- 0:00Speaker 1: Ice and snow frustrate us. Storms disrupt routines, They send
- 0:05Speaker 1: people scrambling to grocery stores, make travel dangerous, and force
- 0:09Speaker 1: last minute changes to plans. Winter weather, no doubt, messes
- 0:14Speaker 1: with our lives, but sometimes it comes with an unexpected upside.
- 0:19Speaker 1: West Virginia is an energy state, and that matters, especially
- 0:22Speaker 1: in moments like this. In recent months, three new natural
- 0:26Speaker 1: gas power plants have been announced here. Those investments promise
- 0:30Speaker 1: more reliable and affordable electricity on top of an already
- 0:34Speaker 1: strong generation fleet. And here's a key point that often
- 0:37Speaker 1: gets overlooked. West Virginia frequently produces more electricity than it needs,
- 0:43Speaker 1: even during periods of high demand. When temperatures drop, electricity
- 0:47Speaker 1: demand rises, and right now that can actually work in
- 0:51Speaker 1: West Virginia's favor. As of Sunday afternoon, the state was
- 0:54Speaker 1: exporting nearly twenty seven hundred megawatts of electricity into the
- 0:59Speaker 1: Pjam regional grid, power sold to utilities and providers across
- 1:03Speaker 1: the region that needed it and couldn't produce it on
- 1:06Speaker 1: their own. In plain terms, our plants had enough electricity
- 1:09Speaker 1: to serve in state customers and sell the excess. Those
- 1:13Speaker 1: exports generate revenue. Dollars that ultimately and largely flow back
- 1:18Speaker 1: to West Virginia rate payers, helping offset costs when utilities
- 1:22Speaker 1: need to buy power. Yes, energy markets are complicated, but
- 1:25Speaker 1: this is one reason West Virginia participates in a regional
- 1:29Speaker 1: market like PJAM instead of operating alone like Texas does
- 1:33Speaker 1: with URKAT. That flexibility matters, the ability to both buy
- 1:36Speaker 1: and sell power matters, and looking ahead, electricity demand is
- 1:41Speaker 1: only going to grow, driven by artificial intelligence, data centers,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and uses we haven't even imagined yet. Expanding both regulated
- 1:50Speaker 1: and merchant generation allows West Virginia to do what it's
- 1:53Speaker 1: long done best, responsibly produce energy and sell it into
- 1:57Speaker 1: transparent markets with clear rules. That means jobs, a broader
- 2:02Speaker 1: tax base, and real opportunity. So while the snow and
- 2:05Speaker 1: ice may be disrupting your day, they're also a reminder
- 2:09Speaker 1: of West Virginia's strength as an energy exporter and an
- 2:12Speaker 1: opportunity worth protecting. Stay safe out there,
