- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Why is it that one man has a vasectomy and he's back at work the next morning while another man is still sore and taking it easy several days later?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: A lot of men assume vasectomy recovery is basically the same no matter where you go.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: It isn't.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: After more than 30,000 vasectomies, we can tell you there are three things that can make a big difference in how smoothly you recover.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: And the first one happens during the procedure itself.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: We're vasectomy clinics in Chicago.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: We have five locations throughout Chicago in.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: We've performed more than 30,000 vasectomies.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: And for more than 20 years, our practice has been dedicated exclusively to this one procedure.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Most of our patients are back at work the day after the vasectomy.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Number one, the experience and technique of the physician.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: A vasectomy is a relatively quick procedure, but that does not mean every vasectomy is performed exactly the same way.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Experience matters, technique matters, and being gentle with the tissue matters.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Our physicians perform vasectomies every day.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: This is all we do.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Over thousands and thousands of procedures, we've been able to continually refine our technique with one goal in mind: perform the vasectomy successfully while being as gentle and meticulous as possible.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Because the less unnecessary trauma there is to the surrounding tissue, the easier we expect the recovery to be for the patient.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: That's something we take very seriously.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And for us, that level of care starts before the procedure itself.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Every patient meets with one of our physicians before his vasectomy.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: We don't believe in treating vasectomy like an assembly line procedure where every patient gets the exact same experience.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: We want to know who we're treating.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: We want to understand what the patient needs.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And then during the procedure, our goal is to be as precise, gentle, and efficient as possible.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: That's one of the biggest advantages of having a practice that is dedicated exclusively to vasectomy.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Our physicians are not doing this once in a while.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: They're doing it every single day.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: And when you've performed thousands of vasectomies on all kinds of patients, that experience matters.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: So if you're choosing where to have your vasectomy, it's completely reasonable to ask, how often does the physician perform vasectomies?
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Is vasectomy a major part of the practice, or is it one of many procedures they offer?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And will I actually meet with the physician before the day of my procedure?
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: But even with an experienced physician and a gentle technique, there are two major factors that can change your recovery.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: They have nothing to do with how good your surgeon is.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: If you're considering a vasectomy, you can schedule a consultation with our team.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: We'll examine you, answer your questions, and talk you through what your recovery will look like based on your specific situation.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And if you're not ready yet, subscribe.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: We put out a new video every week answering the questions men ask us every day.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Now let's talk about the second factor, because this one is different for every man.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Number two, your anatomy and medical history.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: We get most of our patients through referrals.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: A friend had his vasectomy with us, a brother, a neighbor, three other guys at work.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And it's very common for a patient to come in and say, My buddy had his done here.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: He said it was easy.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: He went back to work the next day.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And we love hearing that.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Most of our patients do very well, and most are back at work the following day.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: But we also explained something important.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Your recovery may not be exactly the same as your buddy's because your anatomy will not be exactly the same.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Your medical and surgical history will likely not be the same either.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Maybe you've had a hernia repair.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Maybe you've had surgery in that area before.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Maybe you have scar tissue from an old sports injury.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Maybe another physician previously attempted a vasectomy and was unable to complete it.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Or maybe your anatomy is simply a little different.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: None of that automatically means there's going to be a problem.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: It just means we need to know about it.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And this is where our consultation and examination becomes so important.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: We don't want the first time we evaluate your anatomy to be when you're on the table the day of your vasectomy.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: We want to know ahead of time if there's anything we need to account for.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: That may affect how much time we schedule for your procedure.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: It may affect the approach the physician takes.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: And it may affect what we tell you to expect afterward.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: So when you come in for your consultation, tell us your history.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: If you've had surgery, tell us.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: If you've had an injury, tell us.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: If you've had a previous procedure in that area, tell us.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: The more we know before the day of your vasectomy, the better prepared we can be.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: And this is also why comparing your recovery to somebody else's usually isn't very useful.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Your coworker may have felt completely fine the next morning, like nothing ever happened.