Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Pomoja Ministry. Throughout this journey,
- 0:04we have been discovering that God's refining
- 0:07work reaches much deeper than our circumstances.
- 0:10We began by asking, what if the intervention
- 0:13was about you? Then we discovered the fire reveals
- 0:17what success can hide. We learned discipline
- 0:22protects vision. And in our last conversation,
- 0:26James chapter three showed us how refinement
- 0:29must eventually reach our mouth because something
- 0:32as small as a spark can burn an entire forest.
- 0:36But today, I want us to go backward. Before the
- 0:40fire. Before the public failure. Before the destructive
- 0:45decision. Before the relationship collapses.
- 0:48Before the leader falls. Before the ministry
- 0:51is damaged. Before the family is wounded. Before
- 0:55somebody wakes up asking, How did I get here?
- 0:59Because collapse rarely begins on the day everybody
- 1:03sees it. There was often something much smaller
- 1:06before it. A thought, a conversation, an attraction,
- 1:11an offense, an image, a relationship, a resentment,
- 1:16a private compromise, a seed. And perhaps the
- 1:20greatest danger of the seed is that it does not
- 1:23look like the harvest it is capable of producing.
- 1:26Today, We are talking about the seed that weakens
- 1:31resistance. Remember this universal and biblical
- 1:35truth. Before there is a harvest, there is always
- 1:39a seed. We have spoken before about the theology
- 1:43of seeds. Some seeds enter our lives without
- 1:46our knowledge. Some seeds enter with our knowledge.
- 1:50And some seeds remain because we continue entertaining
- 1:53and watering them. Jesus repeatedly used seeds
- 1:57to explain spiritual realities because seeds
- 2:00carry something extraordinary, potential. When
- 2:04you hold a seed, you are holding something much
- 2:08larger than what you can currently see. A seed
- 2:11does not look like a tree. A seed does not look
- 2:15like a field. A seed does not look like a harvest.
- 2:20But the harvest is already contained within its
- 2:23potential. That principle works in both directions.
- 2:28A good seed can eventually produce something
- 2:31beautiful, but a destructive seed can also produce
- 2:35something far larger than the original compromise.
- 2:39That is why wisdom does not only examine what
- 2:42something is today. Wisdom asks, what could this
- 2:46become if I keep feeding it? Remember this truth,
- 2:51the enemy does not always need you to fall today.
- 2:55Sometimes we imagine temptation as an immediate
- 2:59attempt to make someone abandon everything they
- 3:02believe. But often the process is much more subtle.
- 3:06The enemy does not necessarily need you to destroy
- 3:09your marriage today. He only needs you to become
- 3:13comfortable with a conversation that should have
- 3:16ended. He doesn't necessarily need you to abandon
- 3:20your calling today. He only needs you to tolerate
- 3:24something that slowly weakens your convictions.
- 3:28He doesn't necessarily need you to stop praying
- 3:31forever. Maybe he only needs you to become comfortable
- 3:35continually postponing prayer. He doesn't necessarily
- 3:40need you to reject God's word. Maybe he only
- 3:43needs other voices to become louder than God's
- 3:46voice. He doesn't necessarily need you to become
- 3:50bitter overnight. He only needs you to keep replaying
- 3:55the offense. He doesn't necessarily need you
- 3:58to become dishonest immediately. He only needs
- 4:02the first small compromise to become acceptable
- 4:06because once something becomes acceptable, resistance
- 4:10begins changing. Resistance can be trained in
- 4:14both directions. This is something we need to
- 4:18understand. You can train yourself to resist
- 4:21temptation, but you can also train yourself not
- 4:24to resist it. Every time you establish a boundary
- 4:28and honor it, resistance becomes stronger. Every
- 4:33time you obey conviction, resistance becomes
- 4:36stronger. Every time you walk away, resistance
- 4:39becomes stronger. Every time you tell yourself
- 4:43no, because purpose matters more, resistance
- 4:47becomes stronger. But the opposite can also happen.
