- 0:00History is strange. It's alien.
- 0:02And it won't. Give us what we would like to.
- 0:04Have Richmond Transmission and Auto Service this hour sponsor
- 0:11the program as Dave Bowman is with us and Tuesdays at 8:00
- 0:15Dave Bowman brings us. Dave does history on Bill Mick
- 0:19live and bringing it home this morning as it's the anniversary
- 0:24of the statehood of Florida. Thanks for being here Dave.
- 0:27Fun hours, fun, fun. 2 hours before we got here.
- 0:30Thanks for being part of that. Yeah, the the only thing I would
- 0:33add to that is one of the things that I do do is I teach
- 0:36podcasting. So if somebody's interested in
- 0:40doing that, don't spend thousands of dollars to learn
- 0:42how to podcast. Just drop me an e-mail Dave, at
- 0:45the Dave bowmanshow.com. I've worked with Royce Bartlett
- 0:48and others as well so. Yeah, and and they've renowned
- 0:52at this and and technically excellent, knows the tech side
- 0:55of it and getting everything put together and does a good job.
- 0:58The other thing I would mention before we go into Dave does
- 1:01history is while you had incidents of management trying
- 1:05to tell you what to talk about or how you needed to do your
- 1:08show throughout. And and this is a credit to the
- 1:12managers I've had, they've never directed me on a topic.
- 1:15They've never forced guests or the like on me.
- 1:20We don't do sold interviews here.
- 1:22I've had sales people say I want to put my client on your show.
- 1:25Not going to happen. You want your client wants to
- 1:27sponsor my show, it's a different story.
- 1:29And I might use them as a preferred guest when their topic
- 1:32is on and and play for us, but it it we don't, I don't do paid
- 1:36interviews and it's just not part of what we do here.
- 1:40On the other hand, they've never told me what to do or how to do
- 1:43it. And there's another reason for
- 1:45that, which is management wants you responsible for what you put
- 1:48on the air, and they want to be able to have plausible.
- 1:50Deniability. Yeah.
- 1:53Can't say I've had the same experience but.
- 1:55Yeah. And, and, and no, it was
- 1:57different for you and I, and I think that might be they
- 2:00perceived me as coming from radio since I came from here to
- 2:03Modesto. They perceived you as coming out
- 2:06of the community and needed to learn radio.
- 2:08Maybe that could have been part of what went on there as well.
- 2:10Yeah, we had that conversation once, too.
- 2:13Yeah. So you guys think I'm just some
- 2:15idiot that wandered in here off the street and said hey, I need
- 2:17a job? Yeah, exactly wrong.
- 2:20We begged him to come join us is what we did.
- 2:22And and of course, they had a smart operations manager in
- 2:25Modesto at the time who hired Dave.
- 2:27You're welcome. And anyway, let's get you to
- 2:32Dave does history. What do you got buddy in?
- 2:331845 Florida What would become the state of Florida was far
- 2:39from what it is to that it was. It was sun soaked, but it wasn't
- 2:45bustling. No theme parks, no high rise
- 2:48condos, no snowbirds flocking S for the winter.
- 2:51It was a rugged frontier, a lot of swamps, a lot of wild
- 2:55terrain, probably a lot of alligators.
- 2:58The population was barely 66,000 people, and that included both
- 3:02free and slaves in that number. The economy was cotton
- 3:09plantations, a lot of the land was still uncharted wilderness.
- 3:12Seminole wars were ongoing and travel across the state, which
- 3:17now seems easy, was anything but convenient.
- 3:21Orlando, Yeah, yeah. While modern Florida is known
- 3:25for its culture, its economic power, and its massive
- 3:27population. Florida, this day in 1845 and
- 3:32yesterday, March 3rd, 1845, was isolated, underdeveloped, and
- 3:37still struggling to define itself.
- 3:40And despite these stark differences, Florida's journey
- 3:43to statehood was a pivotal moment in U.S. history.
- 3:47On Excuse Me on March 3rd, 1845, just before he left office,
- 3:53which would be today, March 4th, 1845, John Tyler signed the
- 3:58declaration of Florida Statehood and officially Florida became
- 4:03the 27th State of the Union. Now at the time it was more than
- 4:08just a formality, it was a strategic move.
