- 0:01Speaker 1: Some of the content of Patriots Unfiltered may not be
- 0:03Speaker 1: suitable for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised. The world's
- 0:09Speaker 1: origional pockets welcome to Patriot's Unfiltered. We're also just taking
- 0:19Speaker 1: Meek Mill at his word, like Miek Mill everything about
- 0:24Speaker 1: and I'm talking about my colleagues right now, Rand with
- 0:27Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson wants to play for the Patriots. According to
- 0:31Speaker 1: a rapper, could be Meek Mill heard it from somebody,
- 0:33Speaker 1: who heard it from somebody who heard it from somebody,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and it's just passing it a week. Mill is all
- 0:38Speaker 1: of a sudden, Adam Schefter. Brandon writes in UM about frets,
- 0:41Speaker 1: and please go ahead and mark where Fred said, I'll
- 0:43Speaker 1: never forget the game I forget. I'll never forget that game.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I don't know what I forget. It might be. I
- 0:49Speaker 1: don't know if it was a preseason game or something,
- 0:51Speaker 1: or a first or second game of the typical Fred,
- 0:55Speaker 1: you have a lot of you like that that really
- 0:57Speaker 1: got you. He's like giggling over there. She's just thinking
- 1:00Speaker 1: of little Jack could make Lamar Jackson being Mill has
- 1:06Speaker 1: been very overrated as an artist. I'm sorry, I do
- 1:09Speaker 1: not listen to Evan's point of view unrap. So okay,
- 1:13Speaker 1: this is Patriot's Unfiltered, fueled by Duncan. All right, welcome
- 1:19Speaker 1: to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Thursday here at Jilett's Stadium,
- 1:23Speaker 1: and that means you can see us. Hey, how you doing,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and you can see Deuce. I should probably not be
- 1:28Speaker 1: texting then, Huh, I forgot I'm doing this. I spy Deuce,
- 1:31Speaker 1: I spy Evan, I spy Paul myself, Matt in the booth. No, uh, Tamarrow.
- 1:36Speaker 1: She's still recovering from the owners meeting. Duce. No, I
- 1:39Speaker 1: think she's she isn't text I was kidding, Yeah, now
- 1:43Speaker 1: she she was fine out there. She didn't get in
- 1:44Speaker 1: any trouble man. No all Alex, yeah did. I did
- 1:49Speaker 1: a little more research on on the rap game. She's
- 1:52Speaker 1: so disgusted after the rap views from last show. She's
- 1:57Speaker 1: never gonna come here, I know, not even for video.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Usually that that gets her down here, right, you know
- 2:01Speaker 1: a chance to get oh is that right? The FaceTime
- 2:03Speaker 1: is big fully fully admitted it. She tweeted out a
- 2:07Speaker 1: list after the show yesterday. Her favorite rappers is like
- 2:09Speaker 1: she'steen artists long. It's like this is like my favorite
- 2:13Speaker 1: draft crushes. It's like I could be here all day, right,
- 2:15Speaker 1: you know. And it was funny because on the show
- 2:19Speaker 1: she had mentioned that Kendrick was like by firing away
- 2:22Speaker 1: her favorite and the list didn't include Kendrick again, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: then she had to oh man, she really got into it.
- 2:28Speaker 1: She had to follow up by saying that I thought
- 2:30Speaker 1: that was that went without saying obviously, ken Rick, I'm
- 2:33Speaker 1: glad I wasn't here for it. I have nothing to
- 2:34Speaker 1: add to that conversation. I had very little to add
- 2:36Speaker 1: other than just my you know, my newte number the
- 2:39Speaker 1: seventies well Georgia sugar Hill game. Well, aside from rap.
- 2:44Speaker 1: When it comes to football, fans are still a buzz
- 2:47Speaker 1: about the comments made at the owner's meeting on Monday
- 2:52Speaker 1: Robert Craft and Bill Belichick. Since then, Bill Belichick is
- 2:57Speaker 1: was a a pro day And I guess Jim McBride
- 3:00Speaker 1: was there. Is that how this transpired? LSU and was there?
- 3:05Speaker 1: Oh wow? And he told Jim, we don't really make
- 3:09Speaker 1: fun of other media here on this show. Paul Eyeball
- 3:13Speaker 1: emoj you know. He I don't know if it was
- 3:16Speaker 1: a clarification, but kind of made it clear to Jim
- 3:19Speaker 1: McBride that, no, the Patriots are not resting on their laurels.
- 3:21Speaker 1: It's not how we've ever done things here and that's
- 3:24Speaker 1: not how we're doing things. Um, but didn't really explain
- 3:27Speaker 1: the comments. So it's still out there and it was
- 3:31Speaker 1: still not uh, the brand of Bill Belichick, the Patriot
- 3:37Speaker 1: Way brand. You know, when things are not things aren't
- 3:41Speaker 1: you know? Right right now? You know? And you know,
- 3:44Speaker 1: and I um also include the owners comments. That's I'm
- 3:50Speaker 1: not sure that any of those things were in the
- 3:51Speaker 1: best interest of the team this year. Um, but they
- 3:56Speaker 1: are what they are. And you know, at some point,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I think the owner and the coach needs to just
- 4:01Speaker 1: sit down pretty soon and just say all right. And
- 4:04Speaker 1: you thought you would have thought it would have happened already,
- 4:06Speaker 1: after how last season went and the changes that needed
- 4:08Speaker 1: to happen and all of this. Let's get on the
- 4:10Speaker 1: same page here. We got football games to win. Uh,
- 4:14Speaker 1: you know, are we going after Lamar? And I I
- 4:17Speaker 1: think you know, Uh, but Dard put one of Paul's guys,
- 4:21Speaker 1: he came out, I don't know what his sources, but
- 4:24Speaker 1: it you know, he reported as fact that the Patriots
- 4:28Speaker 1: aren't going to be pursuing Lamar Jackson, as did Jeff Howe. Yeah. Multiple,
- 4:34Speaker 1: And that's all I asked for on Tuesday, was like,
- 4:36Speaker 1: can we can we fact check Meek Mill a little
- 4:39Speaker 1: bit before we just run with this as this this
- 4:41Speaker 1: you know, huge story. I think people want to believe it.
- 4:45Speaker 1: I'm included in that. Of course I'm included in that.
- 4:48Speaker 1: But uh, according to now, you know Jeff how you say,
- 4:51Speaker 1: as well, did he just cited what a Patriot source?
- 4:55Speaker 1: League source? What source? Did he site? Just? I saw
- 4:59Speaker 1: a tweet it has said per source? Okay, so was it?
- 5:04Speaker 1: I didn't. I didn't click on the article. You know,
- 5:06Speaker 1: this isn't my generation problem. So two people are saying it.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I would have to imagine that if the Patriots were
- 5:13Speaker 1: pursuing Lamar Jackson somehow, it would have gotten out there already.
- 5:17Speaker 1: You know. Well, coming back from the Owner's meetings where
- 5:20Speaker 1: I was in Arizona for the last couple of days,
- 5:22Speaker 1: I just thought we all thought it was funny that
- 5:24Speaker 1: it seemed totally planned by Lamar Jackson to reveal the
- 5:28Speaker 1: trade request like six minutes before we were supposed to
- 5:31Speaker 1: sit down with Jim Harbot. You know, so I and
- 5:35Speaker 1: don't I know there's a lot to unpack. I just
- 5:36Speaker 1: can't get over the fact that that, because of how
- 5:39Speaker 1: these things have unfolded, that there's going to be a
- 5:41Speaker 1: segment of Patriot's Nation that even if Lamar Jackson signs
- 5:44Speaker 1: back with Baltimore, they're going to hold it against Bill
- 5:47Speaker 1: Belichick that the Patriots did not sign him. And I
- 5:50Speaker 1: think that's what's kind of been set up. And I
- 5:51Speaker 1: think a lot of the tension of this season just
- 5:54Speaker 1: feels to be rising. And you know, the I mean
- 5:57Speaker 1: just all of the comments of what needs to happen
- 6:00Speaker 1: making the playoffs didn't feel like an ultimatum necessarily, but
- 6:02Speaker 1: it kind of maybe did a little bit. Yeah, And
- 6:04Speaker 1: I think, you know, it kind of is like a subtext,
- 6:08Speaker 1: but I think that this is not doing Mac Jones
- 6:11Speaker 1: any favors this whole thing, and like I got some
- 6:15Speaker 1: comments on that just because look, I do think, first
- 6:19Speaker 1: off the top, I think it's weird that, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 1: you just can't really seem to get out of Bill
- 6:23Speaker 1: that Mac is the starter anymore. And he had some
- 6:25Speaker 1: positive statements last year after the offseason, you know, which
- 6:28Speaker 1: is fine. I don't think he necessarily came out and
- 6:30Speaker 1: said oh, Mac is our guy and he's you know,
- 6:32Speaker 1: but just that he had improved. So on one hand,
- 6:36Speaker 1: I understand that Bill wants to have Mac compete and
- 6:40Speaker 1: to come in and not feel like he can you
- 6:42Speaker 1: know that he's still on the hot seat. I get
- 6:44Speaker 1: that kind of part of it, but it is weird
- 6:47Speaker 1: that he won't really put his support but behind him
- 6:49Speaker 1: through it. It It said. With Robert's comments, though, I just
- 6:52Speaker 1: felt like he was saying, I like this kid. I
- 6:54Speaker 1: don't think he was saying I think this kid is
- 6:56Speaker 1: you know the answer the start. I just think he
- 6:58Speaker 1: was saying, I really like Mac Jones, and I think
- 7:00Speaker 1: we need to do more around him. I agree. Oh,
- 7:02Speaker 1: he definitely said that, like he has a lot of
- 7:04Speaker 1: faith in Mac Jones and you know, excited, you know,
- 7:07Speaker 1: thinks he's a good player and all that stuff. He
- 7:09Speaker 1: said that, But he also said that meek Mill, you know,
- 7:14Speaker 1: and that's Bill's decision, and like, you don't even say
- 7:17Speaker 1: that if you believe in your quarterback, you don't bring
- 7:19Speaker 1: that out there because why why are you talking about
- 7:22Speaker 1: somebody else you know? And what about me? You know,
- 7:26Speaker 1: And so like you don't do that as a coach
- 7:28Speaker 1: or an owner. Or another teammate or anyone. I would
- 7:32Speaker 1: just tie it real quick. The next day, I listened
- 7:33Speaker 1: to Dan Campbell talk and the way he talked about
- 7:36Speaker 1: Jared Goff was like, thank god, we've got a guy
- 7:38Speaker 1: like I mean, it was like, you know, and I think,
- 7:41Speaker 1: you know, Jared Goff is what he is. We saw
- 7:43Speaker 1: a pretty rough performance from him last year and in
- 7:45Speaker 1: the super Bowl, but you know, it just it was
- 7:46Speaker 1: a little bit of contrast to me of I mean,
- 7:48Speaker 1: does anybody think he's the next put more faith in
- 7:51Speaker 1: brock Purdy recently than anyone here has in Mac You know,
- 7:56Speaker 1: I don't think that's right, Like we have to give
- 7:58Speaker 1: him a passing year. You too, Well, that's even if
- 8:01Speaker 1: you're faking, that's you know, the unwritten rule in NFL
- 8:06Speaker 1: and really all sports is even if you're faking it,
- 8:08Speaker 1: you always pump up your own guy, you know. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 8:13Speaker 1: I mean it's I think it's hard coming off the
- 8:15Speaker 1: season that we had, and I mean there's a lot
- 8:17Speaker 1: of finger pointing, you know, amongst everyone fans, coach and
- 8:20Speaker 1: all that, but it is it is just a little weird,
- 8:23Speaker 1: and I don't know, I think this is Max an
- 8:25Speaker 1: interesting kid. He's always kind of played for hard ass
- 8:28Speaker 1: coaches going back to high school. The legendary coach down
- 8:31Speaker 1: there at bowls uh, Nick Saban, of course. So I mean,
- 8:34Speaker 1: on one hand, I feel like Max should kind of
- 8:36Speaker 1: be used to this, like no one's ever gonna give
- 8:37Speaker 1: you any credit and you gotta have to earn everything
- 8:39Speaker 1: of it. But at the same time, I just wonder
- 8:42Speaker 1: if it might be worth a little bit to, you know,
- 8:44Speaker 1: just give him a little bit of reassurance through through
- 8:46Speaker 1: the press, because so far, I mean, and even Devin, Like,
- 8:48Speaker 1: you know, Devin's point at his retirements that ceremonies, pointing
- 8:52Speaker 1: out Mac being there and kind of praising him, and
- 8:54Speaker 1: then three days later he's like, you got to make
- 8:55Speaker 1: that call Lamar Jackson. I'm like, well, what is it
- 8:57Speaker 1: the Devin, Do you believe in Mac or do you
- 9:00Speaker 1: think like you just have to go all in for
- 9:02Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson no matter what. So I think there's just
- 9:04Speaker 1: so many rotating points of view right now. It's it's
- 9:07Speaker 1: hard to really pin down what's going to happen over
- 9:10Speaker 1: the next few months. I know it's we've never gone
- 9:13Speaker 1: through well, in the last twenty three years or so,
- 9:16Speaker 1: we've never we haven't gone through this with you know,
- 9:21Speaker 1: you know the fact that you really don't have the guy,
- 9:25Speaker 1: you know, like Cam Newton got here, and you know,
- 9:29Speaker 1: we said it in this show, there's no competition. Cam
- 9:31Speaker 1: Newton is a starting quarterback and he was, you know,
- 9:35Speaker 1: and it wasn't until we drafted Mac that now all
- 9:37Speaker 1: of a sudden we gotta wonder, like what's going on here?
- 9:41Speaker 1: But up until that point, we knew who our quarterback
- 9:44Speaker 1: was for the last two decades. And even then, to
- 9:46Speaker 1: you a point, Fred, when they drafted Mac Jones, you
- 9:49Speaker 1: knew Mac Jones was the guy, right, You just didn't
- 9:51Speaker 1: know when he was going to take over for Cam Newton.
- 9:53Speaker 1: But you knew. You don't draft a guy with the
- 9:55Speaker 1: fifteenth overall pick with the idea he's never going to
- 9:57Speaker 1: be the starting quarterback, right. He was going to be
- 10:00Speaker 1: the starting quarterback. It was a matter of win. And
- 10:01Speaker 1: then all of a sudden Patriots released Cam Newton. Oh
- 10:04Speaker 1: this is so this is new to you know us,
- 10:07Speaker 1: The only one ever got right? Yeah, I think my
- 10:12Speaker 1: I think I speak for a lot of people when
- 10:14Speaker 1: I say my frustration level with the team, and you
- 10:17Speaker 1: just said it, Fred, I will admit that my age
- 10:20Speaker 1: is playing against me here because I've never really had
- 10:22Speaker 1: a time to be frustrated with the team. My frustration
- 10:25Speaker 1: with the team right now is at an all time high.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I have never been more frustrated speaking as a fan
- 10:31Speaker 1: right now about the messaging from the team, the direction
- 10:36Speaker 1: of the team, the overall philosophy of the roster with
- 10:42Speaker 1: the team, all of it in general. And I look
- 10:45Speaker 1: at what's going on with the quarterback position, and if
- 10:50Speaker 1: we were looking at if this was the Jets, and
- 10:52Speaker 1: the Jets were doing this to their their young quarterback,
- 10:55Speaker 1: we would be like they're ruining another one, right, like
- 10:59Speaker 1: this is what we this is what you do. And
- 11:01Speaker 1: I think that there's a method to a madness of
- 11:04Speaker 1: Bill Belichick, that maybe he's trying to motivate Mac Jones.
- 11:08Speaker 1: That's the only thing that I can hang on to
- 11:10Speaker 1: is that he thinks because Mac had to battle his
- 11:13Speaker 1: way onto the field at Alabama and was a three
- 11:16Speaker 1: star recruit and then had some haters quite frankly in
- 11:20Speaker 1: the draft and still does very much, so that maybe
- 11:22Speaker 1: that he's a guy that's motivated by that sort of thing.
