Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart
- 0:07Speaker 1: podcasts coming up on NHL and Scripted, SEML File and
- 0:24Speaker 1: sixty the Best Films of twenty twenty five, plus recapping.
- 0:28Speaker 2: The Critics' Choice Awards.
- 0:29Speaker 1: A special guest from the Philadelphia Flowers and also an Olympian,
- 0:32Speaker 1: Rodrigo Obbols is going to join us, and a big
- 0:35Speaker 1: week for Austin Matthews as the Jets are grounded JD.
- 0:39Speaker 1: We kick it off though with JD doing South Beach
- 0:42Speaker 1: Annual Winter Classic the New York Rangers. Unbelievable in outdoor
- 0:45Speaker 1: games six and zero. You were there, a true Miami affair,
- 0:49Speaker 1: a tribute to Mimivice, the pregame affair, the Panthers players
- 0:53Speaker 1: rolling up the game of prey to sports cars and
- 0:55Speaker 1: look like you had a blast.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Uh yeah.
- 0:57Speaker 3: I got worked like an absolute mule by the NHL
- 1:01Speaker 3: and the league as I as I do consistently for
- 1:07Speaker 3: It was a great event though, Man, what a show.
- 1:09Speaker 3: They spared no expense. I got to call the game
- 1:12Speaker 3: for NHL International, which is really cool. We did that
- 1:15Speaker 3: kind of practice stream on NHL YouTube, which is amazing.
- 1:18Speaker 3: And then you know, we get to the day of
- 1:21Speaker 3: the game and I show up to the rink and
- 1:22Speaker 3: they said, hey, you're going to kind of help with
- 1:24Speaker 3: the arrivals and you're going to do arrival interviews. And
- 1:26Speaker 3: I said, yeah, I've be sure, no problem, you know,
- 1:28Speaker 3: happy to help and I'll grab some guys. And they're saying, hey,
- 1:31Speaker 3: the Florida Panthers is going to be pretty cool. They're
- 1:33Speaker 3: coming in you know, ferraris or whatever. So it's like
- 1:37Speaker 3: you're gonna have to They're announcing car by car. So
- 1:41Speaker 3: we get closer to the game and I get to
- 1:43Speaker 3: the rink and I do my couple of hits for
- 1:45Speaker 3: the NHL Network and the guy, the liaison guy that's
- 1:47Speaker 3: grabbing me to bring me to the he's bringing me
- 1:50Speaker 3: to the arrivals. He goes, hey, he goes, are you
- 1:53Speaker 3: comfortable MCing? And I said, oh, I said what there.
- 1:57Speaker 3: He goes yeah, he goes, you know, we don't have
- 2:00Speaker 3: a host. The host isn't here. You're gonna have to
- 2:03Speaker 3: m C. And I'm like at this point too, I'm like,
- 2:07Speaker 3: wait a minute, no, this can't be true. I said, okay,
- 2:13Speaker 3: So I go I'm like I walk outside and they're
- 2:16Speaker 3: like it's like a whirl when I get outside there like, hey,
- 2:18Speaker 3: here's the names you're gonna announce, and you get a
- 2:20Speaker 3: weight on que you gotta pump up the crowd, brutal
- 2:23Speaker 3: and I'm like, okay.
- 2:26Speaker 2: No extra money for this, just a random Oh no.
- 2:29Speaker 3: You best believe on the expense report this month there
- 2:32Speaker 3: was an extra day's pay for that, because that is
- 2:36Speaker 3: not in my contract.
- 2:37Speaker 4: I had no idea I was doing that. And then I'm.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Sitting there the Florida Panthers are late by like thirty minutes,
- 2:43Speaker 3: and here's Jason Emers, former NHL player, and all my
- 2:46Speaker 3: humbleness and everything, and I'm grinted. Teeth played in the Olympics,
- 2:51Speaker 3: so I let's go Panthers.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Pumping the crowd up.
- 2:57Speaker 2: It was just reduced to being a huckster. That's what
- 2:59Speaker 2: you want.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Oh it was great. I mean listen.
- 3:01Speaker 3: It was on top of that, I had to call
- 3:04Speaker 3: all international too after, so I had to do color.
- 3:07Speaker 3: So I'm like losing my voice out there. So I'm
- 3:09Speaker 3: literally losing my voice as I'm screaming for NHL for
- 3:15Speaker 3: the Florida Panthers to be frickin thirty four minutes late
- 3:20Speaker 3: in all their glory but it was by all accounts,
- 3:24Speaker 3: it was an amazing entrance, probably one of the better ones.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Matthew could chuck and bark off in the first car,
- 3:30Speaker 3: just like incredible atmosphere.
- 3:33Speaker 4: There were so many fans.
- 3:34Speaker 3: They're Rangers fans and Panthers fans and sorry to go
- 3:38Speaker 3: along because it's a funny story.
- 3:39Speaker 4: So they go, hey, you're gonna.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Announce each car one by one, and he goes, you're
- 3:44Speaker 3: gonna announce you know, here's the list, and I said, just,
- 3:47Speaker 3: you know, make sure it goes quick because I also
- 3:50Speaker 3: have to grab guys for an interview. And I know
- 3:54Speaker 3: these NHL players they're gonna walk up here and they're
- 3:56Speaker 3: just gonna get out of the car and leave. They're
- 3:58Speaker 3: not gonna wait for twenty minutes. They go, no, no, they'll wait.
- 4:00Speaker 4: They'll wait. We'll make them wait, We'll make them wait. Sure, okay,
- 4:03Speaker 4: make sure.
- 4:04Speaker 3: So I like a guy relaying the names to me,
- 4:06Speaker 3: and of course, you know in like car six is
- 4:09Speaker 3: Sergey Bbrovsky and and Sam Bennett and I'm reading the
- 4:13Speaker 3: car too, and I see Serge Lebrovski just mow past me,
- 4:16Speaker 3: and I'm like, well, this is just a fucking mess.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Now, so I'm just trying to keep up. I'm like, yeah,
- 4:20Speaker 4: keep yelling.
- 4:21Speaker 3: The names, and I'm yelling names of guys that are
- 4:23Speaker 3: like already in the building.
- 4:24Speaker 5: Like I'm just like in.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Car number five, right s Morovsky looking I was wearing
- 4:31Speaker 3: a suit looking like Richard Dawson.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Yes, it was, it was.
- 4:35Speaker 5: It was.
- 4:36Speaker 3: It was a sight to be to behold. And it
- 4:38Speaker 3: was a very cool event. And uh, you know, I think,
- 4:42Speaker 3: I know it got a lot of flak for like
- 4:44Speaker 3: the Moniker Winter Classic and it being you know, it
- 4:47Speaker 3: being in South Florida.
- 4:48Speaker 4: But it was really cool, man.
- 4:50Speaker 3: And when they opened up the they open up the
- 4:52Speaker 3: roof and the windows. I mean, it was what an
- 4:54Speaker 3: amazing venue. It was cool, it wasn't warm, it was
- 4:57Speaker 3: really nice in the building. And yeah, the fans were
- 5:01Speaker 3: it was. It was well done and I think it's
- 5:03Speaker 3: something that's going to be I see how they do Tampa.
- 5:06Speaker 3: But for that, that was like perfectly executed.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I was about to say Tampa hosting an outdoor game
- 5:11Speaker 1: February first, So I'm with you, that's a little bit
- 5:13Speaker 1: more concerning. This was smart because the fact that it's
- 5:15Speaker 1: obviously well done with the refrigeration and keeping the roof.
- 5:19Speaker 2: You know, as you said, it was a cool atmosphere, Tampa.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I don't know how that's gonna work, but as you said,
- 5:24Speaker 1: in terms of like execution, NHL has been a plus
- 5:27Speaker 1: with this, and you get casual fans right that they're
- 5:29Speaker 1: not really into hot but they love watching the Winter Classic.
- 5:31Speaker 2: It's it's a huge hit.
- 5:32Speaker 3: It's great and the MC was pretty darn good as well.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Outside and you're hearing, oh, is that Jason Emers, Yes
- 5:41Speaker 3: it is, folks.
- 5:42Speaker 4: It's me, like you said, like a.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Richard Dawson family feud type. I love it.
