- 0:00Hello and welcome to another episode of the Christian we
- 0:03podcast. Today's guest is a former
- 0:05professional basketball coach at TV, commentator content creator
- 0:08and media manager, all the way from the UK.
- 0:11I don't know why I said that I'm used to saying that when we have
- 0:13guests from far away, he's from here, where I am in the UK, his
- 0:16name's Paul Nicholson. Welcome to the show.
- 0:18How you doing? I'm good.
- 0:20Thank you. Yeah.
- 0:20All the way from down the road. Now it's like a for a supposed
- 0:24to have it. I don't know.
- 0:26I do try to have like more UK guess but it's kind of random.
- 0:31I don't really like, especially think specifically, where's from
- 0:35someone's from? I just kind of look like hey
- 0:38this person that's, you know, interesting.
- 0:40Like that's who they are, what they do.
- 0:41Yeah. Like they might want to come on
- 0:42the show and have a good conversation excetera and yeah,
- 0:46obviously, I came through, I came across you through mads,
- 0:51shout to meds, she won't listen to this but you know, now I've
- 0:53showed her out. So there's that link.
- 0:56And then I start looking at your content and I was like, I was
- 0:58intrigued. Prepare various different
- 1:01reasons. Yeah, my contents.
- 1:03A bit, all over the place. When you tie into what I
- 1:06actually do. And the weird thing is we
- 1:08literally come across each other because of a tick tock Trend.
- 1:12Yeah. It's true.
- 1:14It's true. I mean, it's nice though.
- 1:16Like I think that just just an aside like with Tick-Tock in
- 1:21general. I think it's brought people
- 1:23together in a way that maybe social media hadn't done before
- 1:27like what, hey, maybe it has bigger.
- 1:29It's a bit by bit. Is is different like it's more
- 1:31accessible. I think is the word and I need.
- 1:34Yeah, I think so. I've literally the weekend just
- 1:37gone before this, I had a friend and his family down staying at
- 1:42our house for the weekend who I met on Tick-Tock two years ago.
- 1:45Well, really crazy? Yeah, absolute crazy.
- 1:48All the way from Liverpool came down with a family stayed at our
- 1:52house. We went down into Cornwall,
- 1:55we're really good friends, and I'm going to go up to see them
- 1:59in a Weeks awesome, man. Awesome.
- 2:02Yeah, I mean, I bet a lot of my online friends through Tick-Tock
- 2:05and I owe it a lot, really. I mean, I know there's a lot of
- 2:08detractors people that have negative things to say and Lord
- 2:11knows I've said negative things as well, but I am grateful for I
- 2:15think there's a lot of pluses with and it surprised me as an
- 2:19app and that's kind of why I was on Tick-Tock.
- 2:22Originally, I went on there to kind of figure out how it works
- 2:25because of my role in media and it surprised me, I was
- 2:28expecting. Dance Crazy is and all this
- 2:31other stuff which which it does have.
- 2:33Don't get me wrong but you can find your Niche on there very
- 2:35quickly. See you when you you took over
- 2:38this social media position or its media manager position, did
- 2:43your company kind of approach you and be like, hey, so this
- 2:47Tick Tock thing like can you help us like that?
- 2:50What was that conversation? Bless them.
- 2:53They had no idea what Tick-Tock did.
- 2:58I was long We short. So, I used to be a basketball
- 3:03coach. I was a junior, basketball,
- 3:06coaches, a volunteer for 15 years as well as a full time
- 3:09job. I got lucky enough to be offered
- 3:11a position as an assistant coach for a pro team.
- 3:14Took that on covid season hit in covid season.
- 3:19We went to these separate bubbles so the assistant coaches
- 3:23weren't allowed to work with the protein to begin with.
- 3:25So, I needed to find something to do to keep myself relevant
- 3:28because the more people People that worked with a protein the
- 3:32kind of more chance that was of covid spreading and everything
- 3:37else. So I used to do a little bit of
- 3:39video and you still have a photography you to enjoy social
- 3:43media usage, a bit of design work nothing crazy just a little
- 3:46bit and I said look as its you know I'll jump on the media bit
- 3:51for a while and that that did it did what it did and it was good
- 3:56and it was fun and I explored it and then when I got approached
- 3:59by A different team, they approached me as, you know, do
- 4:02you want to be our media manager by?
- 4:04Do you want to actually go into this properly?
- 4:06Now, it's kind of like, you know what, why not.
- 4:09This is got transferable skills if basketball stops tomorrow.
- 4:14I can move into a different industry quite easily.
- 4:16And that's kind of where it started.
- 4:18I think I said, I didn't realize there was there was cross over
- 4:20there, like, I understood like free, doing my research on you
- 4:23that you do, obviously actually done that job in the context of
- 4:29your basketball career. Nearby didn't realize the other
- 4:30that level of crossover. That's yeah, no, it was fair
- 4:34about any sorry about any background noise there.
- 4:37Obviously, I'm doing this from home.
- 4:39I've got six month old, baby bless congratulations.
- 4:42Thank you, congratulations on, lack of sleep.
- 4:47Oh I'm sorry about the noise. You might have to start this day
- 4:51again. No, I so good.
- 4:53It's so good. I try to limit the amount of
- 4:55everything I do. Well, I don't know.
- 4:57I've had, I've had people criticize me.
- 4:59About before. And the way I look at it is,
- 5:02I'll edit things out that if there's like lots and lots of,
- 5:05like, I don't know problems in like internet or something.
- 5:10Or things like that. Real noise is it.
- 5:12This is, this is the real life, you know, I'm a week moth and,
- 5:17yeah, we're getting ready. Have a barbecue later,
- 5:19six-month-old baby. And it's did Is What It Is.
- 5:23Well, I like it because it's, I don't know.
- 5:25That's something I've tried to do something a little bit
- 5:27different. With my podcast is, is give like
- 5:29a discussion. A show where where you don't
- 5:31have that, you know, where it's a bit more like a just a general
- 5:34conversation that you might. Yeah, I like I like that.
- 5:37And that works that works for me and it said like going back to
- 5:41the whole social medias of the crossover was crazy.
- 5:44It was, it was insane. Going from actually achieving my
- 5:47dream job of coaching for my hometown Club in Arena at the
- 5:53top division of British basketball to.
- 5:56They're making a decision to go. Actually, I'm now Going to Media
- 6:01was a bit of a strange one for me, but I enjoyed it.
- 6:04It was a, it was, it was fun. Media's great is creative.
- 6:07It's, it's engaging. You get to have some real fun
- 6:10with that. You get your, you put yourself
- 6:11out there a little bit and you're in the public eye and
- 6:13you're open to criticism pretty easily.
- 6:16But that whole Tick-Tock thing was mad because I just we tried
- 6:21Tick Tock from the British battle against something that
- 6:23the league, try to push a couple of the teams weren't fans.
- 6:27And that's probably because there was an older generation,
- 6:29who didn't quite understand it. Hmm.
- 6:33But I kind of took it by the horns with a, with another sort
- 6:37of member of staff that we have there.
- 6:39And we loved it, it was so engaging and it was it opens
- 6:43doors to so much more than what other platforms do.
