- 0:06Speaker 1: He says, listener discretion is advised. Welcome to Patriot's Unfiltered
- 0:15Speaker 1: Eric looks good. I gotta give Eric props. He's got
- 0:17Speaker 1: his Charles Pittweller outfit on. He's all set, not how
- 0:19Speaker 1: it's pronounced. I have a new appreciation now, though, for
- 0:22Speaker 1: the Rivers First Tides argument that happened during one of
- 0:24Speaker 1: these parties. People were walking by Andy's throwing out f bombs. Yeah,
- 0:31Speaker 1: oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah. Gets were um lacking. Dudes.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Please join the dark side where we can question build
- 0:39Speaker 1: the GM. You don't have to twist yourself into a
- 0:41Speaker 1: pretzel defending the Patriots. Did you listen to the show
- 0:44Speaker 1: last night? I was just as disappointed with last night
- 0:46Speaker 1: as everybody else. Well, I just like people always coming
- 0:50Speaker 1: with this and I feel like I'm not this stupid
- 0:52Speaker 1: Belichick Hank that goes crazily well. Another great one, cold, strange, perfect, Chris.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I'm sorry didn't get to respond to you on the air,
- 0:58Speaker 1: but I have questions for you call back this week.
- 1:01Speaker 1: When did you start hitting Bill Belichick? When did it
- 1:04Speaker 1: become so miserable for you? Jack Jones, by the way,
- 1:06Speaker 1: would not comment on any of his off field issues.
- 1:09Speaker 1: He was asked about broke into restaurant, but he's not biting.
- 1:11Speaker 1: This is Patriot's Unfiltered, fueled by Duncan. All right, welcome
- 1:18Speaker 1: the Patriots Unfiltered. It's Tuesday post draft here at Gillette
- 1:22Speaker 1: Stadium in Um. For the next two hours, we'll be
- 1:24Speaker 1: wrapping up what happened over the weekend, giving our thoughts,
- 1:28Speaker 1: the thoughts of others. So it's gonna be a great show.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I can just tell yep, me too, as they say,
- 1:36Speaker 1: I got my popcorn ready. Deuce is here, Eric's here,
- 1:39Speaker 1: Paul's here, Matt's in the booth. I'm here. So why
- 1:43Speaker 1: don't we start right off by running down you know,
- 1:46Speaker 1: because not everyone listen to the shows over the weekend.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I get hard to believe. But um, you know, some
- 1:52Speaker 1: people might appreciate a little wrap up of the picks
- 1:56Speaker 1: for the Patriots. Yeah, that says it all, doesn't that
- 2:01Speaker 1: right there? The big sigh. Well, I think that they,
- 2:04Speaker 1: you know, the first round kick things off, and I
- 2:06Speaker 1: think that that drafting a guard, which we talked about,
- 2:09Speaker 1: was you know, a little disappointing for everybody. And you know,
- 2:11Speaker 1: I think the Patriots think that he's going to be
- 2:13Speaker 1: a Day one starter and come in. So I don't
- 2:15Speaker 1: think you can argue with that that's a need filled,
- 2:17Speaker 1: assuming he comes in and plays as a starter. Yeah,
- 2:19Speaker 1: there's no doubt it was a need. But I think
- 2:21Speaker 1: that they were off off the beaten path a little
- 2:23Speaker 1: bit and they went and did their own thing. And
- 2:26Speaker 1: you know, I think people are really reacting strongly to
- 2:31Speaker 1: how the draft experts are painting the draft. I had
- 2:34Speaker 1: the opportunity to last couple of days to go and
- 2:36Speaker 1: look at, you know, watch these guys all play and see,
- 2:39Speaker 1: in the best case scenario, what they might bring to
- 2:41Speaker 1: the table, and and I have some excitement. I certainly
- 2:44Speaker 1: have some you know, reservations about some of the picks,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and you know, some questions, but I think that they
- 2:51Speaker 1: acquired a lot of what they needed. I don't think
- 2:53Speaker 1: they acquired everything that they needed, which I didn't expect
- 2:55Speaker 1: them to do. I think there were still some concerns,
- 2:57Speaker 1: but I think that they got some players are going
- 3:00Speaker 1: to help them, and I'm excited to see a lot
- 3:02Speaker 1: of these guys come up. Yeah, they they needed the
- 3:05Speaker 1: positions for the most part that they drafted. They needed
- 3:08Speaker 1: a guard they didn't. You can argue whether or not.
- 3:10Speaker 1: They needed him in the first round, but they needed
- 3:12Speaker 1: that position. They needed wide receiver. I thought they were
- 3:15Speaker 1: going to draft more than one, but whatever, they I
- 3:19Speaker 1: didn't think they'd need two running backs, but they they did. Um,
- 3:24Speaker 1: the edge position, that's I think what you're referring to.
- 3:28Speaker 1: As far as a need that I don't think went
- 3:30Speaker 1: went a dress. They did draft a defensive lineman, but
- 3:32Speaker 1: he's more of a I think he's I don't know,
- 3:35Speaker 1: more of an interior guy, not not not so much
- 3:37Speaker 1: an edge rusher. But yeah, you know, I mean I
- 3:42Speaker 1: think they they It was a to me, it was
- 3:43Speaker 1: a typical Patriots draft where they took a player you
- 3:46Speaker 1: didn't expect, They traded down, not necessarily out, but they
- 3:50Speaker 1: traded down. They took a position you didn't expect, They
- 3:53Speaker 1: took a bunch of players higher than you would have
- 3:55Speaker 1: expected them to pick. It was back to business as
- 3:59Speaker 1: usual for me as far as the Patriots drafts are concerned. Ye, yes,
- 4:03Speaker 1: a lot small school guys. That's a couple of cornerbacks fast,
- 4:06Speaker 1: I mean fast. Yeah, that was another need I think, um,
- 4:09Speaker 1: you know, um yeah, corner sorry yeah, and you mentioned fast,
- 4:14Speaker 1: you know, Um, Thornton is fast. You know, if nothing else, Um,
- 4:20Speaker 1: the cornerback, the first cornerback they picked fast. Yeah, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 1: so if you if you want to get faster, you
- 4:27Speaker 1: better draft fast guys. So running back Peter Strong fast,
- 4:31Speaker 1: really fast, the fast fast were really fast guys. Yea. Yeah.
- 4:37Speaker 1: And the guard is fast wow. Athletic, No, in all seriousness,
- 4:40Speaker 1: the guard is one of the more athletic offensive lineman
- 4:43Speaker 1: in the draft. Yeah. And I think even you know,
- 4:45Speaker 1: Jack Jones, maybe not straight line speed, but but feisty
- 4:49Speaker 1: and quick. I mean, I think there's some size concerns
- 4:51Speaker 1: with the class, but I think Marcus Jones is my
- 4:54Speaker 1: my favorite guy right now, just because I think he's
- 4:57Speaker 1: gonna instantly give them an element of a dynamic returner
- 5:00Speaker 1: in punt return and kickoff return that they haven't really had.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I think, you know, Gunnar Alschowski, all due respect, it
- 5:06Speaker 1: was all pro season in twenties twenty. I think I
- 5:10Speaker 1: think Marcus Jones is really going to come in and
- 5:12Speaker 1: make an impact immediately on that. And I mean, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I think the size with the cornerbacks is definitely something
- 5:19Speaker 1: to talk about, but I think that they're both really quick,
- 5:22Speaker 1: really feisty, athletic guys that can move. So we talk
- 5:26Speaker 1: about matching up with some of the speed. I think
- 5:28Speaker 1: I think I like I like those guys. Yeah, I mean,
- 5:31Speaker 1: I you know, I think, you know, like Pete Carroll
- 5:33Speaker 1: is famous for wanting long corners, you know, taller guys.
- 5:37Speaker 1: But you know when you look at some of the
- 5:39Speaker 1: great corners, you know, like Vis and you know even Gilmore,
- 5:43Speaker 1: they're not huge. Yeah, you know, like you can be
- 5:46Speaker 1: five to eleven and be a good corner in this league.
- 5:49Speaker 1: It's really how how you're able to just you know,
- 5:53Speaker 1: stay with your guy and locate the ball, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 1: that instinct, that timing to know when to turn around,
- 5:59Speaker 1: you know, and and be with a guy without you know,
- 6:01Speaker 1: without you know, uh, interfering with him, you know, and
- 6:05Speaker 1: drawing a flag that has less to do with size
- 6:10Speaker 1: than it just with your raw athletic ability, you know. Yeah,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and I see that with those guys. I mean I
- 6:15Speaker 1: would say, I think, you know, Marcus Jones is a
- 6:17Speaker 1: little bit underneath that, you know, five eight, that's a
- 6:20Speaker 1: little bit short. And with Jack Jones, it's it's it's
- 6:23Speaker 1: one seventy five. It's it's he's light. Um, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: maybe he has the height, but he doesn't quite have
- 6:27Speaker 1: the thickness. But I think all these guys competitive and
- 6:31Speaker 1: you know right there and and and you know, making
- 6:33Speaker 1: plays on the ball, and you know, those are the
- 6:36Speaker 1: things they're sitting and it's I think, you know, I
- 6:37Speaker 1: just you watched the draft unfold. They drafted a lot
- 6:40Speaker 1: of guys that weren't on the primary radar except for
- 6:44Speaker 1: maybe strange and so as you then all right, well
- 6:47Speaker 1: let's actually look at these guys, and you know, I
- 6:49Speaker 1: just I think the thing I'm most interested in with
- 6:51Speaker 1: this draft is to hear from our callers who have
- 6:54Speaker 1: been doing nothing but complaining about the lack of speed
- 6:57Speaker 1: and the lack of separation. And I want to hear
- 7:00Speaker 1: what they think about about Thornton, you know, because we
- 7:03Speaker 1: got so many calls about Jamison Williams. I'm not gonna
- 7:05Speaker 1: say he's Jamison Williams, but that's what Jamison Williams looks like.
- 7:09Speaker 1: That's a tall, skinny guy who's a burner. Um, you know,
- 7:12Speaker 1: production not the same exactly, But I just hope that
- 7:16Speaker 1: those people are going to give him a chance, because
- 7:18Speaker 1: that's that's that was a common refrain for two years.
- 7:20Speaker 1: We can't we don't have any speed, we don't have
- 7:21Speaker 1: any separation. Um. But you know, apparently because PFF for
- 7:26Speaker 1: the Draft Network projected him as a third or fourth rounder,
- 7:28Speaker 1: taking him in the second round makes him a nonstarter
- 7:31Speaker 1: in some people's eyes. That are at least you know
- 7:34Speaker 1: that I'm hearing that are the vocal people right now
- 7:36Speaker 1: who are saying this is like the worst draft in
- 7:39Speaker 1: NFL history. Yeah, well, as they say, we'll see. Um, oh,
- 7:45Speaker 1: we have to wait now, Okay, I get it. Well,
- 7:48Speaker 1: literally we don't, but we can have our own were
- 7:52Speaker 1: bad this year, so we'll wait to see how it all.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I mean, we can have our own opinion, but to
- 7:56Speaker 1: truly know the answer, I'm gonna have to wait. I
- 7:58Speaker 1: agree with Mike on Marcus Jones. Um, I think for
- 8:02Speaker 1: a lot different reasons that Like, I think Mike is
- 8:04Speaker 1: a lot higher on it. I am really high on
- 8:07Speaker 1: Marcus Jones strictly because I think he will be an
- 8:10Speaker 1: electric return guy. And that's my Yeah, that's the only
- 8:14Speaker 1: saving grace to me in the draft. I I despise
- 8:18Speaker 1: this draft talked about him. Wow. I just I don't
- 8:24Speaker 1: think they I don't think they made a lot of
- 8:26Speaker 1: good picks. I don't. I mean, we'll see, like you
- 8:29Speaker 1: guys said, Yeah, but I don't think they made a
- 8:31Speaker 1: lot of good picks. No, what so are you more?
- 8:35Speaker 1: You know how that old saying, don't hate the sinner,
- 8:38Speaker 1: hate the sin. Are you not is here? Don't hate
- 8:43Speaker 1: the player, hate the pick. In other words, Yeah, well,
- 8:46Speaker 1: I'm not gonna hate player, right, but I've never even
- 8:48Speaker 1: met No, No, I don't. I don't mean, I don't
- 8:50Speaker 1: mean personally no, but I mean like, I'm not gonna
- 8:53Speaker 1: hate that. Like it's not like if if the if
- 8:56Speaker 1: Mike is right and then naysayers like that are all
- 9:00Speaker 1: ripping this draft. Let's say that they're right. It's not
- 9:03Speaker 1: Taikwan's fault that he got drafted four rounds higher than
- 9:07Speaker 1: people expected him to exactly. It's not like you know,
- 9:10Speaker 1: you use Pro Football focus. They had him like one
- 9:12Speaker 1: hundred and eighty ninth on the board. We took him fift.
- 9:14Speaker 1: We traded up to take him fifty. Yeah, I guess
- 9:17Speaker 1: that's not Tai kwan fault. Why should you hate him?
- 9:19Speaker 1: I got some insight on that one. I don't know
- 9:21Speaker 1: if you guys heard, but um, they they jumped over
- 9:24Speaker 1: Pittsburgh to get him and I guess one of the
- 9:27Speaker 1: new coaches in Pittsburgh was his receivers coach at Baylor
- 9:31Speaker 1: for two years, and the Patriots thought that maybe Pittsburgh
- 9:34Speaker 1: was gonna grab him. Pittsburgh, I mean, they know what
- 9:37Speaker 1: they're doing on my receivers. They're like, oh, they got
- 9:40Speaker 1: to steal they must know something. Do you think they
- 9:42Speaker 1: draft receivers? Well? I did. Yeah. What do you think
- 9:44Speaker 1: the odds are that the guy they got won't be good?
- 9:46Speaker 1: Which one Pickins picks that he won't be good? Yeah,
- 9:50Speaker 1: less than ten percent. I think I liked him. I
- 9:52Speaker 1: liked him. I mean I was more aware of him
- 9:55Speaker 1: than I was like, I would be more apt to
- 9:56Speaker 1: say that that's true if they didn't take a receiver. Now,
- 9:59Speaker 1: you just tell me they would just going to take
- 10:00Speaker 1: a receiver no matter who was on the board. I
- 10:01Speaker 1: don't believe that they draft well I didn't say that,
- 10:04Speaker 1: No, no no, no, I'm saying the idea about Pittsburgh. Yeah, like,
- 10:08Speaker 1: well they might have had them, they might have had Pickens.
- 10:11Speaker 1: And that's an easy crutch. Anytime you take a player
- 10:15Speaker 1: that some people think is a reach, you automatically say, well,
- 10:17Speaker 1: you know, like like built it built said it Thursday night.
- 10:19Speaker 1: He wouldn't have been around much longer. I don't know that. Well,
- 10:22Speaker 1: he wouldn't. Maybe he would have gone to Tampa Bay
- 10:24Speaker 1: the next week. I don't know. Well, they moved up
- 10:26Speaker 1: for a reason. Oh, the Patriots. I'm talking about Strange. Oh,
- 10:30Speaker 1: I'm talking about Thornton. Bill said after they picked Strange
- 10:34Speaker 1: that he wouldn't have been around much longer. That's what
- 10:36Speaker 1: he did say, right, So, I mean that's a good
- 10:39Speaker 1: crutch when it's absolutely impossible to know. No, but I'm
- 10:43Speaker 1: talking about Thornton. They moved up to get him, I know,
- 10:45Speaker 1: because they said that they thought Pittsburgh was going to
- 10:47Speaker 1: take him again, absolutely impossible to know. I know it
- 10:50Speaker 1: is impossible. But they felt strong enough that they did
- 10:53Speaker 1: move up. They I know, Yeah, they felt strong enough
- 10:57Speaker 1: to take Strange because they thought he was going to
- 10:59Speaker 1: be getting picked imminently. Why do we keep moving from
- 11:02Speaker 1: Thornton to Strange. They didn't move up to get Strange
- 11:05Speaker 1: because you can just explain away they actually moved down
- 11:08Speaker 1: and took Strange. You can explain away every move by
- 11:12Speaker 1: saying they thought he was going to get taken imminently. Okay,
- 11:15Speaker 1: but when a team forget about the Patriots, move up
- 11:18Speaker 1: and take a guy. Something's going on to make them
- 11:22Speaker 1: feel that they have to do that, I know. Yeah,
- 11:25Speaker 1: I don't think they are morons. Fred. I think that
- 11:27Speaker 1: they thought he was getting taken, okay, just like they
- 11:29Speaker 1: thought Strange was getting taken, so they took him. That's
- 11:33Speaker 1: what Bill said. Yeah. He also said that if they
- 11:35Speaker 1: didn't have a trade partner at twenty one, they probably
- 11:38Speaker 1: would have taken Strange at twenty one. Yeah, maybe that's
- 11:42Speaker 1: what I also think that if they had a Strange
- 11:45Speaker 1: trade partner at twenty nine, they would have moved back again.