- 11:27Speaker 1: But at the same time, I just feel like they
- 11:30Speaker 1: have checked so many boxes of how to ruin this kid,
- 11:34Speaker 1: and I'm actually to the point now where it's if
- 11:38Speaker 1: you don't, if you don't believe in them, they go
- 11:40Speaker 1: get somebody else. If you don't think that he's good enough,
- 11:44Speaker 1: or he's going to be a guy, he's going to
- 11:46Speaker 1: be a franchise level quarterback or whatever the case may be,
- 11:49Speaker 1: then why are we wasting time with him? Then go
- 11:53Speaker 1: draft Will Levis, or go trade for Lamar Jackson, or
- 11:57Speaker 1: do whatever I mean. If they truly feel this way,
- 12:00Speaker 1: and then why why weren't they in the sweepstakes for
- 12:02Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers? Well, and that's part of the frustrations. We
- 12:05Speaker 1: don't know how they feel. We really don't, but everything
- 12:08Speaker 1: that they have said through the media, especially the head coach,
- 12:11Speaker 1: is very very I think he feels the same way
- 12:15Speaker 1: as all of us that if you put Mac in
- 12:18Speaker 1: a cushiony situation with a with the right offensive coordinator
- 12:22Speaker 1: with good playmakers around him, that you can win with
- 12:25Speaker 1: Mac Jones, but you're not going to win because of
- 12:28Speaker 1: Mac Jones. And if they truly feel that way, and
- 12:30Speaker 1: this is the way that they want to build the team,
- 12:33Speaker 1: which is value and being methodical and be u, you know,
- 12:38Speaker 1: careful with what they're spending and who they're spending it on.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Then you can't win with a quarterback that you just
- 12:45Speaker 1: win with. You can't. You can't pull a quarterback to
- 12:48Speaker 1: a super Bowl or being contending status unless you're going
- 12:52Speaker 1: to go out and spend like crazy and make trades
- 12:56Speaker 1: and make acquisitions like crazy, you know, like the forty
- 12:58Speaker 1: nine ers have, or or like the Eagles or the
- 13:01Speaker 1: Dolphins or these other teams that I think we're totally
- 13:04Speaker 1: sold after two years on their quarterbacks or you know,
- 13:06Speaker 1: forty nine unique situation, but this type of team building
- 13:11Speaker 1: process with a quarterback that you don't believe in, you're
- 13:14Speaker 1: you're gonna be a and nine every single year. Yeah,
- 13:18Speaker 1: So that's that's kind of like where we are. We're
- 13:21Speaker 1: in the wilderness. We're you know, searching for that right combination.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I had one more funny little interaction at the owner's
- 13:28Speaker 1: meeting with a member of the Tampa Bay media who
- 13:31Speaker 1: I forget, really nice guy. We was just kind of
- 13:33Speaker 1: waiting for Robert to come out and started talking to
- 13:35Speaker 1: him and he was it was kind of like, man,
- 13:38Speaker 1: the circus has left town for us, you know, even
- 13:40Speaker 1: like Todd Bowls's table, nobody really there, and I'm like,
- 13:44Speaker 1: welcome to the club, dude, Like we're back trying to
- 13:46Speaker 1: find a quarterback. It was just funny to see another
- 13:48Speaker 1: team kind of going in that pro post Brady wake
- 13:50Speaker 1: of like, oh man, you know, it's it's it's so
- 13:53Speaker 1: hard now what you know, Yeah, welcome to the party.
- 13:56Speaker 1: It's it's you know, especially for them, they were they
- 13:58Speaker 1: were irrelevant and then very relevant for a very short
- 14:02Speaker 1: period of time, and I'm probably facing irrelevance again. That's
- 14:05Speaker 1: I mean, even as a media guy, like you want
- 14:07Speaker 1: to you want to cover a team that is at
- 14:11Speaker 1: least involved, like you don't want to be covering you know,
- 14:14Speaker 1: it's got some juice for Cleveland Browns and be five
- 14:16Speaker 1: and eleven every year. Yeah, I know. And that's why
- 14:18Speaker 1: I feel, you know, we're used to being Man, I
- 14:21Speaker 1: feel really good about the roster and you know, I'm
- 14:24Speaker 1: excited to get into training camp and to see some
- 14:26Speaker 1: of these players, you know, how it comes together. And
- 14:28Speaker 1: right now I almost feel like I'm I don't want
- 14:30Speaker 1: to say I'm excited for the drama, but I almost
- 14:32Speaker 1: feel like that's my storyline right now. Of like is
- 14:35Speaker 1: mac reilly in a competition, you know, like what's Gerob
- 14:37Speaker 1: Mayo doing? Like what how has the coaching configured this year?
- 14:41Speaker 1: You know, where's Joe Judge? Like those kind of things
- 14:44Speaker 1: are at the top of my mind right now, and
- 14:45Speaker 1: it's it's less about like why would you do Smith
- 14:48Speaker 1: Schuster Like yeah, it'll be you know fine, Like we
- 14:50Speaker 1: didn't really talk about that on Tuesday. The whole possibility,
- 14:54Speaker 1: you know, what how to build put it? You know,
- 14:55Speaker 1: like everybody will have an opportunity, opportunity you know. Do
- 14:59Speaker 1: you really think that there's a there will be a
- 15:02Speaker 1: true competition between Zappi and Mac. No, I don't either.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I don't think it'll be a fair competition. I think
- 15:08Speaker 1: Mac will get Zappy's the majority of like pass like
- 15:13Speaker 1: I've seen enough so you and I agree. Pause. But
- 15:16Speaker 1: but here's the real question. Should there be one? I
- 15:19Speaker 1: don't really think so. I don't think. I think Mac
- 15:22Speaker 1: deserves to be I think Mac deserves that. I might
- 15:27Speaker 1: surprise some people based on the way I talk about Mac,
- 15:30Speaker 1: but I think I think Mac deserves to go into
- 15:34Speaker 1: the season with no asterisks, with no second guesses, and
- 15:38Speaker 1: if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Yeah, Now I
- 15:41Speaker 1: don't think it will. I also don't think that Bailey
- 15:44Speaker 1: Zappy is more than a backup, So maybe that's clouding
- 15:48Speaker 1: my judgment a little bit. Maybe if it was a stronger,
- 15:51Speaker 1: you know, if it was a you know, a Garoppolo
- 15:54Speaker 1: like guy behind him, you know, in twenty fourteen fifty,
- 15:58Speaker 1: you know, coming into the fifty in season, Say, maybe
- 16:01Speaker 1: I would feel different because I saw some stuff from
- 16:03Speaker 1: Garoppolo as a rookie, you know, in the preseason, and
- 16:06Speaker 1: things that I didn't really see from Zappy. Maybe i'd
- 16:09Speaker 1: feel better if if you were Bailey Zappy in his shoes,
- 16:13Speaker 1: do you feel like there's blood in the water a
- 16:15Speaker 1: little bit? Though? Like, do you feel like I might
- 16:16Speaker 1: get a chance If I were Zappy? I would be yeah,
- 16:19Speaker 1: i'd I'm just gonna stay ready. I'm gonna make the
- 16:21Speaker 1: most of my opportunities. But I would believe if I
- 16:24Speaker 1: was Bailey Zappy, that my opportunity is going to happen
- 16:26Speaker 1: at some point, and I just need to be ready
- 16:28Speaker 1: for not to wish injury upon anybody. But this time around,
- 16:31Speaker 1: if Mac gets hurt and Bailey comes in and plays
- 16:33Speaker 1: as well as he did last year, the job ain't
- 16:35Speaker 1: going back. Yeah. I think Bill O'Brien is a little
- 16:39Speaker 1: bit of the wild card. Wow, how good was Mac
- 16:41Speaker 1: playing when he got injured? Not just so so okay,
- 16:44Speaker 1: So then you're right. But if he's really playing well
- 16:47Speaker 1: and he got injured, then he does get it back.
- 16:49Speaker 1: You know, you got it tough, But but you missed
- 16:52Speaker 1: the rest of what he said. And Zappy goes in
- 16:54Speaker 1: and plays really well. Yeah, but you have to have
- 16:58Speaker 1: played better than Mac was playing. Yeah, And I think
- 17:01Speaker 1: that happened last year and back on his job back.
- 17:04Speaker 1: I think Evans point is if it happens again like that,
- 17:06Speaker 1: if like they might not get the job best. Yeah.
- 17:10Speaker 1: But I think that you know, from the opening of
- 17:12Speaker 1: camp as a viewer, there should be no doubt who
- 17:16Speaker 1: the starting quarterback of the Patriots is. Yeah, that's how
- 17:19Speaker 1: I feel. Do you think the head coach feels that way.
- 17:22Speaker 1: I think we'll see. I do I think that he's
- 17:26Speaker 1: I don't like what you're talking about. I don't think
- 17:28Speaker 1: we can waste time with the first two weeks of
- 17:30Speaker 1: camp figuring that out. Well. I mean I would say,
- 17:33Speaker 1: go to spring when you had Cam and met here
- 17:37Speaker 1: and how if he's truly looking to figure it out.
- 17:39Speaker 1: He'll figure it out in the spring. Yeah, I know,
- 17:43Speaker 1: but that's not You're not doing anything to show who's
- 17:46Speaker 1: better than the other. But here's my point. How many
- 17:48Speaker 1: times do we go out there in the spring and
- 17:51Speaker 1: see player X lined up at training one spot? Yeah,
- 17:55Speaker 1: and that guy is the guy all the way through?
- 17:58Speaker 1: Like they make these decisions, like I decided that Ronnie
- 18:02Speaker 1: Perkins wasn't part of the equation in the spring. Yeah,
- 18:04Speaker 1: oh yeah, Like I didn't have to wait for training
- 18:06Speaker 1: camp in the preseason games to see him knock out
- 18:08Speaker 1: reps because he's behind seventeen guys in the spring. So no,
- 18:11Speaker 1: I agree with that. And like so in the spring
- 18:14Speaker 1: we should see Mac Jones getting you know, you know,
- 18:17Speaker 1: it'd be clear. The spring isn't any time to make
- 18:20Speaker 1: any evalue, any competition evaluation. I'm just saying that they'll
- 18:24Speaker 1: have decided and for whatever, you know, whatever how they
- 18:28Speaker 1: do it, whether it's participation in the program, you know,
- 18:32Speaker 1: stuff in the meeting rooms, you know, on whiteboards, film stuff,
- 18:36Speaker 1: whatever they do. They have their depth chart pretty much
- 18:39Speaker 1: established before training and I and they should and it
- 18:43Speaker 1: should be Mac at the top of it. I do.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I agree with you. So some of you know, I
- 18:47Speaker 1: hate to say this phrase, but talking to some people,
- 18:49Speaker 1: those spring practices are way more intense than I ever realized.
- 18:53Speaker 1: And I've learned that over the last few weeks, just generally,
- 18:55Speaker 1: but that it is as intense as training camp is
- 18:58Speaker 1: in terms of putting film up, dunting what went wrong,
- 19:01Speaker 1: grilling guys, all that stuff. So I totally agree with Bill,
- 19:04Speaker 1: with Paul, I just think the wild card right here
- 19:07Speaker 1: for me is Bill O'Brien, because he knows exactly what
- 19:09Speaker 1: he wants, exactly what he's looking for from a quarterback.
- 19:12Speaker 1: How does he feel about these two guys and how
- 19:14Speaker 1: well are they able to execute what he wants now?
- 19:16Speaker 1: The only thing, the only caveat that I would say
- 19:18Speaker 1: against our argument is like a lot of times, availability
- 19:23Speaker 1: has a lot to do with those those spots in
- 19:25Speaker 1: the spring, because you know, guys are coming off surgeries,
- 19:27Speaker 1: they're not quite ready to go last spring right bonds
- 19:30Speaker 1: away to train Nixon. You know, Trey Nixon's getting you know,
- 19:33Speaker 1: a lot of reps, and it's because other guys weren't
- 19:36Speaker 1: necessarily um you know, is actively involved. And I forget that.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I think Myers was Myers. I forget the specifics of
- 19:42Speaker 1: a missed sometime and May. Yeah, I think Gaggalod missed
- 19:47Speaker 1: sometime in the spring too, if I'm not mistaken. But
- 19:49Speaker 1: he also cut some deep balls in the spring, and Parker,
- 19:52Speaker 1: you know, was doing the same kind of stuff. So
- 19:55Speaker 1: I just think that that's the one caveat that I
- 19:57Speaker 1: would say a lot of times that happens on the
- 19:58Speaker 1: offensive line. You know, three offensive linemen are dealing with
- 20:02Speaker 1: offseason surgeries. They're not ready to go, you know, in May,
- 20:06Speaker 1: and oh well, it looks like, uh, you know, Chason
- 20:09Speaker 1: Hines is making a push for a starting job because
- 20:12Speaker 1: he's only got really but like he puts your point
- 20:13Speaker 1: to the Wynn Brown swap, didn't we kind of see
- 20:16Speaker 1: that first first day that we got a chance to watch,
- 20:21Speaker 1: they were at the opposite sides and it never changed.
- 20:24Speaker 1: So sometimes you get I mean, sometimes Bill moves guys
- 20:26Speaker 1: around in an effort to create depth, and sometimes it
- 20:31Speaker 1: means you know exactly what it is he shows you
- 20:34Speaker 1: exactly what is on day one. Yeah, so that's the
- 20:39Speaker 1: status quo right now? Um status is quo. What's our
- 20:44Speaker 1: next our next milestone? So you have the owners meaning
- 20:47Speaker 1: next one is the draft, right, there's really nothing now
- 20:50Speaker 1: between this and the draft, which again like this is it,
- 20:53Speaker 1: like this is what it's about, you know, And I
- 20:55Speaker 1: totally get what people are upset about with, you know,
- 20:57Speaker 1: free agency and you know, and them doing it the
- 20:59Speaker 1: way they do it. But just to continue to hammer
- 21:02Speaker 1: that put them doing the draft the way they do it,
- 21:04Speaker 1: that's and that's and so to Evan's point twenty twenty one, Hey,
- 21:07Speaker 1: maybe we've changed some things around this last year. So
- 21:11Speaker 1: you've had two examples in the last two years of
- 21:13Speaker 1: it going both ways. How's it going to go this year?
- 21:15Speaker 1: I mean, and I think we all er faith Yeah, zero,
- 21:18Speaker 1: I am, like I said at the beginning, I'm at
- 21:21Speaker 1: an all time frustration. So you expect to be apoplectic
- 21:23Speaker 1: on your first PU draft show. Absolutely, I disagree. I
- 21:28Speaker 1: have I'm optimistic about the draft. I think. I think,
- 21:31Speaker 1: I think when you look at their guys, when you
- 21:33Speaker 1: look at the stuff we've put up on Patriots dot com,
- 21:36Speaker 1: you know, behind the scenes with Shryne Ball, we're about
- 21:38Speaker 1: to drop behind the scenes from a combine um that
- 21:42Speaker 1: whole thing. There's a lot of young guys in the room,
- 21:45Speaker 1: in the personnel room. But did any of them have
- 21:47Speaker 1: a say, I just maybe not, but I'm hopeful that,
- 21:52Speaker 1: led by Matt Grow, a lot of these young guys
- 21:55Speaker 1: do have a say and that will affect how they draft.
- 22:00Speaker 1: You know, there's a lot of young guys. I mean,
- 22:03Speaker 1: I would wonder, you know, who was, Like how did
- 22:06Speaker 1: it all? I mean, I think we all have our
- 22:07Speaker 1: opinions on how the cold strange of it all went down,
- 22:09Speaker 1: how the Taekwon Thornton of it all went down. But
- 22:13Speaker 1: if it isn't the way we did, you know, how
- 22:15Speaker 1: are those picks viewed now? If like, let's say, maybe
- 22:17Speaker 1: that maybe what people don't think. Maybe it was Macro
- 22:19Speaker 1: banging the table for cool. I don't know, but you know,
- 22:22Speaker 1: like like is our thing's gonna change? Like I don't
- 22:24Speaker 1: know whose picks those were, but I don't think it was.
