- 0:00Hello, everyone, and welcome back to Kenny.
- 0:03Conversation brought to you by Jags, the leader in high
- 0:07performance aftermarket car parts.
- 0:10Remember to go to jags.com to fix your hot rod or your
- 0:14everyday vehicle up. Well, you're looking at her.
- 0:19She took NASCAR by storm about one month ago and we're going to
- 0:23talk about that and a little bit ago, Tony Bridinger.
- 0:27Tony, how are you? Hi, how are you?
- 0:31Doing really good. A little cloudy out here today.
- 0:34So where are we talking to you from?
- 0:37So I'm in Morrisville area. I usually say Charlotte, but I'm
- 0:40sure you know what Morrisville is, and it's cloudy here too,
- 0:42unfortunately. Yeah, you're, you're a
- 0:45California girl, aren't you? I am.
- 0:47So I was born and raised in the San Francisco area, and then I
- 0:50came out here just for racing, for NASCAR, and this is kind of
- 0:53where I'm based out of now. Well, let's get right to it.
- 0:58I follow you on all social media outlets, but you really, you're
- 1:04really shocked the racing world went about a month ago.
- 1:09I don't know really who it was. Maybe Adam Stern, maybe Jeff
- 1:12Gluck. Somebody said the most social
- 1:17media followers in NASCAR and all of a sudden it was Tony
- 1:22Bridinger and everybody went, hold on, what?
- 1:25It's not Dale Junior two point what 2.12.2?
- 1:32Million. Yeah, 2.2 million followers on
- 1:35Instagram. So tell me all about that day or
- 1:39that week when it was announced that everybody has all their
- 1:43eyes on you. Yeah, it was kind of funny.
- 1:45I feel like it caused some commotion.
- 1:47I believe it was Adam Stern that put that out.
- 1:50But yeah, I mean, it's something that I've been working towards
- 1:53for a long time and I'm still like 2.2 million.
- 1:56Like I want more than that. I feel like there's still, you
- 1:58know, endless growth that you can have as a brand.
- 2:02So for me, I feel like the number is kind of small in a
- 2:05sense. I mean, when you start comparing
- 2:06it to some like bigger athletes and stuff like a Serena Williams
- 2:09or something that I'm still some ways behind, but all part of
- 2:13building. A lot of people say to people
- 2:17like me and you, we understood. Even listen, even though I'm an
- 2:21old guy, I understood social media when it first came in.
- 2:26And our sponsors, they look at those numbers.
- 2:29Some of the older people go, some of the older people go
- 2:32there. What are you doing paying
- 2:33attention to that? But that is an important number
- 2:36for our sponsors, isn't it? Yeah, for sure.
- 2:39I do feel like a lot of people are like, oh, payless attention
- 2:41to social media and focus more on racing.
- 2:44That's like, I can't go racing unless I have sponsors behind
- 2:47me. And exactly, they look at social
- 2:49media. So I mean, there is definitely a
- 2:51fine balance to it, but I'm not going to be at the racetrack
- 2:54without my partners and they're not going to be with me without
- 2:57my social media. So they all kind of go hand in
- 2:59hand. But I do feel like outside
- 3:01looking in, some people don't always understand that whole
- 3:04aspect of it all. There's an old saying, if you're
- 3:07going to play, you got to pay. So let's get right to that.
- 3:13I am outside of St. Louis, MO by about 20 miles and
- 3:17I'm in Arnold, MO and there is a big old billboard off Interstate
- 3:2355. So it's almost on your way to
- 3:25Memphis, TN. And there's this beautiful
- 3:27billboard and we're going to have Charlie Marlowe drop that
- 3:30in right now. I, I took a picture of it and
- 3:34there you are. So Cane's chicken, Raising
- 3:39Cane's chicken Nuggets. This is a national marketing
- 3:44campaign. You are all over America.
- 3:48Tell me about this sponsor and how awesome it is that they
- 3:53really promote you and you're racing.
- 3:56Yeah, I love working with Raising Canes.
