- 0:48Speaker 1: so far? Great?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Thank you, great, beautiful day, wonderful patience. I have the
- 0:54Speaker 2: best job in the world.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm pretty jealous. It's it seems like a great,
- 0:59Speaker 1: a great job. And I know we talked a couple
- 1:01Speaker 1: of weeks ago, and if anyone wants to listen back
- 1:03Speaker 1: to the podcast over at WIBA dot com talked about
- 1:06Speaker 1: careers in veterinary medicine and us there's some great opportunities
- 1:10Speaker 1: out there. And speaking of careers, you've brought on some
- 1:15Speaker 1: more vets. Check out Veterinary and you guys have phenomenal
- 1:18Speaker 1: hours as it is, of course Monday through Wednesday and
- 1:21Speaker 1: then Friday through Sunday nine until five at checkout VET.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And you say, well, what about Thursdays? Well, check in vests.
- 1:27Speaker 2: You go hop, sorry, yeah, we're open on Thursdays.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Oh, let me put a line through that line because
- 1:34Speaker 1: guess what that also makes my life easier. Congratulations, that's
- 1:38Speaker 1: awesome to hear.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm going to mess it up a little
- 1:42Speaker 2: bit because we are going to start offering some evening
- 1:45Speaker 2: hours as well. But I'm not quite ready to share
- 1:48Speaker 2: these specifics on that. We're still kind of hammering out
- 1:50Speaker 2: the details. But there will be some evening hours too.
- 1:53Speaker 2: So we want to make this as easy as we
- 1:54Speaker 2: can to get you in during a time that's convenient
- 1:57Speaker 2: for you because those you know, those pesty jobs, and
- 2:00Speaker 2: then you've got the kids and the soccer and the
- 2:02Speaker 2: dance class and eight thousand other things that you've got
- 2:05Speaker 2: to be doing. So we're trying to keep our hours
- 2:06Speaker 2: as available for you as possible.
- 2:08Speaker 1: And that's what we talk about. That overall kind of
- 2:12Speaker 1: overarching theme at Checkout veterinarias convenience. And I know one
- 2:16Speaker 1: of the things, and one of the reasons why it's
- 2:17Speaker 1: so important, is if you make it easy for folks
- 2:20Speaker 1: to get their pets in, they get their pets in
- 2:21Speaker 1: more regularly, the pets are healthier, everybody's happier. And I
- 2:24Speaker 1: know one of the big conversation conversation that always happens
- 2:28Speaker 1: is whether they're little puppy dogs or they're older, older dogs,
- 2:32Speaker 1: older cats, or little kittens. Is weight and weight management
- 2:36Speaker 1: for just like for a human, weight management is a
- 2:39Speaker 1: very important aspect of a pet's life, isn't it.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Oh yeah, And I think it's significantly overlooked. I think
- 2:46Speaker 2: we just think there they look normal, or they're cute,
- 2:49Speaker 2: or we kind of like them fluffy, and you know,
- 2:51Speaker 2: suddenly we realize that they've put on a pound or
- 2:53Speaker 2: two a year, and pretty fast that adds up, especially
- 2:57Speaker 2: on a really small dog, So really important we are
- 3:00Speaker 2: keeping an eye on their weight. And one of the
- 3:02Speaker 2: best tools to use is your veterinary professionals and their
- 3:06Speaker 2: medical records, so you can go back and see how
- 3:08Speaker 2: old were they when you did their spay or neuter.
- 3:11Speaker 2: And two things with that. One is that gives you
- 3:14Speaker 2: a really good idea of what their adult weight should be.
- 3:16Speaker 2: It should be pretty close to that because they are
- 3:18Speaker 2: going to be close to adults when you do that,
- 3:20Speaker 2: so we don't want them to get too heavy too
- 3:22Speaker 2: much over that. The other is to realize that at
- 3:24Speaker 2: that spay and neuter, as soon as you remove their hormones,
- 3:28Speaker 2: if you decide to do that, you don't have to.
