Latest / Foul Territory / Blue Jays land Okamoto, Imai out for WBC, The Murakami effect
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's begin with big news over the weekend, Kazuma Okamoto
- 0:04Speaker 1: and the Toronto Blue Jays hook up on a four year,
- 0:07Speaker 1: sixty million dollar contract. Kratz surprised that the Blue Jays
- 0:10Speaker 1: come up with Okamoto, the questions about his defense regard
- 0:15Speaker 1: the outfield and even third base to an extent, it
- 0:18Speaker 1: sounded like many teams were interested in him as a
- 0:20Speaker 1: first baseman. The Blue Jays have a first baseman named
- 0:24Speaker 1: Bladdie Junior. So what do you think of the move?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Very surprised.
- 0:28Speaker 3: I mean we talked about a different you know, could
- 0:30Speaker 3: they go Tucker, could they go but Shet? What does
- 0:33Speaker 3: that do to Barger? Well, obviously, now this pushes Barger
- 0:37Speaker 3: out to right field. Barjar was a good third baseman.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Is this new signing going to be just more added
- 0:47Speaker 3: just more added offense, I mean, a similar offense. He
- 0:51Speaker 3: struck out about ten percent of the clip. He dropped
- 0:54Speaker 3: his strikeout percentage last year to from the previous season
- 0:59Speaker 3: five percent, So that's huge. He still has slug I
- 1:04Speaker 3: mean his ops in Japan last year in for the
- 1:09Speaker 3: Yori Giants was over a thousand. Like this is a
- 1:13Speaker 3: huge pickup. It just was very unexpected for me. I
- 1:16Speaker 3: thought if they were going to go somewhere it would
- 1:18Speaker 3: be Bashett or Tucker.
- 1:21Speaker 1: They still can. Yeah, most Sadders are saying irrelevant. Yeah,
- 1:25Speaker 1: so this is truly icing on the cake before they
- 1:28Speaker 1: actually figure out if it's Tucker, Boschette or someone else.
- 1:32Speaker 1: It does sound like Bregman is out of the picture. Yeah,
- 1:36Speaker 1: because they do.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Because they have Barger and they have any Clement they
- 1:39Speaker 4: can kind of bounce around a little bit.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And Okamoto for third. So that's too many third basement.
- 1:44Speaker 4: I think it's Bashett to play second, maybe Short or
- 1:47Speaker 4: Tucker in the off because they also var show in
- 1:49Speaker 4: uh Springer free agents at the end of the year,
- 1:52Speaker 4: so that would kind of lessen if one if those
- 1:54Speaker 4: guys leave, So I don't think it excludes him from doing.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Anything neither, and they needn't let any more than a
- 1:59Speaker 1: righty bat.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yes, and they're feeling it.
- 2:00Speaker 4: You know why they're feeling it because they just went
- 2:02Speaker 4: to the World Series and they were this far from
- 2:04Speaker 4: winning it.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I mean, excuse me, they were this far from winning
- 2:08Speaker 2: the World Series.
- 2:08Speaker 1: We say this a couple of times, but yeah, a
- 2:11Speaker 1: couple of times. Their payroll was the highest it ever
- 2:14Speaker 1: was last year and it doesn't always work out. Ask
- 2:17Speaker 1: the Mets. But they made it five seconds away from
- 2:21Speaker 1: winning a World Series and then they have reinvested it.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I heard they made stupid amounts.
- 2:25Speaker 4: I can only imagine because you saw how excited Toronto was. Yes,
- 2:29Speaker 4: so of course they reinvested, which is huge. Yeah, they
- 2:32Speaker 4: have the whole country. They don't have just a city.
- 2:33Speaker 4: To have a country mind them.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I love Okamodo the bat by the way.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Don't worry about his defense.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:39Speaker 4: And one thing about the Blue Jays, they were really
- 2:41Speaker 4: good defensively, yes, right, Well that's the other part.
- 2:46Speaker 3: That's the other part that surprises me because their base
- 2:48Speaker 3: is such a huge position. Defensively, yes, I get a
- 2:51Speaker 3: shortstop is yes, Catchers, yes, center field is. And they
- 2:55Speaker 3: have some of the best right now, even with Andre
- 2:57Speaker 3: Semenez playing shortstop. You just think about, you know, when
- 3:01Speaker 3: they had Matt Chapman and their and their starters had
- 3:03Speaker 3: the lowest dra in baseball. If it's a question, which
- 3:07Speaker 3: obviously they're like, hey, we're totally fine with it. If
- 3:10Speaker 3: we're really good defensively everywhere else, does it come back
- 3:14Speaker 3: to bite them because you're not gonna you're not paying
- 3:16Speaker 3: a guy fifteen million a year. You're not have a
- 3:18Speaker 3: four year contract to like bring a defensive third baseman in,
- 3:22Speaker 3: And I don't know that there was necessarily one out
- 3:24Speaker 3: on the market. It's not like Bargers won a Gold
- 3:27Speaker 3: Glove this year. It's you know, he played right field
- 3:29Speaker 3: and third base. It's not like Ernie Clement is gonna
- 3:32Speaker 3: win a Silver Slugger or won a Silver Slugger this
- 3:35Speaker 3: past year. He had a ridiculous World Series. But this
- 3:39Speaker 3: is just an example of what we think most teams
- 3:41Speaker 3: should do. You see a window, you don't just like
- 3:46Speaker 3: go through the window. You smash through it, and you
- 3:49Speaker 3: make sure you have enough offense, enough defense, enough pitching,
- 3:53Speaker 3: everything to get back there and win and then win
- 3:57Speaker 3: again and again.
- 3:59Speaker 1: What's the thing that the swat team us is to
- 4:00Speaker 1: open doors a battering ram? Yeah, they're using a battering
- 4:04Speaker 1: ram right now to open there does home.
- 4:06Speaker 2: No one's complaining that the Blue Jays are going to
- 4:08Speaker 2: ruin the.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Sport. Dodgers fans are. There's so many that government over
- 4:13Speaker 1: that weekend, they're like, blue Jays are ruining baseball. I
- 4:17Speaker 1: mean they're being sarcastic, tongue in cheek. They're like Blue
- 4:19Speaker 1: Jay's ruining baseball with them actually trying this offseason. Yeah,
- 4:24Speaker 1: I love it. I mean it adds significant versatility. If
- 4:27Speaker 1: you do get an injury, you're in great shape with
- 4:30Speaker 1: the configuration as long as they're not planning to trade anyone,
- 4:33Speaker 1: and they theoretically will add someone like Bo, Kyle Tucker
- 4:36Speaker 1: or someone else we're not thinking about. Also, I should
- 4:39Speaker 1: mention there is a posting fee, so it's four year
- 4:42Speaker 1: sixty plus about eleven mil. So it's really four years
- 4:44Speaker 1: seventy one mil in terms of money that they're giving out.
- 4:47Speaker 1: They'd give eleven million to his team, the Giants over
- 4:49Speaker 1: in the MPB. But I mean again, I haven't watched
- 4:52Speaker 1: a ton of games. I haven't watched any full games
- 4:54Speaker 1: with him, but I've watched plenty of AB's. Actually I
- 4:57Speaker 1: watched World Baseball Classic he was in last year. He
- 4:59Speaker 1: homeered off or not last year, last time in twenty
- 5:01Speaker 1: twenty three homered off Kyle Freeland. But it's a simple swing.
- 5:04Speaker 1: There's contact, takes, walks, has pop how much pop? Is
- 5:08Speaker 1: it fifteen omer pop? Is it thirty homer pop? There's
- 5:10Speaker 1: pop though, So this fits exactly what the Blue Jays
- 5:14Speaker 1: like as a hitter. It's really what everyone in baseball
- 5:17Speaker 1: should like as a hitter. But you know how, we
- 5:18Speaker 1: talked a lot about the Blue Jays in contact, and
- 5:20Speaker 1: then you get the analytics crid being like, well you
- 5:22Speaker 1: need slug too, and it's like, yeah, they had both.
- 5:24Speaker 1: They had contact and slug. Who fits that O Komodo.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah, here's a good signing for him. I like this signing.