- 6:48Because if you follow me on Facebook, if you On Instagram,
- 6:51that's great but if you don't follow me on those platforms
- 6:53where you can while you're going to come across my platform, how
- 6:55are you going to come across my platform where actually Tick
- 6:58Tock, put you out there to everything, and obviously, since
- 7:01then Instagram has been pushing reels more YouTube of, in
- 7:04pushing shorts more Facebook of started doing reels.
- 7:08And everyone's gonna hold up a minute.
- 7:09Tick-Tock of done, something really good here.
- 7:12Now, everyone's joining the party, there's something to, I
- 7:15must agree. I mean, that there's plenty of
- 7:16people, I know that follow me on Tick Tock, dirt would never
- 7:20Check out, for instance, the podcast, or things like that.
- 7:22And to a certain extent, I think that, you know, you have your
- 7:26different, customer bases. If you hate them like that
- 7:29customer bases. But, you know, you got people
- 7:31that are interested in your short stuff, people that are
- 7:33interested in the more long-terms long form content.
- 7:37But if people are true and genuine fans of you that they'll
- 7:41probably end up checking out everything that you do, because
- 7:43they're intrigued and you, they're interested in you and
- 7:46that's kind of a big, a big part of this.
- 7:48And I think that, Say, there's more accessibility there,
- 7:52there's more reach there. Something that made me laugh.
- 7:55The other day when I was looking up, people giving tips on like
- 7:59how to use hashtags and stuff and they said something like, oh
- 8:02don't use the fyp hashtag because the algorithm sends it
- 8:07to the random populace and then it won't be specific to what
- 8:10you're looking for. And it's like well that makes
- 8:12sense. Like for instance, let's say you
- 8:14did a basketball related video. Yeah.
- 8:18And it would make sense to not for fyp and just put basketball
- 8:22related hashtags if that's specifically what you're going
- 8:25for. Yeah.
- 8:26Then if you do want to reach a more General audience which in
- 8:29general, you kind of do you want to reach new people who might be
- 8:32interested in this? You know whatever you're doing
- 8:35you'll want to put that says interesting to me like it's kind
- 8:37of something I've been learning at the analytics of social media
- 8:42is a complete Minefield. Hmm.
- 8:46Something that I've spent a lot of time studying this year.
- 8:51Trying to understand what social media platforms, run with what
- 8:55analytics. And I've had meetings with
- 8:56Tick-Tock and people like that to understand how why you do
- 9:01what you do, you know. And yeah, the hashtags the
- 9:05reality is a hash tag appears and you because maybe you follow
- 9:09a hashtag maybe because you watch content which has similar
- 9:12hashtags, that's how it finds you.
- 9:14So if you watch content which has hashtag fyp on it, you're
- 9:18going to find more content which Says, hashtag fyb on it if you
- 9:22follow and then that in Tick-Tock, everyone's everyone's
- 9:25a pro on Tick-Tock. Yeah, everyone, everyone's like,
- 9:28you do this many hashtags. Make sure you hold up for me
- 9:31because like, you know, there's there's rights to it and there's
- 9:34wrong to it. You know, when people were like
- 9:36tick-tocks broken, I've got no hashtags.
- 9:38No, it's not broken. You still get going before you
- 9:40page. And if someone watches your
- 9:43video is going to get pushed to more people, it's that person
- 9:46watches your view, it will get pushed to even more people.
- 9:48It's not broken. It's just, that's how the system
- 9:50works. You know, what do you make of
- 9:53when people get, like, Shadow bands and stuff like that?
- 9:56Do you think that's real? Was that I saw when I had a
- 9:58conversation with Tick-Tock, they said, shut up.
- 10:00Van is not a thing. And actually, the guy I had a
- 10:02conversation for who was the head of sports Tick?
- 10:06Tock said he's never even heard of Shadow Man.
- 10:10That's what he said to me. I understand that I've done
- 10:14videos and I've got like five six, seven videos in a row x
- 10:171000 2000, 3000 views. And then all of a sudden I get
- 10:20200 and 300 I don't believe that such as shadow man.
- 10:25I just believe that. As at that moment, when I put
- 10:28out that tick-tock Not as many people are interested in it.
- 10:32Hmm. Not as a bad tick tock, if I put
- 10:34out, 10 minutes later loads of people might like it, but Tik
- 10:38toks. One of those things, it only
- 10:39gets pushed Buy views, right? That if you put Tick, Tock out
- 10:45and someone views it It's going to go to someone else.
- 10:49If you put a tick tock out, and the first 10 people to see your
- 10:52Tick-Tock, don't view it and Skip past it.
- 10:54It's not going to get pushed out as much.
- 10:57Yeah, I saw something. I don't know if it was
- 10:59specifically for Tick-Tock or it might be in for Instagram and
- 11:01other social media app or something like that.
- 11:03But it said something like the amount.
- 11:05I think it was Facebook. Actually, the amount of time
- 11:08that you spend. Yeah.
- 11:09Watching a clip. Let's say if the clip is 30
- 11:12seconds. Yeah.
- 11:13And you spent like a second watching it then then it would
- 11:15be sort of discarded and it won't be pushed if you spent
- 11:18more than like five seconds look in there, the algorithms I go.
- 11:21Okay, you're interested in this very, why would a social media
- 11:24page want to push something? Not being watched right?
- 11:29It makes no sense to them. Is not going to make them any
- 11:32money, any business, any engagement.
- 11:34So why would they push that out there as an algorithm?
- 11:38Where if you watch, if you got a minute Tick-Tock and you watch
- 11:42it for a minute, it's going to get pushed.
- 11:45And that's why you see, people trying to look quirky Little
- 11:47Things by by adding, like different words in and making a
- 11:51story of it and get people to watch to the end.
- 11:54And that's why that Trend came out where a video cuts off after
- 11:56five. Ekans.
- 11:57Because now people have watched the whole video and all these
- 12:00different things got created because people wanted watch
- 12:03time. Yep.
- 12:04And if you watch it multiple times, it's even better.
- 12:08But even better, you know, and it's just how it works.
- 12:10It's luck of the draw. Sometimes it really is.
- 12:13Like I there's a lot of content I've been experimenting with
- 12:16recently, which some of it is inspired by other Trends.
- 12:20I've seen some of it is just random and I'm throwing stuff
- 12:22out and seeing what sticks? I'm having fun with it, which is
- 12:25the main thing. But like, yeah, for sure it is
- 12:27random but my biggest ever, most successful video that went
- 12:32viral. It's still puzzles me to this
- 12:36day that it was a stitch and I one of those go crazy here.
- 12:40Yeah, and I was just reacting to someone and I made I made like a
- 12:45silly like what kind of reaction and that got like 2.9 million
- 12:50views. So question is only watching.
- 12:52You ready watching what happened before, you know, you don't know
- 12:55but either way it works but I think it was a combination of
- 12:58the two that the the comments in the comments section they were
- 13:01people's laughing at my response.
- 13:04Nice. And there were other people
- 13:05can't because but basically what happened, I can't really say.
- 13:07The show. But he said something
- 13:10inappropriate in relation to like a name of a place.
- 13:14Yeah. And I double checked to see if
- 13:17he was being serious or mucking around and it turns out he was
- 13:20just he's a comedian. He's just having fun.
- 13:22Yeah. So I reacted to it and then that
- 13:25I think it was a yeah, from what I could see.
