Latest / BREAK/FIX the Motorsports & Vehicle Enthusiast Variety Show / Pit Stop: Petrol Heads of a Certain Age (with Bobby Parks)
Transcript
- 0:00We always have a blast chatting with our guests about all sorts of
- 0:03different topics, but sometimes we go off the rails and dig deeper into
- 0:07their automotive and motorsports pasts.
- 0:09As a bonus, let's go behind the scenes with this pit stop mini sode
- 0:13for some extra content that didn't quite fit in the main episode.
- 0:17Sit back and enjoy.
- 0:17Enjoy and remember to like subscribe and support break fix on Patreon.
- 0:24Well, you already answered some of them.
- 0:26Uh, the, like the, if you could buy any car on the market today to drag
- 0:30race and stock trim, what would it be?
- 0:32Tesla Roadster.
- 0:33Yeah, sure.
- 0:34We, we hit that.
- 0:35We, we nailed that one.
- 0:36I just want the fastest production vehicle ever made that would have to be in my
- 0:42garage if I had an unlimited budget.
- 0:44And then I got probably 50 other cars that if I had more garage space, I
- 0:48would want to have, but we've all had the privilege of enjoying and
- 0:52watching the fast and the furious.
- 0:54So my big question is how many times do you actually
- 0:57shift gears in a quarter mile?
- 1:0213 over a period of 29 seconds or so.
- 1:06Yeah, right.
- 1:09Is there danger to your manifold, right?
- 1:15So what was on your wall as a kid then, other than a poster of a large
- 1:18chested woman in front of a Fiero?
- 1:21I had the Lamborghini Countach.
- 1:26I'm just going to put a picture of a Countach up on Instagram with the
- 1:29hashtag that says men of a certain age.
- 1:31And then that's it.
- 1:32You just get it.
- 1:33If you didn't have that poster, you weren't into cars.
- 1:37If you didn't have that poster.
- 1:38Matchbox car, then I don't know what you're doing.
- 1:40What else was there?
- 1:41And I can't remember if it was the Ferrari F one 50 is that was the
- 1:45other one that that was super popular.
- 1:46It might not have even been the F40.
- 1:48So yes, yes, that's what it was.
- 1:51And then it was funny because when I was in my early twenties, I saw a
- 1:55guy in our area, driving one around fully restored, like brand new.
- 1:59And I remember thinking, man, that's like the matchbox car I used to have.
- 2:03And that's the poster I had on my wall.
- 2:0570 year old man driving it around.
- 2:07It was badass.
- 2:08It was really a Fiero with a body kit, but we'll go on from that.
- 2:11So it's okay.
- 2:12That's my Ferrari.
- 2:13That's what I have.
- 2:14Since you're an LS guy, we bring this up a lot and I don't know
- 2:17why we're so fixated on it.
- 2:19Maybe because it just doesn't make sense.
- 2:21I'm going to pose the question like this.
- 2:23It's very simple.
- 2:24C8 Corvette.
- 2:26What do you think?
- 2:27I like it.
- 2:29The aftermarket following hasn't caught up much harder, much more expensive to
- 2:34make the same amount of power right now.
- 2:37There's pretty much nothing that beats.
- 2:40The LS base motor in terms of dollar per horsepower, up to about
- 2:451, 500 wheel horsepower, once you get above 1, 500 wheel horsepower,
- 2:49then it's just a money game.
- 2:51You're going to spend money no matter what you have, but up to that point, and
- 2:56especially up to about a thousand wheels.
- 2:58There is just nothing that touches that platform for the money.
- 3:01We are taking these things literally out of the junkyard, out of cars,
- 3:06putting junk turbo kits together on our own and going out and making a
- 3:10thousand horsepower all day long.
- 3:12I mean, it's just that simple.
- 3:13And that's why the drag racing world, especially the no prep drag
- 3:19racing world has become so popular.
- 3:22Just 20 years ago, when that motor first came out and nobody knew
- 3:25anything about it, everybody at the drag strip was going so much slower.
- 3:30Tens was incredible.
- 3:32I remember that was my goal.
- 3:34Like I could just break the tens.
- 3:37I would be cool.
- 3:38For example, we talked about Fast and the Furious earlier.
- 3:41Dom was talking about that car running 10s.
- 3:44You owe me a 10 second car and 16 gears and all this shit.
- 3:52Trailer.
- 3:53Yeah.
- 3:53It's like 10 second car to everybody back then was like, that was fast.
- 3:59Now you can literally take a shit bucket, put it together for like 15,
- 4:04000 and you can run eights with it.
- 4:06It is a legit thing.
- 4:07And it happens all the time.
- 4:09There's never been a time in all of hot rotting where your average Joe was.
- 4:15able to build something that was even close to what the big dogs are
- 4:21capable of, which I don't know if you consider eights nowadays, big
- 4:24dog, but a thousand horsepower, it is just way above and beyond what your
- 4:30average commuter car or even your average sports car is capable of.
