Latest / The People Run Podcast / #4: “Keep Showing Up. Do It Again Tomorrow.” - Mark on Running Consistency, Florida Heat & Daily Wins
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_02: I think for me, to do anything really i is consistency.
- 0:05SPEAKER_02: And that's the key to success, I guess, if I were to give anyone advice.
- 0:09SPEAKER_02: Because a lot of people ask me, I'm like, well, how do you do it?
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Hello and uh welcome to the People Run Podcast.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Fitz, and today I have a good, I'd say strive a friend of mine.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: We've been chatting for quite a while now here.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: A good friend of mine, Mark here out of Orlando, Florida.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: As you know, the People Run Podcast is about runners, everyday runners, and how we get it done, sharing those stories.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: And I was happy to ask Mark to hop on, who who runs pretty consistently in some pretty crazy hot weather out there in Orlando, but makes it look easy.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: You know, we'll talk about it some and let's get right into it.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Uh hello, Mark, and welcome on, man.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: I appreciate you jumping on.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: How you doing over there in sunny Florida?
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: I'm good.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: I'm good, man.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: It's it's a long day, but it's hot.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: It's still hot.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: You know, we didn't even talk about that.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: What's the temp over there right now?
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Right now, let's see.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: It is summer's coming, man.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: That's scary.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: It's 90 degrees.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, I don't run now.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: So for me, my rule of thumb is generally speaking, is if I I gotta get the run done or I gotta be in that last mile by the time the sun comes up, or else it ain't gonna happen.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: But I know that there are people here I see in on Strava that are out.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: They're they're night runners, you know.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: They'll they'll run after work.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, how are they doing this?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: I struggle with night, man.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, exactly.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: How do you do this, you know, in the dark?
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: I can't I can't do it.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: I need to get my run done.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: Everything has to be done in the morning.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: I'm like a morning person, way more productive with work and the run the fitness stuff, it all has to be done in that order too.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: It has to be fitness stuff, then work, and then whatever else.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Agreed for me.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: I look at it like pay yourself first, kind of like get it all out the hard stuff out the way, and then all right, let's go into the work grind and whatever else.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: Because nothing's gonna be harder than all that physical activity I just did.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: So hopefully work is easier.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Hopefully.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: And I find it hard, like for those people who night run to like, okay, I just went through work mentally, my fatigue is on, you know, mentally I'm drained, and then all right, let's go do uh right.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: Then you gotta go do an hour heavy lifting or running five, six, seven miles.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: Like what funny yesterday was there's a corporate 5k in Orlando.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: I was gonna ask you about that.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I saw.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, oh you saw that.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so last night there was like a big race.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: It's a yearly thing here in town where all the large companies participate.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: And so the company I work for participated, and I started doing this about three years ago, and I've been running for about five now since COVID.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: And so ever since I started doing this race, I'm like, man, this is so why do they do it at night?
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Like, I hate this.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: But when I get there, I'm like, okay, all these people are ready to go.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: I gotta, I gotta represent too.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: You know, I have Strava people following me.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: They're gonna see this and they're gonna be like, bitch, I'm here too.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: Let's see.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: And then the thing is, it's you know, I I still show up and I gave it everything I had, but it's not the same level, I think, as if they had this race at 6 in the morning or 7 in the morning.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: I feel like I would do much better if this race was in the evening, even though it's just a 5k.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Well, I I feel like I struggle.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Maybe you do, I don't know.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Like, I like coffee and caffeine, so like in the evening, I can't really drink caffeine if I'm trying to go to sleep.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: No way, man.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: And I'm already tired.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I cut the caffeine off, me personally, by 9 a.m., 10 a.m.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: I I take a pre-workout.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: I take a pre-workout in the morning when I first get up, and then I hit the gym, and then when after I hit the gym, I run, and then after the run, when I sit down to work, I have one cup of coffee, maybe.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: And that that I mean, that's it in terms of the caffeine.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: But otherwise, I'm doing like I still do soda and it's all sugar-free and caffeine free.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: I saw the goal that tells me caffeine.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh, yeah, it's like, oh, that's not the good one.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: It's not the good stuff.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: I thought you were gonna say dye coke, yeah, with a little caffeine in it.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Well, I want to ask you about the morning routine, but before that, real quick, because I saw the time.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: The time looked crazy, and it looks like you've had an insane week because I also saw a 10K.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: So what'd you finish in the work, uh 5K, and also talk to me about the 10K you recently did?
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: So, okay, so the last night that at the corporate 5K thing, you know, I I I kind of got screwed.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: The weather was bad, it was raining and it was pouring.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: I thought they might even cancel the whole race because there was lightning and stuff, but they didn't, and they delayed it a little bit, but it was just so crowded and hectic.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: I had to find my company's tent so I can get my bid.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: And I had a hard time finding the tent because they moved it.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: I thought I'd be in the same place as last year, and I don't read emails.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: You probably already know that.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I'm terrible of this.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: Just tell me where to be, I'll find it.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: And I I found it, but I was late, and so I hard I had a hard time getting to the starting line.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: And so I finally get to the starting line, and they're already singing the national anthem and stuff, so I'm at the back.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: There's a runners line and there was a walkers line.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: I was in accidentally in the walkers line because I didn't know.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: And so I'm I'm in the back, and so when the race started, you know, I I had to like maneuver my way kind of through because you know, I I need to get it not everyone's gonna be the same speed.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: And it's a huge, huge race here in town.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: So I found myself struggling the first mile just to get through all the people.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: So I didn't even know what my pace was, and so when I looked when it my watch told me, okay, you're at I think it was like 6 44 in my head, I was like, okay, I think I can keep this up.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: I think I can keep this up at least at least for two more miles.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: And you know what?
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: I guess my training I used the good shoes, my good shoes, which is the Sokany and Dorphin Elite 2.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: I call them my magic shoes.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: They're my favorite right now, so we can we can discuss that later.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure we will.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: But anyway, I used the good shoes and I just I didn't even really pay attention to the pace.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: I just knew that I was keeping it kinda consistent.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: And also in my head, I knew not everyone's gonna be able to keep this pace.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: So if I try and stay with other people, they don't I don't really know what they're doing, so I need to just focus on me right now.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: And so I managed to keep the pace.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: I think I finished at around 644 pace for the next two miles, too.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: So I think I finished right around there.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: It was like 21 minutes.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's not my best 5k, but it was good enough for me yesterday.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: And so let's see.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: There was it was a 10 miler, um, not a 10k.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, 10 miler, that's right.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's right.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: My bad, yeah.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: And that was that was a few days ago.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: That was last week on the over the weekend.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: And so that was a sand race over at Cocoa Beach.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: So that was a different, a different animal.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: I've done the race before, like three, I think three this is my fourth time, I think.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: And it's a fun one.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: It's a fun because it's all on sand.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: It's not a huge race, but I happen to like enjoy that race.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: I think it might be my favorite race outside of the there's an Orlando half marathon that I like too, but I I like the Cocoa Beach beach race.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: Cocoa Beach is about an hour away from here, and so that race, I knew that it was gonna be not the best conditions.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: The sand, because I'd been to the beach the week before, and the sand wasn't tightly packed.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: I mean it's packed, but it wasn't tight.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: Like, like, and when it's tight, it it's almost like you're on concrete.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: But yeah, this this year it was it wasn't that great.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: And so, and they also delayed the start by like I think it was like 15 minutes.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: So when the gun went off, I was near the front and I was having a hard time.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: Like after the first mile, I was like, okay, this is hard.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: There was a headwind because the race, the first it first of all, wasn't even 10 miles.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: They had to reduce it because they were doing something with the beach.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: It ended up being like eight miles and like point eight point seven five miles or something like that.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: But anyway, it it was there was a headwind, so we were going south, and there was a headwind.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: I'm like, this is difficult, the sand is soft, and I knew I was doing well because no one was passing me, but I knew it was because it was so difficult, and I was like, this sucks.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: I know that I can't be the only one thinking that this sucks right now.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: But on the turnaround coming back, there was like two people ahead of me.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: One was a woman, and she was just gone from the get-go.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: She was fast.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: I'm like, okay, she's fast, not catching that one.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: And then there was another guy, and I think he was older than me, and I saw him, and he like left me behind too.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: And so I was just like in alone, I think, for the rest of the race, for then for the next like four miles.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: I was by myself, but no one was passing me.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: But it was much easier on the way back and going north because there was no more headwind.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: And so really you're just maneuvering around people trying to get through them, trying to get back because they're still going the other way.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: Anyway, I ended up finishing the race third, second overall, men, and I was it was unexpected, but super happy about it because it's still second.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's why I saw you post it.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: I was like, whoa, he finished second on a 10-mile.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Uh granted, you know, cut short, but still, you killed it.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Happy about the result.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, of course.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: What'd you wear in the sand?