- 13:28The people were kind of interested in both in both parts
- 13:31and and then they comment, right?
- 13:32So, right. What happens on Tick?
- 13:34Tock washer Compton. The video is still playing in
- 13:36the background. Good boy.
- 13:38He doesn't never thought about that.
- 13:40The video doesn't stop playing it, just continues.
- 13:42So, actually now that video is getting more watches.
- 13:44This one's watch it multiple times and now it's getting
- 13:46pushed out more body algorithm. So, in a way, it's probably
- 13:50better to have shorter content then in general because there's
- 13:53more Transit. Well, me continuously, if you
- 13:56are a generic and I say, generic, I can't mean that by
- 13:59like me or you or someone who just puts out some random stuff
- 14:04then. Yeah. 100%.
- 14:06If you're a storyteller, He better make sure you stories.
- 14:09Good, if you want someone to listen to one minute, you better
- 14:11be good. And it depends on the mood of
- 14:13the people to find it, you know, because you do some music as
- 14:15well, right? I do.
- 14:16So if I'm scrolling through your page and I'm just not in the
- 14:19mood for music, I'll probably just go on actually today, I've
- 14:24quite in the mood for music so I saw your live.
- 14:25I stopped in your life. I listen to a song and it really
- 14:28depends on who sees it at what moment but I think the key three
- 14:32is is consistency. Yes.
- 14:34Make a decision of how many tick-tocks can you post a day?
- 14:37See if you can only post one add a post one.
- 14:39Add a post at the same time if you're going to post free add a
- 14:42postman the same time posting every day.
- 14:44If you can pose 20 a day, great, you've got more chance of one
- 14:47video going viral. Did you think that the timing is
- 14:50actually because I've seen that I've tried with that, like I
- 14:53looked at my analytics and it said, okay the best time to post
- 14:55is like 5 6 p.m. or whatever but I've noticed that it makes no
- 14:58difference when I post. But for two reasons, right?
- 15:02One the video rarely you know, starts getting view straight
- 15:06away. Is normally like a gap there.
- 15:09I'm going. And what I tend to do is I'll do
- 15:12a bunch of videos in the morning.
- 15:13They won't get any views for a while and then they'll suddenly
- 15:16get a ton of use later in the day and then while I'm asleep I
- 15:20assume it's been pushed to America Canada.
- 15:22Well yeah, you can look on your analytics to see where your key
- 15:26Market is. And then when you look at your
- 15:28key Market, if your key Market is America.
- 15:31Yep. You can then time your videos
- 15:34about because we know if you think of it, when do you look at
- 15:36your phone? Bobby, when you first wake up
- 15:38before you go to bed, maybe on your lunch break on the weekend,
- 15:43is a little bit more spread out, and that's when people are going
- 15:45to pick up their phones and scroll because that's when I do,
- 15:48you know, I look in the morning, I look in the evening, that's
- 15:52when I do my scroll time, I call it, you do just sit there and
- 15:54just flick through. Let's go Malik.
- 15:57What is what you need, right? So you look at, I do lies,
- 16:01right? I do, like I go live a lot.
- 16:02So I go live every morning and I'm talking like 5:00 6:00 in
- 16:05the morning because the baby's awake.
- 16:07So at the baby's awake, I'm awake.
- 16:09I take the baby downstairs. He plays.
- 16:10I jump on live a little. Yeah, so you're picking up the
- 16:13tail end of the American audience then.
- 16:15Yeah, and a beginning of us. Yeah.
- 16:18But weirdly enough, I get loads of people in my life in the
- 16:21Philippines mum. I'm absolutely loads and then
- 16:26I'll go and live at lunchtime. And instead of 200 people, which
- 16:30I had in my live in the morning, I'll get six.
- 16:33Yeah, you know, and and that's consistent that happens
- 16:36consistently I've had this I've discovered Sunday's great day.
- 16:42Always always stream on a Sunday and I was on the phone, but
- 16:46Saturday any time on a Saturday doesn't matter what time?
- 16:49Just no one. No, nobody, no one is around.
- 16:52Just don't stream on a Saturday. Everyone's out doing something.
- 16:56Everyone's busy or whatever, you know?
- 16:58Yeah, it's like, I don't tend to, I don't tend to post videos
- 17:03my videos. Get posted first thing in the
- 17:04morning before people go to work.
- 17:07Just before lunch time, but they hit the lunch break and in
- 17:10evening, maybe 1:00 in the afternoon depending on what day
- 17:14is, if it's a Sunday, definitely one in the afternoon and that's
- 17:17kind of I've just done that and actually I get into a routine so
- 17:20it makes a post a little bit easier for me, you know, and I
- 17:25think I find that helps me personally, it's a may be
- 17:28different, but it depends is so honestly 20 watching your
- 17:31content. Mmm, you know, it depends who
- 17:34watches your content, it really does.
- 17:36It mean, That's what the analytics of important.
- 17:39That's why you got to go on that settings page.
- 17:40And you got to go look at your analytics.
- 17:42And actually, if you do want to push, push your Tick-Tock in a
- 17:46serious way. Look at those analytics and go.
- 17:50Right? What makes sense from what I'm
- 17:52looking at. I changed mine recently
- 17:55actually, because I've had three accounts for a while, so I got
- 18:00the one for the podcast. Yeah, my second account.
- 18:03Have you got picked up for the podcast of you?
- 18:05I do. I do.
- 18:07And that one is because it's not, it's not, I'm still
- 18:12figuring out, I'll come back to that in a second but like I've
- 18:14got, I've got these three accounts.
- 18:15One is my main account, which is the one where I had the viral
- 18:18video. Yeah.
- 18:20And it's managed to get like 28 thousand followers or something.
- 18:25It was probably like my crowning achievement, but it's just a
- 18:28stagnated. But what I've done is, I've kind
- 18:30of transitioned it into being like, where I put my more
- 18:35serious stuff. I don't Post any I don't jump on
- 18:38any Trends I don't do anything. I just put like music video or I
- 18:42don't know acting self tapes to show my acting Journey that kind
- 18:46of stuff. Yeah.
- 18:47And now be quality over quantity, right precisely.
- 18:50Yep. But then the second account is
- 18:54just kind of, hey, just reach as many people as possible.
- 18:58Jump on all Trends, whatever. Try and keep it on brand to,
- 19:02like, to some extent, but at the same time, just go nuts and, and
- 19:05it's working a little bit, I think.
- 19:07Think it will work. It takes time.
- 19:09It really does take time but that consistency is where it's
- 19:12at. The funny thing is that bringing
- 19:14it back to the podcast like for a while.
- 19:16I was splitting the clips and I post like a couple on the main
- 19:20account. A couple on the second account
- 19:22and a couple on the podcast account and on the podcast
- 19:25account, just nothing dead. Dead in the water, just never
- 19:28never worked. And so I and I just stopped,
- 19:32posting Clips on the two accounts and I only post on the
- 19:34podcast account now. Yeah, the views are gone up.
- 19:37Considerably. And one thing I've noticed is
- 19:40that because I change the, The Fog, the hashtag, sorry.
- 19:45So I used to put a ton of hashtags loads and loads of
- 19:48hashtags. Right?
