Latest / UNMASKED with Wesley Farnsworth / EP 59 - When Responsibility Becomes Your Identity
Transcript
- 0:00I think one of the quietest ways men lose themselves is through
- 0:03responsibility. Not rebellion, not selfishness,
- 0:07not walking away from people. The opposite.
- 0:09By caring deeply, by carrying a lot, by trying to hold
- 0:14everything together for everyone around them.
- 0:17And slowly, without realizing it, their identity starts
- 0:21attaching itself to the people that they love.
- 0:23Not just the role as a husband or a father, but to the
- 0:27struggles connected to those roles.
- 0:29So instead of saying I'm a man who loves his family, it quietly
- 0:33becomes I'm the husband of somebody struggling.
- 0:37I'm the father of a hurting child.
- 0:39I'm the guy trying to keep this whole thing from falling apart.
- 0:42And after a while, you stop knowing who you are on the
- 0:45outside of what you carry. I think a lot of men are living
- 0:49there right now. And tonight, I want to sit in
- 0:52that honesty for a while. Welcome to Unmasked, where we
- 1:00take off filters and get real about faith, failure, and
- 1:03finding freedom. I'm your host, Wesley
- 1:05Farnsworth, a dad, veteran, author, and a man who's learned
- 1:09that God does his best work in the middle of our mess.
- 1:12Each episode will have honest conversations with people who
- 1:15have walked through addiction, pain, or doubt, and with
- 1:17pastors, leaders, and everyday believers who are learning to
- 1:20live and lead authentically. So take a breath, pull up a
- 1:24chair, and let's get real. This is Unmasked.
- 1:31The identity rarely changes dramatically.
- 1:34Usually it's a quiet shift. It happens gradually over time.
- 1:40One responsibility at a time, one burden at a time, one
- 1:44difficult season at a time. And before you realize it, you
- 1:48stop introducing yourself by who you are.
- 1:51You start introducing yourself by what you manage, your job,
- 1:54your income, your stress level, your role, your family
- 1:58struggles, your failures, your past.
- 2:01And for a lot of men, identity slowly becomes tied to
- 2:04responsibility. Not relationship with God.
- 2:07Responsibility. See, that's important because
- 2:10responsibility can become addictive.
- 2:12People need you, people rely on you, people expect things from
- 2:16you, and somewhere along the way, your value starts getting
- 2:20tangled up in your ability to carry things.
- 2:23So what happens when love turns into identity?
- 2:25I think this especially happens in families because when
- 2:29somebody you love is struggling, it affects you deeply.
- 2:33If your child is hurting, you hurt.
- 2:35If your spouse is struggling, you carry that weight too.
- 2:39That is a part of love. But there's a difference between
- 2:41loving somebody through their struggle and allowing their
- 2:45struggle to become your identity.
- 2:47And a lot of men quietly cross that line without realizing that
- 2:51instead of my child is struggling right now, it becomes
- 2:55I'm the father of a child who self harms.
- 2:57Instead of my spouse is fighting an addiction, it becomes I'm the
- 3:01husband of an alcoholic. And over time, that struggle
- 3:04starts becoming the lens through which you see yourself, not just
- 3:08them. You let that sit for a second
- 3:11because there's compassion and carrying burdens with people,
- 3:15but there's also danger in losing yourself inside of those
- 3:18burdens. I think a lot of men do this
- 3:20because we're wired to protect. We are wired to fix, to carry,
- 3:25to stabilize things. And when someone we love is
- 3:28hurting, we naturally move towards the responsibility.
- 3:32What can I do? How do I help?
- 3:34How do I stop this from getting worse?
- 3:37And sometimes that instinct slowly becomes control, and
- 3:40control slowly starts to become identity.
- 3:43You start waking up every day emotionally centered around
- 3:46somebody else's struggles. Their emotions shape your
- 3:49emotions. Their stability determines your
- 3:52peace. Their progress determines your
- 3:54hope. And before long, you don't even
- 3:56know where they end and you begin.
- 3:59I think there's probably men listening right now who are
- 4:02feeling exhausted, not because they don't love their family,
- 4:05but because they've slowly started carrying things that God
- 4:08never asked them to carry alone. They feel responsible for
- 4:11everybody's emotional state, everybody's healing, everybody's
- 4:15choices, everybody's future. And the pressure of that becomes
- 4:19crushing, especially because most men don't talk about it.
- 4:23They internalize it. And externally they keep
- 4:26functioning. They go to work, they pay bills,
- 4:30they show up, they keep moving, but internally they're drowning
- 4:34under invisible weight. And that is the dangerous part
- 4:40of all of this. Eventually, you stop knowing who
- 4:43you are outside of crisis management.
- 4:46You become so focused on surviving the season that you
- 4:50lose connection with your own identity completely.
- 4:53And if that situation improves, you feel relief, but you also
- 4:58feel confusion because your identity became tied to the
- 5:01struggle, and so you don't know who you are without it anymore.
- 5:05And that happens more than people realize.
- 5:08Some people become emotionally attached to being needed because
- 5:11it's become the place that they find purpose, not peace,
- 5:15purpose. I also think a lot of men tie
- 5:17identity and to performance because performance feels
- 5:21measurable. Income is measurable.
- 5:23Success is measurable. Being needed feels measurable.
- 5:28Identity in Christ feels quieter, less tangible
- 5:31sometimes. And if we're not careful, we'll
- 5:34drift towards the identities that the world rewards.
- 5:37We'll drift towards things like provider, successful, strong,
- 5:42reliable, those things in them, in and of them.