- 4:52Every time you violate a boundary and nothing
- 4:55immediately happens, the next violation can become
- 4:58easier. Every time you ignore conviction, its
- 5:02voice can become easier to dismiss. Every time
- 5:06you return to the same temptation, familiarity
- 5:09increases. Every time you justify compromise,
- 5:14resistance weakens. This is why compromise is
- 5:17so dangerous. It does not merely affect one decision.
- 5:21It can train you for the next one. Think about
- 5:26how compromise often develops. The first time
- 5:30always felt different. The first time you were
- 5:33uncomfortable. Something inside you said, this
- 5:37isn't right. Your conscience was disturbed. You
- 5:41prayed about it. You thought about stopping.
- 5:45Maybe you even promised yourself, this will never
- 5:48happen again. But then it happened again. And
- 5:52the second time did not feel exactly like the
- 5:55first. Then again. Eventually, the thing that
- 5:59once disturbed you became familiar. Then what
- 6:03became familiar began feeling normal. And once
- 6:07something feels normal, We begin finding language
- 6:10to justify it. It's not that serious. Everybody
- 6:14does this. Nobody is perfect. God knows my heart.
- 6:19We are only friends. I'm just looking. I'm just
- 6:23venting. I can stop whenever I want. And without
- 6:28realizing it, something has happened. The temptation
- 6:32may not have become stronger. Your resistance
- 6:36may have become weaker. This statement is true.
- 6:40Compromise changes the boundary. Imagine a line
- 6:45in the sand. At first, you know exactly where
- 6:48the boundary is. You refuse to cross it. Then
- 6:51one day, you step slightly across. Nothing dramatic
- 6:55happens. So you move the line. Now yesterday's
- 6:59compromise becomes today's boundary. Then you
- 7:03cross again and move the line again. Eventually
- 7:07you can be standing somewhere you once promised
- 7:10yourself you would never go. And because the
- 7:14movement happened gradually, you may not recognize
- 7:18how far you traveled. That is the danger of progressive
- 7:22compromise. Very few people wake up one morning
- 7:26and decide, today I will destroy everything God
- 7:30has given me. It usually doesn't happen like
- 7:33that. They move the boundary. then moved it again,
- 7:37then again, until eventually the distance between
- 7:41conviction and behavior became enormous. Samson
- 7:46gives us a powerful picture. Samson did not lose
- 7:50his strength in one day. We often remember the
- 7:54final scene. Delilah, the haircut, the Philistines,
- 7:59the loss of strength. But Samson's collapse did
- 8:03not begin with the haircut. Long before Delilah,
- 8:07there was a pattern. Samson repeatedly moved
- 8:11toward things connected to his vulnerabilities.
- 8:15He repeatedly played near boundaries. He repeatedly
- 8:18trusted his strength while neglecting wisdom.
- 8:21And perhaps one of Samson's greatest dangers
- 8:24was this. He kept surviving his compromises.
- 8:29That can become dangerous. Because when consequences
- 8:32do not immediately follow compromise, we can
- 8:35mistake God's mercy for permission. You cross
- 8:39the boundary and nothing happened. You compromised
- 8:43and the ministry still functioned. You made the
- 8:47decision and people still respected you. You
- 8:50neglected prayer and the gift still worked. You
- 8:54entertained the relationship and your life did
- 8:57not immediately collapse. So you assume Maybe
- 9:01this isn't really dangerous. But delayed consequences
- 9:06do not transform compromise into wisdom. And
- 9:10mercy should never be interpreted as God's approval
- 9:13of what his word has already warned us about.
- 9:18Be careful when gifting makes you feel invincible.
- 9:21This becomes especially dangerous for gifted
- 9:24people. Because sometimes the gift keeps working
- 9:28while the person carrying it is weakening. Samson
- 9:31would compromise and then still experience extraordinary
- 9:35strength. Imagine what that can do psychologically.
- 9:40I still have my strength. The preacher still
- 9:43preaches. The singer still sings. The leader
- 9:47still leads. The business still grows. The platform
- 9:51still expands. People are still applauding. Doors
- 9:55are still opening, and because outward success
- 9:59continues, the person assumes inward compromise
- 10:03is not serious. But success is not always evidence
- 10:07of spiritual health, and continued gifting is
- 10:11not permission to ignore character. Remember
- 10:15what we have been learning. The fire reveals
- 10:17what success can hide. Sometimes success allows
- 10:21a dangerous seed to remain underground for years.