- 4:15Understand that Florida had been trying to become a state for
- 4:19some time. The problem was that the
- 4:23politics of the United States in 1845 even were divisive, and
- 4:29before Florida could be admitted into this nation as a state,
- 4:34there had to be a counterbalance somewhere else.
- 4:37This is something we've talked about with Puerto Rico becoming
- 4:40a state. You're automatically adding two
- 4:43Democrat senators if you do that.
- 4:45What's the counterbalance to that?
- 4:48Same thing in Florida. Florida's coming into the Union
- 4:50as a slave state. So there has to be a, a, a Free
- 4:53State before Congress or the president will approve this.
- 4:57But on March 3rd, 1845, the culmination of decades of
- 5:04conflict and negotiation, Florida finally becomes a state
- 5:11that's just the beginning of its time as a state in the United
- 5:15States. But long before that, Florida
- 5:19had a rich and exciting history that really gets ignored
- 5:25sometimes. And that's unfortunate because
- 5:27there are some great stories out of the history of Florida.
- 5:32And we pick them up when we continue in just a minute on
- 5:34WMMB, Dave Bowman with us. And we'll note just real
- 5:38quickly, another thing that we tend to do in this business that
- 5:41maybe doesn't get done and a lot of others is we work when we're
- 5:45sick. And Dave's a little under the
- 5:46weather today. So if you hear the occasional
- 5:48cough or pause, Dave's getting through it and running through
- 5:52it like a trooper for us. Yeah, head colds, man.
- 5:55Springtime in Washington. So one of the things that I
- 5:59really enjoy about going to school, one of the first classes
- 6:04I took was U.S. history 1500 to 1865.
- 6:07Had a wonderful professor and he took a different approach of
- 6:11things. And one of the things he did was
- 6:13instead of trying to isolate every event and renting, he
- 6:17picked 3 people and we experienced United States
- 6:21history through those three people.
- 6:24One of them was Frederick Douglass.
- 6:26One of them was a woman by the name of Martha, Martha Ballard.
- 6:29But the very first one we chose he chose was a guy by the name
- 6:32of Kabiza Devaka. Maybe it's a name you've heard.
- 6:37Maybe it's a name you haven't heard.
- 6:39But if you're from Florida, you should know the name Kabiza
- 6:42Devaka. He is arrives in Florida in
- 6:461528. He's part of the Novarez
- 6:50expedition, which is coming to Florida because after Ponce de
- 6:54Leon discovers it in 1530, discovers Florida like it wasn't
- 6:58there before, you know, but he discovered it.
- 7:02Course, as you all know, he he was looking for the fountain of
- 7:06youth, right? Found it right here on the Space
- 7:11Coast, I told. Right.
- 7:13Turns out that that was a myth. He names it La Florida, land of
- 7:17flowers. But then he just kind of wanders
- 7:19off. And so Spain sends some people a
- 7:21guy by the name of Navares to actually explore the place. 1 of
- 7:25Navares captains is a guy by the name of Cabeza de Vaca.
- 7:29This expedition is anything and everything that can go wrong
- 7:36does go wrong. Bill.
- 7:38They start with site 400 people on this expedition.
- 7:42They go to Cuba to reposition, to resupply, get ready to go to
- 7:47Florida. Half the expedition says, you
- 7:50know what, we really like Cuba, we're staying here.
- 7:54And they jump ship. The rest of them continue on.
- 7:59They land just outside of Tampa Bay.
- 8:01Now, part of the joy of this book when you're reading it is
- 8:05he's describing these areas and you're looking at them and
- 8:08you're trying to figure out where is this?
- 8:10Because he doesn't know where the city of Tampa is.
- 8:12He doesn't know where Port Saint Lucie is.
- 8:14He doesn't know where any of this stuff is.
- 8:16To him, it's just the coastline of Florida.
- 8:21And so he's trying to describe these things to you as they
- 8:25land. One of the most interesting
- 8:29events happens to me. They meet with some of the
- 8:32indigenous peoples there, the Temuka and the Apoliche tribes.
- 8:37And being the Spanish, they, they take kind of a different
- 8:41approach to cultural diversity. Instead of looking at what these
- 8:46people are doing and going, oh, isn't that a great expression of
- 8:50their faith and their understanding of how the
- 8:52universe works? And you know what these things
- 8:55mean. They immediately look at what
- 8:57these people are doing, one of which is they put their
- 9:00ancestors in these decorated boxes and preserve them as part
- 9:06of the memory and to honor these people who have passed on.
