The Season with Peter Schrager: NFL Honors EP Dave Chamberlin · NFL explained.

0:07
Speaker 1: The season with Peter Schreger as a production of the
0:09
Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. Welcome everybody to have a
0:23
Speaker 1: season with Peter Schreger. I have Peter Schreger. It is
0:26
Speaker 1: Super Bowl Week. I am jumping out of my seat excited.
0:30
Speaker 1: I can't tell. It is wall to wall super Bowl everywhere.
0:35
Speaker 1: And as you're listening to this, this is posting on Tuesday.
0:38
Speaker 1: I am en route to Arizona, where I'll be doing
0:42
Speaker 1: Good Morning Football from the lovely state of Arizona Wednesday morning,
0:48
Speaker 1: Thursday morning, Friday morning, and then I'm going to be
0:51
Speaker 1: on the Fox pregame for the Super Bowl all day
0:55
Speaker 1: Sunday and what sounds like a pretty significant role. I
0:58
Speaker 1: was a little surprised, but my bosses have enough faith
1:00
Speaker 1: in me to say, hey, you're gonna be a big
1:02
Speaker 1: part of the pregame. I'm like, awesome. So I will
1:05
Speaker 1: be trying to gather as much information as possible and
1:08
Speaker 1: also trying to bring as much insight that maybe no
1:11
Speaker 1: one else has leading up to the game all day Sunday.
1:15
Speaker 1: You know, my initial look at this game is that
1:19
Speaker 1: we have the two number one seeds. We have two
1:21
Speaker 1: teams that have been just locomotives over the past few weeks,
1:25
Speaker 1: and we have two really young, promising and I would say,
1:32
Speaker 1: like awesome ambassadors of the sport at quarterback. Yet, as
1:36
Speaker 1: I always do, I want to look at the business
1:38
Speaker 1: of how these two teams operate and how they got here.
1:41
Speaker 1: And I look at what the Eagles and Chiefs have
1:43
Speaker 1: done in the past twelve months to go from teams
1:45
Speaker 1: that didn't make the Super Bowl to teams that did.
1:48
Speaker 1: Let's start with Philly embarrassing loss in the wild card
1:51
Speaker 1: round to Tampa Bay. I still hear Merril Reese, the
1:53
Speaker 1: radio announcer, being like this Gammer's finally over. That's what
1:56
Speaker 1: he said to end the radio call, which was a
1:59
Speaker 1: blowout to the Buccaneers. And you know, they could have
2:03
Speaker 1: sit on their hands and been like, all right, let's
2:05
Speaker 1: see what we do in the tray aft and let's
2:06
Speaker 1: see if we can get a couple free agents. They
2:08
Speaker 1: could have aggressively pursued DeShawn Watson. A lot of people
2:12
Speaker 1: thought last year that the Eagles were a real team
2:14
Speaker 1: because of Howie Roseman's aggressive nature and you know Deshaun
2:18
Speaker 1: watson skills as the player. They could have gone after
2:20
Speaker 1: him and said, let's make a big splash. Instead, they
2:23
Speaker 1: doubled down on building around Jalen Hurts, and I thought
2:28
Speaker 1: that was cool. Let's look at what they've done free agency.
2:30
Speaker 1: Hassan Reddick is on the block, guy who's a South
2:33
Speaker 1: Jersey native who went to Temple nearby and who had
2:39
Speaker 1: just an outstanding season last year for the Carolina Panthers
2:42
Speaker 1: on a one year deal and before that had an
2:44
Speaker 1: outstanding season for the Arizona Cardinals. They give him a
2:47
Speaker 1: pretty economically sound offer and they add Hassan Reddick in
2:50
Speaker 1: free agencies. So you add that piece. Then what do
2:52
Speaker 1: they do in the draft? Well, they draft Jordan Davis,
2:54
Speaker 1: which I think is a big piece of the future
2:56
Speaker 1: at defensive line. But they have a second first round pick,
2:59
Speaker 1: and we knew that wide receiver was an area of emphasis,
3:02
Speaker 1: and yet five wide receivers had already been taken in
3:05
Speaker 1: the first round. And they're at the eighteenth pick and
3:08
Speaker 1: trailing Burks is on the board, and you could probably
3:11
Speaker 1: grab one of these other guys. A Christian Watson was
3:14
Speaker 1: still available, Sky Moore was still available. No, they trade
3:18
Speaker 1: a the eighteenth overall pick and a third rounder and
3:21
Speaker 1: they get a j Brown. I mean that is aggressive.
3:24
Speaker 1: So so far, you add Hassan Reddick and aj Brown.
3:27
Speaker 1: As the offseason continues, they add guys like James Bradberry,
3:31
Speaker 1: They add guys like Chauncey Gardner Johnson. They add guys
3:35
Speaker 1: that they think and play immediate roles and help this
3:38
Speaker 1: team in big spots. I thought when Jordan Davis, the rookie,
3:42
Speaker 1: went down, they didn't just sit on their hands. They
3:44
Speaker 1: went out there and they went and acquired Robert Quinn,
3:47
Speaker 1: who hasn't played a role. But the fact they went
3:49
Speaker 1: out and got them from the Bears. I love. They
3:52
Speaker 1: went and they lured you know, Lynn Vaal Joseph out
3:55
Speaker 1: of his semi retirement to come join the team. They
3:57
Speaker 1: did the same with Damien Sue. They add, they add,
4:00
Speaker 1: they add their relentless and for that I give them credit.
4:03
Speaker 1: A lot of teams don't have that approach. A lot
4:05
Speaker 1: of teams would say, hey, look, we draft really well,
4:09
Speaker 1: we're sound, We've got this great offensive and defensive line.
4:12
Speaker 1: Let's just go to war with what we got. No,
4:15
Speaker 1: Howie Roseman and that front office would not sleep until
4:19
Speaker 1: they felt like they had a Super Bowl ready roster.
4:21
Speaker 1: And guess what twelve months after losing to the Buccaneers
4:25
Speaker 1: and embarrassing fashion. The Eagles not only are in the
4:28
Speaker 1: Super Bowl, they're the number one team. They've got what
4:30
Speaker 1: appears to be the number one offensive and defensive line
4:33
Speaker 1: in the sport. And Jalen Hurtz is on the cusp
4:35
Speaker 1: of superstardom. And that's because of not only his hard
4:38
Speaker 1: work and all things that he's put into this thing,
4:40
Speaker 1: but because of what they've done to surround him with
4:42
Speaker 1: the right pieces. That's the Eagles. The Chiefs. Chiefs had
4:45
Speaker 1: a whole different philosophy. Chiefs, how about this stat Chiefs
4:50
Speaker 1: went to the AFC Championship Game last year, twenty one
4:54
Speaker 1: of the fifty three players on the roster are different
4:57
Speaker 1: this year. That's forty percent of their roster is different
5:00
Speaker 1: than what they've trotted out for the AFC Championship Game
5:03
Speaker 1: last year. The biggest move, of course, was trading tie Rekill.
5:07
Speaker 1: And let me tell you something knowing that organization and
5:10
Speaker 1: I reported it when it happened. This was not a
5:12
Speaker 1: unilateral decision by Brett Veach. This was a conversation that
5:16
Speaker 1: involved Patrick Mahomes, It involved Andy Reid, involved Clark Hunt.
5:21
Speaker 1: Do we pay Tyreek Hill thirty million dollars and deal
5:24
Speaker 1: with what we have to deal with on the roster,
5:26
Speaker 1: or do we trade Tyreek Hill, get picks and then
5:29
Speaker 1: have some free space to maybe pick up some other
5:31
Speaker 1: players that can help us do the job. Well, Tyreek
5:34
Speaker 1: Hill's probably the greatest Chiefs wide receiver to ever live.
