- 1:38Yours Truly Johnny Doller, brought to you by the financial support of our listeners,
- 1:42The Killing Matter, Part five from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny
- 1:49Deller. Johnny, Oh, I was just gonna call you. Pete Steimer
- 1:55is dead. A few minutes ago. He almost regained consciousness for a few
- 2:00seconds and that was all. There's no chance to question him. Yeah,
- 2:05he might have been able to clear it up for us. I think maybe
- 2:07it is cleared up, Johnny, or will be at least in the next
- 2:09hour. What do you mean we picked up Marty midnight? When where a
- 2:13few minutes ago at the bus teap over the ticket for San Diego in her
- 2:15hand. I haven't talked to her yet. They're holding her downtown headquarters.
- 2:20Why don't you meet me there? Wine right away? Looks like to wind
- 2:22up, Johnny. I hope, so, I really hope so tonight and
- 2:34every weekday night Bob Bailey in the transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action
- 2:38Packed Expense Account, America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator. Oh it's Juley Johnny Doller.

- 3:02Account, final page ADEM twelve A dollar and sixty cents taxi from Queen of
- 3:08the Angel's Hospital to police Headquarters and Interrogation Room nine. The police clerk showed
- 3:14me to the observation and a roman left. I paused for a moment.
- 3:17It looked in through the one way mirror window. Serge and Rhinosa was already
- 3:22there, and the girl Mightty Midnight sat facing him across a plain wooden table.
- 3:25He was glancing through the arrest file and apparently hadn't started to question her
- 3:29yet. She was younger than i'd expected, out over twenty two or twenty
- 3:32three, and she was obviously scared, but her face was set and ready,
- 3:38sullen defiance. I tapped on the door, and the jail matron lit
- 3:42me in. Oh, come on, Johnny, take that chair if you
- 3:47will. Thanks. When do I get to see a lawyer? You go
- 3:57into the name Mighty Midnight. That's right, I said, what's your real
- 4:00name? How long have you been in Los Angeles? Where'd you live before
- 4:06that? You see? We got hold of here, Johnny. Yeah,
- 4:12I see one of those wise winds. Or so she thinks, if you're
- 4:15ever arrested, keep your mouth shut. Somebody told her that back along the
- 4:18line. She thinks it's good advice. I want a lawyer. Don't talk
- 4:20they can't pin anything on you. She believes it. She'll probably still believe
- 4:25it right at the door of the gas chamber. I haven't done anything.
- 4:28You've gotta let me see a lawyer. It's a law. You'll see one
- 4:30at the usual time. I know that law too, Marty, and you're
- 4:34not being deprived of any of your legal rights. What's your real name?
- 4:42And I guess we'll have to contact your folks and see if they have any
- 4:45influence. Contact my folks. Who are they? Go on, tell me,
- 4:48well, let's see. Oh yes, mister and missus John R.
- 4:54Jack Lyon of San Diego at four two, and your name is or was
- 4:59Jane low End jack Lyne. Don't let my folks know. Please, I'll
- 5:03talk, Sargeant. I'll answer anything you want to know if you just won't
- 5:06use my real name, if you won't let my folks find out, please.
- 5:12Suddenly she was just a frightened kid, not a hard boy, a
- 5:15little carus pony, a nightclub stripper, but only a scared girl who didn't
- 5:18want her folks to find out. She kept her head down, and she
- 5:21answered Rainosa's questions her eyes lord like a repentant school kid who had been caught
- 5:26playing hockey, and I remembered the charge here was murder. Did you know
- 5:30that Eddie Calyn was married when you started going around with him? Not at
- 5:33first, and lady, you found out, but you kept on going with
- 5:36him. Well, he said he was getting a divorce. He said he'd
- 5:40been trying to get free of his wife for six months, but she wouldn't
- 5:43let him. Did you believe that? Well, yes, I don't know.
- 5:47I didn't until he came here that night. He said we're going to
- 5:51run away to Mexico together, the night he killed Mike Kelso. Yes,
- 5:56but I told you I didn't know about that until two days later. And
- 5:59it was self defense, honest. Mike was trying to hold him up to
- 6:02get back the money Eddie won in that poker game. It was self defense.
