- 0:28Hello and welcome to the Becker's Healthcare podcast.
- 0:31My name is Chanel Banger recording live at
- 0:33the Becker's third annual Spring Payer Issues Roundtable
- 0:36and sitting down with Samuel Wollner, the Vice
- 0:39President of Strategy and Partnerships at EmblemHealth.
- 0:42Sam, thank you so much for joining me
- 0:44today. Thanks for having me, Chanel. Perfect. While
- 0:46we get started, could you please introduce yourself
- 0:48and share a bit about your organization?
- 0:50Sure. So my name is Sam Wollner. I'm
- 0:52the vice president of strategy and partnerships at
- 0:54EmblemHealth.
- 0:55EmblemHealth is a not for profit health plan
- 0:58headquartered in Manhattan in New York City.
- 1:01We have, been in existence since the nineteen
- 1:03thirties in the, height of the Great Depression
- 1:05when we were founded by mayor Fiorello LaGuardia,
- 1:08who some may be familiar with from the
- 1:09airport in New York City.
- 1:11We were founded with the mission of serving
- 1:13hardworking New Yorkers and keeping them from financial
- 1:16misfortune in the event of accident or illness.
- 1:19And, we're still on that mission today. We've
- 1:21expanded it a bit. We own a physician
- 1:23group. But overall, we're,
- 1:26$6,000,000,000
- 1:27in top line revenue.
- 1:29We have about 2,000,000 members.
- 1:31We're in all lines of business, and so
- 1:33about one in four New Yorkers actually receives
- 1:35their insurance,
- 1:36through EmblemHealth.
- 1:37And, our physician group, Advantage Care Physicians, sees
- 1:41roughly a half a million patients,
- 1:43for primary and specialty care every year.
- 1:46So we're a a highly New York focused
- 1:48organization.
- 1:49We like to think of ourselves as being
- 1:51not just in the community, but of the
- 1:52community, and I'm no exception. I'm a born
- 1:54and raised New Yorker. I've been with EmblemHealth
- 1:56for four years. I lead, strategic planning,
- 2:00corporate partnerships,
- 2:01and a, a small group that focuses on,
- 2:04organizational alignment around strategic initiatives that we call
- 2:06strategy implementation.
- 2:08Got it. Thank you so much for that
- 2:09introduction. Now moving forward into the meat of
- 2:11the podcast, addressing health equity has become a
- 2:14critical focus
- 2:15for many health plans.
- 2:17Can you share an overview of a key
- 2:19initiative here that you're involved in or particularly
- 2:22excited about, and what are you hoping to
- 2:24achieve?
- 2:25Great.
- 2:27Happy to. So we're a we're a nonprofit
- 2:29health plan. As I mentioned before. Our commitment
- 2:30is to our neighbors, and not to shareholders.
- 2:33And so health equity is one way we
- 2:34honor that commitment.
- 2:36We have established a an executive role in
- 2:38the company, the chief health equity officer. His
- 2:40name is Abdu Ba.
- 2:42So that's our first initiative is establishing leadership
- 2:44around a commitment to health equity. The second
- 2:46thing I would mention is that we are
- 2:48the only health, plan in New York State
- 2:50who is who has received or earned an
- 2:53NCQA
- 2:54health equity accreditation,
- 2:56and that involves
- 2:58ensuring that we're collecting
- 2:59demographic data about all of our members,
- 3:02reporting on it, and making health equity part
- 3:04of our organization. So we're we're honored to
- 3:06be, accredited by NCQA for that. The third
- 3:09part I would mention is that,
- 3:12we have a a neighborhood
- 3:13level approach to to health equity. We have,
- 3:1630 locations
- 3:17that, that are physician group advantage care physicians
- 3:20delivers
- 3:21primary and specialty care at. And at many
- 3:24of those locations, we collocate,
- 3:27what we call EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care, which is
- 3:30staffed by,
- 3:31customer service folks that are really care navigators,
- 3:34that are able to
- 3:36point, both our members and community members, more
- 3:39broadly speaking, connecting them to community resources,
- 3:42classes on nutrition,
- 3:44well-being,
- 3:45and some exercise classes.
