- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, everybody?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome into another edition of to Check Odily Andrew decheco
- 0:14Speaker 2: here Eagles beat reporter for insidethebirds dot Com. I know
- 0:17Speaker 2: I did a podcast earlier in the day, but based
- 0:20Speaker 2: on the news that came down Wednesday evening, it warranted
- 0:24Speaker 2: an emergency podcast and a major shakeup with the Philadelphia
- 0:28Speaker 2: Eagles as renowned offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland announces that
- 0:33Speaker 2: he will no longer be the Eagles offensive line coach
- 0:35Speaker 2: moving forward. He released a statement shortly after six point
- 0:39Speaker 2: thirty Wednesday evening that said, Philadelphia, I've decided my time
- 0:43Speaker 2: coaching with the Eagles has come to an end. When
- 0:45Speaker 2: I arrived here in twenty thirteen, I did not know
- 0:48Speaker 2: what I was signing up for. I quickly learned what
- 0:51Speaker 2: this city demands, but more importantly, what it gives back.
- 0:55Speaker 2: The past thirteen years had been the great privilege of
- 0:57Speaker 2: my coaching career. I didn't just work here, I became
- 1:00Speaker 2: one of you. Stout out So that was from Jeff Stotland,
- 1:05Speaker 2: and that came out Wednesday evening. So obviously a major
- 1:10Speaker 2: shakeup and there's a lot to unpack here. This is
- 1:12Speaker 2: Jeff Stotlin's decision. But and there's reports out there that
- 1:19Speaker 2: the Eagles have, you know, welcome him, welcome him to
- 1:24Speaker 2: remain a part of the team in some capacity, but
- 1:27Speaker 2: it sounds like Jeff Stotlin will take some time to
- 1:31Speaker 2: weigh options and consider his future. I imagine that there's
- 1:34Speaker 2: going to be teams lining up to get Jeff Stoutlin
- 1:38Speaker 2: on board, whatever team is.
- 1:40Speaker 1: In need of an offensive line coach.
- 1:41Speaker 2: That is, it's a little late in the process, but
- 1:44Speaker 2: somebody with that kind of resume commands a lot of
- 1:46Speaker 2: attention when they shake free, and this is something that
- 1:51Speaker 2: it is unforeseen. I know, Sean Mannion at thirty three
- 1:54Speaker 2: years old, is coming in and he's now going to
- 1:57Speaker 2: have some say with his coaches and all of that.
- 2:00Speaker 2: But someone like Jeff Stoutland is a coach that his
- 2:03Speaker 2: resume speaks for itself. He's one of the most respected
- 2:06Speaker 2: position coaches in the NFL, arguably the most important position
- 2:10Speaker 2: coach in the NFL, with a track record that screams
- 2:13Speaker 2: Hall of Fame. So you obviously want to try to
- 2:16Speaker 2: find a way to keep that coach on staff. But
- 2:18Speaker 2: Jeff Stoutland obviously decided that he wanted to step away.
- 2:22Speaker 2: And then there's a lot of questions that come from
- 2:26Speaker 2: this because for the Eagles, they've played a certain style
- 2:32Speaker 2: and Jeff Outen was obviously the run game coordinator as well. Now,
- 2:35Speaker 2: Jeff McClain reported last week that his run game responsibility
- 2:42Speaker 2: shifted last season, and I think you saw a little
- 2:45Speaker 2: bit of a difference later in the season based on
- 2:48Speaker 2: the run game. But this is someone who had been
- 2:50Speaker 2: the offensive line coach and the run game coordinator with
- 2:54Speaker 2: the responsibilities shifting last season. And then you have to
- 2:57Speaker 2: look at what Sean Mannion and his vision for the
- 3:01Speaker 2: running game this year is going to be to kind
- 3:03Speaker 2: of reimagine the offense, and it's going to be a
- 3:06Speaker 2: stark contrast from what the Eagles have done under Jeff Stoutland.
