Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's up everybody. Welcome into another edition of the Checkodaily.
- 0:13Speaker 2: It's Andrew de Checko, Eagles beat reporter for insidethbirds dot Com.
- 0:17Speaker 2: And don't look now, but we now turn the page
- 0:19Speaker 2: to another phase in the offseason process, and that would
- 0:23Speaker 2: be the NFL Draft. But February is for the NFL
- 0:27Speaker 2: Scouting Combine, but it is also mock draft season, and
- 0:31Speaker 2: so I went ahead and put out my first mock
- 0:35Speaker 2: draft to check O Mock Draft one point zero on
- 0:38Speaker 2: Inside the Birds dot Com.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And today we're going to kind of go through Day one.
- 0:42Speaker 2: And Day two where I'll elaborate on why I went
- 0:46Speaker 2: with those players, positions, and maybe what those players have
- 0:50Speaker 2: to offer. And Sunday will be reserved for Day three
- 0:54Speaker 2: where I can kind of expand on that. But in
- 0:57Speaker 2: the first round, the Eagles are picking at number twenty three,
- 1:01Speaker 2: and they're going to find themselves in prime position to
- 1:05Speaker 2: add whether it's a tight end, an edge rusher, an
- 1:08Speaker 2: offensive lineman. But here I think you really have to
- 1:11Speaker 2: give some thought as to their philosophical approach and historically
- 1:16Speaker 2: the Eagles build through the trenches, and with that in mind,
- 1:21Speaker 2: Lane Johnson, whether he returns however long he decides to play.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Whenever that may be. The Eagles do not have.
- 1:27Speaker 2: A succession plan for when that day comes, and so
- 1:32Speaker 2: you have to look at it through the eyes of
- 1:34Speaker 2: the Eagles, and I think they're going to have a
- 1:36Speaker 2: good spot to add a tackle who could offer some
- 1:39Speaker 2: guard versatility. But I went with Caden Procter, the tackle
- 1:43Speaker 2: from Alabama, six foot seven, three hundred and sixty six pounds.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I like the way that he has power to anchor, heavy,
- 1:53Speaker 2: violent hands, potential versatility to kick inside to guard, and
- 1:57Speaker 2: I do believe that he profiles as a high end tackle.
- 2:02Speaker 2: And you couple him with Jeff Stotland, and I think
- 2:05Speaker 2: you have a player there where he can undoubtedly reach
- 2:09Speaker 2: his talent, reach his ceiling with the talent that he has,
- 2:12Speaker 2: And I think that's probably the way that I would go.
- 2:16Speaker 2: And this is late January, so a lot could change.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Stocks tend to rise, they tend to fall, new names emerge.
- 2:23Speaker 2: We'll see if there's any interest at the Combine Pro
- 2:26Speaker 2: Days thirty visits, and so there's still a lot to
- 2:34Speaker 2: be determined here. But I was trying to put my
- 2:36Speaker 2: Howie Roseman cap on here, and you look at what
- 2:40Speaker 2: the value could be at pick twenty three, So I
- 2:42Speaker 2: went tackle and to take this a step further, Fred Johnson,
- 2:47Speaker 2: who stepped in and started nine games in Johnson's absence
- 2:49Speaker 2: last season.
- 2:51Speaker 1: He did a nice job. He was solid.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Perhaps there's a team out there that now has enough
- 2:57Speaker 2: data on Fred Johnson that they're willing to view him
- 3:01Speaker 2: more as a starting caliber lineman. He's going to be
- 3:04Speaker 2: a free agent, but I would argue that he should
- 3:06Speaker 2: be among the priorities among the eagles vast pool of
- 3:09Speaker 2: free agents to retain because of the value that he provides.
- 3:12Speaker 2: He's proven that he can step in, he can be
- 3:14Speaker 2: that swing tackle on game day.
- 3:16Speaker 1: But it's all in the eyes of the beholder.
- 3:18Speaker 2: We don't quite know how teams are viewing Fred Johnson,
- 3:21Speaker 2: so we'll learn more about that in March. And then
- 3:24Speaker 2: Brett Toath is another backup offensive lineman who was the Eagles'.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Top reserve at center and guard.
