- 0:02We generally jump to extremes in our way of looking at things
- 0:06from our normal mental viewpoint.
- 0:09Thus we either want to accept that everything is absolutely
- 0:13determined and thus every move we make, every action, every
- 0:18reaction is choreographed down to the slightest detail, or else
- 0:24we want to believe that we are totally free and independent and
- 0:28we are basically self-made in our decisions and actions.
- 0:33The reality, however, is somewhat more complicated than
- 0:36this view. The Bible claims that God
- 0:40attends to the fate of each bird in the field, which implies some
- 0:44kind of micromanagement of all activities.
- 0:47This is an example of a belief in absolute determinism.
- 0:52There are others who say that either there is no God or that
- 0:56God is dead, implying that we are totally free and unhindered
- 1:01in making whatever free decision we like.
- 1:04Even those who do not acknowledge the existence of
- 1:07some overarching attendant power, working out each detail
- 1:11of our lives may still accept the idea of a chain of cause and
- 1:16effect, karma or dependent origination.
- 1:22That said, the science of mathematics, and in particular
- 1:26statistical analysis and the development of the fields of
- 1:30psychology, sociology, and social psychology, can lead us
- 1:36to a more nuanced understanding of how things occur.
- 1:40These disciplines show that individuals exercising what they
- 1:44believe to be their free will actually wind up creating
- 1:48patterns that are able to be both predicted and mapped when
- 1:54there is a large enough sample to capture a suitably large
- 1:57population of decision makers. This is the famous bell shaped
- 2:02curve that plots the results in such a way that one can see that
- 2:06the big picture direction is carried out while there are
- 2:10still outliers both below and above the primary distribution
- 2:15of results, all of which remains predictable as to the big
- 2:19picture while each individual is essentially left free.
- 2:25Of course, this freedom is also conditioned by the chain of
- 2:29cause and effect, so the actual implementation of free will is a
- 2:34minor aspect of the larger picture.
- 2:37Yet the aspect of free will remains a possibility.
- 2:43The higher one climbs in the ladder of consciousness, the
- 2:47more flexibility and free will is evidenced eventually at the
- 2:52realms of the cosmic spirit that controls and directs the
- 2:55conscious development of the universal manifestation.
- 2:59The exercise of free will comes to its true fruition,
- 3:05Shriorobindo observes, quote. The universal forces move by
- 3:09their own force and the consciousness within them.
- 3:13But there is also the cosmic spirit who supports them, and
- 3:17determines by his outlook and disposing will their play.
- 3:22Although the direct action is left to the forces, it is the
- 3:26play of universal procrity, with the universal Purusha watching
- 3:30behind it in the individual. Also there is the individual
- 3:35Purusha, who can, if he wills, not merely assent to the play of
- 3:39procrity, but accept or reject or will for its change.
- 3:45All that is in the play itself. As we see it here, there is
- 3:50something above, but the action of that is an intervention
- 3:54rather than a moment to moment control.
- 3:57It can become a constant direct control only when one replaces
- 4:02the play of the forces by the government of the Divine End.