5:37
Speaker 1: They trade him and he made thirty million dollars this
5:40
Speaker 1: year for the Miami Dolphins, and he was outstanding. He's
5:42
Speaker 1: in finalist for Offensive Player of the Year. Tyreek Hill
5:44
Speaker 1: is amazing. I think Tyree Hills a Hall of Famer.
5:46
Speaker 1: That's a whole of the argument. But I think he's
5:47
Speaker 1: a Hall of Famer already. But they paid thirty million
5:52
Speaker 1: dollars to Dolphins for Tyree Hill this season, The entire
5:55
Speaker 1: Chiefs wide receivers room, all those guys, twelve guys combined,
5:58
Speaker 1: make fifteen million dollars total. So what did they do well?
6:02
Speaker 1: They signed Juju to a short term deal. They signed
6:05
Speaker 1: Marquez veld a scant link to a short time deal.
6:08
Speaker 1: They went out and they got Justin Watson, who was
6:10
Speaker 1: an outstanding practice player for the Tambay Buccaneers and who
6:13
Speaker 1: came in training camp and blew everybody away for the Chiefs.
6:16
Speaker 1: This year, they drafted sky Moore. They found resources with
6:21
Speaker 1: the Tyreek deal, and they spent them where they thought
6:24
Speaker 1: was important. Tyrn Matthew was a captain on this team.
6:27
Speaker 1: Maybe his best days were done. They were able to say, hey,
6:30
Speaker 1: rip the band aid off, say farewell, and they bring
6:32
Speaker 1: in Justin Reid who appears to be playing some of
6:34
Speaker 1: the best football of his career at the safety spot.
6:38
Speaker 1: They draft well, they make key plays, and they also
6:41
Speaker 1: made key free agent acquisitions. I thought bringing in a
6:44
Speaker 1: guy like Carlos Dunlap, a veteran guy to add to
6:47
Speaker 1: the defensive line. Smart sound. This offensive line that they'll
6:51
Speaker 1: be trotting out, it's completely different than the one that
6:54
Speaker 1: you lost saw in a Super Bowl when they played
6:55
Speaker 1: the Buccaneers. Completely different, top to bottom, all new guys.
6:59
Speaker 1: That is what Brett Beach does. He has not had
7:02
Speaker 1: to endure the rebuild. He has not had to endure
7:05
Speaker 1: the pain that the other teams have. When you pay
7:07
Speaker 1: the quarterback that huge salary, it's because they draft well,
7:10
Speaker 1: it's because they unload salaries and try to bring on
7:13
Speaker 1: others that might make more sense. And it's because they
7:15
Speaker 1: do the same thing that the Eagles have done for
7:17
Speaker 1: jam and Hurts. They've surrounded Patrick Mahomes. I am a
7:20
Speaker 1: geek for this stuff. I love roster building. I think
7:23
Speaker 1: what the Chiefs and the Eagles have done are two
7:25
Speaker 1: very separate paths to being in the Super Bowl. But
7:28
Speaker 1: both of these rosters are among the best in the league,
7:31
Speaker 1: and they've rebuilt teams on the fly. Chiefs lost the
7:34
Speaker 1: Super Bowl two years ago. Their team right now, aside
7:36
Speaker 1: from a few players, looks completely different than the one
7:38
Speaker 1: that played in that Super Bowl. The Eagles won a
7:40
Speaker 1: Super Bowl a few years ago. They've only got seven
7:43
Speaker 1: guys from that team on this team, and of course
7:46
Speaker 1: four of them are key contributors. Fletcher Cox and Brandon
7:49
Speaker 1: Graham on defense, and then Jason Kelsey and of course
7:52
Speaker 1: Lane Johnson on offense. You've got that core four. They
7:55
Speaker 1: were the lead dogs in that Super Bowl run. They're
7:58
Speaker 1: still all coming back, and of course you've got all
8:00
Speaker 1: these new players, and then you've got a couple of
8:01
Speaker 1: the other holdovers that were there on that team. I
8:04
Speaker 1: love both of these rosters. I think these gms are fearless,
8:08
Speaker 1: smart and decisive, and it's a testament to be aggressive.
8:13
Speaker 1: But also think about things a year down the line,
8:16
Speaker 1: two years down the line. You don't bring back Tyreek
8:19
Speaker 1: Hill unless you feel like there's a future plan and
8:22
Speaker 1: a greater future and a greater runway if you can
8:24
Speaker 1: trade them and get all the picks and all the
8:27
Speaker 1: money that they got in exchange for that Tyreek deal.
8:31
Speaker 1: Eagles versus Chiefs, I'm here for it. I love both teams.
8:34
Speaker 1: I am flying out as you're listening to this. I
8:36
Speaker 1: will be on the ground soon and let me give
8:39
Speaker 1: you a quick rundown of what I've got planned, because
8:42
Speaker 1: I think this is kind of the other part of
8:43
Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. You've got obviously the game and then
8:46
Speaker 1: the work. But here are some of the things that
8:48
Speaker 1: I'm excited for. Wednesday night, Fox is having a big
8:53
Speaker 1: pre super Bowl dinner and at all the other ones
8:56
Speaker 1: I've been too for Fox. I've been with Fox twenty
8:58
Speaker 1: years and fifteen years, and you know, every three years
9:01
Speaker 1: there's a Super Bowl. Jimmy Johnson gives like this riveting speech.
9:04
Speaker 1: I cannot wait for it. I like, I'm giddy for it.
9:07
Speaker 1: Jimmy gives a speech to the entire production crew, like
9:10
Speaker 1: camera guy up on the top, you know, left of
9:12
Speaker 1: the stadium, bring your a game, and you know this
9:15
Speaker 1: game right now? You know what's it gonna mean to you?
9:17
Speaker 1: Greg Olsen, like you know, it's a fired up speech,
9:19
Speaker 1: So Jimmy, you'll bring that other part of it. As
9:22
Speaker 1: of right now, I don't know if I'm breaking news.
9:24
Speaker 1: I don't want to steal any shine from the sports
9:26
Speaker 1: media reporters out there, But sounds like Sean Payton's with
9:28
Speaker 1: us all week. So Sean's the new coach of the Broncos.
9:32
Speaker 1: We've had a great year with him. I'll have plenty
9:34
Speaker 1: of stories from being alongside him riding shotgun on the
9:37
Speaker 1: pregame show, which I love. That'll be Wednesday night. Colin
9:41
Speaker 1: Coward invited me to a party. I don't know what
9:43
Speaker 1: that consists of, but Coward is one of my favorite
9:46
Speaker 1: guys in sports media, and I will be there. Colin
9:49
Speaker 1: Coward's having a party, I will be there. I want
9:51
Speaker 1: to see what Collins party's like and who he's hanging with.
9:55
Speaker 1: That's Wednesday, Thursday night NFL Honors. Also, I'm gonna try
9:59
Speaker 1: to double dip on this one. Howie Long is winning
10:02
Speaker 1: a very coveted award and he's been really good to me.
10:04
Speaker 1: Over the course of my career. The Pats I'm a
10:06
Speaker 1: Roll Foundation is awarding Howe Long this year. I'm gonna
10:08
Speaker 1: try to make it to that. That's going to be special,
10:11
Speaker 1: So that'll also be Thursday night. I'm gonna try to
10:13
Speaker 1: double dip on that, hopefully have some stories from that event.
10:16
Speaker 1: Friday's an interesting one. So Friday is like your big
10:18
Speaker 1: party night and everyone's going out and who's party going to?
10:20
Speaker 1: Who's party going what are you gonna do that? I
10:22
Speaker 1: don't know yet. I haven't been invited to any. We'll see, um,
10:24
Speaker 1: hopefully I get invited to one, or to be honest,
10:27
Speaker 1: probably sounds like a night where hey, do you want
10:30
Speaker 1: to get dinner and then see where it goes? Um?