- 5:46Speaker 1: You were just channeling that kind of style, just like
- 5:48Speaker 1: everybody fired up like a raw raw guy.
- 5:51Speaker 5: Uh.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Speaking of getting fired up, rosters officially in for the
- 5:53Speaker 1: Winter Olympics taking off February sixth.
- 5:56Speaker 2: A lot to go over here, So let's do Canada first.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Tom Wilson, Nick Suzuki, bohorvat In, Sam Bennett, Mark Scheifeley
- 6:03Speaker 1: Connor out thoughts on that first five. But Dar's a
- 6:07Speaker 1: surprise to me because I just thought put him on
- 6:09Speaker 1: the team and then if he's hurt and can't play,
- 6:11Speaker 1: no problem, just replace him.
- 6:12Speaker 2: But not even named the team.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Your thoughts.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Yeah, they they gave him the injury replacement nod. I
- 6:19Speaker 3: think they kind of I don't know if they ever
- 6:21Speaker 3: never wanted him on the team, and this injury kind
- 6:24Speaker 3: of provided a little bit of a shelter for them
- 6:26Speaker 3: to say, hey, no we're not taking him. It was
- 6:28Speaker 3: you know, and then they kind of double down saying
- 6:31Speaker 3: like the injury wasn't a part of it, and I'm like.
- 6:34Speaker 4: You just admit it, Yes it was. It's like it's fine.
- 6:36Speaker 3: You kind of didn't want him and you're like, hey,
- 6:39Speaker 3: this is you know, do I think leaving him off
- 6:42Speaker 3: was a good idea. I think he had earned, you know,
- 6:46Speaker 3: to at least be potentially seriously considered for an extra.
- 6:50Speaker 3: But you know, they have such a good team and
- 6:53Speaker 3: they have so many options in Canada, it's just going
- 6:55Speaker 3: to come down to the fit need for John Cooper
- 6:59Speaker 3: and that coaching staff. You know, I for sure they're
- 7:02Speaker 3: very much big on and team can undefined roles, not
- 7:05Speaker 3: just taking the best possible offensive players. They want to
- 7:09Speaker 3: find roles up and down the lineup. So, you know,
- 7:11Speaker 3: the biggest one for me for Canada was probably on
- 7:14Speaker 3: the back end. I think I understand the back end
- 7:17Speaker 3: the trust you you know, as a defenseman, you want
- 7:20Speaker 3: guys you're comfortable with, comfortable playing with, you know. But
- 7:24Speaker 3: there's a lot of guys you know that we're having
- 7:27Speaker 3: good campaigns. Jacob Chickrian didn't even get considered.
- 7:29Speaker 2: You've been big on Chickrin.
- 7:31Speaker 3: I was big and I said we'd riot. So I'm
- 7:34Speaker 3: still setting up that date to riot.
- 7:36Speaker 2: You said that on an NHL network. I remember we
- 7:38Speaker 2: all yeah, but.
- 7:38Speaker 3: We're still setting up that date. I got to get
- 7:40Speaker 3: a few things put together for that. But uh, you know,
- 7:42Speaker 3: a lot of moving parts when you want to riot.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Uh you know people what whatnot in flights and you
- 7:48Speaker 3: know schedules. But sure, uh, you know, I think you
- 7:51Speaker 3: know a lot of people, said Matthew Shaffer. But I
- 7:53Speaker 3: think you know Matthew Shaeffer's first year. I think they're
- 7:56Speaker 3: cognizant Team Canada of like how much hockey they want
- 7:59Speaker 3: him to play, because this is like the most hockey
- 8:01Speaker 3: he's played ever, and it's like he's adding the Olympics
- 8:05Speaker 3: on top of that. I think would be a disservice
- 8:07Speaker 3: to him and would just you know, would just kill him.
- 8:09Speaker 4: He's a young kid, so I think he's going to be.
- 8:11Speaker 3: In every Olympics and World Championships if he's not in
- 8:15Speaker 3: the playoffs moving forward, But this was I think this
- 8:18Speaker 3: was a good decision. Who knows, you know, we're still
- 8:21Speaker 3: far away. There's still a month left, and in a month,
- 8:24Speaker 3: there's a lot of injuries, and you could see with
- 8:27Speaker 3: this condemnsed schedule and with the way the injuries have
- 8:29Speaker 3: been mounting on a lot of teams. You know, Devon
- 8:31Speaker 3: Taves just went down in Colorado. You could see him
- 8:34Speaker 3: slide in potentially to this spot if there's more than
- 8:37Speaker 3: one or two injuries.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Canada very center heavy. They added four forward to weren't
- 8:42Speaker 2: at four nations.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Three of those guys are centers celebrating Suzuki and horror
- 8:46Speaker 1: fat As far as the Americans are concerned, you mentioned
- 8:48Speaker 1: roster construction of Canada's very cognitive, having guys playing their
- 8:52Speaker 1: correct roles.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Billy Garrett was clear about that. I think it's a mistake.
- 8:55Speaker 1: He's not gonna have Jason robertson there. Cole Kawfield because,
- 8:58Speaker 1: as he said, no, we like having structure like guys.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I was certain to find rules.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Adam Fox, Lane Hudson are out your thoughts of the Americans,
- 9:05Speaker 1: particularly Robertson RoboCop not making the list.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Well, you have Robertson to Brincat in Caufield. You got
- 9:12Speaker 3: to take one, like, you got to take one of
- 9:14Speaker 3: those guys because you need game breakers. And what happened
- 9:18Speaker 3: to I know, four nations is only four teams, and
- 9:21Speaker 3: but the US lost too in a one goal game essentially,
- 9:26Speaker 3: so they lost in a one goal game. They needed
- 9:29Speaker 3: that moment where it doesn't matter if Cole Coffield or
- 9:32Speaker 3: Jason Robertson are having a bad game. They find the
- 9:34Speaker 3: back of the net and they find a way. And
- 9:36Speaker 3: I find it very shocking that you would leave off,
- 9:39Speaker 3: you know, the top US board goal scorer right now
- 9:42Speaker 3: at the moment, and Jason Robertson and the points leader,
- 9:45Speaker 3: and it's Donning. You know, his the way he is
- 9:48Speaker 3: on the power play, the way he can you know,
- 9:51Speaker 3: he scores these weird goals where you're like, how did
- 9:53Speaker 3: this go in? But he's just got a nose for
- 9:54Speaker 3: the net. And you know, I thought he was having
- 9:57Speaker 3: a great year. So I'm very surprised. I know they
- 10:00Speaker 3: seem to be really leaning on his playoffs and how
- 10:03Speaker 3: kind of at times he you know, can disappear in
- 10:06Speaker 3: the playoffs or he's not you know, as as dominant
- 10:10Speaker 3: when the you know, not as dominant when kind of
- 10:14Speaker 3: the stakes are elevated. But I just think it's a
- 10:16Speaker 3: big mistake, and I think this US team is probably
- 10:20Speaker 3: the most pressure on them moving forward because if they
- 10:23Speaker 3: don't win, everybody's looking to looking at Billy Garrin for
- 10:27Speaker 3: Robertson or Cowfielder to Brincats. So to me, I think
- 10:30Speaker 3: their decor is one of the most stout in UH
- 10:34Speaker 3: in this tournament. I know the Adams quite huge Jakeson,
- 10:37Speaker 3: but I think Seth Jones earned it over him, And
- 10:40Speaker 3: after that, I think those other five is pretty set,
- 10:43Speaker 3: you know, and I don't think after you know, it
- 10:45Speaker 3: was either Fox or Jones and you're not bringing one
- 10:47Speaker 3: of them as an extra. So Jones gets it, and
- 10:49Speaker 3: then he gets injured in Florida after Matthew could Chuck
- 10:52Speaker 3: drapes the Olympic the you know, the US flag during
- 10:56Speaker 3: the during the anthem when they announced the team USA.