- 5:31Speaker 4: I like this signing a lot, and it gets them
- 5:32Speaker 4: into the Japanese market, which listen, say what you want,
- 5:35Speaker 4: but that is a big deal because they love baseball
- 5:38Speaker 4: and they follow their players, and it brings more money
- 5:41Speaker 4: into the organization.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I mean, show hey, show hey.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Didn't start this because each row was kind of the
- 5:45Speaker 4: first big Nomo was like the first one, right, he
- 5:48Speaker 4: came over with the tornado wind up and all that
- 5:50Speaker 4: with the Dodgers. But then there was a little lull
- 5:52Speaker 4: and then Eachiro hit right, and then the Mariners went
- 5:55Speaker 4: for with Sazaki. They tried to catcher jo Jima, and
- 5:58Speaker 4: then some other teams have tried it. The Yankees tried
- 6:00Speaker 4: out with the Rabu and some of the Matsui right,
- 6:03Speaker 4: but when nim Matsui ta Deki, Godzilla came over and
- 6:07Speaker 4: next thing, you know, and Yankee steed him. There was
- 6:09Speaker 4: signs in Japanese which you've never seen before, right, and
- 6:11Speaker 4: the teams that have done this and done this right,
- 6:14Speaker 4: and then Shohey just took it to another level. Yeah right,
- 6:16Speaker 4: he just he wiped everybody off the board. But the
- 6:19Speaker 4: teams are now starting to learn from the Dodgers. Man,
- 6:20Speaker 4: if we can get a Japanese star, we can make money.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Like he signed for four to sixty that's fifteen a year, okay,
- 6:26Speaker 4: which is a lot of money. But if you think
- 6:28Speaker 4: you get some of the Japanese sponsors behind him, and
- 6:30Speaker 4: he does well on the Blue Jays are off the charts,
- 6:33Speaker 4: playing well, and every Japanese TV is turned in, guess
- 6:36Speaker 4: what that money is.
- 6:37Speaker 2: That's nothing.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Those contracts pay for himself. If the guy is a
- 6:40Speaker 1: star there, and he's been a star in MPB, he's
- 6:42Speaker 1: a name. He's probably been the most consistent hitter in
- 6:45Speaker 1: Japan in the NPB from twenty eighteen to twenty twenty five,
- 6:48Speaker 1: the most consistent dude, and you look at like his
- 6:51Speaker 1: you know the stat cast page that they have, I
- 6:53Speaker 1: don't remember what it's called, but like the Baseball Smount
- 6:55Speaker 1: they have out in MPB. He's like near ninety nine
- 6:58Speaker 1: percent tile or whatever on almost everything. So he's a
- 7:00Speaker 1: star out there. We'll see how that converts. I do
- 7:02Speaker 1: want to bring in Jim Boden right now to comment
- 7:05Speaker 1: on this hue, So let's get right to our resident
- 7:07Speaker 1: GM because JB, I heard that you like the player,
- 7:11Speaker 1: but you have some thoughts on this signing, so would
- 7:14Speaker 1: you like to share them with us? Yeah?
- 7:16Speaker 5: I like the player. I don't like the fit for Toronto.
- 7:19Speaker 5: I don't like that they signed him. I don't like
- 7:22Speaker 5: that they invested seventy million dollars in them. I would
- 7:25Speaker 5: rather see this seventy million go towards Kyle Tucker or Bobaschett,
- 7:29Speaker 5: or both.
- 7:30Speaker 1: For that matter.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Now, I like the player a lot.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Why.
- 7:33Speaker 5: I think he can hit and I think he's got
- 7:35Speaker 5: more power than people think. So I really like the bat.
- 7:38Speaker 5: And I think the bat fits in their blueprint, you know,
- 7:41Speaker 5: the exact blueprint that got them to.
- 7:43Speaker 1: The World Series.
- 7:44Speaker 5: This guy can hit with power, and he puts the
- 7:46Speaker 5: ball in play, he'll draw a walk. So I really
- 7:48Speaker 5: like the player. He can't play third base, okay, he's
- 7:51Speaker 5: a blue arts defender at third and I think one
- 7:53Speaker 5: of the things I loved about this Toronto Blue Jay
- 7:56Speaker 5: team last year is it was the best defensive team
- 7:58Speaker 5: in the American League. And I love the fact that
- 8:01Speaker 5: they could hit for average, they could hit for power,
- 8:03Speaker 5: and they played plus plus defense all over the field.
- 8:06Speaker 5: I think that was their calling card last year and
- 8:08Speaker 5: I loved it. Now you have a blow average defender
- 8:11Speaker 5: at third base. I don't I don't like that at all.
- 8:13Speaker 5: His best position's first base. I think he's a plus
- 8:15Speaker 5: defender at first, but Guerrero owns first base. He lives there,
- 8:19Speaker 5: and he's only going to get to play first if
- 8:21Speaker 5: Guerrero wants a day off or if he gets injured,
- 8:23Speaker 5: which hopefully won't happen. And you can't dach him because
- 8:26Speaker 5: that's George Springer has that spot and Anthony Santandera is
- 8:29Speaker 5: waiting for that spot, and you really can't put him
- 8:31Speaker 5: in the corner outfield. What are you going to put
- 8:33Speaker 5: him in right with santander and left. That doesn't work
- 8:36Speaker 5: for me defensively. So I just don't like the fit.
- 8:39Speaker 5: I was fine with Barger and Clement at third base.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Bring back Bashett sign Tucker. I just like that pathway better.
- 8:46Speaker 5: But don't get me wrong, you never have enough good players.
- 8:49Speaker 5: And if you have that extra money in Canada and
- 8:53Speaker 5: you can be throwing seventy million dollars at a guy,
- 8:56Speaker 5: that's best role now to me is part time first third,
- 9:00Speaker 5: left right DH okay, but as an everyday third basement,
- 9:03Speaker 5: I personally don't like the.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Fit even if they sign a Tucker. Would you feel
- 9:09Speaker 3: the same even if they sign a Tucker? And also
- 9:11Speaker 3: from a GM standpoint, how much do you say, yeah,
- 9:14Speaker 3: we are totally defense, We're really good at defense. It's
- 9:19Speaker 3: okay if we have a little bit below average at third,
- 9:21Speaker 3: or do you say no chance. I'm never being an
- 9:24Speaker 3: elite defensive team. Taking one position where I'm a little
- 9:27Speaker 3: bit below average.
- 9:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll take left field below average and I can
- 9:31Speaker 5: live with that. And I've already got that with Santander.
- 9:34Speaker 5: If I'm the Dodgers, I have or with too I'm
- 9:36Speaker 5: okay with that one corner outfield spot being below I
- 9:39Speaker 5: don't want to be below in the infield.
- 9:41Speaker 2: No, no, no, no.
- 9:42Speaker 5: All those ground balls on the left side of the
- 9:43Speaker 5: infield that they got to be out so they got
- 9:45Speaker 5: to be double plays. For me, I need the range.
- 9:47Speaker 5: I need the glove. I need the accuracy, I need
- 9:49Speaker 5: the consistency. I believe in elite infields to win World Championships.
- 9:54Speaker 5: Now your question about Tucker. Look, I'm a Barger guy.
- 9:57Speaker 5: To be honest, I like him more than most people do.
- 10:00Speaker 5: He's going to be a legit thirty home run bat.
- 10:01Speaker 5: I'm a fan of his. And so look, if it
- 10:04Speaker 5: ends up being Bargara and Okamoto and they're platooning at
- 10:07Speaker 5: third base, I probably can live with that. If that's
- 10:10Speaker 5: going to be the role. Sixty million dollars to platoon
- 10:13Speaker 5: at third Okay, I'll buy into that. If they signed Tucker, sure,
- 10:17Speaker 5: I feel a lot better about it. And then you
- 10:18Speaker 5: have Clement at second with the men, is it short?
- 10:20Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 10:21Speaker 5: That that that works for me. I do think Toronto
- 10:23Speaker 5: needs another left handed hitter, and I do think Tucker
- 10:26Speaker 5: would be the perfect fit there if they can make
- 10:27Speaker 5: that happen too.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Okay, that was my next question.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Doesn't this doesn't mean the Blue Jays can't sign Tucker
- 10:34Speaker 4: if they want to correct. And also, how good can
- 10:36Speaker 4: the Blue Jays be with the team they have right now?
- 10:39Speaker 4: We saw they almost won the World Series last year,
- 10:42Speaker 4: and they've added They've added they've added this offseason. Now
- 10:45Speaker 4: they don't have Bo yet because they could possibly still
- 10:47Speaker 4: bring him back. But One, why does this stop him
- 10:50Speaker 4: from signing Tucker? I don't think it doesn't. Two, how
- 10:52Speaker 4: good can this team be? Because right now on paper
- 10:54Speaker 4: they're pretty damn good.
- 10:56Speaker 5: Yeah, their favorites to win the American League for sure.
