- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27This is Derek Phi and today we're going to be talking about
- 0:31how to maintain a healthy coach job life balance.
- 0:39I'll be the first to admit that I'm the last person that should
- 0:42be talking about this, especially coming off a weekend
- 0:45where at the facility that I I coach at, we hosted 5 meets in a
- 0:50three day span. So we're talking 14 hour a day,
- 0:55a 12 hour a day and 11 hour days.
- 0:58So you know, somewhere around 36 hours for for three days work.
- 1:03So again, this I am not the expert on this and I don't claim
- 1:08to be and my wife would wouldn't laugh at me for saying that.
- 1:12So just to introduce myself a little bit more, I am the head
- 1:18cross country coach and assistant track coach at College
- 1:22of Saint Mary in Omaha, NE. This is my 12th year there.
- 1:27Prior to that, I was the head boys cross country coach and
- 1:30distance track coach at West Side High School for seven
- 1:35years. And then I am also at the moment
- 1:38actually teaching at West Side. So I have a full time job
- 1:42teaching social studies and then another, we'll just call it full
- 1:47time job coaching at the collegiate level.
- 1:50And I also electronically time local meets, high school meets.
- 1:55As I've seen there's a, a very large gap in people that are,
- 2:01are able to electronically time meets.
- 2:04So really my, my third job is becoming more full time as well.
- 2:09So this topic is is near and dear to my heart because I have
- 2:13failed so miserably at keeping that balance.
- 2:20Hopefully a few things that I have learned or I am currently
- 2:24learning or am thinking about in the future might ring true for
- 2:29you. Maybe you can take a couple
- 2:30things. And maybe if anything, maybe
- 2:34you're just nodding your head saying, OK, Yep, this sounds,
- 2:37this sounds pretty familiar. So yeah, I want to get that out
- 2:41of the way. I'm, I'm not qualified to teach
- 2:44anybody on this, to talk about this, this particular topic, but
- 2:50it is something that in the past year, I've, I've really made an,
- 2:54an effort, an intentional effort to, to try and, and figure
- 2:59things out. And, and not that my life was
- 3:02spiring out of out of control, but it's just more how can I
- 3:05make the people around me happier?
- 3:08How can I keep myself healthy? And I've learned a few things
- 3:15and, and, and I'll go over a couple of those.
- 3:17So the, the, the first one is just that you got to keep
- 3:21whatever your top, top priority is.
- 3:23You have to, you have to keep that your top priority.
- 3:26And I'm not talking on the coaching side of things.
- 3:30I know we, we all are thinking about coaching.
- 3:35We're thinking about the next track meet, we're thinking about
- 3:38the next event, We're thinking about so many things related to
- 3:42our sport because it is such AI mean it's a fantastic sport.
- 3:46It's the personally, I think it's the best sport on earth.
- 3:50It's also one of the more time consuming in your thought
- 3:54process and in your daily life because there's just so many
- 3:58events and there's so many athletes to keep track of and
- 4:01keeping your head and you, you want the best for them.
- 4:04But I'm talking about with a top priority, something outside of
- 4:07your work, something outside of, of your team.
- 4:12For some of you, for some of us, it's family.
- 4:15Maybe you're, you're married, you have a relationship.
- 4:19If, if that's not you, maybe religion is, is your top
- 4:23priority. Maybe it's a hobby, maybe it's
- 4:26friends, whatever that is, whatever your top priority is.
- 4:30And it's going to be different for everybody.
- 4:32And I'm not going to preach or tell you which one it should be.
- 4:35Just know that you have to keep that at the forefront of your
- 4:39mind that that that that's important.
- 4:42And that doesn't mean that you're going to be able to give
- 4:46it the proper attention at all times.
- 4:48Like I said, I'm coming off of about 36 hours of work in the
- 4:53past three days. So it wasn't meant to be for
- 4:57this past weekend to do much with my wife.
- 5:03And all of you that are in the track and field world know that,
- 5:06you know, especially if you're in the high school ranks,
- 5:09you're, you're talking 22 meets a week, maybe maybe 3 meets a
- 5:13week if you've got, you know, freshman only squad or you've
- 5:16got 2 JV meets in a week or varsity and two JV.