- 11:00Speaker 3: He drapes the US flag on his shoulders with Adam
- 11:03Speaker 3: Fox and the Bill, and then Jones proceeds to get
- 11:06Speaker 3: injured in the game, So you know, call that karma
- 11:09Speaker 3: or whatever it is. But I think he hopefully's okay,
- 11:12Speaker 3: and because he's really earned it. Seth Jones the way
- 11:14Speaker 3: he's played, and I love their decore, I like their goaltending,
- 11:17Speaker 3: and it's just those three guys up front. I think
- 11:20Speaker 3: they made a mistake and not bringing one of them.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Definitely built from the back end.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Jones in front of NHL and scripted our friend Tony
- 11:25Speaker 1: Luff and the NHL Network saying with the guards of
- 11:27Speaker 1: Jason Robertson, he said, I love the Herb Brooks line
- 11:29Speaker 1: form miracle, not looking for the best players, looking for
- 11:32Speaker 1: the right ones. Jason Robertson is both. We'll see it ultimately.
- 11:36Speaker 1: If that ends up harming with the.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Guards of Bill g A, then I want to ask
- 11:40Speaker 3: you a question. Please, you know reason five thousand of
- 11:43Speaker 3: why we need a video element for the show. Like
- 11:47Speaker 3: Tal Pinchewsky has been coughing up along since we started
- 11:51Speaker 3: the show, and if people can see this right now,
- 11:54Speaker 3: I feel bad because he needs a lozenge or something.
- 11:56Speaker 4: And Tal, what's going on right now?
- 11:58Speaker 2: Because I just noticed a squinting. I didn't see the coughing.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Oh he's been he's been hacking a lung up there.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Tell what's going on? It's got whooping cough.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Oh, whooping coughs, brutal geez.
- 12:14Speaker 4: I know, I know it's not it's just yeah, you
- 12:18Speaker 4: could never use that mic again.
- 12:20Speaker 1: But it does raise the larger issue with JD is
- 12:22Speaker 1: saying a little hon your meeting right now? Can we
- 12:24Speaker 1: get a video element? People have been saying a podcast
- 12:26Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six. How do you guys don't have
- 12:28Speaker 1: a video element? How are you not on YouTube? I
- 12:30Speaker 1: can just watch your show.
- 12:32Speaker 3: We might as well be chiseling on rock and sending
- 12:36Speaker 3: it out to people.
- 12:39Speaker 2: We're old school here. Tell put it in some of
- 12:42Speaker 2: the other teams.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I don't care that much, but if you want to
- 12:43Speaker 1: just give it a little cursory thought here j D
- 12:45Speaker 1: Sweden highlighted by a pair of wild goalies Yes for
- 12:48Speaker 1: Volstad and Phil Gushism, as well as the absence of
- 12:51Speaker 1: Mattias Echo, Michael Beckland and our guy William Eckland Finland
- 12:55Speaker 1: what we expected, Oliver Captain making the cut finish need defense.
- 12:59Speaker 1: That's where Jason Deverz needs to be finished and just
- 13:01Speaker 1: go listen. You guys don't even have enough defenseman.
- 13:03Speaker 2: I can do it. I'll be six defense, no problem.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Well they always just well it's different than four nations
- 13:08Speaker 3: because they don't have to take NHL guys. There's a
- 13:10Speaker 3: couple guys, you know, Miko Lettnin's in there. I think
- 13:13Speaker 3: there's one or two guys that are playing in the
- 13:15Speaker 3: Finnish league that are brought there. But I mean, listen,
- 13:17Speaker 3: there's some there's some teams. You know, Team Sweden's my
- 13:20Speaker 3: dark course to win it. Uh, I think they're stacked.
- 13:23Speaker 3: I didn't love the Willy Eckland snub. I think we
- 13:26Speaker 3: had him on the show fan of the show. Yeah,
- 13:29Speaker 3: I was a little shocked at that. So that's my
- 13:32Speaker 3: Team Sweden number one. The best part of that, you know,
- 13:36Speaker 3: offer sheet by the Saint Louis Blues, is that Philip
- 13:38Speaker 3: Robert gets the nod ahead of Mattias at home for
- 13:42Speaker 3: the Olympics, and just more salt in the wounds that
- 13:45Speaker 3: they kind of gave up.
- 13:46Speaker 4: On him for eck home.
- 13:47Speaker 3: And you know, Broberg's just having a good year, even
- 13:49Speaker 3: though you know, Saint Louis is still kind of the hunt.
- 13:51Speaker 3: But yeah, I'm surprised with Willy Eckland. I thought he
- 13:54Speaker 3: did enough to earn it. But this Swedish team is
- 13:57Speaker 3: they're sneaky man. They go and win World Juniors and
- 14:00Speaker 3: then now can go back to back and maybe do
- 14:02Speaker 3: the World Championsschampionship's that Jesus Christmas World Championships as well,
- 14:08Speaker 3: and do the triple crown.
- 14:09Speaker 2: I like to call it nice. Well, let's tako little
- 14:12Speaker 2: World Juniors Junior mafia.
- 14:13Speaker 1: As Sweden beats the Checks four to two in Minnesota
- 14:16Speaker 1: win their first World Junior Hockey Championships ince twenty twelve.
- 14:20Speaker 1: That's a back when Meeka has been a jadd scored
- 14:21Speaker 1: the ot winer for the Swedes. You just saw Mika
- 14:23Speaker 1: putting on a show there at the Winter Classic. Canada
- 14:25Speaker 1: does get bronze six to three win over the Finns,
- 14:28Speaker 1: but it was disappointing obviously for Canada. McKenna had a
- 14:31Speaker 1: strong tournament I will say fourteen point seven games, but
- 14:34Speaker 1: ultimately I was texting our friend A J. Raddick was
- 14:36Speaker 1: calling the games for USA and when USA lost to
- 14:39Speaker 1: fell and he said the door is open for Canada.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I'm like, let's go, he said, but Checkie is going
- 14:42Speaker 1: to be tough. Ultimately, Canada falls in the semis. Sweden
- 14:45Speaker 1: ends up winning it all I care about as long
- 14:47Speaker 1: as Canada wins on home soil next year's Red Deer,
- 14:50Speaker 1: it's gonna be setout. It's like it's been three years
- 14:52Speaker 1: and we have a won, right USA unable to three
- 14:54Speaker 1: people the first time ever. The Americans don't win on
- 14:56Speaker 1: home soil for the first time, as long as Canada
- 14:59Speaker 1: wins and Red Deer will be happy. But I think
- 15:00Speaker 1: it is good news JD for the sport overall, when
- 15:03Speaker 1: in the past it was always Canada winning. Now it's legit,
- 15:06Speaker 1: like now other teams are true contenders. You will see upsets,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and I think certainly frustrating for Americans, not only losing
- 15:12Speaker 1: on home soil, but not great crowds in Minnesota.
- 15:14Speaker 2: They love their.
- 15:15Speaker 1: College hockey, they love their high school hockey, but disappointing
- 15:18Speaker 1: attendants for the World Juniors in Minneapolis, Saint Paul.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Yeah, this is supposed to be the state of hockey, right.
- 15:24Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 15:24Speaker 4: What happened? MANI? Where were you? We're Warriors coming out?
- 15:28Speaker 3: You didn't want to watch the Latviaver's Denmark, particularly your
- 15:31Speaker 3: fancies in minus sixty degree weather?
- 15:33Speaker 2: Whatelse?
- 15:34Speaker 3: Was were you doing ice fishing? Come on, get out there,
- 15:38Speaker 3: you know the US. You know, people were really harping
- 15:40Speaker 3: on that, and I'll touch on that quick is you know,
- 15:43Speaker 3: I just think that the World Juniors might not do
- 15:45Speaker 3: it for the Americans, especially in Minnesota. But I don't
- 15:49Speaker 3: know why they wouldn't give it. You know, you put
- 15:51Speaker 3: the Winter Classic in Florida. I tweeted about this. Why
- 15:53Speaker 3: not put the World Juniors the next time it's in
- 15:55Speaker 3: the US in Florida. Put it Put it in a
- 15:58Speaker 3: tourist area, you know, because during the holidays, a lot
- 16:00Speaker 3: of people are traveling, you know, and I think a
- 16:02Speaker 3: lot of people are getting out of this and the
- 16:04Speaker 3: win and everybody. They're trying to go, Hey, let's you know,
- 16:07Speaker 3: in the US, let's put it close to north and
- 16:09Speaker 3: we're gonna get the Canadians that are gonna come down. No,
- 16:11Speaker 3: the Canadians are gonna go to Florida. They're gonna go
- 16:14Speaker 3: to Disney World or whatever they're gonna do. So I
- 16:16Speaker 3: think why not attempt maybe putting it in South Florida
- 16:20Speaker 3: or Tampa Bay close to Disney World. You know, you
- 16:24Speaker 3: get some of the Europeans. It's a closer travel day
- 16:26Speaker 3: for the Europeans, because you want Europeans to come in
- 16:29Speaker 3: also and visit and come see their their kids, their
- 16:32Speaker 3: their their families, all that stuff. So you know, it's interesting.
