- 2:05Speaker 2: I don't get you for it.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I'm afraid that's what's happened to Foreman last night.
- 2:09Speaker 2: He disappeared. I'm on my way.

- 2:50Speaker 2: Expense account submitted by a special investigator Johnny Dollar to
- 2:53Speaker 2: the home office Shorty Mutual Limited, Hartford, Connecticut, following his
- 2:57Speaker 2: account of expenses incurred during my investigation of the Blink
- 3:05Speaker 2: expense account hat of one hundred and seventy eight dollars
- 3:08Speaker 2: fifty transportation and incidentals to San Francisco. On the flight out,
- 3:12Speaker 2: I studied the dope Fred Wills at Sampei. Andrew Foreman
- 3:15Speaker 2: aged fifty one occupation importer health good judging from the
- 3:20Speaker 2: hefty premium he had to pay, His importing business must
- 3:23Speaker 2: be okay. Wife Marsha Foreman aged thirty five, sixteen years
- 3:28Speaker 2: younger than her husband, and marsha was the sole beneficiary.
- 3:35Speaker 2: My plane landed about eight in the morning. An hour
- 3:37Speaker 2: later I was at the Farman's apartment. It was spacious, modern,
- 3:41Speaker 2: with a lot of glass and the kind of view
- 3:42Speaker 2: of the bay that you had to pay plenty for. Yeah,
- 3:45Speaker 2: there was money written all over the place, and marsha
- 3:47Speaker 2: Foreman looked right at home.
- 3:49Speaker 6: I'm just having coffee on the terrace, Mitter Dollar, won't
- 3:52Speaker 6: you join me?
- 3:52Speaker 2: Oh? Thanks, I could use some out here. You sure
- 3:58Speaker 2: got a beautiful view here.
- 3:59Speaker 6: Yes, I never get tired of watching the bay and
- 4:03Speaker 6: the ships. There's always something going on. Well here you are, thanks.
- 4:09Speaker 6: What is it, mister Dollar? Oh I'm just looking at
- 4:12Speaker 6: the bay Alcatraz. Yeah, such a grim looking place.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Ah. It's a real exclusive club. But I managed to
- 4:21Speaker 2: get a couple of no members into it.
- 4:23Speaker 6: I don't think I care for the kind of job
- 4:24Speaker 6: you have, mister dollar. Trouble wherever you go.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Suppose we talk about your troubles, all right?
- 4:31Speaker 6: I told the police all I know when I filled
- 4:32Speaker 6: out the missing person's report. But i'll go over it
- 4:36Speaker 6: again for.
- 4:36Speaker 2: You, if you don't mind. Your husband disappeared the night
- 4:39Speaker 2: before last.
- 4:39Speaker 6: Yes, that's right. What time, I'm I'm not sure. Around
- 4:44Speaker 6: nine o'clock that night. Somebody came to see him, a
- 4:48Speaker 6: strange sort of man.
- 4:49Speaker 2: How do you mean strange?
- 4:51Speaker 6: Well, he was dressed in rough clothes, a seaman's jacket.
- 4:55Speaker 6: He said he was an old friend of my husband's.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Did he give you his name, missus foreman? Only blinker Blinker?
- 5:02Speaker 6: Yes, he said that's what everybody called him. I guess
- 5:05Speaker 6: because he kept blinking his eyes very rapidly.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I see.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Well.
- 5:08Speaker 6: I showed this this blinker person into the den where
- 5:12Speaker 6: my husband was, and left the two of them together.
- 5:14Speaker 6: A few minutes later, my husband came out and told
- 5:17Speaker 6: me he was going to drive Blinker down town and
- 5:19Speaker 6: find him a hotel room. So I went to bed.
- 5:22Speaker 6: I was tired and went right to sleep. And well,
- 5:25Speaker 6: my husband and I have adjoining bedrooms. When I went
- 5:28Speaker 6: in to call him yesterday morning, he was gone the bed.
