- 0:29Sports and trivia games galore. Welcome to Kick Ass Daily, where
- 0:35we bring news, trivia, fun facts, and more just for curious
- 0:39kids like you. Today, we're going to talk about
- 0:42something you use every day, even if you don't think about it
- 0:45much. You use them when you eat, when
- 0:47you talk, and even when you smile for photos.
- 0:50That's right, we're talking about teeth.
- 0:53Have you ever wondered what your teeth are made of?
- 0:56Why you lose some and grow new ones, or how to keep them
- 0:59strong? Get ready to become a tooth
- 1:02expert. Let's start at the beginning.
- 1:05What exactly are teeth and why do you have them?
- 1:08Teeth are hard structures in your mouth.
- 1:11Their main job is to help you bite and chew food, making it
- 1:15easier to swallow and digest. Teeth also help you make certain
- 1:19sounds when you talk, and they give shape to your face.
- 1:22Imagine trying to eat an ale with no teeth.
- 1:25It would be really tough to break it into pieces.
- 1:28Now let's take a closer look at what teeth are made of.
- 1:31Each tooth might look pretty simple, but it actually has
- 1:34several important parts. The part you can see, the white
- 1:38bit that sticks out from the gums is called the crown.
- 1:41Underneath the crown is the root, which holds the tooth
- 1:44firmly in your jawbone. Your teeth are covered with a
- 1:48tough, shiny layer called enamel.
- 1:51Did you know enamel is the hardest substance in your entire
- 1:54body? Yes, even harder than your
- 1:56bones. Enamel protects your teeth from
- 1:59damage when you bite and chew. Under the enamel is another
- 2:03layer called dentin. Dentin isn't as hard as enamel,
- 2:06but it's still pretty strong. It helps support the enamel and
- 2:09gives your tooth its basic shape.
- 2:12Inside every tooth, there's a soft part called the pulp.
- 2:16The pulp has nerves and blood vessels.
- 2:18The nerves help you feel things, like if you bite into something
- 2:21cold or hot, and the blood vessels bring nutrients to keep
- 2:25your tooth healthy. Now let's talk about the gums.
- 2:29Gums are the pink soft tissue that surrounds your teeth.
- 2:33They help hold your teeth in place and protect the roots.
- 2:36Keeping your gums healthy is just as important as taking care
- 2:40of your teeth. Here's a quick trivia question
- 2:43for you. Do you know what the area where
- 2:45your teeth and gums meat is called?
- 2:50It's called the gum line. The gum line is where plaque, a
- 2:54sticky film of bacteria, loves to hide.
- 2:57That's why you need to brush along the gum line every day.
- 3:01Moving on, how many teeth do you think kids have?
- 3:03When you're born, you actually have no teeth showing.
- 3:07But hidden under your gums, your very first teeth are already
- 3:11forming. These are called primary teeth
- 3:14or baby teeth. Most babies start to get their
- 3:17first tooth around six months old.
- 3:19By the time you're about 3 years old, you'll usually have all 20
- 3:23baby teeth, 10 on the top and 10 on the bottom.
- 3:27Baby teeth are important because they help you chew food and
- 3:30learn to talk. They also make space in your
- 3:32mouth for your grown up teeth, which will come in later.
- 3:35Now here's a fun yes or no question.
- 3:39Do all of your baby teeth fall out at the same time?
- 3:45The answer is no. Baby teeth fall out one at a
- 3:48time, usually between the ages of 6:00 and 12:00.
- 3:51As each baby tooth falls out, an adult tooth, also called a
- 3:56permanent tooth, grows in its place.
- 3:59Did you know that you'll have more adult teeth than baby
- 4:01teeth? Most kids and adults have 32
- 4:04permanent teeth once all of them have come in.
- 4:07That includes 4 special teeth at the very back called wisdom
- 4:10teeth, which usually show up when you're a teenager or even
- 4:14older. Let's talk a bit about the types
- 4:16of teeth you have. Not all teeth do the same job.
- 4:20There are 4 main types of teeth in your mouth.
- 4:23First, there are incisors. These are the sharp, flat teeth
- 4:27at the front of your mouth, 4 on the top and four on the bottom.
