soul's
- 25:39timing i am healing in love so let's say that
- 25:44again but just a little bit slower i honor my
- 25:48body's wisdom I trust my soul's timing. I am
- 25:54healing in love. So I hope you can carry that
- 26:01with you for the rest of the day. After this
- 26:06episode, drink some water. Step outside if you
- 26:10can. Place a warm compress on an area that has
- 26:14held some sensation or some tension for you.
- 26:19If big feelings have surfaced, plan a gentle
- 26:22activity like drinking some warm tea, stretching
- 26:27or journaling, right? So you can move on with
- 26:31the rest of your day. So I would like to say
- 26:35that if you are in the U .S. and you need immediate
- 26:37support, you can call or you can text 988 for
- 26:43the Suicide and Crisis Hotline. If you're outside
- 26:47of the U .S. please contact your local emergency
- 26:50number or a national crisis hotline in your country.
- 26:56Just know that there is support and help out
- 26:59there available for everyone. You're just finding
- 27:03what's right for you. So thank you again for
- 27:09joining me today. If this message resonated with
- 27:12you, please be sure to share it with someone
- 27:15that you know who could benefit from hearing
- 27:18it. And remember, healing is not about perfection.