- 19:495 is 5, no more music. No more than 5 10 15 and that's
- 19:53what I've been told through Tick-Tock interesting.
- 19:58Can I just proved you more like? Is there any shocking things
- 20:01that they told you or things that we might not know nothing.
- 20:05Shocking. They said that never do any more
- 20:06than five. Two, three, four, five, fine.
- 20:09They said because it keeps a simple the computer system of
- 20:12the algorithm knows where to push it.
- 20:14Okay. You put too many just too much.
- 20:16Like, if I gave you too many words to to look at is too much,
- 20:20you don't know which one you're looking at, you know?
- 20:23You know, you make if I gave you a menu with, with 40 choices on
- 20:26it, I gave you a menu of five choices.
- 20:28I know which one you're going to, you're going to get quicker,
- 20:30right? That's, that's the one you're
- 20:31gonna pick quicker. Perfect Analogy.
- 20:34So that's kind of one of the main things.
- 20:42See that the baby doesn't like hashtags paid and that meant
- 20:45that. No, this party.
- 20:48If there's, if there's more than five hashtags, the big not happy
- 20:51about it. Yeah.
- 20:55The, the fyp was something told me about about, obviously that
- 20:58everyone gets pushed onto the fyp and then to paste on viewers
- 21:01and watch time is if it gets pushed to the next section.
- 21:05You know, you look at the fyp base as like a ladder, If so
- 21:09many people watch it, it will go to the next step of the ladder
- 21:12if so many people watch that the next shape and you will know if
- 21:16your tick tocks going to work or not, because you will just know
- 21:19in watching The Views, go up of how quickly they go up.
- 21:24You'll get a used to seeing that and go.
- 21:25Okay, this video is going to go for it.
- 21:27Look what you can do. Oh yeah, this video is going to
- 21:29be like, okay because I if you do I've got like, what fairy
- 21:335,000 followers? My Average video views is 2000.
- 21:38And percentage terms based on 45,000 is not great.
- 21:43And I think that's normal though.
- 21:45Like, Kevin is someone like, even someone like PewDiePie,
- 21:48who's got, like 100 million Subs on YouTube.
- 21:50Like, he'll only get like five ten million views per video,
- 21:54which, and that's what you gotta be prepared for you.
- 21:56Got to look at the percentage, I always sent my wife yesterday,
- 21:59she's on tick-tocks, he's trying to get into it a little bit, how
- 22:02cool she was on, she's on like four hundred followers.
- 22:05But she's gay in 250 views. And I'm like, that's over 50%
- 22:09viewer rate, that's really good followers.
- 22:11And actually that's very good. And if you look at as a
- 22:14percentage, it's kind of an indication of how well, your
- 22:18videos are going to do. But, you know, it was the
- 22:21meeting was good. It was more about because I'm,
- 22:25I'm also, in charge of trying to help someone players get
- 22:27verified and things like that. You know, what is the process
- 22:31for that? Forgetting verified for us in
- 22:33the UK? You, you put out a form.
- 22:37Obviously, you've got to get the Form to begin with.
- 22:39And that's you can only get that link and that form through
- 22:42someone from Tick, Tock, you fill the form out in that form,
- 22:46I needed to have five news articles about the person.
- 22:51So needed to be relevant news articles where you're in the
- 22:54press as you papers online, magazines, whatever.
- 22:59Where it shows your name and everything else.
- 23:01You've got add a description of why it was beneficial to you to
- 23:05be verified. And and the normal answer is to
- 23:09protect identification. So, for instance, for anyone, in
- 23:12the public figure or the public eye, they will use it as a
- 23:17protection side of things, so people can't copy their name
- 23:22because obviously if you are an actor or a musician or
- 23:25Sportsman, or anything like that, if someone makes an
- 23:28account with your name, They're not detrimental to your career,
- 23:33right? Yes, that's what enio.
- 23:35So, there's lots of things like that, which you add into it, and
- 23:36then you send it away and you just cross your fingers and hope
- 23:39for the best. Are there any other criteria
- 23:43aside from the 5:00 news articles?
- 23:44Because I find that interesting that doesn't seem like that
- 23:48much. I mean, like not it's not really
- 23:50you. Yeah, you've got a obviously,
- 23:52you've put the news articles in, you write a little piece about
- 23:55why you should be verified. And obviously the news articles,
- 23:59good have got to be credible. You know, you can't just be
- 24:02like, yeah, I was in my local Village paper the other day, and
- 24:04there's a picture of it. It won't, that won't cut it, you
- 24:07know? But it's got to be National.
- 24:09Yeah. National or at least Regional
- 24:12you know, what? If it's internet, like, let's
- 24:15say, Okay, verification process for the UK, right?
- 24:17But let's say you've been featured in newspapers in other
- 24:21countries, what I mean? Yeah, that would work.
- 24:23Yeah. But what what I mean, is
- 24:25verification for UK, is that sort of UK?
- 24:27Cause I know in America is actually a little bit more
- 24:29difficult. You've got to have, you got to
- 24:31have all that information. And you've also got to have
- 24:34like, like a reference, the such like you would do on a CD.
- 24:39Mmm, you know, so you gotta have someone who can back you up and
- 24:42say yeah this is why. So this is why I love sports
- 24:45people and would have agents and or media managers actors would
- 24:49have agents and so forth. Sabotage pretty much takes over
- 24:59my morning livestream fair. I literally, I got my morning
- 25:02lives and people are coming on to see the baby and they really
- 25:04couldn't care if I was there or not.
- 25:06Hey, fair play, man, it's true. It's like, I know people that
- 25:10have like animals as pets and then they start featured them or
- 25:15non Tick-Tock. And something of babies animals,
- 25:20whatever anything cute or innocent, sweet.
- 25:22This is why my tic tocs mental my lies feature.
- 25:25Me and my baby just having it. Hello, wife and the, you know,
- 25:31but my career is basketball, right?
- 25:34But my tic tocs are based around Funko Pops because I like
- 25:37collecting him, that's a whole different story.
- 25:39So like my I've kind of open myself up to like lots of
- 25:42different Avenues there as well. I don't actually show any
- 25:46basketball stuff. Really on my Tick Tock.
- 25:47I will do when the season starts but in the off season I don't
- 25:50tend to put anything on there. Do you think that there would be
- 25:58like it would be somewhat problematic?
- 25:59If there's like a mixture of that kind of content, it can be.
- 26:02Yeah, that's why I kind of keep the basketball stuff off it,
- 26:05right? Right.
- 26:06I used to do a bit of everything and I used to get a few
- 26:09followers and it went up gradually and so forth.
- 26:12And as soon as I went to one Niche, it was perfect because
- 26:17you got to think of how you watch Tick-Tock again, you
- 26:18scroll right, you sit there with your thumb.
- 26:20So, I'm a funk Oak. The say I'm a Funko.
- 26:23Person who collects Funko pops, and DC and Marvel and all this
- 26:26sort of stuff, right, Disney, and everything else I'm
- 26:28scrolling. And all seen, I see a basketball
- 26:30video. The first thing I can do is go
- 26:32click not interested in this content.
- 26:36And then actually, they might not even known.