- 22:27Speaker 1: And I don't think last year's draft was was the
- 22:28Speaker 1: home run that they needed, And now it just puts
- 22:31Speaker 1: more pressure on this year. Yep. The one guy, you know,
- 22:34Speaker 1: I like Macro a lot and I like Cam Williams
- 22:37Speaker 1: a lot. Yeah, I've gotten to know him a little
- 22:38Speaker 1: bit at the Shrine Bowl and it's at BC's Pro
- 22:41Speaker 1: day the other day and he went to Ohio State.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Cam Williams did play football for the buck Eys linebacker,
- 22:47Speaker 1: and they really don't like Ohio State guys in the draft.
- 22:50Speaker 1: They never draft buck Eyes. So I made a joke
- 22:52Speaker 1: about that with him talking to him and Jackson Smith
- 22:56Speaker 1: and Jigba, Dwan Jones, Paris Johnson's Zach Harris. I mean,
- 22:59Speaker 1: there's a lot of Buckeyes. Every year, there's a lot
- 23:01Speaker 1: of Buckeyes. But in this draft, there's a lot of
- 23:03Speaker 1: guys that fit in their range of the draft that
- 23:07Speaker 1: they are going to be on the board, And you
- 23:09Speaker 1: just wonder if like one of those things ends up
- 23:11Speaker 1: one of those trends ends up breaking because there's a
- 23:13Speaker 1: guy in the room that now has Ohio State bloodlines
- 23:16Speaker 1: and is pounding the table for js N. So they
- 23:19Speaker 1: actually go out and draft a Buckeye. You know who
- 23:23Speaker 1: was the last Buckeye that they drafted in the first
- 23:25Speaker 1: two rounds? Was it Andy Katz? And I was going
- 23:27Speaker 1: to say, that's the only one that comes to mind
- 23:29Speaker 1: for me. The only guy that that it was Terry Glenn.
- 23:31Speaker 1: So so the only Ohio State guy that I can
- 23:33Speaker 1: think of that they drafted anywhere recently was Nate Ebner,
- 23:37Speaker 1: and he was a Day three rugby player that they
- 23:41Speaker 1: took a special teams flier. He didn't even play Football's
- 23:44Speaker 1: Belichick pick that predates Belichick. Oh okay, that was a
- 23:48Speaker 1: Pete Carroll pick. Ebner might be their only Ohio State
- 23:51Speaker 1: guy that Belichick's ever drafted, which was a very Yeah,
- 23:55Speaker 1: that is a little lot. I never really thought of it.
- 23:57Speaker 1: I mean that that is a premier program that has
- 24:00Speaker 1: been at the top of the game for the entirety
- 24:03Speaker 1: of Belichick's tenure. The other one is a Penn State.
- 24:07Speaker 1: They don't take Penn State guys either, never have and
- 24:10Speaker 1: so Joey Porter Jr. Penn State. Yeah they're going to
- 24:13Speaker 1: take a Penn State guy or they not. You know,
- 24:15Speaker 1: there's programs like that. You know, everybody connects Iowa to
- 24:18Speaker 1: the Patriots because the kirk Ferns, they've taken one Iowa
- 24:21Speaker 1: player the whole bell I always wondering with these things
- 24:24Speaker 1: like is it really an aversion to that particular program
- 24:27Speaker 1: or is it just kind of the way it's worked.
- 24:29Speaker 1: It's starting to paying a picture for me that he
- 24:32Speaker 1: doesn't like the Big ten, which I would agree with
- 24:33Speaker 1: him on, but to me, the yeah, the separation would
- 24:39Speaker 1: be Ohio State. I would stay away from the Big
- 24:41Speaker 1: Ten in general, but I wouldn't stay away from Ohio State. No.
- 24:45Speaker 1: The best team. Yeah well yeah he and he has
- 24:49Speaker 1: drafted Michigan guys. But it's like even to like Cole Strange,
- 24:52Speaker 1: I'm sure Cole Strange is the pick, all things considered,
- 24:55Speaker 1: that broke some kind of trend that you know, like
- 24:57Speaker 1: he's never taken small school. They never taking a power
- 25:00Speaker 1: five linemen until uh Strange or nonpower five linemen in
- 25:06Speaker 1: years until until Strange, so that that was definitely a
- 25:10Speaker 1: strange a trend. Well, call me a sucker, but I'm
- 25:14Speaker 1: I'm always optimistic in this respect. I am too though
- 25:18Speaker 1: I have that I still have that cock eyed optimist
- 25:21Speaker 1: about the draft, just because I like the energy of
- 25:23Speaker 1: getting new young players in, even if they're not the
- 25:25Speaker 1: guys you totally wanted. And I and this is cold
- 25:27Speaker 1: Strange a great example of just a guy that a
- 25:31Speaker 1: football aside. It's it's nice to get these guys who
- 25:33Speaker 1: are good, young, tough football players in. Maybe it's not
- 25:36Speaker 1: where people want, it's I I am remaining optimistic about it.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I have to be down, Like listen that the recent
- 25:43Speaker 1: track record is what it is, and it's not really
- 25:45Speaker 1: I mean the side of the wall. Guys, you know,
- 25:48Speaker 1: the Jerry Thornton's will defend it. I won't. I mean,
- 25:50Speaker 1: it hasn't been good the last five or six years.
- 25:52Speaker 1: You know, generally they've had some good draft picks. But
- 25:55Speaker 1: I'm not as down on Belichick in general the draft
- 25:58Speaker 1: or as a lot of other people. Andy used to
- 26:00Speaker 1: yell at me all the time. Yeah, it was called
- 26:02Speaker 1: him a very good drafter andany like wanted to come
- 26:05Speaker 1: across the table at me, like it's intense. You know.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Maybe I'd have to take the very away from it
- 26:11Speaker 1: now because of what's happened in the last four or
- 26:12Speaker 1: five years. But I think there has been enough examples
- 26:17Speaker 1: of him really having strong draft classes that and I again,
- 26:21Speaker 1: I don't think it was Poli. I don't think it
- 26:23Speaker 1: was Cassio. I don't think it's you know, Ziegler, and
- 26:27Speaker 1: I don't think it's Matt grow I think it's Bill Belichick.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I've always thought that, and I always will until he's
- 26:33Speaker 1: no longer in that job. Yeah, but I think to
- 26:36Speaker 1: that point though, Paul, I mean, look at like the
- 26:37Speaker 1: twenty nineteen draft, now it's just like as you're getting
- 26:40Speaker 1: post Brady, like that's that's a death sentence. I can't
- 26:42Speaker 1: due the death sentence. I can't argue and I argue everything.
- 26:45Speaker 1: I can't argue this. And it hasn't been good lately.
- 26:48Speaker 1: And there you know, I'm sure that you could go
- 26:49Speaker 1: back into the early two thousands and you know that
- 26:51Speaker 1: draft stunk, you know, and I'm sure that there were
- 26:53Speaker 1: a couple, but it's just unfortunately the timing of it
- 26:56Speaker 1: all when you when you lost Brady, this is when
- 26:58Speaker 1: you needed to hit home run out of the drafts
- 27:03Speaker 1: is that I can't. I can't get on them. If
- 27:06Speaker 1: they take Zay Flowers in the first round and he
- 27:09Speaker 1: ends up being bad, he ends up being a bust
- 27:11Speaker 1: because you get it, can't be can't get on them like, Okay,
- 27:13Speaker 1: you drafted a name, a name brand guy who's a
- 27:16Speaker 1: first round pick from everybody's board and he just didn't
- 27:19Speaker 1: work out, Like okay, fine, but we're not in the
- 27:23Speaker 1: in the time anymore where they can go off the
- 27:27Speaker 1: beaten path like they did last year with Cole Stranger,
- 27:30Speaker 1: even like they did with Devin mccordy. I thought that
- 27:32Speaker 1: was really interesting from his retirement press conference, talking about
- 27:35Speaker 1: how he really wasn't a consensus first round guy when
- 27:39Speaker 1: they took him, but they had they they're there, you know,
- 27:43Speaker 1: they were able to take those risks back then and
- 27:46Speaker 1: and able to take guys that I think what he's
- 27:49Speaker 1: good at, you know, Bill is taking guys that fit
- 27:52Speaker 1: the program, that that fit a specific role in the system.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Like we know that this guy's gonna do this, this
- 27:58Speaker 1: and this, and he's gonna play here. But they need
- 28:01Speaker 1: guys that are just transcendent talents that that are just
- 28:03Speaker 1: elite talents that doesn't matter where you plug them in.
- 28:07Speaker 1: It doesn't matter if they're playing here, if they're playing
- 28:09Speaker 1: in a West Coast system or a spread scheme, whatever.
- 28:13Speaker 1: They're just good football players and they're gonna be good
- 28:16Speaker 1: football players anyway. It's almost like you get in trouble
- 28:19Speaker 1: with the draft when blank and one of those answers
- 28:22Speaker 1: is when you overthink it, Yeah, when you overthink it, yeah,
- 28:26Speaker 1: you know, yeah, I mean, and I would say that
- 28:28Speaker 1: trading up and down, and obviously you have to do
- 28:30Speaker 1: your diligence. You have to look into the past, you
- 28:33Speaker 1: have to look into character, you have to you know,
- 28:35Speaker 1: you can't overthink that. But when you overthink the tape.
- 28:39Speaker 1: But one of the one of the overthoughts for him
- 28:42Speaker 1: is what Mike just kind of touched on. And I
- 28:46Speaker 1: don't have a problem with trading and moving around, but
- 28:48Speaker 1: I think that they have the idea of trading for
- 28:51Speaker 1: them is I think, and this is not anything I
- 28:54Speaker 1: have any proof of, specifically with the mindset of I
- 28:58Speaker 1: like three or four players, I'm going to move down.
- 29:01Speaker 1: One of them is going to be available. And I
- 29:02Speaker 1: don't like that idea because I don't ever think guys
- 29:05Speaker 1: are the same. Yeah, like I'm not okay if I
- 29:09Speaker 1: can get Mike, Paul or Evan at twenty nine instead
- 29:13Speaker 1: of twenty one. I don't like that that philosophy, and
- 29:15Speaker 1: I think Bill adheres to it. I think, I don't know,
- 29:18Speaker 1: I think he does. See I don't mind that. I
- 29:21Speaker 1: think one of them out of Mike, Evan and Paul
- 29:23Speaker 1: is the pick. But as we take them as don't
- 29:26Speaker 1: roll the dice that they're going to be available as
- 29:29Speaker 1: long as your evaluation is sound, if it's true what
- 29:32Speaker 1: you're saying, that's good, and then I can get one
- 29:34Speaker 1: of those guys and another pack. And I think they
- 29:36Speaker 1: are I mean, I'm not going to give you all
- 29:38Speaker 1: the examples because again I don't have definitive proof, but
- 29:41Speaker 1: I think there are examples when they've done that and
- 29:44Speaker 1: it's really hurt. Yeah, and I think one of them
- 29:46Speaker 1: happened last year in the first round. Yeah, and then
- 29:49Speaker 1: I could argue, Okay, their their evaluation wasn't sound like
- 29:52Speaker 1: they were wrong in the fact that they could get
- 29:55Speaker 1: equal value later they were wrong. But I would say
- 29:58Speaker 1: that for you know, just on surface, the higher you pick,
- 30:04Speaker 1: the better the player. So it's not even it's like
- 30:06Speaker 1: to me, it's a philosophy that's wrong. Like if you
- 30:09Speaker 1: you can sit there and say they're all the same,
- 30:13Speaker 1: they're not all the same. And Bill tells you that
- 30:15Speaker 1: that they're not all the same. He says it all
- 30:17Speaker 1: the time, just like he says players are never staying
- 30:19Speaker 1: the same from one year. Then you're either getting better
- 30:22Speaker 1: or you're getting worse. You're not staying the same. So
- 30:25Speaker 1: why does he think what doesn't really matter which guy
- 30:27Speaker 1: I get. I trust you, you're the greatest coach who's
- 30:30Speaker 1: ever played, I mean coached. I trust you to pick
- 30:33Speaker 1: the guy that is better, right, and then but then
- 30:36Speaker 1: the more talented guy that's the guy I want. The
- 30:39Speaker 1: only time I like disagree is like you probably could
- 30:41Speaker 1: have gotten an equivalent the cold strange if and then
- 30:44Speaker 1: he's probably not a great example because I think that
- 30:46Speaker 1: that was a that was a panic reach, is what
- 30:50Speaker 1: I think it was. Yeah, okay, but like I think
- 30:54Speaker 1: there's been examples where he's just decided like it doesn't matter, like, yeah,
- 30:59Speaker 1: I might need a corner, I might need one of
- 31:01Speaker 1: those guys would be available, and then I'll take ROSSI dalling,
- 31:04Speaker 1: you know, because he was available. Well, like you know,
- 31:09Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe you've heard it. I think I've
- 31:11Speaker 1: heard the saying trust your board. You know you you
- 31:14Speaker 1: you spend all this offseason and really the whole season
- 31:17Speaker 1: before building a board, and once you get to draft day,
- 31:21Speaker 1: trusted trust it. If you've got these three guys stacked,
- 31:25Speaker 1: trust your board. You know, don't because we do stack
- 31:29Speaker 1: it vertically. But don't throw away, don't throw away all
- 31:33Speaker 1: the work that you've done to build that board on
- 31:36Speaker 1: draft day because for a panic reach or you know whatever.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Trust your board because there's been a lot of work
- 31:43Speaker 1: that went into building that board. Yeah it was work.
- 31:46Speaker 1: And what board, because that's that's the problem. To me,
- 31:50Speaker 1: it just looking at it from an out, you know,
- 31:51Speaker 1: outside perspective. I admit, I, like Paul says, I have
- 31:54Speaker 1: no inside information on this whatsoever. But I would bet
- 31:58Speaker 1: a lot of money that Macro's board and Bill Belichick's
- 32:01Speaker 1: board do not look the same. I disagree. I think
- 32:04Speaker 1: it's one board. I think it's one board with Bill
- 32:07Speaker 1: making the ultimate decision. I think that the I can't
- 32:11Speaker 1: envision a scenario where the conversations that I'm able to
- 32:15Speaker 1: have with mac row that that man thought that Cole
- 32:20Speaker 1: Strange was the right pick in the first round last year.
- 32:22Speaker 1: I can't have that. And Bill loved, clearly loved him
- 32:25Speaker 1: and took him. I mean, maybe Bill has like a
- 32:27Speaker 1: little scrap a piece of paper with his own thing.
- 32:29Speaker 1: But when we go in with our cameras on draft day,
- 32:32Speaker 1: there's one board. That there's one board, and Bill ultimately
- 32:36Speaker 1: sets it. Yeah, but I think Evan's point is if
- 32:40Speaker 1: they were going in with one board and it was
- 32:42Speaker 1: up to Matt grow it wouldn't look the same as
- 32:44Speaker 1: the one that they go in. I didn't say it
- 32:45Speaker 1: was up to I just said it's up to Bill. No, No,
- 32:48Speaker 1: I no, I get that. Yeah, But when you know
- 32:51Speaker 1: I'm speaking for you now, you're when when when Evan's
- 32:55Speaker 1: saying I think mac Row would have a board that
- 32:57Speaker 1: looks a lot different than Bill's, he's not suggesting they
- 33:00Speaker 1: go in with two different boards. And mac Row says, no,
- 33:03Speaker 1: we should take this guy because I have him here,
- 33:04Speaker 1: And Bill says, no, I'm going to override you. No.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Bill ultimately decides, and he might have guys that are
- 33:10Speaker 1: way differently ranked than than mac Gerel. Would I think
- 33:13Speaker 1: any two people's boards should be different. How could you
- 33:16Speaker 1: possibly have the same board as Moss different so any
- 33:21Speaker 1: two people could look at three hundred prospects and rank
- 33:24Speaker 1: them differently. I don't know if you'll agree with this, Evan,
- 33:26Speaker 1: but I like from my experience, you know, I screw around.