10:32
Speaker 1: But yeah, I will not be necessarily on TMZ Friday night.
10:36
Speaker 1: Not really my scene as far as that goes. But
10:38
Speaker 1: if you do see a photo of me with Drake
10:40
Speaker 1: Um on a DJ booth and on a DJ booth,
10:44
Speaker 1: is that what they call it? Aaron on a DJ booth?
10:46
Speaker 1: I don't know. In a DJ booth what do we
10:47
Speaker 1: even call it? I'm more of a in It depends
10:51
Speaker 1: how crazy you're getting. You could be on top having
10:54
Speaker 1: a really big night. You could be on the djoth,
10:57
Speaker 1: but generally I think you're at the booth. I could
10:59
Speaker 1: be at the booth. Okay, last year, no joke. My
11:02
Speaker 1: wife came with me and we went to the Justin
11:05
Speaker 1: Bieber concert and we went to Biber and it was
11:10
Speaker 1: awesome and I hung with George Kittle and Josh Allen
11:14
Speaker 1: and uh luminout, Tony Gonzalez. Jeff Bezos was there. Is
11:18
Speaker 1: it Bezos or Bezos? What do you call him? It's Bezos,
11:20
Speaker 1: isn't it? I think I think I think it's I
11:23
Speaker 1: think I go with Bezos. Let's go with bezas Jeff Bezos.
11:28
Speaker 1: It does. But nothing sinister about him popping his head
11:31
Speaker 1: the Biber, I'll tell you. Um. So we're there, and
11:33
Speaker 1: then the party like is winding down a little bit,
11:35
Speaker 1: and someone's like, oh, Marshmallow's going on next, and I'm like,
11:38
Speaker 1: party's winding down. We're staying Marshmallow on the one. Two's
11:42
Speaker 1: I love Marshmallow. All In was out late that night,
11:45
Speaker 1: and then Saturday was recovering. But this year's Saturday, we
11:49
Speaker 1: have a full rehearsal for Fox, and then Sunday is
11:51
Speaker 1: a super Bowl. Um, it's busy, it's action packed. I'm
11:54
Speaker 1: very fortunate to go to another super Bowl. I know,
11:57
Speaker 1: Aaron you will be out there. Jason English, who's in
11:59
Speaker 1: the house, is gonna be there. I hope to link
12:01
Speaker 1: up with you guys. But let me tell you, by
12:03
Speaker 1: the time that that that super Bowl actually arrives, it's
12:06
Speaker 1: almost like an afterthought for everybody else because there's so
12:08
Speaker 1: many other events going on. And one of the events
12:11
Speaker 1: is going to be Thursday night, the NFL Honors. I'll
12:15
Speaker 1: tell you what, I love this event. I think it's cool.
12:19
Speaker 1: You get all the players and the coaches and the owners,
12:21
Speaker 1: and they all get dolled up, and there's a red
12:23
Speaker 1: carpet and they're being interviewed by Kevin Frasier, like it's
12:26
Speaker 1: entertainment tonight, and you've got Papa Razzi, you know, Alvin Camaro,
12:30
Speaker 1: what are you wearing tonight? Then the show starts and
12:32
Speaker 1: it's a really fun show. I love it so much
12:35
Speaker 1: that I said for our guests this week, like to
12:38
Speaker 1: start this thing off, let's go behind the scenes, Like
12:41
Speaker 1: what does it take to put together the NFL Owners?
12:44
Speaker 1: What does it take to put together the big show
12:46
Speaker 1: of the week. I feel like outside of the Super Bowl.
12:48
Speaker 1: This is the biggest event for everyone at home, and
12:51
Speaker 1: it's where you find out who wins the MVP, the
12:53
Speaker 1: Walter Payton Man of the Year, the Rookie of the
12:55
Speaker 1: Year's award, the Coach of the Year, and like, it's
12:58
Speaker 1: a celebration of football. It's Thursday night, it's on NBC
13:03
Speaker 1: and the executive producer it's a gentleman named Dave Amberlain.
13:07
Speaker 1: I thought it would be fun. Let's go a little
13:08
Speaker 1: behind the scenes. What's Dave Chamberlain's week, Like, let's get
13:11
Speaker 1: him on the podcast, Dave Chamberlain after this. One of
13:27
Speaker 1: my favorite nights of the year is the NFL Honors event.
13:30
Speaker 1: I've been lucky enough to go probably the last ten
13:33
Speaker 1: of them. It's it's cool. It's the Academy Awards for football.
13:37
Speaker 1: It's the only place you can see your favorite players,
13:40
Speaker 1: coaches and media personalities mixing with celebrities, and there's an
13:45
Speaker 1: award show, and there's also comedy and there's it's just tremendous.
13:48
Speaker 1: And now that we've got this podcast up and running,
13:51
Speaker 1: I was listening to a different podcast. It's called The
13:54
Speaker 1: Town and it's with a gentleman named Matthew Bellni for
13:57
Speaker 1: a company called Puck and on his podcast, he had
14:00
Speaker 1: the executive producer who was putting on the Grammys a
14:04
Speaker 1: couple of days ahead of the Grammys and was going
14:06
Speaker 1: going into what to take put them the show on?
14:08
Speaker 1: Is this show going to be a hit? And it
14:10
Speaker 1: was kind of got me excited for the event as
14:12
Speaker 1: a hole, And I said, I'm going to steal that
14:14
Speaker 1: exact idea, and I'm going to get one of the
14:17
Speaker 1: men who puts on the NFL Honors event, and we're
14:19
Speaker 1: gonna go deep dive into what it takes putting on
14:22
Speaker 1: an award show and colliding all these wonderful worlds. And
14:25
Speaker 1: with that, I bring on one of the men who's
14:27
Speaker 1: gonna be putting on the NFL Honors Dave Chamberlain. Dave,
14:30
Speaker 1: Welcome to the season with Peter Schreker. Thanks so much,
14:34
Speaker 1: Really appreciate you having me on Psyche for NFL Honors. Dave.
14:38
Speaker 1: You lead, Yeah, you lead a team that does not
14:42
Speaker 1: just NFL Honors. You guys have done things like the SPS,
14:46
Speaker 1: You've done the Oscars Red Carpet Show, You've done thirty
14:50
Speaker 1: for thirty. When you got the call for NFL Honors,
14:54
Speaker 1: what year was it and what kind of opportunity did
14:56
Speaker 1: you see that being in the car? Sure, So I
14:59
Speaker 1: got involved with NFL Honors from the beginning. I worked
15:03
Speaker 1: with a woman named Moriamt for many years, who goes
15:06
Speaker 1: way back with you know a lot of the folks
15:08
Speaker 1: that were at the NFL that had been at the
15:11
Speaker 1: ESPN around when the SPS, you know, we're coming up.
15:14
Speaker 1: So they called up Moura to produce that show back
15:18
Speaker 1: in I think it was twenty eleven, twenty twelve, and
15:20
Speaker 1: I was working closely with her. So I've been involved
15:23
Speaker 1: from the beginning, and you know, it was such a
15:25
Speaker 1: when we got that call. It's such a great idea,
15:27
Speaker 1: you know, and such an interesting fun thing to jump into. Um,
15:32
Speaker 1: you know, that first year, I think the show was
15:34
Speaker 1: in February. We got to call in October, so we
15:36
Speaker 1: didn't have a lot of time to put it together.
15:38
Speaker 1: But it's it's really been fun to see what it's
15:41
Speaker 1: grown into over the years. You know. I went back
15:43
Speaker 1: and I watched, you know, Alec Baldwin was the host,
15:45
Speaker 1: and I'm watching and like I was curious, I'm like,
15:47
Speaker 1: what was the vibe? As I'm doing research on this
15:49
Speaker 1: thing and there's this really cool moment where like Jim
15:52
Speaker 1: Harball wins Coach of the Year and Alex Smith goes
15:55
Speaker 1: up and accepts it and he's taken it from Chris Evans,
15:57
Speaker 1: and I'm like, this is almost like a time to it.