- 26:37It was me posting it. They just see a video that
- 26:40they're not interested in a neighborhood, not interested in
- 26:42this content and move on. But if that's from someone that
- 26:47you follow just hypothetically. Yeah, then would that then
- 26:50affect that Creator like Would you still see videos from that
- 26:54person? Or did you see the security
- 26:55videos from them or whatever, but you just won't see as much?
- 26:58Would you just sit? If I think, when you say I'm not
- 27:01interesting that, that content, it does kind of Vanquish
- 27:05anything, similar. Mmm, but obviously, because bass
- 27:09was my job. So, I'm also running our team's
- 27:12account. I'm running some of our players
- 27:14accounts. The last thing I want to do is
- 27:15on my Tick. Tock is talk more about stuff.
- 27:17I work with, you know, to attend to.
- 27:20I tend to leave it but occasionally if I'm again I must
- 27:23take my Tick, Tock home walk around on a live show.
- 27:26People what I do, but I don't tend to make video content about
- 27:29it. I tend to talk about it and show
- 27:31it on my live rather than the videos.
- 27:34Okay, this is this is fascinating to me and that's
- 27:38because I didn't know that this conversation would go this way.
- 27:40So for me it's just like the beauty of this whole podcast.
- 27:44You just can't go anyway. Just happy to pick your brains
- 27:46about this just in general with whoop, social media has.
- 27:51There hasn't been any other things That you've discovered,
- 27:53which may be of surprised you or just are interesting as far as
- 27:57your social media. And the biggest thing for me I
- 28:00think was understanding what each different channels used
- 28:04for. So I used to, when I first
- 28:06started, I assist generic app which when I press postal
- 28:10processing photo and all my social channels of the same
- 28:13message, right? Schedule it in on all of them as
- 28:15I write. Brilliant job, done.
- 28:18And then the people on LinkedIn really didn't care what I was
- 28:21talking about on Facebook. The people aren't Folk didn't
- 28:23really care about the picture, I showed on Instagram and people
- 28:25on Tick-Tock, didn't care about any of it.
- 28:28So it was then trying to figure out actually break down the
- 28:31analytics on each one. So I used to have this crazy
- 28:33spreadsheet, I still got it which is got all of our social
- 28:36channels on and it's got how many live views likes clicks.
- 28:40This shares watch time anything written on it which I takes me
- 28:44like a good two days to go through the analytics of all our
- 28:46social sites to understand actually every sites got his own
- 28:50purpose. You see a lot on Instagram and
- 28:54Facebook on reels and you can see the tick tock Walker
- 28:57watermark in it. Guess what?
- 28:59Instagram and Facebook. Don't like that.
- 29:01Because that's not their site. So they won't push it as much.
- 29:04See, I've seen people say that and for a while I was paying
- 29:07attention to that and changing in accordance with that.
- 29:10But then I've seen some videos that have the watermark just a
- 29:13still popping off, so it doesn't seem to make a difference.
- 29:15It's probably because you're talking that about these
- 29:19big-time creators on you talking about.
- 29:21He's not necessarily know. Okay.
- 29:23Interesting. I mean because I thought I was
- 29:25the same as yours. Oh, okay.
- 29:26So they just hate watermarks and then saw Bonilla content that
- 29:30didn't sort of fit that bill and I'ma okay, that's it.
- 29:33Yeah, I don't think it looks very good if I'm honest with
- 29:36you. If you put a watermark video on
- 29:39Instagram but don't think it looks great.
- 29:41I think you've best getting a editing app like a free editing
- 29:45app like a cap cut or something like that, you know, where you
- 29:49can just edit a video and you've got it and then you can put on
- 29:52Tick-Tock, you can go put on Instagram, you can go put on
- 29:54Twitter or whatever and it all looks like it's meant for that.
- 29:58That form. But yeah the biggest thing was
- 30:01just discover him actually Facebook and maybe I'll only do
- 30:04one post to one posted a Instagram. 12 posted a probably
- 30:11Tick Tock many as I can Twitter depends on what's going on in
- 30:16the moment because Twitter is not a Twitter as a scroll site
- 30:19as well. It's what is a weird one, isn't
- 30:22it? Like, I've had some stuff go
- 30:24viral on Twitter before or non-viral like borrowing sense
- 30:27that hundreds of Thousands or whatever they are, but it never,
- 30:31it never lead to growth, which was interesting like that people
- 30:37who engage with your post but they won't necessarily care
- 30:39about you unless unless you frequently post content similar
- 30:45to that. Lets say You're really
- 30:46controversial. Your yeah, I don't know funny or
- 30:48something. I look at Twitter as a just a
- 30:50massive group chat. Yeah, you know, you know, when
- 30:54you wake up in the morning and you got 40 notifications in the
- 30:56group chat and you go, I can't. Look at ya.
- 30:59You never, you never go back. You only see what's in front of
- 31:02you. Oh, that's a good show.
- 31:04Okay. Yeah.
- 31:05Are you never score back on Twitter?
- 31:08You may wake up as scroll a little bit and go, okay, because
- 31:12we're at this beautiful thing at the top.
- 31:14It says, what have I missed and it shows you a couple of key
- 31:17things and you go. Oh, yeah, okay, cool.
- 31:19And yeah, I kind of see Twitter just as giant group chat but
- 31:22open to everybody, I see Twitter, kind of like the
- 31:26Morning News. Yeah.
- 31:28And you but instead of being forced to pay attention to every
- 31:32single story, you can just pick and choose.
- 31:35It's like, and the worst ebook. Sometimes it's useful.
- 31:40I don't know. Like muscle.
- 31:41I saw something the other day that was.
- 31:43It wasn't exactly trending. But, you know, sometimes you'll
- 31:45get something on the sidebar where it will talk.
- 31:48It will have a topic featured. Yeah.
- 31:51And it will seem like it's trending but it's not it's just
- 31:53Twitter's highlighted that for whatever reason.
- 31:56So I discovered this this concept of quiet quitting in
- 31:59jobs and I started looking into it and then I just did a
- 32:03podcast. And and so that helped me
- 32:07generate some Last-minute content.
- 32:09Yeah. As a result and it was useful.
- 32:10And that's kind of how I used. Whereas yes, and it's good for
- 32:14putting links on, you know, Facebook's before putting links
- 32:17out there because I don't base any.
- 32:19When I look at the analytics, my Twitter and my Facebook, I
- 32:21purely based on how many people have actually clicked on the
- 32:24content and and got done something with it.
- 32:27I don't really based on De like shares or anything like that
- 32:29because realistically, as in a business side of things you're
- 32:34posting for a reason, If I post a picture of a basketball player
- 32:38and say, hey, look at this great photo.
- 32:40You look at you go. Oh yeah, cool, great for have a
- 32:43look at this great photo, click on the link to book your ticket
- 32:46to the next game. Okay.
- 32:48Now it's got a purpose. So now I base everything on
- 32:51clicks and how many people are actually done something with it
- 32:56but it depends on your industry that you're in, right?
- 32:58Depends on the industry you know.
- 32:59So if you're going to do a music one, you're not basing it on how
- 33:02many people have clicked that link you can write how many
- 33:04people have gone down loaded? That's on right.
- 33:07So what I'm good clicking on it, but how many people have
- 33:09invested their time their money in their effort to go a little
- 33:11bit further than just scrolling? It's hard?