- 33:28Speaker 1: I get like, you know, start putting my big board
- 33:30Speaker 1: together and who I like and all those things. And
- 33:32Speaker 1: then I'm like, Card, I'm gonna stick to my big
- 33:33Speaker 1: board and this mock draft. And then I get to
- 33:34Speaker 1: the dude the like you know, mock draft stimulation. I'm like,
- 33:37Speaker 1: I can't draft that guy at fourteen, you know, like
- 33:39Speaker 1: it always kind of works out that way that you're like,
- 33:41Speaker 1: that's why I would be terrible at it because every
- 33:43Speaker 1: time I'm on the board, I look like I don't
- 33:44Speaker 1: want any of the right I know, and I think
- 33:46Speaker 1: that's what Bill does any trades down right, I think
- 33:49Speaker 1: that's exactly how we get in trouble. It's funny. I mean,
- 33:53Speaker 1: it's it's they just they need to figure it out
- 33:56Speaker 1: this year. And I mean, but I can't help. But
- 33:57Speaker 1: like I gotta bring it up though, Like shouldn't Bill
- 34:00Speaker 1: have to control of the board, like you know what
- 34:01Speaker 1: I mean, Like, like I'm not he should know he should. Yes, No,
- 34:06Speaker 1: he's the head coach, I mean, and GM it comes
- 34:09Speaker 1: down to him. I fred, He's put together pretty successful
- 34:12Speaker 1: programs over the past twenty years. He should he It
- 34:15Speaker 1: should all come down to him. But it all it
- 34:17Speaker 1: all comes down to, like how much faith does he
- 34:20Speaker 1: put in his scouting department? You know, you know, is
- 34:24Speaker 1: he is he willing to go with their opinion. I'm
- 34:28Speaker 1: under the opinion that I agree with Paul, Like everybody
- 34:32Speaker 1: has different opinions and the same player. But by the
- 34:35Speaker 1: time draft day comes, all those opinions should be in
- 34:38Speaker 1: the barn. Yes, you know, like by that time we
- 34:41Speaker 1: should have a consensus. Is what Bill says, but it's Bills. Yeah,
- 34:46Speaker 1: I know he overrides, well I think he he but
- 34:50Speaker 1: he might override during the process, but by the time
- 34:53Speaker 1: you get to draft day, the overriding has been done
- 34:57Speaker 1: because the decision, because you're saying, Fred, he's not looking
- 35:01Speaker 1: at that board that's in their room, that is set
- 35:03Speaker 1: and they get to their pick and there's the guy
- 35:05Speaker 1: that should be and Bill says, you know what, Actually,
- 35:07Speaker 1: you guys right right, yeah, we're gonna skip the ninth guy.
- 35:13Speaker 1: He puts twenty one ahead of men. It's already go
- 35:15Speaker 1: in there. And then that's why you see Macrow just
- 35:18Speaker 1: do Yeah. And I don't listen. I have more faith
- 35:21Speaker 1: in Bill than obviously Evan Listen the best example, and
- 35:27Speaker 1: it's indisputable. I don't I don't care what anyone cas
- 35:30Speaker 1: It is just like a whole world evolution change. But
- 35:32Speaker 1: I'm defending. But the indisputable evidence of that, no matter
- 35:35Speaker 1: what Bill says or anyone else, is during the Rutgers
- 35:38Speaker 1: years with Siano, Yeah, Bill put Devin mccordy above everybody else.
- 35:43Speaker 1: I mean, let's face it, you know, or to Ron Harmon,
- 35:45Speaker 1: But I I think I gave you the information there
- 35:48Speaker 1: on on that draft though that I gave you the facts.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Like Bill loves to say, you know the one of
- 35:56Speaker 1: us she drafts, Well, No, actually, Bill, there was thirty
- 35:59Speaker 1: five draft x Rich that would pull. The worst grade
- 36:02Speaker 1: that you got was a bee, but first grade. But
- 36:04Speaker 1: if my point, Devin mccordy by all accounts was a
- 36:08Speaker 1: late first early second round prospect. But my point is
- 36:11Speaker 1: if anyone where they took him, My point is if
- 36:14Speaker 1: anyone in the room liked other people over Devin mccordy,
- 36:18Speaker 1: Bill over Row with that, Yeah, yes, and you know
- 36:22Speaker 1: the same with a lot of those Rutgers guys. He's lost,
- 36:24Speaker 1: he's lost that dost trust from me. What I would
- 36:27Speaker 1: like to see, That's what I would like to see
- 36:30Speaker 1: happen is Bill goes to macro and says, Matt, I
- 36:35Speaker 1: need a receiver, I need a tackle, and I need
- 36:38Speaker 1: a corner because that was our That's what I need
- 36:41Speaker 1: to to turn this team around right now. And I
- 36:44Speaker 1: want Grow picking up the players because I don't you
- 36:50Speaker 1: just want somebody other than Bill or is this something
- 36:53Speaker 1: about Grow that you like? Because I have not been
- 36:55Speaker 1: impressed with the way Grows speaks after these drafts. I
- 36:58Speaker 1: haven't been really impressed with a lot of the grow factor.
- 37:02Speaker 1: I think grow Cam Williams. I won't put Elliott in
- 37:08Speaker 1: this category because think Elliot Wolf is more pro Cam
- 37:12Speaker 1: Williams more more pro personnel guy Dead and Draft, but
- 37:15Speaker 1: maybe him a little bit too. I think the two
- 37:18Speaker 1: of them, though, especially Cam Williams and Macro, I think
- 37:21Speaker 1: that they understand the game in twenty twenty three a
- 37:24Speaker 1: little bit better than Bill does. I think that that's
- 37:26Speaker 1: probably fair. I didn't like the way, um, grow you
- 37:30Speaker 1: know this is gonna be funny, goofy guy funny coming
- 37:33Speaker 1: from me. I didn't like the way he snarkily sort
- 37:36Speaker 1: of chastised us all about you're grinding the tape on
- 37:39Speaker 1: one that remember that last year. There's been little things
- 37:43Speaker 1: like that that I like. Was that you that he
- 37:45Speaker 1: said it to him. No, it wasn't, probably should have been,
- 37:48Speaker 1: but I didn't. I didn't mean that if it was,
- 37:51Speaker 1: because I wasn't even in the room. I was listening,
- 37:53Speaker 1: because we would do in the show when we were
- 37:54Speaker 1: hearing all that stuff, so we're not even in the room.
- 37:57Speaker 1: But like, I didn't like the way he taught Like
- 37:59Speaker 1: I think he he uses a lot of like punchline,
- 38:01Speaker 1: like a lot of punch words, you know, like you know,
- 38:04Speaker 1: you you want to want to want to be faster
- 38:06Speaker 1: as a team, you go to draft fast, Like, yeah,
- 38:08Speaker 1: he defended the picks last year. He definitely did. He did.
- 38:11Speaker 1: He went to bad for all of those picks because
- 38:13Speaker 1: a lot of us were but kind of like finger
- 38:15Speaker 1: wagging as he was defending him, you know, like that's fair.
- 38:18Speaker 1: I think when all of us wanted George Pickens and
- 38:22Speaker 1: they take Taekwon Thornton. So then we get into these
- 38:24Speaker 1: press conferences and it's like, okay, well why did you
- 38:26Speaker 1: take Taykwon Thornton over the consensus guys? You know George
- 38:29Speaker 1: Pickens sky more, you know, and then he mocked or
- 38:32Speaker 1: whatever for you know, it's like it's like Colonel Jessup, like, yeah,
- 38:36Speaker 1: you know, questions the way I provided, Really, I just
- 38:39Speaker 1: rather have you say thank you and beyond with it,
- 38:42Speaker 1: like I'm sorry. Like a lot of people, ever included,
- 38:45Speaker 1: do a lot of work on these draft picks, and
- 38:47Speaker 1: they have like some thoughts and opinions are they not
- 38:49Speaker 1: allowed to express them? But just because I don't, it
- 38:52Speaker 1: doesn't mean that nobody else does, especially based off of
- 38:54Speaker 1: what's happened recently where they don't have the trust anymore
- 38:58Speaker 1: to be like we're always you have five or six
- 39:00Speaker 1: years in a row where you have like one and
- 39:02Speaker 1: a half, you know, reasonably good drafts. That's that's how
- 39:06Speaker 1: you put it. That's it right there, you know. I'm like,
- 39:09Speaker 1: I think the twenty draft is looking better probably now
- 39:13Speaker 1: than it did last year at this time. You know,
- 39:15Speaker 1: with Ucha's ascension down the stretch last year, and when
- 39:19Speaker 1: You's been good, Dougger's been solid, that's a good drafty.
- 39:22Speaker 1: And then I don't think the next year. I don't
- 39:23Speaker 1: think the next year's draft looked as good as it
- 39:25Speaker 1: did last year at this time. I know. But with
- 39:27Speaker 1: Mack and Barmore. Yeah, but I'm still high on Barmore.
- 39:31Speaker 1: You can still be high on them, but you have
- 39:33Speaker 1: to be less high than you were last year. But
- 39:36Speaker 1: even when even those pick because of injury or yeah,
- 39:39Speaker 1: even but the twenty twenty and twenty twenty one draft,
- 39:43Speaker 1: both of those drafts, I know people are gonna say, well,
- 39:46Speaker 1: Dugger played at Lenora. Dugger was a top fifty prospect
- 39:49Speaker 1: in that draft. Yeah, another one that was not drafted
- 39:51Speaker 1: away from where everybody thought he was projected. People make
- 39:54Speaker 1: that out to be a cold, strange pick, not like
- 39:56Speaker 1: look and he did when when you guys all laughed
- 39:59Speaker 1: when he took No, we didn't. No, No, he was
- 40:01Speaker 1: a second round pick. Yeah, by everybody's account, I look
- 40:04Speaker 1: at the way other people stacked the board, not the
- 40:06Speaker 1: way I stacked. So everybody had him in the second right.
- 40:09Speaker 1: So my point is, is there two best drafts of
- 40:11Speaker 1: the last lest call at half decade or when they
- 40:13Speaker 1: went by the board when they said dugger Josh ucha
- 40:18Speaker 1: on when it in the sixth round was a steel
- 40:20Speaker 1: at the time. You know, we all a lot of
- 40:21Speaker 1: us that do all this homework on it. You know,
- 40:23Speaker 1: I had I thought on when it was going to
- 40:25Speaker 1: potentially be a fourth or you know, third or fourth
- 40:27Speaker 1: round pick. They get him in the sixth great pick.
- 40:29Speaker 1: And then the next year Mac Barmore, Ramandre, even Ronnie Perkins,
- 40:33Speaker 1: who hasn't been you know, panned out was a guy
- 40:35Speaker 1: that all of us had, you know, were third round
- 40:38Speaker 1: and they went Alabama, Alabama, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, And everybody was like,
- 40:42Speaker 1: thank you, right, are you're taking quality players from quality programs? Correct?
- 40:47Speaker 1: Why Why is that so hard? Why why do we
- 40:49Speaker 1: have to have a draft like last year where where
- 40:52Speaker 1: you just go completely off the reservation, like, why can't
- 40:55Speaker 1: we just stick to the board, And I under it's
- 40:59Speaker 1: not just to please us, like, it's also just because
- 41:01Speaker 1: more times than not, the guys that played at those
- 41:04Speaker 1: blue blood programs end up being the best players. Yeah.
- 41:06Speaker 1: And when you look at the way a lot of
- 41:08Speaker 1: people have these things rated, and I'm saying it's there's
- 41:11Speaker 1: no guarantees, and if the guys that are doing the
- 41:15Speaker 1: projections were perfect, they probably be working for teams. So
- 41:20Speaker 1: I understand that. But to Evan's point, you have a
- 41:24Speaker 1: guy like a when you who a lot of people
- 41:26Speaker 1: thought was going to be a round or two higher,
- 41:29Speaker 1: well you get excited about that. Conversely, when you take
- 41:34Speaker 1: Cole Strange three rounds before everybody had him going, that's
- 41:37Speaker 1: that's a red flag, like why did everybody else have
- 41:39Speaker 1: him going so much later than you picked him? Yeah,
- 41:42Speaker 1: and then when he gets by the coach, not by Paul.
- 41:45Speaker 1: The coach took him out of three different games because
- 41:49Speaker 1: he was struggling. I'm sorry, that looks like a bad pick. Now,
- 41:52Speaker 1: does that mean he's a bust? No? One year in
- 41:54Speaker 1: just like I don't like to just automatically declare a
- 41:57Speaker 1: guy who makes a has a good rookie year a
- 42:00Speaker 1: home run because it's one year. You have to wait
- 42:02Speaker 1: and see what happens over the court. You know, does
- 42:05Speaker 1: he get the second contract? That to me is kind
- 42:07Speaker 1: of what you're looking for. Yeah, like you know, is
- 42:10Speaker 1: Josh j gonna get a second contract? It's just it's
- 42:13Speaker 1: just I don't know. It's just so hard at the
- 42:15Speaker 1: point that they are though, because it's like, even if
- 42:16Speaker 1: they absolutely hit the col Strange pick out of the park,
- 42:20Speaker 1: what difference does it make last year? That that's a
- 42:23Speaker 1: Paul argument for a different day. Like, you know, I'm
- 42:27Speaker 1: more different. I need difference making players, you know, special,
- 42:31Speaker 1: you know, planet kind of players I want to take with.
- 42:34Speaker 1: That's what they need. They need difference makers talent and
- 42:38Speaker 1: the best the best guard isn't gonna be And I'm
- 42:41Speaker 1: sorry to all the guards out there, but that's always
- 42:43Speaker 1: the position. I'm like, my son plays guard. You can
- 42:45Speaker 1: get a guard that was pick even at the time,
- 42:50Speaker 1: and nothing to do with cold Strange. It's just that
- 42:52Speaker 1: you needed a premium talent at a premium position, and
- 42:55Speaker 1: you took a guard in the first round. And my
- 42:57Speaker 1: my take at the time was you go into Buffalo
- 43:00Speaker 1: next year, is Cole Strange gonna gonna help you beat
- 43:03Speaker 1: the Bills? What would your reaction to bent they got
- 43:05Speaker 1: to Zion Johnson and that and that because he was
- 43:09Speaker 1: the guy that's supposed to be there, I would feel
- 43:10Speaker 1: better about it, but I just still feel I would
- 43:13Speaker 1: I would say, Zion Johnson's not allowing you to go
- 43:15Speaker 1: into Buffalo and win, right right right, Like I kind
- 43:18Speaker 1: of think Evans point on that is accurate. And I
- 43:20Speaker 1: also like Michael Awen you right again, We'll stick with him.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Sixth round pick. That's where I want to take my lineman,
- 43:28Speaker 1: especially my interior lineman. I understand that if you want
- 43:31Speaker 1: a really good left tackle, you've got to invest a
- 43:34Speaker 1: pretty high pick in it, you know, more than likely.
- 43:37Speaker 1: But I think you can get the rest of those
- 43:39Speaker 1: spots in the middle to late rounds and you're gonna
- 43:42Speaker 1: draft a lot of linemen and most of them aren't
- 43:44Speaker 1: going to pan out. You're gonna have a lot of
- 43:46Speaker 1: Corey Hilliards and Ted Larson's that go, you know, go
- 43:49Speaker 1: go their separate ways. But you're gonna hit on a
- 43:51Speaker 1: Michael when you or a Dan Copin and you're gonna
- 43:54Speaker 1: have good late round offensive lineman that help your team.