- 5:19Whatever it is, it, it's not always going to happen that that
- 5:23top priority gets the proper attention.
- 5:26It, it's not, it's just not part of part of the gig that we're
- 5:30in. And I will get back to that in a
- 5:33moment as far as relationships and and the people around you
- 5:37and things like that, But just keep that top priority in the
- 5:40forefront of your mind when you can make decisions that involve
- 5:45that top priority in, in fitted in there.
- 5:48And, and it sounds bad. And again, I'm hoping my wife
- 5:51never hears this, but you know, you, you, your schedules, my
- 5:56schedule are such that it is a matter of fitting those things
- 6:01in. And that's how you make it a
- 6:03priority. I'm going to fit that in.
- 6:05I'll give you a couple examples here in in a second.
- 6:08But the most important thing for keeping that top priority, a top
- 6:13priority is that you have to let go of things.
- 6:18And, and I'm talking of the coachings stuff.
- 6:22So I'm a type A person. I like things organized and I'm
- 6:29a perfectionist. And again, not to say that
- 6:33everything that we produce at my program or the meats that we run
- 6:37or the events that I'm involved in that it's perfection.
- 6:40It's not. But I'm, I'm type A personality,
- 6:44I'm deeply invested and I, I want things to go a certain way.
- 6:48And when I'm running a meet, I want things to go a certain way.
- 6:51It needs to be done this way and it needs to be done that way.
- 6:53And in the past, it has become, I need to do it this way.
- 7:01And I'm really the only one that can do it this way.
- 7:05And so that burden really is on me.
- 7:07And I'm going to make it my burden.
- 7:10I'm going to own it because I want it to be done this way in
- 7:15in this way perfectly. So what I have found, at least
- 7:19in the last year, whether that's my assistant coach and cross
- 7:23country, you know, maybe it's a a mile repeat day or maybe we're
- 7:28doing, you know, repeat five hundreds.
- 7:31If I have a a recruit, maybe I'm going to go go see.
- 7:35I give that work out off to to my assistant.
- 7:39I would not have done that in the past and that'll get to my
- 7:42next thing about trust. But I have started delegating
- 7:46those things. Delegation is, is extremely,
- 7:50extremely difficult for type A folks like me and people that
- 7:55are perfectionists. That is that might be the
- 7:58hardest thing to do for someone with, with my personality.
- 8:03And I have found over the last year I've I've tried in order to
- 8:07keep that top priority a top priority.
- 8:11I have tried to delegate things. I've tried to hand things off,
- 8:15knowing that OK, first of all, it's going to be OK if something
- 8:19happens. If something happens, it'll be
- 8:22fine. There's ways that we can fix it,
- 8:24you know, But it's also that thing about trust.
- 8:29So you have to trust the people around you.
- 8:33You have to trust that that they know what they're doing, and you
- 8:37have to trust that they're going to do it correctly.
- 8:41And that again, that's a difficult skill to have when
- 8:45you're talking about, you know, organization of things if
- 8:48you're, if you're a personality like me.
- 8:51So just to give an example of that, this past weekend we were
- 8:55hosting a meet and I had my distance group in charge of like
- 8:59taking gait and doing concessions and a couple of
- 9:04things moving blocks during the meet.
- 9:07And I knew I was going to be gone for 36 hours and three
- 9:11days. So I had told my wife, hey, you
- 9:15know, let's meet up for for dinner on on Friday.
- 9:19Let's meet up for dinner. Well, don't you have a meet?
- 9:22You know, she texted me. Don't you have a meet?
- 9:23Yes, got a meet. But let's meet up for I can
- 9:26leave. I'm going to leave.
- 9:27And so we went to dinner for two hours, relaxed.
- 9:30I wasn't thinking of the meet. I wasn't concerned.
- 9:34I handed it off to the folks that I expected to take care of
- 9:37it. They took care of it.
- 9:40And it made for a much, much easier weekend as far as, you
- 9:47know, my relationship because that that top priority that was,
- 9:52was not going to be the focus for that three day span.
- 9:57I found a way to delegate, found a way to let go and could leave
- 10:03and, and focus on that top priority.