- 33:14I mean, like when I post about podcast, I promote that like
- 33:19crazy. And I, you know, I know I've
- 33:22done posts like that where it's like, oh hey come check this
- 33:25out. I do this and it's just nothing
- 33:29zilch. Yeah, that's the nature of the
- 33:31Beast and the funny thing is the actual way that I've actually
- 33:34managed to reach People and actually get people to check out
- 33:38the podcast has been through the live streams.
- 33:40Yeah. Because you're in a different
- 33:42position and his army, like it's like if we're talking face to
- 33:45face now and I said, you could click on this link for me real
- 33:48quick, have a look at it, you feel obliged to.
- 33:50You actually have to do that because we're having that
- 33:52conversation with face-to-face for having that conversation you
- 33:55kind of think my best is because he's asked me right now.
- 33:58I feel awkward if I don't do you know Anna, maybe you do it that
- 34:01way or maybe you can sell it a little bit more, you know.
- 34:04Maybe live is Your thing, maybe the sitting around going, hey,
- 34:08everyone, how you doing? Hope you're having a great day
- 34:10and engage it all goes. Well, actually, I like this guy,
- 34:13so his podcasts might be good as well.
- 34:16I think yeah, some of the feedback I've had has been like,
- 34:19oh, I like listening to this, this is interesting.
- 34:23Like, I would like listening to the, add the Vodka like that.
- 34:27And that makes sense to me. That's that's perfect sense.
- 34:29And then some of the people are just genuine fans of podcast so
- 34:32it's like all you do that as well.
- 34:33That's good, that's useful, that's great.
- 34:35But I've really started to think about it like that.
- 34:37Like, try to always have your audience in mind.
- 34:41That is there in front of you. And like when I'm talking
- 34:46Normally I wait for people to bring things up and then I'll
- 34:49start talking about it so I'll plug it up.
- 34:51I'll get lucky again, episode drops.
- 34:53I'll be like oh by the way guys typically can do you Snippets of
- 34:57the podcast? I mean I post Clips if that's
- 35:00what you mean. Yeah.
- 35:01That's when we are. Yes sir, like you find like the
- 35:03best clip which is relevant to what you want to talk about and
- 35:06you know but then you just got hope that everyone is watching
- 35:09that clip is interested in that clip because actually what they
- 35:12could find, they might be interested little bit later on.
- 35:14So like when we used to do bathroom, Cast, we always post
- 35:16about 45 different clips because I'm gonna at least they're gonna
- 35:19be interested in one of them. That's, that's what I do too.
- 35:23I try like, I always post a few clips that are just Staples of
- 35:28my podcast. So, later on spoiler later on,
- 35:31in this podcast, I'll ask you two questions.
- 35:33I won't say where they are but they're like the questions.
- 35:35I ask every guest and I always post them because a they're
- 35:40really easy to clip on be it's kind of part of my thing.
- 35:43It's like thing I'm doing, I'm excited.
- 35:45Cited. Yeah and sit and see it's just
- 35:48kind of like that. That's an easy base point to
- 35:52start to be to begin with and yeah.
- 35:54And the other Clips will be just like okay let's let's take this
- 35:59this podcast so far. Okay, well I will definitely be
- 36:02clipping up some of the stuff that you said about Tick-Tock
- 36:04because I think that people using Tick Tock will find that
- 36:07interesting. Yeah, people will also look at
- 36:10it like, okay. So these guys had this show and
- 36:13this podcast and they spoke about a bunch of this stuff.
- 36:15Maybe To go listen to the whole thing because they spoke about
- 36:18all this stuff. Maybe it'll be useful.
- 36:20It's interesting. Was controversial.
- 36:22Etc, etc. So I absolutely pay attention to
- 36:25that and yeah you're right. It's hard like it's just me
- 36:29doing everything. So I don't know if it wasn't
- 36:31difficult, everyone would do it and everyone would be successful
- 36:34at it. And this is why I keep saying
- 36:35people on social media is you either get very lucky for a
- 36:40small amount of time or if you want something to be
- 36:43sustainable, it's very Cult. It's not as easy as just putting
- 36:47your phone up and going, hey, that's talk about something to
- 36:50keep this going. Consistently is flipping hard by
- 36:55all these creators that you see like who you think are actually
- 36:58speak complete nonsense because you will see him all these
- 37:00social media content, crazy like, oh my God, what a donut.
- 37:03This guy is actually somewhere along the line is a very smart
- 37:06brain behind that. Yeah, they're probably speaking
- 37:09to who, they know their audience to be so they kind of speak into
- 37:13that and trying to kind of At like it's harder to be a
- 37:18positive creative than it is to be a negative one.
- 37:20If you're a - Creator you carry a lot of noise because people
- 37:23want to argue with you laughing you talk about him, right?
- 37:27So you sometimes you know I've seen certain created like
- 37:31there's I won't mention the name but there's one particular
- 37:34creator that I saw who there's a lot of controversy surrounding
- 37:38them. And not, it's for bad reasons
- 37:41basically. Yeah, and from what I
- 37:43understand, a big part of the reason why there's So successful
- 37:48is because people just keep making videos about them talking
- 37:51about them, which of course if you have people talking about
- 37:54you making content about you, inevitably people going to go
- 37:57check you out, so that's part of it.
- 37:59But also this person appears to have like a lot of actual fans,
- 38:02which I'm confused about because they found, or are they going?
- 38:09This guy's really famous and really popular.
- 38:12So if I'm on his side maybe one day, I can be I'm very famous
- 38:16and really popular, there could be a part of it.
- 38:20That's like that but I doubt it like this is Another World's a
- 38:23crazy place. There's people who are into a
- 38:25bit of anything and everything, but the thing is like Tick, Tock
- 38:28rewards that kind of behavior like this person is involved
- 38:31with in a, let's say inappropriate stuff.
- 38:36Yeah. Yeah, that's fine.
- 38:37Like, they've been accused of things.
- 38:39Yeah. And other things they have done,
- 38:40and it's not good, right? But even this person,
- 38:45Highlighted the fact that Tick-Tock was actually
- 38:48showcasing them on their front page.
- 38:51Now, I know when I looked at that as like, the reason, why
- 38:53is, because they've got such a high five clicks few.
- 38:56Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:57So immediately and it's not just Tick-Tock, I know, I'm variant
- 39:00it up right now. YouTube did it remember when
- 39:02Logan Paul did his Infamous stunt?
- 39:05Let's call it that it was trending top 10 on YouTube when
- 39:09it when it happened and it's like, because they don't, it's
- 39:12the computer. If they don't, there's waiting
- 39:14for money, though. It's because you look at
- 39:16Tick-Tock. Now, you can subscribe to
- 39:18people, you can send people gifts and not all that money
- 39:21goes to the person that you're subscribing to, not all that
- 39:24money goes to the present, most of it.
- 39:25Most of it goes to take that, right?
- 39:27So, are they going to push on and gets a load of guess?
- 39:30Of course they are 100%. They are some business, you
- 39:35know, rightly or wrongly. That's what they'll they'll do.
- 39:39But there is positive people out there, which they would also
- 39:41promote and push for sure. Absolutely.