- 6:06Why did Eddie go into hiding, Well, I told you that too.
- 6:10It was his chance to get away from Lila. Where were you going
- 6:14when the police arrested you over there in the bus station, San Diego,
- 6:17Do my folks? Nobody here? Every knew me by any name except Marty
- 6:21Midnight. I didn't think you could trace me, and you didn't want to
- 6:27be traced well of course not. I came back and saw the police car
- 6:30at my apartment, and I knew you'd found Eddie. I didn't want to
- 6:33be mixed up in it. Why'd you kill him? Marty kill who Eddie?
- 6:42It wasn't Eddie. It was Mike Kelso. Eddie's the one who killed
- 6:46him in a fight. I told you that it was Oh, but you
- 6:47know it wasn't Eddie. You picked him up at my apartment, didn't you
- 6:51sure we picked him? I'm in a basket. What he's across the street
- 6:56to the morgue. Why did you kill him? Marty didn't kill anybody.
- 7:00I didn't know Edny was dead. I was coming home and I saw the
- 7:02police car. I thought you'd found him, that's all. I didn't know
- 7:06he was dead. I didn't kill him. You gotta believe me. I
- 7:09didn't know anything about it on it, honest, Marty Midnight's sharp, hard,
- 7:16tough, strict, teased dancer who had been around knew all about it.
- 7:20Marty Midnight, a scared, sobbing little child. Honest crossed my heart
- 7:27and hope to die. Well, maybe she wouldn't. I left a few
- 7:31minutes later, and Sergeant Brainoso walked out with me to get a breath of
- 7:34air. It was a cold, gloomy night with a gray dawn just ahead.
- 7:40Three people were dead, and in the Great Stone building we walked out
- 7:44of, the machinery was grinding away, getting ready to take the life of
- 7:46a fourth one. Well, I guess i'd better get back inside. Jenny
- 7:51all right, search lab boys making a paraffin test. You know it's too
- 7:57bad. She's just a kid. Yeah, I was helping it beat Tapo
- 8:01Lanley that I'd love. He's long overdue. Well, he's still on the
- 8:05loose. It's a kid up there. You know it, and I know
- 8:11it, And anything else is just wishful thinking. That witness saw her leave,
- 8:15saw her wipe off the gun, throw it back into the apartment.
- 8:18Yeah, I know. Well, where'll you be, Johnny, hotel on?
- 8:22Not for a while. I'm gonna stop by Lilac Kailin's At this time
- 8:24of night, I should be waiting up. I promised her i'd see her
- 8:28and tell her what happened. She's taking quite a beating out of this miss.
- 8:33Why did they do it? Johnny? Why did Dames fall for a
- 8:37guy like Eddie Kaylin? Philosophy At this time of morning. I'll see you
- 8:41later. Expense account IDEM thirteen two dollars and eighty cents taxi fair to the
- 8:50August Terrace apartments to talk to the widow and beneficiary Lila kiln Oh, Johnny,
- 8:58come on in, thanks, lyman. I've been sitting in here in
- 9:03front of the fireplace all night long. I'd almost given you up. Well,
- 9:05a lot of things happened, really beat coffee or a drink? Coffee?
- 9:13I guess black? Is Is it all over now? Johnny? Well?
- 9:20And I'm answer that they've apparently got the killer that Giry was hiding out
- 9:24with Morty midnight. She's a stripped tease dancer. Why why did you do
- 9:28it for money? I suppose they haven't found it yet, but they will.
- 9:33Did your coffee? Oh? Thanks? I feel sorry for maybe because
- 9:39I feel sorry for myself or anybody who ever got mixed up with Eddie?
- 9:45Why do we do it? Johnny? Why do we go blind when a
- 9:46guy like that comes along? Hi? I don't know. You tell me.
- 9:52I wish I knew maybe A girl I mean yesterday evening had a tag.