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: I'm curious now, like, because that's gotta be rough.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: You know, you never wear it.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: Ooh, very nice.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: They did okay.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: They did okay.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: I really I was it was either that or the um the vaporfly three.
- 9:29unknown: Okay.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: But you know, there's just something about that OG Alpha Fly where I feel like it gives you a little bit more bounce than the Vaporfly.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: Like, do I like the Vaporfly?
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: And I wear the Vaporfly for like all the marathons.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: I've never won, I've never run a marathon in the Alpha Fly.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: But I feel like the Alpha Fly still gives you a little bit, a little bit more, gives you a little something extra.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: I tried it for my first uh full New York, uh, what, two years ago now, and I was testing both.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: The three, the vaporfly three had just come out, and for some reason I don't have the best foot, like I'm flat footed, so like the arch was killing me on the ones, but I did love the bounce.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: I had like a couple 20 miles.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: I was like, man, I love it, but I ended up doing the vapor flies because it was a little less intrusive.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: The vapor fly or the alpha fly?
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: I ended up running the race in the vapor, but I was training in the alpha, hoping I could use the alpha.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: The three for both.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: No, sorry, let me backtrack the uh the OG Alpha.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: I had a pair that I hadn't worn.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: I had like a year with them.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: I didn't even try them.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: And then when I started training for New York towards the end, I was like, ooh, I'm gonna try these alphas, and like you couldn't get them anywhere.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: And mine were brand new.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was hard to get.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: Remember that?
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: I remember that.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they were hard to get, and and people even after the twos came out because no one wanted the twos, it was kind of hard to like find the ones, but I had a brand new pair that I hadn't worn yet, and I had to let them go because they didn't work for me, unfortunately.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: And I ran, yeah, I ran New York in the Vaporfly 3.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: In the Vaporfly 3, and you were pleased to wild decision at the time, yes, and I don't take it back, but it's not a shoe I recommend for anyone first marathon.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: First off, yeah, yeah.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: New York, brutal because of the hills and stuff.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Granted, if you have great foot mechanics and you're fast and and you've been training a while, great.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: It was just I I love them, I still have them now.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: It's probably gonna be a training shoe once I'm recovered, but like I wouldn't recommend expensive.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: Like you use them, yeah.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Like uh that that was a wild decision, but it was what was working for me at the time, and I did have a lofty goal, I guess, for New York.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: It was working on the long runs, and I was like, man, I'm just gonna go with the Vite Flat.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: And funny enough, they were brand new at the time, and now the fours are out, which is a whole nother story.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't have the fours yet, or if I'm gonna get them.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: I haven't decided if I'm gonna get them yet.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: We'll get the sneakers in a bit, but I did go to Japan recently and I stocked up because the yen is cheaper.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, really?
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: So you've got shoes over there.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Well, hell, we can come back to the work.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Let's talk shoe talk, I guess.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: But uh, shoes over there because I noticed they were cheap.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: I knew I was gonna buy something, right?
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: A6 to hold them in Japan and all that.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: Dealing with an injury, which I'm almost healed now, as you know, but um, I was like, I'm gonna buy some shoes here because of the yang, they're all like$40,$60 cheaper.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I kept going to these shoe stores.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: But that's awesome.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: That's a good one.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: I would have probably got more, which is uh a bad thing, but I went the week after Tokyo Marathon.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: It was just how the trip scheduled out.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: So stock, yeah.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Stock was kind of low on the side.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's what I'd be thinking.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: The shoes would be hot right now because all the runners are there.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: It's just like here, you got fall season marathon.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: If you don't buy your shoe a month in advance, good luck trying to find if you want a race day shoe, that is, you know?
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: So I kept going to places and shoe size was uh kind of scarce because the marathon and Osaka's the week before Tokyo, on top of that.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: So you literally have 20k runners back-to-back week in in Japan, you know, getting shoes, and also for standard Japan sizing, I'm kind of a Bigfoot, I guess.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: So that's also sizes they don't carry.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, I wear a size 10.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: There's more factors.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: There was more factors, but I found it anyway.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: I kept going to running stores and I was like, man, this is cool.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: And I went to ASICs, a couple flagships, and I also ended up going to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: So I kept finding different places.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: So I pretty much, funny enough, for an injured guy who's not even that fast yet.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Granted, I have some lofty goals for the end of the year, have all the new race shoes except for like maybe two, three, and it's just because they didn't have my size.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: I got the new Pumas from DV8 Nitro 3.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Not the Fast R 3.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Um, funny enough, I got a pair of fast twos over there on this count, but I didn't like them, so I I'm not even using them now.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: I have the the DV8 Nitro 3 Elite, the one that's not the Fast R one, though, the one that doesn't have the plate in the middle, the one where like everyone was using in the Olympics.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: It's it's the two flagship race shoes for Puma.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, well I have yet to buy a Puma running shoe, but they've been coming out of nowhere, and it seemed like a good shoe for those of us that like the vapor fly, but like a little bit more people are talking about it, so they're doing something right, I'm assuming.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: And you've tried it, they're light too.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: I tried it on foot.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: I obviously, you know, with injury haven't been able to run, but it is one of the shoes I think I may end up using just based on everything.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: For the race-wise, right?
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Wow, so it's on the list.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: It's on the list.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: I have a pair of brand new Alpha Fly Threes.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Okay, so also on the list.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: You gotta I have all the shoes, man.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: I wanted to buy the new Adidas, but I couldn't find my sizing.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Another cool thing about Japan is that they have different colors than we do, like all those cool colors we see come out first.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: We don't get in America for some reason.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: That isn't it's wild, man, and it's way cheaper.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: It's like your Pro 4 over there, I think was like when I do the exchange rate 180, 190.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: We're paying 250.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: We are paying 250 for race shoes.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: You don't pay tax as someone who travels over there on top of that, so it's like a double discount.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's crazy.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: Um, what else did I get?
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: I got the Asex Meta Meta Speed, not the new ones that are coming out, but the Paris or one of those Sky Paris, yeah.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Wow, so you I heard I hear good things.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Those I was able to try pre-injury because I was getting ready for for the Brooklyn half here, and uh man, they feel really good.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: Is it are you gonna use those?
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: Which ones are you gonna use for your race?
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: So, my my goal and thought was I'm gonna use uh the A6 for all anything half down.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: I don't think I'm strong enough to be using them on a full because they are very narrow in the back.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: I don't heel strike for any reason, but like you know, you gotta have strong mechanics or be really fast to like use to stay on your front.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Like 26.2.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, I hear you.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: So it's I'll see when training comes, but like I do have uh some has and 10k's coming up, whereas where I want to use the I I feel like the A6 after the two runs I've had doing some threshold work, they're like a for me at least, I like them more than I like the vapor because you get a little bit more firmness.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: The A6 that you're just yeah, it's definitely a shoe I like for half and down.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: So you said that it's more firm than the alpha fly?
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's not firm like super firm, but definitely more firm than the alpha fly.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Uh sorry, not the alpha fly, the vapor fly.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, the vapor fly.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Three.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Three.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: I hear the four is also slightly more firm.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: I haven't tried the four yet, but like it's a good snappy race state shoe.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: I think you'd like it too, because you like vaporfly.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: I do.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: I think you'd like the asex for sure.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: But let me tell you, I used the vaporfly three from my last two marathons, which were this year.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: The Florida Marathon in February and the Disney in January.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: And, you know, there's some regret of using the Vaporfly a little bit.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: Oh snap.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: A little bit.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, they weren't PR races.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: They weren't the best races for me.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: I don't know if it was my fitness, but I feel like the shoe was a factor.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: The shoe was the shoes were a factor.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: I feel like they didn't give me enough protection in the forefoot.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: I think I think if I had like other shoes, maybe the Alpha Fly, or in my head during the race, I thought because I wear tests for Socony, and yeah, they sent me the elite boost, the endorphin elite twos to test like several times last year, like several iterations of the shoe.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: And so in my head, I was like, man, those shoes are so much better, but you were not supposed to wear them for races, right?