- 9:10The Spanish under navares decide that this is offensive to God
- 9:16and they set them on fire. Nobody expects the Spanish
- 9:22Inquisition. Apparently not even in Florida
- 9:24in 1528. It's almost like from that point
- 9:30on that the Native American gods have decided that, well, you
- 9:38have offended us and this expedition becomes an absolute
- 9:43disaster. People are killed, people get
- 9:47lost, ships get wrecked. 450 people set out from Spain on
- 9:52this expedition with Nevarez. The only one that will make it
- 9:56back eight years from now is the vodka.
- 10:00And he will only make it back Bill after he wanders around the
- 10:04American from all the way from Tampa to modern day Albuquerque
- 10:10and back. Wow.
- 10:12He's the only one that will make it back after that disastrous
- 10:16introduction to Florida. What, because he ran to
- 10:19Albuquerque when the fight started?
- 10:22Yeah, it might have been a warning, but then again, it was
- 10:27just the beginning, really, of exploration of both Florida and
- 10:31America. And we'll continue with this in
- 10:36moments with Dave Does history on Bill Mick live.
- 10:38We'll let you in the conversation in our final
- 10:40segment of the hour. So prehistoric Florida laid out
- 10:44for it. Well, OK, not prehistoric, but
- 10:46close to it as far as we're concerned anyway.
- 10:49And then we'll see about becoming a state and what
- 10:51happened then. Ahead with Dave Does history on
- 10:54Bill Mick live. It's a take on history you won't
- 10:58find anywhere else. Dave does history on Bill Mick
- 11:02live. And on the show page today,
- 11:05links to all of Dave's stuff. Dave does history plausibly
- 11:08live. And of course, what the frock
- 11:10that started our conversation this morning on the show.
- 11:13But Dave bringing us some Florida history today.
- 11:16Dave, I'll kick it back at you, buddy.
- 11:19So when we left, Davaca had finished his eight-year sojourn
- 11:24across the southern United States.
- 11:27Fascinating story. It's a great book.
- 11:29If you can get it, it is available online and in audio
- 11:34format. But what you'll find yourself
- 11:36doing is trying to figure out where he is because he has none
- 11:39of your modern landmarks. Your notes will probably tell
- 11:43you where he is in the book, but that's that's cheating, you
- 11:47know? You got to try to figure it out.
- 11:48Of course, that that expedition is followed up by Herminando de
- 11:52Soto's exposition in 1539. They land near Tampa Bay.
- 11:57Now we're no longer really exploring.
- 11:59Now we're we're here for golden conquest.
- 12:03We're going to fight the Native Americans.
- 12:06And eventually Soto dies along the Mississippi River, leaves
- 12:10destruction, disease and chaos in his way.
- 12:13But by this point, France and Spain now are fighting over
- 12:15Florida. Long story short, Spain is going
- 12:20to win this war against France because, well, it's France.
- 12:24So Florida will become a Spanish colony.
- 12:29Did they travel to the Atlantic with their white flag and ready?
- 12:34You know, probably at the end of all this, though, you end up
- 12:40with a situation where Spain has Florida, but it's kind of a
- 12:45liability. It's not easy to get to.
- 12:49It's poorly defended by the time you get into the to the American
- 12:54colonial period and the early American Republican period,
- 12:59Spain #1 they're a third rate power by this point.
- 13:03But number two, Americans just don't respect Spain at all.
- 13:09And we keep incurring into into to the Florida territory.
- 13:15Runaway slaves are going down there because it's not America
- 13:17so that they can get in there and and be free.
- 13:20Andrew Jackson, when he's the general, he just ignores the
- 13:25border and invades Florida. That's chasing after the Native
- 13:28Americans and those kinds of things.
- 13:30And this all leads to Spain sitting down with the Adams
- 13:34administration and deciding to sign a treaty with the United
- 13:40States of America, with John Quincy Adams, by the way, not
- 13:42the original John Adams, to cede Florida in exchange for the get
- 13:49this bill. the United States gets Florida in exchange for
- 13:53giving up our claims for Texas. So we don't want Texas anymore.