- 3:58They really have really embraced me in my journey and they truly
- 4:02believe in me, which is amazing to see.
- 4:04They've been really supportive of me and the campaign I think
- 4:06has been really successful and yeah, I'm excited.
- 4:10It's been cool to see people send in the photos of the
- 4:12billboards and my cardboard cutouts and stuff, but they've
- 4:15been really amazing to work with and very cool to work with a
- 4:18brand that really aligns with me and really champions me and my
- 4:21journey. So it's been amazing.
- 4:23And that's really what it's all about.
- 4:25I learned that from my Big Brother Rusty.
- 4:27He, you know, he had Miller brewing the beer and he's and
- 4:31they said, listen, Rusty Wallace winning on the racetrack, that's
- 4:35just a bonus. But we don't plan on that.
- 4:38We market Rusty and all the bars with the stand ups, you know,
- 4:43whether it's the pool lights over the pool tables.
- 4:46So I see those cardboard stand ups, I see these billboards.
- 4:50And that's really what it's all about.
- 4:52Is that marketing? We we got to sell product or
- 4:55else we don't go racing. Exactly, Yeah, I mean, I think
- 4:59it's just about, you know, brand awareness, getting the brand
- 5:02attention and also selling their product.
- 5:04You at the end of the day, my job is to get more people to go
- 5:07to raising canes and give the brand some more awareness.
- 5:10So yeah, it's been a great partnership so far.
- 5:14Yeah, I have only amazing things to say about and it's been
- 5:17somewhere that I always go to like after races whenever it's
- 5:21around. So it's kind of like cool full
- 5:22circle moment for me to be able to like actually work with a
- 5:26brand that, you know, it's like my favorite fast food chain.
- 5:28So it was very cool that all kind of worked out like that.
- 5:31Listen, I I always talk about the uncomfortable subjects.
- 5:36I married. I married the love of my life.
- 5:39She's she's dark complected. I always said she looked like an
- 5:43Indian, you know, and I like the girls that kind of look like
- 5:47Raquel Welch. I was talking to my daughter
- 5:50Brittany yesterday and Brittany's 32.
- 5:54And so my daughter Brittany said that Tony Brydinger, you, she
- 6:01said you're exotic looking and I so I looked it up.
- 6:04You're, you're a Lebanese German descent.
- 6:07You you were kind of reminded me of my wife.
- 6:12Tell me about do do you know about your your history even
- 6:16though you were born in California?
- 6:18Yeah. So my mom was born in Lebanon,
- 6:20Beirut, so I still have a lot of family out there.
- 6:24And she cooks amazing Lebanese food.
- 6:27So I do feel like it's very much, it's kind of how I was
- 6:30raised was just, you know, my mom's cooking and kind of like
- 6:33her culture. So yeah.
- 6:35Yeah, that, that's really cool. My my CPA accountant, he's from
- 6:39India. And boy, I tell you what, I'm a
- 6:41better person. He has taught me so much.
- 6:44He keeps me calm down because he's calm and I'm crazy.
- 6:49So I like I like meeting people from all over the world.
- 6:53So well, listen, let let's get right into it.
- 6:57Let's let's go back and forth. That's what Kenny conversation
- 7:00is all about. So you began racing Go karts at
- 7:05age 9 and you know, with your sister Annie, I might say.
- 7:11Tell me about where did this come from?
- 7:15When did you start liking racing?
- 7:18Yeah, probably the day that I tried to go Kart was the day
- 7:20that I started liking racing. I don't even think I knew what
- 7:23NASCAR was before I even hopped in a go Kart.
- 7:27It really just kind of opened up this whole new world for me.