- 16:35Speaker 3: I would wonder to see if they'd entertain that. But
- 16:38Speaker 3: you know, to the tournament, you know, chech Ye they
- 16:41Speaker 3: played it. They out Canada, Canada, and there's a lot
- 16:43Speaker 3: of talks since that tournament of like minor hockey is
- 16:48Speaker 3: in shambles in Canada, and look at what we're doing.
- 16:51Speaker 4: We're not winning.
- 16:52Speaker 3: We're we were once a proud nation at the World Juniors,
- 16:54Speaker 3: used to crush everybody.
- 16:55Speaker 4: Now we're not.
- 16:56Speaker 3: But and I kind of jumped on that train a
- 16:58Speaker 3: little bit because I watched that check you game and
- 17:00Speaker 3: I was pulling my hair out because defensively, I think,
- 17:03Speaker 3: you know, I just don't think they had a good tournament.
- 17:06Speaker 3: I think they were you know, goaltending was okay, but
- 17:09Speaker 3: their decoor was was very, very sloppy. You know, miss
- 17:13Speaker 3: cues all over the ice. You know, I know Zane
- 17:16Speaker 3: Perrek won, you know, the points score, defenseman of the tournament,
- 17:20Speaker 3: set records, but defensively he was porous.
- 17:23Speaker 4: He was not helping.
- 17:24Speaker 3: You know, they were just very much looking only for
- 17:26Speaker 3: offense and only for that power play. So but when
- 17:29Speaker 3: you look at the Canada team, they had six guys
- 17:31Speaker 3: that are in the NHL. And if you have those
- 17:32Speaker 3: six guys, you know, Maclin, Celebrady and Matthew Schaeffer both
- 17:36Speaker 3: qualify for.
- 17:36Speaker 4: The World Juniors.
- 17:37Speaker 3: If they're there, they dogwalk the whole tournament. They win
- 17:41Speaker 3: by six thousand goals, just because they have two of
- 17:44Speaker 3: arguably the best players in the NHL right now, you know,
- 17:46Speaker 3: not just the World Juniors. So you know, it's fun
- 17:50Speaker 3: to see these other teams getting up in Sweden's really
- 17:53Speaker 3: developing a lot better, so as Chechia. They're starting to
- 17:55Speaker 3: play a really good brand of hockey. So I don't
- 17:59Speaker 3: think Canada's in trouble necessarily, but I do think that
- 18:04Speaker 3: they're there is an issue that they need to start
- 18:05Speaker 3: looking overall in the way you know, Canada hockey's being
- 18:09Speaker 3: played and being taught. So that was my takeaway from
- 18:12Speaker 3: the tournament. You know, that was my uh what I saw,
- 18:15Speaker 3: and I don't think listen, we're looking at the first
- 18:17Speaker 3: overall pick. No one really separated themselves. You know, the
- 18:22Speaker 3: best player of that top three was Stenberg in Sweden.
- 18:26Speaker 3: I know, had thirteen points, but he was he was
- 18:29Speaker 3: he was kind of a power play merchant. Sorry fourteen points.
- 18:32Speaker 3: He was a power play merchant in that tournament. And
- 18:35Speaker 3: he didn't and verahf either like Veraoff didn't start the tournament.
- 18:38Speaker 3: He didn't play great, neither did McKenna. So I'm a
- 18:41Speaker 3: little it's gonna be interesting to see you could see
- 18:43Speaker 3: a surprise pick first overall this summer in July.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Yeah, Stuke Grimson, the grim Reaper, said to me while
- 18:49Speaker 1: watching the game. He said, listen, I think unless mckinna
- 18:51Speaker 1: gets hit by a bus, he's a number an overall pick.
- 18:53Speaker 1: He said, this guy Steenbrick is unbelievable. Like, this guy's
- 18:55Speaker 1: an absolute stud And I'm with you on that. He
- 18:57Speaker 1: had an excellent tournament.
- 18:58Speaker 4: Hit by a bus in Grimson fashion.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Yeah, like this sulf doesn't happens too.
- 19:03Speaker 1: A couple more talks, we gets to our special guest flyers,
- 19:06Speaker 1: Rodrigo Obbols. The Jets are grounded, The Sins are struggling.
- 19:09Speaker 1: The Jets at the bottom of the NHL standings for
- 19:11Speaker 1: winning the President Trophy last season. General manager Kevin Schall
- 19:15Speaker 1: they have spoke to the media on Monday and didn't
- 19:16Speaker 1: have twenty answers admitting he didn't necessarily see it coming.
- 19:19Speaker 1: We've talked with the Jets JD. They're old, they're slow,
- 19:22Speaker 1: they only have one line, etc. How about Ottawa though
- 19:24Speaker 1: I just got back to the nation's capital. The Sens
- 19:26Speaker 1: lose to Red Wings money their last Atlantic Division GM
- 19:29Speaker 1: Steve Sales says that we have adjusted the team's expectations
- 19:32Speaker 1: when he said Auto will contend when we're ready. I
- 19:35Speaker 1: root for Travis Green, but I feel bad for him
- 19:37Speaker 1: because I'm watching that game.
- 19:38Speaker 2: They're up nine to zero shots, they're all over. The
- 19:40Speaker 2: Red Wings had a goal.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Tom McClean smartly calls time out, has the goal disallowed,
- 19:45Speaker 1: the one chance to get Bam back of the net.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Red Wings were like out shot sixteen to seven, yet
- 19:50Speaker 1: led three to nothing after one. That's what happens when
- 19:52Speaker 1: you're relying too much on Levy Marilin and as Lenis
- 19:55Speaker 1: Olmark is out due to personal reasons.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Outawa deserved better.
- 19:58Speaker 1: But this could be disappointing after making the playoffs last year.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Are they taking a step back? They just need gold,
- 20:04Speaker 3: you know. And again I think this Atlantic in the
- 20:08Speaker 3: Eastern Conference, I mean, they're four points out of a
- 20:09Speaker 3: playoff spot. So it's not. It's not this grave danger.
- 20:12Speaker 3: I think the Jets are awful. I mean, put a
- 20:14Speaker 3: fork in them right now.
- 20:15Speaker 4: This is this team.
- 20:17Speaker 3: They had an opportunity last night to win, and you know,
- 20:20Speaker 3: they gave up that goal lead, and I just think
- 20:23Speaker 3: they're you know, and I think, you know, for me,
- 20:26Speaker 3: I was going sell it, sell the farm. And I
- 20:28Speaker 3: saw somebody who read somebody talking about it. This could
- 20:31Speaker 3: be like a good kind of you know, you know,
- 20:37Speaker 3: it seems bad and it seems bleak, but they could
- 20:39Speaker 3: just fall themselves out of the playoffs, pick up a
- 20:42Speaker 3: top three pick, and then be right back to where
- 20:45Speaker 3: they are because they have all the piece They have
- 20:47Speaker 3: a lot of good, high end pieces that are locked up,
- 20:50Speaker 3: so it's not like they need to sell the farm.
- 20:51Speaker 3: They just maybe get a top three pick, they get
- 20:54Speaker 3: a Stenberg or they get a McKenna and Averrhaf and
- 20:56Speaker 3: they're off to the races. So and they just kind
- 20:59Speaker 3: of rebuild on the fly. It's not even a rebuild.
- 21:03Speaker 3: This is a retool. But yeah, there there's no way
- 21:06Speaker 3: they're making the playoffs. They they We said it three
- 21:09Speaker 3: weeks ago, four weeks ago, we talked about it's getting
- 21:11Speaker 3: late early I mean it's passe do it's uh, you know,
- 21:15Speaker 3: the alarm's not going off. They hit snooze one thousand times.