- 10:58Speaker 5: I'll get to that in a second. I want to
- 10:59Speaker 5: answer your first question first. So I was told by
- 11:03Speaker 5: the Blue Jays that this does not take them out
- 11:05Speaker 5: of Tucker or Bashett. It takes them out of doing
- 11:08Speaker 5: both Tucker and Bashett, but it doesn't take them out
- 11:11Speaker 5: of doing one or the other. It does take them
- 11:13Speaker 5: out of Alex Bregman. So they still have an opportunity
- 11:17Speaker 5: to sign either Tucker or Bashett. I'm expecting them to
- 11:20Speaker 5: get one of the two. Now, in terms of what
- 11:22Speaker 5: this is meant to the team, I'm gonna focus on
- 11:25Speaker 5: the pitching side. O Kamoto doesn't move the needle for me.
- 11:28Speaker 5: What moves the needle for me is Dylan Cease, only
- 11:31Speaker 5: pitcher in baseball last five years, two hundred strikeouts, thirty starts.
- 11:36Speaker 5: What moves the needle for me is watching Cody Ponce
- 11:39Speaker 5: on video that stuff just plays. If he lives up
- 11:42Speaker 5: the potential, he could be one of the best undervalued
- 11:45Speaker 5: free agents that we've seen sign this offseason. What moves
- 11:49Speaker 5: the needle from me? Tyler Rodgers. I love the left
- 11:51Speaker 5: handed submariner. Give me a different look in the bullpen.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Add bullpen depth, help me improve that setup spot. Love
- 11:57Speaker 5: that a lot. So the three pitchers they brought in
- 12:00Speaker 5: for a team that was a half an inch away
- 12:02Speaker 5: from winning the World Championship. That moves the needle for me.
- 12:05Speaker 5: I think they're the team to beat in right now
- 12:07Speaker 5: in the Al East than the team to beat in
- 12:09Speaker 5: the league. And I think if they were able to
- 12:11Speaker 5: sign Tucker or bring back Bashit it just puts that
- 12:13Speaker 5: double red exclamation point we all have on our iPhones.
- 12:16Speaker 5: It makes it more prominent.
- 12:19Speaker 1: JB. We're gonna do a separate combo coming up in
- 12:21Speaker 1: a second about everything else that's left on the board here,
- 12:24Speaker 1: and there's a lot, but to wrap up the conversation
- 12:27Speaker 1: on some of these international signings, did you feel like
- 12:30Speaker 1: it was weird this year and that it could lead
- 12:34Speaker 1: to some type of battle in the future between NPB
- 12:37Speaker 1: and MLB. Okamoto actually kind of saves things because that's
- 12:41Speaker 1: more of your standard contract. But am I can opt out,
- 12:44Speaker 1: and I believe the posting fee would then be lessened
- 12:47Speaker 1: at that point. Even Takahashi, who he didn't spend a
- 12:49Speaker 1: lot of time on, ends up staying in NPB and
- 12:52Speaker 1: he'll get opt outs, I think, in his contract over there,
- 12:55Speaker 1: so he can then hit the marketing end here and
- 12:58Speaker 1: not have any posting feet is as a league and
- 13:01Speaker 1: PB's goal is to get as much money as possible
- 13:03Speaker 1: for the players they control. It seems like they're getting
- 13:06Speaker 1: less of that. Even with a Murakami, who's a superstar
- 13:09Speaker 1: out there, ends up signing a two year contract that's
- 13:12Speaker 1: a low posting fee, and then if he's good, he'll
- 13:14Speaker 1: get his big contract without a posting fee.
- 13:18Speaker 5: I think, Scott, it just comes down to the evaluation
- 13:20Speaker 5: of Major League Baseball front offices on these players. Let's
- 13:24Speaker 5: take em for a minute. You know, most of the
- 13:26Speaker 5: teams that I talked to were really concerned about his fastball. Yes,
- 13:29Speaker 5: it's gott velocity. A lot of teams tell me it's straight.
- 13:33Speaker 5: They don't like the fact he can't locate it. They're
- 13:35Speaker 5: worried about the command and control of the fastball as
- 13:37Speaker 5: well as the life. They love the breaking stuff. I
- 13:40Speaker 5: had several teams tell me that he's probably better suited
- 13:43Speaker 5: for the bullpen in the back end, that that would
- 13:46Speaker 5: probably be the best role. We can throw the break
- 13:48Speaker 5: and ball most of the time because you know his
- 13:51Speaker 5: split finger and slider or wipe out caliber stuff. Now,
- 13:54Speaker 5: I talked to Joe A Spot of the manager of
- 13:56Speaker 5: the Astros, yesterday morning. He made it very clear to
- 14:00Speaker 5: me that they see him as a starter. Now, when
- 14:02Speaker 5: I talk to other teams about Emi, basically what I'm
- 14:05Speaker 5: told is, hey, he's a four starter with the ceiling
- 14:07Speaker 5: to be a third. So I think that evaluation had
- 14:10Speaker 5: more to do with the contract he ended up signing
- 14:12Speaker 5: than anything else. And then with Murakami, as we've all
- 14:15Speaker 5: talked about on this show, he has great power and
- 14:18Speaker 5: great holes at the plate. Right, So is he Russell
- 14:21Speaker 5: Brandon or is he more than that? How will he
- 14:24Speaker 5: adjust to the pitching over here? No one can argue
- 14:27Speaker 5: the power. There are some people that say is Dave Kingman?
- 14:30Speaker 5: I say not. I say, because of his high on
- 14:33Speaker 5: base percentage, he's going to be better than that. I
- 14:35Speaker 5: think it's going to be a good signing for the
- 14:37Speaker 5: White Sox, but I think best case scenario, he's a
- 14:40Speaker 5: two forty hitter with thirty home runs. So we'll have
- 14:42Speaker 5: to wait and see how they perform. And I think
- 14:44Speaker 5: to answer your question, Scott, how these three guys perform
- 14:47Speaker 5: this year along with the contracts, we'll have a lot
- 14:51Speaker 5: to say of what happens in the future in transactions
- 14:54Speaker 5: with the MPB.
- 14:57Speaker 1: A little bit of coaching news today. Let's start with
- 14:59Speaker 1: don officially joining the Philadelphia Phillies coaching staff as the
- 15:03Speaker 1: bench coach for Rob Thompson. You like it, Kratz. We
- 15:06Speaker 1: talked about it a little bit, what a few weeks ago,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and now it's official. John Hayman also pointed out that,
- 15:11Speaker 1: you know, he's got a long standing, great relationship with Topper,
- 15:15Speaker 1: but also an excellent relationship with Boba Schett. That he
- 15:18Speaker 1: did mention that coach on the bench doesn't usually determine
- 15:24Speaker 1: how a nine figure free agent signing is going to
- 15:26Speaker 1: go down.
- 15:28Speaker 3: I mean, does this mean that the Phillies have no
- 15:29Speaker 3: chance of winning the World Series because Donnie Baseball just
- 15:33Speaker 3: has not won it? I mean, he couldn't have come closer,
- 15:35Speaker 3: Like there was no tougher image than Bobashett patting Donnie
- 15:40Speaker 3: Baseball on the back after they lost, Like, does this
- 15:44Speaker 3: mean the Phillies aren't gonna win? Or does this mean this?
- 15:47Speaker 3: Is it the years that Topper knew Donnie Baseball when
- 15:51Speaker 3: he was with the yank working for the Yankees, Like,
- 15:54Speaker 3: is this the opportunity because of the bench coach? Like,
- 15:58Speaker 3: let's not, let's not blow up. Let's not blow up
- 16:00Speaker 3: what a bench coach does. But he's going to be
- 16:02Speaker 3: an awesome bench coach. The fact that you have a
- 16:04Speaker 3: dude who probably should be managing in the big leagues.
- 16:06Speaker 3: You saw what he helped John Schneider do in some
- 16:09Speaker 3: way or fashion. I think you'll help top her too.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Nelson, who's the GM fairly well in Phillybi.
- 16:17Speaker 2: No, his son isn't his son the GM?
- 16:21Speaker 1: Right?
- 16:21Speaker 2: Isn't the president?
- 16:22Speaker 1: Forgot about that?
- 16:23Speaker 2: I think he has a pretty good relationship with him.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Maybe Also they have this coincidence where they both have
- 16:28Speaker 1: the same last name.
- 16:29Speaker 2: It's weird, Scott. They're trying this new thing where they
- 16:32Speaker 2: they work together but they have the same name. Wow, hey, dad,
- 16:35Speaker 2: do you want a job?
- 16:39Speaker 1: That's good?
- 16:40Speaker 4: But I thought he was retiring, didn't you say he
- 16:42Speaker 4: was retiring from he said he was stepping away.
- 16:46Speaker 1: That was Mike Shilt retiring and then and then not
- 16:49Speaker 1: retiring right and then not retiring addingly, didn't retire waiting.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Did I miss something with Shill?