- 43:57Speaker 1: I mean, their interior trio for multiple super Bowls was
- 44:00Speaker 1: Tuney Andrews. Mason. Tuney was a third round pick. Shack
- 44:04Speaker 1: was a fourth round pick in Andrews draft. Well, at
- 44:08Speaker 1: that point, even I want to ask you this because
- 44:10Speaker 1: I saw your tweet about Dante's grunning about Roderick Jones,
- 44:13Speaker 1: and you know, I think you made a good point
- 44:15Speaker 1: on Twitter just saying they don't draft you know, a
- 44:17Speaker 1: guy who only played one year. It's it's experience. But
- 44:20Speaker 1: you know, like, can we make the argument now though
- 44:22Speaker 1: that if that guy, even though he's not experienced, that
- 44:24Speaker 1: he has that blue chip potential, that it's worth taking
- 44:27Speaker 1: that risk even though he's not the most extreme even
- 44:30Speaker 1: look at his look at you have to list you
- 44:32Speaker 1: you actually I miss Matt Lte. Okay, it was because
- 44:36Speaker 1: you only this is what happens said six and there
- 44:39Speaker 1: were only five guys there. But the five guys that
- 44:42Speaker 1: you listed, I would say kind of not the most
- 44:45Speaker 1: impressive list. Right, So this is where you know draft
- 44:50Speaker 1: nerd me and predicted me get into battles, because that
- 44:53Speaker 1: is a that is that tweet was about predicting right
- 44:56Speaker 1: of what they would do, not what I would necessarily do,
- 44:59Speaker 1: because I love Roderick Jones, but they like older lineman,
- 45:03Speaker 1: they like seniors, they like multi year starters, they like
- 45:06Speaker 1: guys that went to the Senior Bowl, in particular early
- 45:09Speaker 1: in the draft. Now, I think the rebuttal to it is,
- 45:12Speaker 1: I think what you were kind of getting at, Mike
- 45:14Speaker 1: is they've never really had a chance to draft one
- 45:17Speaker 1: of these Broderick Jones guys because they don't draft that
- 45:19Speaker 1: high most years. So when they're up this high, maybe
- 45:22Speaker 1: that changes because they don't necessarily when they're down lower,
- 45:25Speaker 1: they take the more experienced guys, but when they're up high,
- 45:28Speaker 1: they take the high upside guy. I don't know, but
- 45:30Speaker 1: Broderick Jones has nineteen starts at Georgia, and his past
- 45:34Speaker 1: sets are raw. He needs a lot of work in
- 45:36Speaker 1: terms of his path protection technique and things like that footwork,
- 45:40Speaker 1: hand usage, you know, all that little nitty gritty stuff.
- 45:42Speaker 1: So he's a little bit of a project, you know,
- 45:45Speaker 1: And I think that that's not typically their m O. Yeah,
- 45:49Speaker 1: And then but then I would just tie it to
- 45:50Speaker 1: cold strange because I mean, although experienced, still very raw
- 45:55Speaker 1: as well. And you know, so it's like at a
- 45:56Speaker 1: certain point, Hey, why don't you just bite the bullet on.
- 45:59Speaker 1: You're gonna take some this kid like they took cold Strange.
- 46:01Speaker 1: But you names are it's cold strange, right, yes, Matt Light, Um,
- 46:07Speaker 1: Nate Solder, Logan Mankins, Sea Bass No, Clem okay, so
- 46:14Speaker 1: there was another one that we're missing, but you know,
- 46:17Speaker 1: Clem bust strange. Not a great start, I'd say, Solder okay,
- 46:23Speaker 1: but nothing more than okay. So right now, Matt Light excellent,
- 46:28Speaker 1: Logan Mankins more than excellent. Yeah, but I think if
- 46:33Speaker 1: it'd be one thing, if you use that philosophy, they've
- 46:36Speaker 1: only done it six times, you'd be like, oh, they
- 46:39Speaker 1: that must be a tried and true philosophy. They must
- 46:42Speaker 1: bang it out of the park every time. No, it's
- 46:44Speaker 1: like a fifty fifty prop Yeah, you know, I mean
- 46:47Speaker 1: Solder for his for his warts, gave you some Soldier
- 46:51Speaker 1: was fine, he was okay. But I if I'm going
- 46:53Speaker 1: to draft the tackle in the first round friend and
- 46:55Speaker 1: Nate's soldier was one of my all time favorite Patriots,
- 46:57Speaker 1: by the way, I would I want something better than
- 47:00Speaker 1: if I'm drafting at seventeen. You know, you think Roderick
- 47:03Speaker 1: Jones is better than that. I would imagine in terms
- 47:05Speaker 1: of athletic upside yes, like and he was pretty athletic,
- 47:09Speaker 1: I have to say. I mean it was like a
- 47:10Speaker 1: tight end for a while, you know, I was famous,
- 47:13Speaker 1: and I don't think Matt has the I used to
- 47:15Speaker 1: the stupid podcast that we would do. You know, when
- 47:17Speaker 1: we did Tackles, I gave it the the you know,
- 47:20Speaker 1: the cheap, cheap punch. Nate Solder not sold and of course,
- 47:24Speaker 1: what does that mean? What do we do first? We
- 47:26Speaker 1: draft from in the first round. So I have to
- 47:27Speaker 1: have that played for me over and over and over again.
- 47:29Speaker 1: And he turns out to be one of the nicest
- 47:31Speaker 1: human beings that I've ever come across in that locker room.
- 47:34Speaker 1: I think I might have said it on the show,
- 47:35Speaker 1: but when we were talking a sea bass in Indie,
- 47:38Speaker 1: he said he thought Soldier was too tall to play,
- 47:40Speaker 1: like just a little too tall, had trouble with the
- 47:43Speaker 1: smaller guys that could get underneath him. And thought that
- 47:46Speaker 1: was interesting. You know, earlier in the Shum'm sorry, Fred
- 47:48Speaker 1: one last thing. Earlier in the show, I thought it
- 47:50Speaker 1: was interesting when you know Evan you talked about like, um,
- 47:53Speaker 1: you know Bill sometimes is you know, he'll do a
- 47:56Speaker 1: reach here, or he'll do something a little bit unconventional,
- 48:00Speaker 1: and I think that that has served him well at
- 48:03Speaker 1: times in the past. He's taking some guys that I
- 48:06Speaker 1: used to argue with Fred like, you know, he would say,
- 48:08Speaker 1: like it's Bill, he's brilliant. You know, Gronk or Sebastian Volmer,
- 48:14Speaker 1: it'd be another one Sbashion. Volmer is the good outlier
- 48:16Speaker 1: to this whole thing. So yes, I would argue there
- 48:20Speaker 1: are twenty eight teams that probably would have loved to
- 48:22Speaker 1: have taken a chance on a guy like Gronk because
- 48:25Speaker 1: they see its exactly what everybody else sees. But there's
- 48:28Speaker 1: only Andy Reid, probably John Harbaugh, Bill Belichick. There's not
- 48:34Speaker 1: that many guys that are that comfortable that they can
- 48:37Speaker 1: take a guy who didn't play his last year in
- 48:40Speaker 1: college because of a serious back injury and say, you
- 48:44Speaker 1: know what, it doesn't matter if it doesn't pan out,
- 48:46Speaker 1: doesn't pan out. I'm Bill Belichick. I've won six titles.
- 48:49Speaker 1: You know at the time, I've won three titles. You
- 48:52Speaker 1: know where am I going? They're not going to fire
- 48:53Speaker 1: me whereas you know, Kevin Stefanski can't make that pick
- 48:58Speaker 1: because he's out of a job if it doesn't pan.
- 49:00Speaker 1: And that was what last year's draft was with Cole
- 49:02Speaker 1: Strange was one of those we're going to just do
- 49:04Speaker 1: what we wanted to do. Sometimes it doesn't work, you know.
- 49:06Speaker 1: But I also worked with Gronk, right, But I also
- 49:09Speaker 1: just think where the rope is running out on him
- 49:12Speaker 1: to have that, I agree that sort of would. I
- 49:15Speaker 1: would also like to see draft tendencies on teams where
- 49:18Speaker 1: the coach is also the GM verse, where the GM
- 49:21Speaker 1: has the power, Like if there's any pattern that you
- 49:25Speaker 1: can derive of tendencies, I'm not sure there's a ton
- 49:28Speaker 1: of guys like Bill though yeah I have the final say.
- 49:30Speaker 1: I mean there are some, but I don't think there's
- 49:32Speaker 1: a lot. Well, I think it's a good example in
- 49:34Speaker 1: San Francisco with Kyle Shanahan. I am still not convinced
- 49:38Speaker 1: that Trey Lance would have been Kyle Shanahan's pick. Trey
- 49:41Speaker 1: Lance feels like a scouting department's pick because of the
- 49:44Speaker 1: upside and the athletic tools. I still think to this
- 49:48Speaker 1: day that if it was up to Kyle Shanahan, they
- 49:50Speaker 1: would have stayed put and taken mac Jones. Well, I
- 49:53Speaker 1: think a Tennessee and this year with Rabel, he mean
- 49:56Speaker 1: close relationship with John Robinson clearly came, you know, and
- 49:58Speaker 1: overbled in coach here. But you know, how does that work?
- 50:01Speaker 1: I mean, like you really have to have a good relationship.
- 50:03Speaker 1: It's interesting where you know you're gonna bring a new
- 50:05Speaker 1: guy him, what's his philosophy going to be? How much
- 50:07Speaker 1: you know is he gonna work with Vrabel? I just
- 50:09Speaker 1: that I'm just off the top of your head. What
- 50:11Speaker 1: are the other coaches that have the final say? I
- 50:15Speaker 1: don't know, I know, I know there have been over
- 50:17Speaker 1: the years. I don't know right at this moment of like,
- 50:21Speaker 1: I can't think of one off the top of my head.
- 50:23Speaker 1: Like in Kansas City, Yeah, I mean Howie Roseman the Eagle. Oh,
- 50:27Speaker 1: he was all over the place that the owners mean.
- 50:28Speaker 1: You know, I'm trying to think of Bill Bryan famously
- 50:31Speaker 1: took power. Yes he had he had the control at
- 50:33Speaker 1: one point, you know, John Schneider Hasard in Syet. I'm
- 50:36Speaker 1: trying to think of the older coaches that might have
- 50:38Speaker 1: that that swag, you know, Ozzie Newsom in Da Costa,
- 50:42Speaker 1: in Baltimore. Um, like even the veteran head coaches. Yeah,
- 50:48Speaker 1: the Steelers don't have the final all right, that took
- 50:51Speaker 1: over for Kevin Colbert. Right, yeah, yeah, We'll take a
- 50:54Speaker 1: break now. I know you're hanging on the phone. Thank
- 50:56Speaker 1: you for that. We'll get to you right after this.

- 1:02:11Speaker 1: get comfortable. So I didn't. If I had picked up
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: on that, I would have realized that, you know, starting
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: one place and ending up in another place within the
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: same restaurant is not on friends because now I have
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: now I have to move. Not part of the experience
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: for me. I want to just settle in, get comfortable,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: check out the ambiance. Do you are you a big like? Hey,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: I'm too close to the bathrooms? Can I move? Hey
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I'm too close to the kitchen. Can I can I move?
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Did you get touched so much? Kitchen but bathroom? But
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: usually most restaurants I've been that's been an issue. Yeah,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: it's segregated. It's like there's usually like a little hallway
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: or something that places a person that comes in. Now,
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: do you ever eat off cape? Sure? Of course. It's
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: got a long drive us over a shot like how
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: you're you're just completely well, I let's I live on
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: cape now, so where I live, I don't know. I
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: like to drink at the bar before the table is ready,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: you like, especially in the song. I don't know why.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: I like it in the summer more like they get
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: like a summer we kind of drink. That's true, you
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: know it is no socks, no socks, that's all sucks.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: When we were in the bar, we went out, we
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: went He's the definition of sidling up. We went to
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: this Mexican place and the whole all of us are
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: there and we're all eating. We look over at the bar.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: There's no socks by himself at the bar, even though
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: we on a group. Tech said, w'ere and he knew that.

- 1:03:38Speaker 1: wanted to hang out at the bar. He didn't want
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: to hang out at the table. And then he just
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: comes back, you know, over to the table and get
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: a corona and order it. And then as soon as
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: they bring it to him, can I just say, I've
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: been here before, and so I know that this one
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: has a hole in it, so could you bring me
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: another one? I had a couple of different those first
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: night we were in Uh, we were in in Arizona.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: The bar had closed a like ten and it was
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: like ten oh five, and no socks of course talk
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: them into keeping the bar open. But then like the
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: next day, we were going out to dinner and like,
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: all right, everyone be down here at whatever, seven ten,
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: Like all right, seven time I come walking down, he's
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: he's at the bar. Deuce you want to drink. I'm like,
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: I'll just we're going to a party. Like I don't,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: I don't need to drink here, Like, let's just go
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: to the party. He lives for it, all right, Uh,
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: I promise we get to the phone calls and emails
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: when we come back, and that's what we're gonna do.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Eight five five, pass five hundred is the eighth ticket
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: out line. We'll start with Fidel and Tampa. Thank you
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: for holding on. Fidel, Hey, how are you guys? Good? Hey?
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: So I've been holding on to this one thing for
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: all off season, and my biggest thing was I was
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: craft I would say this is Bill's last season if
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: the playoffs or significant progress wasn't made. Um, the reason
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: why is you made a point Fred like defending Matt
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: Patricia and Bill Belichick kind of saying that, oh maybe
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: it was Bill asking Matt to do offense with Judge
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: for the year while we wait for Bill O'Brien, or
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: it was oh, can you just try it? Or maybe
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: even Matt Patricia volunteering for the position. Either way, if
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: I was Robert Kraft and I saw the performance Joe
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: Judge just had on the Giants going for a QB
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: sneak on third down, or if I saw Matte Patricist's
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: terrible performance with the Lions, I would not entrust my
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: billion dollar franchise have a coach who thinks these are
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: the best two candidates to lead this team. That is like,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: absolutely ridiculous that we're even excusing that fact this long
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: into it. That was with one reason. Another reason is
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: just the poor drafting. It's like everyone can play GM.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: I played Madden a couple of times a week, and
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: I don't think I'm saying this is Madden or anything.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: I'm saying anything like that. But I know I'm not
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: going to draft the guard in the top first or
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: two round. What's the best case scenario that we have
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: is we have a guard who's like, um, what's his
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: name from the Yeah? Yeah, Like the best case scenario
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: perfectly a great guy. Now we're paying a guard twenty
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: plus million dollars a year. We've just stated the fact
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: that our first or three interior guys all for the
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: last like six seven years, so part of our last
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: three year bowls. Now, before we let you go, like
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: what what does? What does? What are the Patriots have
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: to do for you to want to keep Belichick this year?
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: It significant progress? Like I need to see like Mac
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: and the team performing extremely. I don't want to see
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: one hundred yard games, zero touchdown, two picks. I don't
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: want to be seeing that. I don't want to be
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: seeing players missing assignment, running into each other. I wanted
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: to see us to get ten wins minimum, like ten wins, Okay,
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: I want ten wins. I mean I don't know how
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: you don't make the playoffs and have progress. I mean,
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: you have to make the playoffs to show progress. Thanks
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: for doll, Like, thanks for doll. Appreciate the call. Uh yeah,
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: I did notice, by the way, um, the slightly lowering
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: of the bar. Last year at the ONONUS meetings, it
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: was we haven't won a playoff game in three years. Yeah,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: that's just that. Just now we need to make the playoffs,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: should we talk about can should I bring up my
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: research this morning? You are you blasting two calls right now?