- 11:50Speaker 1: So you don't believe Bill that that he was going
- 11:52Speaker 1: to get taken. I believe that, you know, being pressed
- 11:56Speaker 1: to have to take a pick. They took Strange because
- 11:59Speaker 1: they wanted him him. But do you think he wanted
- 12:01Speaker 1: out of the first round. I do. Well, that's not
- 12:04Speaker 1: what Bill said. And I know that you can't take
- 12:07Speaker 1: everything every day. I get that. I think if they
- 12:10Speaker 1: had found a dance partner to move into the second
- 12:12Speaker 1: round pick up some extra picks, they would have done that,
- 12:18Speaker 1: you know. So anyway, they did what they did. Yeah,
- 12:22Speaker 1: they did what they did, and that's the Chauffeurne. My
- 12:25Speaker 1: only thing is and I said, I have my popcorn
- 12:29Speaker 1: ready because I knew from talking to Deuce upstairs that
- 12:31Speaker 1: Deuce was was coming in hot and and I love it.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Um And it's an angry little duce. Yeah, he was angry,
- 12:37Speaker 1: angry Deuce, which that's my favorite dues. I don't know
- 12:40Speaker 1: about anybody else. We don't get to see a lot
- 12:42Speaker 1: of it, um my only like I don't really care
- 12:49Speaker 1: what other people necessarily say, because so often it there's
- 12:54Speaker 1: there's an agenda at work, but for an insistent amount
- 13:01Speaker 1: of years, Like can you remember the last time the
- 13:03Speaker 1: Patriots didn't get good draft grades? Now, yeah, I would agree.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I would agree with the people who think grades on
- 13:11Speaker 1: a draft immediately day after the draft are as foolish
- 13:13Speaker 1: as foolish can be. I agree with that wholeheartedly. Yeah.
- 13:16Speaker 1: I don't take these any more seriously than I took
- 13:18Speaker 1: all the a's. But I do find it interesting that
- 13:22Speaker 1: it went from all as ye like ninety percent of
- 13:26Speaker 1: the time to a lot of question marks from all
- 13:30Speaker 1: of the same people. Yeah, I find that interesting. I
- 13:33Speaker 1: think they took a lot of small school guys, and
- 13:36Speaker 1: you know, it was almost like you know, trying to
- 13:40Speaker 1: be smart again, like you know, everyone's zigging, we're gonna za,
- 13:45Speaker 1: we're gonna prove that we're picking up every rock. Listen.
- 13:48Speaker 1: I was disappointed because they didn't do what I wanted
- 13:52Speaker 1: them to do. I wanted to go defense, defense, defense, defense.
- 13:56Speaker 1: You know, everyone says the Kobe Dean is the steal
- 13:59Speaker 1: of the draft. Now I don't know about that, you know,
- 14:01Speaker 1: because a lot of teams passed him up for and
- 14:05Speaker 1: it had to be for a reason. But there were
- 14:07Speaker 1: some other guys and you know, linebacker, you know, fast
- 14:11Speaker 1: guys that I thought, oh boy, be great if they
- 14:13Speaker 1: could pick them up, and they didn't. Early, all right,
- 14:17Speaker 1: they did get the cornerbacks, which I you know, that's defense,
- 14:20Speaker 1: you know, I know, third and fourth, round five, I know.
- 14:24Speaker 1: So I wanted defense early and often, and that didn't happen.
- 14:28Speaker 1: But what do I know? You know, what do I know?
- 14:31Speaker 1: But that's why I'm disappointed, because they didn't do what
- 14:34Speaker 1: I wanted them to do, you know, And that's all
- 14:36Speaker 1: these draft grades are. Right. Well, I don't know if
- 14:39Speaker 1: mel kiper went in to this saying this is what
- 14:43Speaker 1: I want the Patriots to do, because he doesn't he
- 14:45Speaker 1: doesn't care. I mean, he's more objective. No I am no,
- 14:50Speaker 1: I know he doesn't want for the Patriots, but like
- 14:52Speaker 1: who he would have taken at that spot? Yeah, who
- 14:55Speaker 1: who he thought was good is period? Yeah, and so
- 14:57Speaker 1: based on they're going again as to what he would
- 15:00Speaker 1: have done. That's how they grade these Yes, yeah, but
- 15:04Speaker 1: but and the other thing is like, okay, so if
- 15:06Speaker 1: you're mel Kiper and you've ranked your board and you've
- 15:09Speaker 1: published it, and you've come out with every you know
- 15:11Speaker 1: where you think guys should go, and then a team
- 15:14Speaker 1: goes against your thinking, you have to give him a
- 15:16Speaker 1: bad grade or else you're telling people that you were wrong. Yeah,
- 15:20Speaker 1: it's Paul's argument before you know. So if you've pre
- 15:23Speaker 1: published where you think guys are going, how they should
- 15:25Speaker 1: be ranked, you have to stick with that. After the trade,
- 15:28Speaker 1: it was that guy that said, you know who that
- 15:32Speaker 1: should be. You shouldn't hope you're wrong, right, You should
- 15:35Speaker 1: hope that the team that picked the guy a hundred
- 15:38Speaker 1: picks away from where you thought you should be picked.
- 15:40Speaker 1: So if the Patriots picked guys counter to his rankings,
- 15:44Speaker 1: he has to give them a bad grade. And for
- 15:46Speaker 1: mel Kiper, see plus is a bad grade. Yeah, yeah,
- 15:50Speaker 1: across the board, that's every that's everybody's you know, ranking,
- 15:53Speaker 1: so right, I just want always. I also love how
- 15:56Speaker 1: they all have to couch it like usually Bill Belichick
- 16:01Speaker 1: has an obvious track record of success and he's won
- 16:04Speaker 1: six and he is the greatest ever. And one time
- 16:08Speaker 1: he said hi to me, but but I don't Yeah,
- 16:13Speaker 1: please don't, please, don't beat me up. Yeah, I just
- 16:17Speaker 1: see the thing that you said, Fred, Like, do we
- 16:20Speaker 1: really think that they're just concerned with trying to like
- 16:23Speaker 1: zig like, like, we don't really win in football. We
- 16:25Speaker 1: just want to do right, Like do we really are
- 16:27Speaker 1: we really thinking that? Or do they really believe that
- 16:29Speaker 1: they drafted a bunch of good players? Because I think
- 16:31Speaker 1: that they believe they drafted a bunch of Oh, there's
- 16:33Speaker 1: no doubt they're not just out to prove that they're
- 16:36Speaker 1: smarter than everybody. And like, you know, this is what
- 16:38Speaker 1: I like about the draft. Though. We're gonna see these
- 16:40Speaker 1: guys are all gonna show up. They're gonna have to
- 16:42Speaker 1: play out There're they're either gonna be able to play
- 16:44Speaker 1: or they're not gonna be played. They're gonna win games
- 16:46Speaker 1: or they're not gonna win games. That's what the that's
- 16:48Speaker 1: where the grades come from. And you know, I just
- 16:51Speaker 1: I just hope that people are so outraged, would at
- 16:53Speaker 1: least go and maybe look at some of these players
- 16:55Speaker 1: and say, well, you know, in a best case scenario,
- 16:57Speaker 1: if this guy's game translates as it was in college,
- 17:00Speaker 1: what do we have? And I think that you've got
- 17:02Speaker 1: some good players that improved your team. I don't know
- 17:04Speaker 1: that it's gonna work out, but you know that's I
- 17:06Speaker 1: just think grades are stupid, as we can all agree
- 17:08Speaker 1: two days after the fact, when they've never even been
- 17:10Speaker 1: in the building. Um, well, don't put me in the
- 17:13Speaker 1: box of like I'm just the every graph was great,
- 17:16Speaker 1: Like let me, can I come at you for a second?
- 17:18Speaker 1: Come Ome, I want to come at you about something
- 17:22Speaker 1: really specific, like the matrix the hand? What do you
- 17:26Speaker 1: what do you think of Jamison Williams. I have concerns
- 17:30Speaker 1: the same kind of concerns I'm gonna have about Thornton
- 17:32Speaker 1: with the no I didn't love them, but they don't
- 17:35Speaker 1: like them? And now that was what was it about
- 17:38Speaker 1: that positive? What was it about? What didn't I like
- 17:41Speaker 1: about him? Comporting their favorite word, comport man? I said,
- 17:46Speaker 1: who by draft process important. No, you don't like it up,
- 17:51Speaker 1: Matt dig it up concerned. He's skinny like Jamisons. He's
- 17:55Speaker 1: lightning fast, separation can do number of things the same
- 17:58Speaker 1: thing as Jamison. I've never heard anybody, I mean, maybe
- 18:00Speaker 1: maybe it's true, but I haven't heard a lot of
- 18:02Speaker 1: people questioned Jamison Williams's ability to get open and get
- 18:04Speaker 1: off press coverage. No, but his size. That's what I
- 18:08Speaker 1: do that. I brought it up when I talked about
- 18:10Speaker 1: him too. And I also think that it's difference being
- 18:12Speaker 1: the SEC in the Big twelve. I think that's a
- 18:14Speaker 1: big difference. And he even was was it started his
- 18:18Speaker 1: career at Ohio State, which I mean their wide receiving
- 18:21Speaker 1: corps has been really good. And those guys are translating
- 18:24Speaker 1: to the league. Yeah, wow, just like Alabama's are. Speed
- 18:28Speaker 1: is speed, size is size, and speed is speed. Bethel
- 18:31Speaker 1: Johnson and Chad Jackson had speed. Sure, that's it, but
- 18:35Speaker 1: that's all we hear. That's why can't get separation. They
- 18:38Speaker 1: got no down phil speed, Well they got it. We'll
- 18:40Speaker 1: see if it translates with Mac Jones and in the offense.
- 18:43Speaker 1: But you know, I remember walking down the hall after
- 18:45Speaker 1: one of the shows, and I said to you guys,
- 18:47Speaker 1: I just want one more guy. I want something to
- 18:49Speaker 1: see at training camp, and I'm excited. I'm excited to
- 18:51Speaker 1: see Taekwon Thornton out there and see what kind of
- 18:53Speaker 1: dimension he brings to the team in the offense and
- 18:56Speaker 1: you know how they use him and what kind of
- 18:57Speaker 1: speed he brings. So I got that piece of it.
- 19:00Speaker 1: It wasn't you know, it wasn't the traditional guy that
- 19:03Speaker 1: I usually feel like they like. You know, I am
- 19:05Speaker 1: surprised that they went in that direction, but I think
- 19:10Speaker 1: it speaks to they clearly got faster, Like they clearly
- 19:13Speaker 1: address things that people have been complaining about the most
- 19:16Speaker 1: in terms of Pierre Strong, in terms of Thornton, in
- 19:19Speaker 1: terms of you know, the defense of the defense of
- 19:21Speaker 1: Marcus Jones turns like crazy. But here's my thing, right,
- 19:25Speaker 1: I wanted speed so that maybe we could force the
- 19:28Speaker 1: Bills to punt. You want a defensive speed. I didn't
- 19:31Speaker 1: get that. Well yeah, yeah, and they did need all
- 19:34Speaker 1: I mean, I think Mike is right about that, they
- 19:36Speaker 1: did need all around speed. I just I don't think
- 19:39Speaker 1: they needed to get like a lightning fast running back.
- 19:42Speaker 1: I think there's two the two running back picks to
- 19:44Speaker 1: me or as head scratching as anything they did in
- 19:46Speaker 1: this draft, and to double up on a position that
- 19:50Speaker 1: you know, you have two established guys, So are you
- 19:53Speaker 1: Are you saying that definitively you're just gonna let Damian
- 19:57Speaker 1: Harris walk, Which is fine if you do by I
- 20:01Speaker 1: just feel like, well, also, maybe j J. Taylor isn't
- 20:04Speaker 1: the backup to James White that they want, you know,
- 20:07Speaker 1: and reports that James White can't even work out yet,
- 20:10Speaker 1: you know, so maybe they're still looking for that pass
- 20:13Speaker 1: catching run. This guy is a project as a pass catcher.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Is he He has some production as a receiver, and
- 20:18Speaker 1: we talked about it during the draft, But I'm starting
- 20:21Speaker 1: to write his thing up and it's the number. The
- 20:23Speaker 1: numbers aren't necessarily like he's got a long way to
- 20:25Speaker 1: go to be a three down option. That's that's a
- 20:28Speaker 1: viable point. And I think a lot of people just
- 20:30Speaker 1: jumped to this. Did James White? I did because I
- 20:33Speaker 1: saw I looked up the stats. I think he has
- 20:35Speaker 1: sixty something catches in his career, but he's not considered
- 20:37Speaker 1: to be a gifted Receiver's well, I mean, I think
- 20:40Speaker 1: he's one of the things said that he has lava
- 20:41Speaker 1: for hands. Oh, I see, I've seen good reviews of
- 20:44Speaker 1: his hands, and but you know, his hatches the ball
- 20:47Speaker 1: like it's made of lava, really, And what I watched
- 20:50Speaker 1: he I thought he had pretty good hands and was
- 20:52Speaker 1: catching the ball, but he wasn't used as like all
- 20:55Speaker 1: like James Cook. Sixty some odd catches. How many targets
- 20:58Speaker 1: did he have? You know what's that's that's like four
- 21:01Speaker 1: years Yeah, okay, but it's not great and at the
- 21:04Speaker 1: f FCS level too. Yeah, but he's got some, He's
- 21:07Speaker 1: got some wiggled to him. I was. I was more
- 21:09Speaker 1: impressed with him as a as a running back than
- 21:11Speaker 1: you know, the catching, which looked fine, but it wasn't
- 21:14Speaker 1: you know, like I mentioned James Cook, who was receiving
- 21:16Speaker 1: back in college, and you know that's clearly what he
- 21:19Speaker 1: translates to. So you know, he's a little bit more
- 21:22Speaker 1: more balanced, I think than than maybe initially right out
- 21:24Speaker 1: of the gate we thought, all right, so we all,
- 21:28Speaker 1: so it's gonna be a fun off season with Paul
- 21:30Speaker 1: and Mike. Yeah, usually Mike just sways me to his
- 21:33Speaker 1: side of things, but I don't think he's gonna do
- 21:35Speaker 1: that in this well, way do we get out there
- 21:36Speaker 1: and then all Asaden Tekekwon Thornis is blown by everybody
- 21:38Speaker 1: in a this that'd be great. I'm expecting him to
- 21:40Speaker 1: blow by these guys. Oh and we had some undrafted
- 21:44Speaker 1: free agent signings anyone of note? Um yeah, yeah, de
- 21:49Speaker 1: Kings like him. Kind of a family friend that one too. Yeah.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Kobe Tippett, Oh no, not no, he's not a he's
- 21:57Speaker 1: a tryout guy, I believe. Yeah, yeah, but I mean
- 22:00Speaker 1: still yeah, But congratulations to Andre Tippett Son getting you know,
- 22:05Speaker 1: a chance to try out with the team. Really, I mean, story,
- 22:10Speaker 1: talk at him yesterday. You must be like over the hill.
- 22:12Speaker 1: I mean because whatever the moon over the moon over
- 22:15Speaker 1: the hill or whatever, much like you and I, but
- 22:19Speaker 1: you know, Jesus, just to be able to Bill who's
- 22:24Speaker 1: over the hill never ever ever, just to be have
- 22:27Speaker 1: that opportunity, you know. Yeah. I hope he doesn't make
- 22:30Speaker 1: it to camp. Yeah, yeah. Story. One other guy that
- 22:34Speaker 1: I noted was was Cody Russey from Houston, who's a
- 22:36Speaker 1: center and I think they gave him like one hundred
- 22:38Speaker 1: and eighty K guaranteed, which so far of the reported
- 22:40Speaker 1: money guaranteed. That's well in a way the most. UM love,
- 22:45Speaker 1: he was just an interesting one. I love the tracking
- 22:47Speaker 1: of the guaranteed money for the undrafted free agents. Um,
- 22:51Speaker 1: what does David Andrews' contract status? How he's for a while,
- 22:56Speaker 1: maybe even three I think. And then last year it
- 22:59Speaker 1: was the last day extension. Yeah, oh yes, it yeah.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I bring it up because a lot of the defense
- 23:08Speaker 1: of Strange, which it got there it by by Sunday.