- 5:45None of those things in and of themselves are bad, but they
- 5:49become dangerous when they replace sonship.
- 5:52Because if your identity is built on performance, what
- 5:55happens when you fail? What happens when things start
- 5:58falling apart? What happens when you lose the
- 6:01job? What happens when your family
- 6:03goes through something painful that you can't fix?
- 6:06A performance based identity collapses the moment the
- 6:09performance becomes impossible. One of the things I noticed in
- 6:15Scripture as a God consistently speaks identity different than
- 6:19we do. We define ourselves by what we
- 6:22do, what we've survived, what we produce, what we manage.
- 6:26But God speaks identity relationally.
- 6:30He uses titles like son, daughter, beloved, chosen.
- 6:34That is very different because relationship based identity
- 6:38stays steady even when circumstances change.
- 6:42Performance based identity doesn't.
- 6:44And I think a lot of men genuinely believe in God while
- 6:48still living emotionally as though their worth depends on
- 6:51how well they hold things together.
- 6:54Honestly, I think this is difficult for men because
- 6:57sonship feels vulnerable. It requires trust.
- 7:00It requires surrender. It requires admitting that your
- 7:04value comes from who you belong to, not just what you
- 7:08accomplish. And a lot of men has spent their
- 7:11whole lives earning approval through performance, so the idea
- 7:15that God calls you his son before you prove anything feels
- 7:19almost uncomfortable. We'd rather achieve our way into
- 7:22worthiness because achievement, it feels controllable.
- 7:25Grace doesn't. I want to stay here for a minute
- 7:28because I think it's important and it matters deeply if someone
- 7:32you love is struggling. You are allowed to grieve that.
- 7:36You are allowed to feel exhausted, to feel afraid, to
- 7:40feel overwhelmed. Loving through pain effects you.
- 7:43This episode is not about becoming emotionally detached.
- 7:47It's about remembering that your struggle is not your identity.
- 7:51You can love deeply without disappearing inside somebody
- 7:55else's battle. That distinction matters because
- 7:58some men are slowly dying emotionally, trying to save
- 8:02everyone around them while forgetting that they're human to
- 8:05see. There's a difference between
- 8:07carrying burdens with people and trying to carry people in
- 8:11entirely. One is love, the other
- 8:15eventually becomes control, even if it comes from good
- 8:18intentions. And control creates crushing
- 8:21pressure because you start believing everything depends on
- 8:24you. But some things only God can
- 8:27heal. Some things only God can
- 8:29restore. Some things are beyond your
- 8:32ability to fix, no matter how deeply you care.
- 8:35That realization can feel terrifying but also freeing.
- 8:39I think a lot of men have moments where they suddenly
- 8:42realize I don't know who I am anymore outside of
- 8:45responsibility. That realization usually comes
- 8:48quietly, maybe late at night, maybe during a burnout, maybe
- 8:52during a hard season. You realize that your entire
- 8:55emotional world revolves around survival, provision, stress, and
- 8:59problem solving. And somewhere underneath all of
- 9:02that, the man that God created you to be has gotten buried.
- 9:06Not gone, just buried. I think a part of healing is
- 9:11learning how to return to the identity that God gave you
- 9:15before your life got heavy. Not ignoring reality, not
- 9:19abandoning responsibility, but remembering you are not only
- 9:23what you carry, what you provide, what your family
- 9:26struggles with, what your past contains.
- 9:29You are first and foremost a son of God.
- 9:32And that changes the starting point.
- 9:35Because sons don't have to earn identity, they live from it.
- 9:39Practically, I think this means learning how to separate your
- 9:42worth from outcomes. Your struggle.
- 9:45Your child's struggle is not proof of you as a failed parent.
- 9:49Your spouse's battle is not your identity.
- 9:52Your different season is not your name.
- 9:54Your difficult season is not your name.
- 9:57You can love people fully with the law.
- 10:00You can love people fully without allowing their struggle
- 10:04to become the thing that defines your existence.
- 10:06That takes place in turn. That takes place Internet.
- 10:10Holy moly. That takes place intentionally
- 10:13and honestly. It usually takes community too.
- 10:17And honestly, it usually takes community too.
- 10:20Because isolated men don't always drift towards
- 10:24performance. Because isolated men almost
- 10:27always drift back towards performance based identity.
- 10:33I want to slow down here because I think some men listening to
- 10:36this are carrying shame for things that they were never
- 10:38meant to carry personally. They feel responsible for
- 10:41everyone and when things go wrong they internalize it.
- 10:45Not because they're weak, because they carry deeply, but
- 10:48carrying deeply and carrying false responsibility are not the
- 10:53same. Let that sit.
- 10:54They are not the same thing. You can care for somebody
- 10:57deeply, but you don't have to carry false responsibility.
- 11:01So here's your action step this week.
- 11:03I want you to pay attention to the way that you describe
- 11:06yourself internally, not publicly, internally.
- 11:10What labels come up first? Provider failure stressed.
- 11:14The one holding everything together, the husband of, the
- 11:18father of the son of. And then ask yourself this.
- 11:21If all of those roles and struggles were stripped away
- 11:25tomorrow, who would I be? Would I still know who I am in
- 11:29Christ? And then rush, don't rush that
- 11:31question. If all of those roles and
- 11:33struggles were stripped away tomorrow, who would I be?
- 11:36Would I still know who I am in Christ?
- 11:39Don't rush that question. Just sit with it for a moment.
- 11:42Because identity built on circumstances will always feel
- 11:46unstable. But identity roots in sonship
- 11:49can survive hard seasons. Thanks for joining me today on