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: Because they're not out yet.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, not out, no photos, yeah.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I was like, that's a bummer.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: Because in my head during the race, I'm like, the elites would be so much better.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: Because mile from 15 on, when I was dying, when everything hurt, I thought I I thought the other shoes would have given me that extra, extra softness and cushiness that I needed at the time.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: Because everything was hurting.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: At Disney, I remember at Disney especially how everything hurt.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: I think it was an 18, 18 through 26.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: I'm like, gosh, I can't even like I want to walk, but I don't even know if I can do that.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: So if I walk, I might just stop.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: So I should I better just keep going.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, you're a trooper for using vaporfly, man, because like a lot of people I usually often hear this with people who use alpha fly, or like people say, like, hey, like it's great for like the fast work, you know, your 5k, 10k, half, but like for the longer distance, man, like, yeah, to your point, like I've heard that too before.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: Granted, I did my first race in them, I didn't know any better, but my first full, I should say, but um the alpha has that extra, you know, the pods in the front and stuff.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: And I think you'd like the ASICs, that's why I'm saying it.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: If you look at the ASICs, either the edge or the sky.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: I went with the sky though, but I would have gone with the sky too in my head.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm not a cadence fronter, you know.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: The the edge is supposed to be caded or something like that.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: I just like the way the plate is, but what I'm getting at it has more foam in the front.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: So what you're saying is I think you'd like the the meta.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: One, it's a little bit firmer, which will help with the like not feeling tired, and also like it has more cushion on the front.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: In the ASIC.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: So I it sounds like pretty much everything you're describing.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: So that's like I feel like I made them.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: But the thing is, my my PRs are in the Vaporfly twos for they're great shoes.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: For the full, for the full.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: But I did a half and I have them here because I used them yesterday in the nice the Elite 2s.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: I did my half and I PR'd by like 30 seconds.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: And this was just last month, I think maybe like three weeks ago, the Lake Miniola half here.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: It's like about an hour away.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: And you know, I went into that race with zero expectations, and I haven't even been training at you know, high speeds, like zero speed work.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: I've just been doing doing like one long run a week on a treadmill.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: I've been doing a lot of treadmill because I feel like in Florida it's so hot, yeah, it's hard to do fast stuff outside, especially in in summer, you know, as it gets closer to summer.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: But having a treadmill is a game changer.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: And since I'm usually I'm going to the gym every day anyways, it just it's the convenience factor with the time.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: I can get a lot done without having to drive somewhere another 30 minutes, you know.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: So that that the convenience factor is a big one for me in terms of running.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: But having that shoe, man, that shoe, that elite too, that's a that's a huge recommend for me.
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna use that right now.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: That's my that's the shoe of choice at this moment for Chicago.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: It's funny when uh when I was in Japan, they had just come out, and like I think halfway into my trip is when they came out and I saw my health and was like, man, this feels soft.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: Like in a good way.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Uh damn, so what was the PR you hit for the half?
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: For the half, it was 130 40 something.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: I I haven't hit sub-90.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: I haven't hit sub 90 yet.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: But almost there though.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: I mean it's it's close, but you know, let me tell you, man, I'm getting older and I'm I'll be 45 this year.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: And I feel like No way.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I just want to say congrats, man.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: I thought you were younger, you know, from a whole.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: You really thought that?
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: You know, I I figure like higher 30s, maybe early 40s, and and you know, because you live and you you you um, you know, we'll get into that here in a bit, but like you live, you're very active and stuff, you know, you got some fast time.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: So congrats, but you're you're what I want to be, I'll put it that way.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: Thanks, man.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: I appreciate that.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: But you know what's all about the training and what you put into it, what you decide to do.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to find it.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: I can't find it.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: I don't know, it's like 130 and change.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, I feel like you can get there.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, especially if you said you did this without even like focusing and training for it.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Obviously, the training, the discipline, which you have is there.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: So that's another thing about me.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: I don't really do a lot of structured training.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, I running all the time.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: I'm running every day, almost every day, at least six days a week.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: 50 miles a week is always my goal.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 21:31SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: But when I when I'm starting to prepare for a race, or I mean, obviously it's gonna be different for a marathon, because then okay, you really have to do stuff for that.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: You have to do the long run, you gotta do so you gotta do some speed work.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: Nobody wants to do speed work, but you got no matter how you do it, it has to happen, or else you know, especially if you have a goal in mind.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: It's one thing if you just wanna conquer the distance, which is hard enough as it is.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: But I feel like if you have a goal in mind, you have to do the things.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Whatever the things might be in order to achieve it.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: And to me, that is doing at least a couple 20 milers and one speed workout a week.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's I think to me is the bare minimum.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: Cause I've never had a coach or or anything like that, right?
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: So just from what I've seen with other people doing is what I've been basing most of my training on.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: And it's just because I just like running.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: So I'm always running anyways.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: So if someone were to call me tomorrow and say, hey, let's let's go do a half, there's a half.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, I can do a half.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: 26 might be different, but I'll do a half.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: You know, it's a long run.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: We can we can do that.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, from seeing your runs, I I think you said it, you hit it right on the head, man.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: It's it's funny.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: I said this earlier, but I just realized I never really posted it on Shrava.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: So like in the last year I got certified to be a coach, just out of passion.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Like, I was just like, it's not that expensive.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: And like I would study this anyway.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: And and I'm one of those I always say there's two types of runners, right?
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: And and we talk running all the time.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Like, there's the Kipchogis of the world who they're into all the data, you know.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: Like, granted, they run a lot easier in Kenya, and like they're they don't complicate similar to your running style, they're running, but like, you know, he has like the the glucose monitor and you know, Nike with great shoes.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: There's everything they're watching everything, every move.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Exactly, right?
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: And uh granted, and he's into all the recovery and fitness and strength training, and then you have uh the Kelvin Kiptoms of the world, right?
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: Who broke the world record, or or like some of these Kenyan or very fast elite people who are like, I just run a lot of miles and go super fast on the race, and they just go like all in that's crazy on the race and and super fast.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: There's always two there's the analytical runner and the runner that's just like let's just run and and I'll jump into a race, and next thing you know, they're just flying by you.
- 23:43SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 23:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, it might just be their day.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and it's just something to be said about being consistent and running daily.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, for those listening, and I guess we can segue into that here real quick, but for those listening, funny enough, those of us that see Mark Onstra, we joke he has every morning this guy runs a seven mile, same loop.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: It's consistent.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's almost like a heart in the middle of the run.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's for the neighborhood, and it's you know, you're doing the what you need to be that foundation, right?
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Building the base, you're doing that part, which is really what matters most because you can do the speed work later and stuff, but like once you got the miles and the base, you got the hard part out the way, which is getting out the door and doing it consistently.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: You the rest will come easy, man.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: I think that's a good way to put it, yeah.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, like if you look at any running plan, they're like, hey, you need to build mileage for pacing, and then somewhere in the middle, okay, let's work on some speed work, and then towards the end, right?
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: It's called prioritization.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: Towards the end, then they start focusing on the actual race.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: Like, okay, this is the goal we want to hit.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: Let's start throwing some mileage uh for the race.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: But like you have the bulk of the base, which is what people struggle with.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: People are like, hey, I want to do a marathon, and they run, you know, nothing knocking anything about it.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: You just gotta respect the distance.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: People do it 20 miles a week.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: You'll learn the hard way.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: You can do 20 miles a week, and that's fine.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: You're getting fitness, but like you're a runner.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: 26, you gotta put some base in.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 26 in one time.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: Jesus Christ.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: Even when I think about it, it's daunting.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: I think you'll be fine, man.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: You have some great, great times already, and obviously you run consistently already.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm always down to help, just let me know, shoot me a message and stuff.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: But like, what I want to ask you is like, how did you get that way to backtrack a little bit?
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, you got work, right?
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: You get in the runs every morning.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: Tell me about like your daily routine and how you got that consistent.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: So I started running in um Sorry, I eat twizzers.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: Twizzers is like carbs.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: That's the one thing, my number one snack.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: I mean I eat I this is uh what do you call it?