- 13:59We're going to get Florida. Of course, we're going to know
- 14:03how that turns out in the end, which is we're going to pretty
- 14:07much get both anyway. But for the moment, we've got
- 14:11Florida. Yay.
- 14:14What do we do with it? Well, we make it a territory
- 14:17like always, but in order to become a state, certain things
- 14:23have to be met and be. So beginning in 1838, Florida
- 14:27calls its first constitutional convention and begins to prepare
- 14:31to become a state. Dave So we're thinking about
- 14:37statehood. I'm guessing it's not going to
- 14:39be the easiest thing we've ever. Done.
- 14:40It never is. And see today we kind of take
- 14:42this for granted, but there are conditions for statehood.
- 14:46Now it's been what, since 1960? We haven't added a new state.
- 14:53So you got a significant portion of American population now that
- 14:56has never been through this process.
- 14:59We've never seen it happen. I'd like to see it happen just
- 15:02for that. But we have the same problem now
- 15:06that we had back in 1845 with Florida becoming a state.
- 15:09There's got to be a balance. You can't just add one state at
- 15:12a time. So we take Puerto Rico and
- 15:16create the the Free State of Northern California, whatever
- 15:19they're going to call that. Right.
- 15:20Well, even that wouldn't necessarily work.
- 15:22You've you've got to have a counterbalance.
- 15:25Republicans in Congress are never going to go along with
- 15:27that if they think that the new states are going to be entirely
- 15:30Democrat controlled. See.
- 15:32Well then, create a new state out of Eastern Washington.
- 15:34That ought to work. The mythical state of Jefferson
- 15:37might work, but. There you go.
- 15:40By 1838, Florida's leaders knew that they needed to to pursue
- 15:44statehood, but they had some challenges.
- 15:45Number one, they didn't meet the population threshold.
- 15:49You had to have 60,000 people in your territory in order to even
- 15:53apply for statehood. So how do you get people to move
- 15:56to this swamp infested, war infested, alligator infested
- 16:03future, you know, tourist trap. But for right now, it ain't
- 16:06that. How do you get people to move
- 16:08there? Give them land.
- 16:10Give them land is one way to do it.
- 16:12The other thing is to import slaves, but they start doing
- 16:17that now. They they set down their
- 16:19constitution. Your your original Florida
- 16:21Constitution, strong governor, bicarameral legislation.
- 16:27You got a house and the Senate. Everybody that was white over
- 16:30the age of 21 was given the right to vote.
- 16:32Of course, if you're a slave, not white, then you don't get
- 16:37that. But, but that was kind of
- 16:39unusual in that era. White, if you were white and
- 16:42over 21, you got to vote. You didn't even have to pass a,
- 16:46a poll test or a reading test or anything like that.
- 16:50They did put slavery in the state constitution, which was
- 16:53not unusual. But one of the things that they
- 16:56did do in Florida, very Jacksonian, they had a large
- 17:01distrust of financial institutions and they really put
- 17:05a lot of limits on banks and corporations operating out of
- 17:09Florida really limited that to to keep control of that so that
- 17:14these big businesses and banks couldn't come in and just sort
- 17:18of take over things. Now, Florida adopted this
- 17:22Constitution, but the problem was as a slave state, they
- 17:26weren't going to be admitted until there was a Free State to
- 17:30counterbalance that in the same way that we look at it today
- 17:34with, you know, just control of, of Congress or control of of
- 17:38whatever. In that era, you had to have a
- 17:43Free State admitted at the same time you admitted a slave state
- 17:46to maintain balance. So which state was admitted on
- 17:51the free side on March 30, 1845? On the free side, Anybody know?
- 17:55We didn't talk about them today. Iowa.
- 17:59So Iowa and Florida share the same date, March 3rd, 1845.
- 18:04They become States and are admitted into the United States.
- 18:08John Tyler signs the declaration of those just just the day
- 18:11before he leaves office. And William D Mosley becomes
- 18:15your first governor. How much stuff is named after
- 18:20him down there? I don't know Mosley.
- 18:24I don't know anything about him but.
- 18:25I don't have a clue. He.
- 18:26Becomes your first governor, and Florida is now the 27th state to
- 18:31join the union. Of course, that's not going to
- 18:34last very long, but at the same time, at least they're in.