- 5:32Speaker 6: It hadn't been slept in. I called his office, thinking
- 5:35Speaker 6: he might have decided to work late, but they hadn't
- 5:37Speaker 6: seen him. Then you call the police, Yes, missus Foreman.
- 5:42Speaker 6: Had your husband ever mentioned this man Blinker before? No,
- 5:46Speaker 6: I am quite certain he hadn't. Can you describe him well?
- 5:50Speaker 6: He He wasn't above medium height, age, oh maybe in
- 5:55Speaker 6: the forties, a scar on his right cheek, a thin nose,
- 5:58Speaker 6: and dark rother beady eye. I'm afraid that's the best
- 6:01Speaker 6: I can do.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Well, considering that you only get a brief look at him,
- 6:04Speaker 2: I'd say that was a pretty complete description.
- 6:06Speaker 6: Mister Dollar. Do you think this person Blinker could have
- 6:09Speaker 6: done anything to my husband?
- 6:10Speaker 2: I don't know, but I'm sure the police are looking
- 6:13Speaker 2: for him. Just one more question, missus Foreman. Suppose Blinker
- 6:18Speaker 2: had nothing to do with your husband's disappearance.
- 6:22Speaker 6: I'm afraid I don't follow you.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Oh well, what I mean is, can you think of
- 6:27Speaker 2: any reason, any reason at all, why your husband might
- 6:30Speaker 2: want to disappear?
- 6:32Speaker 6: No, mister Dollar, absolutely not.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Masha Foreman sounded pretty certain of that last answer. Maybe
- 6:45Speaker 2: just a little bit too certain expense account had him
- 6:48Speaker 2: to a dolerated care fater to the office of an
- 6:50Speaker 2: old friend of mine, Detective Lieutenant Scappella. John If Foreman
- 6:54Speaker 2: took this character Blinker to a hotel, it's no hotel
- 6:57Speaker 2: we ever heard of. We've covered them all.
- 6:59Speaker 7: You think think I could have killed Foreman's possibility? What's
- 7:03Speaker 7: another Maybe there is no Blinker? Yeah, Skippella, I thought
- 7:07Speaker 7: about that too, Jonnal.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Didn't hit you.
- 7:10Speaker 7: There was something strange about missus Foreman's story.
- 7:12Speaker 2: She said. She let Blinker in the apartment, she showed
- 7:15Speaker 2: him to the den. Now she could have only seen
- 7:17Speaker 2: him a couple of minutes, Yet she rattled off a
- 7:20Speaker 2: complete description. Surehth to me, Skippella, right between the eyes
- 7:25Speaker 2: and the way she described Yeah, I.
- 7:26Speaker 7: Know semen's jacket, beady, blinking eyes, scar on the right cheek,
- 7:32Speaker 7: or he sounds real distinctive, real distinctive or real fake
- 7:37Speaker 7: trouble is smelling of Fake's one thing? Proving it's another.
- 7:41Speaker 7: What do we got for a motive.
- 7:42Speaker 2: For one thing? Fifty thousand bucks? She was form and
- 7:45Speaker 2: soul beneficiary. It's interesting, that's real interesting. Excuse me, gentlemen. Schappella,
- 7:55Speaker 2: Oh oh, yes, what I see? Yes, okay, yes, yes,
- 8:11Speaker 2: all right, thanks mister Ronald Johna.
- 8:13Speaker 7: Looks like we've got to back up and start all
- 8:15Speaker 7: What do you mean that was Wayne Arnold, that's Foreman's attorney.
- 8:18Speaker 7: You had a telephone call this morning from no but
- 8:21Speaker 7: from somebody just as interesting.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Blinker. Yeah, Blinker, Act.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Two of yours, truly Johnny Dollar in a moment, and
- 8:46Speaker 5: now Act two of yours, truly Johnny Dollar, and the
- 8:48Speaker 5: Blinker matters.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Like Schappella said, we had to back up and start
- 8:54Speaker 2: all over again. Just when we talked ourselves into thinking
- 8:57Speaker 2: Marsha Foreman's story about Blinker was funny or missing, husband's
- 9:00Speaker 2: lawyer phoned and told us he just heard from Blinker.
