- 1:44a lot to have people to really embrace
- 1:48and take this as part of their life
- 1:50every single day.
- 1:51Because, you know, ladies, gentlemen, I'm hearing this
- 1:53stuff and doing stuff.
- 1:54I think I think those are two different
- 1:56things.
- 1:56Right.
- 1:56People can do things every day.
- 1:58They can hear things every day, but they
- 1:59don't always do things, do they?
- 2:01And sometimes that happens for a lot of
- 2:03different reasons.
- 2:04By the way, if you have been here
- 2:07before or not and you've never heard about
- 2:09Believe Me Achieve dot com, don't forget to
- 2:11check that out.
- 2:12That's where you can get my short form
- 2:13content, my long form content, articles, reels and
- 2:16so much more.
- 2:18So definitely check that out.
- 2:21I think you will really appreciate that.
- 2:23We'll get into our show here in just
- 2:25a moment.
- 2:25If you're thirsty, feel free to go get
- 2:26yourself something, a beverage, hot, cold, a snack,
- 2:31whatever floats your boat.
- 2:33All right.
- 2:33So this is inspiration for your life, ladies
- 2:35and gentlemen, in case you did not know
- 2:36that.
- 2:37And our master topic for the week is
- 2:39protect your energy like it builds your future
- 2:42because it really does.
- 2:43This is series five show twenty six.
- 2:45And ladies, gentlemen, we're on.
- 2:47Yes.
- 2:48Episode number four.
- 2:49Understanding how elimination creates growth.
- 2:56And the theme about this is less is
- 3:00the strategy, right?
- 3:02Less is the strategy.
- 3:03But sometimes when we hear less, we get
- 3:06scared and we don't necessarily want to move
- 3:09forward because we're afraid of that.
- 3:10So welcome, everyone, to Inspirations for Your Life.
- 3:13Who am I?
- 3:14I'm John C.
- 3:15Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 3:20podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, passionate lifelong learner,
- 3:25graduate student at Montgomery State University.
- 3:28And so grateful now to be a published
- 3:31author.
- 3:31Once again, a big welcome to you.
- 3:33So today I'm focusing on the truth.
- 3:37Most people resist.
- 3:39I think when they hear the truth, they
- 3:41get scared because they realize a change might
- 3:44have to happen and they may not be
- 3:47ready for that.
- 3:49Growth is not only about addition, guys.
- 3:51It's about removal, OK?
- 3:53Because what you keep in your life shapes
- 3:57what you can build next.
- 3:59And a lot of people say to me,
- 4:00John, you know, I've done all this.
- 4:02This is great.
- 4:02But then what they find out is that
- 4:04they're stuck and they're stuck because they're committing
- 4:10to too many things.
- 4:12The core message here is this.
- 4:14Most people think progress comes from doing more.
- 4:19More effort, no, more tasks, no, more commitments,
- 4:23no, definitely no, no, no.
- 4:26Real acceleration comes from subtraction.
- 4:30When you remove what is unnecessary, you create
- 4:34space for what actually matters.
- 4:39Elimination is not lost, guys, it is clarity.
- 4:44It is clarity.
- 4:46And again, that could be hard for some
- 4:48people understand, but it is the truth.
- 4:49So let's get right into my 30 points
- 4:52for today to help you become better.
- 4:56So, number one, not everything in your life
- 4:59deserves to continue.
- 5:01And I'm not saying that to be mean
- 5:03or to be harsh.
- 5:04I'm saying that because I want you to
- 5:07have the best version of your life that
- 5:08you can actually have.
- 5:11Some things are simply past their usefulness and
- 5:15need to end.
- 5:17Number two, growth requires subtraction, not just addition.
- 5:22You cannot scale while holding unnecessary weight, OK?
- 5:27Even a proper general ledger, right?
- 5:32We have to do different transactions, right?
- 5:34Balance it, right?
- 5:36If we're going to debit our bank account,
- 5:38right?
- 5:40And, you know, we're going to credit something
- 5:42else, right?
- 5:44We have to have two sides.
- 5:47Number three.
- 5:49Some habits silently slow your progress.
- 5:51You don't even realize they're doing it.
- 5:53They feel small but compound into limitation over
- 5:56time.
- 5:57And this is another thing that robs us
- 5:59of the goodness of who we are, OK?
