Transcript
- 0:04All right, Hi, this is Paul Slatkis. I'm speaking to my good
- 0:07friend Carol Astro. Hi, Carol, how are you hi? There?
- 0:12Carol is producing a show again and you can't miss a Caroil Astro show.
- 0:16She's working with a Philip Reisman and Carol Astro present a Meaningful Monday Special series
- 0:24at are Beloved Actors Temple. That's Monday, February twelfth at six thirty to
- 0:30eight pm, an homage to the visual and performing arts. So Carol,
- 0:35tell us about this show and you make the greatest shows. Yeah, and
- 0:38you care about everybody in the theater. I'm always so nervous. I never
- 0:42know if it's the right time or anything. But that's the way I am
- 0:47as a producer and also as a talent or. I don't know if I
- 0:53have any talent, but a performer and a producer, I'm always very nervous
- 0:57because I want it to be good. If people to see a show,
- 1:00especially at our temple, then it has to be good. And not everybody
- 1:04who will feel that way, but at least it has such great people who
- 1:10are giving their heart and soul for our Meaningful Monday Series. So it's not
- 1:15really a fundraiser because I'm not charging very much. I just want people to
- 1:19come in and see what we have to offer. There so much talent in
- 1:25New York, both the visual and the performing talent categories, and we have
- 1:32fabulous people, some of whom actually like you, who belong to the Temple,
- 1:37are extremely talented. So I'm exploiting that because I don't have to worry
- 1:42about their wanting to perform to do so much good for the temple. Everybody
- 1:49does, but especially those who are on the board and those were members.
- 1:53Well the temple itself give a little background. I mean, you've been on
- 1:57before and a lot of people know that the place, but you know,
- 2:01we're saying the Actors Temple. It actually had a religious name as well.
- 2:06And it's been around how many years now, one hundred something. Yes,
- 2:09we're one hundred and seven years old. The building itself is about one hundred
- 2:15and one years old. But Temple Ezrat Israel aka also the Actors Temple one
- 2:23hundred and seven years. It's hard to believe that something has withstood time as
- 2:29beautifully and as meaningfully as our little temple, and it was started as a
- 2:35very Orthodox temple. Our balcony upstairs was for the women, but we had
- 2:43some very famous people who were members. They were actors like Sophie Tucker,
- 2:47and she's the one who decided with a friend of hers that they were not
- 2:53going to negotiate the steps upstairs. They were going to sit downstairs with the
- 2:57men. They were good enough to do that, and they did it,
- 3:00and bingo, we became a reform temple. Thank you Sophia Tucker. But
- 3:07we have members like Al Jolson and sports figures, so many people in show
- 3:16business who Milton Burro for instance, so many from the Friars Club who were
- 3:23the comedians who were members. So it was Milton Borough, Red Buttons,
- 3:28the three Stooges came. Two of them were Jewish, one eventually was not,
- 3:32but they came to raise money and they prayed at our temple every Friday
- 3:37night. Milton Burle was there to have his minion to say prayers, and
- 3:44it was a phenomenal place to hang out, not just for show business people
- 3:47as we are today, but for anyone who chose to practice their religion on
- 3:53Shabbat Friday nights, Saturday mornings and when they had fundraisers and shows. It's
- 4:00true today still today the same and Rogers Saturday Morning, and Rogers and Hammerstein
- 4:05could back them all up, you know whatever. We even did a show
- 4:12about Richard Rogers. We called it Love Songs, and they were everything that
- 4:16he had written. An Anna Bergmann was the star of that show and it
- 4:19was about five years ago. Oops, there's my good had a show.
- 4:25Business is calling. That's all right, give us the details. It says,
- 4:31we read he monologue. Original music performances, all from a professional community,
- 4:35absolutely magnificent, original paintings. What does that mean? Yes, well,
- 4:41there are so many artists. I mean this is a visual as well
- 4:43as performing arts. So the artists are, for instance, Bobby Bank,
- 4:47who is a fabulous photographer. He's going to bring his pictures for sale.
- 4:53Then there's Rowhemei Vinica, who who is living in my building as a matter
- 5:00fact, she just came here from India and invited me to see her paintings.
- 5:05She's a prolific painter, modern art, colorful, gorgeous, so she's
- 5:11bringing some of her paintings. Then there's Jim Brochhoe who was also one of
- 5:15our entertainers and a painter, and he does things in penny ink, little
- 5:19miniature things that are so exquisite. You can't imagine how he's able to have
- 5:25the eyesight to do these little wonderful miniature paintings. And we have I don't
- 5:31want to leave anybody else. Toby Bush, did we freeze? I think
- 5:36we froze a little bit. There's a fashion of a second. It was
- 5:41a beautiful freeze though. You look marvelous and I looked, okay, thank
- 5:46you. So there's also Toby Bush and a wonderful painter by the name of
- 5:51John Manitarian. He has a show right now. And Jim Broshoe, Jane
- 5:59Goldman, wow On and Rohini are in the gallery and they're right next door
- 6:05on what is it fifty forty ninth or fiftieth. If anybody's interested, just
- 6:12have them call me. But it's forty ninth and fiftieth, just up the
- 6:15street from Sacks fifth Avenue, in a beautiful old building with a gallery that's
- 6:20one gallery and a half beautiful. There this this producer, this woman in
- 6:26front of me here is a producer of producers, and she also fills up
- 6:31houses for many, many years with people coming here. One of my clients
- 6:35who wants tickets to a brand new show suffraject judge and to enjoy Broadway and
- 6:42off Broadway for so many years. You know that all the producers of the
- 6:45producers love this lady because she knows how to fill up seats as well to
- 6:50great shows. I want you to know, and I'm bragging right now,
- 6:54but my nickname with some is the Goddess of group sales. Well, I
- 7:01think it was a properly stated all good Carol, Well, thank you.
- 7:09Anything else we should know? I mean, it's it's a very exciting event.
- 7:13Tickets are only thirty five dollars. Come on. I mean, it's
- 7:15a it's a it's a donation in essence to the to our wonderful temple,
- 7:19a temple that then also donates. They've donated to concerns in this whole wide
- 7:26world and taken in taking in the homes. We had a fundraiser for Ukraine,
- 7:32we have a fundraiser for actors. We just do whatever we can for
- 7:36our community. And it means so much to have people come and enjoy the
- 7:42talent and the religion that we have, which is reformed. Come in be
- 7:46Jewish and a great Rabbi Rabbit jil Hausman. Everybody is it's a it's a
- 7:54we call it in the others we call it a Hamiship place. It's a
- 7:57very warm temple as a have assign that side. It's a good feeling.
- 8:01You're you're always welcomed and uh and and everybody's kind and loving in there.
- 8:07I love it so warm people. There you go, all right, Carol,
- 8:13thanks again, congratulations once again. I'm looking forward and uh to be
- 8:16there and I play a little bit of piano and uh yes, thank you,
- 8:24Thanks Carol, Bye bye
