  For people listening, the sources give this surprisingly

  practical idea. Just the act of praying for
• 2:43
  seminaries. It actually clarifies things for
• 2:46
  you, kind of forces you to think about your own view of ministry.

  Can't really pray without a goal, right?
• 2:52
  And figure out what you're praying for in faculty.
• 2:54
  Well, that naturally makes you define what you value in a
• 2:57
  pastor overall. Exactly.
• 2:58
  And connecting that to the bigger picture, praying like
• 3:01
  this isn't just, you know, a good spiritual thing to do, It's
• 3:03
  an active process. It helps you build your own sort
• 3:06
  of basic pastoral theology, your own philosophy of theological
• 3:10
  education. It pushes you to think
• 3:12
  personally about what kind of pastors you want to see coming

  out of these places and what kind of person, what kind of
• 3:17
  teaching actually grows those qualities and moves it from just
• 3:21
  abstract ideas to like, concrete hopes for the next generation of

  church leaders. If you pray for humility and
• 3:27
  students, for example, you start thinking about how that should
• 3:30
  look in your own church leaders, too.

  OK, so Piper's specific prayers or petitions.

  The sources group them into three main categories, and they

  all seem to fall under one big overarching goal that students

  would come to admire God's glory with white hot intensity.

  That's that's strong language, Not just appreciation, but this

  Yeah, white hot intensity. It paints a picture of a heart

  completely captivated by God's majesty, doesn't it?

  So the first group of these petitions works towards

  cultivating a real sense of human insufficiency, a humility.

  And this is grounded right in scripture, like 15.5.

  Apart from me, you can do nothing.

  Or understanding that God's great strength is shown through

  our weakness, like in 2nd Corinthians 4.7.

  The point isn't to downplay gifts, but to make sure they're
• 4:20
  seen in the right perspective under God's power.

  And the prayers in this first group, they asked that the real
• 4:26
  struggles of ministry, the things that feel overwhelming,

  that they'd lead students to genuinely ask, deep down, who is
• 4:31
  sufficient for. These things.

  Not in despair, but in recognizing dependence.

  And it also asked that. Every.

  Course, every single one would point to the Holy Spirit's

  essential role in making ministry fruitful, more so than

  any specific method or technique.

  Teachers should be building this attitude in students where they

  see any accomplishment that's coming through the grace of God
• 4:50
  or what crisis accomplished through me.

  That's quite different from focusing on, say, personal
• 4:55
  charisma or. Clever strategies has the main
• 4:57
  thing. Absolutely.

  And this group of prayers also calls for everyone, faculty,

  administration, students, to actively show poverty of spirit,
• 5:07
  lowliness and meekness that aren't just nice ideas, they're
• 5:10
  meant to be lived out daily, showing reliance on God.

  And it really stresses the huge need for future pastors to pray
• 5:17
  constantly without ceasing. This isn't just a habit.

  It's admitting that without ongoing, earnest prayer and
• 5:22
  relying on God's mercy, real spiritual success in ministry
• 5:25
  just isn't possible. It's knowing that their own
• 5:28
  strength, their smarts, their plans, they're just not enough
• 5:31
  for the spiritual work ahead. OK.

  So that's the first group focused on humility and
• 5:35
  dependence. What's the second group of
• 5:37
  petitions about? The second group centers on
• 5:40
  fostering a deep passion for Christ's all sufficiency, and
• 5:43
  alongside that, a real zeal for the unchanging truths of the
• 5:46
  faith. So it means always prioritizing,
• 5:49
  as Philippians 3 puts it, the surpassing worth of knowing
• 5:52
  Christ Jesus my Lord, Putting that above, you know, the latest
• 5:55
  ministry trends or whatever seems popular at the moment.