- 3:30Speaker 2: There are people who leave their dogs intact, or leave
- 3:32Speaker 2: the ovaries and do an over extrengthday, or leave the
- 3:35Speaker 2: testicles and do a vadectomy. You can do those things,
- 3:39Speaker 2: and those are procedures that we offer. But as soon
- 3:41Speaker 2: as you remove the ovaries in the testicles or you
- 3:44Speaker 2: don't have both either the overaries of the testicles, then
- 3:46Speaker 2: you instantly change their metabolic rate by twenty five percent.
- 3:51Speaker 2: So that means the day you go home from that
- 3:53Speaker 2: spay or neuter, you need to cut their colork and
- 3:55Speaker 2: take by twenty five percent. So if they're eating two
- 3:57Speaker 2: cups a day, that's a cup and a half instead
- 3:59Speaker 2: of two and very fast, your dog is going to
- 4:02Speaker 2: look at you like, maybe you forgot to put all
- 4:05Speaker 2: the food in my bowl, and they start begging at
- 4:08Speaker 2: the table, or they start knocking over the garbage can
- 4:10Speaker 2: and getting into that, or you know, doing things outside
- 4:13Speaker 2: that they wouldn't do, you know, stealing pizza from the kids.
- 4:16Speaker 2: My son used to be afraid to leave the dinner
- 4:17Speaker 2: table during a meal. He was afraid of the dog
- 4:20Speaker 2: his food during the middle of his meal. So those
- 4:23Speaker 2: are really important things to be aware of. So the
- 4:25Speaker 2: day you go home from that, say and now you
- 4:27Speaker 2: have to be measuring what they were taking in before
- 4:30Speaker 2: and immediately cut it by twenty five percent if you
- 4:33Speaker 2: don't want to end up with the dog that's overweight.
- 4:35Speaker 2: The problem with weight is it happens gradually. You don't
- 4:37Speaker 2: really notice until your friend or your neighbor or your
- 4:40Speaker 2: family comes over and says, what happened to your dog,
- 4:42Speaker 2: Because if you see him every day, you don't notice
- 4:44Speaker 2: that gradual change. It's sort of like you you don't
- 4:46Speaker 2: notice that your pants aren't fitting quite right. And so
- 4:49Speaker 2: sometimes it's that wake up call or when you go
- 4:51Speaker 2: to the vat a year later and say he gained
- 4:53Speaker 2: how much or what. So you know, these are really
- 4:57Speaker 2: important things, and your veterinary professional is very willing and
- 5:01Speaker 2: able to tell you this, but they may not want
- 5:03Speaker 2: to bring up the message of your dog is overweight
- 5:06Speaker 2: or your cat is overweight. So a lot of people
- 5:08Speaker 2: are really sensitive about that, and so veterinaries tend to
- 5:10Speaker 2: be maybe a little reluctant to bring it up. So
- 5:13Speaker 2: that's for you to say, is how is my pet's weight?
- 5:16Speaker 2: Am I feeding the right food? Am I feeding the
- 5:18Speaker 2: right amount of food? What can I do that can
- 5:19Speaker 2: improve this so that we have a good.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Handle on that, you know, doctor, it's interesting. Years ago
- 5:26Speaker 1: PBS there was I don't remember the exact title of
- 5:28Speaker 1: the program, but it was basically about the evolution of
- 5:31Speaker 1: domestic dogs and one of the things that they had
- 5:34Speaker 1: pointed out is dogs that kind of have that muscle
- 5:37Speaker 1: that can make their eyes look very sad and can
- 5:40Speaker 1: actually they're manipulating, like they were the ones that were
- 5:45Speaker 1: most successful. And I think for pet owners that could
- 5:48Speaker 1: be the hardest part. Is you mentioned, you know, adjusting
- 5:51Speaker 1: the diet dogs do and cats as well, And I
- 5:54Speaker 1: don't want to just say that cats don't have their
- 5:56Speaker 1: own little tricks. They can. They really know how to
- 6:00Speaker 1: play on your emotions and really really can make it
- 6:03Speaker 1: difficult as a pet owner to feed them properly.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and they do. They come over to the
- 6:09Speaker 2: table with those big brown eyes and they look very sad,
- 6:13Speaker 2: and you're like, oh, well, I'm just going to give
- 6:14Speaker 2: you a little snipple off my plate, and pretty quickly
- 6:17Speaker 2: it adds up into a lot of calories. So fruits
- 6:20Speaker 2: and vegetables are great treats for the dogs. If you
- 6:23Speaker 2: must feed off the table, feed fruits and vegetables other
- 6:25Speaker 2: than grapes and raisins, almost any other fruit and vegetable
- 6:27Speaker 2: that you're eating a spine. Of course, you know, no
- 6:30Speaker 2: sour cream on the potatoes, no cheese sauce on the broccoli,
- 6:32Speaker 2: but just straight up fruits and vegetables are great snacks
- 6:36Speaker 2: for the dogs, and of course they're great for us too.