- 6:05And this is important for us to understand.
- 6:08Number four, guys, comfort can quietly block your
- 6:12next level.
- 6:14And I say this because a lot of
- 6:16people, you know what happens?
- 6:18They get complacent.
- 6:20And they feel they don't need to make
- 6:22any changes.
- 6:23And I think that's a I think that's
- 6:24an important thing to understand.
- 6:28They don't make any changes because they are
- 6:32so comfortable.
- 6:33That's the bad thing about being comfortable, gentlemen.
- 6:36It really is what feels easy, maybe what
- 6:39keeps you stuck your entire life.
- 6:42You know.
- 6:43When we understand that success actually builds in
- 6:50in the comfort of our lives, when we
- 6:53actually understand that, that's when our life actually
- 6:57changes, guys.
- 6:58It changes because that tell you that
- 7:08this is important for you to absolutely understand.
- 7:14And when you understand this, you're like, oh,
- 7:16my gosh, John, I get it now, I
- 7:18understand why this didn't work.
- 7:20I understand what's happening.
- 7:21But in the beginning, you're like, I have
- 7:24no clue what you're even talking about.
- 7:26And and that's completely normal.
- 7:29Number five, if something is not helping you.
- 7:33It is affecting you negatively.
- 7:37Neutral does not exist for long, because if
- 7:40something's not helping us neutral, it eventually can
- 7:43be, well, basically extra dead weight that you
- 7:46don't need.
- 7:47Number six.
- 7:49Honest time auditing reveals hidden waste.
- 7:52A lot of people don't like to audit
- 7:54their time.
- 7:55You don't have to share with anybody else
- 7:56but yourself, but they're like, oh, wait a
- 7:58minute.
- 7:58If I do that, then I'm going to
- 7:59actually see where I'm wasting my time.
- 8:01That's the key.
- 8:01That's the point.
- 8:02Most people underestimate where their energy goes.
- 8:05And then when you give them a tool
- 8:07to figure it out, they're like, oh, I
- 8:08don't really want to do that.
- 8:11Because once you figure it out, it's like,
- 8:15oh, I know where the problem is, but
- 8:16I really don't want to I don't want
- 8:19to embrace it.
- 8:20Right.
- 8:22And that's a whole horse of a different
- 8:24color.
- 8:24Right.
- 8:25When we know there's a problem and we
- 8:28don't want to embrace, I think that's a
- 8:30very, very big problem.
- 8:31Number seven, you must eliminate before you optimize.
- 8:37Improvement only works on clean systems, right?
- 8:41If you're painting, you can't paint unless it's
- 8:45all stripped down.
- 8:45There's nothing on it or the paint may
- 8:48not hold very well.
- 8:49Right.
- 8:50We always have to put a primer on,
- 8:51not that I'm an expert in painting.
- 8:53You put a primer on some as one
- 8:55or two coats and then you put the
- 8:56main coat on.
- 8:57And depending on the color, so we have
- 8:58to do one or two primers.
- 9:00Right.
- 9:00Then you could put your paint that you're
- 9:03going to use.
- 9:03Number eight, less noise.
- 9:05Noise creates more clarity.
- 9:07Reduction improves decision.
- 9:11Qualify it, qualify it.
- 9:14Number nine, bad routines compound, just like the
- 9:17good ones do.
- 9:19What you repeat builds your direction day in
- 9:22and day out and it becomes so.
- 9:26Autonomous, you're wondering how it's working, OK?
- 9:30I think that's an important piece that we
- 9:33don't always understand.
- 9:35OK.
- 9:37Number 10, stop negotiating with distractions.
- 9:41Well, you know, I can do this, just
- 9:44let's just turn mine up louder, turn that
- 9:47down.
- 9:47No, that's a distraction.
- 9:49Get rid of it.
- 9:50Right.
- 9:51I remember many years ago when I was
- 9:55doing something and somebody had the TV on.
- 9:57I'm trying to study and like, oh, I
- 9:59can do that.
- 10:01But really, I was hurting myself.
- 10:02So now something like that happens.
- 10:04I leave that room and I go somewhere
- 10:06else.
- 10:07I'll put headphones on if that doesn't work.
- 10:09I'll even ask the person, hey, you know,
- 10:11can you lower the TV?