- 10:27Think about the story if King David in the rooftop.
- 10:31When David saw Bathsheba, the visible failure
- 10:34occurred quickly. But the principle reaches deeper.
- 10:39A king who should have been at war was at home.
- 10:42He saw, he desired, he inquired, he sent, he
- 10:47took. Notice the progression. There were multiple
- 10:51places where the sequence could have stopped.
- 10:54Seeing did not have to become inquiry. Inquiry
- 10:57did not have to become sending. Sending did not
- 11:01have to become taking. This is important because
- 11:05temptation often has exit points, and discipline
- 11:09recognizes them early. The longer you continue
- 11:12down the sequence, the more difficult stopping
- 11:15can become. So wisdom asks, Where is my earliest
- 11:19exit? Not. How close can I get without falling?
- 11:24But how early can I protect what God has entrusted
- 11:29to me? Look at Eve's conversation before the
- 11:32fruit. We often focus on the moment she ate the
- 11:36fruit. But Genesis 3 records something before
- 11:40the eating. A conversation. The serpent questioned
- 11:44God's word. Did God actually say? Then the boundary
- 11:49began being reconsidered. The seed entered through
- 11:53conversation before the fruit entered through
- 11:56appetite. That is powerful. Because sometimes
- 12:00the dangerous thing is not yet what you are doing.
- 12:04It is what you have allowed yourself to repeatedly
- 12:07consider. A conversation can plant a seed. An
- 12:11idea can plant a seed. A voice can plant a seed.
- 12:15A relationship can plant a seed. Repeated exposure
- 12:20can plant a seed. And once planted, the seed
- 12:24asks for water. What are you watering? This may
- 12:30be one of the most important questions of this
- 12:33entire conversation. What are you watering? What
- 12:37are you repeatedly thinking about? What conversations
- 12:41do you continually return to? What offense do
- 12:45you continually replay? What fantasy do you continually
- 12:51entertain? What relationship do you keep feeding
- 12:54emotionally? What content repeatedly enters your
- 12:58mind? What resentment receives your attention
- 13:02every day? What secret appetite are you negotiating
- 13:06with? What compromise are you continually explaining
- 13:10away? Because attention is water. Repetition
- 13:13is water. Access is water. Justification is water.
- 13:18Secrecy can become water. And eventually, the
- 13:22thing you keep watering will grow. Do you know
- 13:27that an offense can be a seed too? We should
- 13:30not limit this conversation to obvious moral
- 13:33temptation. Offense is a seed. Someone hurts
- 13:37you. The pain is real. But then you replay it.
- 13:42You rehearse the conversation. You imagine what
- 13:45you should have said. You tell another person,
- 13:49then another. Each retelling adds water. Eventually,
- 13:54pain can become resentment. Resentment can become
- 13:58bitterness. Bitterness can begin influencing
- 14:02how you interpret everything the person does.
- 14:05Now even neutral actions appear hostile. The
- 14:09seed has grown. This is why forgiveness is not
- 14:12pretending nothing happened. Sometimes forgiveness
- 14:16is refusing to continue watering what happened.
- 14:21This truth has been taught to us since we were
- 14:23kids. Bad company can water bad seeds. First
- 14:29Corinthians 1533 warns, bad company corrupts
- 14:33good character. Notice the language. Corruption
- 14:37is often a process. People influence what becomes
- 14:41normal to us. Spend enough time around compromise,
- 14:45and compromise can begin to feel reasonable.
- 14:49Spend enough time around gossip, and gossip begins
- 14:52sounding like conversation. Spend enough time
- 14:56around dishonesty, and dishonesty becomes strategy.