- 6:38Speaker 2: They're high in fiber, they're high in an oxidants, they're
- 6:40Speaker 2: lowering calories. So all those things that you and I
- 6:43Speaker 2: know we should be eating because our mother tried to
- 6:45Speaker 2: tell us that, or we try to tell our kids
- 6:47Speaker 2: that and they're like, oh, but I want a cookie now,
- 6:49Speaker 2: you don't need a cookie and a dog treat can
- 6:51Speaker 2: have one hundred calories and up in a little treat.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And if your dog's chloric intake is only supposed to
- 6:57Speaker 2: be three hundred calories a day, and now you bump
- 7:00Speaker 2: to four hundred with one tree, that very quickly is
- 7:03Speaker 2: going to pack the weight on. So those are important
- 7:06Speaker 2: things now there is there are some charts online like
- 7:09Speaker 2: Purina has a metabolic calculator chart. You can put in
- 7:11Speaker 2: your pet breed and their weight and it will help
- 7:13Speaker 2: you to calculate how many calories they should take in.
- 7:16Speaker 2: And the average dog food is going to have about
- 7:20Speaker 2: three hundred killo calories and a cup of food, so
- 7:22Speaker 2: you can read the label on the bag. You just
- 7:24Speaker 2: have to turn it over and look at the fine prints.
- 7:26Speaker 2: You might put on your readers, or you know, get
- 7:28Speaker 2: the magnifying glass out because it's really small, or you
- 7:30Speaker 2: can look online before you go to the pet store.
- 7:33Speaker 2: You can sit down at the computer and say, well,
- 7:34Speaker 2: how many calories are in a cup of food and
- 7:37Speaker 2: you can find some that are low calorie that maybe
- 7:39Speaker 2: two hundred and twenty two hundred and fifty calories. If
- 7:41Speaker 2: you have a dog that's overweight, you want to switch
- 7:43Speaker 2: them to one of those foods so that they're still
- 7:45Speaker 2: getting the amount of volume and they're still getting the nutrition,
- 7:48Speaker 2: the minerals of vitamins, the protein, all the things that
- 7:50Speaker 2: they need, but not getting the calories. So do some
- 7:52Speaker 2: pre planning before you go pet food shopping, if you
- 7:55Speaker 2: go to the store, if you go online, look at
- 7:57Speaker 2: those killo calories per cup. It's really easy to find.
- 7:59Speaker 2: You just click on the pet food, click on it
- 8:02Speaker 2: and say you know ingredients and it'll tell you that
- 8:04Speaker 2: killer calories per cup. And so those are important tools
- 8:07Speaker 2: for you to have.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Well, doctor, what is the heart? I feel like a
- 8:11Speaker 1: lot there's like cat people that have this that are
- 8:13Speaker 1: the kind of the attitude of what's the you know,
- 8:16Speaker 1: what's the harm in having of a big you know,
- 8:19Speaker 1: the fat cat or you know. I think for dogs,
- 8:22Speaker 1: I think most people are are generally like I want
- 8:24Speaker 1: to keep them fit. But what about that? What are
- 8:26Speaker 1: some of the health health concerns and health problems that
- 8:28Speaker 1: arise from from obesity and pets.
- 8:32Speaker 2: They're all the same things we have. They have an
- 8:34Speaker 2: increased risk of cancer, increased risk of joint disease, so
- 8:37Speaker 2: knee problems, dog chair cruciates. Dogs have hyptysplasia, cats can
- 8:41Speaker 2: tear their cruci It's all the things. Arthritis, diabetes, big problem,
- 8:46Speaker 2: heart disease, big problem. I had a client that came
- 8:49Speaker 2: in years ago and he had two overweight cats, and
- 8:52Speaker 2: I said, you really have to get some weight off
- 8:53Speaker 2: of these two guys. They're going to end up with diabetes.
