- 0:00Speaker 1: In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Genesis 1.1 Dear God, as I meditate on today's Bible story,
- 0:09Speaker 1: inspired by Genesis 1.2-4, my soul will be revived and
- 0:15Speaker 1: excited at the fact that the grand artist has created
- 0:19Speaker 1: me in his image. Through chaos and nothingness, Lord, you
- 0:25Speaker 1: brought forth light and beauty. Therefore, my mind will be
- 0:29Speaker 1: at rest. knowing that even in the midst of a
- 0:32Speaker 1: chaotic day, you will create moments of beauty for me
- 0:36Speaker 1: to bask in. As I meditate on the book of Genesis,
- 0:41Speaker 1: I will be reminded that this name means the beginning.
- 0:46Speaker 1: And through this truth, I can stand in expectation, knowing
- 0:51Speaker 1: that my best and most creative days are just about
- 0:55Speaker 1: to begin. I declare that you are the God of
- 1:00Speaker 1: Ex Nilo, the God who creates something out of nothing.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And I declare that whatever you make, you've stamped it
- 1:09Speaker 1: as good. And because I am your creation, your stamp
- 1:14Speaker 1: of approval is all over my life. I am art
- 1:19Speaker 1: in motion. I'm a creative being. And the master artist
- 1:25Speaker 1: has sculpted me. In Jesus' name, amen. Thanks for making
- 1:32Speaker 1: prayer a priority in your life. To hear the Bible
- 1:35Speaker 1: come to life, stay tuned for The Bible in a Year,

- 1:48Speaker 2: The Creation In this Bible story, we discover the beginning
- 1:54Speaker 2: of the universe— God's poetry spoken over the void and
- 1:59Speaker 2: chaos turning into order. God speaks the world into existence
- 2:05Speaker 2: and with his voice all life and meaning came. All
- 2:10Speaker 2: is good. Inspired by the book of Genesis.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:19Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. Today we're going all the
- 2:22Speaker 3: way back to where it started. We're taking a look
- 2:25Speaker 3: at Genesis 1. In the beginning. So begins the greatest
- 2:29Speaker 3: story ever told. We start out our journey on the
- 2:32Speaker 3: Bible here at the beginning. It's total darkness, a great void.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Then something happens. God speaks. This is the story of creation.
- 2:43Speaker 3: God making something out of nothing. And not just something. Everything.
- 2:48Speaker 3: It's what theologians call creation ex nihilo, or creation out
- 2:53Speaker 3: of nothing. Here God's word of power is fully on display,
- 2:57Speaker 3: His voice commanding our whole universe to spring forth. As
- 3:02Speaker 3: you listen, picture the awesomeness of each event. When God speaks,
- 3:08Speaker 3: light and darkness are separated. Stars, planets, entire galaxies burst
- 3:14Speaker 3: onto the scene. Imagine the mountains springing up from the waters,
- 3:18Speaker 3: the animals and trees and fish covering the earth and
- 3:20Speaker 3: the rivers and the oceans. It's a spectacle of creativity.
- 3:25Speaker 3: And it all happened through the power of God's Word.
- 3:29Speaker 3: But God didn't create willy-nilly like a mad scientist. He
- 3:33Speaker 3: created with brilliant design, intent, and love. As you listen today,
- 3:38Speaker 3: take notice of a powerful truth God repeats over and
- 3:42Speaker 3: over with each act of creation. The passage reads, And
- 3:46Speaker 3: God said that it was good. God doesn't make junk.
- 3:51Speaker 3: He makes everything perfect. Not a single thing out of
- 3:55Speaker 3: place or not according to his plan. God not only
- 3:58Speaker 3: speaks things into existence, he speaks order into the chaos.
- 4:03Speaker 3: This story reminds us that God isn't a God of
- 4:05Speaker 3: confusion or disorder. And through it all, God was thinking
- 4:10Speaker 3: of you, people like you and me, and our ultimate
- 4:14Speaker 3: place in his created order. He created us in his
- 4:18Speaker 3: own image with a unique purpose unlike anything else in creation. Humans,
- 4:23Speaker 3: as you will see, stand apart from the rest of creation.