- 21:18Speaker 3: You ain't getting up now he's dead? Are you just
- 21:21Speaker 3: you just watching tal Kospa.
- 21:23Speaker 1: They're coughing up a lung right now, just like tall.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Is our last topic before we get to our special guest.
- 21:27Speaker 1: A big week for your boy, Austin Matthews. The leaves
- 21:30Speaker 1: are still digging their way out of this hole, but
- 21:33Speaker 1: after Austin Matthews getting buried in Toronto.
- 21:35Speaker 2: He's back. This is what Austin can do.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Seven goals, eleven points to a current five game points
- 21:39Speaker 1: streak at least went three to zero to two. He
- 21:42Speaker 1: was in the NHL's third Star of the Week. He
- 21:44Speaker 1: passes Matt Sundeen the franchise leittering goals.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Nice moment last day. He sees Sundeen out there honoring him.
- 21:49Speaker 1: The city Toronto was done with this guy two years ago,
- 21:52Speaker 1: but he scored sixty nine goals two seasons ago.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Is Austin Matthews back?
- 21:56Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 21:56Speaker 3: Add Nan a very stute question and his stute observation, Yeah,
- 22:01Speaker 3: Austin's playing. Austin's playing, and uh, you know the best
- 22:06Speaker 3: hockey of his season and and maybe the last couple
- 22:09Speaker 3: of years. And you know, we've always wondered with him
- 22:11Speaker 3: with injuries, and I think at the end of the day,
- 22:14Speaker 3: that might be something that hampers him long term. But yeah,
- 22:17Speaker 3: this team's kind of really dealt with a lot of adversity,
- 22:20Speaker 3: a lot of injuries. I was out, you know, talking
- 22:23Speaker 3: about I've hedged my bets saying they were going to
- 22:25Speaker 3: miss the playoffs on the NHL Network and then here
- 22:27Speaker 3: Nostra demurz and I'm saying, I think they still sneak in.
- 22:30Speaker 4: They're built for the playoffs.
- 22:31Speaker 3: So I like hedging all over the place because then
- 22:34Speaker 3: I'm never wrong and I'm always right in some format.
- 22:36Speaker 1: I'm glad you abought that, because last week you're like, yeah,
- 22:38Speaker 1: I said the Leaves were going.
- 22:39Speaker 2: To make it.
- 22:39Speaker 1: I go, I thought you said this was the Leafs
- 22:40Speaker 1: team that was built in Craig Bruby's image.
- 22:43Speaker 2: They were heavy on the buck. I thought you actually
- 22:44Speaker 2: said this was their best chance to be successful.
- 22:46Speaker 4: So I just, okay, I'm like, the key to this
- 22:49Speaker 4: business is you just convolute the waters enough.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Like the Ducks when I'm definitely no he definitely said
- 22:53Speaker 1: Ducks plaffs.
- 22:54Speaker 3: Now, and I'm going to say the Ducks are miss
- 22:56Speaker 3: it now. I'm going to turn that I've been saying
- 22:58Speaker 3: it all year. Ducks are gonna miss too much information
- 23:01Speaker 3: out there. Yeah, the Ducks are struggling right now. Jesus
- 23:04Speaker 3: get to the mayple leafs. Yeah, they've just been man,
- 23:08Speaker 3: they just kind of ham an egget. Troy Stetcher comes in.
- 23:11Speaker 3: He's playing some great hockey. You know, Jake McCabe's out,
- 23:14Speaker 3: Brandon Tannem's out. They get Brandon Carlo back. You know,
- 23:18Speaker 3: Stolars is out, and you got Joseph Wole kind of
- 23:20Speaker 3: finding his footing, you know, the missing Willie Neelander. But
- 23:23Speaker 3: Austin Matthews the kind of key point, the engine that
- 23:26Speaker 3: drives the bus here is he's been scoring, man, and
- 23:30Speaker 3: when he's scoring, they're a very dangerous dominant team. So
- 23:34Speaker 3: him and Matthew and I have been really good together,
- 23:35Speaker 3: playing some good hockey, and hopefully they can keep it up.
- 23:38Speaker 3: They got the one thing I noticed I was looking
- 23:40Speaker 3: at some stuff today is they got fifteen games until
- 23:43Speaker 3: the break, only one against a division opponent.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Wow.
- 23:46Speaker 3: So the rest are all out West in one sentence
- 23:50Speaker 3: from one Metropolitan So that's a that's a tough schedule
- 23:52Speaker 3: where you're you're not getting those kind of points playing
- 23:55Speaker 3: your division, and then after the break, it's all you're
- 23:57Speaker 3: it's all their division. So it's gonna be very interesting
- 24:00Speaker 3: to see. So you need to kind of get those
- 24:02Speaker 3: points because if you're too far back come the start
- 24:06Speaker 3: of you know, post break, now every game is a
- 24:09Speaker 3: four point game. You know you're losing the teams in
- 24:12Speaker 3: overtime where you're winning an overtime and teams are getting
- 24:14Speaker 3: the loser points and the kind of floating.
- 24:15Speaker 4: So this is their moment. They got to make a
- 24:17Speaker 4: push here.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Yeah, nothing worse than the loser points, like, oh we lost,
- 24:20Speaker 1: we got the play come on like.
- 24:21Speaker 4: At the end the day, like what we three two
- 24:22Speaker 4: to one. Would be nice for one season for them
- 24:24Speaker 4: to try it out at the NHL.
- 24:25Speaker 2: I'm with you, I think it's appalling quite frankly.
- 24:27Speaker 1: In the Eastern Conference, the number one team is Tampa
- 24:29Speaker 1: Bay fifty five points in Carolina and the.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Columbus Blue Jackets are worst at forty three.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Twelve points separates everybody like that's ridiculous, like that.
- 24:38Speaker 4: How about in the Pacific not one team in the
- 24:40Speaker 4: Pacific would be in the playoffs in the East.
- 24:43Speaker 1: The Pacific sucks Vegas so bad. Vegas lost eight of
- 24:46Speaker 1: nine games and they went up the standings.
- 24:48Speaker 4: It's stupid seat so funny.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Anyways, coming up next, this guy is an unbelievable gass
- 24:54Speaker 1: and a great guy of roof for seventh round pick
- 24:57Speaker 1: way back a day but the Vancouver Canducks and right
- 24:58Speaker 1: now he's got a home in the Philadelphia Flywers.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Rodrigo Obbols is going to the Olympics for Latvia.
- 25:03Speaker 1: He's got great stories of what his experience has been
- 25:05Speaker 1: like overseas and also now playing in Philly.
- 25:07Speaker 2: He's coming up next right after this on NHL unscripted
- 25:25Speaker 2: our special Guest Draft.
- 25:26Speaker 1: In the seventh round, one hundred and eighty fourth overall
- 25:28Speaker 1: by the Vancouver Canucks in the twenty sixteen NHL Draft.
- 25:32Speaker 1: He signed as a free agent with the Florida Panthers
- 25:34Speaker 1: in twenty nineteen, and, after years of playing in Sweden,
- 25:36Speaker 1: made his NHL debut at the Philadelphia Flyers last season.
- 25:40Speaker 1: He represented his native Latvia at the twenty two Winter
- 25:43Speaker 1: Olympics in Beijing. He'll be back representing his country next month.
- 25:46Speaker 1: In Milan, the only Rodrigo in NHL history. Rodrigo obbels
- 25:50Speaker 1: good to see him.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Man, How you doing good?
- 25:52Speaker 5: Are you guys? Thanks?
- 25:53Speaker 1: Flixenf Flyers are rolling right now. Huge win against the Ducks.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Trevor Zegres was fired up last night.
- 25:59Speaker 1: How good is it right now to be a Philadelphia
- 26:00Speaker 1: Flyer and being a team that's playing better than I
- 26:02Speaker 1: think some people expected.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:04Speaker 5: Sure, it's a lot of fun winning games, you know.
- 26:07Speaker 5: I think we've done a good job this year of
- 26:09Speaker 5: kind of bouncing back from losses, and I think that's
- 26:11Speaker 5: what's keeping us up up high in the standings. And
- 26:14Speaker 5: you see how tight it is. You can really afford
- 26:17Speaker 5: to go on like a two to three game losing street,
- 26:19Speaker 5: otherwise you're down in the standings. So definitely a lot
- 26:22Speaker 5: of fun in the room once once you win the games.