- 8:56Speaker 2: And he goes, well, my mom, my, dad, and I'm
- 8:58Speaker 2: all diabetics. Oh you know, well, I'm oh no, you're
- 9:01Speaker 2: not just going to say, oh well, I'm just going
- 9:02Speaker 2: to give another injection of inflin. It's just not that
- 9:05Speaker 2: good for you to be diabetic. So all those things
- 9:08Speaker 2: are really important that you do good weight management so
- 9:11Speaker 2: that you don't end up with those issues. And I
- 9:13Speaker 2: don't know anybody at the end of their pet's life
- 9:14Speaker 2: that said, yeah, you know, two years of God's good
- 9:17Speaker 2: I didn't you know, I didn't care if you live
- 9:19Speaker 2: to be fourteen. No, everybody wants them to live a
- 9:22Speaker 2: little bit longer. They just want a little bit more
- 9:24Speaker 2: time with their pets. So this is the gift that
- 9:26Speaker 2: your veterinarian can give you. I can give you is
- 9:28Speaker 2: to say, we know pets that are not overweight live
- 9:32Speaker 2: two years longer. Dogs live two years longer. There was
- 9:35Speaker 2: a study done by Purina a number of years ago
- 9:37Speaker 2: by Dennis Lawler that shows that if the dogs are
- 9:40Speaker 2: in an ideal body condition, they have two more years
- 9:43Speaker 2: of life. And so this is a gift you can
- 9:45Speaker 2: give to your pet. Your vet can give to you
- 9:47Speaker 2: by looking at the record saying this is what your
- 9:49Speaker 2: pet's goal weight should be. Let's have you come in
- 9:51Speaker 2: once a month, put you on the scale, see how
- 9:53Speaker 2: you're doing on weight, because it can be hard to
- 9:55Speaker 2: waig I'm at home. If you can stand on the
- 9:57Speaker 2: scale and hold the dog, and then you stand on
- 9:58Speaker 2: the scale without the dog, weag you know, compare the difference.
- 10:01Speaker 2: That's great. But if you weigh two hundred pounds and
- 10:03Speaker 2: the dog weighs eighty pounds, you're going to top out
- 10:06Speaker 2: the scale, Your scale and your bathroom isn't going to
- 10:08Speaker 2: go that high. So you know, go to the vet,
- 10:11Speaker 2: get them on the scale, get an idea, record it,
- 10:13Speaker 2: and then you can very carefully get some weight off.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Now we don't want them to lose weight too quickly,
- 10:17Speaker 2: just like for us, but it's really important that we
- 10:20Speaker 2: do this cats, especially if you try to get weight
- 10:22Speaker 2: off of them too fast, they can end up with
- 10:24Speaker 2: a liver problem called typadic lipidosis, so it's not safe
- 10:27Speaker 2: for them to lose more than about a pound a
- 10:29Speaker 2: month for a cat. But there's lots of pet food
- 10:32Speaker 2: management diets on the market. Hills makes the wonderful line
- 10:35Speaker 2: of diets, rail Cana does, Purina does, so you can
- 10:37Speaker 2: go to their website take a look. Some are prescription,
- 10:40Speaker 2: some are non prescription, Some are higher in fiber. Some
- 10:43Speaker 2: put all carnetene into the food to help improve metabolism.
- 10:46Speaker 2: There's a lot of tools.
- 10:47Speaker 1: That we can use.
- 10:48Speaker 2: You can give the fruits and vegetables, so if you
- 10:50Speaker 2: cut back the amount of food, you can throw half
- 10:52Speaker 2: a cup of green beans or a cup of green
- 10:53Speaker 2: beans into their bowl because there's thirty calories and a
- 10:55Speaker 2: cup of green beans and three hundred and a cup
- 10:57Speaker 2: of dog foods, so you can fill up your pet.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Because we don't want them reading the garbage and rummaging
- 11:03Speaker 2: around outside to try and find food. If they're hungry,
- 11:05Speaker 2: they're going to feel like cobwebs are growing in their stomach,
- 11:08Speaker 2: like you forgot to feed them. So we don't want
- 11:10Speaker 2: them hungry. We want them at an ideal body weight
- 11:12Speaker 2: with the amount of nutrition that they need. So those
- 11:15Speaker 2: are some tools that you have at your disposal. They're
- 11:17Speaker 2: pretty easy to get your hands done, and your vet
- 11:19Speaker 2: is going to be more than happy to help you.