- 3:10Speaker 2: So you're shaking things up from that perspective. It's a
- 3:13Speaker 2: philosophy that is sort of derived in the Kyle Shanahan
- 3:20Speaker 2: Sean McVay style, and the Eagles haven't done that before
- 3:24Speaker 2: and it's a whole different concept to what they've been doing.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And so I think you take all those things into consideration.
- 3:31Speaker 2: But there's a lot of things here because what the
- 3:34Speaker 2: Eagles were doing, I thought was sufficient enough. Jeff Stotlin's
- 3:39Speaker 2: track record being the run game coordinator speaks enough for itself.
- 3:44Speaker 2: They had a two thousand yard rusher in twenty twenty four,
- 3:47Speaker 2: Miles Sanders has done well, DeAndre Swift has done well.
- 3:51Speaker 2: You kind of go down the list, Lashawan McCoy. There's
- 3:54Speaker 2: been a number of players who have had great success
- 3:57Speaker 2: running behind the league's top offensive line and sort of
- 4:02Speaker 2: choreographed by Jeff Stoutlin. So last season was a blip
- 4:07Speaker 2: on the radar, but to shift in philosophy is something
- 4:13Speaker 2: that I think is going to be a little bit
- 4:15Speaker 2: more significant than can be fully appreciated on the surface,
- 4:19Speaker 2: right because you're now doing There's always so many different
- 4:23Speaker 2: things you can do in the run game, obviously, but
- 4:25Speaker 2: some of the things that whether it was the forty
- 4:28Speaker 2: nine ers or the Rams, what they do with their
- 4:31Speaker 2: their run design. When you have the kind of personnel
- 4:34Speaker 2: the Eagles have landon Dickerson and Jordan Mylotta and those
- 4:39Speaker 2: type of players, I'm not so sure that they're going
- 4:42Speaker 2: to thrive moving latterly as much as they would powering
- 4:45Speaker 2: forward on those inside zone type of runs. I don't
- 4:48Speaker 2: view the run game in of itself as an issue
- 4:51Speaker 2: last season. As much as I view the health of
- 4:54Speaker 2: the offensive line with Cam Jurgens, Landon Dickerson, Jordan Mylotta,
- 4:58Speaker 2: Lane Johnson, the only healthy one was Tyler Steen, and
- 5:02Speaker 2: so that greatly impacted the run game effectiveness. So I
- 5:07Speaker 2: don't know that I would totally abandon this style, But
- 5:10Speaker 2: when you're bringing in a new coach who has his
- 5:12Speaker 2: own vision of what he wants it to look like,
- 5:14Speaker 2: that's some of the things that come with it. Quarterback
- 5:17Speaker 2: coach is another one that you may see. You're likely
- 5:22Speaker 2: to see a difference there, But this one is a
- 5:25Speaker 2: pretty big loss for the photoph Eagles.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Normally, I'm always very.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Measured in how I approach things, but knowing his track
- 5:32Speaker 2: record of success, development, demonstrated performance, I think that this
- 5:38Speaker 2: is something that shouldn't be taken lightly. And then you
- 5:41Speaker 2: have to wonder who will be the next coach that
- 5:43Speaker 2: can do that. Yes, it's a little late in the process,
- 5:46Speaker 2: but they can find someone that's going to be a
- 5:48Speaker 2: little bit more well versed in the schematic point of view,
- 5:53Speaker 2: that is in alignment with Sean Mannion and things like that.