- 23:11Speaker 1: There was a lot of strong, cold Strange defending going on, Um, well,
- 23:16Speaker 1: you know he can he can play center. And I'm like, yeah,
- 23:23Speaker 1: you have a guy playing center, Like what what you know?
- 23:26Speaker 1: You just resigned him? Like why do you need a
- 23:29Speaker 1: you know, why did you need a center like that?
- 23:31Speaker 1: The versatility of being able to play center and guard.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I didn't get that. And then I think did they
- 23:37Speaker 1: signed two undrafted guys that were kind of predominantly centers, right,
- 23:41Speaker 1: the LSU kid that grew up around and Liam Shanahans
- 23:46Speaker 1: he's his uh Harvard. Yeah, he started his career at
- 23:50Speaker 1: Harvard and transferred to LSU for his last year. Played
- 23:53Speaker 1: pretty well. He was very excited. I know his um
- 23:57Speaker 1: his uncle is a friend of the family. Uh. So
- 24:01Speaker 1: I had a little bit of a connection, not not
- 24:04Speaker 1: not not not not, but um, he was he had
- 24:10Speaker 1: I had found out that he had been into for
- 24:12Speaker 1: a visit late last week and he was really hoping
- 24:15Speaker 1: that they signed him. He thought there was a chance,
- 24:17Speaker 1: but he wasn't expecting to get drafted. Are you saying this? Um?
- 24:21Speaker 1: I just thought that was interesting, Mike, that they had
- 24:23Speaker 1: a couple of like you don't really see a lot
- 24:25Speaker 1: of centers. That's it says like he was a center
- 24:27Speaker 1: a lot of times. It's a guard who can play
- 24:29Speaker 1: center or o l Yeah. Well, I think all the
- 24:32Speaker 1: all the offensive lineman um that they drafted all have
- 24:36Speaker 1: some versatility to him. Yeah. And I think Jason Hines
- 24:39Speaker 1: low round guy. I mean he looks like when you
- 24:42Speaker 1: you know what brought that up? Those are the picks
- 24:45Speaker 1: I loved. Y three three big offensive linemen late the draft.
- 24:50Speaker 1: One of them more than likely will hit it. I
- 24:52Speaker 1: mean it just that that's where you find your offensive lineman. Yeah,
- 24:55Speaker 1: and it seems like they've had to do that a
- 24:57Speaker 1: lot the last five years or so, draft multiple offensive
- 25:01Speaker 1: linemen bringing you know, there's two two they said, right,
- 25:05Speaker 1: there's stuber in Hines, Right, Yeah, stubor Hines are drafted
- 25:08Speaker 1: us see Shanahan where the other one defensive linemen. Yeah,
- 25:12Speaker 1: and strange of course, But but it doesn't seem to
- 25:15Speaker 1: you like that they've been drafting a lot of offensive
- 25:18Speaker 1: linemen them trying like like that's what you do. Yeah,
- 25:21Speaker 1: I want I want them to hit. I don't have.
- 25:24Speaker 1: I wonder what other teams they're probably doing the same thing,
- 25:26Speaker 1: because you need a lot. That's why that's why I'm
- 25:28Speaker 1: so upset about the need to have I don't want
- 25:30Speaker 1: one in the first you need to have eight of
- 25:32Speaker 1: them on your roster at any given time. I guess
- 25:36Speaker 1: I just feel like, to me, it's it's an admission that,
- 25:39Speaker 1: all right, we we we failed on last year's draft
- 25:41Speaker 1: with these guys. We've got to take them again. We
- 25:42Speaker 1: failed on last year's draft. We gotta take them again.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Like at some point you want to have like your
- 25:46Speaker 1: five offensive linemen for a while. They failed that. They
- 25:49Speaker 1: had two guys leave, They had Caras left and and
- 25:51Speaker 1: what's his face left? They traded one. Yeah, I know
- 25:55Speaker 1: they're gone, they're gone. Yeah, you know so, But I
- 25:59Speaker 1: but I look at see I think that's one of
- 26:02Speaker 1: the people that criticize Belichick in the draft I think
- 26:05Speaker 1: that's an area that they've been really good at. I mean,
- 26:07Speaker 1: if you look at it, it's Ted Carris was a
- 26:11Speaker 1: fifth round pick. I think, Tuny I think was a
- 26:13Speaker 1: third round pick. Shack Mason I think was a fourth
- 26:16Speaker 1: round pick, when you was a sixth round pick. These
- 26:18Speaker 1: these are guys that have started games for you in
- 26:21Speaker 1: most cases. I mean when you a little less so
- 26:23Speaker 1: than the other three. But the other three were really successful,
- 26:25Speaker 1: I mean really solid. Mean, Tuny and Mason were as
- 26:28Speaker 1: good starting tandem of guards as there is in the league.
- 26:32Speaker 1: But then you end up like franchise in one and
- 26:36Speaker 1: then giving a long term, big money extension and then
- 26:38Speaker 1: you just you let them walk. I would say, you
- 26:42Speaker 1: let him walk because you're comfortable and confident that you
- 26:45Speaker 1: can replace him with fourth and fifth round picks, and
- 26:47Speaker 1: then you take one in the first round. Like that's
- 26:49Speaker 1: the part that I that I don't like. Yeah, like
- 26:52Speaker 1: Cole Strange, I have no doubt will be a starter
- 26:55Speaker 1: on day one, and he'll be fine. Everybody will tell
- 26:58Speaker 1: me he's Hannah because they picked him in the first round.
- 27:00Speaker 1: He'll be fine. I haven't I don't have a fear
- 27:03Speaker 1: of the Patriots are gonna fall short this year, Mike,
- 27:06Speaker 1: because cold strings just couldn't hold up in the interior.
- 27:09Speaker 1: I guarantee you that I will not be saying that,
- 27:13Speaker 1: But I wouldn't be saying that if he was a
- 27:15Speaker 1: fifth round pick either. Yeah, like we you know, we
- 27:18Speaker 1: fell short. Like can you think of a guard? Think
- 27:22Speaker 1: about over the all of the years, whether it was
- 27:25Speaker 1: Joey and Drusie way back when when it all started,
- 27:28Speaker 1: Mike Compton, um Russ Hochstein, Neil Steven. I'm trying to
- 27:38Speaker 1: sell Ryan Wendel, like, guys, come and go. What are
- 27:43Speaker 1: these guys all have in common? None of them were
- 27:45Speaker 1: drafted in the first round, like they had Logan Mankins.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Everybody says, well, maybe they got another Mankins. Maybe they do.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I love Mankins both personally and professionally. You didn't have
- 27:56Speaker 1: to take a guard in the first round. And I
- 27:58Speaker 1: don't think they took a Alread in that first round.
- 28:01Speaker 1: He was a guy who played all tackle in college
- 28:04Speaker 1: that they moved to guard in the pros. Do you
- 28:06Speaker 1: know what I mean? Yeah, well did they take him
- 28:09Speaker 1: to play guard? I think that they probably had an
- 28:12Speaker 1: idea that he would move to guard, because they didn't
- 28:14Speaker 1: really need, but he could play tackle, as he proved.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Yeah here, you know that was another one you know
- 28:19Speaker 1: on draft night where you know, sometimes you get a
- 28:21Speaker 1: little defensive. I thought the new guy Macro sounded a
- 28:24Speaker 1: little defensive at times on both Friday and Saturday, talking
- 28:28Speaker 1: about the versatility. But he don't want to give me
- 28:31Speaker 1: the numbers. He had like forty four career starts, forty
- 28:33Speaker 1: two of them at left guard. But yeah, because a
- 28:36Speaker 1: guy played a game at tackle doesn't mean he is versatility.
- 28:38Speaker 1: But the other thing he was talking about, and I
- 28:40Speaker 1: think with Strange in mind, was toughness. What and so
- 28:44Speaker 1: the question did we have a problem with toughness? Was
- 28:47Speaker 1: this not up to the toughness that they wanted a
- 28:51Speaker 1: tough team? You gotta draft tough players. That line he had,
- 28:55Speaker 1: which I thought was like kind of odd, Yeah, yeah no,
- 28:58Speaker 1: And I mean just to interject like I'm with you
- 29:00Speaker 1: on this pick, like I had the same reaction, then
- 29:03Speaker 1: I mean, you're right, and I'm not telling you he
- 29:06Speaker 1: can't play Like these people. We got some a SPFWS
- 29:09Speaker 1: and some people are like, well, who were you to
- 29:11Speaker 1: analyze it? Cole Stranger is a guy on everybody's radar.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I am famous. I'll tell you, I'm famous for ignoring
- 29:17Speaker 1: the offensive line, right, I always kind of I poked
- 29:20Speaker 1: fun at myself in the pre draft process. By far
- 29:23Speaker 1: and away the fewest amount of guys I watch and
- 29:25Speaker 1: study or offensive lineman, I saw Cole Strange. Yeah. Yeah,
- 29:30Speaker 1: he was in the top tier of the guys and
- 29:33Speaker 1: according to these draft experts. Yeah right, So it's not
- 29:37Speaker 1: like he's a guy that was just completely off the
- 29:40Speaker 1: radar that no one had ever heard of, which is
- 29:42Speaker 1: what people were trying to do an ASPFW this week,
- 29:44Speaker 1: you know, like, oh, just because you never heard of him,
- 29:46Speaker 1: like I heard of him. Yeah, I mean I heard
- 29:50Speaker 1: of him and I watched some highlights of him in
- 29:53Speaker 1: the pre draft process. Yeah, not that I'm an expert.
- 29:56Speaker 1: I wouldn't. I don't put a grade next to him
- 29:58Speaker 1: and tell you where he's going to go. I just
- 30:00Speaker 1: look at other people. Well, you know, everybody had him
- 30:02Speaker 1: sort of like late day two, maybe even early day three.
- 30:06Speaker 1: It's kind of like Dugger. You know, when a guy
- 30:08Speaker 1: from a smaller school or conference even is on the
- 30:13Speaker 1: second round radar, which is where Strange was and where
- 30:16Speaker 1: Dugger was, and where Dougger was ultimately taken. I think
- 30:20Speaker 1: maybe here they think, okay, he's that good that you know,
- 30:25Speaker 1: he's in the mix, you know, see, But that's my point,
- 30:29Speaker 1: Like no one had a problem with Dugger. Dugger got
- 30:31Speaker 1: taken exactly where everybody thought he was gonna get taken,
- 30:33Speaker 1: right right. Everybody you know, was sort of scratching their
- 30:37Speaker 1: heads about strange because a lot of people had him
- 30:39Speaker 1: in the third or fourth round, but a lot of
- 30:41Speaker 1: people had him in the second round two one with
- 30:43Speaker 1: just one Well he was he was dot com, he
- 30:46Speaker 1: was on the cusp. I think I think most people
- 30:49Speaker 1: had him ranked like seventy. Like if you if you
- 30:52Speaker 1: just stacked the best players on the in the draft,
- 30:55Speaker 1: he was in that low seventies. So let's just out
- 30:58Speaker 1: of the second round. Jard just posted a thing too.
- 31:00Speaker 1: He talked to a team that said they had a
- 31:02Speaker 1: second round grade on him. So yeah, I know there's
- 31:04Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know. You just get into that
- 31:06Speaker 1: stuff and it's like it's another thing. It's another thing
- 31:08Speaker 1: I like too, right, No, no, no no, not with Mike.
- 31:11Speaker 1: But um, sort of the the battling among the media
- 31:17Speaker 1: people that cracks I found somebody, you know, but but
- 31:20Speaker 1: Dard quote talk to six six teams, none of which
- 31:25Speaker 1: had him on the radar. Gasper says, talk to one
- 31:29Speaker 1: personnel guy who said that that's absolutely a good, solid pick.
- 31:31Speaker 1: He was going early second round. Giardi says, talk to
- 31:35Speaker 1: a number of personnel executives. None of them had him
- 31:37Speaker 1: anywhere near the first round. But then but like Mike
- 31:40Speaker 1: just said, because he found one said second So like
- 31:42Speaker 1: I mean seriously, like, well, we're gonna we're gonna kill people. Like, like,
- 31:46Speaker 1: I saw another another one in the mail bag. I
- 31:48Speaker 1: was talking about Jamaine Johnson, right, well, who's grading the graders?
- 31:53Speaker 1: The guy says, because Jammy Johnson fell with Jammy Johnson
- 31:57Speaker 1: went like ten picks later than he was, like project, Yeah,
- 32:00Speaker 1: he dropped in the first round. A lot of people
- 32:01Speaker 1: had him in the top half of the first round.
- 32:04Speaker 1: He went in the bottom half of the first round.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Some people that's not the same as a guy that
- 32:08Speaker 1: got drafted that was supposed to be eighty ninth and
- 32:11Speaker 1: when twenty ninth. Yeah, like there's a big difference there. Yeah.
- 32:14Speaker 1: The question I have about Strange is I don't quite
- 32:19Speaker 1: you know, I'm not a scout. I'm not evaluating the
- 32:22Speaker 1: offensive line play. But the question is was guard that
- 32:27Speaker 1: much of a need position that you had to take
- 32:29Speaker 1: one at that spot, Like like you said before, they
- 32:31Speaker 1: couldn't find a trade partner. They wanted to trade out.
- 32:33Speaker 1: You had to make a pick. Well, it was a need,
- 32:35Speaker 1: but did you not think you could fill it later?
- 32:37Speaker 1: That's my point, That's what I would say. I think
- 32:39Speaker 1: it was that much of a need position they needed
- 32:41Speaker 1: a starter at guard, right. I just think you could
- 32:44Speaker 1: have gotten it in like Jason Hines, like, would you
- 32:47Speaker 1: feel any different? I mean, be honest, no, No, I'm
- 32:50Speaker 1: with you on this pick. I'm with you on the
- 32:51Speaker 1: on the strange like, like, I just feel like if
- 32:54Speaker 1: if they had taken Jermaine Johnson or Trent McDuffie and
- 32:59Speaker 1: then tried to get Strange in the second round, no problem,
- 33:02Speaker 1: and they didn't get them. Yeah, okay, I'll take that instead. Yeah,
- 33:07Speaker 1: and I'll get them on my next pick. Yeah, I catch,
- 33:10Speaker 1: I catch on the next one. Yeah, I'm with you
- 33:12Speaker 1: on that one. But um, you know in two in
- 33:16Speaker 1: two guards. By the way, the Patriots were originally fifty
- 33:19Speaker 1: four before they traded up to fifty, right, there were
- 33:22Speaker 1: two guards that went like fifty six and fifty eight
- 33:25Speaker 1: or something like that one to Tampa. Tampa took one. Yeah,
- 33:29Speaker 1: the Wram Broms were later and the kid, the kid
- 33:32Speaker 1: from LSU went They were right in the right in
- 33:35Speaker 1: the area where the Patriots we're going to pick their sex.
- 33:38Speaker 1: So I think, now maybe you could argue with me.
- 33:41Speaker 1: They thought Strange was far and away superior to the
- 33:43Speaker 1: two guys that went. Get Ecky I think was one
- 33:45Speaker 1: of them, and uh Ingram maybe from LSU. This is
- 33:51Speaker 1: the time of year to forget about you think this
- 33:55Speaker 1: is bad, you think this is bad, Wait till the
- 33:57Speaker 1: season starts. Oh yeah, and I have to look at
- 33:59Speaker 1: What can I say? Do we like him? We like him?
- 34:01Speaker 1: And he's not here anymore to tell me if I
- 34:03Speaker 1: liked him. So it's Mike, you love You loved him
- 34:05Speaker 1: With Mike, I don't have to tell me I didn't
- 34:07Speaker 1: like anybody, because you hate everybody. Yeah. Can I talk
- 34:12Speaker 1: about Sam Roberts a little bit? Sure? Oh yeah, we
- 34:14Speaker 1: haven't mentioned Sam Roberts. I mean, like, I always a
- 34:18Speaker 1: D two guy, but holy crap, you turn on him
- 34:21Speaker 1: and watch him just picking guys up and throwing him.
- 34:23Speaker 1: I don't know if it's going to translate to the NFL.
- 34:27Speaker 1: But he was fun to watch. I mean, he is
- 34:30Speaker 1: just it's kind of like Barmore and I'm very curious.
- 34:34Speaker 1: I like that style of play, get up field, strong guy.
- 34:37Speaker 1: I mean, they're just if you haven't seen yet, people listening, go,
- 34:40Speaker 1: you know, just go watches about a minute of highlights
- 34:42Speaker 1: on Patriots dot com. It's just him picking up offensive
- 34:44Speaker 1: linemen and throwing them into the backfield. Um. But then
- 34:46Speaker 1: a big Patriots fan too, which was kind of cool.