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: Subscribe and save.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: That's what I subscribe and save anyway.
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: Back in 2020, it was actually the end of 2019, I did blood work and stuff.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: Okay, and then the nurse was like your cholesterol's high.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: I was like, Okay, damn it, damn it.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: What can I do?
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: I guess I should try and fix my diet and be better at that.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: And then COVID happened and so they shut my gym down.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: And I hadn't I was like, Well, I told the nurse I was gonna be better.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, maybe I can start running because I was already doing a few miles on the treadmill, like one mile to I think I I got to three on the treadmill at the gym after lifting.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: Because I was always lifting for the last how many years, like forever since college.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: I was always lifting and maybe more um consistently since 2010.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's always been there, you know.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: Um the fitness stuff, uh at least working out, going to the gym.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: Uh I used to play basketball with friends, you know, when we were younger.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: When I say younger, I'm like 20s, but Okay.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: Still young, man.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: You you're rocking out.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: But it once, you know, once we all got into our 30s, not so much.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: And then really no one had the time.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: Everyone started having kids.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: I don't have kids.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: So I kept going to the gym.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: So 2019, the nurse told me I need to get my cholesterol right, so I stopped eating meat for a little while, not for a long period.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: So I stopped eating meat.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: The gym closed, and so I had nothing to do.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: So I was like, let me just take it outside.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: Instead of that, of that time, that block of time, that hour or two before work, I took it in outside instead of going to the gym.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: And it started with, let me see if I can do two miles.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: I know I can do three, but it's hot out here, it's hot outside.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: So I I started I just went outside and I went for one, and then the next day I did it again.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: The next day I did it again.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: And then I was like, you know what?
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: I can probably do more.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: So I I would do four or three, and then it'd be a walk.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: There'd be a walk because I couldn't do it.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: But then I kept going.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: I'm like, well, that's fine.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: Maybe tomorrow I can do four without having to walk in there, or maybe I can do five, even if I have to walk.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: Fuck it.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: At least I'm going, at least I'm doing it.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: And so I just kept doing it.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: And I just kept doing it and doing it.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: And uh, I think it was like six months.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: I didn't eat any meat.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: Was it any meat?
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: So no meat, and then the running built up in that small amount of time that six months became every day.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: It almost became an obsession because I started, you know, we were all inside because of COVID, and I was watching all these YouTube things and learning about all these shoes.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, man, these shoes are cool, man.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: That's gonna help me run better without having to walk.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: It's gonna make it easier.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: If this shoe's gonna make it easier, sign me up because it's getting hard now.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: It's hot.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: And so I just kept doing it, man.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: And eventually the gym opened back up.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: And granted, I had lost a bunch of weight uh because I I just kept running and I wasn't lifting anything, and I wasn't eating any meat, and I had stopped taking the protein shakes, but I was feeling light, light, and I I felt good, like I my energy levels were up.
- 28:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: You know, except for during the day in general, because I'm tired from all the running.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: But I I just felt a uh a it's different, it's like a different energy, a different vibe where I'm tired, but I don't feel defeated.
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: And so when they opened the gym back up, I started going again.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: And I had to actually I mean it wasn't it didn't take long, but I was able to lift the same amount of weights, but I really, really didn't want to give up the running because I'm like, the running took me here.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: And so I I I was like, I still have how am I gonna do this?
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: Because now there's two things I want to do.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: Now what am I gonna do with that time?
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: Because the the work schedule didn't change.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: I still have to be at work at seven.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: So I was like, screw it, I'll just wake up earlier.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: So I started waking up at four and and so now and to this day the schedule hasn't really changed much.
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: It's uh you know, get up around four, be out the door around four fifty to get to the gym.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: Uh the gym is like from five to about five thirty-five.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: Get back home, change the shoes and get out the door so I can be out the door to run by ten to six, and I have an hour to run, get home, shower, log into work.
- 30:13SPEAKER_02: I work from home, so I'm lucky in that department.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: Uh but the schedule doesn't change, you know?
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: And I think for me, to do anything really it is consistency.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: And that's the key to success.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: I guess if I were to give anyone advice, because I have people ask me, I'm like, well, how do you do it?
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: I hate it.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: I'm like, well, I don't know.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: I didn't love it right away.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: I just had to keep doing it, and now it's just part of my day.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's always that like beginning a run, because your story is similar to mine.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: It just well, we started around the same time, and it's just I'll try walk run, and then walk run turns bigger and bigger, and then you get consistent.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: But like something to be said about like the consistency.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: What I'm getting at is it's never fun the beginning, and then people start liking it.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: They think that you just woke up and you were good at it.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: Like, no, no, man, it sucked.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: I didn't like it.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that first month or two where like, I mean, eventually you're just walking, running, and then you're running more, and then it's like, okay, now I feel slow, and then you get faster, and then then it becomes addicting.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: You're like, oh, the shoes kill me, oh I'm getting faster, oh races.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I got a watch.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: I'm like, man, the watch kit keeps track of this stuff.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: Because I used to just use my phone, you know.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Same Nike app.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the Nike app, the Nike Run Club app.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: I still have it, man.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: I'm on Volt now.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: I never thought I'd get to Volt.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: That and uh Coach Bennett and my headphones.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: I don't use headphones no more, but it was like, oh, try this run, try this work out, and uh that's kind of where it all started, man.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Did you ever circle back with the nurse?
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: Like uh when did you you know, for the cars are all like, yeah, you I did.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Okay, so it was I it was it was so that was the end of 2019, so it was like the end of 2020, and I went back and she was like, Okay, so you look great.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: I'm like, thanks.
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: I lost some weight, and then um the blood work came back, and then that's when she was like, Oh, so you did you change everything?
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: I'm like, Yes, I did all the things.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: But I th and I told her, I'm I think it's the running.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: I I I started running and I never I never stopped running.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: And they they say that now every year when I get my blood work, and they're like, Oh, what are you doing?
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I think it's the running.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: But because ever since then, I've never had that red, you know, you know what I'm talking about when they have like the red when they when you do blood work, I don't know if you Oh yes, yes, I know you're talking about it.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: You know it's not good, right?
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: And it's like, oh something's in red, so now I don't have anything in red.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: So I I try to keep it that way, and I'm almost like anal about it now because I never wanted to see the red again.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's kinda I mean, I don't similar to you, I don't get them anymore, luckily.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: And I to me it's also the running because like the heart is getting more efficient.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: But yeah, when you see the you know, I get blood work now a little bit more frequently just to make sure I'm good on things, and it's like, yeah, you never want to see that red on anything you don't on nothing.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: Because then you start to worry.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: I'm like, how am I gonna fix this now?
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: I think I saw it once on sodium, and like obviously I Googled it, which is bad advice for anyone.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: Listen, don't don't Google the stuff.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: I Google every single time.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what is it?
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Don't self-diagnose, but eventually I went to the doctor like a week or two after, like, hey, I just want to schedule an appointment to go over this blood work.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: And it was like, no, this is totally fine, whatever, especially for you.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: Like it, and uh I started pulling back, like, okay, maybe my gel has too much sodium, or maybe I'm throwing too much salt on this food.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: And it was like 0.2 over.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Nothing crazy.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: It's like not even a real threat.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: And we need it as runners, you know, because like um you know, sodium intake is not I feel like in America we we have a lot of high sodium, but like when you're running it one, it offsets and you kind of need a little bit of it.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, for hydration and stuff.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: It's my excuse for eating ramen so much.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: Oh man, I love ramen, man, and I already missed uh the ramen from Japan.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: Man, it's it's like eight ten bucks, and it's like a level that I don't care if it was a hundred dollars here, it would never equate to the same I'm gonna have to get over there at some point.
- 33:59SPEAKER_02: Jeez.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: So I've traveled a little bit, I wouldn't say like a lot, but Japan went to my favorite country list, which is insane.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: Um, I already want to go back.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: Um, and you know, at some point I want to do a major there, the Tokyo Marathon, which I was supposed to do two years ago.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: Is that hard to get into that?