- 16:55Speaker 1: Yeah, he got a different job, not a manager job,
- 16:57Speaker 1: but he's doing something. He's in the front office consulting.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Shoot, Orioles missed that. I missed that.
- 17:07Speaker 1: We got to get him on at some point.
- 17:08Speaker 2: You got a special assistant to.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Blow down on the next job, special.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Assistant to snaking Abernez's job. Watch out, watch out, prig
- 17:18Speaker 2: Lo stop, don't even don't even say that. Craig's like,
- 17:22Speaker 2: I just got here.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Listen, There's no way a guy like Shill can't not
- 17:27Speaker 3: be in baseball like this guy is when you talk
- 17:30Speaker 3: to him.
- 17:30Speaker 2: He just exudes.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Baseball coaching and like front office like. For him to
- 17:36Speaker 3: not have a job, he must like I was like,
- 17:39Speaker 3: there's no way he doesn't get a job somewhere, and
- 17:41Speaker 3: sure enough he lands lands with the Orioles. He's going
- 17:44Speaker 3: coast to coast. He went Midwest for years, then he
- 17:48Speaker 3: went to the West coast. Now he's going to see
- 17:50Speaker 3: what the East coast. April is like.
- 17:53Speaker 1: More interesting, Daniel Vogelback signs not as a player, but
- 17:57Speaker 1: as the hitting coach for the Milwaukee brew Who saw
- 18:02Speaker 1: that coming?
- 18:04Speaker 2: Did he work?
- 18:04Speaker 4: Can he do something? He worked for the Mets or
- 18:06Speaker 4: somebody last year? Didn't he as a as an assistant
- 18:09Speaker 4: hitting whenn't he the Mets guy? Because I remember seeing.
- 18:12Speaker 2: What he was. I don't want the field.
- 18:14Speaker 4: I know that he was on the co hitting coach
- 18:16Speaker 4: of the Mets because I know he was on the
- 18:18Speaker 4: field right and I know Javaz was there.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Who was there? And then I thought he was like
- 18:23Speaker 2: his assistant or something.
- 18:25Speaker 3: I don't know what he was, but he was definitely
- 18:27Speaker 3: in uniform. I mean immediately after he was done playing.
- 18:31Speaker 3: So yeah, this is the next the next step. I mean,
- 18:34Speaker 3: dudes love he might coach first base sometime too.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 18:38Speaker 3: I mean it's an ex All star dude. Dude could
- 18:42Speaker 3: Rake and he's he's just got that. I don't know
- 18:47Speaker 3: the Brewers. The Brewers, they know who they're hiring. But man,
- 18:51Speaker 3: being a hitting coach in the big leagues not very
- 18:55Speaker 3: secure of a job.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Let's put it that way.
- 18:57Speaker 1: True. By the way, with the Brewers, Matt, there's a.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Hitting coach and then there's there's as system. I saw that,
- 19:04Speaker 4: but Matts he was selling. He was he's on the field.
- 19:06Speaker 4: But the thing about a hitting coach now is every
- 19:08Speaker 4: guy has their own hitting coach that they call, like
- 19:11Speaker 4: whether it's a guy from high school or college or
- 19:13Speaker 4: some guru they think knows everything. Like the hitting coach
- 19:16Speaker 4: now just has to coordinate all the hitting coaches. Twenty
- 19:20Speaker 4: what do they have thirteen hitters on your team. You
- 19:22Speaker 4: got to coordinate all the thirteen hitting private hitting coaches
- 19:25Speaker 4: into one thing to try to make the team work.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Like it's crazy how everybody has their own guy. There
- 19:30Speaker 4: was a big article I saw now long ago on
- 19:32Speaker 4: Schwarber's He has Kevin Long and his dog out every day.
- 19:34Speaker 4: He's one of the best in the world, and he's
- 19:37Speaker 4: got his own guy.
- 19:37Speaker 2: They were taking.
- 19:38Speaker 4: They did an article about how Kyle Schwarber calls this
- 19:40Speaker 4: guy that tells him was about his batsy.
- 19:42Speaker 2: What about Kevin Long? He's pretty good.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Schwarber has been working with that guy since twenty seventeen.
- 19:47Speaker 1: I think, so that's his private guy, his team guy.
- 19:50Speaker 4: The whitting coach job now is to meld what the
- 19:52Speaker 4: private guy says and what the hitting coach of your
- 19:56Speaker 4: team actually thinks their job is way harder than what
- 19:59Speaker 4: he's you know what they're saying about a hitting coaches
- 20:01Speaker 4: to v You know, when hitting coaches do their best
- 20:03Speaker 4: work at the hotel bar after the game. That was
- 20:06Speaker 4: when the hitting coach made his money because everyone's sitting
- 20:08Speaker 4: there and oh, I'm over twelve. Hitting coach like, let's
- 20:12Speaker 4: have another beer, and you're not that bad. No, nobody
- 20:16Speaker 4: goes to the hotel bar to have a beer, so
- 20:18Speaker 4: you can't even have that anymore.
- 20:19Speaker 2: You got to just sit there in the cage all day.
- 20:21Speaker 4: And I remember having conversation with Bret Boone about it, and
- 20:24Speaker 4: he's like, we're facing the guy that has a six CRA.
- 20:27Speaker 4: We're in August. He's like, how about we go treat
- 20:30Speaker 4: this guy like he has a six cra in August
- 20:32Speaker 4: instead of worrying about his fastball ride and his vertical
- 20:35Speaker 4: break and his horizontal this and that.
- 20:37Speaker 2: He's like, it's August. This guy has a six cr
- 20:40Speaker 2: Let's go pound this guy.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Well, do you want to hear what the coaching staff
- 20:43Speaker 1: lay at is now? For the Brewers, Jason Lane was
- 20:46Speaker 1: the third base coach. Now he's been promoted to offense
- 20:48Speaker 1: and strategy coordinator who works with Eric Theesen, who is
- 20:53Speaker 1: now the lead hitting coach. And then there are the
- 20:57Speaker 1: co hitting coaches below him, Gama Martinez and Daniel Vogelback,
- 21:01Speaker 1: who's the third base coason someone else. I guess, wellme
- 21:05Speaker 1: to Ricky Week. He's still there. He's the bench Couddy. Yeah,
- 21:11Speaker 1: Ricky is the bench coach, but they call him the association.
- 21:14Speaker 2: No he did, No, I think he left.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Oh he left? Man, I can't he did.
- 21:18Speaker 2: I think I remember seeing something like that.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Hey, it's January, so I think it's time to start
- 21:22Speaker 1: telling people about this. Remember last year when we did
- 21:25Speaker 1: the BBWAA Awards Scalat it's back. It's back every year
- 21:29Speaker 1: for over one hundred years. But FT is back as well.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Live on the FT YouTube channel, you can see Skeens, Scooble, Otani,
- 21:37Speaker 1: Judge and many more baseball VIPs speaking accepting their awards.
- 21:42Speaker 1: There's great presenters, the whole deal, So make sure you
- 21:44Speaker 1: check that out. Saturday, January twenty fourth. Just wanted to
- 21:47Speaker 1: let you know about it. You can also get tickets
- 21:48Speaker 1: if you want to go in person. But we'll be
- 21:51Speaker 1: there and we'll talk about it. Let's hit hot corner. Okay,
- 21:54Speaker 1: let's start with the Chicago White Sox and their moves
- 21:57Speaker 1: that we covered already, but not with this guy. Yes,
- 22:01Speaker 1: more comedy.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Signed h Mooney Muni, Mooney Muni.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Now you get to watch the greatest power slugger in
- 22:10Speaker 1: the twenty first century for the White Sox or for
- 22:14Speaker 1: obviously in NPB, but now coming over to the White
- 22:17Speaker 1: Sox every day since you watch White Sox games every day,
- 22:19Speaker 1: I can't wait.
- 22:20Speaker 4: Yeah about this Adam Done, No, that didn't work out
- 22:25Speaker 4: so well. I was there for that first year he
- 22:27Speaker 4: had a good career that he had the worst average.
- 22:30Speaker 4: We can't I love Adam Done. I can't even talk
- 22:33Speaker 4: about bad about Adam. He's one of my all time
- 22:35Speaker 4: favorite teammates I ever had in my life. But I mean,
- 22:39Speaker 4: the quote I'll never get is when he goes done.
- 22:42Speaker 4: The reporter goes done, why'd you strike out with a gun?
- 22:44Speaker 2: First and one? Or third and first and third and one?