- 9:58She said she knew Eddie was always lying. He made it sound so
- 10:03exciting. He did. I had four years of it, never knowing when
- 10:09he'd walk out and not come back, never knowing who he was with,
- 10:13knowing only one thing for sure. But he was lying to me every hour
- 10:18of the day. Now that it's over, I wonder why I went through
- 10:22with it. But he did make it sound exciting. Well, the best
- 10:26thing you can do, Lyland. As soon as it's cleared up. Who
- 10:30can that be? It might be sergeant right now, so I told him
- 10:33i'd be here. Hello. Oh, yes, just a moment, you
- 10:37were right? Thanks? Yeah, hold on your hat, Johnny, it's
- 10:43wide open again. What do you mean negative? What Marty Midnight hasn't fired
- 10:48a gun in the last two days? She was telling the truth witness and
- 10:52no witness. So it looks like top. Wait, what was Marty wearing
- 10:58when they picked her up at the bus people? Why the same thing she
- 11:03was when you saw a skirt and sweater? Did she have a coat on?
- 11:05Short jacket? What are you getting at hey? Johnny? You're still
- 11:11there? Oh? Sorry, I was thinking, and it is sergeant.
- 11:16Can you come out here right away the Lilah's place? Why it's important,
- 11:20believe me, all right, Johnny? Right away? What Johnny Lilah with
- 11:28a cool black hair. It's beautiful, thank you, Johnny. Pe Peter
- 11:35has black hair too, Mighty Midnight Eddy, only light dark hair girl.
- 11:39But Marty didn't have a white raincoat. I'll bet you do, though.
- 11:45What where is it here in the closet? John what's all about? A
- 11:52witness saw a girl leave Marty's apartment right after the shots, but it was
- 11:54dark and all the witness could make out was the black hair and the white
- 11:58raincoat. What do you mean? And I saw the girl wipe off a
- 12:01gun on the front of her coat, then throw it back into the apartment
- 12:03and run. There are smudges on your raincoat, Lallah, it's greats off
- 12:07the door of the car. Supposedly you haven't been out of this place since
- 12:11I talked to you yesterday evening, but it hadn't started to rain then,
- 12:15and the coat's damp. Why did you kill him? You out of your
- 12:18mind? Johnny? Are you honey? Renos is on his way out here.
- 12:22They'll make a paraffin test and prove you fired a gun. They'll probably
- 12:24dig up the taxi driver who took you out there. They'll search the place
- 12:28here find the money. Was that it the money. Was that why you
- 12:33killed him? Oh, I didn't need to. When I went out there
- 12:43yesterday evening, while I was talking to you, I suddenly wondered if it
- 12:46might not have been somebody else's body in that car. I knew about Mighty
- 12:52Midnight. Of course I knew about all of them. After you'd gone.
- 12:58I went out there. I did until I saw pe time I leave.
- 13:01Finally, Mighty and I forced my way in. Eddie was furious. We
- 13:07argued and fought. Eddie drew a gun on me and threatened me with it's
- 13:11going to be a pet shant plea of self defense. That's it, Johnny,
- 13:16self defense, Well, good luck, you'll need it. Expense account
- 13:28Item thirteen, two hundred and sixty three dollars and thirty five cents incidentals,
- 13:31et cetera in Los Angeles and playing Fair back to Hartford. Expense account total
- 13:35five hundred and ninety six dollars and eighty five cents. End of expense account,
- 13:39end of report remarks. So the question still stands, why do they
- 13:46do it? Why do girls go blind? When the Eddie Klan's walk in?
- 13:52You might ask a strip teaser down at San Diego, but don't look
- 13:56for her under the name of Mighty Midnight. She's Jean Louaine Jackline. Now
- 14:01a quiet kid. What's at home with the folks? Yours Trulli Johnny Doller.
- 14:20Now here's our star to tell you about next week's intriguing story. Next
- 14:26week the case of a beautiful girl who refuses to see the man she loves
- 14:28as he really is a killer. Join us, won't you? Yours Tully
- 14:35Johnny Doller. Yours Truly Johnny Doller, starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in
- 14:52Hollywood, written by Les Crutchfield. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone
- 14:58hurt In this week's cast where Virginia Gregg, Lucille Meredith, Alma Latton,
- 15:03Gloria Blondell, Howard mcneer, Harry Bartell, Peter Leeds and Byron Kane.
- 15:09Musical supervision by Amerigo Marino. Be sure to join us on Monday night,
- 15:15same time and station for another exciting story of Yours Truly, Johnny Duller.