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: Is that it so at the time when I got in, apparently it was the hardest.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: You got into that one.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: I got in right before I moved to Colorado, and then uh I moved to Colorado, and unfortunately, between altitude and moving, I couldn't train for it, so I didn't go and then realized after it was the hardest race to get into.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: And I say used to be because I feel like now a lot of these majors are are getting insane.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: And all I don't know if you saw recently, yeah, it's like impossible to get in.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: There which is fine.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm more of a neural runner, and uh, I was just talking to one of my friends recently.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Like, there's so many good marathons in America, so and even globally, to do, you know, at some point I want to do all six, but Tokyo's hard, but like it's any excuse to go to Tokyo or Japan at all at this point is is all welcome after that trip.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: Wow, I believe you.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: I believe you.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: I would like to have the marathon excuse myself.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and ramen is just oh man, you should go 100%.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Noted, yes.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: So what's your diet like nowadays, you know?
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: Granny eating ramen and twizzlers, but hey, carbs, you know?
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: Well, I eat okay.
- 35:20SPEAKER_02: I eat my diet's not the worst, but it's not the best either.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: And it also kind of depends on is is a race coming up?
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: If I if I'm doing a race, I will be a little bit stricter.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: I will try not to eat heavy like meat.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: Or if I do eat meat like let's say I'm training for a marathon, like Chicago's coming up.
- 35:40SPEAKER_02: Um so leading up to that, while I'm training and doing the long runs, I will probably not eat a lot of meat or red meat, and I'll try to keep it chicken and fish and nothing fried.
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: Rice is a staple in my diet, and bread.
- 35:55SPEAKER_02: I like bagels.
- 35:56SPEAKER_02: And the problem with me is I do have a sweet tooth, that hence the Twizzlers.
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: I'm constantly eating sweets, and that's not the greatest, but I don't know, there's just some things I can't let go of.
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: You know, one thing that I do I have noticed over the last probably the couple couple years is I drink less alcohol now, and I think that has been a bit of a game changer, a little bit in terms of recovery and rest.
- 36:23SPEAKER_02: Because my sleep is just not good if I have a couple glasses of wine or some beer.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: Well, it's it's hard with alcohol and alcohol.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: Um, funny enough, for some reason, when we start running and we get somewhat serious, almost everyone I know stops alcohol.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: I've personally stopped and it kind of started with running.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: It wasn't like intentional, it was just like I want to perform and not help me perform.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: It doesn't help you perform, trust me.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: But the sleep goes to crap, yeah, inflammation goes high, you know, like you don't feel good the next day.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: We're getting older.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: It's not like when you're 20 and like, oh, okay, next day, let's go.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: It's tough.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: It's tough.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: But I, you know, the thing is, I I miss hanging out with my friends and doing that.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: And I'll still hang out, you know, and I will drink, I'm still gonna do it, but I will feel it.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: I'll notice the okay, Garmin's.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: How the hell does Garmin know?
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: But it knows Garmin's telling me you're drinking, you're not recovering, you're all in red, everything's orange now.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: So that is one thing I noticed that I have reduced in the last couple of years, and it has helped, I think, in training, in my training.
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: Because I would still drink all the time before, like maybe a glass of wine a day.
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: Like this went on forever, and I would still run and work out and do do all the things, it'd be fine.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: But it's but there's a little bit of a difference when you stop it, and I can I can tell.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: Agree.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: It's crazy, man.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: It's running, I mean, it's a healthy thing in general, but it's it's crazy what um what starts to change as you get more consistent.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: And it's uh you've been consistent for quite a while, and even six months in from when you started.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: Like, there's there's there's a lot of trade-offs that just naturally I've seen happen with a lot of runners, you know.
- 38:01SPEAKER_00: Alcohol, um you're still social, but like you know, you got a lot of time running.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: So like maybe your Saturday mornings are like, hey, long run.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: I ain't doing that, you know.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: Like the missus, wife, you know, partner, whatever, you're just like, oh, we can do that after 12.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's everyone, everyone knows.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: Like, oh, this guy's going to travel.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: This guy's going home.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm going home.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: I'm tired.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: I'm asleep.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: I sleep at like eight.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: Damn, that's wild.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: Well, you gotta wake up at four.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: Well, what time do you go to bed typically?
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: Well, typically, like, for me, it's 9 10.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Um, okay.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: I'm on a little bit of a break from work right now, so it doesn't matter too much, but I still try to get early because we're not in summer yet, and big difference from Florida to Colorado right now.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: Like, our weather's now starting to get hot.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: And it's nowhere, it's beautiful right now, it's perfect.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: But like it's on and off, man.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: Like, spring in Colorado is bipolar.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: It's like spring is like you're either gonna get a lot of wind and it's gonna be cold, or the next day is gonna be 70, which is all great weather compared to Florida.
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, I lived in Florida, Miami, and like kudos to you, man.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I would also wake up early over there in your shoes, and and I did, I started my running in Florida.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: I can't do the humidity, but here it's like if you wake up at five, it could be 40, but then at like 12 o'clock, it's 60, 70 right now, and you don't know if you're gonna get wind.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: So it's not summer, summer yet.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: So technically I have some leeway with whatever time I get up now.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: But once summer kicks in, yeah, even like it's sunny here, like the difference between here and um Florida.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: You guys are closer to the sun.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: Closer to the sun, it's super dry, there's no humidity, right?
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: So it's it's different, right?
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: It's different, it's different.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: Like, don't get me wrong, I'll I'll take Colorado over Florida all day.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Um, because humidity, you just walk out, you're dripping and sweat.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: But it's hot here when it's hot, it's like, man, like, yeah, you better like an oven.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: Like an oven.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: I'm not the best with like sun protection and and uh you know protection, whatnot, but like here you kind of need it because you feel it, man.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: I've never been a shirtless runner.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, probably from my bigger days.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Out here, you just like screw this, it's it's burning.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: There's no shade.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: There's no shade in most places.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: So that's I guess not.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: You guys even have grass.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we don't have I mean, uh, well, you've been here a couple times, like the grass is here, but then it's so sunny, and like between the seasons, it just goes away.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Like, it's it's rough out here.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: Like, you got patches and stuff, but there's great dirt and gravel, which a lot of people like running, it's easier on the knees and stuff.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: But it seems like you guys have a huge community over there too, of like runners, I think.
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, I I personally want to get more into it, especially with the podcast and stuff, and I will.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: Um, what I've no, there's a lot of I already follow a lot of clubs, I just haven't I should probably get to that because when I was in Seattle, I was in a lot of run clubs, and it looks like Florida starting to have a lot.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I haven't yeah, I didn't do any of this stuff, but I see them.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you see them, right?
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: And I and somehow maybe you can relate to this.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: Like when I started, I kind of started running similar to you.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: I was just going out the door, waking up early and right before work, like 5-6 a.m.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: And you you somehow become a solo runner.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you get used to it.
- 41:04SPEAKER_00: I lifted for years before running myself.
- 41:07SPEAKER_00: 10, 20, 11.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: Sounds like around the same time as you is when roughly when I started lifting or roughly about, and you know, you get used to lifting solo and running solo, and then you start doing your long run solo, and and it becomes comfortable, I guess, and you get used to it, which is helpful for races if you're not running in a pack.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: I don't even know how to be a social runner if I'm being honest.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm like, okay, this is gonna be.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: I would recommend it.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: Like, I did it more in Seattle, and and I will get to it here.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: The thing I find here is that yes, so you have we have Boulder, right?
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: For me, boulder's like 35 minutes away, and and that's one of the mechas of America and running, and a lot of the elites live there.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: It seems like it, it feels like it, just you know, oh yeah, from what I get.
- 41:43SPEAKER_00: You see them all the time, and and uh I don't know if you ever use the supplement scratch.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're based out of here, they have a cafe too, which is cool.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: But no kidding.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, cycling is big as well, so there's a lot.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: I just haven't delved into it.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: One between getting used to the altitude and and now an injury, but like people are also fast here, is the is what I'm getting at.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: So, like you want to do a group, but when the group goes out, easy run, eight-minute pace, and you're like, that's that's kind of my worst old year, you know?
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: This is hard.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: You know, and I wanted to.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: I remember last year when I was getting ready for Chicago, and my coach was from Boulder, and and uh at the time I had a coach, and he trains a lot of the the like fast and elite people here.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: We had these run clubs, and I would kind of intentionally stay away, not for any bad reason, it's just like hey, I had to run a certain pace or easy pace, and I knew if I went to this club, that was going out the window.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because everyone's running fast.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: So everyone's running fast, and you could do that, but then you're not following your plan or what you should be doing for running.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: I'll get into it this year because there's some uh and actually I'll use that to ask you, like, but like there's some training philosophies after now being certified and going down that rabbit hole of now I'm addicted to like just how we get addicted to running shoes and who's on YouTube and the influencers and runners.