- 10:06And then when I get done with the meat, you know, she asks a
- 10:10question about it, I'll answer, but I don't talk about, I'm not
- 10:13going to talk about track and field when we have a, a meet
- 10:18that I'm coaching at. If, if she asks, you know how
- 10:21they do, I'll explain it. But after that it's, it's, you
- 10:25know, what do we want to do? What you know, now I should say
- 10:29this. If you're in a relationship with
- 10:31a track person, I happen to be married to a non, non athlete.
- 10:36And so I think I've had to learn, I've been married for
- 10:41coming up on on three years and I've had to learn, you know,
- 10:46listen, this is how the sport works.
- 10:50It's not like any other sport. It's not, it's not basketball
- 10:54practice. It's not football practice.
- 10:57I couldn't tell you how long practice is going to go today.
- 11:01I couldn't tell you how long practice is going to go any day
- 11:03because at any, any moment one of my athletes is going to ask a
- 11:07question that I'm going to pay attention to and we're going to
- 11:11go through it. And whatever that concern is or
- 11:13whatever we're talking about is going to get done.
- 11:16Which means the nine to five thing.
- 11:19As we all know as track coaches, it's not a thing.
- 11:22And if you're in a relationship with someone or your your top
- 11:26priority is not, we'll just say, is not aware of what what the
- 11:34sport entails. It takes a lot more.
- 11:36It takes a lot more work on your part to be able to explain
- 11:40things and to be, you know, obviously the old, the age-old
- 11:44things of communicate, communicate, communicate.
- 11:46Yes, communication is, is key, but there's you need to over
- 11:50communicate as far as a non athlete, if you're in a
- 11:54relationship or your top priority is with people that
- 11:58understand the sport of track and field, then you probably
- 12:00have a lot less explaining to do and, and and what not.
- 12:04But that doesn't mean you should neglect or can neglect those top
- 12:07priorities. I just have to, I've had to
- 12:11massage the, you know, 12 hour days and explain those in a bit
- 12:18of detail about why this happens this way and why that happens
- 12:21that way because of my situation.
- 12:25You might not be in that situation, but for those that
- 12:28don't, aren't familiar, I'll just say aren't familiar with
- 12:30track and field. Obviously it's a different sport
- 12:33and and we do things differently.
- 12:36In fact, I had AI had a a local high school coach that was a
- 12:41former colleague of mine who went back to high school
- 12:44coaching said, you know, I asked him, how's it, how's it getting
- 12:48back into high school? Track and field say, well, man,
- 12:54you know, you've got 80 people on a roster, but that's the
- 12:57team. There's no, obviously there's no
- 12:59JV team, there's no varsity team.
- 13:01This stuff, it changes week to week.
- 13:03It could change the day before a meet.
- 13:05And I've got the secretary in the athletic department asking
- 13:08about a list 3 days in advance for the bus.
- 13:11And we have to know who's going to be missing class 3 days in
- 13:14advance. And, and you know, your, your,
- 13:16your basketball coach who has the JV squad can just copy and
- 13:19paste the, the, the roster list every week and just send it out
- 13:24and takes all of about 10 seconds.
- 13:27My list. I got to think, OK, who is in
- 13:29the 1600? Who's in the 100 dash?
- 13:32Who am I taking? Who am I moving up?
- 13:34Who, who is going to run JV next week?
- 13:36So, you know, obviously there's just a lot more to our sport and
- 13:41it, it does pose issues with our own personal lives And, and that
- 13:48balance, because it's crucial that my favorite, it's hokey,
- 13:52It's it's goofy, I get it. But one of my favorite movies is
- 13:56Karate Kid. I was born in 1979.
- 13:58So that was right in my, my youth.
- 14:02Karate Kid was my is still in my top five of favorite movies.
- 14:07But when Mr. Miyagi says, you know, life is about balance, I
- 14:12mean that couldn't, it couldn't be more true.
- 14:13It's just about balance. You have to be able to balance
- 14:16everything. And I think as track coaches, we
- 14:21tend, we tend to put that coaching part as just our entire
- 14:29life that that is, that is all we think about.
- 14:32That is all we do. And for those people around us
- 14:36or those other priorities that we try and make, they take such
- 14:40a back seat. And, and I'm not saying, and
- 14:42again, everybody, everybody can do whatever they want.