- 3:31Speaker 2: And he's another player that I would make a priority
- 3:34Speaker 2: because they don't have a lot of depth there, and moreover,
- 3:37Speaker 2: they don't have an obvious candidate that can step in
- 3:40Speaker 2: there and start.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Because before our eyes, this offensive.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Line is getting a little older, a little longer in
- 3:45Speaker 2: the tooth, and you have to start getting those plans
- 3:48Speaker 2: in place. So I went with Caden Proctor at pick
- 3:51Speaker 2: number twenty three in the second round. And let me
- 3:56Speaker 2: preface this by saying, the Eagles have so much money
- 3:59Speaker 2: invested in their offense, significant allocation of resources. They're going
- 4:05Speaker 2: to have to start paying their defensive players Quinna Mitchell,
- 4:08Speaker 2: Cooper Degen. They have Jaywen Phillips as a free agent,
- 4:11Speaker 2: you have Reed Black and Chip who's a free agent.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Jaywen Carter is a player that they're going to probably
- 4:16Speaker 2: look to extend in the near future. That's just to
- 4:20Speaker 2: name a handful, but there are so many different players
- 4:24Speaker 2: that they're going to have to look to make an
- 4:26Speaker 2: effort to retain to ensure continuity and impact on that.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Side of the ball.
- 4:31Speaker 2: And then on the offensive side, they need to start
- 4:33Speaker 2: getting younger. This is a group that has a lot
- 4:36Speaker 2: of resources invested in their top two wide receivers, DeVante
- 4:40Speaker 2: Smith and aj Brown. All the tight ends, including Dallas
- 4:44Speaker 2: Goddard are primed to be free agents, so there's questions there.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Offensive line Landon Dickerson played through a multitude of injuries
- 4:52Speaker 2: this season. Cam Jurgens will now be two years removed
- 4:55Speaker 2: from back surgery, but we have to see how he'll return.
- 4:58Speaker 1: So there's a lot of questions there.
- 4:59Speaker 2: And some of those players there's as I mentioned that
- 5:03Speaker 2: there is a lot invested in them, so you have
- 5:06Speaker 2: to start getting younger there, and even at wide receiver.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Regardless of what ends up happening with aj Brown, whether.
- 5:12Speaker 2: He stays or whether he leaves via trade, the Eagles
- 5:17Speaker 2: have to add another wide receiver there.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Johan Dowson will be a free agent.
- 5:20Speaker 2: They have Darius Cooper, who they really like, second year
- 5:23Speaker 2: player now out of Tarleton State, good story development, Brittin
- 5:27Speaker 2: Covey's there. He signed a two year deal. They have
- 5:31Speaker 2: Danny Gray and Ques Watkins who signed reserve futures deals.
- 5:36Speaker 2: But you have to also look at it and say
- 5:38Speaker 2: they need depth. They need to add another dynamic piece
- 5:40Speaker 2: there because I believe that Sean Mannion and Josh Grizzard
- 5:45Speaker 2: are going to make a more concerted effort to involve
- 5:49Speaker 2: that third receiver. Yes, there's gonna be more loving personnel,
- 5:52Speaker 2: but try to find a way to implement that third receiver.
- 5:55Speaker 2: And so I went with a Omar Cooper junior out
- 5:58Speaker 2: of Indiana, six foot two four compactly, built, really good
- 6:02Speaker 2: after the catch. Close to five hundred of his nine
- 6:04Speaker 2: hundred and thirty seven receiving yards last season were after
- 6:08Speaker 2: the catch, so he's very physical. I think he attacks
- 6:11Speaker 2: the catch point really well and he's a three level threat,
- 6:15Speaker 2: but also someone that they can get the ball to
- 6:17Speaker 2: in space on those slant routes like you would for
- 6:20Speaker 2: an AJ Brown and allow him.
- 6:22Speaker 1: To move those chains. But I like that he's coming.
- 6:27Speaker 2: From a program that just won the National Championship.
- 6:33Speaker 1: He saw a lot of volume. He's also a solid blocker.
- 6:37Speaker 2: So when you're looking at different pieces that Eagles could
- 6:40Speaker 2: add to add different layers to what I'm expecting to
- 6:43Speaker 2: be a reimagined offense, Omar Cooper would be a prime
- 6:47Speaker 2: example of a player that the Eagles could be in
- 6:50Speaker 2: position to draft when they're on the clock at pick
- 6:52Speaker 2: fifty four, and I think it would be well worth
- 6:55Speaker 2: their while to try to get somebody like that into
- 6:58Speaker 2: the fold because he can affect teams in so many
- 7:01Speaker 2: different ways that it almost seems like it would be
- 7:05Speaker 2: an obvious fit, especially if they're not able to retain
- 7:09Speaker 2: AJ Brown. So we'll see how that goes. But I
- 7:12Speaker 2: want wide receiver there in the second round, and I
- 7:14Speaker 2: don't think that that's a position that should be ignored.