- 18:41And we'll have more bringing Florida up to the modern era
- 18:44with Dave Does History. We also take your calls on our
- 18:47next segment, 3217681240. And if you want to follow us on
- 18:51Instagram, it's at WMNB Radio. Dave Does History when we
- 18:56continue. Call Bill now, 321-768-1240.
- 19:02Richmond Transmission and Auto Service brings you the hour
- 19:06tonight at 9:00. WMMB brings you the President's
- 19:09address to a joint session of Congress happens at 9:00 PM
- 19:12right here on 92.7 FM WMMB. Dave Bowman with us, as always
- 19:18with Dave does history in this final hour of our Tuesday
- 19:21morning. So, Dave, we're we're becoming a
- 19:25state and. Yeah, we're going to have your
- 19:29change. We're going to Fast forward
- 19:30through most of this because I really want to get to Bill on
- 19:33this celebration of all things Florida.
- 19:35I have a list of fun Florida facts.
- 19:38So in 1861, of course, Florida secedes, joins the Confederacy.
- 19:45Your role in the Civil War is primarily cattle and salt.
- 19:50Florida is really you'd think Texas would be, but because of
- 19:53the trans Mississippi issues, most of the most of the food,
- 19:58most of the beef and salt provided to the Confederacy
- 20:01comes from Florida. And of course not to not to rub
- 20:06it in or anything, but you lose the war and Florida becomes part
- 20:11of the Union again. From that point on, Florida
- 20:14begins to boom, its economy shifts, and you end up today
- 20:18with the Florida that you know and love with.
- 20:23You know, Disney World, theme parks, beaches, snowbirds, and
- 20:28of course WMMB, which is probably the best part of
- 20:33Florida. But there are some fun facts for
- 20:36Florida. You ready?
- 20:38It's not that all that others. You left out space.
- 20:40Come on. Space is there too, but space is
- 20:43kind of moving to Texas, isn't it?
- 20:45No, it's coming here. All right, I'll.
- 20:50Believe you if you say so. OK, Florida is home to the long
- 20:55the oldest continuously habited inhabited settlement, the
- 20:59European settlement in the United States, Saint Augustine
- 21:02founded in 1565. You probably knew that it was
- 21:05originally Spanish, then it was British, and then it was Spanish
- 21:07again before we finally took it away from it.
- 21:10It wasn't always known Bill as the Sunshine State.
- 21:14You know what the original moniker was?
- 21:17You can probably guess. No.
- 21:19The Alligator State, which frankly is much cooler.
- 21:25It was the 3rd state to secede from the Union in 1861, but it
- 21:29was only barely and peripherally involved in the Civil War.
- 21:32Like I said, it provided cattle and production, cattle and salt
- 21:36production. There was a battle in Florida,
- 21:38but that was, you know, pretty minor for somebody like me who
- 21:43grew up in the Mountain West Florida.
- 21:45And this is my biggest complaint with Florida, is it's worse than
- 21:48Iowa. It's just flat.
- 21:52Do you know what the highest point in Florida is now again
- 21:57I'm. Probably.
- 21:58Probably a waste management dump facility.
- 22:02Now, I'm from Colorado, where you know, we got 714 thousand
- 22:05foot peaks. The the highest hill in Florida
- 22:08is 345 feet above sea sea level. By the way, that's not even as
- 22:13tall as Disney's Expedition Everestride, so may not be a
- 22:19waste management center, but it is that Florida has the only
- 22:23living coral reef barrier Barrier Reef, in the entire
- 22:26continental United States. It's the longest, third longest
- 22:30after the Australian Great Barrier Reef and the
- 22:32Mesoamerican Reef. More than 1000 people move to
- 22:36Florida every day, which would be reason #1 not to move there
- 22:40as far as I'm concerned. But that's a lot of people.
- 22:43Bill 400,000 people a year. Yeah.
- 22:48Of course, it's home to 1.25 million alligators, which is one
- 22:52alligator for every 17 people. And it's the Florida Everglades
- 22:57is the only place on Earth, the only place in the entire planet
- 23:02where crocodiles and alligators coexist.
- 23:07And if that's not the most Florida thing chaos wise,
- 23:09nothing else is. Florida's the the only southern
- 23:15state that has two time zones, both eastern and central the
- 23:19Panhandle. In Sarasota, it is technically
- 23:22illegal to sing while wearing a bathing suit.