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: Go ahead. I was just gonna because because the whole
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: twenty five years things, I was like, well, how many
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: playoff teams have, Like, what's the record against playoff teams
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: in the last three years? You know, twenty twenty when
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: they played a playoff team in that season? Of course,
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: I asked Paul and he rattled them off exactly. They're
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: nineteen times they've including the Buffalo playoff game that they lost.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: What do you think the record is? Do you guys
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: know off the top of your nineteen games or nineteen
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: weren't fifteen? Excellent? Fred nailed it too. They're four and
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: fifteen over the last three seasons against playoff teams. And Paul,
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: do you want to run down the four what the
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: the factors were in those four winds? The wins over
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: playoff teams were New Year's Day last year against Miami
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: and Skylar Thompson. Uh. The year before that, it was
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: the Hurricane game in Buffalo, as well as the Tennessee
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: game against Without without anybody, it'd be easier to name
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: the guys that did play then didn't Uh. And then
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: the Cam Newton year, uh in the monsoon here against Baltimore.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: Those are the four wins over playoff teams. That's I mean,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: Brady left, I mean, that's what it really is. You know,
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: that's that's what you've been Yep. So that kind of
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: says a lot right there. I mean those are facts,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: and you know, yeah, yeah, um, let's go to Chris
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: and Scottsdale. What's up? Oh he didn't hang on, Williams
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: and Pellam thanks for holding on right good? Hey, no problem,
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: no problem. Um. Let me just say I've been a
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: Pictures fan for a long time and just I cannot
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: believe it's like this more dysfunction this off season compared
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: to the regular season when they were just going through
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: all you know, uh, you know with Matt Patricia and
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: Joe Judge and them being office courtineer and all this stuff,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: and then you have the owner and the coach not
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: on the same page. They don't need to be going
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: through this, we know all seasons. You should be trying
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: to get this team better if you're going with Mac Jones,
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: which evidently that you are, and you should be putting
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: the best time around them. And what's gonna make Max better,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Because mac ain't gonna make
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: nothing too much better. You gotta put things in place,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: but that's gonna make him better, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: So I'm just it's it's just blowing my mind with
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: this this nonsense and that mister Kraft putting out, you
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: know about the Lamar Jackson thing with Meek Mills and
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: all that. You know, to Evan, I was just saying
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: to you though, you know, it would have been cool
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: just to have him, But for mister Kraft to say
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: that that was a straight sucker move because you don't
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: own it. You could have did that if he really
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: wanted to you a billion dollars. You know, they're our franchise,
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: you the owner and all you could make moves over.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: If that's what you want to do, then you could
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: have did it. Period. There's no if answer. But about that, Okay, well,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: yeah it's and you're right, William, But it's interesting. Robert
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: Kraft never actually said that's what I want. He said
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: Lamar wants it, but it's up to Bill. He never
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: said I hope he comes here or I'd want him.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: He never he stopped short of that, you know, so
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: I wonder does he does he want him? I don't know,
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: I don't know, but but to do what he did
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: really opened up a can of worms. There's no doubt
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: about it. Yeah, look look what it did. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I agree. And now one more thing and that's it. Uh,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: this this one's dude, dude, you okay, you always say
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: about the draft, the draft to draft, you do know
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: and you are aware that are that Bill Belichick, our coach,
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: basically is having a hard time drafting. You are aware
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: of that though, right? Sure? Okay? And also you know,
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: you know him drafting a guard in the first round,
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: which kind of pissed me off basically, but I was
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: just like, I can't believe you did that. So what
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: give me some faith for going into this draft? That
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: makes you think that he's going to do this right
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: this time? I didn't. I never said that. Why are
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: you Why are you going to me like I'm defending
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: to me. I'm the one that said I'm optimistic. I
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: mean and no, not friend, it's it's no, it's it's um,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: it's duced. It's always due. Because dudes, you always say
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: about the draft, but Evan always tell you that you
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: can't do everything through the draft, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: I'm a deuce on this for the most part, though.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: You should do to the draft, though, but just look
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: at the Patriots history. Some of those things will stay done.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: I don't care what you did twenty five. Well, I
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: think it would be two different things, right to say
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: that he that he thinks that you should build through
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: the draft, but also not necessarily love their drafting like
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: it's those are two separate, separate argument confused by a
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: question though, So I mean are you, I mean, are
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: you trying to say that they should have done more
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: in free agency and that that that's what you feel
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: like it's going to be. The downfall is that they
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: weren't more active, I mean a couple weeks ago. Okay,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: so let me put it, let me put you like,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: let me say this way. Then are so well both
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: be on the same page. Okay? Yeah, when we when Bill,
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: I don't want just take the you know whatever, the
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: best pick that's on the board, take it. Don't be
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: reaching for something that's like in the fourth second round
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: when you can get you know somewhere in late why
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: are you just take the pick now? You know what
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: I'm saying. I don't, well will, I don't know if
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: you listen to the first hour of the show. But
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: I think we went through all this and we're all
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: on the same page with you, like I you know,
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: I look, I just I'm actually on the page with
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: with you. Guys. I think you you need to be
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: excited heading into a draft. I mean, especially when you
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: have a lot of picks. Now I know they don't
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: have a lot of high picks, but they need they
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: need to start stacking drafts. And like the day that
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: you just give up on drafting, well, like what why
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: are you even doing it? If you're just going to
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: assume that you're not going to need those guys on
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: those early contracts contributing and the need to draft, Well,
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: they need but there's another part of it. He needs
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: to play them. Yeah, Like you know, Evan, you brought
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: up something early about Zay Flowers. If they go if
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: they draft save Flowers and and you know you won't
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: be able to criticize it. Thanks, that's part of the equation, right,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: draft a guy that everybody thinks fills a need, talented player. Okay,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: everybody's on board. Well, now you have to develop them,
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: and you have to let them play. I think that
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: there's been a reluctance for Bill to let these young
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: guys play and take advantage of that rookie contract. You know,
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: look at you know, some of the examples of guys
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: over the years that you know it's like a year
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: or a year plus into his career before he gets
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: meaningful playing of time. How long did I rant to
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: you Romandri Stevenson fumbled in his first game as a
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: pro and got put on ice for like five weeks,
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Like what good is that? Yeah? Yeah, And I felt
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: a little bit last year like they it felt like
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: they were making some effort to get guys more involved
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: than in anything. I think they've done a better job
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: of it late lately. I mean, Marcus Jones wasn't out
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: of the gate, he was recovering from shoulder surgeries. But
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: I mean, you know, all of a sudden, he's got
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: offensive plays. He's returning pts like couldn't see the field
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: for so you know, Jack Jones got out there, he
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: got to play, you know, more so in the beginning
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: of the year. I think he's been better at it lately.
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: You know, like Barmore played you know, I think he's
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: been better obviously, mac Um. I think he has been
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: better at it lately than maybe he was three or
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: four years ago. But I think you have to be
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: you have to let and you have to develop him,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: I think, as much as I hate giving him credit,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: Ben Voland had a good piece last year late in
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: the year about the draft and saying like, we can
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: criticize the drafting, and that's fair, but you know, the
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: whole wide receiver thing, like they haven't developed these wide
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: receivers either, So it's not just like, well they've taken
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: to Kiel Harry and he can't play. Well, Okay, well
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: maybe that's true from Nikil Harry, but you tell me
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: all of the guys that they've taked, like Chad Jackson
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: couldn't play, Brandon Tate couldn't play, Taylor Price couldn't play,
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: like every guy. But I think the problem is is that, yeah,
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: when it comes to that position, they especially near the
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: top of the draft, and granted they haven't taken that
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: many swings at the top of the draft, so it's
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: a small sample size, but all of those guys were
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: third round and higher. But those guys that you just
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: named were all raw coming into the league as route runners. Right.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: And this is the part that bugs me the most
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: about the way that they evaluate receivers is that they
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: basically draft receivers based off their athletic profile aisles, whatever
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: you did at the combine, and whatever you look like
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: in shorts and a T shirt. We're taking those types
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: of guys. But the problem is is that their system
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: for twenty five years has been predicated on route running, timing,
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: separation at the top of the route, you know, understanding
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: what your assignment is, you know, and where's what the
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: coverage is and adjusting. Those types of things don't show
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: up at the combine, right, So when they take Nikil
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: Harry in the first round over technicians, you know, guys
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: that were good route runners and were sound in those respects,
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: That's where I think the frustration lies is because why
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: did you ever think then nikkil Harry was going to
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: work here? Yeah, it makes me wonder what it was
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: like when they met with him pre draft, and I'm
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: sure they did the thing where they got them up
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: on the white board. I remember we met three weeks
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: ago and we probably okay, spit that back up. You know,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: those kind of things that they tested well. Supposedly that
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: was Chad Jackson strength. Remember, yeah, you know. And there
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: was also a a period of time where this was
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: all blamed on Brady because Brady was too hard. It
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: was too Yeah he's to finished too hard on the
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: young young receivers. You lose his trust. Yeah, he's not gonna.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: Ryan's in New York. What's up? Ryan? Hi? How are
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: you guys doing on the show? I checked in a
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: little late to say so. If you already dresses, I apologize,
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: But I understand there's need for a weapon with this
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: upcoming team. I like you do just as much as
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: I like Jacobe Myers. I know that's debatable, but it
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: is what it is. Um, But did we fully address
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: the tackle position and free agency or are we looking
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: for them at like a round two positions? Are we
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: just going to ignore it and say that our offensive
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: line magically got better. I don't think they can ignore it.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: I mean, I think it's the same play for for fourteen.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: I think I think the first two days, I think
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: they got to take one of those spots. Yeah, they
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: are all around. They it's another position where they have
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: some decent depth now, but they still it still feels
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: like the starters are they don't have a starter. They
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: added depth, yeah, but they don't have a starter. Yeah.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: I do think you hope that Adrian Clem, who Bill
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: basically confirmed, is actually on staff, so I think we
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: can talk about him with that reportedly, Uh, Adrian Clem
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: is I think you hope that he develops some of
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: the younger guys and maybe bring some guys along. I
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: think a guy like Calvin Anderson, who they signed in
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: free agency, has a ton of potential if he's ritt
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: the right coach. I think that he is somebody that
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: has the athletic upside to develop into a starter. So
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: maybe Adrian Clem is able to have some of that
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: Dante seasoning right where you bring one of these guys
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: in and you're able to find somebody. I feel better
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: about him starting that I would. Riley reeve it might
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: be the wrong way to ask this, but do you
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: feel like there's more on Adrian Clem and Bill O'Brien
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: this year or the coach coaches. That's my biggest concern
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: is they they're looking at Bill O'Brien like make magic happen,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: like a messiah, like come in and save us. All right,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: And I just I don't know if you can do that.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: And if I'm Bill O'Brien, I've got to imagine he's
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: in the meeting room right now being like Bill, I'm
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: a good coach. I believe in myself, but this is
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: a middling offense right now on paper, Like, you gotta
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: give me more than this. If you really want me
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: to be able to do my job at the highest
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: level you got, you gotta give me the you know,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: the old groceries, you know, saying like you gotta give
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: me some more than this. I just there's a lot
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: of hoping for Bill O'Brien. Do you think, though, that
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: this team can be better than twenty one, at least
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: like on paper where we stand today, Because I mean, well,
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: what's like you said, who has more pressure on him?
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: On paper? What's a bigger upgrade Juju Robinson and Gasicki
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: over the guys that they replaced, or Bill O'Brien over
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: the guy he replaced. That's coaching by far. So if
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: you're gonna be better, it's almost entirely on the coach's shoulders.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: I don't think I think that Kasiki is better than
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: John hu Smith. I don't think there's a huge argument
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: to be made against that. I think Juju is better
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: than Myers, but as already stated, my argument on that
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: very very minimally, and I think Robinson and Harris are
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: a complete watch. Well. The real the question is if
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: O'Brien was here last year, how much better would they
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: have been last year with that cast? And I think
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: they would have been maybe a game or two better. Yeah,
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: I'm not willing to say games better. They would have
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: been better offense, probably would have been competent. Yeah, I
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: think they win the Minnesota game for example. Maybe it's
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: funny that you picked that one. That's the only game
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: that they played all year that they looked like they
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: had an offer. But I think they would have finished,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: you know what I mean, like why, because they would
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: have been at some point they would have been more
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: con you know why they have a hard time finishing.
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: I really dread going down this road because I know
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: what's going to happen. But they have a hard time
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: finishing because once the other team figures out the scheme,
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: they don't have players that can win. But but that's
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: the that's why they have a hard time coaching. That
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: would have been better that they wouldn't have been able
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: to fit. It's the same problem that they had two
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: years ago. Yeah, that's why they didn't have any come
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: from behind wins. Well, when push comes to shove and
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: the cards there in the in the middle of the
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: table and it's my guy against your guy, they don't
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: have a guy exactly. And every once in a while,
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: even last year, even last year with Patricia, they had
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: a scheme that was mildly successful at times earlier in games,
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: and then the other team says, oh, I wasn't really
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: expecting that, but this is all we have to do
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: to stop that. Now what do you have to fall
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: back on? And this is why dreaded bringing it up, Fred,
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: This is why they're easy to defend. Oh, they say that,
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: but I agree, and I don't think the talent is
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: much different. I think they're going to continue to be
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: easy to defend with the guys they have now than
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: they were last year. I just think the guy calling
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: the shots will be closer to Josh McDaniels two years
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: ago than Matt Patricia last year. They'll be better offensively
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: because of that, And that's the number one frustration. I
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: agreed with William and his call was that if Matt
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: Jon's going to be your quarterback, then you have to
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: surround that quarterback with the talent around him for him
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: to excel. And I am not one hundred percent certain
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: that Bill thinks that that's as important as the rest
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: of the league. Doesn't. I'm not even talking about us,
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: Like I'm not even talking about media. Just look at
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: the other teams around the league and how they approached
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: the offseason in terms of team building, and how they
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: go out and they trade for these receivers or they
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: draft through the receivers in the first round, and they
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: really go out in an attack for weapons to go
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: and get these guys. It is so funny to like this,
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: does he believe in that. There's been a lot of tweets,
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: you know, like listing all the offensive skill guys like
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: this is what they have and it's you know, Stevenson, Robinson,
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: Kasicki Henry with Parker Thornton, and I'm like, yeah, like
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: this is supposed to scare people, like where where is
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: the major upgrade? Like I think people think that, Like
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: I've heard a lot of people talk about the offensive
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: line upgrade. We've been getting a lot and ASPF. Who's
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: up for APF, you guys. Yeah, the aspfw's you know,
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: they want to like pound you know, pound away with
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: Romandre Stevenson behind the improved offensive line? What have they
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: done to improve the offensive line? Adrian Clem? Yeah, again,
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: you're a You're almost entirely reliance on coaching. And by
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: the way, I have no idea if Adrian Clem is good.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: I know Bill O'Brien's good because I saw him do it.
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: I've never seen Adrian Clem succeed as an NFL offensive
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: line coach, so I don't know what he is, but
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: he better be damn good because that's what everybody's banking on,
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: is what Fred just said. I just don't know if
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: the head coach because also the GM, I don't know
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: if he believes in what the Eagles did. The Eagles
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: drafted DeVante Smith in the first round, and they traded
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: a first round pick for AJ Brown to back that
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: they weren't sure right they spent two first they spent
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: three top one hundred picks because they sent a third
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: round pick as well to the Titans for a J Brown.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: On receivers in back to back years, I just think
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: he's not going to do it. He's not going to
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: do that. The compet I think it's very similar. You know,
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: where where Hurts was and where where Mac is now.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: You can make an argument that Hurts was further along. Literally,
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: he was developing, He played a little as a rookie,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: he got his team to a playoffs is in second year.
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: He was ascending, and they still said, you know what,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: I'm not sure about that quarterback. I think we need
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: to get more around him to help him, because if
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: we ask him to do it all, I don't know
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: if he's good enough to do it all. Now, maybe
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: he is. He had an MVP type season. My guess
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: is the guys around him had a lot to do
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: with that. Yeah, I'd also say I think it's worth
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: saying that they had a really good offensive line in
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: place too, you know, like that was set and you've
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: got probably the best part of what's around him. Yeah,
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: but you can also build the line, and I think
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: they can build through the draft. I think they can
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: build the line through the draft, but they have not
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: shown any wherewithal at all with the receiver position to
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: believe that they can build that through the draft. And
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: these teams have overpaid in the veteran market for receivers.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: I think Tua in Miami was also in a really
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: similar spot. They drafted Jalen Waddle in the first round
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: and they traded a boatload of picks for Tyree Hill
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: and back to back years essentially, and this team is
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: just not gonna do that. They're gonna take Taekwon thwart
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: and fiftieth overall and they're gonna basically pick swat for
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: DeVante Parker oh with the Miami Dolphins, and they're gonna
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: say done. They're gonna sign Juju Smith Schuster in free agency.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: They're gonna trade John Y for Mike Kasiki. Essentially done.