- 7:29And, you know, my dad has always had like, a love for cars and he
- 7:33has a background in mechanical engineering and saw this
- 7:36billboard for go Kart classes and decided to just take me and
- 7:39my sister there to try it. He really had no intention of us
- 7:43wanting to pursue it, but we both fell in love with it and
- 7:46begged him for a go Kart. And yeah, for a long time was
- 7:49just my dad, my sister and myself just going up to the go
- 7:52Kart track every weekend, just kind of spending like quality
- 7:55time together. And I was very competitive right
- 7:57away. And I told my dad I want to be a
- 7:59race car driver, but I think it was just, for a long time, just
- 8:02something fun for us to do. And he probably figured it was
- 8:05just going to be a little phase. You, you remind me a little bit
- 8:09of a Jade Evidisian, both of you from the West Coast.
- 8:13You look, you look like you could be sisters up.
- 8:15So as we look a little forward here, you're you're very young,
- 8:19you're extremely young. So it's not going to be a real
- 8:23long Kenny conversation 'cause you're just a baby. 2016 USAC
- 8:29Speed 2 Western US Asphalt Midget series champion.
- 8:35So you were no joke right away. I mean, you won a championship
- 8:40in 2016. Tell me that about that
- 8:42experience. Yeah, so I grew up racing go
- 8:45karts and then around, I think it was age 15, my dad saw like
- 8:50AI think it was a pavement Midget at one of the go Kart
- 8:53races on display. And he knew nothing about, you
- 8:55know, really open wheel or Midget racing, but was like,
- 8:58hey, do you guys want to try this?
- 9:00And I was like, sure, why not? So I ended up doing a test and
- 9:04then again, kind of like similar with the go karts.
- 9:06Our dad got us pavement midgets and kind of same thing, just my
- 9:10dad taking me and my sister to the track and I raced it for a
- 9:13few years. My first couple years, I think I
- 9:15finished like second and like the western pavement points.
- 9:18Then my third year I got the championship, but I I had been
- 9:21wanting to raise late models for a while at that point.
- 9:24My dad told me once you get a championship, I'll, you know,
- 9:27kind of give you like my praise to go ahead and move on and race
- 9:30some late models. So kind of like when I got that
- 9:32championship, I was like, OK, I'm going to go race some stock
- 9:35cars. But it wasn't that easy of a
- 9:37process. But in my mind I thought like,
- 9:39OK, cool, on to the next step after that.
- 9:41So it was a good stepping stone for me.
- 9:42You're, you're so nervy. You know, if you were a guide,
- 9:47say you got big balls. You, you, you jump you, you
- 9:50know, you, you're, you're a, you are a Victoria's Secret model
- 9:56and you get in those gnarly race cars.
- 10:01I mean, you know, I guess Alan Sir Junior said it right with
- 10:05his Valvoline sponsor. He said, you know, if you're not
- 10:07a little afraid, you're lying. You get in these big cars and
- 10:12you mix it up with the guys at Daytona and Phoenix, and I mean,
- 10:16you're going at it. You just had that nerve from the
- 10:20start of your life. Or where did it come from?
- 10:23Yeah, it's funny because I feel like in like my day-to-day life,
- 10:26like outside of the race car, I feel like I'm very different.
- 10:28Like when I'm in the race car, it's kind of like an alter ego
- 10:31and I'm definitely a lot more aggressive and not as
- 10:34empathetic. And yeah, it's funny because I
- 10:37feel like it's almost like a polar opposite of me that's kind
- 10:40of let out when I'm in the race car.
- 10:41But yeah, I feel like early on, when I was little, I was just
- 10:44very competitive. I've always been like very
- 10:46ambitious. No dream was ever too big for
- 10:48me, so yeah. But I'm definitely different
- 10:51person. When I'm in the race car, I'm
- 10:53nearly as smiley and happy. I, I raced with a guy named
- 10:59Terry Labonte. He's a two time NASCAR cup
- 11:01champion and, and Terry was so calm, so calm.
- 11:06And when he got on the racetrack, it was like, whoa,
- 11:09this does this does not match the guy that I, I'm racing with.
- 11:13So let's go a little further here.
- 11:17You are an ARCA Menard series driver part time in the East and
- 11:22West series and part time in the Truck Series.