- 7:16Speaker 1: They do need to.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Get a little bit younger, they need to get a
- 7:19Speaker 2: little bit more dynamic to add to what they already have.
- 7:22Speaker 2: So that was an easy pick for me. Then we
- 7:26Speaker 2: get to the third round, pick number sixty eight. I
- 7:30Speaker 2: mentioned that all the tight ends, Dallas Goddard predominantly are
- 7:35Speaker 2: going to be free agents, and you can make the
- 7:37Speaker 2: argument that the Eagles have a decent shot at retaining
- 7:40Speaker 2: Dallas got it for at least one more season, if
- 7:43Speaker 2: we're able to come to an agreement, maybe a more
- 7:45Speaker 2: cost effective, team friendly deal like last season.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Look, this is someone who had.
- 7:50Speaker 2: A career high in touchdown reception, so it may seem
- 7:53Speaker 2: on the surface that he's going to be highly coveted
- 7:55Speaker 2: around the league, but he's also thirty one years old.
- 7:57Speaker 1: He also is a player who is dealt with a
- 8:00Speaker 1: ton of injuries in his career, so.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I think he holds more value to the Eagles and
- 8:04Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts, who Jaywen and Dallas have a obvious rapport
- 8:09Speaker 2: and that's been evident in training camps in years past.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Certainly over the past training camp. He's a good security blanket,
- 8:16Speaker 2: very good after the catch, and we've seen that he
- 8:18Speaker 2: was a good red zone presence. Kevin Patula did a
- 8:21Speaker 2: really nice job of finding ways, unlike other offensive coordinators
- 8:24Speaker 2: in the past, to involve Dallas Goddard in.
- 8:27Speaker 1: The red zone to get creative and how they get
- 8:29Speaker 1: him the football.
- 8:31Speaker 2: So I think best case scenario, Dallas got it, returns
- 8:35Speaker 2: and the Eagles they identify his understudy who can learn
- 8:40Speaker 2: under Goddard for a season and then take the reins
- 8:42Speaker 2: next year. So I went with Max Claire, the tight
- 8:45Speaker 2: end from Ohio State. He began his career at Purdue.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I like what he brings to the table, really smooth
- 8:51Speaker 2: route runner six five two and forty three pounds, forty
- 8:55Speaker 2: three catches four hundred and forty eight yards last season
- 8:58Speaker 2: and two touchdowns for the buck guys. I like the
- 9:00Speaker 2: alignment versatility, he has reliable hands and ability to play
- 9:04Speaker 2: through contact. But I go back to the route running
- 9:08Speaker 2: prowess and his knack for finding the sauce spots in
- 9:11Speaker 2: the zone. He's also a solid blocker. There's room for
- 9:14Speaker 2: improvement there, as there are for most players, but what
- 9:18Speaker 2: I've seen from him over the years indicates to me
- 9:21Speaker 2: that he has that in his arsenal, So that's another
- 9:24Speaker 2: plus that he can bring in.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Just be that chain moving security blanket for Jalen Hurts.
- 9:29Speaker 2: I like that fit from an eagle standpoint and from
- 9:32Speaker 2: a positional standpoint.
- 9:33Speaker 1: That's good value there. And this draft is not all
- 9:37Speaker 1: that deep when.
- 9:38Speaker 2: It comes to the tight end position, So that's something
- 9:41Speaker 2: to keep in mind. You don't want to wait till
- 9:43Speaker 2: day three to identify that player because then you're.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Banking on them being sort of.
- 9:51Speaker 2: A high upside dark throw that you're putting all the
- 9:53Speaker 2: eggs in that basket. And I don't know if you
- 9:56Speaker 2: can live that way, live on the edge when you
- 9:58Speaker 2: have a position that's in dire straits right now, it's
- 10:01Speaker 2: very lean and there's a lot of questions there.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying
- 10:06Speaker 3: to clean up their habits and that includes me. Honestly,

- 13:13Speaker 5: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Twenty one stand up Finally Round three pick number ninety eight.
- 13:23Speaker 1: The Eagles are lean at edge rushers.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Stop me if you've heard that before and last offseason
- 13:30Speaker 2: that was a talking point. It was Jay looks On,
- 13:32Speaker 2: It was Noan Smith, not a ton there, Brandon Graham
- 13:35Speaker 2: had retired and there just wasn't a whole lot of
- 13:39Speaker 2: variety for the Eagles to hang their hat on. And
- 13:43Speaker 2: let's not forget there was questions about Jay lookshn stepping
- 13:46Speaker 2: in in a second season after he played sparingly as
- 13:48Speaker 2: a rookie, and Nolan Smith coming off the triceps there.
