- 0:00Time now for back to the basics and healthcare with Balanced Life Kiropractic and we
- 0:03have doctor Harley join and that's how you doing, doctor Harley. Hey,
- 0:06good morning, John, I'm doing fantastic. It was a great weekend to
- 0:09just get outside and refresh. We took an extra day off, so it's
- 0:13good to just get ready to get back into it and get ready for summer.
- 0:16And yeah, it kind of feels like summer's here because the Memorial Day
- 0:19weekend is like the unofficial start to summer, and we had kind of a
- 0:22hot and muggy weekend. As we get into summer, there's a thing called
- 0:27heat stroke and heat exhaustion, and we're going to talk a little bit about
- 0:30that today. Yeah, it just made me think of with how hot it
- 0:32was on Saturday, that some people might not be thinking about, you know,
- 0:35what they should be doing when they're outside to you know, make sure
- 0:38that they're staying safe because you know, we're thinking of winter time. You
- 0:43know, we don't really think about the water that we're taking in. So
- 0:45it's when we get to summer it's like, okay, we actually need to
- 0:48start paying attention to that. So to start with, you should be drinking
- 0:51about half your body weight and ounces if at least a minimum of sixty four
- 0:55fluid ounces, and some people that's a lot, but that's like the minimum.
- 1:00But then when you're outside in the summer, sweating, working, like
- 1:03you need to be drinking like way more than that. You know, there's
- 1:06not really a good reference, but like you should just be drinking like way
- 1:08more water when you're outside, because if you're not, that's when we start
- 1:12reaching into the dehydration. Or we know you're outside in the sun, heat
- 1:17exhaustion can start setting in and then it could lead to heat stroke. So
- 1:22when you think you've had enough water, have a little more. Yea,
- 1:23when you're thirsty, you're not drinking enough water. That's what I would say.
- 1:26If you're waiting until you're thirsty or dehydrated, you're already behind. So
- 1:32now do things with water in them count? So if I drink something that
- 1:34has like a lot of water in it, does that count towards water or
- 1:38not? Really? Tea, coffee, pop, alcohol, all those things
- 1:42do not count. So beer has a lot of water, but that doesn't
- 1:45count, not count, And coffee and tea are actually more dehydrating because of
- 1:48the caffeine in them, and alcohol is not good for you either when you
- 1:52need H two O water actually rehydrating and replenishing your tissues. You know,
- 1:57things that have like electrolyte packets and then those are going to be good for
- 2:00you. But you shouldn't just be drinking those straight like. You should be
- 2:04drinking those if you're doing some sort of activity. They're not just Hey,
- 2:07I want, you know, some fancy water or so, how about flavored
- 2:12water? Does that count towards water? Depends what's in it? Okay,
- 2:15So so some of the flavored waters that make it taste good, that's not
- 2:19necessarily if it's just like sugar, you know, that's not I mean,
- 2:22yeah, the sugar is going to help just you know, punish carbs and
- 2:24stuff if you're sweating a lot. But you should be drinking you know,
- 2:28normal water or water with like electrolyte type stuff in it, because when you're
- 2:31sweating, you're losing you know, sodium, potassium, all those electrolytes.
- 2:36That's the purpose of those types of drinks is to replenish that into your body.
- 2:38Because if you're drinking too much water and you're not putting in those electrolytes.
- 2:42You could actually become too hydrated and that can cause problems as well.
- 2:46Very nice, so get plenty of water and plenty of rest as well.