- 11:22Speaker 2: If you express to them a concern, they may not
- 11:24Speaker 2: bring it up, but you should bring it up at
- 11:26Speaker 2: the visit and say, how is my diet, how is
- 11:28Speaker 2: my pets diet? What can I do? What is their
- 11:30Speaker 2: weight supposed to be? Can you help me with this?
- 11:33Speaker 2: And many times they'll have a technician or an assistant
- 11:35Speaker 2: that was willing to work with you on a weight
- 11:38Speaker 2: management diets. Very cool.
- 11:39Speaker 1: It sounds a really really great and of course a
- 11:42Speaker 1: great important conversation to have. It's a great data start

- 13:03Speaker 1: three one eight sixty seven hundred. That's six eight three
- 13:05Speaker 1: one eight sixty seven hundred talking about the importance of
- 13:08Speaker 1: keeping your pet at a healthy weight In Doctor. We
- 13:11Speaker 1: touched on a little bit in that earlier segment about
- 13:15Speaker 1: you know, dogs and cats find ways to you know,
- 13:19Speaker 1: they toy with you. They know they know they've got you.
- 13:23Speaker 1: There are things that you can do, though you mentioned
- 13:25Speaker 1: giving them healthy snacks and some alternatives. Are there other
- 13:28Speaker 1: things out there? I know I've seen like certain bowls
- 13:30Speaker 1: for dogs that kind of make it a little more
- 13:32Speaker 1: difficult for them to I think some of those, like labs,
- 13:34Speaker 1: are things tend to kind of gorge themselves. Do that
- 13:37Speaker 1: stuff work work? Well? Do those tools work?
- 13:39Speaker 2: They do? Yeah, they do. There's a low feeders for dogs,
- 13:44Speaker 2: flow feeders for cats. My favorite one for cats is
- 13:46Speaker 2: made by Doc and Phoebees, and it's basically a little
- 13:50Speaker 2: mouse shaped feeding device that you measure these food. It's
- 13:53Speaker 2: goggle measuring cup that comes in it. They're shaped like
- 13:55Speaker 2: a little mouse. And then you put those around the
- 13:57Speaker 2: house in different places every day. So one day you
- 13:59Speaker 2: feed in the kitchen, then one day's feed in the bathroom,
- 14:01Speaker 2: one day you feat in the launder room, and one
- 14:02Speaker 2: day you's feeding the shoe in your closet and so
- 14:05Speaker 2: the cat, instead of just getting up and waddling across
- 14:07Speaker 2: the floor and going over their food dish and then
- 14:09Speaker 2: waddling back to the couch, has to go looking for
- 14:12Speaker 2: their food. Now, you don't feed them in six places
- 14:14Speaker 2: all the same day. You move it around so that
- 14:17Speaker 2: on Monday it's in the kitchen and on Tuesday it's
- 14:20Speaker 2: in the laundering room, and so they have to go
- 14:21Speaker 2: searching and they don't know it's Tuesday, so they don't
- 14:24Speaker 2: know Tuesday is laundry room day. They go wandering through
- 14:26Speaker 2: the hall house multiple times a day looking for their food.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Because it's really hard to take a cat for a walk.
- 14:30Speaker 2: You can't take them out for a jog. So that's
- 14:33Speaker 2: a really great trick for cats, is not just the
- 14:35Speaker 2: slow feeder, but the hiding devices that you can use
- 14:39Speaker 2: around the house. For dogs, slow feeders do help plow
- 14:41Speaker 2: them down. And of course dogs can get more exercise,
- 14:44Speaker 2: so if they swim, that's great. There's pools you can
- 14:46Speaker 2: take your pet too on a weekly basis and get
- 14:49Speaker 2: the dog in the pool for a swimming exercise. This
- 14:51Speaker 2: time of year is perfect to get out and walk.