- 10:13You lower the radio or I'll get up
- 10:15and I'll go somewhere else.
- 10:19Every negotiation weakens focus, so we want to
- 10:24be careful on the negotiations that we choose
- 10:27to commence.
- 10:29I think that's a very big problem, OK?
- 10:34And that's something a lot of people may
- 10:38never get in their life because they feel
- 10:42that they're on the right path.
- 10:44But really, guys, they're not.
- 10:48And they're eluding themselves the more that they
- 10:50do this day in and day out, right?
- 10:54Number 11, guys, removing what drains you increases
- 10:59your capacity.
- 11:01Energy is reclaimed through subtraction.
- 11:04Now, I know that sounds like weird, but
- 11:08it's the truth, because you see, guys, if
- 11:11you only have so much space, let's talk
- 11:14about your iPhone for a minute.
- 11:16Maybe you have so many gigs on your
- 11:18iPhone and you've taken so many gazillion pictures.
- 11:23And you have to get rid of some
- 11:25of those pictures so you could take more,
- 11:26or you have to move those off to
- 11:29more permanent storage, like you're going to go
- 11:32to the cloud or you're going to store
- 11:34it on your laptop or some other secondary
- 11:37storage device like an SSD, et cetera, right?
- 11:40Those are very, very important things to understand.
- 11:44So subtraction allows us to become successful.
- 11:48Number 12, simplicity scales faster than complexity does.
- 11:52Simple systems grow with less resistance, not more.
- 11:58Number 13, overcommitment destroys focus and execution.
- 12:06You know, when you commit to do something
- 12:08once, not a big deal, right?
- 12:10But I'm careful about what I put on
- 12:13my calendar as a repeat item.
- 12:18And the reason I do that is I
- 12:20don't want to put something down that could
- 12:24be a problem for me.
- 12:26So that's why, yeah, I'll do it this
- 12:29week, but I don't know if I'm going
- 12:31to continue doing it.
- 12:32Does that make sense?
- 12:34And so that's something I think we want
- 12:36to just protect ourselves with.
- 12:38So I don't put that on the calendar
- 12:40as an ongoing thing.
- 12:42I'll do it once.
- 12:43Too much commitment equals diluted results.
- 12:49I know lots of people that say, oh,
- 12:51I'm going to do this or I'm going
- 12:52to do that for you.
- 12:53And you know, when they don't do it,
- 12:54I don't get upset.
- 12:56But I just know that maybe they're overcommitted
- 12:59or they're really just not that.
- 13:03How can I say, interested in helping or
- 13:06even being a part of something so I
- 13:08don't lose sleep over that?
- 13:10All right.
- 13:11Number 14, protecting priorities requires constant elimination.
- 13:16What you protect determines your outcome.
- 13:20So protection is a very key thing in
- 13:23life.
- 13:23And when we learn how to protect, that's
- 13:27when we can change things.
- 13:30OK, that's when we can change things.
- 13:32And that's a very important thing for us
- 13:37to know.
- 13:38Right.
- 13:39That our life and what we choose to
- 13:43focus on and what we choose to protect
- 13:44will make a huge, huge difference in our
- 13:49life and lots of other people, too.
- 13:51Right.
- 13:52So I think that's a very important thing
- 13:56to be aware of.
- 13:58Number 15, guys.
- 14:01Hard choices today create easier futures.
- 14:05You know, a wise person once said to
- 14:08me, John, do the hard stuff first because
- 14:12the easy stuff will be so easy after
- 14:14that.
- 14:15A lot of people do the easy stuff
- 14:17first and then they try to tackle the
- 14:20hard stuff.
- 14:20But then they're a little burnt out.
- 14:22So do the hard stuff first.
- 14:24You got to take a break.
- 14:25You have to take a break.
- 14:26But do the hard stuff first.
- 14:27And that momentum is going to push you
- 14:30to do the other easy stuff.
- 14:32So hard choices today will create easier futures.
- 14:36So let's start embracing those.
- 14:39OK, disciplines now reduce chaos later.
- 14:43Right.
- 14:44So I think a lot of people are
- 14:46concerned that if they're disciplined, that they're going
- 14:48to make a mistake.
- 14:50Well, you can't do any worse than what
- 14:52you did before.
- 14:53OK, can't do any worse than you did
- 14:58before.