- 14:45I'm not telling you how to live your life, but I just have found
- 14:49that I have to let go of things. I have to, I have to delegate.
- 14:54You got to let go for me. When the meat's over, I, I think
- 14:59about things that that could have gone better and, and maybe
- 15:03maybe I should have done this or man, I was hoping they would
- 15:06have done that. And after about 20 minutes, it's
- 15:09like shut, shut it down. They'll be, there's other days
- 15:13to think about it and I'll think about that tomorrow.
- 15:15But right now I need to go and, and fold the laundry or I need
- 15:19to, you know, go hang out with my wife.
- 15:24So it's just a matter of that balance.
- 15:27You, you have to find a way. And for me, it's teaching the
- 15:32people you know, around just here's here's what I expect or
- 15:39here's what I need. And then once you teach it and,
- 15:43and you've, you've got, you know, you feel comfortable, you
- 15:47got to let it go. It, it, it means you got to
- 15:50trust those people around you. Because if that's, if that's not
- 15:54the case, if you don't trust the folks around you, it, it makes
- 15:58for a pretty miserable experience.
- 16:00And I've again, I've just recently been doing that
- 16:05probably in the last year or so, being able to say, Hey, I need
- 16:09this, can you do that? And then it gets done.
- 16:13And then I have found, oh, OK, well, that thing got done.
- 16:16Now I can, you know, maybe have this thing done.
- 16:19So it's not giving up all your responsibilities, but it's not
- 16:23also having total control over every little thing in your life
- 16:28and in your program. It's it's giving that up.
- 16:31It's I, I have found it's, it's released a, a lot of tension
- 16:37between certainly between me and my wife, but also just with me
- 16:41personally. You hold on to a lot of that
- 16:44stress. You hold on to a lot of that
- 16:47worry and anxiety and I'm not an anxious person, but when you got
- 16:53a lot on the on the plate, you, you have to be able to just just
- 16:58let it go. As they said in frozen, let it
- 17:00go, let it go. And I'm just finding that I'm,
- 17:04I'm at the beginning of this journey.
- 17:05I'm at the beginning of this process.
- 17:07I'm 12 years into college coaching and you know, 19 total
- 17:14years into the coaching realm. I am in year 1, beginning year 2
- 17:22of really figuring out, OK, coaching is fun, coaching is
- 17:26great, love it. It's a passion.
- 17:28It's a passion for all of us and the people around us want to
- 17:32share that passion. And then we got to let go at
- 17:36times and say, let's do this other thing and let go mentally,
- 17:43let go physically, just I'm going to detach for a second and
- 17:48focus on something else. And again, it doesn't as far as
- 17:52I'm concerned. I, I don't think so.
- 17:54Maybe my athletes would, would disagree.
- 17:55And I don't think it makes me a lesser coach.
- 17:57It doesn't make me feel like I'm a less, less dedicated person.
- 18:02I have found that it has made life just a bit easier and, and
- 18:09more enjoyable than stressing and, and, and holding on to, to
- 18:15all those things. So if, if you get anything out
- 18:18of this, hopefully it's something along the lines of if
- 18:24now, if all you do is coaching and that's just your thing and
- 18:26that is, and that is your life and, and it doesn't have an
- 18:32impact on other parts, then I mean, go for it.
- 18:35Obviously. It's just have at it.
- 18:38I've just found that even, you know, I love Oreos and after my
- 18:436th one in a sitting, that just wasn't a good idea.
- 18:48You know, maybe after three I should have stopped.
- 18:51And I'm finding that with pretty much everything I do.
- 18:55OK, Let's, let's just let's get that balance back and, and focus
- 19:01on this other thing and not not dropping any of the balls that
- 19:06are that were juggling in the air.
- 19:08But, but just letting go just a little bit so that the people
- 19:12around us can, can enjoy us and, and, and we're present and we're
- 19:17there and, and whatever that top priority is, can remain that top
- 19:23priority. Hopefully that's helpful.
- 19:25If not, sorry for taking up about 18 minutes of your time.
- 19:29I wish you luck in this spring season and moving forward.