- 26:24Speaker 5: But even when we lose, I don't think we don't
- 26:26Speaker 5: lose the confidence and the trust in what we do,
- 26:30Speaker 5: so that that helps a lot as all.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Uh, Rodrigue, I'm a big fan of your story. I've been,
- 26:35Speaker 3: you know, reading up on it the last few days
- 26:37Speaker 3: and just talk a little bit about that.
- 26:39Speaker 4: A seventh round pick.
- 26:40Speaker 3: I'm from the school of being a seventh round pick,
- 26:44Speaker 3: you know, and I heard you know this year when
- 26:46Speaker 3: Rick Tackett came in, you were only slated to play
- 26:48Speaker 3: like one game in the preseason, and then after game one,
- 26:50Speaker 3: he's like, I need to see this guy again. I
- 26:52Speaker 3: need to see this guy again. You end up making
- 26:53Speaker 3: the team, and you know you've been a big piece
- 26:57Speaker 3: for this team.
- 26:57Speaker 4: So just just.
- 26:58Speaker 3: Talk about your story and the lead up to getting
- 27:00Speaker 3: here and kind of a stabbing yourself in the NHL.
- 27:04Speaker 5: Yeah, obviously a journeyman type of the type of story,
- 27:07Speaker 5: but uh, kind of once once I was in Florida
- 27:11Speaker 5: and Covid hit, I felt like, uh went back to
- 27:14Speaker 5: Sweden and then uh as Bill Zido came in and
- 27:17Speaker 5: they kind of did a whole turn around there and
- 27:19Speaker 5: there's a bunch of stuff going on there where the
- 27:21Speaker 5: following season, like Tampa and Florida, we're fearing an HL team,
- 27:26Speaker 5: so there were any spots left to go there, so
- 27:28Speaker 5: we kind of parted the ways there. Uh. And then
- 27:31Speaker 5: the dream the dreams always obviously alive once you're while
- 27:35Speaker 5: you're playing. Uh, just trying to but it wasn't too
- 27:38Speaker 5: focused on it. And then the last summer Danny Danny
- 27:42Speaker 5: Sens sends a texta agent and kind of I felt
- 27:45Speaker 5: to myself that I kind of all wait to come
- 27:47Speaker 5: and give it one more shot to kind of once
- 27:49Speaker 5: I'm done and finished, I kind of have an answer
- 27:52Speaker 5: to myself, could I or I couldn't. So I'm not
- 27:54Speaker 5: one of those guys so who tell the stories of oh,
- 27:56Speaker 5: you know, if that, that and that didn't happen, I
- 27:58Speaker 5: would be there, you know. So obviously a lot of
- 28:01Speaker 5: a lot of fun last year kind of having my
- 28:03Speaker 5: debut and boring Bowl. But then to kind of just
- 28:07Speaker 5: you know, you you experience the lifestyle of NHL and
- 28:09Speaker 5: you you want to scraw, the scratch and claw your
- 28:12Speaker 5: way to stay in it.
- 28:13Speaker 4: That's the truth.
- 28:14Speaker 5: So H got another contract, and yeah, I had a
- 28:17Speaker 5: good summer of training and uh had a good had
- 28:20Speaker 5: had a good camp and uh, I think I showed
- 28:22Speaker 5: the strengths I have. But you know, it's it's a grind,
- 28:25Speaker 5: especially this year when I'm here up up all year.
- 28:28Speaker 5: It's it's definitely a challenge to kind of keep that
- 28:30Speaker 5: level every game.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's always important to have a good relationship,
- 28:34Speaker 1: like you said, not only with the front of opposit
- 28:35Speaker 1: in terms of Danny bre are reaching out your agent
- 28:37Speaker 1: and giving you the shot, but also your head coach
- 28:39Speaker 1: Rick talking it's his first season in Philadelphia, but he's
- 28:41Speaker 1: a veteran coach. Clearly it seems like you're his kind
- 28:44Speaker 1: of player. What's your relationship like we talk, I.
- 28:46Speaker 5: Think it's it's real good. Uh. I think I liked
- 28:48Speaker 5: it in the during the camp once once he got
- 28:51Speaker 5: to know each other, he kind of right away said
- 28:53Speaker 5: what he wants to see from me and what I
- 28:55Speaker 5: have to do to get into the lineup and to
- 28:57Speaker 5: stay in the lineup. And I think as a player
- 28:59Speaker 5: in my role, it's it's easier then because you're not
- 29:03Speaker 5: you're not thinking about that yourself. You're kind of just going. Now,
- 29:06Speaker 5: I've been doing the things that were feeing asked of you,
- 29:08Speaker 5: and uh, I think that helps a lot. And the
- 29:10Speaker 5: whole coaching staff as a as a whole has been
- 29:13Speaker 5: really helpful. Whenever there's a dip in the game, they
- 29:16Speaker 5: see it, they acknowledge it, they show a video, they
- 29:18Speaker 5: show you know, not only the bad, but also kind
- 29:21Speaker 5: of mix into good, so you can see the difference
- 29:23Speaker 5: of when you're playing good and when you're playing not
- 29:24Speaker 5: so good. So I think it's it's it's been all
- 29:27Speaker 5: good and you know, them coming in. I think it's
- 29:30Speaker 5: it's helped my case because when the new coaching staff
- 29:32Speaker 5: comes in, it's it's a fresh set of eyes and
- 29:34Speaker 5: kind of you have a new chance to through yourself maybe,
- 29:37Speaker 5: whereas you know, when you have a coach who's been
- 29:39Speaker 5: there for a couple of years here or you kind
- 29:41Speaker 5: of has his mind set up on where who plays.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Yeah, and I mean listen, you being a twenty nine
- 29:48Speaker 3: year old too, you understand kind of you know, sometimes
- 29:52Speaker 3: when you're younger, you're a little bit more hesitant to
- 29:53Speaker 3: take what the coach is saying. And you've kind of
- 29:56Speaker 3: explained the way you're trying to scratch and claws, so
- 29:58Speaker 3: you're going to do with the coach ask of you.
- 30:00Speaker 3: But you know, being a twenty nine year old rookie,
- 30:02Speaker 3: talk a little bit about that, like, you know, did
- 30:05Speaker 3: you guys have rookie party yet? And if you did
- 30:08Speaker 3: have rookie party where the guys like, hey, take it
- 30:09Speaker 3: easy on him, because you got some twenty four year
- 30:11Speaker 3: old veterans being like, hey look at this rookie, and
- 30:15Speaker 3: you got you know, you got a kid you're you're
- 30:17Speaker 3: twenty nine, you've been in the Olympics. Just talk a
- 30:19Speaker 3: little bit about that being your age and being a rookie.
- 30:22Speaker 5: No, the rookie party is still on tap, so it's
- 30:25Speaker 5: still on the way here. It's such a condensed schedule
- 30:27Speaker 5: with the Olympics. It's honestly they've been fighting their way
- 30:30Speaker 5: to to kind of fit it into the schedule because
- 30:33Speaker 5: now I think in January we have like fifteen game
- 30:35Speaker 5: to thirty days. So no, it's it's it's been a
- 30:40Speaker 5: lot of fun.
- 30:40Speaker 4: You know.
- 30:41Speaker 5: Obviously there's a lot of like I'm older, so I
- 30:44Speaker 5: kind of know the game, but there's still a lot
- 30:45Speaker 5: of things I don't know here that I'm still learning
- 30:47Speaker 5: every day myself, so just trying to do my best
- 30:52Speaker 5: whatever I can. So it's it's definitely been a lot
- 30:54Speaker 5: of fun. But there's hasn't been a lot of a
- 30:56Speaker 5: lot of hazing and stuff like that like back in
- 30:58Speaker 5: the day, so that's probably a good thing like that,
- 31:01Speaker 5: So I don't don't feel as a rookie that bad.