- 39:46Let's mix it up and talk a lot about your work as a TV
- 39:50commentator. So talk us through your
- 39:52experiences, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, that's kind of
- 39:56fruit about or side of it. So I commentate on our home
- 39:59games which are live stream too. Well, anyone who wants to watch
- 40:03and basically you know, it's the top division in the UK it was
- 40:08nerve-wracking as far as start and just like any old podcast,
- 40:12you know, if you if you plan way too much.
- 40:15Become quite scripted and scary where if you know what you're
- 40:19talking about. Sometimes sometimes all these
- 40:21have confidence in what you're talking about it's actually
- 40:25pretty positive you know and I enjoy that is great fun.
- 40:29Being my Coke I'm the co commentator.
- 40:32Weirdly enough the my head sort of the lead commentator me and
- 40:36him just get on so well and actually it's like two mates
- 40:40with a microphone talking about basketball.
- 40:42Oh cool by. And that's what is what it ends
- 40:44up. Ian died.
- 40:45It works really well. I would like it to go somewhere.
- 40:48I would like to, you know, get on to Sky Sports and whatever
- 40:51else. I'm friends with a couple of
- 40:54people that do that already but that's a that's a very small
- 40:59percentage of people get that opportunity.
- 41:01So you know, just keep plugging away.
- 41:03Until one day the opportunity comes and maybe I just need a
- 41:06cover for someone one day. I'll take that.
- 41:08You never know man. I mean it's you said earlier
- 41:10with your basketball career like you got an opportunity to be an
- 41:13assistant and then in the boss, Rolling from that.
- 41:15All it takes is that one opportunity is the same with me
- 41:18and acting. Like I don't, I don't have any
- 41:21formal training, everything that I've been in, has been, you
- 41:25know, it's been movies, short films commercials, that kind of
- 41:28stuff, and I've been lucky to get that and moving forwards,
- 41:33I'm taking a big risk on myself, trying to get into those
- 41:36Industries but I'm not doing it. Like, in the way, you know
- 41:39printers, I don't have money to go and get acting classes or
- 41:42whatever. So I do whatever I can do, Do
- 41:45yes. And I hope for the best.
- 41:47Yeah, well I'd say I didn't go to UNI, I didn't go to college.
- 41:49I didn't study media writing the commentating or anything.
- 41:52Like you know, I just enjoyed it.
- 41:55I'm 18 years old. I was a loser kids holiday red.
- 41:58Oh cool. Ha ha.
- 42:00You know, I worked in restaurants and I worked in.
- 42:03I worked as a Salesman for food companies you know whilst I was
- 42:07volunteer coaching and you just it just worked you know, maybe
- 42:11I'll go to work a little bit harder than some people that are
- 42:14not harder. Sorry I'll go work a little bit
- 42:16differently to some people, it may be qualified in the
- 42:18industry, you know, not not work harder than work, do it
- 42:23differently? Because I've got a I've got a
- 42:25bit of paper which has got great on it to tell people that I'm
- 42:29good at. I've got to prove to them.
- 42:31I'm good at, you know, now that you can probably kind of relate
- 42:37to that as well. Absolutely, now that you've
- 42:39dropped some, the fact that you've worked in customer
- 42:42services, our goal, Share with us any horror stories or just
- 42:49bad, bad experiences that come to mind because everyone's got
- 42:53some, I've got a memorable one when I was a holy rep.
- 42:57So we used to the airport runs and I worked in a Menorca, not
- 43:01me or come in Orca and they have a 12-hour.
- 43:05Airports was not 24-hour airport.
- 43:07So we brought a coach load of guests to the airport in the
- 43:10morning. Check em all in up they go.
- 43:14Flights are getting delayed and delayed, and delayed and delayed
- 43:19at this point. Obviously, they get angry, is it
- 43:21is anyways, he just go up there and say, hey, we're waiting for
- 43:23more news but blah, you know, fly should be with you soon.
- 43:27Not really knowing what's happening.
- 43:29It got to a certain point where like guys have this is delayed
- 43:31anymore. We're going to have to like
- 43:34really do something here because they've been here all day, so we
- 43:36go up there. We give them lunch, vouchers
- 43:38food, vouchers, and a piece for the babies.
- 43:40Anything we can to help people get a little bit angry and And
- 43:45and so forth and understandably. We then find out the planes not
- 43:49coming and we've got to then go up there and tell them and I
- 43:54remember walking up this escalator known as soon as I get
- 43:59to the top of it, there's going to be a few hundred people just
- 44:01staring at me because they want to know what's going on with
- 44:04their flight and I was like oh God I find I'll do it so so I go
- 44:08up. I'm not going to explain to
- 44:11these the Audis holidaymakers who are just ready to go home.
- 44:14Got to go to work the next day that they the flights not
- 44:18coming. So we're now currently trying to
- 44:20figure out what we're going to do to get you back.
- 44:24But the what we're going to do is get you on a coach.
- 44:26We're going to see it going to Hotel overnight and then we're
- 44:29going to try and fly your other next morning.
- 44:32And I've got this sort of Personality where I can't have
- 44:38can be like to think I can be a bit cheeky and get away of it.
- 44:41So I was kind of trying to read the room and I was self some
- 44:43really angry people there and there was some people were like
- 44:47what I met, you know, you're tough job, it is what it is.
- 44:49So we get more want to coach. We get we get them all on the
- 44:51coach. And I remember on the coach,
- 44:55we're heading towards this hotel to get them.
- 44:57Some food. So they can have a nice day
- 44:58before we come back tomorrow. And I'm on the microphone
- 45:02because I'm sad the front. Yeah, he said it from your
- 45:04microphone and I'm I don't know why I'm tend to hold a
- 45:06microphone. I got one in front of me and I'm
- 45:09like, you know, there's and Jamie really sorry about
- 45:11everything. You know, I'll try and talk you
- 45:14through what's going on and this plane flew overhead is playing
- 45:19through ahead. And I'm going ladies and
- 45:21gentlemen, if you look out the rights, Unfortunately, it's not
- 45:24your plane. Oh and you know there was like
- 45:29two or three people because I was getting so much abuse by
- 45:31this point by some people. I was going to get fed up and
- 45:35there was two or three people at the back.
- 45:38Who will I really mad? And then, actually, there was
- 45:41about 20 people who just burst out laughing.
- 45:45Absolutely, and stitches. And as they got for co-chair,
- 45:48like me, you've got some balls but you know what?
- 45:51That made my day. And we got men to the hotel and
- 45:56they stayed overnight. We got em off the next day, but
- 45:59it was a moment where I was like, I'm either in serious
- 46:02trouble or it's going to work but it worked lucky enough.
- 46:08I had a few other stories as a wrap, but some of them are can't
- 46:10tell something. Thank you so much for sharing by
- 46:15this is really it and listen this time could it would kill
- 46:19you for that I you know that I think it's good you're in a
- 46:24situation like that what can you do?
- 46:26I member watching like old episodes of that Airline show
- 46:28that used to be on itv2 or whatever it was back in the day
- 46:33and it's like there were so many times when the people would just
- 46:35be screaming and shouting at the the people behind the desk and
- 46:38it's like there's only so much you can do like when something
- 46:40like that happens. Yeah, all you can really do is
- 46:43try and find out. Be honest about it and smile.