- 14:53Speaker 2: It's not too hot, it's not too cold, it's not
- 14:55Speaker 2: too humid, the bugs aren't bad. So get out there,
- 14:58Speaker 2: get up in the morning, take your dog for a walk,
- 15:00Speaker 2: after work in the evening, take the dog out for
- 15:03Speaker 2: another walk. So get some exercise for yourself and the dog.
- 15:05Speaker 2: It's a wonderful combination of ways that you can get
- 15:08Speaker 2: things going. And so that combination of increasing their activity
- 15:11Speaker 2: level and decreasing their caloric intake is going to be
- 15:14Speaker 2: magical in getting some weight off. And you want to
- 15:16Speaker 2: know what your goal is for your pet, so that
- 15:19Speaker 2: you know how close to being successful are you and
- 15:22Speaker 2: how much further do you need to go, and do
- 15:23Speaker 2: you need to continue the prescription food or can you
- 15:26Speaker 2: go back to a weight maintenance diet instead of a
- 15:28Speaker 2: weight loss diet. So there's a lot of different techniques
- 15:31Speaker 2: that you can use. And I keep going back to
- 15:33Speaker 2: the veterinarian saying that they can help you because this
- 15:35Speaker 2: is really a medical thing for your pet to have
- 15:37Speaker 2: involvement with is your vet and your vet text need
- 15:41Speaker 2: to have some input into this so that we make
- 15:42Speaker 2: sure that they're healthy. We don't have any magical drugs
- 15:45Speaker 2: for weight loss in dogs, although el carnatine is an
- 15:48Speaker 2: amino acid that get that to some of the pet
- 15:50Speaker 2: foods as the senior diet have some of these in
- 15:52Speaker 2: them to help. And of course if your pets on
- 15:55Speaker 2: a prescription diet for another health concern, you don't want
- 15:57Speaker 2: to interrupt that for weight loss, but you can talk
- 16:00Speaker 2: to your vet because some of these products a combination products.
- 16:04Speaker 2: We have products that are low stress and improve bladder
- 16:08Speaker 2: health and can still get weight off. So you can
- 16:10Speaker 2: find a combination products from Surina, from Hills, from Royal
- 16:14Speaker 2: o Canaan that can help you with those. So be
- 16:16Speaker 2: sure you're speaking to your veterinary professional about what can
- 16:19Speaker 2: you do. Because if we can do this with diet,
- 16:22Speaker 2: like manage their bladder or manage their joints or whatever
- 16:24Speaker 2: happens to be and not have to use a drugs,
- 16:26Speaker 2: I think it's always best to do it with diet
- 16:29Speaker 2: and exercise instead of having to do a drug based
- 16:31Speaker 2: weight loss program or drug based whatever you know, health problem, joint,
- 16:36Speaker 2: bladder's heart, whatever it is. We've got lots of great
- 16:38Speaker 2: diets on the market from these three companies that are
- 16:41Speaker 2: really the pioneers in developing pet food for specific problems.
- 16:45Speaker 2: So there's some really great stuff you can do. I
- 16:48Speaker 2: don't buy treats for my dogs. My dogs never see
- 16:51Speaker 2: milk bones, They never get any of that stuff. My
- 16:54Speaker 2: dogs get fruits and vegetables. The little cheese puffs that
- 16:57Speaker 2: they sell at some of the stores, those are low
- 17:00Speaker 2: in calories. Cheerios great snacks. There are three cheerios to
- 17:04Speaker 2: one calorie. So there's lots of things we can do.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Talking this morning with doctor Marty Greer of Checkout Veterinary,
- 17:10Speaker 1: talking this week about your pets weight and of course
- 17:13Speaker 1: ways to ways to keep them healthy, maintain that healthy weight.