- 9:03Speaker 2: It had him three a dollars seventy care for head
- 9:04Speaker 2: to the office of Wayne Arnold, Foreman's attorney. I met
- 9:08Speaker 2: him just coming out his door. Did you wish to
- 9:11Speaker 2: see me, mister Arnold. Yes, I'm Johnny Dollar.
- 9:14Speaker 7: Oh yes, the insurance investigator, missus Foreman told me you'd
- 9:18Speaker 7: been questioning her. Look, I'm sorry, but I'm in rather
- 9:20Speaker 7: a hurry. I have an appointment and I'm late.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Sorry, but this will only take a minute or two.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I was in Lieutenant's Capella's office when you phoned a
- 9:26Speaker 2: while ago about this man Blinker. Mister Arnold, Oh yes,
- 9:29Speaker 2: what did you hear from him? Just a little while ago.
- 9:31Speaker 7: I called Marsha Foreman right away, and she thought I
- 9:33Speaker 7: ought to calls Capella. What did Blinker say on the phone.
- 9:36Speaker 7: It's a strange conversation. Sounded nervous, excited, almost out of breadth.
- 9:41Speaker 7: Said he wanted money, ten thousand dollars. If he didn't
- 9:44Speaker 7: get it, he'd and that's as far as he got.
- 9:47Speaker 7: He stopped suddenly, said he'd contact me later, then hung up.
- 9:51Speaker 7: What do you make of it, mister Dollar, I don't know.
- 9:54Speaker 7: Could be he's holding Foreman for ransom. That's what it
- 9:57Speaker 7: sounded like to me.
- 9:58Speaker 2: I take it you don't know that splinker.
- 10:01Speaker 7: I never heard of him until Marsha told me about
- 10:03Speaker 7: him showing up night before less.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Okay, just one more thing, mister Arnold. How long have
- 10:08Speaker 2: you been Foreman's attorney? Three four years? Why any reason
- 10:14Speaker 2: you know of why he might want to disappear? None
- 10:17Speaker 2: that I can think of. Another woman, Maybe I got
- 10:19Speaker 2: it very much about his importing business. As far as
- 10:22Speaker 2: I know, it's an excellent shape. Okay, thanks, mister Ronold.
- 10:27Speaker 7: Mister Donah, this man blinker, why would he have it
- 10:32Speaker 7: in for Andrew Foreman?
- 10:35Speaker 2: Good question. I don't Sorry, I don't have an answer
- 10:38Speaker 2: to it. I went down the elevator and outside. I
- 10:45Speaker 2: stopped at the corner to get some cigarettes. And that
- 10:47Speaker 2: was my first lucky break, because just as I was
- 10:49Speaker 2: leaving the counter, I saw Arnold come outside, and the
- 10:52Speaker 2: way he looked up and down the street made a plane.
- 10:54Speaker 2: He wanted to see if anybody was watching him. He
- 10:56Speaker 2: got into his car and drove off. I grabbed a taxi.
- 10:58Speaker 2: That's sign I'm for and trailing. He drove into Golden
- 11:01Speaker 2: Gate Park and stopped. I got out down the road
- 11:04Speaker 2: and worked my way toward him behind some bushes. Pretty
- 11:07Speaker 2: soon a woman came over and got into his car.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I couldn't hear what they were saying, but I didn't
- 11:11Speaker 2: need to because when I saw the kiss, I got
- 11:14Speaker 2: the message. The woman was Marsha Foreman. I went back
- 11:19Speaker 2: into town and waited for Marsha outside her apartment door.
- 11:22Speaker 2: She showed up about half an hour LATERY.
