- 0:00Speaker 1: Name the artist before we tell you. Music's lost history.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Arrow Collins is back.
- 0:12Speaker 3: This is every bit the reason why I couldn't wait
- 0:14Speaker 3: to get up to Musicland and do everything I could
- 0:16Speaker 3: to get my hands on the next album. Because once
- 0:18Speaker 3: I ripped that album open and got to that inside sleeve,
- 0:21Speaker 3: I knew a lot more about the band. And here's
- 0:24Speaker 3: one of those bands that totally freaked me out because
- 0:27Speaker 3: I was just like anybody else. I thought they were
- 0:29Speaker 3: the typical hair band of the 1980s. They hail from Sacramento, California.
- 0:34Speaker 3: A mission, calling, or a brilliant plan was and still
- 0:38Speaker 3: is all about honesty, the blues... and acoustic instruments and
- 0:43Speaker 3: authentic musicianship. Their goal was to bring it back to
- 0:46Speaker 3: the main street of rock music. Now, most people don't
- 0:49Speaker 3: know this, But this five-member band kicked off their career
- 0:53Speaker 3: in January of 1981. At that point in time, it
- 0:56Speaker 3: was just the bass guitarist and the guitarist, and they
- 0:58Speaker 3: called themselves City Kid. Their infamous lead vocalist didn't make
- 1:02Speaker 3: his way into the band until three years later, and
- 1:05Speaker 3: with him, Tommy and Troy, which seemed to be a
- 1:07Speaker 3: great idea because they now had something to reach out
- 1:10Speaker 3: to the rock nation with. But first, we gotta have...
- 1:14Speaker 3: That name change. Oh, it worked. Signed to Geffen Records
- 1:18Speaker 3: in 1986, some critics called it perfect as well as
- 1:23Speaker 3: very dangerous in the way of instantly being dubbed just
- 1:28Speaker 3: another hair band. Mainly because of who they were touring with.
- 1:32Speaker 3: But musically? Oh, hell no. They were original with their
- 1:36Speaker 3: 70s style hard rock and blues.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Here's one more clue Hey, coming up next, this band,
- 1:58Speaker 2: do they get credit for creating MTV's Unplugged series?
- 2:02Speaker 1: Music's lost history Arrow Collins is back, back, back Name
- 2:22Speaker 1: the artist before.
- 2:28Speaker 2: We do.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Music.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Hey, thanks for coming back to Music's Lost History, the
- 2:34Speaker 3: Artist Edition. The Great Radio Controversy.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Uh-oh.
- 2:39Speaker 3: No, it was the name of their album. It featured
- 2:41Speaker 3: three songs that remain just as big today. Heaven's Trail,
- 2:45Speaker 3: The Way It Is, and Love Song. They were one
- 2:48Speaker 3: of very few hard rock bands that actually created a
- 2:52Speaker 3: huge emotional ballad that didn't interrupt their credibility. But, but, but, but...
- 2:57Speaker 3: It wasn't their greatest contribution. They were recognized as a
- 3:01Speaker 3: hard rock band, yet they would walk out on stage
- 3:05Speaker 3: with acoustic guitars. Nothing polished or carefully choreographed. They essentially
- 3:10Speaker 3: generated the presence of just being loose and spontaneous. The
- 3:15Speaker 3: song that they were carrying forward at that time was Signs,
- 3:18Speaker 3: originally recorded by the five-man electric band. Now, some have
- 3:22Speaker 3: credited Tesla for being the sole reason why MTV created
- 3:27Speaker 3: the Unplugged series. Remember that? Bassist Brian Wheat pushes that
- 3:32Speaker 3: idea way out of the way, literally explaining, we did
- 3:37Speaker 3: not create this movement. But the band Tesla did prove
- 3:41Speaker 3: you can turn down the volume and still... Listen in
- 3:45Speaker 3: on all of that great rock.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Music's Lost History.
- 3:50Speaker 3: I'm Arrow, and that's Music's Lost History, the Artist Edition.