- 14:59And that's another another important thing to realize.
- 15:02Number 16, easy choices today create harder futures.
- 15:09So you have a choice right now, my
- 15:11friends, you can do something easy or you
- 15:14could do something hard.
- 15:18So you do something hard.
- 15:20Your future is going to be easier.
- 15:23Do something easy.
- 15:25Your future is going to become hard.
- 15:27Shortcuts often delay guys progress.
- 15:31And that's a fact.
- 15:32We've learned this so many times.
- 15:36That's the case.
- 15:38And if we know this, my question is,
- 15:41why do we keep trying to do the
- 15:44simple things like why?
- 15:47If we know that doing the hard stuff
- 15:50makes it easier later, why do we want
- 15:52to do the easier things now so we
- 15:53have it harder?
- 15:54Like that doesn't make sense to me.
- 15:57Number 17.
- 15:59Cutting quickly is better than delaying decisions, right?
- 16:05Whether that's somebody on your team, whether that's
- 16:08a task habit.
- 16:11Once you figured out that that task is
- 16:13not beneficial to you in your life, don't
- 16:16do it anymore.
- 16:17The prolonged indecision will drain your energy so
- 16:21fast.
- 16:22What I've learned is that you can do
- 16:24more things in your life, but you've got
- 16:27to have balance.
- 16:31You've got to have balance.
- 16:32If you don't have balance, then that's a
- 16:35big problem.
- 16:37Right.
- 16:38When you're balanced, today was a busy day
- 16:40for me.
- 16:41I had a lot of stuff I was
- 16:41doing.
- 16:43And a while back, I'd be like, oh,
- 16:44that's a lot.
- 16:45When it's balanced.
- 16:49I wasn't tired today.
- 16:51And I went to three meetings and they
- 16:54were all, well, not 10 minutes apart.
- 16:58Some of them were like a half hour,
- 16:59an hour or more apart.
- 17:02And everything just sort of went with the
- 17:04flow.
- 17:05Right.
- 17:06Number 18.
- 17:08Your environment shapes your behavior.
- 17:10We've said this before.
- 17:13Surroundings influence outcomes more than intention.
- 17:15So what I tell you to do if
- 17:18you work from home or what have you,
- 17:20I tell you to make sure that your
- 17:22working environment is exactly the way you want
- 17:26it.
- 17:27Do you have a good comfortable chair?
- 17:29Is your desk set up properly?
- 17:31Many of you guys know here is when
- 17:33I do my cast.
- 17:34I have my stand with my fan in
- 17:36it and I'm sitting back.
- 17:38I'm comfortable.
- 17:38My mic is here.
- 17:39My other lights are here.
- 17:41My soundboard's over here.
- 17:42So everything is right the way I need
- 17:44it.
- 17:45My special mouse is here.
- 17:47My ergonomic pad, everything's the way I want
- 17:49it.
- 17:49And I'm comfortable in this environment.
- 17:52And I'm able to be more productive in
- 17:54it.
- 17:55Number 19.
- 17:58Upgrading your standards changes your direction.
- 18:03Many people do not want to upgrade their
- 18:06standards because they are afraid of what they're
- 18:11going to have to do next.
- 18:12They're completely afraid.
- 18:15Right.
- 18:16Higher standards, guys, eliminate.
- 18:20Lower.
- 18:22Outcomes, higher standards might exclude some people, may
- 18:30make it harder, but one thing you're not
- 18:33going to.
- 18:34Go back on.
- 18:37Is how you set that standard, I think
- 18:39that's the one thing that you will never,
- 18:41never go back on is how that standard
- 18:45will come to you.
- 18:46If you understand that, then I feel that
- 18:49your life could change.
- 18:53But you really got to get this.
- 18:55OK, you got to get the fact why
- 18:58we have standards.
- 18:59It's not to discriminate.
- 19:00It's to have the right people in your
- 19:03organization or in your group or in your
- 19:06friendship circle.
- 19:07Right.
- 19:07You just pick anybody.
- 19:09No.
- 19:09So you can pick your friends, but you
- 19:12can't pick your family.
- 19:13Right.
- 19:14So when you pick your friends, how do
- 19:18you pick them?
- 19:19You pick people that are good to you.
- 19:21You pick people have commonalities with you.