- 31:03Speaker 1: So yeah, and you turn thirty this week, so you
- 31:06Speaker 1: can hold your own. If anyone tries to, he can
- 31:08Speaker 1: beat up. And as far as his team overall, Zecres
- 31:12Speaker 1: has been a great story rod Rigo, He's been a
- 31:14Speaker 1: point of game player, obviously rejuvenated in Philadelphia. Travis Kneky
- 31:17Speaker 1: has been wonderful for years. Obviously, Sean Couturier has been
- 31:20Speaker 1: a great leadership player. Sanahaim's going to the Olympics. Who's
- 31:23Speaker 1: somebody on this team that you've gravitated to. Who's somebody
- 31:25Speaker 1: that you have a good relationship with?
- 31:28Speaker 5: I mean, naturally with the sweets as I played in Sweden,
- 31:30Speaker 5: so lo on, so that those are the guys that
- 31:32Speaker 5: are kind of kind of hanging around with the most.
- 31:34Speaker 5: But you know, there's cubbing in last year. You hear
- 31:38Speaker 5: about how good the room is and you're like, okay,
- 31:41Speaker 5: like how good could it be? But then you see,
- 31:43Speaker 5: like from day one you get in, it doesn't matter
- 31:46Speaker 5: if you're a HL guy ANHLD guy. Everybody's bonding with everyone.
- 31:49Speaker 5: Everyone's even like the you know, just making you feel welcomed.
- 31:53Speaker 5: Like the first day I got into Gym, obviously I
- 31:55Speaker 5: didn't I didn't know anyone, but right away Scott Lawden,
- 31:58Speaker 5: who's down in Toronto, he comes up. He's like, hey man,
- 32:00Speaker 5: nice to meet you, Like we talked about the Worlds
- 32:03Speaker 5: of the year before we played in the World else
- 32:04Speaker 5: He's Likeriga is my favorite city and like stuff like that.
- 32:07Speaker 5: So I think that the you know, they don't have
- 32:11Speaker 5: to do it realistically, but you know, they take their
- 32:14Speaker 5: time to do it, and this makes every guy feel
- 32:16Speaker 5: welcome and feel more comfortable, which uh and obviosite. Then
- 32:20Speaker 5: it helps you perform better and you you know, the
- 32:23Speaker 5: more comfortable for you feel, the better you can play.
- 32:25Speaker 5: So I think that's a good thing they got going
- 32:27Speaker 5: on here, and that's uh, you know, something I'd try
- 32:30Speaker 5: to keep doing now as well, whether it's here or
- 32:33Speaker 5: wherever I play in my career.
- 32:36Speaker 3: Who kind of keeps it, you know, the lightest in
- 32:38Speaker 3: the room because you know, I know Rick Talcket's a
- 32:40Speaker 3: little I played for him, his little gruff and can
- 32:43Speaker 3: at times. He likes guys to be locked and he
- 32:45Speaker 3: likes guys have fun too. So but like, who's kind
- 32:47Speaker 3: of the guy I know, do you have zegres? But
- 32:49Speaker 3: I know, you know, I played with Travis Connectney and
- 32:52Speaker 3: and Cuturia. I know these guys all have great personalities,
- 32:55Speaker 3: But who's the guy that kind of keeps it light
- 32:56Speaker 3: and keeps everybody laughing in the room.
- 32:59Speaker 5: No, I think I think Zegris is. Zegres is one
- 33:02Speaker 5: of a kind of I don't thin. I don't think
- 33:03Speaker 5: I've seen that guy have a bad day in my life.
- 33:05Speaker 5: So you know, it's every day he comes in with
- 33:08Speaker 5: a smile and that kind of just affects everyone else
- 33:10Speaker 5: around where you just keep a positive attitude no matter
- 33:13Speaker 5: what happens. And they had they had some prank wars
- 33:16Speaker 5: going on here, so that was pretty pretty funny to
- 33:18Speaker 5: watch around. So it's it was getting a bit of
- 33:20Speaker 5: out of control. So I think it's settled down now
- 33:22Speaker 5: a little bit, but it was there was some good
- 33:25Speaker 5: stuff going off.
- 33:26Speaker 3: Oh best, let's hear it. Best prank Who's who's prank
- 33:30Speaker 3: and who?
- 33:30Speaker 5: And so far I'm not gonna name any names, but
- 33:34Speaker 5: there there was some you know that icy hot icy
- 33:39Speaker 5: one on the on the underwear.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Oh man, that's a disaster.
- 33:44Speaker 4: I've seen that one done before.
- 33:46Speaker 5: Yeah, but uh, for what it's worth, a guy who
- 33:49Speaker 5: got frank he was absolutely buzzing that night in the
- 33:51Speaker 5: game because that was done at the morning skirt. I'm
- 33:53Speaker 5: pretty sure he had like one or two goals. So
- 33:54Speaker 5: he's like dude, they have to get icy hot every
- 33:56Speaker 5: day now, so you know, hockey players are super surface, so.
- 34:00Speaker 4: A little icy hot on the balls goes a long way.
- 34:03Speaker 5: I guess the leggs going for sure.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Just to go back to the world stage, you have
- 34:09Speaker 1: a couple of Lafean hockey legends, Rodrigo and your coaching
- 34:12Speaker 1: staff Sandus Oselnch and Archer's urbe. How big a deal
- 34:16Speaker 1: is it playing for two the all time greats from
- 34:17Speaker 1: your country.
- 34:19Speaker 5: Yes, sand this is going to be new for me.
- 34:21Speaker 5: I never never play for him behind a bench, but
- 34:26Speaker 5: you know you've heard the stories of uh, how great
- 34:29Speaker 5: of a captain he's been in the national team and
- 34:31Speaker 5: pretty much everywhere he's been, so uh, then he definitely
- 34:35Speaker 5: knows the time for the right word, and uh, Archers
- 34:38Speaker 5: have been have been really great. He's he's kind of
- 34:40Speaker 5: another guy who's you know, always positive, always giving you
- 34:44Speaker 5: motivation and kind of you know when day when they
- 34:46Speaker 5: speak up, everybody definitely shuts up and listens up because
- 34:49Speaker 5: what they you know, what they say, they mean it,
- 34:51Speaker 5: and that there's a reason why they're talking at that point.
- 34:55Speaker 3: Well, the Labvian program, too at the the world stage
- 34:58Speaker 3: is slowly improved year over year, and you guys really
- 35:02Speaker 3: stay in tournaments and I mean you only twenty three
- 35:05Speaker 3: you beat the Americans four to three and overtime at
- 35:06Speaker 3: the World Championships for bronze. You were on that team.
- 35:09Speaker 3: Talk a little bit about that experience and like are
- 35:12Speaker 3: you trying to pull from that going into the Olympics
- 35:15Speaker 3: this year?
- 35:16Speaker 5: Yeah, that was that was a mind blowing experience. Uh,
- 35:20Speaker 5: you know, we start to tournament oh and two, and
- 35:22Speaker 5: that tournament is so short that like oh and two
- 35:24Speaker 5: is not really obviously ideal, and then we were outle
- 35:27Speaker 5: off like seven in a row, I think, or whatever
- 35:29Speaker 5: it was until until we lost to the Canadians and
- 35:32Speaker 5: the and the Semis there. But there's just another case
- 35:35Speaker 5: where actually their day, someone asked me like about, uh,
- 35:38Speaker 5: what's what's a good what's a good team? I guess
- 35:42Speaker 5: when you feel it. And there's like similar vibes going
- 35:44Speaker 5: between the Labdean team and here where everybody buys into
- 35:47Speaker 5: their roles and everybody's happy for each other. So it
- 35:51Speaker 5: doesn't matter who scores as long as the guy and
- 35:53Speaker 5: the you know, maroon in white jersey or in our
- 35:56Speaker 5: case here orange and black jersey. So as long as
- 35:58Speaker 5: the guy, the guy's their team. I year, you're happy
- 36:01Speaker 5: for him and you want to see guys do well.
- 36:02Speaker 5: And uh, I think that's that's that's what keeps good
- 36:06Speaker 5: teams going, especially maybe teams were not expected to do
- 36:09Speaker 5: us as good. They kind of take it, take it,
- 36:12Speaker 5: you know, as motivation and obviously a lot different higher
- 36:17Speaker 5: the US team we're going to face in the first
- 36:19Speaker 5: game against the in the Olympics rather than the bronze game.