- 15:00Spend enough time around bitterness, and bitterness
- 15:04becomes discernment. Spend enough time around
- 15:08people who constantly dishonor boundaries and
- 15:11boundaries begin looking extreme. This does not
- 15:15mean Christians isolate themselves from everyone
- 15:18who struggles. Jesus loved and reached people
- 15:22everywhere. But there is a difference between
- 15:25loving someone and allowing someone to shape
- 15:28you. Not everybody should have equal access to
- 15:32your inner life. Some people are being influenced
- 15:35by you. Other people are influencing you. Wisdom
- 15:40knows the difference. There is a danger we must
- 15:45avoid in our Christian life. The danger of normalized
- 15:49compromise. One of the enemy's greatest victories
- 15:53is not always getting you to love sin. Sometimes
- 15:57it simply gets you to normalize compromise. Sometimes...
- 16:02It is simply getting you to stop being disturbed
- 16:05by compromise. When something that once bothered
- 16:09your conscience no longer bothers you, pay attention.
- 16:13When you begin hiding things you once would have
- 16:16openly discussed, pay attention. When you become
- 16:19defensive whenever someone questions a relationship,
- 16:23pay attention. When you have to explain why something
- 16:27is acceptable continually, pay attention. When
- 16:31you need secrecy to maintain something, pay attention.
- 16:36When prayer makes you uncomfortable because you
- 16:38already know what God may address, pay attention.
- 16:43When you avoid people who hold you accountable
- 16:45and gravitate toward people who affirm everything
- 16:49you do, pay attention. Those may be signs that
- 16:53resistance is weakening. Don't wait for the harvest
- 16:58to deal with bad seed and its ramifications or
- 17:01consequences. This is where refinement becomes
- 17:05mercy again. God may expose the seed before the
- 17:10harvest. And sometimes we become frustrated because
- 17:14God interrupts something we were enjoying. But
- 17:17what if the interruption is protection? What
- 17:20if God exposes the relationship early? What if
- 17:23God confronts the habit early? What if God makes
- 17:27you uncomfortable early? What if someone asks
- 17:30the difficult question early? What if conviction
- 17:33becomes strong before the consequences become
- 17:36visible? Do not despise that. That may be divine
- 17:41intervention. God may be stopping at the seed
- 17:44level. What would have been devastating at the
- 17:47harvest level? The Holy Spirit often warns early.
- 17:52One blessing of walking with the Holy Spirit
- 17:55is that he does not always wait until disaster.
- 17:58He warns. A discomfort. A scripture. A conviction.
- 18:04A thought that keeps returning. A trusted person
- 18:07asking a question. A boundary you know you need
- 18:11to establish. Sometimes we want dramatic revelation,
- 18:15but the Holy Spirit may simply be saying, Stop.
- 18:19Don't go there. In this conversation, this relationship
- 18:24is becoming dangerous. Don't send that message.
- 18:28Don't keep looking. You need accountability.
- 18:32Tell someone. Walk away. And discipline means
- 18:36responding while the seed is still small. You
- 18:40don't have to prove how strong you are. This
- 18:44connects directly with our previous conversation
- 18:47about discipline. You do not need to keep temptation
- 18:51nearby to prove you are delivered. You do not
- 18:55need to maintain access to what repeatedly weakens
- 18:58you. You do not need to demonstrate that you
- 19:01can handle a relationship that continually moves
- 19:04your boundaries. Joseph ran, and sometimes running
- 19:09is the evidence of wisdom. There are things you
- 19:13overcome by resisting, and there are things scripture
- 19:16tells you to flee. Sometimes the strongest person
- 19:20in the room is the person who knows I should
- 19:24not stay here. Listen to me carefully. This is
- 19:29a call to restore your resistance. What if you
- 19:33recognize yourself in this conversation? What
- 19:37if resistance has already weakened? What if the
- 19:41thing that once disturbed you has become familiar?
- 19:45What if boundaries have already moved? What if
- 19:48you have already watered the seed? Then hear
- 19:51me carefully. This message is not announcing
- 19:54your destruction. It is inviting you back. The
- 19:58fact that God is revealing it may itself be evidence
- 20:02of mercy. You can stop watering the seed. You
- 20:06can close the door. You can confess. You can
- 20:10repent. You can establish the boundary again.