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: Now I'm into the coaching part of it a lot, just just out of natural curiosity.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: And uh, I've been studying a lot of America coaches, and and I I nerd out on books.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: So, like the America coaches, the Kenyan coaches, Ugandan coaches, Norway coaches.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: They all have different styles, I'm assuming.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and you know, with traveling, you know, we just spoke about Japan, like they run in loops a lot, which is crazy.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I've noticed now that I've kind of a coaching mindset from reading and being into it, I see all the runs of people, and their speed workouts are different than this country or this sector.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: Like Europe runs a different way, in my opinion now.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: So, like oh my gosh, so you really you know, I really dig dig into this.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I'm I'm all in it now, man.
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: Like some people, you know, they coach and this is that, but like I'm all into it now.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm staring at like 10 bucks right now of running.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: What?
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: As I say this.
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: Do you have people clients?
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: I have a few.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: I haven't fully gone into it.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: Like, um, you know, and that's one thing I want to ask you as far as like inspiration.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: So, like, I'm gonna use this guy as as one of inspirations, but running to me can be This, like, when I think of me personally running and coaching, like I like to do stuff, maybe it's a millennial older thing.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: Like, I've wanted to prove myself a little bit more before I get too far into coaching.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: I feel like everyone online is a coach now or certified in something, and it's like I relate to the people who've put in the work, which is why I love your stuff.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: I see you run daily.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: Like David Goggins, is I'm a huge fan, is the person I was alluding to.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: Is like he's running hella miles, and then like, okay, I'm more inclined to listen, whether that be a good or bad thing.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: So I coach some people, like friends of mine who have asked and they know from they know me.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: Like I had a group in Florida.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: I was in Florida last year at Naples in December, it'd be exact uh a month or two after Chicago.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: And I was coaching um some friends of mine and people I used to work with in Florida.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: So I had about five people I coached.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: Uh, some of them was for first half, uh, sorry, full marathon.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: It was the uh the West Palm Beach.
- 44:49SPEAKER_00: Sorry, I said Naples, but West Palm Beach.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: Uh full marathon.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: The trees of that one.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: Is it the garden of life?
- 44:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that's the brand, right?
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah.
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: It's the brand, right?
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: The supplement, the healthy supplement brand.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: I almost did that.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: It's a good funny enough, that was almost my first marathon in Florida.
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: I got injured a couple weeks when I was newer, right before doing it.
- 45:10SPEAKER_00: Um, and it just didn't pan out, and then I moved to Seattle for a bit.
- 45:13SPEAKER_00: But uh, but yeah, I coach a few people now.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: I have one friend of mine I coach pretty consistently right now just because he's wanted me to.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: He knows I do my homework.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: And usually around the fall season, I have about four or five people and doing the podcast more now because I like this a little bit more.
- 45:26SPEAKER_00: But eventually I plan to go down that rabbit hole, and especially now this year, I've spent a lot of time studying the different philosophies and methodologies of running, even the older stuff, the Arthur Lilliards, the runners from the 80s versus now.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm deep in it now.
- 45:39SPEAKER_02: It sounds like it is, but then a lot of it's gonna be just your own personality and the stuff that makes you you, I guess.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: That will be the what separates you from others, I think.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, we'll see it.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: I for me, it's all passion, right?
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: Like, if it leads to somewhere, like for me, like it's it's all a passion project and stuff, and and definitely want to do more coaching, and I will towards later in this year.
- 46:00SPEAKER_02: But there's a lot of commonality like because people are gonna be at different levels and have different goals.
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: It seems like a lot, it just seems like a lot.
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: When I think of coaching someone, I'm like, oh my god.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: You gotta be really into it, but also I would say the the course slash company I did it is very good.
- 46:16SPEAKER_00: Funny enough, they're also based out of Colorado, but it's uh UESCA.
- 46:21SPEAKER_00: Um, they're like one of the sanctioning bodies for coaching here.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: There's them, and then there's USTAF, the track and field.
- 46:26SPEAKER_00: Those are like the two main bodies I knew.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: So I looked up like the good place, and they they talk about that.
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: And as you read more and get into it, even after you're certified, there's there's nuances on how to treat.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: What helped me a lot out uh is once you see all these training philosophies.
- 46:43SPEAKER_00: The one thing I will say, and to not go down a rabbit hole on coaching, that could be another time, but uh, we run too much too fast, and everyone does this.
- 46:50SPEAKER_00: We run too fast, we make too many mistakes on running too hard all the time, is the common thread everywhere.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: Really American.
- 46:55SPEAKER_02: So that's one thing you've noticed.
- 46:57SPEAKER_00: Everyone runs that's one thing I've noticed.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't see you do this often, which is crazy to me because you run in heat and humidity all the time, but it's like people run their easy pace, and it's a cliche thing because everyone's in a zone too, but it's really not about that.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: It's really like people run their easy pace too fast, which leaves no room to train hard when you need the hard like easy days should be easy, hard days should be hard.
- 47:20SPEAKER_00: And then when you look at like the countries who are doing well, here's the thing about Tokyo and Japan, right?
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: As a whole, we don't hear about them often, but they were the greatest runners around the 80s.
- 47:29SPEAKER_00: If you go to that country and you do a half, which I probably won't do for a long time, the first hundred runners will be under 70 minutes.
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: What it's like that?
- 47:38SPEAKER_02: It's like that.
- 47:40SPEAKER_02: Man, that talk about feeling like you didn't show up.
- 47:46SPEAKER_00: Like that'd be a first place, and yeah, there's a guy I followed on YouTube who's amazing at documenting this.
- 47:51SPEAKER_00: He moved there, uh ran to Japan, which is a cool guy.
- 47:53SPEAKER_00: But like I've read a couple books on this, and like everyone's really fast out there, and it's they don't train uh a lot of VL2 Mac stuff.
- 48:00SPEAKER_01: So what are they doing?
- 48:01SPEAKER_00: If you look at running, they're doing a lot of threshold and and repeats in that like kind of moderate zone.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: If you look at Kenya, the Kipchogis and all these other worlds, right?
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: Like, one of the things I've noticed is like, yeah, they run hard and they run a lot of mileage, but they're doing fartlecks and like longer repeats, where like where you look at like us or UK, it's always like here's a speed work followed by another speed work, 10k half half, 5k in the same workout.
- 48:27SPEAKER_00: And it's like your newbie runner, for those listening, like your heart rate's still gonna be 170 anyway.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's gonna be too hard.
- 48:36SPEAKER_00: You're not really working those different different uh zones for you.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: It's it's all the same to your body and mind, but yeah, hard.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: Like, man, that was hard no matter what you did.
- 48:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so it's it's kind of hard.
- 48:48SPEAKER_00: Like, we're doing too much, honestly, where like people like you.
- 48:50SPEAKER_00: This is why I was giving you kudos.
- 48:52SPEAKER_00: It's much better to do what you're doing and then do that consistency, running that base, right?
- 48:57SPEAKER_00: Like, if you're doing 50 miles per week consistently for months on end, it's so much easier for me to go, like, hey Mark, let's throw some speed because it's not gonna tax you as much.
- 49:07SPEAKER_00: You're doing 50 miles per week consistently, you know.
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: Plus, you have heat and humidity and you're getting it done, so it's like less taxing on your body where like you could go hard on some of these workouts versus someone who's like not yet consistent or doing too much mileage.
- 49:19SPEAKER_00: It's all yeah, there's nuances depending on where someone's at.
- 49:22SPEAKER_00: And you mentioned basketball earlier, like you played basketball that may or may not play into it.
- 49:26SPEAKER_00: Some people play sports.
- 49:27SPEAKER_00: That said, I'll ask you and pivot this back to you.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: Like, I know you mentioned earlier, like you kind of just do your runs, but like what do you follow guidelines why?
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: Is there any guidelines?
- 49:35SPEAKER_00: Are you have you ever had a coach?
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: Are you self-coached?
- 49:38SPEAKER_00: Um you know, do you just go out and get let me get the mileage?
- 49:41SPEAKER_00: I know some days you run harder than others.