- 11:25This is 1 stat that I really like about you, 47 ARCA races
- 11:31with 17 top 10s. So I mean, you're, you're
- 11:36getting it done. You're, you're still going
- 11:37through the ranks, but you, it seems like you found a little
- 11:41bit of a home in the ARCA series of how has your year started
- 11:46out? How do you think you're doing,
- 11:49you know, at the start of your career?
- 11:51Yeah. So this year I'm running the
- 11:53full season in the National ARCA Series.
- 11:56I think it's like 2021 races where two races.
- 11:59And so far we kicked off the year at Daytona and then a few
- 12:03weeks ago we were at Phoenix. So I think so far so good.
- 12:06Daytona was kind of not the best.
- 12:08That's kind of just part of Daytona, I guess, but Phoenix is
- 12:12kind of a solid weekend for us. So I feel confident going ahead.
- 12:15I think for me, just improving off of everything last year, I
- 12:20feel like last year was a very big growth year for me.
- 12:22And honestly, at the time of last year, I wasn't even really
- 12:26thinking about doing ARCA for a third year.
- 12:28I was like, oh, maybe I'll just move up to the Truck Series.
- 12:31But then last year I feel like I made so much progress in the
- 12:33ARCA series and I just felt like there was so much left for me to
- 12:36still achieve in that series. And I felt like, well, my notes
- 12:39will just kind of keep on building that momentum and run
- 12:41the full season this year and hopefully get the championship.
- 12:44Yeah, you're doing the right thing.
- 12:46There's an old saying that you're very young, but there was
- 12:50a great race car driver, my hero Dick Trickle, and his phrase
- 12:55was, you know, crawl before you walk.
- 12:58And then in the race you must first finish to finish first.
- 13:02So you're doing that, you're putting your reps in, you're
- 13:05getting your career started. You've done a lot of other
- 13:08things outside of of racing and that that I want to talk about
- 13:13something that I really like the future of women.
- 13:17MO, the Motorsports Summit 12 ladies, you all went to Phoenix,
- 13:23you raced go karts, you raised $100,000 for the Women's Sports
- 13:31Foundation. That's a lot of money.
- 13:33Tony, tell me about that, that whole situation.
- 13:37Yeah, those are really amazing event.
- 13:38It was the day before I raised at Phoenix and raised in Kansas
- 13:43on the car and helped us put that whole thing together.
- 13:45So basically I deemed a bunch of the girls and said, hey, you
- 13:49know, can I fly you guys out to come raise go cards with me and
- 13:52watch the ARCA race. And that's kind of how it
- 13:54started off. And the event turned out
- 13:56amazing, better than I could have expected.
- 13:59Honestly. I think the girls had an amazing
- 14:00time and so it's really great to be able to see the future of the
- 14:03sport and actually do something hands on with them and really
- 14:05help them and share my story with them.
- 14:08And then also get them hooked up with, you know, go karting for a
- 14:10day and racing gear because that's all very expensive stuff.
- 14:13So they all seem to really enjoy it and also they all made
- 14:16friends with each other and I feel like it was an opportunity
- 14:19just to bring, you know, females in the sport together and hang
- 14:22out and do something fun. You're doing good things.
- 14:25And then once again, raising Canes, your sponsor, they help
- 14:30you with it. You raised $100,000.
- 14:33Listen, that's the type of sponsorship you want.
- 14:35And and another thing I see that's going on out there is the
- 14:39sisterhood of Speed. Toyota loves you.
- 14:43Once again, my daughter Brittany, she brings it up.
- 14:45She goes, dad, she's got a commercial on Toyota and she
- 14:48brings it up on her phone and there you are with other ladies.
- 14:52I was sponsored by Toyota for seven years.
- 14:56I know Paul Doshaw and my boss before that was Ed Laukas, and I
- 14:59know the whole bunch, David Wilson.
- 15:02What has it been like, you know, for you to work with Toyota and
- 15:06do those national commercials? Yeah, Toyota has been really
- 15:10great to work with. I feel like they've really
- 15:12championed a lot of female drivers more than than the other
- 15:14manufacturers. So it's been really awesome to
- 15:17see. I feel like it's such a
- 15:18welcoming environment and have a great development program.