- 34:48Speaker 1: I mean the celebration and all that, and you know,
- 34:50Speaker 1: that's the stuff I try to focus on at this
- 34:53Speaker 1: point while everybody's you know, stumping their feet about it,
- 34:55Speaker 1: and you know, just remembering these are these are kids too,
- 34:58Speaker 1: were excited and living there there dream and oh what
- 35:00Speaker 1: he got a fist pump by Paul Oh who was
- 35:03Speaker 1: at ingram. I had antic but h but I think
- 35:07Speaker 1: he's I mean, look, I wanted more on the front
- 35:09Speaker 1: seven defense defense defense. I was on that page too,
- 35:12Speaker 1: But after watching him, i mean they picked him, was like,
- 35:15Speaker 1: who the hell is that guy? I mean, you know,
- 35:16Speaker 1: not really on anybody's radar, but um, but you can
- 35:19Speaker 1: see what he what he can do. He's a big,
- 35:21Speaker 1: big dude. And he plays plays really strong and tough.
- 35:24Speaker 1: So I'll give you one. I'll give you one funny
- 35:26Speaker 1: one on this. I'm not I'm not going to pretend
- 35:28Speaker 1: to be able to tell you anything about Sam Roberts
- 35:30Speaker 1: from Division two Northwest Missouri State. Um. I heard a
- 35:34Speaker 1: guy over the weekend talking about the draft. You know,
- 35:38Speaker 1: you know that, like like when you always make fun
- 35:40Speaker 1: of me, Freddie Ye draft filling guys, you know, you
- 35:42Speaker 1: always tell what it's some guy goes, you know, and
- 35:45Speaker 1: he blocked He blocked like eight kicks. So I give
- 35:48Speaker 1: you like special teams, Like do you think maybe defensive
- 35:55Speaker 1: tackle that was capable of getting drafted in the NFL.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Maybe that's why he blocks many right in college? Right,
- 36:01Speaker 1: I mean, if you really and it's true and they
- 36:05Speaker 1: say it all the time, if you're if you're coming
- 36:07Speaker 1: from a lower school, you got better be growing dudes
- 36:09Speaker 1: around and dominating, throwing dudes around and dominating. And I
- 36:13Speaker 1: put together a feature on hands poked to his to
- 36:15Speaker 1: his college coach and you know, just said he's you know,
- 36:18Speaker 1: real focused kid, and and you know whatever. That was
- 36:21Speaker 1: one of the three six artists, right, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 36:23Speaker 1: So I no mean, dude throw issues with that take
- 36:27Speaker 1: throw it, throw it dart at a guy that has
- 36:29Speaker 1: obviously some physical attributes. Yeah, you know, what's what's what's
- 36:34Speaker 1: the what's the harm there? Like? Yeah, Zappy. The more
- 36:41Speaker 1: the more I'm reading and it's just one of my
- 36:42Speaker 1: guys too, Yeah, more I'm reading about this. Yeah, the
- 36:45Speaker 1: less I like it, other than the fact that Mike
- 36:47Speaker 1: Ahead usually your business quote it's good business. It is good.
- 36:50Speaker 1: Other than it's good business, take quarterbacks in the middle rounds,
- 36:53Speaker 1: I don't really see what. I don't see all the
- 36:56Speaker 1: Mac well, he was certainly preach numbers in an aread offense.
- 37:01Speaker 1: I didn't get to do my my usual jto Sullivan
- 37:04Speaker 1: QBA QB school plub, but he did do a video
- 37:06Speaker 1: on him which I watched yesterday and against Army and
- 37:09Speaker 1: all seriously up and down, up and down. Have you
- 37:14Speaker 1: have you ever looked into asking jto Sullivan if he's
- 37:18Speaker 1: you know, looking to getting slide you a little slide
- 37:21Speaker 1: a little. I know that's why I got him. I
- 37:25Speaker 1: haven't talked about him in a year since I wrote
- 37:27Speaker 1: the watch with the year two thing with Mac, but uh,
- 37:29Speaker 1: you know it's the scouting reports have him as that
- 37:34Speaker 1: Matt kind of not going to blow you away with
- 37:36Speaker 1: the physical attributes, but but seems to understand where things
- 37:38Speaker 1: are and knows where to go to the bu with
- 37:40Speaker 1: the ball. Um. But I'm watching him. I started reading
- 37:44Speaker 1: about him a little bit, you know, a little bit
- 37:46Speaker 1: slow getting rid of the ball. You know, the decision
- 37:48Speaker 1: making is not always sound, And I'm like, so in
- 37:51Speaker 1: other words, and he's in an air raid offense. So
- 37:54Speaker 1: whenever he just gets the ball and he throws it
- 37:56Speaker 1: right to the guy that he's supposed to throw it to,
- 37:57Speaker 1: everything is fine. And that's what that offense is. That's
- 38:00Speaker 1: old Texas tech offense that Mike Leach had, and really
- 38:04Speaker 1: the only guy who ever amounted to anything as a
- 38:06Speaker 1: quarterback out of that is Mahomes. Like there's a litany
- 38:10Speaker 1: of Cliff Kingsbury's BJ Simons that like just couldn't do
- 38:15Speaker 1: it when they got to the NFL. Yeah, I just
- 38:17Speaker 1: I mean, we know it's I've said it's good business,
- 38:20Speaker 1: but I still just find the reaction so funny. It's like,
- 38:22Speaker 1: who people really can't see what they're doing, Like like
- 38:25Speaker 1: you're talking about like he's going to come in and
- 38:26Speaker 1: compete with They don't like now that was ridiculous. That's
- 38:31Speaker 1: high comedy. I mean some of the people, some of
- 38:34Speaker 1: the people were convinced they don't trust Mac. I see,
- 38:38Speaker 1: I'm kind of in the middle, like, I think it's
- 38:40Speaker 1: ridiculous to say, like, he's here to compete with Mac,
- 38:42Speaker 1: which I did. Mike's right, you know how you always
- 38:45Speaker 1: say who who, Well, Mike hurt him too. The same
- 38:48Speaker 1: people were saying, oh, yeah, I think that's ridiculous to
- 38:50Speaker 1: suggest that he's here to compete with machiculous. But I
- 38:54Speaker 1: also think it's ridiculous to suggest that it doesn't have
- 38:56Speaker 1: anything to do with Mac. I think it does, at
- 39:00Speaker 1: least at least a little bit. I don't. I don't.
- 39:05Speaker 1: I just think they've picked quarterbacks before and you know, yeah, yeah,
- 39:09Speaker 1: we'll see with him. But uh. And then the last
- 39:13Speaker 1: one I think we discussed Kevin Harris. I was kind
- 39:17Speaker 1: of on him too as I dove into him big
- 39:22Speaker 1: kind of stiff. I seems more an early down guy.
- 39:25Speaker 1: But it's an intriguing pick because he had a really
- 39:29Speaker 1: really good year as a sophomore and then had back
- 39:32Speaker 1: surgery um off, an injury that I think he suffered
- 39:36Speaker 1: in the off season in between and he had a
- 39:38Speaker 1: down year last year, which is kind of strange that
- 39:40Speaker 1: he would come out off of that. But my guess
- 39:44Speaker 1: is he's concerned about the back injury, wants to get
- 39:47Speaker 1: in the league for a couple of years before he
- 39:49Speaker 1: watches out. But yeah, I mean he Mike's right. He's
- 39:52Speaker 1: more of a early down kind of threat, great ball security,
- 39:57Speaker 1: only one fumble in his career on almost four hundred
- 40:01Speaker 1: touches altogether, whereas conversely, Pierre Strong had five fumbles last
- 40:06Speaker 1: year as a senior. So yeah, a little bit different.
- 40:11Speaker 1: All right, I'm eager to hear what our listeners have
- 40:14Speaker 1: to say. Five five Pats five hundred is the ace
- 40:17Speaker 1: ticket hut Line web radio at Patriots dot com is
- 40:20Speaker 1: the email address. We'll start with Todd and Greenville. What's up, Todd,
- 40:26Speaker 1: Hope you can hear me good today. I know you
- 40:27Speaker 1: guys had a couple of calls lately, and yet much
- 40:30Speaker 1: better with respect is strange. I really kind of like
- 40:34Speaker 1: his athleticism and his ability to kind of get ahold
- 40:38Speaker 1: of somebody and keep him. But a couple times I've
- 40:40Speaker 1: watched some of his some of his highlights, and he's
- 40:43Speaker 1: standing there in that half croach that a guard has
- 40:45Speaker 1: with his arms spread wide and meanwhile the pockets are
- 40:48Speaker 1: collapsing on his quarterback behind him. He's staring downfield, just
- 40:51Speaker 1: standing there like, oh, that's not so good. And with Thornton,
- 40:55Speaker 1: I think Paul already mentioned it, there's some issue with
- 40:58Speaker 1: him getting off the press coverage because I watched the game.
- 41:00Speaker 1: I think they're playing Kansas and he just couldn't I
- 41:05Speaker 1: couldn't get if they pressed him right on the line,
- 41:07Speaker 1: he couldn't get free. But he did go down blocking.
- 41:10Speaker 1: I watched him on a lot of the plays they
- 41:12Speaker 1: had the whole game, his highlights and every time they're
- 41:14Speaker 1: on the ball, he was out there blocking. He was
- 41:16Speaker 1: throwing his body up. So my question is how much
- 41:19Speaker 1: coaching can you do with these guys to get them
- 41:22Speaker 1: so that they don't make these kind of mistakes and
- 41:24Speaker 1: get them going. Because who's our receivers coach? I don't
- 41:26Speaker 1: even know right now. And I know we're kind of
- 41:29Speaker 1: an old line coach by committee, aren't we at this time?
- 41:32Speaker 1: Old line? I think, well, we think we think that's
- 41:36Speaker 1: gonna be mattat wise that I think, yeah, but we
- 41:39Speaker 1: don't know. We're not sure. We're not sure, um wide receiving.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Who is the wide receivers coach. I don't know Imbart,
- 41:49Speaker 1: but he's gone right, Yeah, maybe Troy, Maybe Troy. And
- 41:56Speaker 1: I thought Troy was gonna be with running backs. But
- 41:58Speaker 1: I'll go back to you. Last year he was running,
- 42:01Speaker 1: wasn't he. Yeah, I think he was. The first year
- 42:03Speaker 1: he was running back, he was the assistant running back.
- 42:05Speaker 1: This year he was with the receivers with with milk Uh.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Troy Brown was wide receivers and kick returners last year,
- 42:11Speaker 1: So he'll probably do the coach. Yeah, I mean, I
- 42:14Speaker 1: just answer your question about Strange. I think I mean
- 42:16Speaker 1: a competent all offensive line coach. I think that's a
- 42:19Speaker 1: big part of technique and the jump, and I think
- 42:22Speaker 1: that that's something that that you know, he'll he'll make
- 42:24Speaker 1: strides with that. That's NFL level coaching offensive line thing.
- 42:28Speaker 1: The last thing is I want to walk Deuce in
- 42:30Speaker 1: a room with Chris Sheim and just let them go
- 42:32Speaker 1: over this draft together. Shut Oh Shim is the one
- 42:37Speaker 1: with Handy that they do the off day podcast. Go
- 42:39Speaker 1: and get your shine box? Oh yeah? Why is he
- 42:42Speaker 1: is he worst draft of all time? Is that? I
- 42:46Speaker 1: think he thinks that Hello I think we lost last ye. Anyway,
- 42:56Speaker 1: the another buzzword that I was kind of chuckling at
- 43:00Speaker 1: his you know, you know Cole Strange, you know makes sense,
- 43:04Speaker 1: really good pick you gotta protect mac And then you
- 43:06Speaker 1: read about him like the one thing that he doesn't
- 43:08Speaker 1: do great is pass protect Like oh great, because it
- 43:12Speaker 1: does seem like Strange is one of these like really
- 43:16Speaker 1: super all around, like checks all the boxes like great guy, leader,
- 43:22Speaker 1: you know, good personality, loves football, you know, has good
- 43:28Speaker 1: athleticism for the position, and you hear all a lot
- 43:30Speaker 1: of good things about him, but the one thing that
- 43:32Speaker 1: you have heard in a negative is pass protection he's
- 43:36Speaker 1: not really Yeah, although Polish isn't there at a stat
- 43:40Speaker 1: like he's only given up one sack in three years
- 43:43Speaker 1: or something like that. Who who does those well? I
- 43:47Speaker 1: don't know the analytics people, but in Todd's watching the
- 43:50Speaker 1: game where he's standing around as his quarterbacks getting killed
- 43:53Speaker 1: but not blocking anybody, I don't know. Yeah, I like,
- 43:56Speaker 1: how do you judge whether or not a guy's good
- 43:58Speaker 1: at pass protection if he loses his one on one battle,
- 44:02Speaker 1: like it doesn't always result in a sack. Yeah, you
- 44:04Speaker 1: can make a defendive judgment just by those two clips
- 44:06Speaker 1: of him losing to Travis Jones. You see it found
- 44:10Speaker 1: the two clips, about two clips there they are. Let's
- 44:16Speaker 1: pass it around. Tavish Jones should have gone in the
- 44:19Speaker 1: top ten, by the way, because look what he did
- 44:20Speaker 1: to Curtis Strange. Oh is that going to be a thing.
- 44:25Speaker 1: One thing though, on Strange, I did retweet his coach
- 44:27Speaker 1: put out a video last night that I thought was great,
- 44:29Speaker 1: just talking about I mean almost just how grateful they
- 44:32Speaker 1: were to have him at the program and just what
- 44:34Speaker 1: a professional he was constantly and every single thing that
- 44:36Speaker 1: he did, and he just goes right down the list
- 44:38Speaker 1: of what a professional he was and approached every day
- 44:41Speaker 1: the same and he never slipped once. I thought it
- 44:42Speaker 1: was great. It was like having another coach there. Wow,
- 44:45Speaker 1: I don't go that far. Six years. Let's go to
- 44:50Speaker 1: only the Patriots could draft ten guys and not get younger.
- 44:52Speaker 1: We should have known. We should have known that this
- 44:54Speaker 1: was going to be the pick too, because remember mac
- 44:56Speaker 1: Ro and his pre draft press conference talking about a
- 44:59Speaker 1: lot of these guys, guys have played like six years
- 45:01Speaker 1: of college football. Hint hint, wink wink. Yeah, you should
- 45:04Speaker 1: have seen it coming. I mean there were a lot
- 45:06Speaker 1: of hints that Bill at the draft party about the trades. Yeah,
- 45:11Speaker 1: right about that, you know speed Now, yeah, let's go
- 45:15Speaker 1: to christ I wonder if Bill was talking about the
- 45:17Speaker 1: trades of players. Oh, I don't know, because that to
- 45:20Speaker 1: me was like I didn't think there was like an
- 45:22Speaker 1: inordinate amount of trades with draft picks. But Hollywood Brown
- 45:27Speaker 1: in a J. Brown that that was the first round.
- 45:30Speaker 1: Let's go to Chris with a T I A n. Hey, Christian, Hey, guys,
- 45:35Speaker 1: what's going on? How's it going good? You are right,
- 45:37Speaker 1: you'd sound a little down. Do you want me to
- 45:39Speaker 1: call the priest? No? Maybe a couple of weeks ago,
- 45:43Speaker 1: but I've had like a sinus inspection like the past
- 45:46Speaker 1: three weeks. I'm just starting to feel a little bit
- 45:48Speaker 1: it's time to suck it up a little bit. Yeah, alright, alright,
- 45:55Speaker 1: I was being sarcastic. I've been coughing on an air
- 45:57Speaker 1: for like three weeks. Said, I know, I know, That's
- 46:00Speaker 1: why I said it. You got it from Paul obviously
- 46:03Speaker 1: listening to the show. Infect in my air, and what
- 46:06Speaker 1: do you want? I mean? You know, I you know
- 46:10Speaker 1: I was you know, I knew we were in trouble
- 46:13Speaker 1: when it was the first fifteen minutes of the show
- 46:15Speaker 1: was dead air, and then it was followed by fifteen
- 46:18Speaker 1: minutes of fifty talking, which I wish was dead air.
- 46:20Speaker 1: At the topic for another day. I mean, much like
- 46:25Speaker 1: the Patriots draft. I know he does stuff with him
- 46:27Speaker 1: and everything, but he just I just I don't understand
- 46:29Speaker 1: the fascination cli um. But I you know, I think,
- 46:33Speaker 1: like for me, when you look at the draft, the
- 46:36Speaker 1: maddening thing. Uh you know, look, they got speed, great,
- 46:41Speaker 1: been jumping up and down for years that they needed
- 46:43Speaker 1: to get speed. Um, where a guy gets picked, and
- 46:47Speaker 1: how everybody takes their pants off when they trade the
- 46:50Speaker 1: ninety fourth pick and they get a twenty twenty three
- 46:53Speaker 1: third round pick and it's great value And it's just
- 46:55Speaker 1: that and the other thing drives me up a wall.