- 49:43SPEAKER_02: It's usually just to get the mileage, if I'm being honest.
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: I just really want to get to that 50 miles a week, and unless there's a race.
- 49:50SPEAKER_02: And if I'm if there's a race coming up, I'll change it up.
- 49:52SPEAKER_02: I'll tack on a long run, I'll tack on the speed.
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: But really, it really is just to get the miles, and I'm not in a hurry to get like as long as I'm out the door by that 550, no matter what pace I decide to do, whether it's like eight minute miles or ten minute miles, usually on average I'd say it would be around nine, or it depends on the shoe.
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: If I'm testing a shoe, um, you know, sometimes it's just a fast shoe, it just kind of makes you go faster, right?
- 50:22SPEAKER_02: And um as long as I get the miles in, that's all really that I'm concerned about.
- 50:29SPEAKER_02: Um, because my goal is always gonna get to that 50.
- 50:32SPEAKER_00: Do you say you run would you say sorry, you run by feel more?
- 50:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, or you know what?
- 50:37SPEAKER_02: If sometimes I just want to get it over with.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: I just want to get this done, and I'm just gonna run.
- 50:42SPEAKER_02: I don't even know there's no expectation, and that's most days.
- 50:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:48SPEAKER_02: Or I'll tell you what, I listen to a lot of audiobooks, just regular books, right?
- 50:52SPEAKER_02: And I already know that's gonna be like 9 30 and up pace for me.
- 50:58SPEAKER_02: Because I'm I'm listening to the story and I just need to get the miles in.
- 51:01SPEAKER_02: So that's that's what's gonna happen.
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: Or I have like a running playlist, right?
- 51:06SPEAKER_02: So if I'm listening to that, it's faster, and usually that means I just want to get this done, and I'm probably tired, and I needed the faster music to at least keep me going.
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: Pump you up, we gotcha.
- 51:17SPEAKER_02: Because in my head, I didn't want to run that day.
- 51:20SPEAKER_00: Man, that's very intuitive and a great tip.
- 51:22SPEAKER_00: Like, let me throw on an audiobook.
- 51:24SPEAKER_00: So I kinda I don't know if you did that intentionally, but like to slow down a little bit.
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: Because I've tried running with audiobooks.
- 51:29SPEAKER_00: I'm running too fast for the book.
- 51:31SPEAKER_02: You're running too fast for the book, and it it doesn't it doesn't go well, right?
- 51:34SPEAKER_02: Together.
- 51:34SPEAKER_02: So you just you just slow down and you you have to use like the shoe that's not that fast.
- 51:41SPEAKER_02: And when you when you re for me, if I really don't want to run, I'll put on a super shoe and and knock out that seven miles just so I can get those miles in.
- 51:52SPEAKER_02: Uh and that, and you know, it's I know it's just me, it's just a personal goal.
- 51:55SPEAKER_02: People say, Why don't you rest?
- 51:57SPEAKER_01: I'm like, Well, I don't know.
- 52:00SPEAKER_00: I'm I don't feel like resting.
- 52:02SPEAKER_00: I'm good.
- 52:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's something to be said when you do it daily, right?
- 52:05SPEAKER_00: It becomes routine, it's part of you.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: Like we all had those.
- 52:07SPEAKER_00: Like, I didn't run today, I feel groggy.
- 52:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: You know, and you have a routine and you got used to it.
- 52:13SPEAKER_00: So it kind of would in some runners, like when they don't run consistently, it it actually backfires on them where like that one or two days off kind of sets up like messes them up because the recovery is part of their running the next day again, you know.
- 52:25SPEAKER_02: And for me, the okay, so if there's a race, I'll rest before the race a little bit.
- 52:30SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 52:30SPEAKER_02: Like if there's a half, I'll I won't run the day the day before or a full.
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: I might not run for two days before.
- 52:36SPEAKER_02: And of course, there's like a a taper, you know, for a marathon.
- 52:40SPEAKER_02: But I'm running so much for a half.
- 52:42SPEAKER_02: There's no taper for me for a half.
- 52:45SPEAKER_02: I don't need taper for that.
- 52:46SPEAKER_02: You know, that's just me.
- 52:47SPEAKER_02: As long as I'm getting all my miles, I feel like I can show up on whatever race.
- 52:51SPEAKER_02: Because I I don't know.
- 52:52SPEAKER_02: At this point, I guess I'm just running because I just like running.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: And uh, I don't know if I'm gonna be super competitive unless it's a race that okay, I'm planning to do this, I'm gonna go balls to the wall on this guy, uh, on this one.
- 53:08SPEAKER_00: Do you feel like when you get into a race, something like a mind shift happens?
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: Like, okay, time to go fast.
- 53:15SPEAKER_02: You know, that last half that I did with the PR, it was so unexpected, mostly because I was not doing any type of training that involved that pace for me, that I don't know what happened.
- 53:28SPEAKER_02: I think for one, everything just kind of lined up.
- 53:32SPEAKER_02: The shoe, I think the shoes helped.
- 53:34SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I got to the race so early.
- 53:36SPEAKER_02: I think it was like an hour, an hour and a half early because I had to get the bib.
- 53:41SPEAKER_02: And you know, it's kind of like stressful when you don't have the bib, so you get there early and you're like, let me get there early so I can make sure that I get the bib and I'm not stressed out if I have to go to the bathroom, da-da-da-da-da-da.
- 53:52SPEAKER_02: I had enough time to stretch and I stretched, and I think that made a huge I don't stretch every day.
- 53:57SPEAKER_02: I gotta be honest.
- 53:58SPEAKER_02: I don't, I'm not that guy that's doing yoga, you know, that I should probably be doing and probably make me a better runner.
- 54:04SPEAKER_02: I don't do this stuff, right?
- 54:06SPEAKER_02: But before this race, I had so much time, I was stretching everything.
- 54:09SPEAKER_02: I was stretching my toes, my ankles, things I typically wouldn't stretch.
- 54:14SPEAKER_02: And I was just sitting there and I I continued to stretch.
- 54:17SPEAKER_02: I it was at least for 45 minutes.
- 54:19SPEAKER_02: And when the gun went off for the race, after I think it was after two miles, I'm like, oh my god, I still feel good.
- 54:27SPEAKER_02: I'm still going fast.
- 54:28SPEAKER_02: And you know you're going fast because I was like, Yeah, I got this.
- 54:31SPEAKER_02: I'm still in this.
- 54:32SPEAKER_02: Because in my head, it's usually because I've done several halves.
- 54:35SPEAKER_02: You know, a year I'll do several halves, and usually I'm like, I'm tired.
- 54:39SPEAKER_02: That was a bad move.
- 54:40SPEAKER_02: But this time I didn't feel that, I just kept going.
- 54:43SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 54:45SPEAKER_00: Is is half your uh favorite distance?
- 54:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 100%.
- 54:49SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 54:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:50SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 54:51SPEAKER_02: Like 5k, no, because I'm not like super fast.
- 54:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, if I was like a super, I think maybe if I was younger and could probably improve my times, I don't think I'm there at this point.
- 55:02SPEAKER_02: I don't think I can go 90k.
- 55:04SPEAKER_02: 5k's hard, man.
- 55:05SPEAKER_02: It's 5k is too hard.
- 55:06SPEAKER_02: It's it's too hard.
- 55:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you gotta go.
- 55:08SPEAKER_00: It's sure people think, but like you're going fast, it's hard, man.
- 55:12SPEAKER_00: Heart rate's way higher than you know, like yeah, it's it's a different animal.
- 55:16SPEAKER_02: And I I and I think I enjoy a slow burn.
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:21SPEAKER_02: But when you think of the marathon, it's it's intimidating.
- 55:24SPEAKER_02: But this year I did two back-to-back uh January and February.
- 55:28SPEAKER_02: In my head, I was using that fitness from the first one, and I was like, you know what?
- 55:33SPEAKER_02: I think I'm just gonna sign up for the second one, and let's just see what happens.
- 55:36SPEAKER_02: Because I have I did all that training, I was running all these long runs.
- 55:40SPEAKER_02: I think I can just do it.
- 55:41SPEAKER_02: And I did it, and it was okay, but um, it was like the best marathon.
- 55:47SPEAKER_02: It had these huge, it was the Florida marathon, it's over in Melbourne, Florida.