- 22:46Speaker 4: He goes I thought I might hit into a double play,
- 22:48Speaker 4: so I figured if I only make one out, it's better, right,
- 22:50Speaker 4: Like just things like that that he would say, or
- 22:53Speaker 4: I'll never forget, And man, he had the worst.
- 22:57Speaker 2: His first year there.
- 22:58Speaker 4: He had the worst average of all time, right, and
- 23:00Speaker 4: he needed like five more plate appearances with like three
- 23:04Speaker 4: games ago, and they just didn't play him because they
- 23:06Speaker 4: didn't want him to have that official record.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 23:08Speaker 4: It was so bad, And the next year you actually
- 23:10Speaker 4: had a pretty good year. Dunner was one of the
- 23:12Speaker 4: best teammates. Well, so let's not even put him in
- 23:14Speaker 4: the same category. But I tweeted about this, by the way,
- 23:18Speaker 4: Burcott when they signed him, because finally they did something
- 23:21Speaker 4: to make people notice them. This is what I've been
- 23:24Speaker 4: clamoring about. I did Chuck Garfine at the winter meetings,
- 23:27Speaker 4: I did his podcast, and I talked about this, and
- 23:29Speaker 4: I got bashed on online for saying that they needed
- 23:32Speaker 4: to go try and sign Kylee Skerber, go get some
- 23:34Speaker 4: guys and know how to hit homers and show these
- 23:36Speaker 4: other kids how to do it. I know they had
- 23:38Speaker 4: a nice second half and all this and that, but
- 23:41Speaker 4: if you're getting to be serious, then it's time to
- 23:43Speaker 4: get serious. And this was a nice first step. Now
- 23:45Speaker 4: they need to go out and do a lot of
- 23:46Speaker 4: other things, but this was a nice first step. You
- 23:49Speaker 4: cannot count on every one of your prospects to be
- 23:51Speaker 4: a star. I saw it happened. Listen, col To Montgomery
- 23:55Speaker 4: had a nice second ALP. He hit a lot of homers,
- 23:57Speaker 4: but he struck out a lot and he hit barely
- 23:59Speaker 4: two hundred. Right Chio their catcher, pretty good, kiro their
- 24:03Speaker 4: other catcher, pretty good.
- 24:04Speaker 2: My draft had in the six is ops. No offense
- 24:08Speaker 2: to him, Luis Robert. They're paying twenty million.
- 24:11Speaker 3: I mean, come on, we've discussed this ad nause and
- 24:13Speaker 3: where we don't even need to talk about it anymore, right,
- 24:15Speaker 3: but this is a nice first step.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Now go finish it off, Go sign some real starting pitchers,
- 24:20Speaker 4: trade for some real starting pitchers, and continue this. But
- 24:23Speaker 4: the thing that got me was what Chris gets said
- 24:26Speaker 4: that Jerry Reinsdorf had to be talked into this.
- 24:30Speaker 2: I don't like.
- 24:31Speaker 4: Yes, we talked about this on the show all the time,
- 24:33Speaker 4: and I love Jerry Reinsworf. I've known him forever and
- 24:36Speaker 4: been to my house whatever. I had a lot of
- 24:37Speaker 4: time with Jerry REINSERP. You had to be told that
- 24:42Speaker 4: signing an international superstar from Japan would help your ticket
- 24:46Speaker 4: sales and your ad sales Like this again is the show?
- 24:50Speaker 4: Hey Tani effect in baseball. If you go get the
- 24:52Speaker 4: Japanese guy, the Japanese people will follow, they'll watch, they'll
- 24:56Speaker 4: come to the game, they'll buy jerseys, they'll buy sign
- 24:59Speaker 4: it like, yes, if you buy get better players.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Guess what more people come to the games.
- 25:04Speaker 1: They're gonna make this back. I mean, this is not
- 25:06Speaker 1: the Otani contract. This isn't four hundred fifty two years
- 25:09Speaker 1: present value. This is two years thirty four mils. So
- 25:12Speaker 1: I think they were like, hey, we like this guy.
- 25:14Speaker 1: We think we should sin him. And I don't even
- 25:15Speaker 1: think it'll cost you anything. We might actually prop it off.
- 25:18Speaker 1: A signing like this, that's what's been happening lately with
- 25:20Speaker 1: Japanese players. And he's like, hmm okay, And we could
- 25:24Speaker 1: show the tweet too that plays this out. Sam Falin, yeah,
- 25:29Speaker 1: who covers them, said in three days since the Socks
- 25:32Speaker 1: signed Murakami, this was a couple of weeks ago, season
- 25:34Speaker 1: ticket sales skyrocketing, team getting national attention, social media pages
- 25:38Speaker 1: popping off, international fans getting familiar with the White Sox brand.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Spend money, make money. And I'll just add this, spend money,
- 25:45Speaker 1: make money internationally right now, especially in Japan.
- 25:49Speaker 2: And then you see the last line. Hopefully Jerry learns
- 25:51Speaker 2: a lesson from this.
- 25:52Speaker 4: But I can't figure out Jerry is very smart still,
- 25:54Speaker 4: he's eighty eight, is eighty nine, He's still mentally very sharp.
- 25:59Speaker 2: I saw him at the Winter meetings. He's very sharp.
- 26:00Speaker 2: He's still there.
- 26:01Speaker 4: Okay, but he should have known that he's owned this
- 26:04Speaker 4: team for forty years plus years now, like they took
- 26:07Speaker 4: this to figure out, like if you've got internationally especially right,
- 26:11Speaker 4: Like I don't know that that. That was to me
- 26:14Speaker 4: the biggest thing, Like I love the signing personally, I
- 26:17Speaker 4: really do love the signing. I think it's a great signing.
- 26:19Speaker 4: And if he becomes anything, they're gonna make money hand
- 26:22Speaker 4: over fist for this signing. Okay, So I just that
- 26:26Speaker 4: was the surprise when get said brook Me and Brooks Boyer,
- 26:28Speaker 4: who's the basically the number two in command of the
- 26:31Speaker 4: White Sox behind Jerry for marketing and for everything else
- 26:34Speaker 4: that he needs done, had to go to him and say, hey, Jerry,
- 26:36Speaker 4: if we do this, we can get money from the
- 26:38Speaker 4: international meet you know, media, international sponsors. And he's like okay, wow,
- 26:46Speaker 4: Like yeah, like that was the thing to me, like
- 26:48Speaker 4: let's go White Sox finally.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I couldn't. I don't know.
- 26:58Speaker 3: I'm I'm glad they signed him. It's not the White
- 27:02Speaker 3: Sox winning window. How does this affect the young guys?
- 27:06Speaker 3: I just think it puts another guy out there that, hey,
- 27:09Speaker 3: you know what, we're not afraid to sign some money.
- 27:12Speaker 2: You know you want the.
- 27:13Speaker 3: White Sox to I don't think they're at the point
- 27:16Speaker 3: where they would do the Jason Wirth type of contract
- 27:18Speaker 3: and go out and get somebody that's like, Okay, now
- 27:21Speaker 3: we're going to bring in free agents. So this isn't
- 27:23Speaker 3: that type of contract. But at seventeen a year, I'm
- 27:28Speaker 3: good with it, especially if he can hit some dingers,
- 27:30Speaker 3: like everybody loves dingers.
- 27:32Speaker 4: It's two years, Cratzy, that's not a big commitment. It's
- 27:35Speaker 4: not a ten year, it's two years. It's literally two years.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Like this is fine. You try it out and see
- 27:42Speaker 4: if it works, and you know what, he might hit
- 27:44Speaker 4: forty homers for you the next two years, and guess what,
- 27:46Speaker 4: then you can resign him again and then you might
- 27:48Speaker 4: hit forty more for you for the next five years.
- 27:51Speaker 4: And by the way, justin I love you in the chat.
- 27:53Speaker 4: But Shawn Newcomb and Jared Kelnick signings. They don't move
- 27:56Speaker 4: the needle.
- 27:56Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 27:57Speaker 4: I played with Shawn Newcomb. Jared Kelnick has not panned
- 28:00Speaker 4: out the way people.
- 28:01Speaker 2: That's there.
- 28:01Speaker 1: You go.
- 28:01Speaker 4: You want to talk about prospects that don't become superstars.
- 28:05Speaker 4: Remember he was supposed to be the future Seattle, New York.
- 28:09Speaker 4: He got traded. They were like, oh my gosh.
- 28:11Speaker 2: We traded kel Nick.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Remember Brody van Wagoning got destroyed for that. When he
- 28:14Speaker 1: was running the Mets front office. They were like, oh,
- 28:17Speaker 1: how could you trade their top prospect for Edwin Diaz?
- 28:20Speaker 2: Worked out? All right?