- 46:58Speaker 1: I feel like people are more or upset about where
- 47:02Speaker 1: a player was picked rather than the player that was picked.
- 47:05Speaker 1: If that makes any sense. Um, yeah, it does. Mean
- 47:09Speaker 1: it's just it's just maddening. And I just want the
- 47:12Speaker 1: team to get better obviously like everybody else. And and
- 47:16Speaker 1: and they addressed speed, which was great. Let's see if
- 47:18Speaker 1: these guys can play. I'm absolutely stunned that they didn't
- 47:22Speaker 1: take somebody in the front seven until the sixth round.
- 47:26Speaker 1: I'm blown away by that, Like I you know, Paul,
- 47:29Speaker 1: you had the article over the weekend about the linebackers. Boy,
- 47:33Speaker 1: you're putting a lot of eggs and those and those
- 47:36Speaker 1: baskets that those guys can play. And with the exception
- 47:41Speaker 1: of Ucha, who's you know, flashed and that's being kind,
- 47:46Speaker 1: the rest of them have done nothing. No, no, no,
- 47:51Speaker 1: we don't know. So. Um, we've been killing them for
- 47:54Speaker 1: their previous drafts. Maybe this is the air that that
- 47:58Speaker 1: that you know, they gets fruit. What the perkins the world? Yeah,
- 48:05Speaker 1: I was listening to Ted Johnson a little bit and
- 48:07Speaker 1: Ted Johnson is he's pretty high in the draft by
- 48:10Speaker 1: the way, um for what reason? Did well. One of
- 48:14Speaker 1: the things he was talking about was the linebackers. Not
- 48:17Speaker 1: necessarily he said, you know that that style that Dante
- 48:20Speaker 1: high Tower, Brandon Spike's kind of profile is really sort
- 48:25Speaker 1: of on the back burner in the league. And he
- 48:27Speaker 1: thinks that the way that that it's going, you know,
- 48:31Speaker 1: you have the extra safeties to sort of fill that
- 48:33Speaker 1: that kind of role. And you know that's I think
- 48:36Speaker 1: what he's expecting. The Patriots to do less so than
- 48:39Speaker 1: the Ouches and the Jennings and the perkins Is of
- 48:41Speaker 1: the world. I think he's pointing to Pepper's Dugger Phillips
- 48:45Speaker 1: and you know, some combination of that sort of rotating around.
- 48:49Speaker 1: You know, he also talked about mac Wilson, But I
- 48:53Speaker 1: don't know, it's it's it's not the dumbest thing I've heard.
- 48:55Speaker 1: It's a it's a chance that it could get down
- 48:57Speaker 1: that way. Now, well, look at what they do, not
- 48:59Speaker 1: what they say. And they didn't take anybody in the
- 49:01Speaker 1: front seven. And I think I'm going to predict. I
- 49:04Speaker 1: bet they sign like a Trey Flowers or a veteran
- 49:07Speaker 1: edge guy. Now they still I think, I think that's
- 49:10Speaker 1: got to be in the cards. And then I think
- 49:12Speaker 1: Paul's right, like we're gonna roll the dice with this
- 49:14Speaker 1: line group and all that. That's fine, but there's just edge.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Who's who's playing on the edge of the defense. That's
- 49:19Speaker 1: that's my concern. And you know, it just the same.
- 49:21Speaker 1: It's the same group up front. It's the same group
- 49:23Speaker 1: up front the end of the last year. And I
- 49:24Speaker 1: think if you want to try to cover up for
- 49:27Speaker 1: a secondary that you really didn't address, then you might
- 49:29Speaker 1: want to try to get some pressure on the passer.
- 49:31Speaker 1: And Mike has been talking about this. Who else besides
- 49:34Speaker 1: Judah yep? You know, where do you get that pressure?
- 49:37Speaker 1: Where do you get an edge guy? You know? And
- 49:39Speaker 1: I'll due respect to Tray Flowers, He's not really that guy, no,
- 49:43Speaker 1: but it would at least some it would be a
- 49:45Speaker 1: guy that I feel like, goold, oh no, he I
- 49:47Speaker 1: think I think he'd be he'd be a starter, but
- 49:50Speaker 1: I mean I just don't. I don't look at him
- 49:52Speaker 1: as like a pure pass rusher, no impact the pocket.
- 49:56Speaker 1: But hey, I'll just take somebody who can at least
- 49:57Speaker 1: stop the run too, because that, I mean, that might
- 49:59Speaker 1: almost be the bigger concerns because I'm happy to stick
- 50:02Speaker 1: oocha out there, and you know, one third down, Ronnie Perkins,
- 50:04Speaker 1: I mean, he's got to give you something at some point,
- 50:06Speaker 1: so you know, at least on third downs or you know,
- 50:09Speaker 1: pure passing downs. I feel like you have some guys
- 50:11Speaker 1: you can throw out there to try to get some pressure.
- 50:12Speaker 1: But you know, it's just the down to down tough guys.
- 50:15Speaker 1: It's it's it's hard to see a three down lineup.
- 50:18Speaker 1: It feels like we're kind of heading towards It's gonna
- 50:20Speaker 1: be like mass changes on the field depending on what
- 50:22Speaker 1: the situation is. Which haven't you know, produced great results lately?
- 50:26Speaker 1: This thought to be interesting. Eldred's in North Carolina. What's up?
- 50:30Speaker 1: Here's the true lip mission? Yeah, I know, I know.
- 50:31Speaker 1: I've been waiting. I've been waiting three days for this call, Eldred.
- 50:36Speaker 1: I've been waiting for I've been waiting for you. We
- 50:37Speaker 1: were talking about you on the draft show. We want
- 50:39Speaker 1: to there. It is like I said before, mister Kraft,
- 50:45Speaker 1: you don't have to pay let me draft one damn year.
- 50:47Speaker 1: One year. You ain't gotta pay one year because I
- 50:52Speaker 1: know we need a guard ten receiver. Stand it. But
- 50:54Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm like, oh, I can't get one in fourth,
- 50:57Speaker 1: fifth round. You know, you hit McCrary head, Gordonston, I
- 51:02Speaker 1: did unique cornerback help. But you get five eighty five
- 51:05Speaker 1: nine guys in the sixth round that can run. But
- 51:08Speaker 1: I can't see them covering six one, six two receivers
- 51:10Speaker 1: or sixty three they might be. They might can run
- 51:12Speaker 1: with him, but they can't jump with him, you know,
- 51:15Speaker 1: So I just can't understand that. Thorton, Yes, I didn't
- 51:20Speaker 1: like that pick at all. Oh, come on, why he's
- 51:23Speaker 1: your guy, he's one of your guys. Yeah, he's six
- 51:26Speaker 1: two with speed, but he can't get off pressed. I
- 51:29Speaker 1: watch college football. I am a Patriot, Flay, I am
- 51:33Speaker 1: a Patriot Fay by heart. But I watched football college
- 51:36Speaker 1: and pro and I'm like Durham. We can't get nobody
- 51:40Speaker 1: like that. We can't, you know, And I'm just frustrated,
- 51:43Speaker 1: Like it's not been first rates for years because you know,
- 51:45Speaker 1: I've been calling Bill out for years on GM, you know,
- 51:48Speaker 1: just some thing. But last year was a better draft
- 51:51Speaker 1: than this year. I know. If he could did last
- 51:53Speaker 1: yea all over again, I'd be I'd be giving him all.
- 51:56Speaker 1: But I keep in a crown. They go king Bill,
- 51:59Speaker 1: But you didn't do that this year. Yeah, you don't see.
- 52:02Speaker 1: I mean like, if if Thornton can play, if Strange
- 52:05Speaker 1: can play, and one of the cornerbacks can play, it's
- 52:08Speaker 1: a good draft, okay, Fred, Yeah, wouldn't you rather half
- 52:12Speaker 1: Booth or the Clary in the first round? Listen to No,
- 52:21Speaker 1: definitely short too, but you could run. But like I said,
- 52:24Speaker 1: I just have Look, I'm on record, I want a defense,
- 52:28Speaker 1: you know, early and often. Yeah, well that's what I'm saying.
- 52:31Speaker 1: You know, but you got a guard right if you
- 52:33Speaker 1: could have gotten the third fourth round, Because, like I said,
- 52:36Speaker 1: I watched draft boards too. I said, I'm all right,
- 52:40Speaker 1: sports fan all a round, I'm just not well whatever whatever, No,
- 52:45Speaker 1: I watch all that, and Paul, you're right, SEC and
- 52:49Speaker 1: ACC is a whole lot better than top Big ten
- 52:51Speaker 1: and twelve because they're better competition and they're playing simber
- 52:55Speaker 1: like BRO. So I know you can't keep going to
- 52:58Speaker 1: the well out of all the time. But some of
- 53:00Speaker 1: those players, you know that was there, you just didn't
- 53:02Speaker 1: get them. Yeah, you just didn't get them. Yeah, you
- 53:06Speaker 1: know you picked somebody there what you think your boy is?
- 53:09Speaker 1: And I said, I would look at the epool because
- 53:11Speaker 1: he needed to go back find with somebody else bool
- 53:13Speaker 1: and watch them. I think it would be so fascinating
- 53:15Speaker 1: to really know what's going on and what they're saying
- 53:19Speaker 1: and why they do what they do. Well. I like,
- 53:23Speaker 1: I think to Eldrid's point, thanks Eldred, those four receivers
- 53:26Speaker 1: that went right after Thornton. You know, I think you
- 53:31Speaker 1: know a lot of people were in love with sky More. Okay,
- 53:35Speaker 1: I think he's good I wasn't one of the ones
- 53:37Speaker 1: that was in love with him. I did like Pickens,
- 53:40Speaker 1: so I liked more. I liked Pickens. I didn't like
- 53:44Speaker 1: Fred's guy, who I think was one of those guys,
- 53:46Speaker 1: Alec Pierce. Yeah, I like him. I didn't like him
- 53:49Speaker 1: as much as Fred does. M But that's that's the
- 53:53Speaker 1: referendum you're gonna be. You know, in two years, you're
- 53:56Speaker 1: gonna look at those guys and if that's McLaurin, Jay
- 54:00Speaker 1: Brown and Deebo, Samuel and you, a guy is another
- 54:05Speaker 1: nikkil Harry, only all be in a much different style. Yeah, yeah,
- 54:10Speaker 1: definitely different style. All right, we'll take a break when
- 54:13Speaker 1: we come back. More calls and emails here on Patriots Unfiltered.

- 1:03:23Speaker 1: latest episode of Pats from the Past with gerardmeyo, did
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: you have any inkling that the Patriots were interested in you?
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: I had a little inkling because so funny story. I
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: wasn't even coming here on a thirty visit initially, and
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: I was on my way to another team. I won't
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: say the name of the team, but it's a huge rival.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: They were Green. But I was on the way. I
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: was on the way rhymes of mets. I was on
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: the way out there, and the Patriots called and said, hey,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: you know, Kenny swing through here before, you know, just
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: real quick, before he goes in New York. And I
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: ended up coming here, spending a lot of time with
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: Matt Patricia and Dean Pas at the time, and then
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: I was gone And it was just that quick, you know,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: it was that quick and I went to New York
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: and the rest was history. That was the only thing
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: because when I went at the Combine, this is the weirdest,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: weirdest Combine interview for me that I had. I had
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: a lot of them as well, coming out as an underclassman.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: But I went in the room and you know, everyone's
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: in there. Bill wasn't in there, I don't believe, but
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: no one said anything. So I go in the room.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Remember how you know the interview process works at the Combine, Well,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: I've heard a little bit about it. Like that, you
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: know there's a blowcorn go dropping the hallway to a
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: mad dash with everybody that's going to everybody's room, that's right.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: And you get in there and there's a clock. You're
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: on the clock on the clock, that's right. And so
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: I go. I go into the Patriots. So you know
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: this is right before, this is right after the Giants
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: just won the Super Bowl. So I go. I visit
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: with the Giants. They're having a party because they knew
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: they weren't supposed to win that game either, right, So
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: like I go in their room and everyone's like dancing,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: like a whole bunch of laughing and things like that.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: And then I go to the Patriots room and it's
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: like stone cold, like silence for two minutes. Now, if
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: you ever, if you ever, just like set your clock
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: to two minutes and don't say a word. It is
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: a long time. It should comfortable. Or do a plank,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: do a plank for two minutes, like it is a
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: very long time. Yeah, and no one, like you said,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: we're on the clock. So I'm sitting there like I
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: just introduced myself and then no one asked me any questions,
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: and so I'm like, all right, this is kind of weird.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: And then finally we got into football. But I didn't
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: know if they were trying to figure out, like, you know,
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: what I was thinking, or you know, see how I
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: dealt with uncomfortable situations. But that I mean, I really
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: didn't have like, all right, the Patriots are really looking
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: at me. I thought I was going to go to
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Denver Detroit, you know, the teams like that. So all right,
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: that's a little snippet of Patch from the past, the
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: celebrated podcast series with Gerard Mayo and uh, you know
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: you heard a little bit something behind the scenes. No
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: one improved. Yeah, a PRIB with Paul P. P Parillo.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: But you'll find out the origin of Girard Belichick, his
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: unusual role, and how he handled his rookie season, seventh
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: time captain, thoughts on leadership, and his frustrations on the
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: loss in Super Bowl forty six. Oh I want to
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: hear that part. Yeah, well so, yeah, that's a that's
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: a great series because it's an expanded interview. It's not
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: like ten minutes, you know, you get like forty five
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: minutes to an hour sometimes with the player. And he
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: was good, he did a good They open up. Yeah,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: nothing on the modern current situation, just all his past
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: and everything. Um yeah, mostly on his past. It's not
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Pats from the present, right in the past. Thanks thanks Eric. Yeah,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: he was one that I feel like was tipped a
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: little bit before they selected him, Like all of a sudden,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: I remember somebody being like, keep an eye on the Patriots,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: Jerod Mayo. Guess who had Guess who had it? Charlie Castle,
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: Charlie Cass. Yeah, I thought that's who it was. It
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: was more wrong than Charlie Castle. And that's wait, that's
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: what Matt and I said. That's not that time. He
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: was right, not that time. Yeah, now he was there
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: was a right, right edition at the right time, and
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: I mean Gerard Mayo. Um, he was a solid, solid player,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: and the problem was the knee. And I remember he
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: was on a roll. I thought he was playing his
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: best football and it was in Buffalo and he he
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: stoned a guy and his knee just gave out, and
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: like that was it. I had almost forgotten he was
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: on the team in twenty fourteen, that he was initially
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: you know, part of the mix with with those guys
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: that was I don't know, I just I mean he
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: had I forget was that one of the back to
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: back years where he had got injured in Week six
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: and was kind of done for the rest of the year.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: One year was like a he got hurt a couple
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: of years or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah, And I forgot
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: what it was the next year, right, and he talked
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: about it because it was a little, uh, you know, bittersweet.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: I think it was the way Matt put it to him,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: and it was now he was a big part of that,
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: like he I don't know if you guys remember, but
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: he would travel when he was hurt, um, and he
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: was in the meetings and like you know, you could
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: clearly see where the the the origin of his coaching
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: career took place right there, Billy Bill. Yeah, and Bill
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: wanted that that was why they called him Gerard Belichick,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: right right right? All right, So let's patch from the past.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: Check that out that podcast you've had, I don't know,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: like over twenty now, I think, um with four thirty
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: Wow yeah, um former Patriots? Good stuff, good stuff. Um.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: All right, let's get back to the callers in emailers
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: eight five five past five hundred disease take a hotline
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: web radio at Patriots dot com is the email address.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: Patty and agawams on the line. What's up, Patty tub gentlemen, Hey, hey,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: so do stole a little bit of my thunder bringing
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: up trade bout. I was gonna ask if you guys
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: thought that they wouldn't realistically take a flyer on him.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: But I think we do need another guy because let's
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: just say, best case scenario, Ronnie Perkin works out and
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: he's a good player. Really behind him, dudon in in Barnmor,
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: who do you have that can go after the passer?