- 15:22This is Roy Rowan speaking welcome back. I remembered that there was a twist,
- 16:22and we definitely got that towards the end. I think the role of
- 16:29the twenty two year Old was classically played one of these performances where there's a
- 16:36facade that's just absolutely stripped away by the reality and gravity of the situation.
- 16:44Those remain among some of my most of the best radio performances because it does
- 16:48require some real depth from the actress. So very very sharp twist here.
- 17:00All right, Well, now, let's go ahead and take a lesson to
- 17:06part four of The Widow is Willing Cartern brown Mystery Adventures in Excitement and Suspense,
- 17:27based on the best selling novels by the slick storytelling sensation Carter Brown.
- 17:47Have you ever felt a nice tipped finger hit the base of your spine and
- 17:49slide all the way out to the back of your skull? Or how I
- 17:52felt when the three shots on the scream shadowed the silence in the Insurance Racket.
- 17:57They consider Mark Hunt a strong character in The Goldbride House. I considered
- 18:03Mark Count a scared kid. Mark Hunt wasn't arguing with me, How could
- 18:07he? He's me? When John Cross grabbed my arm and yelled frantically that
- 18:11it was Lilah who had screamed. My heart was in my mouth, my
- 18:15gun was in my hand Cross, and I ran for Lilah's room. La,
- 18:22she's not moving. You don't go off half cock cross. Let's take
- 18:25a look. What has happened? I heard trot and screamed. It sounded
- 18:29like Lila quickly open his Line's okay, she's still breathing. She's only fainted.
- 18:37Then, she has not been killed. There were three of them.
- 18:42Yeah, and if you look at the wall over the bed, you'll see
- 18:45where they ended up. She had a very lucky escape. How killing?
- 18:48How killing? A question is who is him? Yes? That is it?
- 18:52Who fired the shots? You have the nerve to answer that you murder
- 18:56and swine. Wasn't your fault those bullets. Miss. I'll take you apart
- 19:00with my bare hands, but I'm gonna save you for the police, the
- 19:03grad school. You are ready, stop it, both of you. Lalla's
- 19:07moving. It's all right, honey, everything's all right. What happened?
- 19:15It was dark? Door open, has so gone? That was shot?
- 19:18Don't finish now, Lada, And you're saying the shots Moss? Did I
- 19:23scream? Did you scream? Baby? You made more noise than a hula
- 19:27girl haddled on an iceberg. I suggest we all go downstairs. I think
- 19:32there's safety and numbers tonight an excellent idea. I would not fancy going back
- 19:37to my own room. Now, you don't have to worry. You wouldn't
- 19:40try to shoot yourself. More's the pity. Cut it out. Cross.
- 19:44Let's get downstairs as Beavers, says manage Lallahan. Yes, of course I
- 19:48can, John, I'll be all right now, Okay, you and Cross
- 19:52go first, Lallah and Beavis and the grad school. I'll bring up the
- 19:55rear with Leavis. Hang onto my arm, Darling, Thank you, Jo.
- 20:00I'm glad to be behind mister Cross with these crazy notions. I would
- 20:03rather not be in front of him. Well, let's know he was looking
- 20:06to me for protection. Never been the physical type. You can say that
- 20:10again, kid, Never minded disappointments made. It's listen to me, what
- 20:12Mark when we get downstairs. Anything I say about the photograph, you back
- 20:17me up. Why what are you going to do? Set a little snare
- 20:21for the killer, that's all. When we filed into the living room,
- 20:30someone realized it was breakfast time. But with the death of Clem Goldbright the
- 20:33night before, the hullabaloo with the police, the hours had been turned upside
- 20:37down. It was after everyone had eaten that I decided to try my idea.
- 20:42Ladies and gentlemen, I've got something to say. This situation can't go
- 20:47on any longer. I had intended keeping quiet little a police return some time
- 20:51tomorrow morning. That's impossible. Now, what are you talking about, Hunt?
- 20:56Keep quiet about what? Simply? This the identity the murderer? Yes,
- 21:02I know who the murderer is. Who who is it? Then?