- 28:23Speaker 1: Done for the Mets.
- 28:24Speaker 4: I mean, I'm sorry, Like that's the perfect example. And listen,
- 28:27Speaker 4: I mean listen, Anthony k I like the signing new guy, right,
- 28:31Speaker 4: Sewan Nucomb foign a half million not a bad signing.
- 28:33Speaker 2: I mean, he's not going to move the needle though
- 28:35Speaker 2: for anybody you know, he's lot though.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Yeah, trually he's going to get a chance and then
- 28:41Speaker 1: he'll go back to But yeah, but.
- 28:43Speaker 4: I mean, those don't Those aren't the types of moves
- 28:45Speaker 4: that really push you to the next level. They're nice there,
- 28:49Speaker 4: little pieces, but at some point, again, you got to
- 28:51Speaker 4: go for the big the big names. The teams that
- 28:54Speaker 4: win get the big names. People bars shine in October.
- 28:58Speaker 1: People were excited to get your thoughts, and I think
- 29:00Speaker 1: your thoughts are very positive.
- 29:02Speaker 2: I love this signing. I absolutely love, love, love love
- 29:06Speaker 2: lou signing.
- 29:06Speaker 1: And he signed for way less than people think, because well, there's.
- 29:09Speaker 4: Some people that aren't sold on him because he doesn't
- 29:11Speaker 4: have a high batting average against high velocity. You know
- 29:14Speaker 4: what he's in there for. Hey, listen, dude, go hit
- 29:16Speaker 4: me thirty five to forty homers, Like that's the game now.
- 29:19Speaker 4: I don't care if you strike out two hundred times,
- 29:22Speaker 4: Go hit'eventy five to forty.
- 29:25Speaker 3: How many did How many does it take for him
- 29:27Speaker 3: to win Rookie of the Year. We talked about it
- 29:28Speaker 3: one of the days you were gone, one of the
- 29:30Speaker 3: one hundred days you were gone. But like, if he
- 29:33Speaker 3: hits thirty five, is he slam dunk Rookie of the Year.
- 29:37Speaker 3: If he hits two tens, I mean not if there's
- 29:39Speaker 3: a Nick Kertz out there that goes out and becomes
- 29:41Speaker 3: as one of the greatest rookie years of all time.
- 29:43Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know who else. I mean, I
- 29:45Speaker 4: don't know who else. You never know there could be
- 29:47Speaker 4: somebody from an organization that just blows up. If he
- 29:51Speaker 4: hits forty homers, he's probably gonna be Rookie of the year.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 29:54Speaker 4: If he hits thirty five to forty homers, probably gonna
- 29:57Speaker 4: be Rookie of the year. It's hard to It's hard
- 29:59Speaker 4: to I find a rookie. I mean unless peet Alonso.
- 30:02Speaker 4: Remember pet Alonzo hit what fifty seven is rookie year?
- 30:04Speaker 4: Whatever that crazy number was, was it? Whatever he hit
- 30:07Speaker 4: that year, he broke Judges record.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Remember he and Judge his rookie year too, right, Because's
- 30:11Speaker 1: what I'm saying.
- 30:12Speaker 4: Yeah, like, unless you have someone that kind of does
- 30:14Speaker 4: that trout, yeah, trout.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Someone like that. I don't know. I just think that
- 30:19Speaker 2: I think thirty gets it done.
- 30:22Speaker 3: My thing with the whole like can't hit fastballs and
- 30:24Speaker 3: all that stuff. I played in twenty nineteen with Cody
- 30:28Speaker 3: Ponce and I'm trying to think who else was there,
- 30:30Speaker 3: Joe Adell, Like for Team USA, we played against the
- 30:36Speaker 3: Team Samurai, the Japanese All star team that goes to
- 30:39Speaker 3: all the WBC, went to the Olympics, all that stuff.
- 30:42Speaker 3: We played against them in Japan. It was the exact
- 30:45Speaker 3: same thing like a lot of these guys couldn't hit fastballs,
- 30:50Speaker 3: but you could see they were making adjustments. Seya Suzuki
- 30:54Speaker 3: was on that team. He's done pretty decent and made adjustments.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Akka Akamodo Okamoto was on that team. You know a
- 31:04Speaker 3: lot of these guys were on those teams that I
- 31:07Speaker 3: played against, And yes, they don't do well. But as
- 31:11Speaker 3: AJ would say, like a lot of good hitters, a
- 31:14Speaker 3: lot of big league hitters are okay with having a
- 31:17Speaker 3: deficiency if they never miss the ones that they're looking for.
- 31:22Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 31:23Speaker 3: I'm not saying more comedy's that guy. I'm just saying
- 31:25Speaker 3: I think people are too. They're too like, oh, man,
- 31:28Speaker 3: he can't hit over ninety three or ninety four miles
- 31:31Speaker 3: an hour, whatever that stat was. Well, they're not just
- 31:34Speaker 3: gonna keep pumping him with ten straight fastballs.
- 31:36Speaker 2: And if they do, I have a feeling a.
- 31:39Speaker 3: Big league hitter from another country is gonna make the adjustment.
- 31:43Speaker 3: And on a team like the White Sox, they're gonna
- 31:46Speaker 3: be playing from behind. Teams aren't just gonna be like, oh,
- 31:49Speaker 3: I'm super scared of this guy. I'm gonna pitch around him.
- 31:52Speaker 3: I think they're gonna go after him, and that's why
- 31:53Speaker 3: I think he's going to get his thirty to thirty
- 31:56Speaker 3: five homers.
- 32:00Speaker 2: All love it, ye know.
- 32:01Speaker 1: There's just not There's not a lot of downside here.
- 32:03Speaker 1: The downside is, Okay, he's not a super productive long
- 32:07Speaker 1: term player and not worth locking in for whatever five
- 32:11Speaker 1: seven plus contract. And that's fine. Then you got two
- 32:14Speaker 1: years out of him. You got a lot of pop
- 32:15Speaker 1: on a team that's not making the playoffs right now. Anyway,
- 32:17Speaker 1: it's a rebuilding teams, a great science, butts and seeds.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Here's the upside high I'll say this. Listen, it's in credits.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Knows this.
- 32:25Speaker 4: How many guys have you seen over suit Spencer Jones,
- 32:27Speaker 4: Jason Deming goes. I go back to my time with
- 32:29Speaker 4: the White Sox. Gordon Beckham. Okay, it was like the
- 32:32Speaker 4: ninth overall pick and I love Gordon Beckham, right, great guy,
- 32:35Speaker 4: good friend of mine still to this day. He went
- 32:38Speaker 4: out his first year and had a great, unbelievable first
- 32:40Speaker 4: half of his career, right, and the White Sox over
- 32:44Speaker 4: hyped him in the offseason. He was doing a million
- 32:47Speaker 4: things and then he never had that same success again. Now,
- 32:50Speaker 4: whatever the cost for that was I don't know. Okay,
- 32:53Speaker 4: he had a nice career, but he never became the star. Right,
- 32:56Speaker 4: that's what you worry about when you see guys and
- 32:59Speaker 4: I hope and I hope and pray it doesn't happen
- 33:01Speaker 4: to Montgomery and Teal and Kiro and Mydrath and all
- 33:04Speaker 4: these guys. Right, But now they have been attendee, they
- 33:07Speaker 4: have more Kami, they have some at least a couple
- 33:09Speaker 4: guys around that, you know. I know Murakami hasn't played
- 33:12Speaker 4: in the big leagues, but at least he's played in
- 33:14Speaker 4: big games and he's hit home runs, and he could
- 33:16Speaker 4: show some of these younger guys how to do it.
- 33:19Speaker 2: And that's what you need.
- 33:20Speaker 4: You need guys around that can keep guys on their
- 33:22Speaker 4: toes and ready and teach them how to be major
- 33:25Speaker 4: league baseball players.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Right. You can't just have a team full of kids.
- 33:28Speaker 1: That doesn't it doesn't work. Now. You need the blend.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Every good team has a blend. That's always what happens. Okay,
- 33:34Speaker 1: let's get to a baby signing from the weekend. Paul
- 33:37Speaker 1: DeYoung still going strong, a minor league contract with the
- 33:41Speaker 1: Yankees with the major league invite to camp if he
- 33:44Speaker 1: makes the team, he gets a million bucks. Last year
- 33:45Speaker 1: he signed for a one year deal for a million bucks,
- 33:48Speaker 1: So this is insurance to have more options for Anthony Volpi.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Last year it was the deal with the Nationals for
- 33:56Speaker 1: a million bucks. This year it's with the Yankees. Remember,
- 33:59Speaker 1: Volpi is going to start late to his season, and
- 34:03Speaker 1: to me, this is just another statement from the Yankees
- 34:08Speaker 1: that they believe Volpi is going to be their shortstop.