- 3:47Perfect. Well, moving forward, net promoter score is
- 3:50a powerful indicator of members' loyalty and satisfaction.
- 3:54How are you using NPS
- 3:56to drive meaningful improvements across your health plan?
- 3:59We look at NPS,
- 4:01regularly. Our our marketing team does a wonderful
- 4:03job of serving
- 4:04all of our stakeholders,
- 4:06for NPS scores. So not just our members,
- 4:09but also,
- 4:10the broker community as well as the provider
- 4:12community, all folks that we consider to be
- 4:14key stakeholders to our business and to our
- 4:15community.
- 4:16It's also embedded in our corporate incentive structure,
- 4:19so we're all, incentivized to be focused on
- 4:21it. And,
- 4:23finally, we use it when we review it,
- 4:25we we use it through to adjust our
- 4:27products. For example, we identified that,
- 4:30our dental solution was a pain pain point
- 4:32across many of our products and especially in
- 4:34the government programs business. So we're in the
- 4:36process of, enhancing that solution.
- 4:38So everyone's talking about how there's an imperative
- 4:41to reduce costs, improve quality,
- 4:44and advance health equity, none of which are
- 4:46small tasks. How do you approach aligning these
- 4:49priorities in your organization's strategic vision?
- 4:52Well, to begin with, we have a very
- 4:54structured strategic planning process.
- 4:56We work on setting objectives with measurable key
- 4:58results,
- 4:59and checking in on those quarterly and adjusting
- 5:01them as needed.
- 5:03But beyond kind of establishing the what we
- 5:05wanna achieve and aligning all those priorities, we're
- 5:07really focused,
- 5:09on building great teams,
- 5:11and having a cohesive leadership team work together
- 5:14because inevitably priorities,
- 5:18adjust,
- 5:18and you need to pivot. And it's incredibly
- 5:20important to have a cohesive team that works
- 5:22well together because then pivoting becomes, much more
- 5:25manageable.
- 5:26Absolutely. Well, Well, Sam, I wanna thank you
- 5:27for your time today. But before I let
- 5:29you go, I have one more question. Looking
- 5:31ahead, what do you see as the biggest
- 5:33opportunity for payers to lead the charge in
- 5:35transforming care delivery and driving better outcomes for
- 5:38all stakeholders? And how can leaders take a
- 5:40step in this direction now?
- 5:43Yeah. So what I would say is that
- 5:44health care to date has become largely
- 5:47a game of scale, and so the
- 5:50the winners and losers of this of the
- 5:52health care landscape have been determined by how
- 5:54large they've become. You might think about it
- 5:56as a battle of sumo wrestlers.
- 5:58We are
- 6:00thinking that the the next wave of health
- 6:02insurer and how we wanna win in the
- 6:03market
- 6:04is by being a care delivery partner and
- 6:06and an advocate for our stakeholders.
- 6:08So to be a true advocate for your
- 6:10stakeholder, you need to be,
- 6:12understanding of that stakeholder in in the community.
- 6:15So we no longer wanna differentiate purely on
- 6:18scale. We wanna differentiate
- 6:19based off of our community presence. So building
- 6:22off of things like AdvantageCare Physicians and EmblemHealth
- 6:24Neighborhood Care,
- 6:25having a a provider networking team that doesn't
- 6:28just do contract negotiations, but is also there
- 6:30to form
- 6:31meaningful relationships with the providers in our communities.
- 6:34So that's how I see us making the
- 6:36biggest impact moving into the future.
- 6:38Absolutely. Well, Sam, I wanna thank you once
- 6:39again for your time today and for joining
- 6:41me on the Becker's Healthcare podcast.
- 6:43Thank you so much, Janelle.