- 19:24You pick people to support you in the
- 19:26good times and the bad.
- 19:29But many people.
- 19:32Don't do that.
- 19:35They look at one thing like, oh, this
- 19:36is a great person to be with.
- 19:38Or they judge it based on what they
- 19:40have.
- 19:42I'm not what's really going to be.
- 19:45Healthy in the relationship.
- 19:48Number 20, guys, tolerating mediocrity slows your growth.
- 19:53You know that what you accept defines your
- 19:56ceiling.
- 19:57That's the key, guys.
- 19:58I said what you accept.
- 20:01So if you choose not to accept something,
- 20:04you can change.
- 20:07No one says you have to accept it.
- 20:10You can reject it just like when you
- 20:11get a package, you can reject it.
- 20:14Number 21, anything that drains you must be
- 20:18questioned.
- 20:20Maybe the draining is something to happen because
- 20:22of a circumstance.
- 20:23It could be an emergency.
- 20:25It could be something wacky, but that's the
- 20:27whole thing.
- 20:28Energy loss is a signal, not noise.
- 20:34And so when we notice that our energy
- 20:37is low, right.
- 20:39From years ago when this happened, I'm like,
- 20:41oh, I'm tired, I can't do anymore.
- 20:43And now I realize it's the way I'm
- 20:47carrying my day, my energy.
- 20:50And I started to understand that.
- 20:53My day didn't tire me out anymore.
- 20:56Did I do more or less work?
- 20:58No.
- 20:59But I wasn't tired out because I was
- 21:03allowing my energy to flow with it.
- 21:06Rather than trying to basically go against it.
- 21:11Number 22, you cannot grow by holding everything.
- 21:15So realize you're going to have to let
- 21:17something go.
- 21:18OK, expansion requires space.
- 21:21If you know that, why don't you prepare
- 21:23for it now?
- 21:25Number 23, letting go creates room for advancement.
- 21:30Release is part of progress.
- 21:33I know when I was younger, I never
- 21:34wanted to release anything because I felt if
- 21:36I released something that I wouldn't be able
- 21:38to get something else.
- 21:39But the truth is, you can actually get
- 21:41more when you release.
- 21:44Number 24.
- 21:47Being selective with time and people is a
- 21:51power skill.
- 21:53OK.
- 21:55Time control equals life control.
- 21:59I want to go a step further and
- 22:01say that energy control equals life control.
- 22:06Well, how do you deal with that?
- 22:09When somebody you know around you, whether it's
- 22:11a stranger or somebody you know, is draining
- 22:15your energy, you need to excuse yourself from
- 22:19the table.
- 22:19You need to leave.
- 22:21Now, whether you're sitting at the table or
- 22:22not doesn't matter.
- 22:22I'm just doing that proverbially.
- 22:24You want to leave that situation.
- 22:26You want to do it as politely as
- 22:28possible.
- 22:30If you feel like you want to give
- 22:31an explanation, I appreciate your explanation and I
- 22:35don't agree with you and I have to
- 22:36get going.
- 22:37Or you could just get going if you
- 22:39want.
- 22:39You don't have to be 100 percent polite.
- 22:42That's up to you guys.
- 22:44Number 25.
- 22:45Not everything requires emotional closure.
- 22:49Some things end without an explanation.
- 22:52I've had that happen in my life.
- 22:54People leave.
- 22:56Maybe you have an idea of why they
- 22:57left.
- 22:59Maybe the energy wasn't balanced right.
- 23:03I don't want to talk about it.
- 23:06The more you focus on that, the more
- 23:09you're going to drain the energy you have
- 23:10to do something good.
- 23:12Number 26.
- 23:14Moving on quickly preserves energy.
- 23:18The speed of release will improve the clarity.
- 23:23And once you've done it once, you'll do
- 23:27it again.
- 23:27And again and again.
- 23:29And the more you do that, the more
- 23:31you go, Oh, my gosh, this is so
- 23:32easy.
- 23:33It's so simple, but it takes time to
- 23:39understand.
- 23:41It takes time to be part of the
- 23:46experience.
- 23:47This is something you're going to read the
- 23:48book.
- 23:49It's not something I'm just going to tell
- 23:50you.
- 23:51If I tell you, you're going to have
- 23:52to experience it before you're going to know
- 23:55it.