- 34:12Speaker 1: So they're just yeah, they've got cabi Ero, They've got
- 34:15Speaker 1: Deyong if he makes the team, I get can Rosario
- 34:19Speaker 1: play some short maybe he has? Yeah, So you've got
- 34:22Speaker 1: those guys to fill in for a month and change,
- 34:25Speaker 1: and then Volpi comes back and they hand the keys
- 34:27Speaker 1: back to him. For fans that desperately want them to
- 34:29Speaker 1: go find a shortstop, it does not appear to be
- 34:32Speaker 1: in the cards. They do. They love him. Why are
- 34:35Speaker 1: you smirking?
- 34:37Speaker 3: Because Twitter, Well, AJ was in Africa Twitter Yankees. Twitter
- 34:42Speaker 3: was eviscerating me and comparing my baseball reference page to
- 34:46Speaker 3: a Rod's baseball reference page about my comments that you
- 34:50Speaker 3: know what, Velpi has been more productive than Dansby Swanson
- 34:54Speaker 3: at this point in his career, so maybe let it
- 34:57Speaker 3: play out. We'll see, we'll see. I mean it could
- 35:00Speaker 3: be worse to me. I like the signing you have Kaby.
- 35:03Speaker 3: I think Kabierra will play more than we'll play more than.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Paul de Young.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Paul de Young, he came off last year, He came
- 35:11Speaker 3: off of hitting a twenty twenty four home run season,
- 35:14Speaker 3: and he only got a million dollars from the Nats
- 35:17Speaker 3: to do what maybe be there in cases C J
- 35:21Speaker 3: Abrams kind of thing, like I really like this. He's
- 35:24Speaker 3: a professional player. You never heard anything bad about him.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Did you play with him?
- 35:29Speaker 3: Aj or was he not there quite yet? He's probably
- 35:32Speaker 3: no Young? No, de Young was younger, but he played
- 35:34Speaker 3: third base with the Nats last year. So I forget
- 35:36Speaker 3: and did okay. But by the way I want to
- 35:39Speaker 3: I just want to mention this. I didn't see all
- 35:40Speaker 3: this on Twitter because I was just in a country,
- 35:42Speaker 3: Tanzania that doesn't allow Twitter, so you can't you can't
- 35:46Speaker 3: even go on x Twitter.
- 35:48Speaker 4: It doesn't do anything. So as soon as you land
- 35:50Speaker 4: in Tanzania, it's nothing that's weird.
- 35:55Speaker 3: It's none for Tanzania. You can't even it doesn't do anything.
- 35:58Speaker 3: My son was like, oh my good to Get my
- 36:00Speaker 3: Bears News.
- 36:02Speaker 1: No Twitter trolls in Tanzania.
- 36:04Speaker 4: There are definitely no Twitter trolls. It's Twitter. And there's
- 36:08Speaker 4: another one that there's two of them that are banned,
- 36:10Speaker 4: TikTok because no, it wasn't TikTok, because TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp.
- 36:21Speaker 4: There's like five of them that agreed to whatever the
- 36:25Speaker 4: terms were that Tanzania needed them to so they would
- 36:28Speaker 4: still allow them. But I guess because it said Twitter
- 36:31Speaker 4: uses allows nudity on their app x, so they said
- 36:35Speaker 4: that's why. And also because they said there was people
- 36:39Speaker 4: protesting against the leaders of Tanzania, I don't know whatever,
- 36:43Speaker 4: and they wanted to make sure that they were censored.
- 36:45Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 36:46Speaker 4: It was a long whole thing. But when I landed,
- 36:48Speaker 4: I was like, oh, let me check my Twitter and
- 36:49Speaker 4: see what's happening. And it didn't do anything, and I
- 36:52Speaker 4: was like, wait, what the hell's happening here? This is
- 36:55Speaker 4: really strange, crazy, And so people were wishing me happy
- 36:57Speaker 4: birthday on Twitter and I was like, oh, sorry, I
- 37:01Speaker 4: didn't see these until I got back to the country
- 37:03Speaker 4: that allowed Twitter.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Cancer don't get Twitter, nos do not. Yeah, that's what
- 37:12Speaker 2: he said.
- 37:12Speaker 1: That's what he said.
- 37:14Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 37:16Speaker 1: That's what he said.
- 37:20Speaker 6: Paralta is attractive not only to teams like the Yankees
- 37:24Speaker 6: and the Mets and the Braves and others who would
- 37:27Speaker 6: be classified as big market, but even small market teams
- 37:31Speaker 6: can afford him, and they're in the mix as well.
- 37:34Speaker 6: Do I expect Paralta to get traded? I would say yes,
- 37:37Speaker 6: I do expect that to happen. I expect the Brewers
- 37:40Speaker 6: to get pushed to the point where they feel like
- 37:43Speaker 6: they're comfortable doing it, and if they get a major
- 37:45Speaker 6: League ready starting pitcher in return, they would have some
- 37:49Speaker 6: depth in that rotation. They actually already have depth. It's Woodriff,
- 37:53Speaker 6: it's Miserowski, and it's Priester to start that rotation, and
- 37:56Speaker 6: then they have a bunch of other candidates that they
- 37:59Speaker 6: feel good about. If they got one more, they feel
- 38:02Speaker 6: even better. Even without Freddy Peralta, who of course has
- 38:06Speaker 6: been immensely important to that team over the years and
- 38:09Speaker 6: coming off arguably his best year.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Freddy Peralta, will he or won't he go? The latest
- 38:15Speaker 1: from Ken sounds like he will be training going. That's big.
- 38:19Speaker 4: He's a cheap guy who's making an eight eight million
- 38:21Speaker 4: this year for a guy that was unbelievably good last year.
- 38:25Speaker 1: He's a one.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Why would the Brewers do this? I know they can
- 38:27Speaker 2: get some players.
- 38:30Speaker 1: After this year. He's gosh, I know it just it
- 38:32Speaker 1: just hurts you.
- 38:33Speaker 2: It hurts your heart.
- 38:35Speaker 1: He's gone after this year.
- 38:36Speaker 4: If you throw an extension offer for five years one hundred,
- 38:39Speaker 4: you think he would turn that down?
- 38:40Speaker 1: Yes, okay, I do.
- 38:42Speaker 2: I'm not there.
- 38:43Speaker 1: I know.
- 38:43Speaker 2: I'm just saying.
- 38:45Speaker 1: I mean, it doesn't hurt to throw things out there,
- 38:47Speaker 1: but if you're going to do that, you have to
- 38:49Speaker 1: do it sooner. That's I know they did sign and
- 38:54Speaker 1: I think Freddy would have done another one. But you
- 38:56Speaker 1: can't do it with a year to go. I mean
- 38:58Speaker 1: you can, but then at the number is close to
- 39:00Speaker 1: free agent number. If you did it two years ago,
- 39:02Speaker 1: the number could be attractive. Yeah, you're right, that's the
- 39:05Speaker 1: whole thing. I mean, I think you can carry guys.
- 39:08Speaker 2: So then where does he get traded? Yankees?
- 39:11Speaker 1: They're definitely trying, but I think almost anyone's trying.
- 39:13Speaker 4: For Freddy Pearl for Yeah, White Sox, Hello, White Sox.
- 39:19Speaker 1: I don't think it'll be the White Sox for one season,
- 39:21Speaker 1: but a team that's in this year. You got to
- 39:23Speaker 1: be in it this year. You think you're winning, you
- 39:25Speaker 1: think you're getting to the playoffs and doing damage this year.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Then you're trading for Freddy per Altocrats because the asking
- 39:30Speaker 1: price is going to be high. He also will get
- 39:32Speaker 1: a qualifying offer after this season if he's traded before
- 39:35Speaker 1: the season, so that gets factored into the price. So
- 39:38Speaker 1: a team will have to give up someone, you know,
- 39:40Speaker 1: a pick that's worthy of that, they make you pay
- 39:43Speaker 1: for that, and then you trade the prospects or whatever
- 39:46Speaker 1: you think the value is of the player on top
- 39:47Speaker 1: of that.
- 39:49Speaker 3: Rewind back. I didn't hear what you guys said because
- 39:51Speaker 3: my screen froze. But Cormyn Burns twenty twenty three, Like
- 39:58Speaker 3: that's exactly I mean twenty twenty four to the Orioles,
- 40:01Speaker 3: Like if you're, oh, what's it gonna cost?
- 40:03Speaker 2: Was it is? What's gonna cost?