- 5:56Speaker 2: But make no mistake, this is going to be a
- 5:59Speaker 2: dress different looking offense next season. All signs point to
- 6:04Speaker 2: that based off of the hiring of Sean Mannion and
- 6:07Speaker 2: his background, his limited background in Green Bay, Josh Grizzard,
- 6:12Speaker 2: and some of the passing game concepts that he was
- 6:15Speaker 2: implementing in Tampa Bay when he was the pass game coordinator,
- 6:17Speaker 2: even when he was offensive coordinator last season. And if
- 6:21Speaker 2: you get a different quarterback coach in there, they're going
- 6:24Speaker 2: to have a little bit of a different vision than
- 6:26Speaker 2: Scott Leffler, and they're going to be more aligned with
- 6:30Speaker 2: the way that Sean Mannion wants the quarterback to play.
- 6:33Speaker 2: And you're going to have a different offensive line coach
- 6:37Speaker 2: and a different run game coordinator. So I'm not saying
- 6:40Speaker 2: Leagles are ripping out the foundation offensively and completely scrapping
- 6:44Speaker 2: what they've done in the past, because we simply have
- 6:46Speaker 2: no way of knowing until you get to the regular season.
- 6:49Speaker 2: But based off of some of the tinkering that we've
- 6:53Speaker 2: seen thus far as far as the coaching staff goes,
- 6:57Speaker 2: the biggest one obviously being right the one we're talking
- 6:59Speaker 2: about right now with Jeff Stoutland, Yeah, this offense is
- 7:02Speaker 2: gonna look a lot different than it has in the
- 7:05Speaker 2: past it needs to, but certainly not at the expense
- 7:09Speaker 2: of Jeff of Jeff Stoutland because you know, and it's
- 7:14Speaker 2: important to reiterate that it was his decision and the
- 7:17Speaker 2: Eagles wanted to retain him. But it is when you
- 7:22Speaker 2: have to completely reimagine and get on, you know, be
- 7:28Speaker 2: in alignment with the same vision of how the run
- 7:31Speaker 2: game's supposed to look, and you have someone that has
- 7:34Speaker 2: that idea of how it's supposed to be, and you're
- 7:38Speaker 2: sort of used to doing it a certain style and
- 7:40Speaker 2: you have a successful.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Track record of playing a certain style. I mean, that's difficult.
- 7:48Speaker 2: And Jeff Stoutland is sixty four sixty four years old,
- 7:53Speaker 2: I believe, and he's you know, he's getting up there.
- 7:57Speaker 2: He has the right to make these type of decisions.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And I mean, we just went through this last week
- 8:02Speaker 2: with Vic Vangio and him contemplating retirement. Lane Johnson his
- 8:06Speaker 2: future is potentially up in the air. Though it's hard
- 8:10Speaker 2: for me to envision someone like Lane wanting to bow
- 8:13Speaker 2: out after missing the final nine games of the season,
- 8:17Speaker 2: if you're including the postseason, but sometimes health dictates that.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Sometimes the thought process of having to excuse me prepare
- 8:26Speaker 2: yourself for another season impacts the way that you're approaching
- 8:31Speaker 2: the decision making process. So there's a lot of questions
- 8:36Speaker 2: surrounding the personnel and the coaching staff and the offensive vision.
- 8:41Speaker 2: It's going to look different, which I know a lot
- 8:43Speaker 2: of you have been asking for, But as I like
- 8:45Speaker 2: to always say, be careful what you wish for and
- 8:48Speaker 2: we'll see if they're able to kind of shape this thing.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying
- 8:55Speaker 3: to clean up their habits, and that includes me. Honestly,

- 10:11Speaker 5: my mind is at ease ever since I got the

- 12:03Speaker 5: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 12:06Speaker 5: one and up.
- 12:08Speaker 2: But let's talk about Jeff Stotlin the coach, because he
- 12:13Speaker 2: arrived in Philadelphia in twenty thirteen. He was part of
- 12:16Speaker 2: the Chip Kelly staff. He went through three different coaching staff,
- 12:20Speaker 2: which is really rare, but I think it really accents the.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Value that he brings.