- 11:26Speaker 6: What why, mister dollar? What is it is? Something wrong.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Yeah, something's real wrong, missus Foreman. I want to talk
- 11:33Speaker 2: to you.
- 11:33Speaker 6: All right, come in, but I've already told you all.
- 11:41Speaker 2: I know the story you told me about this man Blinke.
- 11:44Speaker 2: There's no such person as there. What you and Nold
- 11:47Speaker 2: made it up?
- 11:48Speaker 6: I know that's not true.
- 11:49Speaker 2: What about you and Arnold, missus Foreman.
- 11:53Speaker 6: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Well, then tell me. Did you enjoy your visit with
- 11:56Speaker 2: him in Golden Gate Park an hour ago?
- 11:59Speaker 6: Oh?
- 12:00Speaker 8: That?
- 12:01Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 12:03Speaker 6: Well all right, mister Dollar. Wayne Arnold and I have
- 12:07Speaker 6: we been in love for some time?
- 12:08Speaker 2: Did your husband know?
- 12:10Speaker 6: I'm not sure you were trying to find the right
- 12:12Speaker 6: time to tell him. I don't think he'd really have
- 12:14Speaker 6: cared very much. My husband and I haven't gotten along
- 12:18Speaker 6: very well the last year or two. I guess I
- 12:20Speaker 6: really didn't know him when I married him. Mister Dollar,
- 12:24Speaker 6: this has nothing to do with my husband's disappearance. You
- 12:26Speaker 6: must believe that.
- 12:27Speaker 2: That's all.
- 12:28Speaker 6: I didn't make up the story about Blinker. I didn't
- 12:30Speaker 6: kill my husband. If that's what you're thinking.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Has he been killed?
- 12:34Speaker 6: I don't know. You you got me confused if.
- 12:37Speaker 2: You didn't do it. How about Arnold.
- 12:38Speaker 6: No, he'd have no reason, said he wasn't even in
- 12:41Speaker 6: town the night before life.
- 12:42Speaker 2: I can check that, I know you can, Missus Foreman.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Maybe you're telling me the truth and maybe you're not.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Sooner or later, I'm going to find out which.
- 12:51Speaker 6: I am telling you the truth?
- 12:54Speaker 2: And can you give me any reason at all why
- 12:56Speaker 2: your husband has disappeared.
- 12:59Speaker 6: There's there's one possibility, mister Dollar. It might have something
- 13:04Speaker 6: to do with his importing business.
- 13:05Speaker 2: What's that mean?
- 13:06Speaker 6: My husband? Well, he seems to have made a lot
- 13:09Speaker 6: of money out of his importing business, more than the
- 13:12Speaker 6: kind of thing he usually imports with Warren.
- 13:15Speaker 2: What does he import?
- 13:16Speaker 4: So?
- 13:16Speaker 6: Drinkets, curios from the Orient? Mostly?
- 13:20Speaker 2: Have you a key to your husband's office? Yes, let
- 13:22Speaker 2: me have it. I want to take a look around.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I went over the papers in Foreman's office and found
- 13:29Speaker 2: out his last ship and had come in three days
- 13:30Speaker 2: ago on the Indian Princess. Missus Foreman had said Blinker
- 13:34Speaker 2: was wearing a seaman's jacket. I had it for the waterfront,
- 13:37Speaker 2: but the ship was gone. The other pier was a
- 13:39Speaker 2: beat up eating place called Gus's Cafe. A woman with
- 13:42Speaker 2: an apron came over. She was about six feet tall
- 13:45Speaker 2: and almost that.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Why what can I do for you, Betty?
- 13:48Speaker 2: I want to talk to the owner.
- 13:49Speaker 8: Gus, that's me, your Gus short Forgutsie.
- 13:53Speaker 4: What's on your mind?
- 13:53Speaker 3: Betty?
- 13:54Speaker 2: Johnny Johnny Dollar? I want some information?
- 13:56Speaker 4: You a cop, Betty?