- 40:05Speaker 3: Except I they think Corbyn Burns made fourteen or sixteen
- 40:10Speaker 3: that year in arbitration. Freddie P is making half Freddy
- 40:16Speaker 3: P is gonna make hay and that means a lot
- 40:17Speaker 3: to teams. But hey, you know what I I hated
- 40:23Speaker 3: for my Milwaukee Brethren that they that they would lose
- 40:27Speaker 3: Freddy P.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Just I get it.
- 40:29Speaker 3: They have depth, they do, but man, you can't because
- 40:33Speaker 3: he's he's really he's really turned into he took another
- 40:37Speaker 3: step next this this past.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Year he did.
- 40:42Speaker 2: True.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, there are too many teams that need starters.
- 40:47Speaker 1: This is too attractive. The Orioles could make an offer.
- 40:50Speaker 1: I know they've already traded away a bunch of prospect
- 40:54Speaker 1: capital and it's easier for them to spend, but they've
- 40:55Speaker 1: also spent a lot. I mean, they could make a play.
- 40:58Speaker 1: They've matched up with the Brewers the past. Don't rule
- 41:01Speaker 1: it out. Is it like.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Yankees, Brewers, Yankees, Orioles, Mets Nets.
- 41:07Speaker 4: There's some teams out there that could make a move
- 41:10Speaker 4: for Freddy that would definitely Cubs would I mean the
- 41:12Speaker 4: would probably.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Oh yeah, the Cubs would. Yeah, they wouldn't trade him
- 41:14Speaker 1: in the Cubs. The Cubs would love to get Freddy P.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Doesn't cost much in the Cubs.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Or what about the break.
- 41:22Speaker 1: What won't happen breaks? Wow?
- 41:25Speaker 2: Okay to me, I think this is the Yankees got
- 41:30Speaker 2: to be the Yankees.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Right Well, I don't know if it has to be,
- 41:34Speaker 1: because it depends on how they match up. The Brewers
- 41:40Speaker 1: might say, hey, we don't love the prospects. You're throwing
- 41:42Speaker 1: our way.
- 41:44Speaker 3: True, but I mean they just they offloaded Collins already.
- 41:49Speaker 3: Are they do they need to restat restock in the outfield?
- 41:53Speaker 2: Do they need to.
- 41:56Speaker 1: Like you guys?
- 41:59Speaker 4: Here's a better question. Is this the year with the Brewers?
- 42:04Speaker 4: Were they finally lost too much and they can't do
- 42:06Speaker 4: it again?
- 42:06Speaker 1: Oh and then they don't make the playoffs?
- 42:08Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 42:08Speaker 2: Is this the year?
- 42:09Speaker 4: Because for years we've been people have been saying this
- 42:11Speaker 4: is the year. Is just at some point it all
- 42:13Speaker 4: it comes.
- 42:13Speaker 1: To this isn't the year. And I'll tell you why.
- 42:16Speaker 1: They actually have a number of starters that will be
- 42:18Speaker 1: back that can It's not going to fill the place
- 42:21Speaker 1: of Freddie p but they do have many starting pitching
- 42:23Speaker 1: options there. They're farm systems in a better place the
- 42:26Speaker 1: last few years, and I think that's what's taken them
- 42:28Speaker 1: again to this next level of winning the division. And
- 42:30Speaker 1: here's the most important part. Cardinals are going to be
- 42:33Speaker 1: way worse. Reds have done nothing. Cubs have done nothing
- 42:37Speaker 1: but rebuild a bullpen that was good and now fill that.
- 42:39Speaker 1: But they haven't replaced Tucker or done much so where.
- 42:43Speaker 1: I mean, there's competition, but it's not like you look
- 42:46Speaker 1: in your life. What's the team I'm missing. Pittsburgh got
- 42:51Speaker 1: a little better, but it's a little better. Yeah, just
- 42:54Speaker 1: a little better for me. You think they got a
- 42:57Speaker 1: lot better. I think they got a little think they
- 42:58Speaker 1: got a little better than a little. Okay, they got better,
- 43:01Speaker 1: but I still think the Brewers are the team to
- 43:03Speaker 1: beat in the division right now. Okay that's me.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Tell let's you a baseball. Pakodo says, I don't care
- 43:10Speaker 2: about the wins. I mean wins they're going to adult.
- 43:13Speaker 1: What is that?
- 43:16Speaker 2: What does BEM have for their win total right now?
- 43:18Speaker 1: I don't know, but we can check. We can check.
- 43:20Speaker 1: We're doing that segment in a second. One other thing
- 43:22Speaker 1: that just came through is am I in his press
- 43:26Speaker 1: conference said he will not pitch for Team Japan in
- 43:30Speaker 1: the WBC. He wants to get acclimated but his teammates
- 43:32Speaker 1: without a disruption during spring training. And then Chandler Rome
- 43:36Speaker 1: also tweeted he wants to prioritize getting used to things
- 43:38Speaker 1: in his first year. Wait, I'm going to add to that.
- 43:41Speaker 1: I want to prioritize my free agent year. He's trying
- 43:45Speaker 1: to show that he's a one to fifty mil pitcher
- 43:48Speaker 1: and not a sixty three or whatever. The number is
- 43:50Speaker 1: right to all of these major league teams that just
- 43:53Speaker 1: said me, we don't really believe in you stuff wise,
- 43:56Speaker 1: if he can throw strikes, I think he could be
- 43:59Speaker 1: a top end starter, right, And most teams just now said, eh,
- 44:02Speaker 1: you're more of a four right with maybe three upside.
- 44:06Speaker 1: He's trying to prove he's a a two. And then
- 44:10Speaker 1: if you go back into the market as a two
- 44:12Speaker 1: with that kind of stuff and upside, then you're now
- 44:14Speaker 1: one hundred mili plus player. So for him, it's spring training.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Major leagues. Screw the wb SI so much.
- 44:21Speaker 4: Is Team Japan gonna get hurt? I mean, I know
- 44:23Speaker 4: Isoto playing for Team Japan.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Yamamoto is pitching, show Hey, I don't know if he's pitching,
- 44:28Speaker 1: but he's playing. But he's playing.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Then, But then is like Murkami probably won't play for teams.
- 44:34Speaker 1: And position players are an easier sell I think, is
- 44:36Speaker 1: it though?
- 44:37Speaker 4: Because these guys are coming over to the new team.
- 44:39Speaker 4: A lot of times guys don't want to do it
- 44:41Speaker 4: in their first year because they're getting acclimated to a
- 44:43Speaker 4: new team and everything.
- 44:44Speaker 1: This is a big part of a question.
- 44:46Speaker 4: I know, that's what I'm saying. These are big names
- 44:48Speaker 4: for Team Japan. That's why I'm wondering if these guys
- 44:52Speaker 4: all say, hey, we're not doing.
- 44:53Speaker 1: It, they get a lot of pressure.
- 44:58Speaker 4: See the thing about Team Japan that they we also
- 45:00Speaker 4: do is they go like a month early if you remember,
- 45:02Speaker 4: and they start practicing like now.
- 45:04Speaker 1: But this is where you have leverage to say, listen,
- 45:06Speaker 1: I just signed with the new team. I'll play, but
- 45:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna play under my terms. I'm not doing the
- 45:10Speaker 1: whole song and dance and everything else.
- 45:13Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 45:13Speaker 1: It's interesting they have more leverage the guys. They also
- 45:15Speaker 1: just won last time around, So I think Team Japan's like,
- 45:19Speaker 1: we'll take the talent and if you need to work
- 45:21Speaker 1: around your schedule a little bit, we'll do it. Okay,
- 45:26Speaker 1: but we'll see. But no, inn It's interesting.
- 45:28Speaker 4: It's just an interesting thought on because Team Japan had
- 45:31Speaker 4: all these guys and now a lot of them have
- 45:32Speaker 4: come to the States and now what happens to their
- 45:35Speaker 4: teams is still as good as it was. And I
- 45:37Speaker 4: still want listen, I still want show hey, facing whoever
- 45:41Speaker 4: the best player is on Team USA in the finals
- 45:44Speaker 4: with the game on the line, like you did with
- 45:46Speaker 4: Mike Trout last time. Unbelievable judge, judge bottom of the Trout,
- 45:52Speaker 4: not judge, No, no, this time, this time, I'm talking
- 45:55Speaker 4: this time.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Right, show Heber's judge would be awesome, Yes.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Right, bottom of the night, tie game, one run lead,
- 46:00Speaker 2: whatever it is, something like that. That's cool.
- 46:03Speaker 1: But I don't know if we'll show. Hey, we mate,
- 46:05Speaker 1: We'll see. Yeah,