- 23:56Does that make sense?
- 23:58A lot of things like that are in
- 24:00life, somebody could tell you something and you'll
- 24:04get it, but it won't really click until
- 24:08it does.
- 24:12Number 27.
- 24:15Decisions must lead to action, not more hesitation,
- 24:19not more procrastination.
- 24:21Execution is where progress lives.
- 24:25It lives nowhere else.
- 24:28OK, I think that's an important one for
- 24:29us to understand.
- 24:30Number 28.
- 24:32Energy saved.
- 24:35Becomes progress gained, energy saved, becomes progress gained.
- 24:43Maybe you need that for another day.
- 24:46I found that.
- 24:49You know, when you do certain things, you're
- 24:50like, oh, why did that happen?
- 24:51How did that happen?
- 24:53One day this happens a lot is in
- 24:55travel.
- 24:55So I think it was the other day.
- 25:00So today, as you know, well, it's Tuesday's
- 25:03show, but we're actually going into Wednesday because
- 25:06I'm doing this a little late.
- 25:08Monday's day, believe it or not, was a
- 25:11little tiring and I'll tell you why.
- 25:13Now, I didn't have to go any further
- 25:17than I did today.
- 25:19I went a lot further today on Tuesday.
- 25:21I had things I had to do in
- 25:22the morning.
- 25:23I had to go somewhere.
- 25:24I had a few stops to do.
- 25:26They weren't further away, but I felt more
- 25:28tired.
- 25:29Tell you why.
- 25:31The weather and there was bad weather today,
- 25:34too.
- 25:34So I can't say that it was my
- 25:37energy.
- 25:40And I make adjustments to say, wait a
- 25:42minute.
- 25:42I need to adjust that energy so that
- 25:45it'll be better.
- 25:46So tomorrow will be different.
- 25:49So on Monday, I had to do something
- 25:52and I don't think I got home till
- 25:53maybe like four thirty or five o'clock
- 25:56today, I didn't get home till maybe eight
- 25:59o'clock.
- 26:00But I wasn't as tired.
- 26:04Yes, it was like, oh, my gosh, I
- 26:06just want to do what I have to
- 26:08do and wrap up and go to sleep
- 26:10tonight.
- 26:11I'm like, OK, I got to do things
- 26:12I have to do and then I'll go
- 26:13to sleep.
- 26:13But it's not like I'm rushing to get
- 26:16into bed tonight.
- 26:18OK, of course, I want to get to
- 26:19sleep, but you get my point.
- 26:21So energy has a way.
- 26:25Of either basically allowing us to continue.
- 26:31And feeling as though we have it or
- 26:33it has a way of like.
- 26:36Depleting us.
- 26:38And this happens.
- 26:40Because of the people were around now.
- 26:44Well.
- 26:45You could be a lot of different places
- 26:46and you may not even say anything.
- 26:49And this is something I realized, the people
- 26:52you are around will either drain you or
- 26:56empower you.
- 26:58Now, I was in the morning, I was
- 27:00actually at church, but.
- 27:03The morning had these people around me.
- 27:08And I felt drained that I didn't know
- 27:11that when I was there, but their energy
- 27:14drained, so what I've got to work on
- 27:16is allowing their energy to just bounce off
- 27:20of me.
- 27:23That's important.
- 27:24Because I was wondering, I started the day
- 27:27at like.
- 27:28I don't know, six, seven in the morning
- 27:29today, I started the day at.
- 27:33Maybe eight or nine.
- 27:35Few hours difference, but I was very tired
- 27:38on Monday.
- 27:39And I said, why?
- 27:42And I said, it's the people I was
- 27:43around.
- 27:44It was the energy.
- 27:47And energy really is part of us.
- 27:50We are energy beings.
- 27:53Energy does affect us quite a bit.
- 27:57And it compounds over time.
- 27:59Number twenty nine, removing the wrong things makes
- 28:04room for the right ones.
- 28:07OK, space determines opportunity.
- 28:09Whenever we remove something, a void happens and
- 28:13it's immediately refilled again.
- 28:18It's automatically filled again.
- 28:24That's a very important thing to understand.
- 28:28Number thirty.
- 28:30Elimination is not loss, it's advancement.
- 28:33What you remove defines what you can build.
