The Man Who Wasn't There: John Tanner and the Murder of Rachel McLean
In April 1991, nineteen-year-old St Hilda's College student Rachel McLean vanished from her rented house on Argyle Street, Oxford, and her boyfriend John Tanner went before the television cameras to appeal for help, blaming a long-haired stranger he said had given her a lift from the station. On 2 May police found her body hidden beneath the floorboards of her own bedroom, and Tanner admitted killing her. He was convicted of murder at Birmingham Crown Court in December 1991, and decades later in New Zealand he was jailed again for assaulting a partner.