- 12:24Speaker 2: And I keep going back to his demonstrated performance. No
- 12:28Speaker 2: matter who he was working with, he found a way
- 12:31Speaker 2: to maximize their potential. And I look at whether it
- 12:35Speaker 2: was Jordan Milatta, which is perhaps the best story of
- 12:39Speaker 2: development that you can even think of, not even just
- 12:41Speaker 2: through the lens of the Eagles, but in recent memory,
- 12:45Speaker 2: someone who played rugby and hadn't played football before. Jeff
- 12:48Speaker 2: Stotlin molded Jordan Milotta into one of the better left
- 12:52Speaker 2: tackles in the game, and Jason Kelcey being an undersize
- 12:57Speaker 2: six round pick out of Cincinnati. Look at the job
- 13:02Speaker 2: that Jeff STALTLND did with him. Jason Kelsey's going to
- 13:05Speaker 2: be a Hall of Famer, and Jason Peters, he took
- 13:09Speaker 2: his game to another level when he started working with him.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Then it was Brandon Brooks, Nate Herbig Stefan Wisnouski who
- 13:18Speaker 2: stepped in and did a yeoman's job on their Super
- 13:21Speaker 2: Bowl run. Halapulavati Vatai same thing on that Super Bowl run.
- 13:25Speaker 2: They probably don't win a Super Bowl without the performance
- 13:29Speaker 2: of those two players having to step in in key spots.
- 13:32Speaker 2: And I attribute that to Jeff Staltland's coaching and preparation.
- 13:37Speaker 2: And then I think you look at whether it's Fred Johnson,
- 13:40Speaker 2: whether it's Brett Toth, there has just been a track
- 13:45Speaker 2: record of player development and maximizing those at his disposal.
- 13:50Speaker 2: One of the most valuable position coaches and impactful coaches
- 13:56Speaker 2: point blank to be in that building highly respect and
- 14:01Speaker 2: this is a pretty big loss when you look at it.
- 14:03Speaker 2: You're not often going to find a coach who comes
- 14:06Speaker 2: down the pike who was versed in teaching and he
- 14:11Speaker 2: coached hard or is as a depth at molding the
- 14:15Speaker 2: talent that he has, whether it be Day three undrafted players,
- 14:19Speaker 2: whether like Nate Herbig or Sua Opetta. There's just such
- 14:23Speaker 2: a vast pool of offensive linemen that Jeff Stotlins has
- 14:27Speaker 2: had his fingerprints on and taken their game to another level.
- 14:33Speaker 2: And then you also have to look at the other
- 14:34Speaker 2: layer of things. How will that impact the style of
- 14:38Speaker 2: offensive linemen that they look for, whether it be the draft,
- 14:41Speaker 2: whether it be in free agency, whether it be retaining
- 14:44Speaker 2: a couple of their own free agents in Fred Johnson
- 14:46Speaker 2: and Brett Toth, Brett Tooth who had a huge fan.
- 14:50Speaker 1: In Jeff Stotlin. How does that impact. So there's a
- 14:53Speaker 1: lot of different branches that.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Are sort of coming off of this, this whole, this
- 15:01Speaker 2: whole news story that came out on Wednesday night. There's
- 15:04Speaker 2: a lot of different branches and things that now trickle
- 15:07Speaker 2: down and more questions I would say that come from it,
- 15:11Speaker 2: and we're going to learn more in the coming days.
- 15:14Speaker 2: But this is the news that came down. I want
- 15:15Speaker 2: to give you my immediate thoughts on it. We'll see
- 15:18Speaker 2: where the Eagles go from here. But it's sort of
- 15:20Speaker 2: out as the world turns in the life of covering
- 15:23Speaker 2: the Philadelphia Eagles. But this has just been a quick
- 15:26Speaker 2: reaction emergency podcast to get it to you guys, and
- 15:29Speaker 2: that's going to do it for this edition of.
- 15:31Speaker 1: The Czecho Daily. I'm Andrew to checko and
- 15:34Speaker 2: I'll catch you all on the next one.