- 15:21I was just at the performance facility earlier today.
- 15:24I train there every week. So they have a lot of different
- 15:27things that they help us with on and off the track.
- 15:30And it's great for development. And yeah, I love, I love my home
- 15:34with them. Tell me about what you just
- 15:37talked about. You train at Toyota.
- 15:40You're you're a girl, but you're working out, You're working on
- 15:44your reps What do you do to get ready to be a race car driver?
- 15:49Yeah, racing's so much more physical than I think people can
- 15:52really kind of understand, because I feel like the easiest
- 15:54thing to relate to is just driving your car down the
- 15:57highway, which is so different to that.
- 15:59I mean, the car is obviously, you know, they get really hot
- 16:02for me, like my heart rate tends to get really high.
- 16:05So I've been trying to work on my cardio, just upper body
- 16:07strength. But it's really a full workout
- 16:09when you're in the race car and you know, you still have to be
- 16:11able to react fast and you know, it's hot and your heart rates up
- 16:15and you have people just, you know, still be able to function
- 16:19and race at 1000%. So for me, I race, I'm sorry.
- 16:23I mean, I train like about five days a week and like then we go
- 16:28racing. So definitely a very hectic
- 16:31schedule. Yeah.
- 16:33And and that Toyota facility is that still it was that Salisbury
- 16:38where is the Toyota facility? Yeah.
- 16:40So there's a facility with like the simulator and like the
- 16:43engineers and stuff that's in Salisbury.
- 16:45And then in Morrisville they have like the facility for the
- 16:48drivers to go in and out of and train.
- 16:50And they have like our nutritionist there, you know,
- 16:54kind of like a mental health person, PT and like our training
- 16:58facility. So we basically have it all
- 17:00there for us. It's a really great place.
- 17:01And yeah, it's definitely kind of where I spend majority of my
- 17:05week at. You brought it up just now and
- 17:08I'm going to touch on it. Years ago I took sports therapy
- 17:13in Topeka, KS and at first I thought, oh, I'm a weirdo.
- 17:17But then they said, no, no, you know, the great baseball
- 17:21pitchers, the great, you know, football quarterbacks, great
- 17:24athletes, whether it's Denny Hamlin or anybody out there in
- 17:28NASCAR, William Byron, everybody is learning to work with sports
- 17:35therapists. Not, not, doesn't mean you're
- 17:37cuckoo. Just means you got to learn how
- 17:40to be tough. You got to have thick skin with
- 17:43data and telemetry nowadays. All these engineers, they're
- 17:47telling you what you're doing wrong.
- 17:50So what do you do to stay strong mentally?
- 17:55I mean, you're you're a lady. You're against all odds.
- 17:58These guys are out there. They don't want you to outrun
- 18:00them. Tony, what do you do to stay
- 18:03mentally strong? Yeah, I think there's definitely
- 18:05still like a stigma on like, seeing a therapist and mental
- 18:08health. But, you know, I think it's so
- 18:09important for everybody. And I think, you know, even if
- 18:12you're not an athlete, there's so much to benefit from.
- 18:14And, you know, I found it's helped a lot with my inner
- 18:16confidence and self esteem. So, I mean, I feel like, you
- 18:20know, racing is a hard sport and your odds of winning are very
- 18:23slim and it's very humbling for the most part.
- 18:25So, you know, sometimes you kind of have some self doubt and
- 18:27especially, you know, people are kind of like hating on you on
- 18:30social media and like you read some comments.
- 18:32It's easy to kind of let that all creep in.
- 18:34So for me, I feel like it's made a huge difference on just my
- 18:36self-confidence and I feel like it's really also showed on the
- 18:39track. Yeah, good point.
- 18:42You said all the right stuff because I was kind of the
- 18:45innovator in NASCAR with social media.
- 18:48I learned how to use it and it it got me to where I needed to
- 18:52get to with sponsorships. So yes, you, you said all the
- 18:55right stuff. You can't.