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: I mean, we got honestly no depth as far as
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: guys that can get after the quarterback. Dah I mean,
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: you're you're putting it all on Perkins, Uche and Judeon
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: and Barmore, right now. I mean, that's that's that's it,
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: you know, it's it's my biggest concern of the team.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: I think they've I mean, and I think when you
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: just throw out draft value and all that stuff, you
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: look at the offense. They've added a lot of pieces
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: to the offense. I think they needed to add and
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: I think that they'll they should, they should improve around Mac.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: I think they've given him stuff. But it's another story
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: on the defensive side of the ball and what the
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: approaches and you talk about Gerameo, Steve Belichick. I think
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: a lot of pressure on those guys to sort out
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: these pieces and put together a defense that you know,
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: can improve on what we saw from them last time.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Thanks Patty. Um Let's go to Rashad in Baltimore. What's up, Rashad? Hey?
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: What's up? What's up? Hey? Um E see, I guess
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: I can. I guess I can talk about the draft.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: That's really that's really I guess the main thing. My
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: main thing is it is not is not the it's
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: not the player you pick, it's just where you pick them.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: In the value. That's that's thing like and it is
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: I'm not gonna be I'm not gonna be mad at
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: cold tra like the like the my main like the
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: one thing I will say about Cold Strings from a
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: fan point, I'll buy his jersey if he has that.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: I'm a sixty nine because that's like the best thing
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: of the draft. But but but Markets, I like the
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Market Jones and I like the I like the Markets
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: Jones pick just because I mean, if he can help
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: from a special team standpoint and defensive standpoint, that's a
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: double plus. And I know that's something that Bill would
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: like so and he might be able to get in
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: some offensive steps too, So I'm like, you know, I
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: like that pick. I like I like the late offensive
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: line pick. I think chasing Chasing Hines. I'm thinking of
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: all the linement that we got, he probably gonna be
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: the one that was going to be the best one.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: It's gonna beat out Strange probably. Yeah. All right, Rachean,
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: thanks for the call. Let's go to us being Fresno.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: What's up, Speed, great job on the draft. Stows as always, guys,
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Um you like you make life more fun. I especially
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: enjoy apoplectic Mike like bemoaning how deeply misunderstood he is.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: Good business. Um I got, I got a question from
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: Mike and a question for Paul. From from Mike, it
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: sounds like you begun your a scent of Mount Thornton.
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: Um like, is that like maybe what Thornton's feeling could
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: be a Brandon Cook type receiver. Yeah? Yeah, I mean
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: I think they're different body types, for sure. I mean
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: Thornton's you know, close to six three m. But but
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: I think that's the role. It's it's outside receiver, you know,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: and that would be stretched a home run. Have you
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: got Cooks a guy with that production? Oh, for sure
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: Thornton ends up being Cooks. Bill was right. Yeah, But
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: I'm just you know, I got reasonable to hope for.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: I don't think, I don't know. I mean, I'm trying
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: not to set expectations. All I know is that the
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: guy can fly, and that's something that's gonna show up
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: on the field day one, and I just think that's
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: something new and exciting to see. Don't forget the drawing.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: A defensive passive appearance is as good as a catch.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: I know. Oh believe I know that one boy. Yeah,
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: that's the Brandon Cook's way. That's right. Hey, hey, paul Um,
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: you know when that guy Manny called and he forced
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: me to defend how you talking about Bill the mediocre comment? Yeah,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: obviously you're firmly on the record saying that Bill is
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: the best ever. It was just it was in your
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: response to Manny. It was there was this interesting point
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: you brought up with Andy Reid that got me thinking,
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: where it's like you would kind of say, maybe Andy Reid,
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: you should you could, you could say he's got the
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: edge over Bill without a great quarterback, but maybe the
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: reverse Bill being better with a great quarterback again. Yeah,
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: And I thought that was really it was really it
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: was a little bit dizzying at the time. So I
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: kind of sympathized with why many seemed a little bit
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: thumped on the line. But but I kind of I
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: just kind of wonder, in the in a vacuum, is
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: a better coach one who makes it work better without? Yeah,
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: and that I wasn't making an argument for or against
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: Bill or Andy Reid specifically. I was first and foremost
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: I would saying, like I had never said that Bill
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: is a mediocre coach, like flat out he is just
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: he is just a mediocre coach. I'm sorry. The day
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: before you said Bill's record without Brady with media, you
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: didn't correct coaching correct and you also, although later Paul
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: you did kind of snarkily called Bill competent because he's
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: eight games underive chuckle, you know, without without Brady. Yes, like,
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: I mean that those are the numbered I mean, that's
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: that's what the facts say. Now, I also have been
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: a part. I mean, I can't really comment being up
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: close in Cleveland, but I've been a part of everything
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: he's done as a Patriots coach, and I would say
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: that for the most part, I think they've won more
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: games than their talent really shouldn't, you know, suggested without Brady.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: You know, so, I think that they're doing well to
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: be sort of middling based on the talents in twenty twenty,
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: like seven and nine based on the talent in twenty
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: twenty um the only the Castle year they were stacked
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: that I mean, that was a loaded roster, So like
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: that to me. But yeah, three and one without Brady
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: in sixteen, ten and seven last year with Mack, Like,
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not telling you that he had his
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: best year of coaching, but I think it's pretty apparent
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: that he's a good coach, you know. I mean I
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: think I don't know if yeah, I don't know if
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: I should call him the greatest ever now because you
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: got me thinking about Reid in a vacuum, you know,
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: without the what he's doing with mccab or without Smith. Yeah,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: but how many times have we looked at read just
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: before my home and said, oh, they should have won
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: that game, and he you know, two minute two minute coaching?
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: That was this whole thing. Can you think of one?
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: I remember many times people saying that, you know, yeah,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: I don't remember a game, but that's just all right, thanks.
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: I think clark management is one of his weaknesses, without question.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: But I can't think of like he's got the better
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: team and he lost because he couldn't manage the clock.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: I think clock management is an issue for for Randy Reid.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: I think it's an an issue for the Patriots. Quite frankly,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: there was that Kansas City game, remember when Peterson was
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: the offensive coordinator, right, and Peterson said was it was yeah, yeah,
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: And he said we didn't want to get the ball
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: back to Brady, which was by far and away the
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: dumbest thing I've ever heard of coach say after a game.
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: I remember that playoff game here the Patriots won twenty
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: seven twenty in a divisional round fifteen ishues, somewhere in
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: that in that general area, and UM, the Chiefs went
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: on a drive with about eight minutes to go, and
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: they weren't hurrying. They weren't like nowhere out of bounds.
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: There was no urgency at all. And they scored but
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: kind of left themselves in a situation where everything had
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: to go perfect for them in order for them to
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: have a chance to come back. And he said that
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: we didn't want to give Brady the ball back. You
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: were down fourteen guy, hot tub Bob writes in UM
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: in twenty one years, this is the first Patriots theme
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: based draft. The front office went all Al Davis and
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: just went with speed, baby. But instead of getting the
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: fastest safety, linebacker or cornerback, we got the fastest guard.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: The fastest guard. Have you ever watched a game and said, WHOA,
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: look at that lightning quick guard that s SOB can
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: really move. Given the amount of value we surrendered in
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: this theme draft, the only way we're pulling this draft
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: into the wind column is one Cole Strange is athletic
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: enough to move to tackle and be good at that.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: Two Thornton is at minimum a wide receiver. Two three.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: One of these two corners hits. In four, one of
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: these late round guys not named Zappy becomes a meaningful contributor.
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: Why why does it have to be not named Zappy?
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: What if he hits, then then you gotta gold mine
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: on you, right, thanks for being the best Patriots podcast
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: in history. Well, I gotta I gotta hypothetical. I just hypothetical.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: It's almost like a game. You know how much I
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: like games. What if Cole Strange is a left tackle?
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: What if and when is the left guard? I don't
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: care about. I heard I heard a guy call in
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: last week saying He's gonna play right tackle, Trent Brown's
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: gonna play left tackle, and Win's gonna move into guard.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: I mean to which Now I really despise the whole thing.
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: So now you're gonna play a guy in a position
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: he's never played before. When no, Cole Cole, Yeah, it
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: would change, It would change I think some of the
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: If he turns out to be a really good tackle,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: it would definitely change my perspective. I mean, I'm I'm
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: not stupid, No, I mean, and he hasn't done it,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: and there's no reason to really think that he will.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: But it's just interesting of It's it's like cornerback to safety.
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: You see that, but you don't see a lot of
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: safeties go to cornerback. It's the same with garden tackle
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: and that's the opposite of Mankins. But I mean not
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: only that he never played it right, like it'd be
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: one like Logan. Mankins played tackle in college and a
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: lot of people thought he would be a guard in
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: the pros. So if he wound up playing guarden for
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: a couple of years and then kicked back out to tackle,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: that happens. This guy never played tackle before he played
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: one game at tackle. Yeah. But if if Mike's hypothetical
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: proves correct and he turns out to be a really
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: good and I'm not even saying like a like an
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: All Pro, just a really good starting caliber tackle, yeah,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: I changed my opinion on the pick. I means something
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: that if Bill did this with that thought in mind,
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: so we see it like, come come the summer, he's
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: playing tackle. Yeah, I think I'll think differently about the
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: pick because I still think I mean as much as
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: I mean Stuber for a seventh rounder I think has
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: some upside, but there's just not I don't really love
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: Justin harn as a left tackle. I think ends at
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: the end of his deal. I think that that's still
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: a big position. I mean, we'll have to keep an
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: eye on it. I mean even in the spring with
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: the OTAs in mini camp. You know, often they start
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: trying guys and I know there's no hitting, but just
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: to see how they look in the position, and if
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: we see him out there, then well, well, you know, okay,
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: they're thinking that too. I mean, I don't think his
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: size is ideal. He's six o four seven three h
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: seven yea almost six five, but he's still but he's
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: still a couple inches bigger than Isaiah win Is. And
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: his athleticism would seem like even if his size was
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: a detriment to saying you could play tackle, I think
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: athletically you could say he potentially could handle being on
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: that side getting out. I mean, that's what you know
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: you need as a hold on hope. Please, I wouldn't please.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: You don't have to tell me because I wouldn't know
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: the thirty three I wouldn't know the proper wings kind
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: of the thirty four plus you're you're big, so he's
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: thirty three. It's not not ideal, but I'm sure that
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: Isaiah win. But I think Mike brings up an interesting
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: point if that's there, if that's Bill's thought process, like this,
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: this kid can play tackle? Yeah, no, he has to
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: be right right. I heard it here first, Okay, Gary
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: and east Han over to Jersey. I just hope and pray.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: I don't see Jermaine Johnson sacking Matt Jones twice a
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: year for the next decade. I thought he'd be perfect
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: pick at number twenty one. My trust in Bill's faith
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: is taking a hit with this draft. Thanks for the
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: great shows. Do you think if they took Jimmy Johnson
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: people would have said, well, they must not have liked
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: them that much because they didn't trade up to get him.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: You see, it's it's it's really not he doesn't do it.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: It's just not him. He's too happy. Yeah, this is
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: not a good look. I can't. I can't. I throw
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: the grenade and then I laugh and let me ask you,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: this isn't one I did play, but you because you
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: really wanted an edge guy. Yeah, you'd feel better if
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: I took Johnson, And I know that you you're not
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: in love with a strange pick, so I'm not not
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: saying yeah, no, I would. It would have made It
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: would have made a lot of sense to me, because
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: I think he has, you know, three down potential off
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: the edge. I think it would make I think it
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: would make sense. I would have been happy. Philippe is
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: in Rio de Janeiro. I'm very disappointed with our draft
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: and would like your opinion on a few things. One,
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: how much stock do you put on the overdraft in
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: reach ideas? Personally, I think there is merit in it
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: and that we could have had a better draft with
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: our draft capital. The GM's job, in my opinion, is
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: not only to pick the best player available, but to
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: maximize talent acquisition. Two do you agree that Bill put
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: a target on his back after this very very unusual,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: to say the least draft. And Three, to address Mike's point,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: I don't think fans were necessarily after speed wide receiver.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: We just want good all around receivers. Apparently Thornton is
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: yet another role player. I hope I'm wrong, but this
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: is how I see it. Yeah, I just hope that.
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: I mean, we can't do anything about it. Now they
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: picked who they picked, Let's see what they do. We
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: couldn't do anything about it, worried. I know we couldn't.
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: But I'm just saying like, yeah, you could talk about
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: it all you wanted before. Now we know who they've got.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: Let's see how they do when when they're on the field.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: And that's what you talk about now, because you spend
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: all this last two months looking at draft boards and
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: starting to feel like you know how things should line up.
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: You're all right, we're gonna have to be that mad
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: about it. Fred, excuse me, Fred, But but I think
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: you get to the point though, where you just start
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: that we just want players, Like did they get players?
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: What can they do now that they here? What? What
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: can they do? I know it's a cliche Bill throws
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: around there, it's not how you got here, it's what
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: you do once you get here. But in reality, that's
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: that's what it is. What can these guys do now
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: that they here? I mean, there were plenty of guys
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: who are undrafted who've become starters and important players. Malcolm
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: Butler look made one of the greatest plays in history.
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: Wasn't drafted. He made an opportunity for himself once he
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: got out, Patricia, Let's see what Let's see what happens
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: with these guys. I mean, yeah, and how many he
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: was crying over who they didn't pick now because it's
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: too late for that all that, but that's the analysis.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: That's like, of course we're gonna cry over it if
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: it if it turns out that way. I still lament
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: the fact that they didn't take a better receiver than Harry, right, yeah,
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: Like I'm not going to stop, you know, I'm not
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: going to forget about that. As as Joe Fanum with
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: the speed with receiver, I would agree that this style
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: of receiver wasn't something that I think people were clamoring for.
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: But they wanted speed in the slot. Everybody wanted a
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: slot receiver. And there was some dynamic ones in this draft.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: You know, my guy Shakier, I you know, I liked
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: in sky More a lot of people like I think
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: the kid that Pittsburgh took later in the draft, I
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: don't know how good he's gonna because he's kind of small,
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: but that kid from it was a Calvin Watkins. Calvin Austin.
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: Calvin Austin from Memphis, right that kid, he's another one,
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: Kevin Kolber Pickton. So I'm going to give the benefit
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: of the doubt. Like I think people were looking for
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: a slot receiver. I wasn't necessarily enamored with every slot option,
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: you know, it didn't have to be a slot guy
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: for me. But to suggest that people weren't looking for
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: speed at wide receiver, I think I think people were
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: looking for speed, Yeah don't you. Yeah, yeah, I do.
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: And I mean and I think, and I was constantly
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: kind of questioned myself through the process of being like,
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: am I just romanticizing Wes Welker and Julian Edelman and
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: what they did and you know, trying to reinsert that.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: But I also think that you know, they don't have
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: a lot of guys on a contract next year, so
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: you know, it's it's still gonna be a need to
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: get kind of a chain mover, depending on how they
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: feel about Jacoby. But you know, you're kind of looking
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: at Bourn and Thornton as being the two guys maybe
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: Parker if if that deal sticks. So you know, I
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: think that they're a little heavy on the outside down
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: the field guys going forward, you know, not not against Bourne.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: I mean, I think Bourne can you know, it's a
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: pretty good intermediate cond But you know, I still think
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: it's it's I still think it's a long term need
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: that they need to consider h Josh from Turners Falls.
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: I know, trust me, I know I wanted Lloyd so
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: bad and they obviously didn't. But trying to be hopeful
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: about these picks, I'm actually really hopeful for Thornton. Watching
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: him run as amazing, his forty yard dash looked like
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: a guy who wasn't even trying as hard as I
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: think guys that run trying. I think he gets good
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: separation for a size. The cornerbacks look competitive, strongest, compelling.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: Eight touchdowns of fifty yards or more is impressive. Strange
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: should start at guard, so let's see. I think they
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: may have three or four guys who can contribute right away,
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: and that's all I was hoping for. Who are the
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: three or four guys that can contribute right away? Decide Strange,
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: you have to ask him. Bill picked his guys where
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: he wanted them. Hopefully he's right and the masses are mistaken.
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: I mean, what do you think realistically Thornton will be
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: on this team this year? I think he's a he's
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: like a receiver. Yeah. I mean, you know, if they
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: have something in mind to move Agalore, which I don't
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: think is going to be an easy transaction, then I
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: think there's a chance for Thornton to be a part
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: of this offense. Right now, I don't see really much
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: of a possibility of him being part of the offense
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: unless he's just so you know, damn fast. Yeah, and
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: he is that damn fast. I just don't see a
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: spot for him to play. Yeah, but I like's if
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: he's that fast and he's getting open and making plays
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: though I don't know about getting open if he if
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: he jumps, But but I like what you said Paul
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: and draft night of of you know, he'll be that
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: Agilo role. Now. I know we've talked about maybe moving
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: Aglow around a little bit more. He played a little
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: more in the slot in Philadelphia, so you know, maybe
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: maybe that does. I think he's not right, no, no,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: but but you know, in in little bits and pieces
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: here and there, I think is that you you throw
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: a you give him a shot every once in a while,
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: and maybe he makes a play or two here or there.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: I can't see him catching thirty passes. I can't not
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: unless there's a massive injuries than he has to get
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: moved up. Yeah, that's a little bit of a projection. Yeah,
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: I hear you. I mean I and I just have
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: never you know, speaking to the point of this general player, like,
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: I've never been enamored with the one trick kind of pony.