- 13:57Speaker 2: No, I'm not a cop. You look like I can
- 14:00Speaker 2: listen that freighter that shoved off from this pier, the
- 14:02Speaker 2: Indian Princess.
- 14:03Speaker 4: That's their regular.
- 14:04Speaker 2: You know any of the sailors from her?
- 14:06Speaker 4: About all of them? They all come in here.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Look, Gussie got okay, Gus, you ever happen to hear
- 14:11Speaker 2: of a sailor named blinker Sure? You know him? Sure
- 14:16Speaker 2: about medium height, scar on the right cheek, blinks his
- 14:19Speaker 2: eyes all the time.
- 14:20Speaker 4: I said, I know him. What do you want?
- 14:22Speaker 8: Nappa?
- 14:23Speaker 4: David?
- 14:23Speaker 2: Oh, Gussie, are the most beautiful thing that's happened to
- 14:25Speaker 2: me all day?
- 14:26Speaker 8: That's what they all tell me, Buddy Lattery, don't get
- 14:29Speaker 8: him A thing might help you though.
- 14:32Speaker 4: You're kind of cute.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Uh yeah, Look, did Blinkers sail on the idiot princess?
- 14:37Speaker 4: No?
- 14:37Speaker 2: Then where is he? The act is?
- 14:40Speaker 4: I don't know. Blinkers disappeared.
- 14:47Speaker 5: Act three of yours truly Johnny Dollar in a moment,
- 14:51Speaker 5: now act three of yours, truly Johnny Dollar, and the
- 14:54Speaker 5: Blinker matter.
- 14:59Speaker 2: And you don't have any idea where Blinker is now, Gus.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Not the slightest buddy.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Oh great, and I'm right back where I started from him.
- 15:06Speaker 8: Blinker was mixed up in something, all right, what do
- 15:08Speaker 8: you mean the Indian Princess.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Dotty the other night? Blinker come in here for a
- 15:12Speaker 4: cup of coffee.
- 15:13Speaker 8: That's one thing the sailors around here all miss when
- 15:15Speaker 8: they're around, to see my coffee.
- 15:18Speaker 4: If no one makes coffee like me, why there's nobody
- 15:21Speaker 4: on the hole.
- 15:21Speaker 2: H Yeah, I know about Blinker now.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Well, seemed pretty pleased with his self. Said he was
- 15:27Speaker 4: onto something good.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Did he say what he meant by that?
- 15:29Speaker 4: No, set there looking pleased with hisself. Oh yeah. He
- 15:33Speaker 4: showed me the elephants that it was gonna make him
- 15:35Speaker 4: a lot of money.
- 15:36Speaker 2: What elephants?
- 15:37Speaker 4: He had a carved elephant about six inches high. Mu's
- 15:40Speaker 4: have picked it up somewhere. Maybe he was gonna sell it.
- 15:42Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Hmmm. Foreman imported curios from the Orients. His last shipment
- 15:47Speaker 2: came in on the Indian princess. That elephant could have
- 15:50Speaker 2: been part of it.
- 15:51Speaker 4: Foreman, who's he?
- 15:53Speaker 2: And never mind? Well, I wonder where I go from here.
- 15:58Speaker 8: I wonder what I'm gonna do with all blinker stuff
- 16:00Speaker 8: if you don't show up?
- 16:01Speaker 2: Or maybe I was what did you say about Blinker's stuff?
- 16:05Speaker 2: What stuff?
- 16:06Speaker 8: I got a back room where I let the boys
- 16:08Speaker 8: keep their gear when they're.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Sure you've got Blinkers things there? Now, why didn't you
- 16:12Speaker 2: tell me?
- 16:13Speaker 4: You never asked me.
- 16:19Speaker 2: In the back room, I went through a Blinker's sea bag.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Near the bottom, I found the carved elephants. An ordinary
- 16:24Speaker 2: looking elephant until I twisted one of the legs loose.