- 20:14You can seek accountability. You can remove access.
- 20:18You can return to prayer. You can return to the
- 20:21Word. You can ask the Holy Spirit to restore
- 20:24sensitivity to your conscience. You can begin
- 20:28strengthening resistance again. God's refining
- 20:32fire does not only expose, it purifies. Don't
- 20:38confuse mercy with permission. Maybe God has
- 20:41protected you from consequences you deserved.
- 20:44Thank Him. Maybe nobody knows. Thank him. Maybe
- 20:48your family is still intact. Thank him. Maybe
- 20:52your ministry survived. Thank him. Maybe your
- 20:56reputation remains. Thank him. Maybe the door
- 21:00is still open. Thank him. But do not turn mercy
- 21:05into permission. Mercy is an invitation to repentance.
- 21:09Mercy says, you still have time to change direction.
- 21:14Mercy gives you another opportunity to protect
- 21:17what compromise was beginning to threaten. And
- 21:20perhaps the most mature response to mercy is
- 21:23not, I got away with it. It is, God gave me another
- 21:28opportunity to get it right. Listen to me carefully.
- 21:33You must protect the seed of purpose. There is
- 21:38another seed in your life, not only the seed
- 21:41of temptation. There is the seed of purpose.
- 21:45There is something God planted in you. A calling.
- 21:48A vision. A family. A ministry. An assignment.
- 21:52A future. And now two seeds may be competing
- 21:56for water. The seed of purpose. And the seed
- 21:59of compromise. Both want attention. Both want
- 22:03access. Both want your time. Both want your imagination.
- 22:08Both want your decisions. And eventually, you
- 22:11must decide which one will I water, because you
- 22:15cannot continually feed what weakens you and
- 22:18expect what strengthens you to flourish. So today,
- 22:23brothers and sisters, look for the seed that
- 22:26weakens your resistance. Do not only examine
- 22:29the big things. Look for the seed. Look for the
- 22:34small compromise. Look for the conversation.
- 22:37Look for the relationship. Look for the repeated
- 22:40thought. Look for the offense. Look for the secret
- 22:44habit. Look for the boundary that keeps moving.
- 22:49Look for what once bothered you, but now feels
- 22:51normal. And ask, what is this becoming? Do not
- 22:56wait until the seed becomes a tree. Do not wait
- 23:00until the spark becomes a forest fire. Do not
- 23:04wait until the private compromise becomes public
- 23:07destruction. Do not wait until resistance disappears.
- 23:11If the Holy Spirit is showing you something,
- 23:14respond while it is small. Close the door. Starve
- 23:19the seed. Restore the boundary. Strengthen your
- 23:22resistance. Return to prayer. Return to the word.
- 23:28Return to accountability. Return to obedience.
- 23:32Because discipline protects vision. And sometimes
- 23:36the greatest act of discipline is refusing to
- 23:38water something that could destroy what God has
- 23:42spent years building. God may be exposing the
- 23:46seed because He is protecting the harvest of
- 23:48your purpose. That exposure is not necessarily
- 23:52rejection. It may be intervention. It may be
- 23:56mercy. It may be refinement. You are not being
- 24:00exposed to be destroyed. You are being invited
- 24:04to surrender what cannot accompany you where
- 24:07God is taking you. The seed may be small, but
- 24:11so was the rudder, so was the spark, and so was
- 24:15the beginning of many things that eventually
- 24:18became enormous. Protect your heart, protect
- 24:21your boundaries, protect your character, protect
- 24:24your vision, and above everything, protect what
- 24:28God is growing within you. You are being refined.
- 24:31You are being strengthened. Your resistance is
- 24:35being restored. And you are being prepared to
- 24:38carry purpose. You are being refined for a purpose.
- 24:43This is Pamoja Ministry, and in our next conversation,
- 24:47we will confront what happens when the seed has
- 24:50been allowed to grow, and when someone's gift,
- 24:54influence, or anointing becomes greater than
- 24:57the character supporting it. Conversation 6 When
- 25:02Character Cannot Carry the Anointing