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: Now I think that he can do some different things.
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: But you know, just the Brandon Cooks of it all,
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: that's always been my I agree with you. I'm not
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: a We just need a guy every time he's either
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: running a go or a comeback. And you know, like,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: but Brandon Cooks could run crossers. He had a lot
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: of deep ends in I think he's a much better profile.
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: And this guy. The other thing with the slot guys too.
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: You know, we got a few of these in the
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: mail bag, like Troy Brown, Wes Welker and Julian Edemand why,
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: you know, you know, why why can't they get somebody?
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: What what do you think of Troy Brown? All around?
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: Think he was a pretty special player. Yeah, should think
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: Welker was a special player. Yes, do you think Edelmand
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: was a special player? So why are people so like
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: confused as to why they can't just snap their fingers
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: and get the next special guy. That's like what I
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: said is like I feel like I'm romanticizing that as
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: like just the like a Keys were good, they were
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: just really good. You can't just draft a small five
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: eight white guy who's got a great three and believe me,
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: I have tried, oh yeah, and tried and tried those guys, Sea,
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: Jeremy Eber Braxton's barrier. Didn't they have Jeremy at one point?
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: Wasn't Jeremy Bloom on this team for a little while?
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: The skier? The skier, Yeah, I don't know. He might
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: have been. They've tried, Yeah he was. He was a
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: skier who played football at Colorado. Let's get back to
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: the phones. Uh, Sean Barry, Hey, Sean, it's John. How
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: are you doing boys, John? Well, it's Sean. Yeah. We're
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: looking at to getting a new producer. So don't worry
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: that one happened. The hearing test, that's all. You know,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: a couple of things I want to point. Uh, you know,
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: I'm taking a wait and see approach to this, like
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: everybody else, I guest story. We don't really have much
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: else to do, but one thing I did not get
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: was a Jack Jones pick. I mean, he's gonna be
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: twenty five years old, he's got a criminal background, he
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: weighs one hundred and seventy five, and he saw a blaze.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: He ran a four or five forty, So what was
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: that all about it? I just don't get that. Pick.
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: I kind of agree he's he's I mean, just to play.
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: To tell you, what I think they saw on him
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: was that he's really quick, really good on the ball,
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: breaks on the ball, you know, aggressive sticks and the
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: hip of guys. I mean, there's no question the size
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: is an issue, absolutely, but that you know, when you
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: see the good things from him, that's what it is.
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: And I mean, has the athleticism to kind of mirror
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: a man demand with guys. Well, maybe you know all
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: those things you just mentioned, you know, having the run
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: in with the law and academic problems USC and all that.
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: Maybe that's the reason why he was available where he was,
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: And maybe the Patriots are convinced, after talking to the
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: guy and doing their research, that he's turned things around. He's,
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: you know, understood where he went wrong, and now this
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: is really important. He looks at it as a as
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: a real opportunity and maybe he's maybe he's a guy
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: that's actually better than where he was drafted. I don't
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: think that's case. Yeah, I think it's like mcgron. I
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: think mcgron was like a Day three guy before before
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: and after the ACL Do you have you have like
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: the Bruge projection, because I think he was a late
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: round projection. Yeah, but why because of his That's not
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: about where they're gonna get drafted. They don't Brugal doesn't
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: predict where they're going to get drafted, Okay, just his ability, right,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: Like it's seven, it's a grade seven, um, and I
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: know there's no doubt that the grade is probably like
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: tainted at least a little by the off field. I
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: think there was some reports, I think Burt Brier was
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: talking about this, that some teams had him completely off
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: their board. Yeah, you know because of the the off
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: field stuff. And as far as I know, like he
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: he broke into a restaurant, it was like, you know,
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: I'm not saying that it's a great guy that I'd
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: like to have over for Sunday dinner, but like, I
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: don't think there was any like do you eyes or battery?
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: You know, domestic abuse with women or like those to me,
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: you know, gun charges, those to me like the things
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: that I would have. It sounds like he made a
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: stupid mistake, like and I'm not stupid, ch and I'd
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: be willing to give a guy another chance as long
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: as that's the extent of his of his criminal background.
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: If not, no violence. No, do you know why he
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: was trying to break in the restaurant? I think they
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: were robbing it. Yeah. Second pleaded guilty to a second
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: degree misdemeanor charge of commercial burglary in October twenty eighteenth,
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: serving forty five days of house arrest. I believe it
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: was at a Panda Express. Oh man, you really have
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: to be hungry that orange chicken, though, I mean, that's
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: good stuff. Hey, you know how much money those Panda
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: Expresses have? Oh it's crazy. Yeah, but they don't keep
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: it in there, right, douce, No, there's money in more story. No,
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: there there's more stories about it that Like he didn't
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: get anything either, right, makes it even not even some
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: orange chicken? Yeah, chicken laarrange. If you had a break
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: into a restaurant for the food, what restaurant would you
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: break into? That's a good question. I mean steak, probably
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: a steak like a big experience, but then you have
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: to cook it, right, Yeah, one of the Italian places.
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: If you're like really hungry and you had you had
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: your choice of restaurants, you had to eat right there.
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: What what restaurant would you break it? Would what would
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: you not have to cook it regardless of where you
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: put in some place that I might have prem like
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: a Delhi in the fridge, Like you go into a
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: Delhi for you know, sliced meats and you just have
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: to make your own cold cuts. Yeah, me and Paul
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: would probably break into Jersey micut meat. Let's go, we're
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: gonna get the super large though, We're gonna we're gonna
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: we rearrange their menu so that we brough it in,
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: like you need one that's in the middle. Or what
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: about the largest too small? You're larger, you're your extra
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: largest too big? They call the cops, somebody broke in.
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: What'd they take? Nothing? Three? Re arrange the menu three
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: three rolls. Eric breaks into a farm and it's like
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: picking vegetables out of the ground. I got all your
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: green beans. I don't like the healthy my favorite restaurant,
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: like I have so many. I'm such a fat guy.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: I yeah, somewhere in the north end. Topic for another show,
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: Capital Grill. Yeah, breakfast. Let's go to William and philam.
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: What's up? William? What's up? Man? How are you doing good? Okay? Uh?
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: This is uh, this is the Mike right here. Well,
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: how are you doing Mike? Okay, I'm doing great. How
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: are you you do? I don't believe it. I'm doing good.
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: I'm doing this all right. I don't have he has
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: a vein coming out of his temple right right as
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: we speak. I only have a little bit of time.
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: I said, come to your question because I am one
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: of those callers that asking about uh, you know, I
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: was getting faster and speeding and all. But I will
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: say this before I get them to answered this. First one. Uh,
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: first one. First that first pick uh cold strain. I
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: don't have a problem with the player, it's just where
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: you picked him at, you know, I mean that I
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: think that's the biggest problem. And you passed up one
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: got Devin Devin Lloyd, Na Kobe b and Trent McDuffie
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: and Jermaine Johnson. Yeah, you could have got you could
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: have got coach strained like later, like and maybe just
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: late second third or whatever, you know what I mean.
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, no, I'm kind of with you guys
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: on that pack. Yeah, okay, And and last but not least, well,
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: I'm playing too like this we asked for. See, it
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: might not be the pick that you want, but you
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: I mean, we never had enough for four to eight
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: speed other than Brandon cooks up. But um hey, I'm
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: just willing to see, you know, see what he can do.
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: I'm not gonna because I've seen this. I've seen him
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: on YouTube many times, but I never thought Bill with
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: like I'll just skip over. I'm like, Bill's going to
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: draft him now. I never thought too. But see what
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: he can do? And that's it. Yeah, thanks, William definitely
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: had some intrigue to camp for me that I that
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: I was really hoping for. I mean, part her fine,
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: but but you know, just a young kid with some
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: some wheels on them. See what that does. And I mean,
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: I know, you know, Paul is making a joke about
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: about going against the Patriots defense, but I think it's great.
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: They're gonna have to deal with guys like that, so
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: you know, whether he's just you know, giving them a
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: look at practice or whatever to start, like, just how
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: do how do they how do they look against real speed?
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: It's hard to get a sense when you know, all
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: the guys that are on the field for the offense
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: maybe aren't aren't burners like that? Yeah? Uh, Eddie's in Florida.
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: Hey Eddie. Hey, guys. You know, I'm not saying anything
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: you haven't heard before, but looking at last year's draft,
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: rounds one through three, they all bill need and it
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: was a really good draft. You'd pretty much tell that
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: after one year. Usually it thinks two or three. And
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: my question is, like, how did we get so many
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: needs this year? After the draft we had all the
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: free agents we had, It's just crazy that, you know,
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: we have so many needs to build. Yeah, and then
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: the fact that they went one through three um with
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: a guard and a you know, featherweight receiver and a
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: five eight kick returner. I think when we wanted speed,
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure it was on defense. So instead of
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: running back, running back, quarterback, they should have went lineback,
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: a safety edge. What do you guys think? You know
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: what I think defense early and often I'm I'm okay
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: that they think SETI I'm okay with the offense because
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: I think I think it's hard to hold teams down.
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: I think you need to try to school with can
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: we force a punt? Yeah? Wow? You need speed everywhere.
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: So but I think the priority was defense. The only
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: thing I can rationalize is that I think I said
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: this on one of the shows during the draft, was
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: maybe they think they're closer to where they need to
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: be on offense and they wanted to just finish up.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: Finish the job. Yeah, finish up. Thought about the same thing,
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: you know, and maybe like defense is such a project
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: that we have to do that piecemeal for a little while,
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: for maybe another year or two. I just think maybe
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: that's the explanation. I think they had major needs they filled. Like,
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: as much as I criticize the draft, I can't argue
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: that they filled a major need with the first round pick, right, Yeah, Like,
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: I don't think it was necessarily this is better than that,
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: that's worse than this. This will take longer. We have
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: major needs. This is a guy we like to fill
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: one of those major needs. We're gonna go with the guard. Yea.
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: I think it's as simple as that. Yeah, it's a
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: player that they liked at a need that was major. Yeah,
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: it's just it's I think about how to upgrade speed
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: on defense, and I think that's why we're kind of
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: enamored with Dean and Lloyd. That's the spot. It feels
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: like you get a fast corner looking kind of like
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: through the draft for a loop because no one has
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: any idea. Well we have an idea, but no one
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: knows for sure why everybody, you know, like it's another
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: one that people are like, oh, the draft experts that
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: thought in the Kobe Dean was going in the first round,
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: and you read like, you know, the seven surgeries that
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: he's had, you know whatever, like the massive red flags
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: that he has from my health perspective, that's why he
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: didn't go in the first round. Yeah, you know, but
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: why wasn't that a factor early on? Like why wasn't
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: that taken into consideration when everyone was evaluating. I know,
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: that's it's just made me feel, you know, not dumb,
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: just because everybody dumb, but I feel we But we
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: spent a lot of time talking like those two guys.
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: I mean, you know, we were up for the draft
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: show and it's like they were you guys couldn't see it,
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: but they had the TV up and it's like do
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: Soo's big board, Nakobe Deane number one, you know, like
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: the guys going third round. Overall, I'm like, I look
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: at im mediate, but but you don't. It's I know,
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: it's all you know, it's and a lot of people
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: might not have not like the people that are doing
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: this might be talking to personnel people in the NFL,
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: which they do, and maybe no one wanted to say
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: on the record that, right, I gotta I gotta red flag.
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: Maybe you're hoping somebody why give everybody else set in? Right? Yeah,
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: it is weird though, and I mean I'm don't it
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: all came out the day of the draft, by the way, right, right,
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: I mean that was the day of the first round
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: that all of those by the way so refused surgery. Right,
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: so some of those guys obviously decided to talk. Yeah,
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: Neil and new Brunswick, there can be no doubt our
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: draft class was uninspiring. But I've moved on to the
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: stage called acceptance. A few comments. No, you're with Mike one.
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: As long as Bill is here, we should do ourselves
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: a favor and never waste a minute looking at another
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: mock draft. It's an exercise and futility. Well, you shouldn't
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: look at mock drafts as often as you do. I
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: agree with that. Period. Two, I feel bad for Cole
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: Strange and Taekwon Thornton. It's not their fault. They were overdrafted.
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: I sincerely hope they can prove Bill right and many
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: others wrong. They should never get the Nikkil Harry treatment.
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: In my opinion, all they did was answer the phone.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: And three, well, same for Nikkil too right, he can't
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: help where he was. He was. And three everything that
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: has happened since February has been on paper. They still
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: play the games on fields. Let's let's wait until something
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: happens on the fields before we judge this offseason. That's
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: kind of the point I was making earlier. Now that
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: they're here, let's see what they can do. But oh yeah,
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: that that is I gotta I gotta give a shout
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: out to a friend of the show, Derek Havens, who
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: sent me I loved I had mentioned I had mentioned
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: last week the PFF mock draft simulators. The exact number
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: was seven hundred and eighty three thousand and two of
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: them had the Patriots tatrange. Then Derek was like No,
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: It's like it was probably Belichick and Matt Patricia like
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: than once. I was like maybe more map than Bill.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: I get see Bill doing the mock draft simulating back
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: girl right Like It's like, I don't think that's that crazy, Like,
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: let's just see what would happen here? We plugged out
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: in it out? Kind of funny, but seven hundred and
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: eighty three changes on paper or irrelevant? What what did
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: you last see? Not good? Like? What did you last see? Bill? Fred?
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: You've been saying it for like the last three days,
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: the last three shows. Can we at least force a punt?
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: You must have said that ten times over the weekend
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: right before acceptance Duck tape Sam from Pleasanton, California. It's
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: easy to understand the frustration of the most feverish fans
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: in sports. Once again, Belichick and company did what they
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: felt was best for the team, which turned out to
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: be what no one else was thinking or wanted. The
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: faithful are up in arms, media an analysts are perplexed,
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: and the rest of the league is laughing, like we
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: needed another reason to despise LA. Now that you've had
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: a few days to digest what happened over draft weekend.
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: Here are my top five questions for each of you.
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: Number One, if Strangers indeed considered a day one starter,
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: how many other rookies will be plug and place starters
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: this season, like in the league or on this None
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: of them? Probably none on the Patriots. He's saying, yeah, rookies,
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: I think he's talking about in the league. Oh well,
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: a lot of them. Yeah, okay, yeah, a lot of them.
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: Two do you expect the team to add any additional
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: starters via trade or free agency before the start of
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: the season? Of so, what position? Do you say? Defense? Flowers,
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: perhaps someone in that vein front seven? I think it's
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: reasonable to expect what Yeah. Three, if you're our GM,
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: would you offer high Tower a one year minimum deal
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: or have you already moved on to the unproven players
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: waiting in the wings? Moved on? I've moved on. I've
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: moved on, But I still think that could happen too.
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: I still think that could happen. Yeah, I would prefer
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: to move on, but I still think it could happen.
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: The only way I'm getting him an offer is if
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: I if you're desperate, and if I want him on
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: the bench, I'm not going to give him an offer.
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: He's not gonna want it. Why would because he's not
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: as good as the guys, the young guys at this
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: point in his career. But if you resign him, then
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: you obviously think that he is. That's what I mean.
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: So you know, I've moved on. Yeah, I don't think
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: he has any interest in playing, So I don't think
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: it's it's weird that he hasn't said anything. I just
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: that that's what I find Stroy. He could come back,
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: or and I just decide to stay out. We don't know.
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: We just don't know. Four. Does the addition of Zappe
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: a fit actually mark the end of Stidham's tenure with
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: the team, or does Belichick keep all four quarterbacks around
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: this season. I don't think he'll keep all four, but
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: I don't think it officially in Stidham's career. Let's see,
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: let's see what he can injuries in camp and in
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: his ability. Yeah, what if he can't play? Yeah exactly
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: that Now? Is he particularly mobile? No? No, I mean
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: he's okay. So I was thinking you put him on
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: the you know, I mean squad and use him as
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: a scout. It's hard to go by college rushing totals
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: because the sack yardage gets counted for a quarterback in
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: college as rushing. So he has like zero yards career. Yeah. Uh,
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: he had just like zero point eight yards per carry. Yeah.