16:00
Speaker 1: You could see like what was going on in the
16:01
Speaker 1: world when this happened. And I feel like, now that
16:05
Speaker 1: we're eleven years to this, you could probably have a
16:08
Speaker 1: separate story for each one of these award shows in
16:10
Speaker 1: the making of it, and of course where you were
16:12
Speaker 1: in that moment in time. Yeah, for sure, for sure.
16:14
Speaker 1: I think we have one of the kids from Twilight
16:16
Speaker 1: present on that show, and it does like Tim Tebow
16:19
Speaker 1: was a big story in the NFL at the time. Yeah,
16:22
Speaker 1: it totally takes you back to that moment. How do
16:26
Speaker 1: you pick the host because that was Baldwin We've had
16:28
Speaker 1: of course, Steve Harvey has done multiple years. Last year,
16:33
Speaker 1: Keegan Michael Key. I want to say Rob Riggles done
16:35
Speaker 1: it in the past, cone in one year this year,
16:38
Speaker 1: Kelly Clarkson. What goes into the selection of the NFL owners. Sure, So, look,
16:43
Speaker 1: we always want somebody that's going to be entertaining, right
16:46
Speaker 1: and that the people in the room, you know, the players, owners,
16:50
Speaker 1: the NFL family, it's in the room, is going to
16:52
Speaker 1: respond to and be excited for. But and you know,
16:56
Speaker 1: I think what goes into that is somebody that's a
16:58
Speaker 1: genuine fan, you know, somebody that really loves the game
17:02
Speaker 1: and has a lot of respect for it and can
17:06
Speaker 1: talk about things and kind of rid people and make
17:09
Speaker 1: fun of things from that fan perspective. So, you know,
17:12
Speaker 1: we don't want to just go out and get anybody
17:14
Speaker 1: somebody that's like a real football fan that's also an
17:17
Speaker 1: incredible entertainer. Yeah, so Clarkson gets the call win, how
17:20
Speaker 1: does that all go down? And when do you guys
17:22
Speaker 1: start putting those cards on the sure? So, yeah, we
17:24
Speaker 1: went to Kelly late last year, you know, I probably
17:28
Speaker 1: around November something like that. And because she's been a
17:31
Speaker 1: presenter in years, I know that. Yeah, she's she's done
17:34
Speaker 1: the show a couple of times, which is part of
17:36
Speaker 1: what you know, identified her as somebody in our mind
17:38
Speaker 1: that would be great. She's obviously hosts a talk show
17:40
Speaker 1: every day. She's I think one of the most personable
17:43
Speaker 1: and charming talents out there, and she can do so
17:46
Speaker 1: many things. Well, so, yeah, we had her on the
17:48
Speaker 1: show last year. I got to talk to her a
17:49
Speaker 1: little bit and we thought she you know, we thought
17:52
Speaker 1: she'd be a lot of fun. She's also one of
17:54
Speaker 1: the busiest people in show business, so when we first
17:56
Speaker 1: started talking to her, you know, it's uh navigating her
18:01
Speaker 1: being able to do this around her schedule was a
18:03
Speaker 1: little tricky. But you know, luckily, after going through a
18:07
Speaker 1: few different things and trying to make it as as
18:11
Speaker 1: simple for her as we could, you know, she agreed
18:14
Speaker 1: to do it, which we were thrilled about. You know,
18:15
Speaker 1: it's funny because this super Bowl site kind of dictates
18:18
Speaker 1: where this thing is going to be, So I would
18:20
Speaker 1: imagine a super Bowl in Minnesota in the freezing cold.
18:23
Speaker 1: Is harder to get commitments from certain celebrities, and maybe
18:28
Speaker 1: one that might be in Vegas next year, or one
18:30
Speaker 1: that was in Los Angeles last year, Arizona, it's gonna
18:34
Speaker 1: start a little earlier than it does when it's in
18:36
Speaker 1: Atlanta or some other places. How hard was it to
18:38
Speaker 1: get the celebrity presenters on board or is this something
18:41
Speaker 1: that they line up to do. You know, it's a
18:43
Speaker 1: great question, and to be honest with you, when you
18:45
Speaker 1: know the show was on Saturday for many years, and
18:47
Speaker 1: last year we shifted to Thursday, you know, which I
18:50
Speaker 1: think is great. It gives us a little bit of
18:52
Speaker 1: a separation from the super Bowl, so you know, hopefully
18:55
Speaker 1: a little more chatter around around our show. But I
18:59
Speaker 1: was I was a little concerned about getting celebrities to
19:02
Speaker 1: Arizona on a Thursday night. But it's worked out great.
19:06
Speaker 1: We've got an incredible list of celebs that are coming,
19:09
Speaker 1: you know, coming in early and enjoying all the super
19:11
Speaker 1: Bowl festivities in Arizona. And you know, all the players
19:14
Speaker 1: seem to be coming out early. So it's it was
19:17
Speaker 1: proved to be less of a challenge than I expected
19:19
Speaker 1: it to be. No, it's good. And you know, you
19:21
Speaker 1: talk to some of these agents and some of these
19:23
Speaker 1: sales and marketing guys, Hey get us there on Thursday.
19:26
Speaker 1: We'll make up Friday and Saturday. We'll make sure we
19:28
Speaker 1: make the most of our money, and we'll make sure
19:30
Speaker 1: both of your time like while you're there. And that's
19:32
Speaker 1: what it's good. They've got, they've got an ad of
19:34
Speaker 1: incentive to come. I can only imagine last year when
19:39
Speaker 1: you get the call or you get the results that
19:41
Speaker 1: Andrew Whitworth is Walter Payton Man of the Year and
19:44
Speaker 1: it's in Los Angeles and his team is in the
19:47
Speaker 1: Super Bowl. That was the biggest shock to me that
19:49
Speaker 1: you actually got him and Cooper Cup in person. How
19:52
Speaker 1: did that go down? And what kind of stuff do
19:54
Speaker 1: you have with like the history of just like close
19:56
Speaker 1: calls and like the amazing way that this thing could
19:58
Speaker 1: come together. Yeah, you know, um, that was really interesting. Um,
20:03
Speaker 1: you know, when we found out that Andrew was winning
20:06
Speaker 1: in and then you know found out obviously the Rams
20:08
Speaker 1: were gonna be in the game. We'd never had in
20:11
Speaker 1: the history of the show anybody from either of the
20:13
Speaker 1: Super Bowl teams come to the show. Obviously when it
20:15
Speaker 1: was on Saturday, that's a lot trickier, you know. Um,
20:18
Speaker 1: the one big benefit of the show moving to Thursday was,
20:21
Speaker 1: you know, depending on the team, you know, different teams,
20:24
Speaker 1: different coaches look at this in different ways, but you know,
20:28
Speaker 1: there's a little bit more of an opportunity to try
20:30
Speaker 1: to get those players to come to the show. The Rams,
20:33
Speaker 1: you know, I think, really bought in and were excited.
20:37
Speaker 1: And look, we also didn't want to We didn't want
20:41
Speaker 1: either Cooper or Andrew to know that they were winning,
20:45
Speaker 1: right that's um, yeah, you got to keep that close
20:47
Speaker 1: to the vest. Yeah for sure, and not only for them,
20:50
Speaker 1: but for everybody else that's nominated. But the Rams were
20:54
Speaker 1: really incredibly to work with on that front. And you know,
20:57
Speaker 1: I think Man of the Years obviously probably the you know,
21:01
Speaker 1: most important award in the NFL. So knowing that was
21:05
Speaker 1: on the table there, I think really meant a lot
21:08
Speaker 1: to the Rams, um. And they were an incredible partner
21:11
Speaker 1: in getting those guys. You know, we tried to make
21:14
Speaker 1: it as easy and seamless as we could getting them
21:17
Speaker 1: in and out. Um. And you know, uh, Andrew kind
21:20
Speaker 1: of popped in backstage and walked out on stage, made
21:23
Speaker 1: an incredible speech. Um, and then you know headed out
21:27
Speaker 1: back to back to Yeah. But a lot of things
21:31
Speaker 1: converging there right Like, um, it was their home stadium,
21:35
Speaker 1: so you know that makes things all a little bit easier. Um.