- 23:28I think we should go check for violations of the law, Dave.
- 23:31I don't think anybody's going to be.
- 23:33Sailing. I don't think anybody's going to
- 23:34give you anything but for it, but technically it's illegal in
- 23:401982. Frustrated with the Border
- 23:42Patrol roadblocks? Key West declared its
- 23:45independence, became the Conch Republic for about a minute,
- 23:51then immediately surrendered to the United States and demanded
- 23:55foreign aid. You want to know where your
- 24:01USAID money went? There you go.
- 24:04Of course, you have no state income tax, but neither do we.
- 24:08We make up for that up here by having a 10% sales tax and about
- 24:13a gazillion percent property tax.
- 24:15I don't know what you guys do down there, but.
- 24:17We're we're pretty tough on property tax and the sales tax
- 24:19is climbing up there depending on where you are.
- 24:22In the early 1900s, lawmakers debated moving the capital from
- 24:26Tallahassee to Orlando. Should have done it.
- 24:30So why didn't they? There's a reason why?
- 24:32Do you know what the reason is? Disney bought the no.
- 24:35I don't know why. Because Tallahassee was already
- 24:38built and Orlando wasn't. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 24:41And lawmakers weren't going to do that.
- 24:43Of course, your home, the the NASA, you produce more oranges
- 24:46than any other US state. 90% of US orange juice comes from
- 24:50Florida. California actually grows more
- 24:53eating oranges. But you guys win the the juice
- 24:56war. We'll take that.
- 24:59The first ATM designed for rollerbladers was installed in
- 25:02Florida, because why not? Yeah, OK.
- 25:07You have the most South Beach you.
- 25:08Got to have it. Florida has the most golf
- 25:10courses of any state in the United States.
- 25:12Over 1200 of them. You're basically one giant
- 25:16putting green. And of course, Gatorade was
- 25:18invented from Florida in 1965. I knew that but didn't really
- 25:25care. Florida Man is a real thing.
- 25:26Thanks to open public record laws, bizarre crime stories from
- 25:29Florida occur almost daily. Florida Man fights off alligator
- 25:33with frying pan Florida man arrested for trying to steal a
- 25:37car in police station parking lot.
- 25:39And so on. Florida's home to Weeki Wachee
- 25:43Wachee Wachee City with a live mermaid show.
- 25:48Have you gone to see this show? I have not.
- 25:51All right. Although we used to have a sales
- 25:53assistant here and she was in her off time, a mermaid at one
- 25:59such facility. So yeah, it was.
- 26:02When I get down there we're going to have to go to Weeki
- 26:04Wachee Springs and see this OK, that'll you can legally own a
- 26:08pet alligator in Florida. That's insane.
- 26:12But if you get. Better have the permit you have,
- 26:14better the permit you. Got to have a special permit but
- 26:16you can own one. How do you get the alligator to
- 26:20sit still? Stay your rub.
- 26:24It's it's belly, Yeah. And just for good, no measure,
- 26:29there is an annual mullet toss competition at the Flora Bama
- 26:33Beach Bar. You can gather to throw dead
- 26:36fish, which are called mullets, across the state line into
- 26:40Alabama because. Somehow I was guessing it had to
- 26:44do with hillbilly haircuts. Just thinking why do they do
- 26:48this? Because it's called Florida.
- 26:52Yeah, and we'll pick it up with your calls, 321-768-1240 when we
- 26:57continue in 60 seconds with Dave.
- 27:00Does history on Bill Mick live? I've got a big post history on
- 27:03Bill Make live on this Tuesday morning.
- 27:05Let's get to the phones. Dave.
- 27:06Line one, you're up. Tell me what you're thinking
- 27:09here. Mario Cape Canaveral.
- 27:11Yeah, Mario. This is this is a great
- 27:13discussion in terms of about the slavery in Florida.
- 27:16You know, I, I started thinking about that and I had run across
- 27:19information that actually New England was the center of slave
- 27:22trade. I don't late 1700s, early 1800s,
- 27:25and Rhode Island was the center of slave trade of all the
- 27:29states. And actually slavery was not
- 27:33abolished in New Jersey until 1865 after the Civil War.
- 27:39And I'd like you to talk about that one of these days.
- 27:43Thanks, Mario. Appreciate the suggestion.