- 4:31Incisors are great for cutting food, like when you take a bite
- 4:34out of a sandwich or a carrot. Next to your incisors are your
- 4:38canines. You have four of these pointy
- 4:41teeth, 2 on the top and two on the bottom.
- 4:44Canines help you tear food, like when you bite into a piece of
- 4:47chicken or an apple slice. Behind are canines are your
- 4:51premolars, also called bicuspids.
- 4:54There are 8 premolars in total, 4 on top and four on the bottom.
- 4:58Premolars have flat surfaces with ridges which help you crush
- 5:02and grind food. And finally at the very back you
- 5:06have your molars. Molars are big flat teeth that
- 5:10help you grind up food into little pieces, making it easier
- 5:13to swallow. Most people have 12 molars,
- 5:16including the wisdom teeth. Here comes another trivia
- 5:20question. Which type of teeth do you use
- 5:22the most when you chew a crunchy apple?
- 5:28The answer is your molars. Molars are perfect for grinding
- 5:32crunchy foods into tiny pieces. Now let's talk about how teeth
- 5:36grow and change as you get older.
- 5:39When a new tooth is ready to come in, it pushes through the
- 5:42gum, which sometimes feels a little sore.
- 5:45This is called teething, and it happens first when your baby
- 5:49teeth come in and later when your adult teeth replace them.
- 5:53Losing baby teeth can feel a little strange, but it's a
- 5:56normal part of growing up. Some kids even look forward to
- 5:59the day their teeth get wiggly and fall out, especially if they
- 6:03have fun traditions like leaving a tooth under their pillow.
- 6:06When your new adult teeth grow in, they are usually bigger and
- 6:10stronger than your baby teeth. Did you know that your teeth are
- 6:13always changing even after they grow in?
- 6:16For example, the enamel on your teeth can wear down if you eat
- 6:19too many sugary snacks or don't brush and floss properly.
- 6:24That's why taking care of your teeth every day is super
- 6:27important. Here's a quick yes or no
- 6:29question for you. Can your teeth repair a big
- 6:31cavity or hole all by themselves?
- 6:37The answer is no. Teeth can't heal big cavities on
- 6:40their own, so you need to visit a dentist to fix them.
- 6:44Let's talk about keeping your teeth healthy and strong.
- 6:47Brushing your teeth twice a day with toothpaste helps remove
- 6:50food and plaque. Plaque is a sticky film of germs
- 6:53that can cause cavities if it's not cleaned off.
- 6:57Flossing once a day helps clean between your teeth where your
- 7:00toothbrush can't reach. Here's a trivia question.
- 7:04What is the name of the mineral and toothpaste that helps
- 7:06protect your teeth from cavities?
- 7:11The answer is fluoride. Fluoride makes your enamel even
- 7:15stronger and help stop cavities from forming.
- 7:18Eating healthy foods is important for your teeth. 2
- 7:22Foods like milk, cheese, yogurt, leafy greens, and crunchy fruits
- 7:27and vegetables help keep teeth strong.
- 7:29Sugary snacks and drinks like soda and candy feed the bacteria
- 7:33in your mouth and can cause cavities if you have them too
- 7:36often. Did you know that there are
- 7:38people whose whole job is to help you keep your teeth
- 7:41healthy? Dentists and dental hygienists
- 7:43check your teeth, clean them, and teach you how to take care
- 7:47of your mouth. Most kids should visit the
- 7:49dentist every six months for a checkup.
- 7:52Here's a final yes or no question.
- 7:55Do you need to brush your gums and tongue as well as your
- 7:57teeth? The answer is yes.
- 8:03Brushing your gums and tongue helps keep your whole mouth
- 8:06fresh and healthy. Let's recap what we learned
- 8:09today. Teeth are amazing structures
- 8:12that help you eat, talk, and smile.
- 8:15They have different parts like enamel, dentin, pulp, and roots.
- 8:19You start with 20 baby teeth, which are later replaced by 32
- 8:24adult teeth. There are four types of teeth,
- 8:27incisors, canines, premolars, and molars, and each one does a
- 8:31different job. Taking care of your teeth by
- 8:33brushing, flossing, eating healthy foods, and visiting the
- 8:37dentist is the best way to keep your smile bright.