21:39
Speaker 1: Uh in LA you know so Um. But yeah, we've
21:43
Speaker 1: you know, look, we've had obviously players winning that we're
21:46
Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl in the past and have tried
21:47
Speaker 1: to do different things. Um. But it's tricky, you know,
21:51
Speaker 1: it's tricky the coach. This is not the coach's priority,
21:53
Speaker 1: you know, No absolutely. Um, sports and comedy is really hard.
21:57
Speaker 1: We've seen attempts fail. You know, whether it be a
22:01
Speaker 1: TV show that this is gonna this is gonna be
22:03
Speaker 1: the daily show for for sports and it never works,
22:06
Speaker 1: or this is good, this funny gimmick on a pregame
22:08
Speaker 1: show you're gonna love it rarely works. Yeah, you guys
22:11
Speaker 1: have nailed it though these monologues over the years, whether
22:14
Speaker 1: it be as Seth Myers, or whether it be a
22:16
Speaker 1: cone in or whether it be Steve Harvey just roasting
22:19
Speaker 1: the shit out of the NFL the past few years.
22:21
Speaker 1: Last year I thought Gig and Michael Key was incredible.
22:24
Speaker 1: It's really hard threading that needle. Um, and yet you
22:27
Speaker 1: guys have been able to succeed with that. I feel
22:29
Speaker 1: like there's one hundred percent universal approval rating from the
22:32
Speaker 1: NFL Honors monologues. How have you guys been able to
22:35
Speaker 1: nail that? And when does it get to the NFL
22:37
Speaker 1: with what is going to be in the content of
22:39
Speaker 1: those scripts because some of them are pretty close to
22:42
Speaker 1: the edge. Those are those are my favorite meetings every year.
22:47
Speaker 1: So you know, look, it starts with the host, right,
22:49
Speaker 1: Like I said, having a host that's a genuine fan
22:53
Speaker 1: that you know it can really speak to these things
22:56
Speaker 1: from a level of from a place of passion, I
22:58
Speaker 1: think really helps. We have an amazing writing staff led
23:01
Speaker 1: by Bennett Webber. He's a huge football fan, as are
23:06
Speaker 1: all of our writers. Um. And you know, look it
23:09
Speaker 1: helps only having to do it once a year, right.
23:10
Speaker 1: I don't envy people that have to come up with
23:13
Speaker 1: ways to make sports funny on a daily show or
23:15
Speaker 1: on a weekly show. Um. So we've got a lot
23:17
Speaker 1: of material to work with, um and some incredibly talented
23:20
Speaker 1: people to pull those jokes off. Um. But uh, yeah,
23:25
Speaker 1: we we generally get a script to the league a
23:28
Speaker 1: couple of days ahead of time and everything. Or is
23:32
Speaker 1: it like you leave a little bit of room here, Well, no,
23:35
Speaker 1: we we usually we get them everything. We don't want
23:37
Speaker 1: to We don't want anybody to have surprises, right because
23:40
Speaker 1: we want to come back every year and do the show.
23:42
Speaker 1: Um uh. And you you know how it goes. There
23:46
Speaker 1: will generally be a few things in there that we
23:48
Speaker 1: know they're gonna cut, so that maybe they don't cut
23:50
Speaker 1: the things that are actually our favorites. Um uh. And yeah, frankly,
23:55
Speaker 1: I've been surprised some years at what we've been able to,
23:58
Speaker 1: uh to get through UM. And you know, it helps
24:02
Speaker 1: that we've been doing it year after year with some
24:03
Speaker 1: of the same people. And I think, you know, when
24:07
Speaker 1: things come from a place of love and passion and
24:10
Speaker 1: not of like sort of picking and attacking, UM, that
24:13
Speaker 1: that helps helps us get those things approved. There's so
24:17
Speaker 1: many sentimental moments. And we talked about to Walter Payton,
24:19
Speaker 1: Man of the Year, and I always end up at
24:21
Speaker 1: Bolleteers and I'm like, I didn't plan on crying tonight
24:23
Speaker 1: at the NFL Howners, but I do. Uh, your favorite
24:26
Speaker 1: funny moment in the eleven years of this show has
24:29
Speaker 1: been a success, Like, what's the one moment where you're like,
24:31
Speaker 1: oh shit, that that one sticks out? Oh boy, that's um,
24:34
Speaker 1: that's great. We uh early on Alec Baldwin's favorite player
24:39
Speaker 1: of all times, Joe NAMATHUM and I can't remember the
24:43
Speaker 1: first show or the second show. We Alec did a
24:46
Speaker 1: great bit in the audience, UM with Joe Namath Phil
24:50
Speaker 1: Simms next to exactly that's exactly right. It's yeah, yeah,
24:53
Speaker 1: I love this. I remember it telling where you know
24:56
Speaker 1: it was about playing in New York and and and
24:59
Speaker 1: playing in the spotlight and how you navigate that and
25:01
Speaker 1: he was, you know, sitting next to Phil Simms, um,
25:04
Speaker 1: who's very stayed U and uh, you know Phil's Phil
25:08
Speaker 1: was kind of like, oh, you know, it's you go
25:11
Speaker 1: home early and uh and do your job. And then
25:13
Speaker 1: Nameth just kind of popped out. Uh. Um. And you
25:17
Speaker 1: know he obviously navigated New York a little bit differently. Um.
25:21
Speaker 1: That Uh, that was one of my favorites. Alec Baldwin,
25:23
Speaker 1: if I recall Alec Baldwin asked them the question how
25:26
Speaker 1: about you, Joe, and he goes, well, I don't remember it, yeah,
25:29
Speaker 1: which is an amazing line. Yeah, that's that's It's great. Um.
25:32
Speaker 1: I thought Steve Harvey was hilarious both years he did it,
25:37
Speaker 1: And I felt like if there ever was a script
25:39
Speaker 1: that went to the NFL that I don't know whatever
25:41
Speaker 1: I heard on TV. That's a great point. That's a
25:45
Speaker 1: great point. Look Steve, Um. You know, Steve hadn't done
25:49
Speaker 1: stand up for a long time before he hosted that show.
25:51
Speaker 1: He hadn't told jokes in front of in front of
25:53
Speaker 1: an audience like that, and he was so excited to
25:56
Speaker 1: do it. Um. We also had the benefit those years
25:59
Speaker 1: the show wasn't live live, right, so we had maybe
26:03
Speaker 1: an hour or two hours to trim things and edit things.
26:06
Speaker 1: So you know, Steve just kind of went out and
26:07
Speaker 1: let it rip, and we we knew there were things
26:11
Speaker 1: that we were going to have to edit and cut
26:13
Speaker 1: out ed. Uh, you know that worked. That worked pretty well.
26:17
Speaker 1: And you know Steve also wasn't always going off teleproper.