- 4:27Speaker 3: And it's not until God has placed his imprint through
- 4:29Speaker 3: mankind on this world that he will say, it is
- 4:33Speaker 3: very good. This is where it all begins. So let's
- 4:38Speaker 3: get started.
- 4:40Speaker 2: In the very beginning, out of nothingness, God formed and
- 4:45Speaker 2: created the expanse of space and the details of earth.
- 4:50Speaker 2: The earth was empty. Chaotic and without life, God's spirit
- 4:55Speaker 2: hovered over the empty and chaotic void. Then, at an instant,
- 5:00Speaker 2: God spoke. Let there be light. He called out, and
- 5:07Speaker 2: there was light, just as he commanded. For from God's
- 5:11Speaker 2: lips springs forth reality. The earth was now filled with light,
- 5:18Speaker 2: and with it, the potential for life. the light was good,
- 5:23Speaker 2: and God separated the light from the darkness. So God
- 5:27Speaker 2: named the light Day, and the darkness Night. There was
- 5:32Speaker 2: evening and morning the first day, and this was good.
- 5:37Speaker 2: The waters, roaring and in disorder, were spoken to next.
- 5:43Speaker 2: With the power of His words, God spoke order to
- 5:46Speaker 2: the elements. The waters were separated from the atmosphere, and
- 5:51Speaker 2: the skies were apart from the earth. There was evening
- 5:56Speaker 2: and morning, the second day, and this was also good.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Then God said, Let the waters gather, and the dry
- 6:06Speaker 2: land appear before them. And just as he said, there
- 6:10Speaker 2: it was. The waters traveled, gathered, and scattered. The land rumbled, shifted,
- 6:18Speaker 2: and emerged from among them. a beautiful dance to the
- 6:22Speaker 2: words of their Creator. He called the gathered waters seas
- 6:28Speaker 2: and the dry land earth. God looked at all of creation,
- 6:33Speaker 2: though beautifully incomplete, and saw that it was good. As
- 6:38Speaker 2: an artist adds color to a blank canvas, God adorned
- 6:42Speaker 2: the earth with beauty. He made trees, flowers, fruit, vegetation,
- 6:48Speaker 2: and grass— This was the third day, and God saw
- 6:53Speaker 2: that this was also good. God was also at work
- 6:57Speaker 2: in the rest of the universe, creating stars, suns, galaxies,
- 7:03Speaker 2: and all the other mysteries of space. Let them be
- 7:07Speaker 2: seen in the night and used to measure signs, seasons, days,
- 7:13Speaker 2: and years. Already God was thinking of humanity. THERE WAS
- 7:19Speaker 2: EVENING AND MORNING, THE FOURTH DAY, AND GOD SAW THAT
- 7:24Speaker 2: THIS WAS GOOD. AFTER THE REVEALING OF LIGHT ITSELF AND
- 7:29Speaker 2: THE ADORNING OF PLANT LIFE AND ALL OF ITS BEAUTY,
- 7:33Speaker 2: GOD CREATED LIVING CREATURES. FIRST WAS THE DWELLERS OF THE
- 7:38Speaker 2: SEA AND THE EXPLORERS OF THE AIR. ALL LIVING CREATURES
- 7:42Speaker 2: IN THE SEA AND BIRDS OF THE AIR WERE CREATED
- 7:45Speaker 2: TO ROAM THE DEPTHS AND HEIGHTS OF THE PLANET. All
- 7:49Speaker 2: these things God spoke with the word of power. This
- 7:53Speaker 2: was the fifth day, and God saw that this was good.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Then God spoke again, Let the earth bring forth living
- 8:03Speaker 2: creatures of all kinds. Once again, out of nothingness and chaos,
- 8:09Speaker 2: life sprung forth. Beasts of all kinds began crawling, roaming,
- 8:15Speaker 2: and grazing the earth. Then God said, Let us make
- 8:20Speaker 2: man in our own image, in our likeness, and they
- 8:25Speaker 2: will care over the world. So God, with His own
- 8:29Speaker 2: breath of life and word of power, created mankind. He
- 8:34Speaker 2: then charged them with caring over the earth and all
- 8:38Speaker 2: that is living in it. His desire was to give
- 8:41Speaker 2: them purpose and enjoy the world He had created in
- 8:44Speaker 2: relationship with Him. For mankind was the only created thing
- 8:50Speaker 2: stamped with the image of its creator. And on that
- 8:54Speaker 2: sixth day, the once void earth was filled with life. This,
- 9:00Speaker 2: God knew, was very good. God had taken the chaotic
- 9:05Speaker 2: void and inserted purpose. The heavens and the earth were filled,
- 9:10Speaker 2: and his piece of art was complete. So on the
- 9:14Speaker 2: seventh day, God paused. to enjoy what he had done.