- 18:57It can creep in on you when the jealous people, you know, just
- 19:00oh, you're nothing but a good looking girl.
- 19:02So I agree with you. But listen, the men need it too.
- 19:07The men need it too. So well, I've roughed you up
- 19:09enough about racing. We talked about, you know, where
- 19:12you come from, how you got going, ARCA training, what you
- 19:16do. Let's have a little fun now.
- 19:18Perfect. I saw that you were on the Ellen
- 19:23DeGeneres Show in what, 2001? That what is that like going on
- 19:30such a famous show? And there she is, somebody world
- 19:33famous. Tell me about your experience
- 19:36with with The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in 2001.
- 19:40Yeah. So I actually went on would have
- 19:42been like, I think 2021, I think you were missing a two in there
- 19:45because it was right after my Aurka debut at Daytona.
- 19:50So yeah, I went on right after that and it was really cool.
- 19:54And I made that debut for me. I was just, you know, out there
- 19:57racing and then it got picked up a lot.
- 19:59And when I got out of the car after the race, my manager was
- 20:03like, hey, Ellen wants you on her show.
- 20:04And I was like, oh, really? OK, cool.
- 20:07But very surreal moment for me. And yeah, something I'm always
- 20:11going to look back on and be like, that was pretty sick that
- 20:13I did that. Where was that in New York?
- 20:16So it was out of LA, but it was actually during COVID, so I
- 20:20wasn't actually able to go into like, the studio in person.
- 20:22It was all through remote. But they sent me like this
- 20:25laptop and all this like camera equipment and lighting and all
- 20:28this stuff to get it all set up and make it look super
- 20:30professional still. But yeah, I was kind of bummed
- 20:33that I couldn't like see her in person, but it was a really cool
- 20:35experience. What, what a, what a great
- 20:37memory. And, and yeah, COVID was a, was
- 20:40a, a wild time in our lives, something we'll never forget.
- 20:45So I saw you driving the number one truck and it said Victoria's
- 20:51Secret on it. I mean, what an honor.
- 20:55As I remind all the ladies when I have a conversation with him,
- 20:59I'm a girl dad. You know, I have Brooke, Brandy
- 21:03and Brittany. They're 323436.
- 21:07And of course, my wife Kim. Tell me about how did you get
- 21:12hooked up with Victoria's Secret?
- 21:14Obviously you deserve to be a Victoria's Secret model, that's
- 21:18for sure. Tell me about this experience.
- 21:21Yeah, so that was another big dream come true for me.
- 21:25It's still kind of crazy when I say it out loud, but yeah, when
- 21:28I was younger, I wanted to be a race car driver but also a
- 21:31Victoria's Secret model, which I feel like many young girls
- 21:34wanted to be. But yeah, it's something that I
- 21:36told myself I was like, I'm going to be a Victoria's Secret
- 21:38model one day and I'm going to be a race car driver and.
- 21:42I love. This that sounds very far
- 21:44fetched. I love it.
- 21:45I love. It.
- 21:46And a lot of people told me they're like, oh, you can't
- 21:49really do both. I'm like, why not?
- 21:51Like, you know, why can't I? So I never really, you know, it
- 21:55was always kind of like, in the back of my mind.
- 21:57And I ended up meeting the casting director in New York.
- 22:02I guess it would have been a couple years ago now and just
- 22:06like a quick coffee and a few weeks later they called me and
- 22:08said, hey, we have a campaign for you.
- 22:10So I raced Talladega in 2022 and right after I flew out to go
- 22:14shoot for Victoria's Secret. So it was kind of like one of
- 22:17the best weekends of my life. And then being able to have them
- 22:20on the truck and for them to really get behind my racing
- 22:23career was a very big dream come true because I've always dreamed
- 22:26of being in the Truck Series. Plus, to have Victoria's Secret
- 22:28on the truck was insane. So very surreal.
- 22:32Coney Brydinger, look at you go. You are you are tearing it up.
- 22:36Don't let nobody stop your tornado, baby.