- 21:07You may remember after Henry Goldbright's death, Mabus mentioned a photograph. I believe
- 21:14she spoke of it vaguely to everyone. I'm sorry, Mavis, I have
- 21:18to tell this story, yes, Marker. Of course, Mavis was on
- 21:22the jetty when Henry was killed, and she had a camera with her.
- 21:26She saw a figure on the back andy, but the distance was too great
- 21:27for her to recognize who it was. Being a keen amateur photographer, she
- 21:32automatically raised a camera and got a shot of the murderer. She was desperate
- 21:37for money, both she and Roger, so Mavis thought the murder would pay
- 21:40heavily for the photograph. She didn't care whether Henry's death was ever revealed as
- 21:44murder or not. She had no love for Henry as long as she obtained
- 21:47enough money to keep their business solvent. But I don't understand why did Mabus
- 21:52mention the photograph to everyone? Why not only to the murderer. Because like
- 21:55a lot of women amateur photographers, Mavis can take a picture, but she
- 21:57can't develop and print the film, so all she had was the exposed film.
- 22:03She didn't know who the murderer was. Then Mavis turned the film over
- 22:07to me. I can develop a film and printed, and once the film
- 22:12was developed, the murderer was known. Who is it? I think it
- 22:18better for everyone's sake if I don't tell you, then that must wait under
- 22:21Lieutenant Wilder and his men return in the morning. In the meantime, I'm
- 22:26going to my room. I shall stay there until the police arrive. I
- 22:30just want to add that I have a gun and I have no intention of
- 22:33sleep. That's all. And that was it, the trap set, bated
- 22:44and ready to snap. I didn't really feel as confident as I sounded,
- 22:48But there's one thing I've always believed, if you're gonna bluff, you might
- 22:52as well make it good. I left them, looking amazed and wondering,
- 22:56and went upstairs to my room. I checked my thirty too. This was
- 23:00no time to have a gun that was empty or was lightly the jam,
- 23:03and then I settled down for the long wait and a long way to turn
- 23:11out to be. All Through the rest of that day, I sat in
- 23:15my room and at one cigarette after another, and gazed at the view from
- 23:18my window. The sky changed from pearl to smokey to leaden gray. The
- 23:23water rippled and splashed and tumbled under the wind until darkness fell and I couldn't
- 23:27see anymore. I opened the window somewhere there was a faint glimmer of moon
- 23:36that, on the glow from my cigarette, made the only light in my
- 23:38room. I wondered if I'd die from nicotine poisoning before I had a chance
- 23:44to find out who the murderer was. The strain was stinging at my nerves.
- 23:48Against the sound of the wind, I heard the murmur of voices as
- 23:52the occupants of World's End went to their rooms to bed, all except one
- 23:56of them, I thought, and he or she would be waiting as I
- 24:00was. Till the house was completely still. The wind had changed its note.
- 24:17I looked at my watch in the darkness. It's luminous hands pointed to
- 24:19one thirty am. My eyes filled as though two pound lead weights were hanging
- 24:25from their lids. I had no sleep for about thirty six hours, and
- 24:29it was as much as I could do to keep them open. And then
- 24:32from behind me, from the window which I had left open, I heard
- 24:34a small sound someone was coming in. Don't try anything foolish by grabbing me
- 24:44a gun. I bow the drinker before you can hope to get it.
- 24:48Okay, the film the negative? Where is it? This is strictly for
- 24:52laughs. It doesn't exist. Don't start Where is it? I told you
- 25:00never existed. Sure, Maybus was there and she had a camera, but
- 25:03she never took the picture. You're a lie. It was a bait and
- 25:07you swallowed if it doesn't exist, and that's all I want to know.
- 25:14That puts me right in the clear dispense with you, and no one compented
- 25:18on me. You certainly put on a good act, a dumb college boy
- 25:22who'll never grow up grief and outrage when poor Lila was nearly killed. Only
- 25:27you never intended to hit it with those bullets, did you, Cross?
- 25:30You just wanted to make it look as black as possible for the Greschool of
- 25:36Goods. Rather clever of me. I thought I'll marry Lila get all the
- 25:41dough I won, and neither you nor anyone else's gonna stop me hunt.