- 9:19Speaker 2: So he blessed the seventh day and made it holy.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Genesis is the beginning of our story. But before anything existed,
- 9:33Speaker 3: God was there. God didn't appear at the time of creation.
- 9:37Speaker 3: We see that when there was nothing else, God was there. Father, Son,
- 9:42Speaker 3: and Holy Spirit were present at the dawn of time.
- 9:45Speaker 3: He is our eternal, past, present, and future, God. And
- 9:50Speaker 3: He chose to create this world, including you and me,
- 9:53Speaker 3: for His glory. Now that's amazing. No matter how many
- 9:57Speaker 3: times I read it, the creation account never gets old.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Old.
- 10:01Speaker 3: I never cease to be struck with the awe and
- 10:03Speaker 3: wonder at just how great our God really is. We
- 10:07Speaker 3: cannot even fathom this kind of power. Mere words birthing
- 10:10Speaker 3: our planet and the infinite mysteries of space. I just
- 10:15Speaker 3: love how this story speaks to the order that God
- 10:18Speaker 3: brings to things. Where there was chaos and confusion, he
- 10:21Speaker 3: brought things into order, into a perfect functioning according to
- 10:25Speaker 3: his purposes. That same power is alive today. God silences
- 10:31Speaker 3: the chaos and takes away the darkness. He creates order.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Listen to Genesis 1, 3, and 4 again. And God said,
- 10:41Speaker 3: let there be light, and there was light. God saw
- 10:45Speaker 3: that the light was good, and he separated the light
- 10:47Speaker 3: from the darkness. I absolutely love those words. God separated
- 10:52Speaker 3: the light from the darkness. It was like a foreshadowing
- 10:55Speaker 3: of what he would do one day through Jesus, the
- 10:57Speaker 3: very light of the world and the one scripture describes
- 11:01Speaker 3: as the word made flesh. You may even want to
- 11:05Speaker 3: write down those verses and hold them in your heart
- 11:07Speaker 3: to remind you of what God has done and can do,
- 11:11Speaker 3: will do in your life. God speaks light into your
- 11:15Speaker 3: life through the power of his word, his son, Jesus.
- 11:19Speaker 3: And through Him, He also restores the purpose for which
- 11:23Speaker 3: you were made, created, the purpose that all mankind was
- 11:26Speaker 3: created for, which we hear in today's reading. We are
- 11:30Speaker 3: to be caretakers of this world He created and to
- 11:33Speaker 3: enjoy all that He has made. Don't miss that. You
- 11:37Speaker 3: and I are made to reflect God's image, to care
- 11:40Speaker 3: for the world that He has made, to enjoy His presence,
- 11:43Speaker 3: and to enjoy what He has created. How well are
- 11:47Speaker 3: you living out that purpose? But the creation story isn't
- 11:50Speaker 3: just about what once was. It reminds us of where
- 11:53Speaker 3: we who follow Christ are headed, a return to a
- 11:56Speaker 3: world where everything is good and we are free to
- 11:59Speaker 3: live out our purpose and to enjoy God and his
- 12:02Speaker 3: creation now and forever. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for
- 12:07Speaker 3: giving us this wonderful story of your creation and how
- 12:11Speaker 3: it shows us your incredible power and care for every
- 12:14Speaker 3: detail of this world that you have made. Thank you
- 12:18Speaker 3: for creating us in your image and for filling us
- 12:21Speaker 3: with your purpose. Help us to live with that purpose
- 12:25Speaker 3: front and center in our minds and to reflect your
- 12:27Speaker 3: glory to those around us today. In Christ's name, amen.