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: You know, Okay, We're good. Shuffle in the chairs. Rick
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: and Dallas gets some of these emails web radio atpage
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: dot com based on Tuesday Show. My question is this
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: Bill of the coach is still the best in the business,
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: but Bill the GM is approaching the game with outdated philosophies.
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: Do you think there's any scenario where Bill would stay
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: with the Patriots if mister Krapp brought in a GM
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: to oversee football operations, the draft, contracts, etc. That way,
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: Bill doesn't need to think about the cap or contract
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: negotiations and can simply focus on football. Nope, no, no,
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: I don't no, Nope, I wish let's see. Sam writes
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: in from Halifax, UK. I think what is frustrating with
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: Bill and how he speaks about Mac is that he
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: sounds like he's been saddled with Mac against his will,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: when he's also the GM who picked him and Bills
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: the roster. It'd be different if a separate head coach
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: and GM were at odds over starting quarterback. But if
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: he truly feels the way it seems he does about
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: the position currently, then at this point it's on him
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: to rectify it. I trust Bill if he thinks Mac
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: won't be the guy, but to feel that way and
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: do nothing as a GM doesn't make sense. Well, we
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: don't really know, Yeah, I mean, and I think in
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: probably Bill's own way, he's trying to get the best
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: out of him Mac that he can. I you know,
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: I think we can disagree if he's going about it
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: the right way, but I have to think that's what
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: I mean. You've invested a first round picking the kid,
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: as he said himself, he can play in the league.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: I mean, I think a lot of This refusal to
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: kind of acknowledge him as the starter, et cetera, et cetera,
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: is just it's part of his belief of how I
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: can get this particular player to reach that level. And
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: I don't. I don't know if it'll work. I really don't.
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: I mean, it's I think Max a unique kind of kid.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: I don't. I just don't really have a true sense
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: of Mac Jones. I don't think. I think he's very guarded.
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: In press conferences, we get kind of, you know, a
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: character that you feel like is running everything through a
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: governor of you know, what do they want me to say?
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: And you know we're just speaking generalities and you know,
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: compliment everyone else. And you know, I just don't really
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: have a sense of him, and I'm curious after last year.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: You know, now you get Bill O'Brien in here, who
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: knows what he wants, who's a hard coach to How
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: does it all gel? You know? Is Mac? Oh? Wow?
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: Mac is really motivated and right now he's you know,
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: down the hall and you know, lifting going crazy because
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: you know he wants that acknowledgement from Bill Belchi maybe
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: maybe but maybe not too and maybe he's like I'm
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: so over this. I don't you know, I'm not invested.
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: They're not giving me guys that I feel like I
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: can play. You know, they didn't slide my buddy Slate
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: Bolden yet. You know, like those kind of things, you're
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: not having a good show holding a roster spot open
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: from a concy. I heard Jerry Judy's pretty good. Jordan Appalachian,
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: New York, get it. He was actually Slate Bolden was
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: the guy that made that offense run. Jordan says. I
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: continue listening to the debate on Juju and Myers, and
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: last week everyone wrote in on the stats between the
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: two in man coverage, and Evan claimed Myers was better
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: in that category. To my eyes, Yes, I like the
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: Juju signing initially, and the more I listened, the more
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: I think we should have kept Myers. I'm more curious
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: to know how they each fared against top corners and coverage.
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: Did Juju get the team's top corner more than Myers did.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: I don't recall seeing Sauce Gardner, Tradavious White and other
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: top corners following Myers. Hopefully you're sponsors, especially Paul's in
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: this move moved me back to favoring Juju. I just
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: I think you're overthinking it. I mean, I don't think
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: anyone's gonna gonna sway you with man coverage numbers like
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: they're they're kind of the same player. I think we
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: all kind of agreed Juju is a little bit better
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: in a few areas. Jacoby might be a little bit
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: more better in you know, reliability and contested catches. But
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: there's there's not a huge difference between these two guys.
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: So I mean, that's my feeling on it. But I
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: also would say, if I don't have numbers, I'm not
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: I'm not a big analytics guy. You guys all know that.
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: But wouldn't it stand to reason that Jacobe Myers was
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: the number one option for the Patriots passing game in
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: the last two years and probably saw more of the
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: coverage than Juju Smith Shuster did last year intended in
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: Kansas City, particularly on third day, he did it most.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, do you have to have like
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: is that what we've come like? You can't just watch
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: the game and say that he's the number one option
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: it's and Juju Wasn't you have to something that backs
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: that up with analytics from PF like, Yeah, the man
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: coverage number is the reason why I pushed back on
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: the analytics in this case is because that doesn't pass
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: the eye test. For me, Jacoby Myers is a better
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: route runner and a better separator at the top of
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: the route than Juju is. He's just just is based
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: off of the eye test. So I think that those
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: man coverage numbers are probably more to what Paul is
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: speaking about of the coverage was probably a little bit
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: tighter on Jacoby Myers. Is probably a little bit more
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: focused on Jacobe Myers and Juju was not the number
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: one option in the plan. But I think sometimes people
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: do get lost in the weeds of did he draw
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: the number one corner did he not draw? Because that
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: a lot of that is related to the type of
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: defense the opponent plays where that top corner likes to play.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: Like if you have a guy in the slot who's
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: your number one receiver, then but they Jalen Ramsey right,
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: and Jalen you know, somebody isn't comfortable traveling inside. If
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: you're playing a zone based team to cover three or
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: a quarters based team, then they don't travel, they don't
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: play man. So here, Yes, in New England. When you
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: have a Durell Reeves, Bill Belichick's gonna put him on
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: the best guy and he's gonna travel with them all
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: over the place. But they're not a ton of teams
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: in the league that actually approach it that exact way.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: So don't don't get lost in neither one of those guys. Yeah,
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: neither one of those guys is the type of receiver
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: that were require that. Right now, Why would you go
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: in and say we're going to have Sauce Gardner trail
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: Juju Smith Schuster everywhere he goes only because he's the
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: best day guys. No, But I'm what I'm saying is,
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: you don't have to do that for this team, right right?
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: You do that for no? You just play Amy, You
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: just play sides and we'll see where they line up.
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: I think or will be Brunswick. Here are my takes
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: on Robert and Bill. From Robert's perspective, the comments about
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: Lamar felt more like a humble brag. I know this
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: rapper and good players still want to play for our franchise.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: He's doing that because honestly, his team is becoming irrelevant nationally.
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: They don't even get him mentioned in at seventy to
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: one odds. It's obvious they're expected to go six and
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: eleven for Bill, like the end of the show Tuesday.
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: I agree, we're just holding on to the break the
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: record thing. When Tom left, most people said fifty fifty
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: sheriff credit for the Dynasty. With each passing season, Bill
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: is losing credit to the point eventually no one outside
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: of the local market will give him any credit. Call
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: Phil Jackson, Bill, He'll teach when he'll he'll teach when
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: to move on when you don't have play the best
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: players on your team, I don't know. Phil Jackson was
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: famous for leaving the team when he knew that the
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: stars were gone, like when Jordan was leaving when the
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: ship was sinking. He jumped ships with smart. I just
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: gotta say, Anthony Richardson doing a back handspring, he's a unit. Yeah,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: But I also have to say I'm not oppressed with
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: his throwing against air thing. You know. No, it's like
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: the footwork and a lot of air underballs that I
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: laugh someone on Twitter and it was a national name
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: that I didn't recognize. Yeah, they showed a play of
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: you know for Florida. He like drops back. Everything is
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: perfect like he sits in the pocket, bang back foot
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: footwork is perfect throw. It was an out that was
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: fairly m well covered, but the throw was perfect. And
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: the guy's like, why are there questions about this? Because
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: why is this guy a project? And I'm like, I
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: don't know. Can you show me the the other fifty
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: percent of the throws that he made that he didn't
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: complete so I can pick those apart. I do think
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: that he's a different type of project than I think
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: the word project has. Mary takes on very many meetings.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: I guess he's not a project in the way that
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: he operates from the pocket like he's he's a quarterback.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: Like he understands to read the coverage, he understands to
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: look it off, he understands I manipulation, you know, all
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: that type of stuff. He just has mechanical flaws right now, refinement, right.
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: Did you think josh Alan was a project? Yes? Yes,
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: of course he was. Yeah, so much started like Tony
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: mast Yes, josh Allen and this guy to meet are
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: really really similar. That they both when you watch them
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: on film, it wasn't that you're teaching them how to
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: play the position. It was we're refining their mccam like,
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: no one was wondering, like, are you gonna make Josh Allen, uh,
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: you know, a defensive back. No one's saying that about
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson either. He's a eight quarterback. But the question
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: is is he refined enough with his mechanics, his accuracy
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: and all the things that go into it. I think
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: he's played quarterback the way everybody else does. I just
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: think he's a little erratic. I think these him and
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: him and Hooker are I mean all the Quarterborker just
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: such wild shooting up such I mean I've seen him
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: in the first round right now that everybody has him
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: in the first round. Now, I mean, now we have
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson in the top five, and a lot of
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: these mock drafts are show him right here. Like these
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: guys seem like such wild cards. I mean, I know
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: the quarterbacks will always be wild cards in the NFL
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: because you have to have one and if you like them.
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: But I think you talk about, you know, players that
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: might get overdrafted a little bit that could push players
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: down to the Patriots. I think these are a couple
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: of guys. I mean it seems like Richardson probably in
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: top ten as he was. He's been a top ten
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: Pickford Yeah a while, Sam in North Carolina. Here's my
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: sort of conspiracy theory on what Bill sees in Mac Jones.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: He compares him to Brady. Bill thinks he made Brady
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: into the goat and that he could build a team
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: the same around Mac as he did Brady and coach
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: Mac up to brady Like level. I believe in Mac,
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: but I do think he needs pieces around him just
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: like Brady did. To quote Chazelle, he can't throw the
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: ball and catch it too. I don't kill Bill for
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: free agency too much, though, because I believe if Judy
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: was a free agent then he would be a Patriot
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: by now. I don't don't. I don't believe that at all.
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: If Judy was a free agent he would have hit
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: it out of the park. Well, I don't, and I
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: don't think the Patriots would have been the ones to
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: knock it out of the park. I'm also thinking that
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: I don't think Bill thinks he can make Mac Jones
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: and Brady. It's funny. I'm more agreed with the beginning. Yeah,
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: I do, and I'm glad he brought this up on Tuesday.
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: If you were here, Mike, wasn't I think I made
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: a comment like, you know, I would definitely give Bill
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: some credit for developing Tom Brady. Well, that has turned
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: into on Twitter someone saying that I said that Brady
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: Belichick made Brady, which is not what I said and
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: not what I meant. If so, what I what I
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: was talking about with defending Belichick, which again I find
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: myself in a very odd place this week doing a
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: lot of defending of Bill Belichick, the greatest coach has
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: ever lived. Didn't think he needed defending. But anyway, now,
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: I just don't think that it was all like, no
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: matter where this sixth round one hundred and ninety nine
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: overall pick went, he was going to win. I think
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: Tom Brady would have been successful no matter where he went.
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: I think that he benefited from having the greatest coach
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: ever and that helped him win even more. That's all.
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: I don't give all the credit for Brady to Belichick.
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: That's crazy, that's crazy. But but Bill has you know,
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: even though he stopped short of saying he's the greatest
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: football player ever, he says that Tom Brady is the
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: greatest at his position ever. I don't think he thinks
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: mac Jones. Can ever be that. I just don't well,
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: I mean, but I do think he thinks he was
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: instrumental in it, and I'm not sure that that's accurate.
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: Can you guys think of any examples of him kind
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: of pulling this stuff? Might not I don't want to
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: see mind games, but those kind of things with Brady,
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: like not like holding back on praise, these kind of things,
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: I mean, more of it trying to keep them running hot.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: Only late in his career he didn't do that. Early
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: in his career I think would have. I think it
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: was more with Brady. I think the differences is that
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: it was more behind the scenes than it was I
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: can get with the media. Yeah, and that's pretty famous
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: that he would grill you know, he would tear him
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: apart in film sessions. But early in his career there
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: was a lot of Fred You'll remember these there's no quarterback.
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: I'd rather have late, you know, I think, And it
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: did start, probably with the drafting of Garoppolo. I think
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: he thought Brady had gotten to the point where it
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: was no longer as much of a burning desire for him,
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: you know, like the parking space was no longer a
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: huge issue. Off season, Alice. It's a lot of the stuff.
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: But you know, starting in like fourteen and going through
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: those next few years, I think you did get a
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: little what Evan's talking about. Every once in a while,
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: I need to do this because I gotta. I gotta
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: motivate him, I gotta keep him sharp. I just think
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: it kind of interesting in retrospect comparing to what game
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: was it Paul after in two thousand and one, where
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: it was like Tom's the guy now, you know, like
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: he went with him like you know what. It was
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: like the voter confidence the quarterback and we're going, you know,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: it's very sad day for me. I gotta I got
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: over it, though, and the guy won six titles. I
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: got over it. I came around Kevin and Burlington. Two
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: quick questions. If a team were to make a contract
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: offer to Lamar on the non exclusive tag, are they
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: allowed to negotiate with him or is it just a
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: blind offer? Yeah, you have to negotiate. Yeah you haven't.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: He has to science a matter of fact, that's the
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: only guy you can negot. And did you see his
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: new business venture that? What is that? The whole gym?
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: I think it's the biggest piece of crap him enough,
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: But it's like a lot of metal rods that just
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: you know, listen, I know I'm not a Lamar guy.
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: And that one point that was another point for Deuce.
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: I felt like, I'm like, what are we doing here?
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: We working with Lamar is the same thing as Alvin's career. Uh?
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: And for Baltimore to match the offer, is it accepting
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: the exact terms of that offer or just years and
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: value like hypothetically exact terms? Yes? So could the Patriots?
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: Could the Patriots offer a deal that includes a clause
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: saying if Lamar will to play in poison more more
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: than twice a season, he gets like an extra two
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: hundred million or something to make it unacceptable. You can't
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: do that. You can't. But what you can do is
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: you can structure it. So this is the biggest, biggest
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: cap issue with Lamar Jackson is that the Patriots ideally
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: would structure his contract to have year one be a
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: low cap hit. But if you're Baltimore, why wouldn't you
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: just match it? If all the if all he's going
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: to count against the cap in year one is ten
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: million dollars, then why wouldn't the Ravens just Matt that
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: team friendly structure, get Paul something to drink well, but
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: dying over here. But that that's the really the only,
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: the only difference now in terms of terms and stuff
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: like that, Like it's you're offering him a contract and
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: it's if they match it, they match the exact same
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: contract that you offered him and he has to sign it.
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: So how much of this Lamar stuff though? Do you
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: think because he doesn't have an agent, like I just
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: I can't roll out that is like really gumming up
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: the works. Oh Josh, yeah, two, Josh is no offense.
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: But he kind of looks like me remember where we
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: did We had a we had a coaches thing last
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: year on Zoom and he was like looking at it
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: himself in the mirror and he's like oh he started
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: like yeah yeah yeah, got like self conscious that he
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: only gets the graining weight. Yeah, I think the And
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: I wonder what the structure of that with um with Lamar,
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: Like the Patriots have all that cap space in year two?
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: Do you make it really still? I mean, I know
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: there is like energies and stuff, there are rules that
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: you have to but assuming that you stay within the parameters,
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: if you make it a low cap number in year one,
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: if you made it an astronomical one in year two,
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: it's possible that make it harder for Baltimore. I don't
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: know it's possible. I think that when you whenever you
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: have an RFA, like the number one thing that you
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: want to do is you want to make it so
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: that year one cap hit is really not affordable for
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: the team that has has the option to match it.
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: So if that's the biggest problem is that in order
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: to clear the cap space, the Patriots would also need
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: to clear the cap space, so they would be in
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: the same position as the Ravens. But here's the thing.