- 13:51Speaker 2: So we're back to square one all over again, because
- 13:54Speaker 2: the only two edge rushers that you can count on
- 13:56Speaker 2: this season in twenty twenty six are once again Jay
- 13:59Speaker 2: looks h On and Nolan Smith. Jalen Phillips, who I
- 14:02Speaker 2: would argue should be the top priority for the Eagles
- 14:05Speaker 2: market depending is a free agent Brandon Graham.
- 14:09Speaker 1: His future is uncertain right now.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Josh Usha and aziz O Jelari, who both players signed
- 14:15Speaker 2: one year proved deals last offseason, they didn't really factor
- 14:19Speaker 2: all that much in the Eagles equation. Aziz Oji played
- 14:23Speaker 2: sparingly and then finished the season well. He was on
- 14:25Speaker 2: injured reserve with a hamstring injury for most of the year,
- 14:28Speaker 2: and then his twenty one day practice window opened in
- 14:30Speaker 2: the postseason and he was never heard from again. Think
- 14:34Speaker 2: after that first Giants game, so I think if the
- 14:37Speaker 2: price is right, you want to bring an experienced player
- 14:39Speaker 2: in there like Ojalari, give him another look this offseason.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Perhaps josh Uche I thought kind of got a raw deal.
- 14:45Speaker 2: He did a nice job when he was called upon
- 14:48Speaker 2: with the snaps that he was given as that fourth
- 14:51Speaker 2: edge rusher role provided pressure, played with physicality, helped on kickoff.
- 14:55Speaker 2: But when Brandon Graham came out of retirement, Vic Fangio
- 14:58Speaker 2: has proven over his career that he's not a coach
- 15:00Speaker 2: that's going to dress an abundance of pass rusher. So
- 15:05Speaker 2: josh uche was the odd man out handle it like
- 15:07Speaker 2: a pro. But if I'm josh Usa, I'm probably wanting
- 15:10Speaker 2: to go to another place that's going to utilize my
- 15:13Speaker 2: skill set as a pass rusher, and it doesn't seem
- 15:16Speaker 2: like that's gonna happen in Philadelphia.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Nevertheless, that goes back to my original point.
- 15:21Speaker 2: You have two edge rushers you can count on in
- 15:23Speaker 2: twenty twenty six, and so that's in the area where
- 15:27Speaker 2: the Eagles should look to add a player on Day
- 15:30Speaker 2: one or day two. I have them getting one here
- 15:33Speaker 2: at pick ninety eight with Danny Dennis Sutton from Penn State.
- 15:38Speaker 1: And this is someone.
- 15:41Speaker 2: That he's listed at six foot five, two hundred and
- 15:44Speaker 2: fifty three pounds. I've seen his weight go as high
- 15:47Speaker 2: as two sixty five to seventy depending on where you look,
- 15:51Speaker 2: and I'm looking forward to speaking to him more at
- 15:53Speaker 2: the NFL scouting combine because he's an interesting player. Back
- 15:56Speaker 2: to back seasons with eight and a half sacks, and
- 15:59Speaker 2: that was after I've duel Carter left.
- 16:01Speaker 1: So he was still productive last season.
- 16:03Speaker 2: He liked that he's a lengthy power player who sets
- 16:05Speaker 2: the edge with violence, and I believe that his developmental
- 16:08Speaker 2: upside is intriguing. So a lot of these players who
- 16:11Speaker 2: I mentioned, they're going to be at the Combine, they'll
- 16:13Speaker 2: be at the podium and I'm hoping to speak to
- 16:15Speaker 2: them and get a better sense of maybe their background,
- 16:19Speaker 2: their influences, where they've grown the most, and how they
- 16:22Speaker 2: believe that they can affect an NFL team in a
- 16:25Speaker 2: positive way. But that's Day one and day two. As
- 16:29Speaker 2: I mentioned, I'll have Day three for you on Sunday.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Something to let marinate, and I'm sure everybody has a
- 16:35Speaker 2: lot of questions. Mock draft season is always very interesting,
- 16:38Speaker 2: a lot of feedback, a lot of perspective, and the draft.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Season is quickly upon us.
- 16:44Speaker 2: It's the early stages of it, granted, but I'm really
- 16:47Speaker 2: looking forward to unpacking all of that in the weeks
- 16:50Speaker 2: and months to come.
- 16:51Speaker 1: That's going to do it for this edition of the
- 16:53Speaker 1: Czech Odaily.
- 16:54Speaker 2: I am Andrew Decheco and I'll catch you all on
- 16:57Speaker 2: the next one.