- 46:46Yeah, I mean, at least at least in your situation like your
- 46:49company was able to offer something for these people, I
- 46:53never go back on those Airline shows, back in the day, like
- 46:55most of the time, they're able to help them.
- 46:57But sometimes it'll be like their flights delayed until
- 46:59cancelled and they're just kind of like sorry ass is nothing we
- 47:04can do. And it's like what will give a
- 47:06refund? Give him hotels.
- 47:07Give me something like what do you mean?
- 47:09Okay, so we're just crap and you've just given us money and
- 47:15Yeah. Haha.
- 47:19What's the best advice you've ever received?
- 47:23Wow, best advice I've ever received.
- 47:30That's a tough question, you know?
- 47:33That's a tough question because I always look in my industry in
- 47:37sports. We are always looking for advice
- 47:39from people. Always always, I think probably
- 47:45there was a, there was a coach that I used to really admire
- 47:49that I did some coaching clinics with, and they were talking to
- 47:54me about Talking about the past talking about a future because I
- 47:59always used to be a coach house. He's very hard.
- 48:01If we did this, we did that. If we did this, if we did that
- 48:05and it would have changed. And he looked at me as like, who
- 48:08cares? Like it like, who cares?
- 48:10It's done. It's done.
- 48:12I know it's such a simple analogy but he was always on
- 48:14about, right? Okay, you've now got to talk
- 48:16about what's happening now and what's happening next because if
- 48:19you don't talk about that and you spent ten minutes talking
- 48:21about what's being What are you going to achieve from that, you
- 48:25know? So if I'm start complaining
- 48:26about we should have done it differently.
- 48:30What's that actually achieved. But actually if I sit down and
- 48:32run through my head and go, okay, what we're going to do
- 48:34now, I have a positive conversation, so probably the
- 48:38best advice was from him. Was a guy called, it was his
- 48:40American coach called Dolphin Show water.
- 48:43He was the USA under-17s Olympic coach won a gold medal with
- 48:47them, and he was just like, When you're coaching, you've always
- 48:52got to talk about what's now, what's happening and it's kind
- 48:56of rubbed onto me on life as well.
- 48:58We're sometimes my wife hates me for it because I'm always like,
- 49:02she's like I have this didn't happen.
- 49:04I'm like, okay, cool. What we do about it?
- 49:06Hmm, you know, that I forget about, I take the emotion out of
- 49:10it, which is really hard to do. Sometimes take the emotion out
- 49:12of any past tense, and go. Okay, cool, we're done.
- 49:16Like, what's next like what's next to focus on?
- 49:20Trust and it's done, whether it was good, whether it's bad is
- 49:24done. There's literally nothing else I
- 49:26can do about it and it's the same mentality when we win
- 49:28battle games. Yeah, we can jump up and we
- 49:30celebrate but actually after that little quick celebration,
- 49:35what's next? by every hang on this for too
- 49:38long, we going to waste time and that's kind of rubbed off on me
- 49:42quite a bit. What were your biggest lessons
- 49:46and takeaways from your career in basketball approach
- 49:50everything with evidence because opinions one thing that evidence
- 49:57is a completely different story. So seems footprints for if I'm
- 50:00talking to players and I said to him hey man you had a pretty
- 50:03rough shooting game. Like, what does that even mean
- 50:06to anybody? That means nothing.
- 50:08I just literally criticized to go.
- 50:10We're if I say, hey, look, you took 20 shots day and he's good
- 50:14too. I've got come to us some
- 50:17evidence, it's a straight-up conversation.
- 50:19Like if I make a sub and a guy says to me, why did you stab me
- 50:22off? And I say no because you weren't
- 50:24playing very well. Again what like that doesn't
- 50:27mean anything is it? It's a dig where if I say I
- 50:30subbed you off because you shot to from 10, you turn the ball
- 50:33over four times in a row. And you can look at you and go
- 50:37fair enough, you know? So everything I do and again it
- 50:41rubs off on real life. If I have a discussion or an
- 50:44argument with someone, I'll only get really into it if I've got
- 50:49evidence or backup or or like a valid opinion, I wouldn't be
- 50:53like hey I think you're wrong then song goes.
- 50:56Why do you think I'm wrong? I'm like I don't know cause I
- 50:58just don't like it. Yeah you know it doesn't get you
- 51:02anywhere. It's just noise isn't it's just
- 51:04noise. Where if You can actually say, I
- 51:07don't agree with what you're saying, because of this reason.
- 51:09And that reason that reason. Okay, that makes sense.
- 51:13You actually come into a conversation with some logic
- 51:16rather than just passion and kind of emotion.
- 51:22Really. And what's the biggest life
- 51:24lesson you've learned so far? I'm still learning it.
- 51:31I think is, is China's own out from from things and just be in
- 51:36the moment again, probably my wife to blame for this because
- 51:41she always tells me, I tried to not bring work home with me.
- 51:46Yes, actually walk through that door.
- 51:49Put my bag down, Saturday's my baby.
- 51:51So that's my wife. And just enjoy that that moment
- 51:57and I'm still struggling with it because when I work in my
- 52:01industry I love it. I love my industry that I work
- 52:04in, I love sport, I love media. So actually if someone said to
- 52:08me you got to do it 24 hours a day.
- 52:09Probably would. And I'll probably do it with a
- 52:11smile, it doesn't. It's not healthy for you.
- 52:15Yeah, it's really not healthy for you.
- 52:18So oh yeah, that's probably one. I'm still working on.
- 52:20I totally agree with you. I find it hard sometimes to stop
- 52:25working and did like take the time to just rest.
- 52:28Like go watch a movie, go, Walkabout somewhere, like do
- 52:32something other than trying to work and it's like I'm on a
- 52:35week's holiday this week and I had to explain it what I'm on a
- 52:38podcast. I said it's not about basketball
- 52:39promise fair play. But now, I mean, it's a good
- 52:46it's a good thing to learn but it is Hard.
- 52:49Yeah, yes. Well, I just want to say a
- 52:52massive, thank you for being on the show.
- 52:55It's been an absolute pleasure as a final question to you.
- 52:57Do you have any upcoming projects or some final shorts at
- 53:00thoughts that you'd like to share with our listeners?
- 53:04You can check shorts too. If you want.
- 53:08I guess, upcoming, for me, personally, we got the
- 53:10basketball season, which is coming up.
- 53:11So, if anyone wants to follow our team, you're more than
- 53:13welcome to. We are, we are Plymouth City
- 53:15Patriots. We're in the British basketball
- 53:17league. We are starting preseason soon
- 53:21for the upcoming season. So there's that for me on Tick
- 53:25Tock and things like that. No, not really just kind of do
- 53:29my thing and you're trying to figure out a bit data at the
- 53:32moment is probably my main priority but you know nothing
- 53:36crazy coming up in a minute we're going to France soon.
- 53:39So if you follow me we're going to do some tick-tocks from
- 53:41France very soon and beginning of September for our pre-season
- 53:45tour. So yeah that'll be quite fun.
- 53:48Tastic. Well, it's been an absolute
- 53:50pleasure. Having you on the show bull?
- 53:52Thank you very much for appearing.
- 53:53And yeah, thank you for inviting me.
- 53:56Thank you. And to all the listeners of the
- 53:57Christian re podcast. As always, thank you very much
- 54:00for listening. Be safe.