- 27:45Dave usually throws those in the trash, but nonetheless, we'll
- 27:48see where it goes. We could spend days talking
- 27:51about Rhode Island. Rhode Island is one of the most
- 27:54interesting. I think it's one of the most
- 27:56interesting states in existence. Yes, Rhode Island is the center
- 28:00of the slave trade. Despite its Quakerish background
- 28:05and despite its religious foundings, the truth is that
- 28:09nowhere in the United States is slavery actually abolished,
- 28:13abolished until after the 13th Amendment in 1865.
- 28:16There are some states that do away with it, but as as as far
- 28:20as the entire country is concerned, it's not officially
- 28:23ended until 1965 with the 13th Amendment.
- 28:28Was there anything particularly desirous about bringing Florida
- 28:34in and and making it that that next thing?
- 28:37Well, I think that there was a lot of, there's a lot of arable
- 28:41land or was I don't know if there still is or not in
- 28:44Florida. Obviously it worked well for
- 28:46cattle and it wasn't as far away as, you know, places like Texas
- 28:52and Oklahoma, which didn't really even exist at that point.
- 28:56So ranching, of course, becomes a huge thing.
- 29:01There are times when you almost get the impression, Bill with a
- 29:05very sarcastic reading of history, you almost get the
- 29:07impression that, well, the only reason we really want it is
- 29:10because Spain has it. And, you know, we we went
- 29:14through an era of a. Defensive acquisition than
- 29:17anything else. Well, it's very hard to defend
- 29:20Florida. It's flat.
- 29:21It's. I'm at defending the rest of the
- 29:23country, yeah. Yeah, it strategically I'm not
- 29:27sure what the what the ultimate value of it was, although it
- 29:30turns out that the the Space Coast works out pretty good, so.
- 29:34Yeah, Yeah, it does. And and we're thrilled here.
- 29:36Line one. You're up next on Bill Make
- 29:38LIVE. Good morning.
- 29:40Good morning, Bill. This is Deep South, Bob.
- 29:45Yeah, Bob, go ahead. Yes, yeah, Florida was very
- 29:50involved in the war between states or what I call the war or
- 29:55Northern Aggression. Tallahassee was the was the only
- 30:00state capital. It wasn't captured by the by the
- 30:05Union troops and it was stopped at the Battle of the Lusty and
- 30:09Battle of Natural Bridge and the battle out West.
- 30:15Mariana, they call it the Cradle to Grave Battalion because all
- 30:19the men was all fighting the other skirmishes.
- 30:23So yeah, Florida was involved in the War of Northern Aggression
- 30:28big time. Appreciate your input, Bob.
- 30:31It could be they didn't want Tallahassee, who knows?
- 30:34And we talked about the battle of Alusty a few, I think it was
- 30:37last year. You know, big time is is
- 30:42subjective, I guess. I mean, this is not Virginia,
- 30:47nor is it even Arkansas, but at the same time, it is a huge area
- 30:53for blockading with the Union Navy blockading a lot of the
- 30:57ports and stuff like that through there.
- 30:58So everywhere, everywhere's involved.
- 31:01It's just a question of, you know, degrees and that sort of
- 31:04thing. Sure.
- 31:06Sure enough. What are you looking at for next
- 31:08week, Dave? Oh, I'm looking at all kinds of
- 31:10stuff. We got some some interesting
- 31:12World War 2 stuff. We have some interesting World
- 31:13War One stuff. I just haven't really decided
- 31:16yet. OK, well.
- 31:18You know, you know how I work, man.
- 31:20We talked about that for two hours.
- 31:22Yeah, yeah, that's true. And there's just a vast array of
- 31:27things to dig into. That's the cool.
- 31:28Part. And there's no guarantee that
- 31:30even if I send Bill an outline that I'm going to follow it.
- 31:33Yeah, we picked that up and what the frock quite frequently.
- 31:35Here's the outline for the show. Here's what we're going to do.
- 31:38On the other hand, let's talk about this for 30 minutes.
- 31:41And what there's nothing wrong with that.
- 31:43That again, the freedom we talked about earlier with
- 31:46podcasting versus whatever else you might be doing.
- 31:49So thank you to Richmond Transmission and Auto Service.
- 31:53They made the hour possible. Top of the page, make well, top
