- 0:02Melinda Lee: Have you ever gotten feedback that you sound
- 0:05robotic after a presentation? Or that you don't sound yourself
- 0:09after a presentation? Today I'm going to share with you a story
- 0:14that I had just experienced two weeks ago from Waikiki. Hawaii,
- 0:20you'll if you're joining me on YouTube, you'll notice I have a
- 0:23beautiful wonderful tan. Too bad my pens don't stay and also my
- 0:27dermatologist really upset at me for ruining my skin. But that's
- 0:31another story. Today I can bring you back the experience from
- 0:35Waikiki that actually surprisingly mirrors the effect
- 0:40of being robotic. And how that also translates into public
- 0:45speaking. Splash. Suddenly underwater, I'm blowing bubbles
- 0:51on my nose and I'm, I'm looking up to try to find the surface
- 0:55and and then I get up and there's noise and waves
- 0:59crashing. And I'm trying to look for stability. I see my
- 1:03surfboard sWINTER. My surfboard and I finally get there and I
- 1:06could take a breath. Where's my surf coach? There's that orange
- 1:13hat. His name is he's known as a surf guru in Waikiki. He's
- 1:18phenomenal been teaching 25 years he wears orange hat, so
- 1:22all of his students can find him. So I swim to my surf guru,
- 1:26and I get back there. And the first thing he says to me is,
- 1:31stop overthinking. You're overthinking it. In my mind, and
- 1:37I'm all I'm doing is thinking about, you know, my positioning
- 1:42my feet on the board. Am I looking up versus looking down?
- 1:47And there's probably underneath the subconscious. I'm afraid I'm
- 1:50afraid of messing up. I'm afraid of falling. I'm afraid of
- 1:53hurting myself. I'm not a spring chicken. I don't want to get
- 1:56hurt. So I'm afraid I'm scared. And then so he says to me, stop
- 2:02overthinking it. Look at your daughter, your daughter has
- 2:06picked it up so quickly. My daughter is 15 years old. Right?
- 2:10He goes today, you are her sister. You're not the mom,
- 2:15you're the sister. And that clicked with me. Because then I
- 2:20remember back in 20s. And even my daughter's age 15 I didn't
- 2:23think about anything, I didn't worry about getting hurt, I
- 2:25didn't worry about falling. And, and then that's what I did. So I
- 2:31just let everything go. I let whatever go that he just taught
- 2:35me to do. I had to just drop it and just go with my courage. And
- 2:40get up on that board. And pretend I was 20 years old and
- 2:43not be afraid of falling up be afraid of getting hurt. And so I
- 2:46did that I got up on the board. And as soon as I committed to
- 2:49that I was able to finally feel the board stand up, feel the
- 2:54water, feel the water and it made me and then adjust and then
- 2:58and then I fell. But that's okay, because I stayed up a
- 3:01little bit longer. And then I got up again the next time with
- 3:04the same mentality of courage and no fear and, and then I
- 3:08stayed a bit a little bit longer after that. And then I was able
- 3:12to truly feel the water underneath the board and then
- 3:15pivot on the board. And then I finally coasted and surf all the
- 3:19way back to the beach. And by the end of the beach, I was
- 3:23ecstatic. I was happy I screamed. I was like the surf
- 3:28guru was so happy and my daughter was so proud. And it
- 3:33was an exciting time I had a lot of fun surfing and and again, I
- 3:36bring this up because it's it's like presentation skills. It's
- 3:40like delivering a speech. Speaking to a large audience.
- 3:45Many times we can overthink things. So if you ever if
- 3:50someone said to you're not yourself is because you are
- 3:53overthinking things. You're either overthinking things are
- 3:56in your head. And so what does that mean? When you're
- 4:00overthinking it, you're probably deeply afraid. You're afraid of
- 4:04being judged? You're afraid of you're gonna mess it up. You're
- 4:08afraid there's some fear there. And then it translates into what
- 4:13am I thinking? What am I saying? Am I Am I saying the right
- 4:17thing? are they judging me? So you're thinking versus being?
- 4:25And when you're thinking you become robotic? When you are
- 4:30rehearsing and saying the words that you've just practised the
- 4:33word, every word script by you know every word in your script,
- 4:38you start to sound robotic, because that's not how you talk.
- 4:41People don't talk from the script. When you're talking to
- 4:45your friends. Do you know every single word that you're going to
- 4:48say no. And it comes out beautifully. It comes out like a
- 4:52conversation. And so when you are rehearsing your script word
- 4:56for word, you're going to sound robotic because you're thinking
- 4:59about the Word that you're saying?
- 5:02Are you thinking about how am I sounding. And so all of these
- 5:05are up in our head. And we don't want that we don't want you to
- 5:08sound robotic. When you sound robotic people don't trust you,
- 5:11people are not connected to you, and then you don't, you're not
- 5:14influential. And then you're not building the team and getting
- 5:18people to get buy in into your initiatives. And so we want you
- 5:23to stop overthinking. And I'm going to share some tips with
- 5:28you. Today, I'm gonna share four tips to stop overthinking stop
- 5:33being in your head so it can be more in flow, ease and connected
- 5:37to your audience. So here's the four. The first one is practice
- 5:42from bullets. The second is get centred. The third is be present
- 5:49during your presentation. And the fourth is celebrate your
- 5:51wins. The first one, practice from your bullets. That means
- 5:58use bullets speak from your heart. Many of us write out our
- 6:05presentation word for word. And that is okay. So when you go to
- 6:10get ready for your presentation, you want to write out all the
- 6:12words that's okay, I'm okay with that. Do your research, get all
- 6:16the data and write out the words if you need to, if that
- 6:19supports, you just get it all out. When you go to practice,
- 6:24practice from bullets, practice from just the key words from
- 6:28your script, not word for word, let that go. That doesn't serve
- 6:33you. It's like training wheels. So you want an even remember,
- 6:37when you let go of the training wheels, it was a little scary at
- 6:39first. But once you start getting into the rhythm of the
- 6:43bike, you'll be okay. So as long as you commit to letting go of
- 6:47your training wheels, and commit to practising from bullets, and
- 6:50speaking from your heart, you're going to know it, you're going
- 6:53to feel more connected to your words. So when you practice,
- 6:57practice from the key points, and then the practice in front
- 7:01of people, right practice in front of your friends, or in
- 7:04front of a coach like me, some other coach that practice from
- 7:09the bullets. And then to get centred before the presentation.