26:20
Speaker 1: Steve just you know, he had things he wanted to
26:22
Speaker 1: do and say, and then he'd just go the great
26:25
Speaker 1: The great thing about him too is you may remember
26:27
Speaker 1: he you know, usually during a show, the host goes
26:31
Speaker 1: out does their bits, and then in between they're you know,
26:34
Speaker 1: prepping for the next thing, working with the writers on
26:36
Speaker 1: a script, or you know, just taking a break, taking
26:39
Speaker 1: a breather. You know, it's more exhausting to do this
26:41
Speaker 1: than he might think. Steve, though, in commercial breaks would
26:44
Speaker 1: go out and entertain the audience just because he had
26:46
Speaker 1: fun doing it. Um. So he'd go out there and
26:48
Speaker 1: chat with everybody during commercial breaks, um, just to have
26:51
Speaker 1: some more fun. So good. And there's this whole backstage
26:54
Speaker 1: scene that I was able to frequent once and it
26:57
Speaker 1: was like if you could pick the most random celebrities
27:00
Speaker 1: and most random football players, but it was like at all,
27:03
Speaker 1: just just hanging out backstage. I'll never forget. I went
27:06
Speaker 1: back stage and Paul Rud's back there and he calls
27:08
Speaker 1: me over and he's like, Peter, do you know Klais Campbell?
27:11
Speaker 1: And I'm like, yeah, I guess. And we were like
27:13
Speaker 1: this like intense conversation, like Paul read Klais Campbell and me,
27:16
Speaker 1: and I'm like, this is the show. Now, are you
27:18
Speaker 1: in the truck or do you get a chance to
27:20
Speaker 1: frequent that backstage? I'm backstage on backstage, so yeah. Usually
27:25
Speaker 1: there's a lot of things happening around me and behind
27:27
Speaker 1: sort of a setup with monitors, and I get headphones on,
27:31
Speaker 1: but there's a lot happening around everyone, so I look around, like, oh,
27:34
Speaker 1: there's Mark Wahlberg and Andrew Whitworth. I mean a conversation
27:37
Speaker 1: about God knows what you know? Um, yeah, it's a
27:41
Speaker 1: it's a fun it's a fun scene back there. You
27:54
Speaker 1: mentioned the name Moura matt And for the listeners, she's
27:57
Speaker 1: one of the all time legends in television sports TV
28:02
Speaker 1: and she passed right before the pandemic. I wanted to
28:05
Speaker 1: say in like February of twenty twenty. But she's the
28:09
Speaker 1: touch point for any favor that Moura man ever needed
28:12
Speaker 1: from Aaron Rodgers. He'd run to do it. Peyton Manning,
28:14
Speaker 1: run to do it, Paul Rudd, run to do it,
28:17
Speaker 1: you name it. Her legacy is all over the NFL honors.
28:20
Speaker 1: Her footprint is there. Can you tell us a little
28:22
Speaker 1: bit about who Maura was and really what this show
28:24
Speaker 1: means to her legacy and how you guys are going
28:26
Speaker 1: to keep it going. Absolutely? Yeah, she was incredible. Um,
28:31
Speaker 1: you know, as you said, so many people. She could
28:34
Speaker 1: get people to do things that nobody else could get
28:36
Speaker 1: to do owners because people loved her so much and
28:39
Speaker 1: loved her passion so much. Um, she was a force
28:42
Speaker 1: of nature. When she wanted something to happen, she would
28:46
Speaker 1: just go, go, go, go go. She'd get know so
28:49
Speaker 1: many times and you know, just try to push through
28:51
Speaker 1: it and flip a note to it. Yes, And she
28:54
Speaker 1: always approached you know, uh these shows from a place
28:57
Speaker 1: of telling stories and moving people and you know, trying
29:01
Speaker 1: to make the world a better place through some of
29:03
Speaker 1: the you know, silly shows that we make. And I
29:06
Speaker 1: think she was largely successful in doing those things. And um,
29:10
Speaker 1: you know, It's funny. I was just talking to somebody
29:12
Speaker 1: this morning, like, I can't tell you how many times
29:14
Speaker 1: a day doing this show, it goes through a mind, well,
29:17
Speaker 1: what would More do? How would More handle this situation?
29:20
Speaker 1: And you know, I can never I could never do
29:23
Speaker 1: a lot of the things she was capable of doing.
29:25
Speaker 1: But you know we, I think all of us have
29:29
Speaker 1: that in our heads as we go through, you know,
29:31
Speaker 1: the creative of the show and trying to decide what
29:34
Speaker 1: we're going to do and how we're going to handle things,
29:35
Speaker 1: and how we're going to navigate talent and just try
29:39
Speaker 1: to do her justice. You know, she was such a
29:43
Speaker 1: huge part of making this show to what it is. Yeah,
29:45
Speaker 1: and it's the same she was. And obviously, you guys
29:48
Speaker 1: work on the SP's for years. There's like this high
29:50
Speaker 1: quality of not only the show itself, but the guests
29:55
Speaker 1: that attend and are willing to participate and have fun
29:57
Speaker 1: and laugh about themselves, which we don't see on a
30:00
Speaker 1: day to day basis for a lot of these athletes
30:02
Speaker 1: and performers. Yeah, absolutely, she was. She was so great
30:07
Speaker 1: at getting people comfortable with doing things that you know,
30:10
Speaker 1: they had no business doing. You know, we we think
30:13
Speaker 1: of an idea and like, oh, that person's never going
30:16
Speaker 1: to do that. She's like, give me, give me, give
30:19
Speaker 1: me trying give me shot. And you know she was
30:21
Speaker 1: almost always successful, really good, really good at doing Yeah,
30:25
Speaker 1: I've had I had a chance to get to know
30:27
Speaker 1: her briefly. I mean, just an incredible toward a force.
30:30
Speaker 1: And you guys are carrying on the torch and you're
30:32
Speaker 1: doing a fine job. What's the measure of success for
30:35
Speaker 1: this year's NFL Honors? I know it's gonna be great
30:37
Speaker 1: and everyone's gonna have a blast. But the next morning
30:39
Speaker 1: you wake up Friday and you're like, what are we
30:42
Speaker 1: looking at? Is it ratings? Is it the Twitter reaction
30:45
Speaker 1: or is it just an overall high quality night where
30:47
Speaker 1: everyone feels good about the NFL. You know, obviously pay
30:51
Speaker 1: attention to the ratings, and I hope as many people
30:53
Speaker 1: watch the show as we can, and you know, hopefully
30:57
Speaker 1: if if the ratings are good, you know that that's
31:02
Speaker 1: good for us. But you know, I think the way
31:05
Speaker 1: I think about during success on the show is the
31:08
Speaker 1: people are partners in this show, right and the stakeholders
31:11
Speaker 1: in this show. Do they walk away happy? You know,
31:13
Speaker 1: do they feel good about the show we made, whether
31:16
Speaker 1: that's our host, you know, certainly the those in the
31:20
Speaker 1: league and the commissioner and you know, the owners and
31:23
Speaker 1: the people that you know have a say in, and
31:26
Speaker 1: if this show continues to get made year after year,
31:28
Speaker 1: you know, were those people did they come in feeling
31:31
Speaker 1: like this was a great event and something the league
31:33
Speaker 1: should be proud of. And then obviously the players, you know,
31:36
Speaker 1: the players and legends that are there that we're celebrating.
31:38
Speaker 1: We want them to walk away feeling like, man, that
31:41
Speaker 1: was that was cooler than I thought it would be,
31:43
Speaker 1: or that was more fun than I thought it would be,
31:45
Speaker 1: or you know, that meant more to me than I
31:47
Speaker 1: thought it might. So having those those people walk away
31:51
Speaker 1: feeling great about their experience and great about the show
31:54
Speaker 1: and the event we made, I think is our biggest
31:56
Speaker 1: marker of success on this show. You know, last year,
31:59
Speaker 1: I remember being there and Aaron Rodgers is sitting in
32:01
Speaker 1: the front row and Josh Allen was nearby, and during
32:04
Speaker 1: a commercial break, the two of them were chopping it
32:06
Speaker 1: up like it's pretty cool. Now they've got to know
32:08
Speaker 1: each other. They golf, they do all this stuff, and
32:10
Speaker 1: but that's cool, like to see like you know, thirty
32:12
Speaker 1: eight year old Aaron Rodgers with twenty four year old
32:14
Speaker 1: Josh Allen and they're cleared up, and I'm like, who
32:17
Speaker 1: makes the seating chart? That's you know. I've got a
32:19
Speaker 1: meeting a little bit later today to go through the
32:22
Speaker 1: first draft of that. It's fun. We have an incredible
32:26
Speaker 1: seating team that are just freshly here from the Grammys.