- 17:18Speaker 1: And as we talk with doctor Greer, the importance of
- 17:21Speaker 1: the doctor the patient the pet, that relationship and that conversation.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I know in talking with you, and I know at
- 17:29Speaker 1: Checkout Vet, you and all the veterinarians at Checkout Vet.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Overall pet health is absolutely vital. Do you guys help
- 17:37Speaker 1: people sometimes put together an action plan for pets? They say,
- 17:41Speaker 1: you know, pet is overweight? What can we do? Do
- 17:44Speaker 1: you guys work with them to kind of put together
- 17:46Speaker 1: some steps to to really put into practice.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Absolutely, we're more than happy to help you select a diet,
- 17:53Speaker 2: figure out the number of cat calories per day, the
- 17:56Speaker 2: number of cups or tibbles, pieces that you can put
- 17:59Speaker 2: into the dish, get them on the scale monthly, get
- 18:02Speaker 2: an exercise program set up for you. We're really happy
- 18:04Speaker 2: to help you with that because it's our goal to
- 18:07Speaker 2: do the same for you. Is that we want this
- 18:10Speaker 2: pet to live as long as possible because it's good
- 18:12Speaker 2: for you, it's good for our hearts to see how
- 18:14Speaker 2: well the pets are doing. So we absolutely want to
- 18:17Speaker 2: make sure that we're helping you with those things. So
- 18:19Speaker 2: don't hesitate to ask, don't hesitate to question if there's
- 18:22Speaker 2: something more that we can do for you, because we
- 18:24Speaker 2: definitely want this to be a lifelong good experience for you.
- 18:28Speaker 2: And that's what my doctors are there for, is to
- 18:30Speaker 2: help you with those kinds of things.
- 18:32Speaker 1: And one final thing too, doctor I want to ask
- 18:34Speaker 1: you about is when we're talking about some of the
- 18:35Speaker 1: physical activity, and I know personally, when I'm more physically engaged,
- 18:39Speaker 1: my diet just naturally changes. I don't know, my body
- 18:42Speaker 1: craves more salads and things like that and less so
- 18:46Speaker 1: that fried stuff. Do we see the same with pets,
- 18:48Speaker 1: is like as you get them on maybe a better
- 18:50Speaker 1: diet and more of a healthy regimen where they're just
- 18:53Speaker 1: kind of some of that early begging and prodding kind
- 18:57Speaker 1: of fades back a little bit.
- 19:00Speaker 2: I don't know if they really have that kind of control,
- 19:04Speaker 2: not sure about that, but it's the only treats they
- 19:06Speaker 2: get is a carrot or a banana instead of a milk bone.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Pretty quickly they're going to enjoy that. And you're going
- 19:13Speaker 2: to figure out fast which vegetables and fruits each of
- 19:16Speaker 2: your pets likes, because not all of them are going
- 19:18Speaker 2: to like the same thing. Which makes it kind of
- 19:20Speaker 2: fun too, is you're going to have somebody celery and
- 19:22Speaker 2: somebody broccoli, and some that look at banana and goes, yeah,
- 19:24Speaker 2: that's really awesome. Most dogs don't like citrus, but hey,
- 19:29Speaker 2: if you have a dog that he's oranges and you
- 19:30Speaker 2: like oranges, go for it. You know, grapefruit, So pretty
- 19:33Speaker 2: much any of the fruits and vegetables other than grapes
- 19:35Speaker 2: and raisins can be something you can share with your pet. So,
- 19:39Speaker 2: you know, peel two oranges and have an orange with
- 19:42Speaker 2: your dog and the kit It's a great way to
- 19:44Speaker 2: get your kids eat vegetables and fruits is to have
- 19:47Speaker 2: them share with the dog because then you don't really mind.
- 19:50Speaker 2: It's not like they're eating half the kid's pizza. And
- 19:52Speaker 2: for the cats, it's really important when you are cleaning
- 19:55Speaker 2: up after you have dinner in the kitchen that you
- 19:57Speaker 2: put the dishes into the sink with water or to
- 20:00Speaker 2: the dishwasher, because those cats are really good at getting
- 20:02Speaker 2: on the countertops and helping themselves the elect over milk
- 20:05Speaker 2: from the cereal or the ice cream or the soup
- 20:08Speaker 2: or whatever it happens to be. So don't let your
- 20:10Speaker 2: cat become, you know, a victim of getting into the
- 20:15Speaker 2: sink for those dirty dishes. Just clean the kitchen up,
- 20:18Speaker 2: pop them in the dishwasher and be done with it
- 20:20Speaker 2: so that the cat's not hanging out on the countertop
- 20:22Speaker 2: getting extra calories.
- 20:23Speaker 1: The cat's just trying to help out. Doctor Oh yeah,
- 20:27Speaker 1: yeah yeah. Talking this story with doctor Marty Greer of