- 7:16That means taking a moment to get connected to your heart, get
- 7:20connected to your competence and courage, just like I did before
- 7:24I got up on the surfboard, everything that he had just
- 7:27taught me he wanted me to dump it out into the water, all the
- 7:31moves like the stance, he just did let it go. So you had
- 7:35already spent the time researching writing out your
- 7:37script. Now I want you to let it go. And trust yourself. And that
- 7:43is why I want you to go take a moment to get centred because
- 7:47most people before their presentation, what are we doing,
- 7:51they're reading their notes, they're rehearsing it word for
- 7:54word, and then your that means you're going more up into your
- 7:57head. And when you're more up into your head, you're gonna
- 8:00overthink things. And you're not connected to the truth of who
- 8:04you are the competent person, it's a feeling, I want you to
- 8:08get connected to the feeling. And if you're in your head,
- 8:12you're robotic, you're not feeling
- 8:16so get centred. let go and trust that you know your stuff. And
- 8:21then get centred, take 10 minutes to get centred before
- 8:25the presentation.
- 8:28Third, once you're in the presentation, and you're talking
- 8:32and communicating and delivering your presentation, when you
- 8:35notice yourself starting to speed up, you're talking or if
- 8:39you're talking too fast, or if you feeling very nervous, use
- 8:43your breath and get present. Getting present means going back
- 8:48into your body. When you're nervous. That means you're
- 8:50thinking and you're in your head, go back into your body by
- 8:54using your senses, the five senses, Sight Sound hearing. And
- 9:00so for example, use your sight i That's the first thing I go to
- 9:03when I want to get present, I use my sight and I look for
- 9:07something in the room that catches my attention. For
- 9:09example, the water bottle, the red water bottle, the green
- 9:14plant, Jessica smile, I can use my sight then use my hearing the
- 9:21humming of the car that just drove by. What am I hearing? And
- 9:26so that is bringing me back into my body and not in my head.
- 9:30Right? You notice when I'm in my body, I'm using my senses. I
- 9:34only can use my senses through my body. And so that will bring
- 9:38me to the present moment. And when you're in the present
- 9:40moment in your body, you're more connected to the people you're
- 9:44connected to your heart. And so using your breath to slow
- 9:49yourself down to allow yourself the opportunity to slow down to
- 9:53allow yourself the opportunity to get present. That is the key
- 9:59overthink gain means nervousness going into your body getting
- 10:04present using your senses. Then the fourth one is, celebrate
- 10:09your wins. How many times have we finished a presentation and
- 10:14we're ruminating on what went wrong, what I didn't cover what
- 10:18point I miss. We want to also include what went well? What did
- 10:24I did I do, how did I feel and transition notice some courage
- 10:30notice that you did do it, notice that you gave it all your
- 10:33god it gave it all you had. So what went well celebrate the
- 10:38wins, closing it out that way. So by implementing these four
- 10:45strategies, tips, practice your bullets, get centred before your
- 10:53presentation, state prize present, celebrate your wins,
- 10:59you are going to move out of sounding robotic, you're going
- 11:03to move out from overthinking and staying in your head during
- 11:07your presentation. You're going to move out of that, and you're
- 11:11going to transition into a speaker, a leader that is
- 11:16connected, that is present, that is able to be with the audience.
- 11:22And allow the audience to see you for your authenticity.
- 11:26Because when you're robotic, and you're trying so hard to get
- 11:29things right, like I did on that surfboard, and Waikiki. That
- 11:34wasn't me. So we want to step away from being so perfect and
- 11:39getting everything right, because that's not you, you're
- 11:42human. So practising that four steps will allow you to move
- 11:47more into humanity into a person that may be imperfect that may
- 11:51mess it up. And that's okay. But the the truth of is, the truth
- 11:56of it is that when you allow yourself to mess up, more than
- 12:00likely doesn't even happen. And so it's a wonderful process.
- 12:05It's a wonderful, magical phenomenon, that when you allow
- 12:12yourself to mess up more than likely you won't. And so using
- 12:17those four techniques will help you to transition into that
- 12:21connected leader that is respected, that is heard, that
- 12:26moves people that inspires people to act, because you are
- 12:31human, and you are there, you know, you're there to support
- 12:34them, you know, you're there to make a bigger difference. And
- 12:37you're so connected to that, that feeling that passion that
- 12:40you have, just like I did, when I was on that circuit, I was so
- 12:44connected to just want you to be free, and having no fear. That
- 12:49is more important than the words I'm about to say the feeling in
- 12:53my body. And when that is exuding from every part of my
- 12:57beingness people feel it, people feel moved, people feel you, and
- 13:05you can feel them. And that is the connection, that is an
- 13:08inspiration. And that is what's going to move mountains. So we
- 13:14use those steps. We need more leaders to feel connected, we
- 13:18need more leaders to inspire others. And so join me for the
- 13:22next episode. And we will continue together to unleash our
- 13:27leadership voices and make a positive difference in this
- 13:31world. See you next time.