  It's about keeping Christ absolutely central, not just one
• 6:01
  resource among many. And within that, what specific
• 6:05
  things are prayed for? Well, the prayers aim to help
• 6:07
  students really grasp, like in their hearts, how precious God's
• 6:10
  mercy is. Mercy we get even though we
• 6:13
  deserve judgement. The goal is for future pastors
• 6:16
  to resonate with John Newton's famous dying words.
• 6:19
  My memory is nearly gone, but I remember two things, that I am a
• 6:22
  great Sinner and that Jesus is a great Savior.
• 6:25
  That kind of simple, core truth should anchor everything they
• 6:28
  do. The prayers also ask for a
• 6:30
  joyful delight in biblical truth itself and for teachers to teach
• 6:34
  in a certain way. Piper puts it like this.

  No man can give the impression that he himself is clever and
• 6:39
  that Christ is mighty. To save meaning.

  The focus is always on Christ as the hero, the answer, the
• 6:45
  wisdom, not on how smart or eloquent the teacher is.

  The teacher should be like a clear window to Christ, not

  drawing attention to themselves. A clear window, not a stained

  glass one. I like that.

  OK, so humility, independence first, then passion for Christ

  and truth. What's the third group?

  The third group is all about fostering a strong allegiance to

  all of Scripture and to its careful, faithful exposition.

  This means pushing back against any tendency to sort of shrink
• 7:09
  down what parts of the Bible are considered useful for preaching

  or for life. It's about taking the whole
• 7:15
  counsel of God seriously, not just picking the parts that feel
• 7:18
  easy or immediately relevant. So embracing the whole thing,
• 7:22
  not just bits and pieces. Exactly.

  And that includes developing respect for both the the awful
• 7:28
  warnings of Scripture, the parts about judgment, and the need for
• 7:31
  repentance. And it's amazing promises of
• 7:33
  grace. It's seeing both as vital.

  It also involves the conviction that pursuing holiness isn't
• 7:39
  just about willpower. It's empowered by God himself.
• 7:42
  And it stresses that regular, deep study of Bible is the best
• 7:45
  way, the most reliable way, to gain wisdom for helping people
• 7:48
  with their real life problems. These petitions also directly
• 7:51
  challenge some views out there that see the Bible as having
• 7:54
  only minimal unity and mostly wide-ranging diversity.

  Instead, Piper calls for pursuing the Unified Whole

  Council of God, looking for its coherence and overall message.

  Right, seeing it as one unified story.

  And related to that, the sources also say explicit biblical

  insights should just saturate every class, making sure God and

  his Word are constantly being admired and discussed, not just,

  you know, assumed in the background.

  And to make sure all these goals actually happen, the petitions

  also pray for wisdom and courage for the leaders, the faculty

  Dean's presidents, wisdom to make hiring decisions and

  strategic choices that actually push these goals forward.

  And likewise, it calls for boards and leaders to be

  watchful over the faculty's moral and doctrinal faithfulness

  and to exercise discipline if needed to maintain that biblical

  faithfulness. This kind of institutional

  oversight is seen as really crucial for protecting the whole
• 9:06
  vision in the long run. So.

  When you lay it all out like that, raying for seminaries

  based on Ier's view here isn't just this general vague, bless

  them kind of prayer. It's very focused, very
• 9:17
  strategic. It's an act that's seen as
• 9:19
  directly shaping the future of the church.

  These petitions describe a really specific a high standard
• 9:26
  for the kinds of leaders who will guide churches for years to
• 9:28
  come. Yeah, this whole discussion

  really brings home how what's taught, and maybe more
• 9:33
  importantly, what's lived out in seminary classrooms is believed
• 9:36
  to flow directly into our pulpits and into the lives of
• 9:38
  church members. And ultimately, it affects the
• 9:40
  church's witness in the world. So it really prompts you, the

  listener, to think, how does this vision for training
• 9:45
  ministers shape your own thinking about cultivating
• 9:48
  solid, biblically grounded leadership in the church today?

  What specific qualities do you find yourself praying for now in

  those to teach and those preparing for ministry may be

  something to reflect on?