- 25:45Maybe no one may be about it. That fool Beaver's girl had me worried
- 25:52whose notes we exchanged. I thought you really had got a photo. I
- 25:56would have paid for it too, But where was I going to get the
- 25:59money from. That's why I ignored a last note I hope to agreed would
- 26:03keep a mouth shut. I thought he knew who I was, and I'd
- 26:06realized that I'd have to wait to get the money. But will of Henry's
- 26:10must have uped sut your calculations a little when you realized Lila wasn't getting all
- 26:12the money your voice done. Yeah, it threw me for the boy.
- 26:18Then I realized that once I got rid of Clem, the whole estate would
- 26:22be Lila's, so it didn't matter very much. You don't think you'll get
- 26:26away with it, do you? But I will. There's nothing sure.
- 26:33I'm afraid we'll have to terminate this conversation. If you've any prayers, say
- 26:40them now. What's the ghost of Henry Goldbert? There's one thing about ghost
- 26:48voice timing is terrific, and you won't get away with it. There's one
- 26:53advantage about sitting in a room all day. You get to know it so
- 26:56well that it doesn't matter when it gets done. Get you that was your
- 27:00one chance to badge your miss the window. I'll take you with me,
- 27:07not if I can help me. Are you all right? We heard your
- 27:29voices. Yeah, I'm fine. It was a nice work, Roger.
- 27:33You turned it beautifully. I didn't know what to do for the best.
- 27:37We weren't asleep, that is, I would have been, but neighbors kept
- 27:41me awake when we knew the murderer was there. She thought of the ghost
- 27:45voice, drink and will. It worked like a charm. In fact,
- 27:48I hate to think where I'd be without it in eternity. Probably I don't
- 27:52know what I'm laughing for. Believe me, I wasn't laughing at the time.
- 27:56There's nothing funny about fighting for your life in the dark with a killer
- 28:00mark. What's been going on? Maybe it's made your wife I'm down line,
- 28:03it's all over. The guy who murdered your husband and your brother in
- 28:07Laura is down taking a drink a drink, yeah, in about fifteen fathoms
- 28:11of water. That screaming was mister John Cross diving out the window. He
- 28:18was the murder. John can't believe it. I'll never trust another man as
- 28:27long as I live, who wants to be trusted. I got different ideas,
- 28:33like what like a trip back to New York, preferably with a detour
- 28:38through Mexico allone, not exactly. I was thinking of asking a certain widow
- 28:45along for company. I'm just wondering what she'd say. I know what she'd
- 28:52said. The widow is willing. This is Carter Brown. I guess being
- 29:06an insurance investigator has its compensations for Mark Hunt anyway, and what a conversation.
- 29:11A beautiful blonde and with money. There's a blonde in my next book
- 29:15two, a story called meat a Body, but it's not the blondes,
- 29:18who belongs to a little guy named Jacob Finney. And a character who meets
- 29:22it is my hero. It's Sebastian Sure, a private detective. So this
- 29:25is Carter Brown saying so long for now. He's seen in The Widow is
- 29:49Willing. You heard Lynda Barber as Lila Goldbright, while as Mark Hunt,
- 29:53you heard our star Richard mikel A Carter Brown mystery theater based on the best
- 29:57selling novels by car A. Brown is dramatized and directed by Most Travelers for
- 30:03Grace Gibson Radio Productions. Welcome back. While we get the reason for the
- 30:17title at the end, I have some mixed feelings on this episode. The
- 30:26main thing is this is one where to me, the whole setup that we
- 30:33were attempting here just rang of obvious ruse. But maybe I should take hard
- 30:41and just write it off to Not all criminals are as perceptive as we might
- 30:49like, so probably in terms of endings, this has probably been one of
- 30:53the more realistic and reasonable ones. We'll be back next week with the car
- 31:03Brown story that was advertised because that one's missing. But we'll be back with
- 31:07another Carter Brown story next week, and also on Monday, we'll pick it
- 31:15up with another episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dowler. We do have one listener
- 31:19comment, this one from VB Tiger sixteen over on iTunes. Nice app has
- 31:26what I want to listen to. Well, it doesn't get much better than
- 31:30that. All right, Well, that we'll do it for today. We'll
- 31:33be back tomorrow with the lineup. In the meantime, send your comments to