32:29
Speaker 1: I saw him as they got in here this morning.
32:31
Speaker 1: They do you know, I sat with Harry Styles was yeah, yeah, yeah.
32:38
Speaker 1: Dana Kennerson and his team are so good at this.
32:40
Speaker 1: So they'll they'll put together an initial draft, which is
32:44
Speaker 1: what we're going to go through this afternoon. We look
32:46
Speaker 1: at it on a big monitor and it's got everybody's
32:47
Speaker 1: names on it, and they do it based on their
32:49
Speaker 1: experience on this show and the run of show and
32:52
Speaker 1: how we're doing things. And then you know, the director
32:54
Speaker 1: and myself and a couple other producers will kind of
32:56
Speaker 1: go through and say, wow, maybe we'll move this here
32:59
Speaker 1: for that reason, or move this around here. It'd be
33:01
Speaker 1: great when we do this comedy bid if we have
33:03
Speaker 1: this person here and then can go to that person.
33:05
Speaker 1: So it's team effort. But like I said, Dana and
33:08
Speaker 1: his team are are really good at this. I gotta
33:10
Speaker 1: cut more for you because I love this the Awards show.
33:13
Speaker 1: You know, behind the scenes of the in the machinations. Um,
33:15
Speaker 1: have you ever had to put the music on and
33:17
Speaker 1: cut somebody off during a speech? Not in this show.
33:22
Speaker 1: We've you know, a couple of things right, like one,
33:27
Speaker 1: I think generally the athletes that were honoring don't tend
33:32
Speaker 1: to want to go on and on and on. Not
33:35
Speaker 1: as for boats. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so that helps us.
33:40
Speaker 1: And then you know, like I said, excuse me. For
33:43
Speaker 1: for many years we were on a bit of a
33:45
Speaker 1: tape delay, so we had like an hour to trim
33:48
Speaker 1: things if we needed to to get our show to
33:50
Speaker 1: times we're off the air on time, and so we
33:54
Speaker 1: had the luxury of being able to do that and
33:56
Speaker 1: not having to cut people off. Last year we were
33:59
Speaker 1: live for the first time. ABC was kind enough to
34:02
Speaker 1: let us go. I think we went four or five
34:03
Speaker 1: minutes long. Andrew's speech at the end of the night,
34:06
Speaker 1: I was significantly longer than we expected it to be.
34:09
Speaker 1: But it's incredible, and like you know, it's the last
34:11
Speaker 1: thing in the night. The last thing we want to
34:13
Speaker 1: do is like you know, play someone off like that. Well,
34:16
Speaker 1: there are times when will you know, flashing the telepropter,
34:20
Speaker 1: please wrap it up? And you know, if they don't
34:22
Speaker 1: do it, we'll just start flashing it a little more often,
34:26
Speaker 1: and they generally, you know, will take those cues from us.
34:29
Speaker 1: All Right, you personally, Dave Chamberlain, you don't, you know,
34:31
Speaker 1: get into sports and do all this stuff if you're
34:33
Speaker 1: not a fan at heart, who was the one athlete
34:35
Speaker 1: that you've met doing the NFL Honors that you're like,
34:37
Speaker 1: all right, that's pretty cool. Uh, you know, I probably
34:41
Speaker 1: I'm a giant Indianapolis Colts fan. I grew up in
34:43
Speaker 1: Indianapolis and love that, you know. I Mora was close
34:48
Speaker 1: with Peyton, as you said, So I think I'd met
34:51
Speaker 1: Peyton before NFL Honors, but spending time around him and
34:56
Speaker 1: with him through this was incredible. There was one year
35:00
Speaker 1: he always you know, generally he'll come present one of
35:02
Speaker 1: the bigger awards. Yeah, there was one year. I think
35:05
Speaker 1: it was in Houston. He was getting ready to present
35:07
Speaker 1: an award and he's just standing next to me backstage
35:11
Speaker 1: and he's starting to point out things that I'm not
35:13
Speaker 1: even noticing, And I was like, dude, you're better at
35:17
Speaker 1: this than I am. How how does this work? Um? Yeah,
35:21
Speaker 1: so you know, being able to sit there producing a
35:24
Speaker 1: show with Peyton Manning giving me notes that are really
35:27
Speaker 1: good notes, smart notes, that's pretty cool. I was thinking
35:30
Speaker 1: you'd be like, you know, there's this guy Ted Marcha
35:32
Speaker 1: Brota or Joseph die was in there. Dominic Rhodes walked
35:36
Speaker 1: right in and I couldn't talk. Peyton Manning's pretty good.
35:41
Speaker 1: And then my last one is this, like when you're
35:44
Speaker 1: at the Switch and you're at the Levers and you're
35:46
Speaker 1: doing all this stuff and it's going on, do you
35:48
Speaker 1: have a chance to appreciate and enjoy the night or
35:50
Speaker 1: is it just a pressure cooker? This is work, all
35:53
Speaker 1: of the above, all of the above. Last year, you know,
35:57
Speaker 1: like I said, we were live for the first time.
35:59
Speaker 1: As you might remember, getting into the event was a
36:02
Speaker 1: little bit of a challenge, like the traffic and the
36:05
Speaker 1: secure walk. Yeah, we're right right next to the stadium,
36:08
Speaker 1: so there were a lot of challenges that came with that.
36:10
Speaker 1: And at the top of the show, a lot of
36:12
Speaker 1: people that were supposed to be there, we're not there. Um,
36:15
Speaker 1: So we on the fly, while we're on the air,
36:20
Speaker 1: making decisions and and and talking to writers and stage
36:23
Speaker 1: managers and talent people like, Okay, we're gonna move that.
36:25
Speaker 1: We're gonna get rid of this person. He's going to
36:27
Speaker 1: do that by himself. We got to change the script,
36:29
Speaker 1: write that script so we can move him in there.
36:31
Speaker 1: That's the fun stuff, right, Like doing doing those things
36:34
Speaker 1: on the fly is the fun stuff. And you know,
36:36
Speaker 1: while it's like there's you know, you're you're trying to
36:39
Speaker 1: get everything done at the same time, I do feel
36:41
Speaker 1: like I have some appreciation for like, man, this is
36:44
Speaker 1: fun as hell. Um. You know, it's uh, there's nothing
36:48
Speaker 1: like live TV, um, and I really really enjoy that
36:51
Speaker 1: aspect of it. I can't wait. I'll be there. I'll
36:53
Speaker 1: I'll be hovering around. I'll probably try to yeah, I'll
36:59
Speaker 1: be denied, and then I'll have to be like, no,
37:01
Speaker 1: I know, Dave Chamber on my podcast, You're the man,
37:05
Speaker 1: give us real quick the rundown. When does red carpet start?