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: Do the Ravens want to match it? Do they really
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: want to get rid of this guy? I don't know,
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: that's the question. If they wanted to get rid of them,
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: they would trade them. They'd be actively trying to trade them. Well,
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: they want to get as much as they can for him, right,
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: I think that they are. That's what they be doing,
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: and they're not. I think they're genuinely in a point
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: where has anyone made an offer. They would be making
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: offers to other people if they wanted to trade Them's
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: my point. They'd be calling other teams. Yes, I think
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: to genuinely the problem and I think this is sort
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: of where the agent the no agent thing comes into play,
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: is that the Ravens and Lamar are on to polar
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: opposite sides in terms of what his value is, and
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: the only way that the they can find a middle
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: ground is by is by signing him to the non
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: exclusive tag and hoping that another team sets the standard
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: for them, sets the market for them. Because there's no
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: agent going out there and saying, well, we have X
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: offer from this team and why offer from that team?
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: So there's no there's really a lack of negotiation. So
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: they're saying to themselves, like, what does he even work? Like,
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: we don't even know what he's more likely this year
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: he plays for the Ravens, he plays for another team,
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: or he doesn't play Ravens, doesn't play another team. Order too.
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: But i'd like, you know, I haven't heard anything from
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: Ravens fan like I would just I'm just imagining if
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: the Patriots had Lamar Jackson and that this is what
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: they're going on, people will lose their mind. I mean,
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: I assume that they are. They are, but you know,
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: like I said, at the top of the show. There's
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: already people that are probably gonna hold it against some
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: of the guys that are based in Baltimore. They're going crazy. Well,
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: there was a poll done recently. I don't know who
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: did it. Um it was by social media sentiment in
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: the most negative fan bases. Surprisingly, the Patriots were low.
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: They were like twentieth thing. The Ravens were like, you know, top.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: I thought that was surprising too, until I saw the
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: Jets were one spot above the Patriots. Like, I'm sorry,
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: there's no way the Jets aren't the most negative fans.
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: But maybe they aren't active in social media. I don't know, so,
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: like that's my point. I'm pawning. It's a question. But
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: but Ravens were in the top five. So you know,
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: when you're in the top five, something's going. If you
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: ever everybody knows it Jets for everybody knows somebody from
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: New York, right, if you ever met a Jets fan
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: that's not miserable, Yeah, but maybe they're so miserable that
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: they maybe they're so miserable apathy. Maybe it's apathy and
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: they don't go it ain't apathy, it's anger. Yeah, it's
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: it's It's like the Red Sox. You know, back then
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: people revel in it. It's part of the identity of route.
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: Could you imagine, you know, in two thousand and two
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: the Patriots finishing like twenty fifth in most angry fans
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: in Major League Baseball, That to me is the equivalent
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: with the Jets and dr Right now, Yeah, let's see,
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: Sean writes in in Vancouver, there is a small sign
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: that the Patriots might be open to a little change
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: in philosophy. That change is Mike Kasecki. He's not the
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: best tight end the league. In fact, he's not even
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: a real tight end. That's where things open up. He
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: didn't fit in with the Dolphins scheme last season because
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: he doesn't block. Everyone knows he won't block, and in
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: the past the Patriots haven't used a player at tight
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: end like that. We have no We have to reason
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: that the Patriots brought Kasecki into be more a large
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: slot receiver. He will just run routes in a twelve
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: or two formation zero two. He won't get He won't
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: make the Patriots a contender, but he gives home. But
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: I just need the English explain to me. I don't
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: need the formations, but he gives hope that the that
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: New England will once again have an offense that opponents
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: will have to game plan for. Yeah, I don't. I
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: don't know how much you need the game plan, but
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: I do think that they're probably just going to basically
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: play him out of the slot. I mean, I think
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: we'll use him kind of like to Aaron, he's gonna
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: be I'm just gonna he's gonna be a pass catching
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: tight end. Wow, revolutionary, They've had those. I disagree a
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: lot that he is different. I mean, I understand he
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: only caught like thirty balls last year in Miami because
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: he wasn't a scheme. I get that he's more of
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: a fifty sixty catch guy right in his career. In
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: his last year. You know, last year was an outlier.
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: I'm not saying for the years two years prior is
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: like seven hundred yards. Yeah, I mean he's a good
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: pass good not great, good pass catching tight end. Nothing.
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: I would argue that him and Hunter Henry are basically
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: the same thing. Yeah, I mean, I think that he
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: probably has more juice. I think Henry's a little bit
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: more wiggle at the top of the route. But in
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: terms of like where you're gonna play the wiggle to
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: you not blocking you? Either one of them are great
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: block is a completely unwilling blocker, which separates him from
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: most Well see, I'm not totally convinced about that. Dan
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: and Hawaii Paul suggested that Bill does not draft players
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: from the Big Ten. That seems to be overstated. In
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: recent years, Bill has drafted a number of players from Michigan.
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: Did you listen to the conversation? Are we forgetting that
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: there was a period when the Patriots drafted every defensive
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: back from Rutgers because of great Siano. I don't they
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: were not, but time they were in the Big East,
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: we talked. We talked about Michigan. That's the outlier program.
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: While I am on board with the idea of drafting talent,
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: I still believe Bill can assess talent. I think Bill's
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: problem is he often drafts players based on how he
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: projects players. Bill has shown a propensity for drafting well
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: at running back but not well at corner. In the end,
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: I am a in Bill, We trust guy. Good luck
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: with that. What do you say they're good at what
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: I mean? Running back? Like? I don't think I think
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: that's probably one of the easiest positions to draft, Like,
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: there's not I also think that's the position that he drafts.
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: In my opinion, this is it's all about what you
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: agree with, right, I think he drafts running backs perfectly.
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: Like where he takes them in general is exact, nicles
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: them through, doesn't get attack, give me a third fourth
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: rounder every time, I'll take it, yep. And generally, like
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: you said, running back, it's like a there's no projection, right,
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: there's like, do you know how to pass block on
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: third down? I think that's something significant. But otherwise do
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: you find them? A lot of them and a lot
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: of them have to learn that. But like a lot
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: of the Verenes, you know, the Stevenson's even Ridley, who
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: is a little bit higher. Like that's that's where I
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: want to draft those guys. All right, we're gonna give
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: away a T shirt. Ready, We're gonna give a wait
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: t shirt. First person with the correct answer to web
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: radio at Patriots dot com wins a T shirt. Again,
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: it's web Radio at Patriots dot com. And the question
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: is what song didduce parody before he started hating Brady?
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: What song deduce parody before he started hating Brady. Don't
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: make me sing it first, A correct answer to web
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: radio at Patriots dot com. When's a T shirt, Matt,
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: and you'll win my affection. Blurt it out when you
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: have a winner, or just play the song, Matt, just
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: play the hit, yeah or not? Let's see. Todd in
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: transition writes in um, well, I guess I found a
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: spot where the GM, the coach, and the owner agreed
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: Mac Jones is not it. While mister Craft said nice
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: things about Mac, he then said something along the lines
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: that we should get Lamar if that is the solution.
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: He did not say that. He did not say that honestly.
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: Which if you think that there is something left to
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: explore with Mac, or are you in agreement that it's
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: time to move on. I don't see any quarterbacks in
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: the draft that the Patriots would be able to target
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: another year of rebuilding way for the chance to get
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: a quarterback. You can't. I mean, that's unfortunately. I think
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: you're married doing for this year. I mean, if things
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: could go sidew with you guys on that you know
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: you spent a first round on him. He didn't give
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: him an opportunity last year to be successful. I mean,
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: you know, if even Paul agrees that you got to
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: have to give him another chance. But that being said,
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: I don't think that he's got the longest leash in
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: the world. Part of it is where you are picking.
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: The last part of that email is what like I
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: would weigh all the options, and I don't think there's
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: a better option. If I think there's a better option
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: than just won't pay for it, well, who's the winner?
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: Doesn't say where he's from, but Nathan, Nathan and the
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: correct answer, Matt, I won't forget you by Poison. That's
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: a great song. Yeah, and all time it's all right, sorry,
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: all right, sorry I didn't get I missed Tuesday's metal.
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: That's my niche right now is music hate Evan and
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: I could disagree because I think your your alternative was
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: Rogers lamar oh lamar. Okay, that's the um. I just
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: think that that's messy. That doesn't have to like they
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: could do everything you want them to do and still
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: not get there. But I disagree with the emailer that
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: if it's pretty clear that Bill is at least on
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: the fence about mac Jones at this point, and we're
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: we're kind of wasting time, that especially his time, Bill,
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: because he ain't getting any younger. But if if they
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: would take if if they're at fourteen, let's say that
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: they were nine, then I would sit there and say,
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: you're not You're on the fence. Like Evan just said,
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: you got to do something to move up and get
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: stroud or or young. Yeah, because you don't have time
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: for a project with like Levis or you know that
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: the one you really don't like, really don't like Will Dungares. No,
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: I like him, No, I like him more than you.
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: Then Levis is what we'll get to that. Silburton, New York.
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: Next week we'll start our draft podcasts. Uh next week, Hey,
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: then we'll start. We'll start off with quarterbacks. Okay, next week, great, Silburton,
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: New York says getting Lamar should be a no brainer.
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: Everyone is up in arms about the draft picks. Trade them.
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: Bill has three number one picks, cold strange Mac Jones
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: to kill Harry. I'm trading those players for Lamar. Get Lamar,
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: pay him what he wants, and be relevant. Okay, Okay,
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: so now what happens. If Baltimore decides the match, then
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: then well then now you're stuck with Mac Jones who
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: knows that you will. Well, this is my point. Like,
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: I think that's a better alternative. We had a nice,
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: nice show on Tuesday without you dues, you know, throwing
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: cold water on our excitement for a guy who actually
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: has won an MVP in this league. Um, but I
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: just think it's it's messy. It's it's not as simple
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: as snap your fingers, bite the bullet and do it.
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: Now you have to hope the other team doesn't match.
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: And like I said, I think if they wanted to
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: trade him to you, I think they'd be calling you.
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: But so I if the number one reason why you
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: don't do it is because you're gonna create a mess
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: if you don't get him, then I say do it,
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: because you've already created him. I'm not saying it, don't
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: do it. I'm saying just because you do it doesn't
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: mean you're gonna get it. No. I know you may
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: not get it, and that makes things that are bad worse.
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: But I don't worry about you know, like if a
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: guy can eat the player we camp, That's what I mean.
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: So like I'm not you know, like if you really
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: you sit down with Mac to listen, you're not Lamar Jackson. Plus,
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna judge all that we know that we didn't
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: get him. You're a quarterback. I'm gonna judge of Belichick.
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: I'm gonna assume if they made an offer sheet for
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson clearly wanting to move on for Mac and
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: sign Lamar and it fell through, I'm completely convinced, based
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: on the previous twenty three years, that then Mac Jones
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: would turn out to be an all problem, right, because
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: that's what happens with Bill, Like, yeah, he tries to
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: do something different, it doesn't work. He has to fall
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: back on this plan and it ends up being the
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: better plan, and everybody tells him what a brilliant And
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: it's what we were thinking. Did you see how we motivated? Man?
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: That's that's when we're gonna get it. This whole like
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: a tough love act works, is that's going to a
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: genius move by Bill has never made him as well,
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: well what if it does? If it works, it's because
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: Mac Jones actually good at football not and Bill knew
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: that and he had to get the best out of him.
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: You see, you see they yeah, you see what I
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: deal with? Uh, Mike writes in and I'm not sure
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: where he's getting this, but he says, I believe grow
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: made the picks last year, minus the strange pick. I think,
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: minus the biggest you just don't get the first round.
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: I think you will see best the opposite of my
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: Bill can do no run, Bill could do no right.
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: And I think you will see Bill picks in this
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: year's draft. In other words, he's trading down. I expect
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: the defensive end or tight end pick late first or
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: second round. Corners and tackles will grab later as usual.
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: I don't like it, but I see it coming. I
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: don't like it either. I just what Evan's been saying, like,
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: you need guys that can play at premium positions, and
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: you don't get those guys by trading down. And to
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: tie it into Paul's point, they aren't the same guy.
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: So you trade down to twenty, you might think that, oh,
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: I'm getting the same guy. But I just I had
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: a tough time unless it's unless it's a wow, that's
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: a slam dunk at twenty. Once you get there and
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: that makes sense and you know you're at a different
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: time now, you need you need really good players. That's
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: what lax on this team, and I'm with you now, yeah,
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: Like I feel like this draft, we always go back
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: to the van the Dante High Tower, Chandler Jones, perfect Weekend, right,
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: Like that's what we all but that type of drafty
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: they trade it up, right, I think twice twice. Like
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: that's the type of draft that I feel like they need.
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: Now you got eleven picks, right, And that's a great
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: thing about him being here for so long and being
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: this the guy that's making all the decisions. There's evidence
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: of them doing pretty much everything right. So you can say, oh,
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: we wanted to trade up, and they did it in
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: two thousand and twelves, so they might do it again,
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: Like we can we can do that, you know whole
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: song I think, and I did this probably like two
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: years ago. Like he's made as many trades up as
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: he has down. The difference is more often than not
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: high in the draft down. Yeah, Like that's the outliers,
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: the Chandler Jones, Dante Hi Tower or even he went
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: down with Mayo when yeah, yeah, el from Wisconsin. A
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: few quick hits, he says. First, he says, Evans a
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: great addition. Don't always agree, but the passion's great. One
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: I think this is the team we're looking at it.
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: I'd be shocked if there are any game changing additions
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: even through the draft. Two. If we went back to
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: twenty nineteen and tried to see the worst case scenario
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: for post Brady, what would you say, I think we're
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: pretty darn close to it. Well, I mean, come on,
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: do you I mean, do you know what a two
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: win season looks like. I mean, like I would say, like,
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: instead of Mac Jones, you drafted Zach Wilson. Yeah, that
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: would be worst, like the worst nightmare. But even with him,
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: because you wouldn't be a playoff team, you would have won,
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: you wouldn't have made the playoffs. I probably agree with
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: you there, but really, at the end of the day,
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: I don't. I don't see a monumental difference, you know
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: what I mean? Like I did feel like if Zach Wilson,
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: this is a great show for me. I'm like, you
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: think Zach will someone would be as good as Mac Maybe,
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know, I mean as good as
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: I could definitely make the argument that Zach Wilson would
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: be better if he was on the Patriots and he
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: was getting Zach Wilson was not good in college. Zach
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: Wilson has ever been good. I thought I thought he
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: was a tad overrated, but them and the skills are undeniable.
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: But the skills and clearly he's a T shirt. Clearly
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: he is uh not like at the aptitude that you
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: need because he makes the same And here's a conspiracy
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: theory from l He says Bill is pissed that he
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: was forced to move on from Matt Patricia and he
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: doesn't get the players to make the offense better, and
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: then the offense still struggles, and he can sit back
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: and say, hey, it wasn't Matt's fault. That's that's that's
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: really cutting off your nose despite your face type of well,
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: and then he went next level, grad school level with
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna make three changes. They're really lateral moves. But
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: everybody's going to say, how much better the offenses? Like
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: he had a this guy and that guy and this guy, right,
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: so they can't say it wasn't trying for me, right
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: that The one thing that I would not criticize at
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: all is really the entirety or free agency, because I
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: just don't think this was a great free agent class.
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: Well that's what I was gonna bring up to William
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: because that's what I thought he was getting at with.
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: Like when he was coming at me, it was like, well,
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: like who did you want them to sign that? Like?
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: Are you like like Orlando Brown was like what? The
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: free agency is not the part that bothers me. The
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: part that bothers me is that we hear these reports
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: about Hopkins and Judy and Hopkins. I'm not like totally
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: sold on either, but you hear all these reports about
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: these guys and the response always is, well, the Patriots
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: are interested, but not at that price. And it frustrates
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: me too. At this point in time, you're not interested.
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: I always right, that's the price. You gotta pay the price.
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: A little bit like if Miami paid sent six draft
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: picks to Kansas City for Tyree Hill. Do you think
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: the Dolphins have any regrets whatsoever from making that trade? Well,
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: not not now, Evan, but you know when they're in
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: cap hell like in two years watched right, Yeah, all right,
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: that's gonna be it for this edition of Patriots and
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: Filtered Catch twenty two is oh yeah, Pete and Ottawa
