An underground fire erupted Friday morning in the Johnston Square area, initially mistaken for a grass fire but quickly revealed to be gas-related after firefighters detected a strong odor. BGE was called in, and the response was upgraded to a second alarm. Residents were evacuated or told to shelter in place as emergency crews, Red Cross, and city agencies responded.