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: On on jto Sullivan's breakdown over at the quarterback school
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: on YouTube, he showed against Army he had like a
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: like a forty yards scrambled it. So we can mode
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: a little bit. It's Danny, but yeah, I bet he's not. Uh.
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: And finally, I know it's early, just wondering which undrafted
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: rookie do you like is your front runner to make
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: the team and at what position? De Eric King see
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: that could be your slot receiver. He could be. He
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: could be he could be a practice player of the
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: week every week. That had made me feel great if
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: we took a quarterback and just immediately plugged him in
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: as a starter, you know, unlike Edelman, who he took
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: him three years. Who else would be? I don't know.
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: It's hard to it's hard to project with Derek King's
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: a good you know, it's a fun player to watch.
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: I mean, he's here, but he's he's a top flight athlete.
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: He's really small. Lebrian Ray from Alabama defensive line guy,
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: but he was unspectacular. Yeah, I'd probably go de Eric King.
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: I mean I would just just because it's the guy,
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: you know, without having any idea, I would just pick
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: an offensive lineman. Is it the Eric? Does he go
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: by Derek? It's he does, say Eric? Why? I was
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: just wondering it just one? Yeah, I think he goes by.
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: He's quarterback at Houston and Minami, oh boy, put down
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: the cigarettes fault. It's really I mean, I mean pretty
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: much make such a good point there. I don't know why.
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: I haven't any of his points. We don't know it.
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: But Paul goes home. He's a chain smoker, just like
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: one after another. A guy get light value, safe home, Honey.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: I'd rather fight than switch. Um. Joe writes in in
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: these past weeks, you all have said that we would
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: need at least three of these draft picks to contribute
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: this year. How do you feel about this now? How
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: do you feel about it now? Do you see at
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: least three of these rookies being able to contribute this year? Nope?
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: And he puts the word big, contribute big this year.
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: Ready for the season to start. And I also imagine
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: the Patriots pick some big name veteran during the season.
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: I I don't know. I hope, I hope that you know,
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: strange to receive ever and one of the corners contributed.
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: I think, yeah, I mean, I think baseline the baseline
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: is strange at guard and and Marcus Jones as as
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: your kickoff and punt returner and maybe maybe like a playmaker,
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: and you know, not just like oh a guy to
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: be back there and return punts like a guy who
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: legitimately is a weapon as a as a returner. Like
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: if he's like Generalleschevsky returning punts and kicks, is that
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: considered a big contract? And he was an All Pro Paul, No,
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: I know that I'm counting that y'all pro season, Like
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: imagine that one game he had every game? I mean,
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: and I know that they didn't pick him just so
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: he could return, Like I I understand that I'm not
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: killing them for something that I don't even think they did.
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: But you know, if all he is as a returner,
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: you don't have kick returns anymore. And Fred has gone
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: to great lengths over the last couple of weekends to
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: tell us how they don't force punts, So, like, what
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: do we do. What do we have a you know,
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: a dynamic return man for when he doesn't really get
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: an opportunity to return. Yeah, and how does his presence
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: affect Jonathan Jones and Miles Bryant And how does that
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: fit together? Yeah, without having seen him on the field yet,
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: would you be concerned if he's one of your starting
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: corners this year? Well, I mean, at least we're going
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: to the job. Based on what I saw of him,
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: I don't. I mean, if he could win the job.
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: I think he's got skills to be you know, he's small,
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: but I think he's quick. I think he shows good
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: skill like you know, good athleticism, good plays in the
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: ball like. I mean, I think he's more of a
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: returner to start spot, fill in guy at cornerback and
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: and you know, yeah, I'm very skeptical of those two
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: corners based on size. They're really small. But I wonder
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: about Stuber as the as like the third backup tackle.
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: I mean, I think that that's a potential spot where
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: I don't feel great about Haran could just Arlington Hambright um,
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: So maybe that's another spot where you know, somebody could
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: could kind of emerge. Ray and Saint Louis. I'm a
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: little disappointed, only because I spent a week doing draft
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: simulations before the draft, and only person I got right
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: was our wide receiver, but I got him in the fifth.
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: Hopefully these guys are dogs and play with fire. Who
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: do you think we could possibly still pick up in
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: free agency? That's that's his question. I'd have to I mean,
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: I'd have to look beyond some of the some of
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: the obvious one than Flowers is an easy one. But
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: now that the comp formulas and I know that there's
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: there's guys that are available, but like I mean, there's
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: a reason why guys are available. At this point, you
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: might you might get a you know, a Keem Hicks
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: is still available, but again, these guys are not going
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: to come in and transform your team, and they're on
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: the street in the middle of May, right, um, Zach
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: and Brighton amazing job, but the draft coverage all weekend? Uh?
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: Question in a comment, first and foremost regarding Taekwon Thornton,
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: do you um think with him only being twenty one
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: he turns twenty two August seven, add some hope that
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: he can continue to fill out his frame. I love
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: to pick, but I do have some durability questions that
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: I would feel better about if he was closer to
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: at least one ninety to two hundred by the time
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: he's twenty four twenty five. Yeah, I think. I mean,
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: it seems like he's got some some you know, ability
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: to put he's like one eight right now. Yeah, I
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: just love you don't want to lose that speed, you know, No,
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: And that's why I loved listening to him kind of
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: talk about it, just as somebody who could never run
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: fast and was always jealous of the kids that somehow could,
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: but just talking about Yeah, I was just wicking fast,
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: and then you know, I got in the weight room,
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: then I was like even faster, and then I really
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: started looking on first ball and then and then we
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: were really talking how fast and like, what's it like?
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: Like I just felt like I was always at like,
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: you know, two thirds speed of everybody else trying to
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: run it out. But also, I can't stand draft grades run.
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: I can't stand draft grade season. I get that the
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: sports meet world is what it is, but from a
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: humanizing standpoint, could you imagine landing your dream job coming
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: out of college and have everyone in the industry say
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: that it was a deed to hire you a stretch comparison,
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: I know, but I can't help, but this be sour
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: about the whole grading thing, considering most people get it
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: completely wrong anyway, right, not just for last twenty two years,
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: not just from a Patriots standpoint either. For example, Good
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: Morning Football mentioned today that most people gave the Seahawks
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: an F in twenty twelve after selecting Bruce Irvant, Bobby Wagner,
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: and Russell Wilson, who was grading the graders on their performance.
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: People smear these kids' names for content and then they
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: don't know blank about how they will really play. Yeah,
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: no one's who's that from? It's from Zach and Brighton.
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: No one's forcing you to read the grades either. It's like,
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: if you don't like them, don't read them. It's got
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: nothing to do with it. I know, I know what
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: it is, just saying, Alex, because the content is we're
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: worried about the psyche of the poor kids that are
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: being hold that they got their A D. They amount
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: to A. Yes, that's your concern, is the humanity of
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: it all? Yeah, Okay, the money would help me if
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: somebody called me exactly. But here's a couple of million
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: bucks a year. I've been called a lot worse, and
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: I don't make anywhere near that amount of money alex
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: and Philly. So it's official, according to all the experts
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: that the Patriots just had the worst draft of all time.
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: It's almost the consensus that the Patriots reached on every
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: pick pretty much. It is weird that the fact that
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: the Patriots got a bad draft grade by everyone who
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: does those things actually makes me feel better about the
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: draft class. We all know that Belichick has had several
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: bad drafts in the past, and I'm pretty sure those
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: same experts probably gave him an A or a B
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: for those classes at the time. So I was surprised
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: by the Belichick criticism of this draft class. But maybe
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: in my crazy fan mind the reverse might happen this time.
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: I liked the addition of speed at wide receiver and
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: running back. Don't know why they drafted a second running back.
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: I'm worried about the defense, and I didn't like a
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: guard in the first round, so I guess I'll give
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: the Patriots a C plus. So like everybody else, Yeah,
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: I mean, I'm surprised people are that confounded by the
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: running back they've got one running back under contract for
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: next year. So I mean, is it really that crazy.
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: They've done it before, They've taken two before, and the
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: same kind of thing with Ridley and Verreen. I just
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: think they are irrelevant positions to use two draft picks
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: on when you are a major rebuild. Like I think
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: it's fine to take a running back when you don't
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: really need one when you have the best team in football.
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: I don't have any problem with that. You're sort of
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: building capital for when Shane Vereen leaves and I can
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: replace them with James White. That's a luxury when you're great.
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: They don't have that luxury right now, Well I don't.
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: I mean, but to Deuce's point, if you have one
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: guy under contract for twenty twenty three and you know
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: you're gonna need four or five on your roster, I
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: think they always overstock it too. They always are anticipating
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: injuries and they always use a lot of them. And
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: I mean I say that as like I was kind
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: of met on Kevin Harris, but I mean I was
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: gonna say, like, you're gonna have one guy under contract
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: either way, Like these guys are no locks, no, I know,
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: so like it's not like you solved your running back
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: problem for twenty twenty three. But well you took a
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: step toward that, you know. But what's so okay? So
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: so now let's say they both hit. So now you
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: have three perfect, that's perfect. Freend just told me you
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: need five. Well you'll get the other two some other way.
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: Oh okay, I agree, But getting having to get two
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: is better than having to get four or five. You
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: don't need to have five. You have vermondre Stevenson is
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: slated to be your lead back. Yep. So you just
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: need complimentary pieces. Oh you need more than that. Guys
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: get hurt. We always say, what are they gonna do
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: with all those running backs? You can always play, you
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: can have four complimentary people. That's what happened, you know,
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: with Bolden and James White. Thank god we had James
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: Bolden on the roster. I mean Brandon Bolden. Who's James Yeah,
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: thank god? Nobody his uncle, thank god, because no one
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: else kind of James Baldwin. Uh. Let's see Ben from
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: Pittsfield over the Penny Times. He proves my point when
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: he thinks he between my place an undrafted special team
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: or did the job. Imagine. Yeah, but he's on the
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: roster right, so just get complimentary pieces. This is what
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: I'm saying to him. Bolden was undrafted. Over the past
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: few years, I've heard a lot of negativity about the
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: draft and the Patriots future. I understand and to some
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: extent agree, But personally, I'm excited we have a young
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: quarterback next year, We'll have a solid amount of draft
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: picks and more importantly, a ton of cap space. We
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: can't expect success right away. And while I wasn't a
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: big fan of some of the draft picks, I am
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: excited about the speed we have. I'm very happy we
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: will hopefully be playing some of the younger defensive players.
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: At the end of the day, we made some changes.
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: It will be exciting to see how they translate to
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: the field. So there you go. Yeah, it's a different
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: team now. I mean, I think that's that's part of
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: the part of the whole big picture, is that you know,
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: you're so used to be in a certain way for
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: so long, and you know, what does it look like
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: in a rebuild and be trying to become like that young,
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: upstart team, And you know, how do you transition to
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: that without totally blowing it up? And losing any connection
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: to what you had. But you know, also being mindful
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: of certain guys can't play forever. And I mean, I
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: think we've been critical of hanging on to some guys
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: a little bit too long. But you know, it seems
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: like this year it's going to be a little bit
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: more of an influx of unproven guys and that's scary.
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: But if some of those guys hit with opportunity, then
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: you have some twenty twenty three will be are all
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: in here. That's our all in season, John writes in
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: the way it looks right now, it's going to be
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: a rip it down to the studs rebuild you quick
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: question for Mike. In the PU episodes after Brady went
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: to Tampa, Mike kept talking about how much and he
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: has quotes fun it would be to rebuild, to see
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: how the young guys develop, and what Bill would do
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: to evolve and rebuild. I'm just curious if Mike's having
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: fun or when he thinks the fun might start. Watching
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: the end of last season and this weekend's draft, I'm
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: not having much fun. I don't want to take this
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: as a shot at Mike. I like him. Just that
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: statement about the rebuild being fun rubbed me wrong when
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: he said it then as and it has stuck with me.
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: I don't think this rebuild would be fun. The AFC
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: is loaded and we don't have the personnel to keep up.
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: I think we are looking at third or fourth place
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: in the East. So Mac Jones, no fun for you.
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: Last year, that wasn't fun finding a rookie quarterback, bringing
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: him in, watching him succeed. I have a lot of
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: fun with Mac Jones, and I mean I do. I
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: know it's a challenge. I mean it's hard, but I
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: think it's fun watching the team. How you know, rebuild,
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: I know it like it is painful, no question. I'm
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: gonna speak for Mike here, and he is Nothing that
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: he just said is not true. He's enjoying this process.
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: He likes this element of it. I'm with the emailer.
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: I don't find any of this fun. I liked it
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: better when we were winning the AC championship every year.
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: That was me. Yeah, I'm you call me a front runner.
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: I mean that's okay. I'll accept it, but I don't
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: appreciate that the fact. No, I think Mike is as
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: genuine as it comes with the whole process he's excited
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: about Mac Jones. I'm not so like that kind of like, well,
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: you have to accept it. It's like a lot of
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: people were hoping that we wouldn't have to go through
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: this process after Brady somehow, oh yeah, somehow we would
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: just figure out a way different thing. You know, realistically,
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: this is exactly where I kind of expected to be.
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: Who thought that there was going to be a seamless
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: like from Absolutely, I'm not angered by it at all,
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: but but I also don't think it's overly fun. Yeah,
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: and it's also not a perfect perfect process. I mean,
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: you know, you took some steps back the first year,
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: you took some steps forward last year, but then it
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: ended it poorly, and you know this year again there's questions.
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: I don't know, you're not just going to easily build
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: on last year and right now, ye, Cam in a mistake.
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: I think it was. And I also think going hog
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: wilder because why because I think you should have been
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: able to play somebody else to find out if you
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: had anything there, namely jared' Stidham. What about like winning
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: too many games? No, they didn't win some games. I'm
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: not gonna be hypocritical or at the time, I was
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: excited about it. Yeah, but I didn't know he couldn't play. Yeah,
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: this is all in hindsight. At the time, we were like,
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: oh my god, they got Cam Newton, right, But much
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: like we're you know, we're not allowed to weigh in
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: on the draft right now because we don't know. They
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: should know, Yeah, and they didn't. Yeah right about Cam
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: that he couldn't play. Yeah, I mean he couldn't and
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: I would rather And I think that it was a
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: mistake to go hog wild and free agency last year.
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: You've talked about that. Wow, Like in retrospect, maybe they
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: should have been. I think they were were conflicted last
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: But I mean, okay, let's say that they saved some
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: of that money for this year, Like where would they
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: have spended on who defensive front seven? I would hope,
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: you know, yeah, that would be that would be the spot.
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: But or hit. But then you and if they did
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: what they did and hit, well, yeah, if you didn't
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: get all those tight ends of wide receivers, you'd go
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: into this season go we need tight ends and read
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: receiver and then they wouldn't spend it on where you
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: want to spend it. You know, it's I mean it's
- 1:59:12Speaker 1: so hard. They signed two wide receivers last year and
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: took they traded up in the second round to take one. Yeah,
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: so I mean that they still need help. Sure, it's
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: also just the convergence of events of last year with
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: COVID and the money, and I think we would have
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: been moaning and groaning if they hadn't spent all that money.
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: Now again on who you can question question that, but
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: at the time we were like, oh, they got the
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: best of the breed at the positions that they spent
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: it on. So I mean, I don't know, it's it's
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: it's why it's hard. That's why being in the position
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: of building a winner is. You know, we're not used
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: to that. For twenty years, you know, we were in
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: the position of maintaining a winner, and you know, it's
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: it's like whack themole, you know. It's it's when you
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: don't have the quarterback for sure in place that can
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: you know really just I mean Brady was Brady, but
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: you know still I think the there's a collection of
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: quarterbacks across the league that, you know, just make the
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: team better and they give you some leeway to work
- 2:00:05Speaker 1: with him when you don't really have that you don't.
- 2:00:07Speaker 1: You know, you're starting Cam Newton at the end or
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: a rookie. You know, it's it's it's take. Everything's kind
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: of more glaring and you take a shot. I mean,
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: I know we're done, so it's a but. But do
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: you think that maybe in retrospect there would have been
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: better off Lettings did him play? Um? Probably, I think
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: I don't think it would have mattered, but probably I
- 2:00:25Speaker 1: don't think at least you would have known about I
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: don't think he's that good. Yeah, I don't think he's
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: that guy. But he could have played, gotten some experience
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: and you would have known what you had. Right. Yeah,
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: we wouldn't have had all the hits on social though. Okay,
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: all right, that's gonna be it for this edition of
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: Patriots Unfiltered. We'll be back on Thursday with more draft recap,