- 16:27Speaker 2: It was hollow and inside a little paper packet full
- 16:31Speaker 2: of white powder. Suddenly the whole deal slid into place.
- 16:34Speaker 2: And just as suddenly, the whole deal made me slightly sick.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Now I wanted to see the rest of those elephants
- 16:39Speaker 2: real bad. According to the records Informant's office, the shipment
- 16:42Speaker 2: was in a warehouse. I went outside over to the pier. Johnny,
- 16:49Speaker 2: wh oh cuss, Come here a minute, Johnny. Look look,
- 16:52Speaker 2: I'm in a hurry. Thanks for everything. I'll see you later.
- 16:54Speaker 4: You've got time to see this over here near the pier.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Wait a minute, yep, the body all right.
- 17:03Speaker 8: One of the boys just fished it out of the
- 17:05Speaker 8: water and sent him to call the cops.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Looks like I'd spent in the water quite a few hours.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Guess yep, blinker all right. I knew I had to
- 17:19Speaker 2: work for us now. I headed out on the pier
- 17:21Speaker 2: of the warehouse. Once I thought I heard footsteps somewhere
- 17:24Speaker 2: behind me. I stopped and listened.
- 17:27Speaker 9: There was no sound.
- 17:35Speaker 2: It was dark inside the warehouse. With the help of matches,
- 17:37Speaker 2: I located for him and shippment. I took a crowbar
- 17:40Speaker 2: and open one of the crates. It was full of
- 17:42Speaker 2: carb elephants. I picked up one of them, yeah, and
- 17:46Speaker 2: had a hollow leg, And the hollow leg was full
- 17:49Speaker 2: of the same white powder. I hit the floor fast.
- 17:54Speaker 2: The shot had come from open near the door. I
- 17:56Speaker 2: eased my gun out and waited. Five minutes. Ten minutes
- 18:00Speaker 2: went by. I kept quiet. Then suddenly a shadow loomed
- 18:06Speaker 2: up near the crates. We saw each other at the

- 18:21Speaker 2: Andrew Foreman look and I found out what you were

- 18:28Speaker 2: Sure, you probably told him you'd pay off. That's when
- 18:32Speaker 2: you drove him downtown night before last. Then you tried
- 18:35Speaker 2: to kill him, but he must have got away. Called
- 18:37Speaker 2: your lawyer. Tried to put the squeeze on through him,
- 18:39Speaker 2: but he had to hang up in a hurry. You
- 18:41Speaker 2: were probably getting close. You finally caught up with him,
- 18:44Speaker 2: didn't you, Foreman. Look, you've got no proof of anything.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Why should Blinker tried to blackmail meet? Like I say,
- 18:50Speaker 2: he found out about the narcotics and those hollow elephants.
- 18:52Speaker 2: It was put there without my knowledge. You have no
- 18:54Speaker 2: proof I was involved, you know, Foreman, it doesn't much matter.
- 19:01Speaker 2: You've got even bigger troubles than that. Staring in the face.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I don't understand Blinker's body has been recovered from the
- 19:08Speaker 2: pay I wouldn't know anything about that. You got no
- 19:13Speaker 2: proof of that either. Uh. There were two bullet holes
- 19:16Speaker 2: in Blinker. Five will get your ten The slugs and
- 19:18Speaker 2: him came for this gun of yours. The gun. Yeah,
- 19:21Speaker 2: this is something that can be proved. Well, yeah, all right,

- 23:45Speaker 5: You're listening to the great detectives of Old time.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Radio welcome back. Well, a very good mystery, particularly given
- 23:59Speaker 1: the twenty one minute time frame with a lot of
- 24:03Speaker 1: twist worked into a short amount of time. Definitely a
- 24:09Speaker 1: very solidly constructed mystery. And you could tell that it
- 24:13Speaker 1: wasn't Johnstone who wrote this one. Johnstone tends to specialize