37:08
Speaker 1: Where can we find this? And just you know, let's
37:12
Speaker 1: get excited for this. This is one of the rare
37:14
Speaker 1: nights we can all just appreciate and celebrate football and
37:16
Speaker 1: what it's meant for us this year. Absolutely we are
37:19
Speaker 1: super excited. So there's a rid carpet show on NFL
37:22
Speaker 1: Network from eight pm to nine pm, and then we
37:27
Speaker 1: are on live on NBC from nine to eleven hopefully
37:31
Speaker 1: eleven pm sharp, and we don't go any longer. But yeah,
37:35
Speaker 1: it's it'll be a lot of fun. We've got, you know,
37:39
Speaker 1: obviously a lot of great awards. Man of the Year,
37:42
Speaker 1: we're gonna be. You know, we couldn't do a show
37:44
Speaker 1: like this about the NFL season without, you know, having
37:48
Speaker 1: a big tribute to the first responders and medical personnel
37:53
Speaker 1: that you know work with the mare Hamlin So yeah,
37:56
Speaker 1: and we've got some great celebs, Tracy Morgan, Tiffany Hattis,
37:59
Speaker 1: Joel McHale, you know, Cheryl Lee, Ralph her and some
38:04
Speaker 1: amazing players were get you know, We've done our best
38:07
Speaker 1: to talk some players into having some fun with us
38:09
Speaker 1: and doing some fun things with Kelly. So hopefully you'd
38:13
Speaker 1: be a great show of everybody really enjoys. Now, I
38:15
Speaker 1: don't know if Mahomes is going to win the MVP yet.
38:17
Speaker 1: I don't know if he's going to be in the building,
38:19
Speaker 1: but if he is not in the building, feel free
38:22
Speaker 1: to call me up to accept the Award on his
38:23
Speaker 1: behalf just so I can get my face on TV.
38:25
Speaker 1: I mean it's cool. I'm down with that. Absolutely, Yeah,
38:29
Speaker 1: it's good. That makes sense. That makes a lot of sense, dude,
38:33
Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you for joining everybody. The NFL Honors,
38:36
Speaker 1: presented by a Visilon is going to be on NBC
38:40
Speaker 1: this week on Thursday. Of course, the Red Carpet Nate
38:42
Speaker 1: Burlison will be running the show. Kevin Frasier will be
38:45
Speaker 1: there as well on NFL Network on Thursday beforehand. Dave,
38:49
Speaker 1: I know you're a busy man. Thank you so much
38:51
Speaker 1: for joining and giving us the lowdown on what it
38:52
Speaker 1: takes to put on an event like the NFL Honors. Absolutely,
38:55
Speaker 1: thank you for having me. Dave Chamberlain awesome insight on
39:04
Speaker 1: what it takes to put on a live events, what
39:07
Speaker 1: it means to do the NFL Honors gig, and then
39:10
Speaker 1: really like all the bells and whistles that goes into
39:13
Speaker 1: it that maybe you don't realize when you're watching it
39:14
Speaker 1: on TV. Aron, did I come across as thirsty in
39:17
Speaker 1: a way trying to like beg for camera time multiple times? No? No,
39:21
Speaker 1: I thought that was an appropriate amount. Like if I'm
39:23
Speaker 1: going I think it's like three o'clock, like it was
39:26
Speaker 1: like a local. Like if I'm going at three o'clock,
39:28
Speaker 1: like I thought, if you don't ask to be called
39:31
Speaker 1: up to accept Mahome's award, if he wins, they're never
39:34
Speaker 1: gonna offer it. Who else are they gonna who else? Like?
39:36
Speaker 1: Who's going up there? Like Kingsbury is still in Thailand?
39:39
Speaker 1: I know that. So he's the college coach. He's not
39:41
Speaker 1: going up there his agent. I don't want to see
39:43
Speaker 1: any agent accepting or other does Brittany and Jackson. Jackson
39:47
Speaker 1: might come up. That would be a you know what,
39:50
Speaker 1: That might be the move and that might go viral.
39:52
Speaker 1: Jackson might have a dance or whatever like to go
39:55
Speaker 1: with it. That could be a whole thing. Um, I
39:58
Speaker 1: don't know. I thought that I was. Now that I've
40:00
Speaker 1: recorded it with him already, I feel a little bit
40:02
Speaker 1: gross that I was selling myself so hard, But you understand,
40:05
Speaker 1: people in my business are so much worse than that.
40:07
Speaker 1: I'm serious. I don't think. I mean, I think you
40:09
Speaker 1: were fine. Like he understands you know that you've been
40:13
Speaker 1: backstage already. If if he sees you back there one time, yeah,
40:16
Speaker 1: you've been there before. It was cool. It was cool.
40:19
Speaker 1: Um Dave is cool and his company puts on the SPS,
40:23
Speaker 1: it puts on NFL honors. My big prediction, I don't
40:26
Speaker 1: know anything, and I want you to predict too, So
40:28
Speaker 1: like that Walter paid Man of the Year is the
40:30
Speaker 1: most important award. It's what everyone does, and it's like
40:34
Speaker 1: unsavory to predict. I gotta be honest, A good Morning Football.
40:39
Speaker 1: When we got the thirty two nominees, I put together
40:42
Speaker 1: like a little pool and I'm like, everyone, pick who
40:43
Speaker 1: you think? Who do you think the NFL is gonna
40:46
Speaker 1: pick form Walter paid Man? There, Everyone went with DAK
40:48
Speaker 1: because he was like the biggest name. But the NFL
40:51
Speaker 1: loves their Cameron Hayward of the Steelers and they love
40:55
Speaker 1: de Mario Davis of the Saints. Those are my two
40:58
Speaker 1: wild cards. I think Cam Hayward might win it from
41:01
Speaker 1: the Steelers. I think Demaro Davis might win it. But
41:04
Speaker 1: there are so many good nominees and they're so many
41:07
Speaker 1: beloved guys, But DAK is the biggest name. What do
41:10
Speaker 1: you think they just give to the biggest name or
41:12
Speaker 1: do you think that maybe you get one of my guys?
41:14
Speaker 1: De Mario or Kid was kind of wondering if they
41:16
Speaker 1: would give it to Jared Goff, because Jared Goff, he
41:19
Speaker 1: had the scenes in Hard Knocks this year in the
41:22
Speaker 1: preseason with him doing m I forget the name of
41:26
Speaker 1: his foundation, but he was working with kids on the show,
41:29
Speaker 1: and so there's been he's a nominee. I wonder if
41:31
Speaker 1: he would get it. I like it. Your your bet
41:34
Speaker 1: is Jared Goff. I'm gonna go with de Mario. Davis
41:36
Speaker 1: is my bet tomorrow, Davis, New Orleans Saints UM. And
41:40
Speaker 1: if Dak wins it, Dak deserved it. It's something about that,
41:42
Speaker 1: just yeah, that Dak is a very famous player and
41:45
Speaker 1: he's nominated for it, UM very unsavored. A debate, who's
41:48
Speaker 1: gonna win Walter Payton Man of the Year. When all
41:49
Speaker 1: these guys give their time and their money to these causes,
41:52
Speaker 1: and yet here we are Super Bowl week. Aaron, We've
41:55
Speaker 1: got plenty more common. We've got multiple episodes this week
41:59
Speaker 1: that are in works right now, big names, influential names.
42:04
Speaker 1: Not to tease too much, but something different that only
42:06
Speaker 1: our podcast can bring. I'm getting excited for the Super Bowl,
42:11
Speaker 1: but I am also aware that it's it's just getting started.
42:15
Speaker 1: Aaron Kaufman, Jason English, Matt Schneider, of course, Jason Kleinman
42:20
Speaker 1: who churns out these social clips that help meg It
42:23
Speaker 1: go viral. Meredith Batton at the NFL, who has been
42:26
Speaker 1: so good to work with on this podcast all season.
42:29
Speaker 1: And then our maestro on the one twos is a
42:31
Speaker 1: gentleman named Jack Rudd. I love the theme music to
42:33
Speaker 1: this podcast. Guys, plenty more to come. This is just
42:36
Speaker 1: the first one. We'll see you later this week. The
43:05
Speaker 1: season Peter Schrager is a production of the NFL and
43:09
Speaker 1: partnership with iHeartRadio. For more podcasts from iHeartRadio, visit the