- 55:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, I know Melbourne.
- 55:52SPEAKER_02: And has these huge bridges, and I was like, this is oh boy, this was a huge mistake, but I still did it.
- 55:58SPEAKER_02: And you know, I had a friend Laura who was who was also running, and she actually helped me finish because during those uphill, like at the I think it was the last couple miles, I was walking up.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: I was walking up the bridge, the bridge.
- 56:10SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I can't run.
- 56:11SPEAKER_02: And then when she would catch up, she's like, Come on, Mark, you gotta go, we gotta go.
- 56:14SPEAKER_02: And then and then I would continue with her.
- 56:16SPEAKER_02: But if she wasn't there, I would have gave I would have walked it.
- 56:18SPEAKER_02: I would I definitely would have walked it.
- 56:21SPEAKER_02: So having having a friend in a race does help.
- 56:23SPEAKER_02: I don't know if people know that.
- 56:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's something I want to at some point dabble in.
- 56:28SPEAKER_00: We'll see for my next race, like maybe run with a pack and see what that's like, because you hear about it a lot.
- 56:33SPEAKER_00: But like when you run in groups, like there's something about like being pulled.
- 56:36SPEAKER_00: So like I want to try that at some point.
- 56:38SPEAKER_00: I wanted to ask you, like, how'd you get into Sokany, like you know, testing for them?
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: Uh I've always meant to ask you that even outside the podcast, like, what's that like?
- 56:46SPEAKER_00: Are they your favorite shoes?
- 56:47SPEAKER_00: They are now.
- 56:48SPEAKER_00: They are now, right?
- 56:49SPEAKER_02: Well, this this endorphin elite too.
- 56:51SPEAKER_02: When they started sending me, when they first sent me that endorphin elite too, that sounds like geez, this is a different, this is a different thing here.
- 56:58SPEAKER_02: They have something different here.
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: And that when I tested that shoe, is when I was like, okay, this shoe actually makes me excited to go out every day.
- 57:09SPEAKER_02: And every day, if I'm tired, no matter what happens, I'm it's gonna make me feel okay once I start going out with this shoe.
- 57:17SPEAKER_02: But to backtrack, it started, you know.
- 57:20SPEAKER_02: I I just got lucky.
- 57:22SPEAKER_02: You know, I I just started I saw YouTube videos of people saying you should apply to be a wear tester.
- 57:28SPEAKER_02: I'm like, really?
- 57:29SPEAKER_02: That's a thing.
- 57:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:31SPEAKER_02: So then I just started uh to go into all the websites, you know, Nike, Adidas, and Socony.
- 57:38SPEAKER_02: And then Socene, I think I got lucky.
- 57:41SPEAKER_02: I think they just randomly picked me and I happen to be the sample size, I'm a size nine.
- 57:46SPEAKER_02: And so I think that's also a factor.
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: And so now I think I'm just on a worker's list there.
- 57:53SPEAKER_02: Someone who works, there's a list, I'm on her list, and so they send me shoes, and luckily, it's usually I guess this person, she gets the race day shoes or like the higher end shoes.
- 58:06SPEAKER_02: So it's always the pro series and now the elite.
- 58:09SPEAKER_02: And I think I'm getting the endorphin pro 5 here shortly.
- 58:14SPEAKER_02: Again, I tested that's a good shoe, too.
- 58:17SPEAKER_02: So being in tune with the shoe community, I really think uh keeps me interested in running because I want to know.
- 58:25SPEAKER_02: I want to know the difference, right?
- 58:26SPEAKER_02: You get it?
- 58:27SPEAKER_00: Because there is a difference, like boy, like, yeah, for sure.
- 58:30SPEAKER_00: Like, do we overdo it?
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: Probably, but it makes it fun, right?
- 58:33SPEAKER_00: Like, there's worse things out there.
- 58:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 58:37SPEAKER_02: And you know, last year's race day shoe is this year's, you know, workout shoe.
- 58:42SPEAKER_02: Workout shoe.
- 58:43SPEAKER_00: It's funny.
- 58:43SPEAKER_00: I ran into Pro Fours in Chicago.
- 58:46SPEAKER_00: Did you like it?
- 58:46SPEAKER_00: I didn't want to go all out.
- 58:48SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 58:48SPEAKER_00: I had my beef with it, but I think it's a great shoe for most people.
- 58:52SPEAKER_00: It's heavy.
- 58:52SPEAKER_00: I felt like it was a little heavy.
- 58:55SPEAKER_00: I was okay with the heavy because I was training in it.
- 58:57SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 58:58SPEAKER_00: Like consistently, and that's one thing I like about it.
- 59:00SPEAKER_00: You can train and still race in it.
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: Like some of these shoes you like, you have to preserve.
- 59:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 59:04SPEAKER_00: Because if you get a little too much mileage, that's it.
- 59:06SPEAKER_00: It's not the same.
- 59:07SPEAKER_00: I felt like those you can just run, train 200 miles, and still have fun.
- 59:11SPEAKER_00: And it's weird I felt what I'm about to say because it's probably worse than other shoes.
- 59:14SPEAKER_00: So I think it's more of a training thing, and that's something I'm gonna work on now as I recover and train.
- 59:18SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, now similar to you, I'm I'm gonna go into a more like I've always been consistent, but more like a daily grinder running, and I want to push the envelope with some of these new training thing philosophies.
- 59:29SPEAKER_00: But what I'm getting at, I felt the shoe is pretty stiff for a shoe that's not supposed to be as stiff, because you know, because they have the elite now, which is like supposed to be the upper echelon of Sokany.
- 59:38SPEAKER_00: I felt those were uh stiff enough, but it could have been a me thing and and what we discussed pre-recording this as far as like quads and stuff, but like I feel it's overall great shoe.
- 59:46SPEAKER_00: It's just I felt like they were a little bit stiff after a while in a long run distance, but uh, I think it was a great shoe.
- 59:53SPEAKER_00: It's just I don't know.
- 59:55SPEAKER_00: I was going to try the Pro 3, and funny, I remember when you got the Pro 3.
- 59:58SPEAKER_02: I love the Pro 3.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_02: I think the Pro 3 was good.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_02: My uh it might be my favorite shoe of all time at this point right now.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_02: Super Blast for me.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_02: I have the most miles in all of my shoes in my super blast one.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_02: I'm using super blast two now.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_02: It's a daily.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_02: I'm using that and the uh what is it?
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_02: The Nova Blast 4, 4, not the 5.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_02: So Nova Blast 4 and the Super Blast 2 are what I'm currently dailying in.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, ASICs is killing the game, man.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_00: Um they are right.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_00: They they've been uh I mean, I don't know if you saw the new speed shoes coming out.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_00: They have three now.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_00: Um I gotta try that race edge, right?
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_00: Meta speed.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_02: The ray scares me.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_02: What is that?
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_02: Four ounce?
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_02: Is that is there something there?
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like 4.5 ounces, and your sample size, so 4.5 ounces.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: Um, I think for me it'd still be like 4.9 or something because I'm I'm a size 10, so like two over 9.5 and then and 10.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_00: Um, it's still gonna be sub-five.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_00: The shoe scares me because I feel like super light, it's super bouncy.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_00: You know, like I'll work on this, but like I feel like your mechanics gotta be really on point or be really fast to like get the most out of shoes.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_00: So I'm a little fearful of the raid, but I may try it.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_00: They look insane, and even the new Sky Edge Paris, they're coming in, I think.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_00: 5.6.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_00: They're on the website.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_00: It's wild, man, what these shoes are doing nowadays.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_02: Like, if I go to the what the the Colfax uh expo, yeah, I'm like gonna look for shoes.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_02: If they have shoes, I'm gonna pick them up.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm in my head.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_02: I'm like, if they have that MetaSpeed race.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_00: I will say the expo was dope.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_00: Um the Colfax Expo is one of the dopest expos I've been to.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_02: Okay, if you can make it out there next Friday, I think my sister and I are planning to go.

- 1:01:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'll be uh funny enough, it's not even far from me the expo or anything.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_00: Um actually the race starts a block up from me.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_00: No kidding.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_00: Or you like I'm at the park where it starts.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_00: By city park where it starts.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_02: I don't remember where she said it starts, but yeah.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_02: I looked at the map.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_02: I'm doing the relay.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_02: The fifth leg.