- 4:34There's no comparison yet.
- 4:35There are a couple of motors that are close.
- 4:38Coyotes are pretty good for the money.
- 4:40And honestly, if you were to slap certain four cylinders into a Fox body
- 4:44chassis, you'd probably give a couple of these VA to run for their money.
- 4:48There's other stuff out there.
- 4:50So everybody doesn't have to have an LS to go fast.
- 4:54It's just nothing beats it.
- 4:56Dollar per horsepower.
- 4:57That's it.
- 4:58And if you want to win, you do.
- 5:00Yeah.
- 5:00I mean, for you, the car is a tool.
- 5:03You want to go fast.
- 5:04You want to win.
- 5:05It doesn't matter.
- 5:06Could be doing it in a Pinto.
- 5:07Who the hell cares?
- 5:08Ricky Bobby.
- 5:09He's Ricky Bates.
- 5:09I wanna go fast!
- 5:11I wanna go fast!
- 5:14Yeah.
- 5:14First to last, buddy.
- 5:15That's all that matters.
- 5:16I don't care if you do it on a scooter or if you do it in a freaking hot
- 5:20rod, it doesn't matter as long as you get across that finish line first.
- 5:23So then you've already answered the question then the best motor
- 5:27that's not an LS based motor.
- 5:29Would that be the Coyote?
- 5:30I would say Coyote would probably rank up there.
- 5:34There's a couple other motors to Jay Z, the super motors, they do pretty well in
- 5:40stock form, but because a lot of the parts have to be outsourced and I'm sure there's
- 5:45a lot more companies in the U S now compared to 10 or 15 years ago, like when
- 5:49I used to work at altered atmosphere, we were building those things and we had to
- 5:52get camshafts imported from Japan or China or wherever that stuff got expensive fast.
- 5:58And then the top dogs, they're all using billet blocks and billet heads now, which.
- 6:03Again, crazy expensive stuff.
- 6:05So like when you see these supers running six seconds in the quarter, some of them
- 6:10are even running high five seconds in the quarter, which is just crazy out of
- 6:14a six cylinder, but you know, they're not doing it with some junk ass super
- 6:19motor that they got out of a junkyard.
- 6:20That's a fully built high dollar deal, even in the LS world to go that fast,
- 6:26it's going to be an all billet deal.
- 6:28And that stuff is way out of my price range.
- 6:31That's why again, no prep stuff is so popular.
- 6:34It appeals to the masses.
- 6:35Whereas this track racing stuff gets so expensive, so fast, if
- 6:39you're not rich, you can't do it.
- 6:40You know, they say about racing is it can make you a millionaire, but only
- 6:45if you started off as a billionaire.
- 6:48I mean, and to your point about motors, I mean, in German world, you
- 6:51don't see too many Porsches, drag racing and stuff, but the VR sixes
- 6:55are super popular for drag racing.
- 6:57For whatever reason, those motors are overbuilt from the word go and guys
- 7:01love boosting the hell out of them and building drag cars with those things.
- 7:04And even the early motors, which don't flow that well, they'll take a 12
- 7:09out and make a thousand horsepower.
- 7:10And it's like, yeah, whatever, who cares, you know, for a little VW motor, right.
- 7:13There was supposed to be in an econo box.
- 7:16Yeah, we built a couple of those when we were at Altered Atmosphere.
- 7:18They were pretty popular back then, too.
- 7:20They still are.
- 7:21I mean, I'm seeing stuff on Instagram and whatever where
- 7:23they're putting VR6s in anything.
- 7:25If it's got ignition, it's got a VR6 attached to it, you know?
- 7:30Yeah, yeah.
- 7:31There's more than one way to skin a cat for sure.
- 7:33And I just can't even imagine myself personally ever being brand loyal because
- 7:38there's just so much cool stuff out there.
- 7:40Even like what I was talking about between the gas and electric stuff.
- 7:43I hated electric stuff, but only because I thought they were just slow turds.
- 7:48And it was like, you know, you think of electric, you think of like
- 7:50a Prius or something, or a Volt.
- 7:52You don't think of a hot rod when you think of electric cars, but if
- 7:56you get in a Tesla that has ludicrous mode and you mash that pedal to
- 8:00the ground on a regular street.
- 8:02It'll change your mind.
- 8:04They're impressive cars, especially for drag racing.
- 8:07I don't know if they're real popular in the road race world I'd imagine
- 8:10probably not for drag racing.
- 8:12I definitely see the potential in them It's just nobody's really making the type
- 8:17of car yet That would do well in the drag racing world, that's electric at least.
- 8:22It's gonna happen.
- 8:23It's coming.
- 8:24So let me ask you as a, as a legit drag racer, what's your opinion of
- 8:29fun wheel drive, what we like to call it around here, front wheel
- 8:32drive, what are your thoughts?