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: You might be a little more sore, or you might recover even faster than he did.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Most men do very well, but we treat you based on what we see with you, not based on what happened to the guy who referred you.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Now, the first two factors involve the procedure and your anatomy.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: The third one is entirely under your control.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: So number three, what you do afterward.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: We tell our patients something all the time.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: It takes two to tango.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: You're trusting us to do our part, we're trusting you to do yours.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: We can perform the procedure exactly the way we want to, but you still have to follow the recovery instructions we give you afterwards.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: And this is where some men get into trouble because they feel much better than they expected.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: That's a good thing.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: We want you to feel good.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: But feeling good the next day does not mean you should immediately go back to every activity you'd normally do.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Going back to a desk job is different than going back to a job where you're lifting, climbing, carrying equipment, or spending the entire day on your feet.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: We take care of a lot of police officers, firefighters, electricians, plumbers, tradesmen, and other men who do very physical work.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: We love taking care of these patients.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: But if your job is physical, we need to know that so we can give you the right instructions for your situation.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Same goes for exercise.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: If you work out hard every day, tell us.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: If you're a cyclist, tell us.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: If you play competitive sports, tell us.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: We'll explain when you can start increasing your activity and which activities need a little more time.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: For the first week, supportive underwear is important.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: We also give our patients specific instructions about when to begin mild exercise and how to progress as tolerated.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Activities like biking, rowing, and competitive sports need to wait longer.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And you need to follow the instructions we give you about lifting, exercise, and sex.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: The mistake is assuming that because you're feeling good the first few days, you don't need to listen to the instructions anymore.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: That can create soreness and swelling that could have easily been avoided.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: So when our patients tell us afterward, that was so much easier than I expected, we're happy to hear it.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: But we still want them to follow the recovery instructions.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Feeling good is what we want.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: It does not mean the healing process is finished.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: And if you have a question during your recovery, call us.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: That's another part of our practice that's very important to us.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Our patients know how to reach us.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: You don't have to sit at home wondering whether something is normal or not.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: You don't have to search through internet forums trying to compare yourself to somebody you've never met.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Pick up the phone and call us.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: If we can answer your question over the phone, great.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: If one of our physicians needs to see you, we'll have you come in.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: We would always rather hear from you and help you than have you sitting at home worrying.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Recovered does not mean sterile.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: There is one other thing we need to clear up because men confuse these two timelines all the time.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: You can be completely recovered from your vasectomy and still not be sterile yet.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Those are two separate things.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: After the procedure, sperm can still remain in the reproductive tract for a period of time.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: That means you need to continue using contraception until your post-vasectomy semen test confirms there are no sperm present.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: We don't give a patient the all clear just because he feels good.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: We require semen testing.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: The testing is what confirms that the vasectomy was successful.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: And until we give you that all clear, you still need to use birth control.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: This is incredibly important because one of the biggest mistakes a man can make after vasectomy is assuming, I feel fine, so I must be good.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: You may be recovered.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: That does not mean your vasectomy journey is complete.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: For us, the finish line is confirmed sterility.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: So please do not skip your semen testing.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: So why do some men recover faster from a vasectomy than others?
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: There are three big factors.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: First, the experience of the physician and the surgical technique being used.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Second, your individual anatomy and medical history.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: And third, how carefully you follow your instructions after the procedure.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Most of our patients are back at work the next day, and the overwhelming majority tell us afterwards that the experience was much easier than they expected.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: That is exactly what we want to hear.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: And that's why we put so much emphasis on experience, a gentle surgical technique, an individualized consultation, and making sure every patient understands exactly what to do after his procedure.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: We do our part, you do yours.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: And together our goal is to make the entire process as safe, smooth, comfortable, and easy as possible.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: If you're ready to stop researching and actually find out what your vasectomy would look like, schedule a consultation with us.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: We'll examine you, answer your questions, and make sure you know what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: And if you're still comparing practices, watch this one next.