- 8:33Front wheel drive?
- 8:35Ugh.
- 8:35I mean, can it be competitive drag racing?
- 8:39Yeah, like world cup finals is definitely a good showcase for front wheel drive
- 8:44stuff, but at the end of the day, the front wheel drive is always going
- 8:49to be a disadvantage, which is why now the civic guys, a buddy of mine.
- 8:53He owns a shop called hub city performance, and he's developed an all
- 8:58wheel drive unit for civics that he sells.
- 9:01Now that he's using like parts of a CRV, I believe is what he's using.
- 9:06And he's creating these all wheel drive kits that are just selling like hotcakes.
- 9:10He used to race at world cup.
- 9:11Front wheel drive and he did very well, you know, he had a
- 9:14mid eight second car and those things they back half like crazy.
- 9:19There's no other car on the planet that back halves like those things.
- 9:23Yeah, they run mid eights, which might not be considered, you know, the fastest
- 9:27thing out there at the track, but they're doing it at almost 200 miles an hour.
- 9:31Some of those cars are going over 200 miles an hour in the
- 9:35quarter with front wheel drive.
- 9:37You know, we all know they don't leave the line that hard.
- 9:39So they're playing catch up and it's cool to watch them.
- 9:42Cause I used to race with them.
- 9:43Like when I won my class at a world cup in 2012, my car, if I remember correctly, I
- 9:50was only trapping in like the one fifties.
- 9:52I might've went like a low one 60 at some point.
- 9:56I don't really remember.
- 9:58But the guys that I was racing that were front wheel drive, he trapped 194 in
- 10:05that same class to run the same time.
- 10:09So it's just different.
- 10:11And I'd imagine if there was even another 200 feet onto the back of the track, those
- 10:18things would be damn near unstoppable.
- 10:20I mean, they're just crazy fast up top in terms of drag racing applications, simply
- 10:25because the longest drag race that you'll ever hear of typically is quarter mile.
- 10:29So they're not going to do real well there.
- 10:32You know, my buddy that made this all wheel drive kit made those civics awesome.
- 10:36And he's been racing in the no prep world also doing very well.
- 10:39His car is awesome, man.
- 10:40You should see that thing.
- 10:41You could probably get Daniel interested in coming out and coming with us
- 10:44to go out to that if we wanted to.
- 10:46He'll bring a square body and a banjo.
- 10:48That's what's going to happen there.
- 10:50Well, what if it's fleet?
- 10:53And the best part is.
- 10:55He's a bowtie man through and through and you'll never convince
- 10:58him to LS swap a square body.
- 11:00I don't understand it.
- 11:01I just don't get it.
- 11:02Yeah, that doesn't make sense to me at all.
- 11:05Some guys just literally refuse to LS swap something because it's been overdone.
- 11:11And I get it.
- 11:12Well, here, here's the best part as just a side note, just
- 11:14because we got an extra minute.
- 11:15He hates BMWs flat out.
- 11:18Nuff said there, he has a three 25 is that he bought a 95.
- 11:23I think it is.
- 11:24And I was like, Oh yeah, LS swap.
- 11:26Just do it.
- 11:26He's like, no, I'm putting in a four, three.
- 11:29I'm like, what the fuck is wrong with you?
- 11:31Oh, that's based on what was based for three.
- 11:34I'm like, really?
- 11:36You know, the problem, he had it lying around.
- 11:38That's yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:40At a four, three line around.
- 11:41That's where a lot of terrible swaps come from.
- 11:44Well, I had it.
- 11:45Well, you know, I had a lot of things that, uh, you know,
- 11:48sucked and I didn't use them.
- 11:50The way he's looking at it is, and this is the justification, because I,
- 11:53I get on his ass about it all the time.
- 11:55He's like, well, it'll make more power than the stock BMW motor.
- 11:59Yeah, but you're spending 10 grand to do, I mean, 50 more horsepower.
- 12:04I shake my head.
- 12:05A lot of these cars, I don't understand.
- 12:07And especially the brand loyal guys, the Ford guys are the worst, even
- 12:11in the no preps, they're like, Oh, I bleed blue, blue oval till I die.
- 12:16And I look inside their car and I'm like, is that a two speed shifter?
- 12:19And they're like, yeah, do you happen to have a power glide
- 12:22transmission in this car?
- 12:23And they're like, yeah, why?
- 12:24Uh, Ford guy, you just said you bleed blue, blue oval till you die, but
- 12:31you're running a GM transmission.
- 12:33Oh, that doesn't count.
- 12:35It's like, yeah, that definitely counts.
- 12:37Yeah.
- 12:38You're using what works.
- 12:40Just admit it.
- 12:41You know, you're an LS hater.
- 12:43You probably got beat by one, which, you know, now you just
- 12:47absolutely refuse to use one.
- 12:49And you're going to die wanting to beat them with any other platform.
- 12:53Good luck.