- 36:22Speaker 5: But I think it's fun. I think everybody's excited. You know,
- 36:25Speaker 5: you watch these guys every day on YouTube pulling off
- 36:28Speaker 5: filight reels, and now you have four lines of them.
- 36:30Speaker 5: Who can you know, put you on Instagram? So that's
- 36:34Speaker 5: a big challenge for us. But like I said, for us,
- 36:38Speaker 5: we we love these short tournaments because it's just one game. Uh,
- 36:42Speaker 5: you know, anything can happen in hockey in one game.
- 36:44Speaker 5: We're going to go out and do our best. And
- 36:46Speaker 5: I think that's since since the days of Bob Harley
- 36:49Speaker 5: and the national team, he's kind of changed that mindset
- 36:51Speaker 5: were before we would I remember when I started in
- 36:54Speaker 5: the national team, we're like playing the big teams. We're like, okay,
- 36:56Speaker 5: if we if we don't stay in early. It's done though,
- 36:59Speaker 5: you know pretty much for you we we're not even
- 37:01Speaker 5: like we don't even believe that we can win. But
- 37:04Speaker 5: since he came in, we're we definitely believe we can
- 37:06Speaker 5: beat every every team we're playing. And uh, that showed
- 37:10Speaker 5: I think in our results.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Yeah, and part of that point, like you said, in
- 37:13Speaker 2: one game, anything can happen. You've got good goal to here.
- 37:15Speaker 1: You've got Archer, Shee Loaves and Elvis mers liacoln So
- 37:17Speaker 1: how nice is having those goalies going into the Olympics.
- 37:20Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure, even even the blests. He is the
- 37:22Speaker 5: guy who almost pulled up Sid and so really good.
- 37:26Speaker 5: He's still he's still kicking around. He's he's in Germany.
- 37:29Speaker 5: I think he's two years from row. He's a goalie
- 37:30Speaker 5: of the year there, so I think he's just aging
- 37:32Speaker 5: like wine. So I think for us, it doesn't matter
- 37:35Speaker 5: who who who we put in that all all three
- 37:38Speaker 5: of them can give us a good chance to win
- 37:39Speaker 5: a game. And that's you know, really exciting, uh because
- 37:43Speaker 5: then you kind of play for the goalie. That's that's
- 37:45Speaker 5: kind of our our our we play with a lot
- 37:47Speaker 5: of hearts, so you see the guys even in the
- 37:50Speaker 5: in the world when we beat like Sweden, guys are
- 37:52Speaker 5: blocking shops with their faces and everything, the whole locker
- 37:55Speaker 5: rooms and ice pegs. But if you, you know, you
- 37:57Speaker 5: win the game, it's it makes it definitely worth it.
- 38:01Speaker 3: Uh, talk about being a dad as well, you know,
- 38:03Speaker 3: you try. I think it's four years old, yes, four
- 38:07Speaker 3: years old, like you know, seeing the you at the Olympics,
- 38:11Speaker 3: seen you at the World Championships, but you know it
- 38:13Speaker 3: was quite young.
- 38:15Speaker 4: What jersey is he like?
- 38:17Speaker 3: Does he like the Latvian jersey more than the Philadelphia
- 38:20Speaker 3: Flyers jersey?
- 38:21Speaker 4: Or is it just as he chosen? Yet? How's that
- 38:26Speaker 4: working out?
- 38:26Speaker 5: Oh, it's it's an awesome ads now. Uh, you know
- 38:29Speaker 5: he's he's pretty much understands what's going on after every
- 38:32Speaker 5: game now seeing him in the oh he does. Yeah,
- 38:35Speaker 5: it's it's super exciting. I remember we came back from
- 38:37Speaker 5: like the long road trip. Now obviously he doesn't understand
- 38:40Speaker 5: the road trips yet why I disappear for a week.
- 38:43Speaker 5: But then I remember we came back late night. He
- 38:46Speaker 5: was already sleeping in my wife's Like he's waiting for you,
- 38:48Speaker 5: like you're the Santa Claus or something like he was,
- 38:51Speaker 5: you know, super excited for me to come back. And
- 38:53Speaker 5: he still sleeps in our bed, so and I remember
- 38:57Speaker 5: it late next to him, it's like three am, and
- 38:59Speaker 5: he like, I guess he felted me, like woke up sleep.
- 39:01Speaker 2: He's a god.
- 39:03Speaker 5: And I promised him on the off I usually take
- 39:05Speaker 5: him here to your training center, kind of get him
- 39:07Speaker 5: on the ice because you know you love to do it,
- 39:09Speaker 5: so I'll take him to start me.
- 39:10Speaker 6: We're going to play hockey tomorrow. I was like, no, yes, yes,
- 39:13Speaker 6: but it's three Yeah, let's go back to sleep, all right,
- 39:15Speaker 6: and we'll pass it that. So as for New Jersey,
- 39:18Speaker 6: he's got the Flyers jersey right now. The national team
- 39:21Speaker 6: jersey has been ordered, so he'll have that in the Olympics.
- 39:24Speaker 6: So I'm sure he he just represents whatever represents. So
- 39:28Speaker 6: it's it's definitely a lot of fun right now seeing
- 39:30Speaker 6: him go around kind of being pumped for me after games.
- 39:33Speaker 6: He's like even yesterday, I was kind of like feeling
- 39:36Speaker 6: down on myself, like I don't think I had the
- 39:38Speaker 6: best first period. Obviously that goal against I wish I
- 39:41Speaker 6: could get back, but luckily the guys pulled through and
- 39:43Speaker 6: we won but then even like how we were dressing
- 39:45Speaker 6: for for to go to bed and he's like that
- 39:48Speaker 6: you played really well, and I was like, oh, buddy best.
- 39:52Speaker 6: So it just kind of warmed her heart, you know.
- 39:55Speaker 1: It's like you're mini me. It's fantastic. Yeah, exactly, supporting
- 39:58Speaker 1: in Lovey the whole way through. I have to ask you,
- 40:00Speaker 1: how did you get the name rod Rigo? That doesn't
- 40:02Speaker 1: strike me as a common Laftean name.
- 40:04Speaker 5: No, there was a player. I think Rodrigo Lovins Uh.
- 40:08Speaker 5: He was really good friends at the time with my dad,
- 40:10Speaker 5: So I think that's where the inspiration come from. And
- 40:15Speaker 5: there are some funny stories for sure with.
- 40:17Speaker 2: With the name.
- 40:17Speaker 4: Uh.
- 40:18Speaker 5: I think when I wrote to my billip mom in Portland,
- 40:21Speaker 5: first of all, she couldn't believe that, like I was
- 40:24Speaker 5: writing in English so well, and she's like, no chance,
- 40:27Speaker 5: this is the guy writing it. And then she's like,
- 40:30Speaker 5: you do, Brodrigo. Is this like a Mexican or a
- 40:32Speaker 5: Spanish guy coming? And it's the same in Florida when
- 40:34Speaker 5: I order an Uber, I get into Uber and the
- 40:37Speaker 5: guys go right away kept Pusa. I'm like, no, no,
- 40:39Speaker 5: that's I got nothing in Spanish. Sorry, just nake.
- 40:44Speaker 3: Well, I was gonna ask, like, your English is fantastic,
- 40:47Speaker 3: and do you know did you learn playing in the
- 40:49Speaker 3: Swedish league, because you know you don't have any lappings there,
- 40:52Speaker 3: so she kind of got to you got to speak
- 40:54Speaker 3: English with the guys or how'd you kind of learn
- 40:56Speaker 3: because you're you're like I said, you're fantastic.
- 40:59Speaker 5: Yeah, English was pretty much so that that played in Sweden.
- 41:03Speaker 5: So it's more like when I was a kid. First
- 41:05Speaker 5: of all, you know, you're watching TV and when you're
- 41:09Speaker 5: a kid, you're just a sponge, so you're just picking
- 41:11Speaker 5: up everything and in English. So English was kind of
- 41:13Speaker 5: the second language I learned, and it was sweetish and
- 41:16Speaker 5: starting school I also picked up rushing because it was
- 41:19Speaker 5: mandatory in our in our school and back in the day,
- 41:22Speaker 5: so brocking four languages. So it's a helpful.
- 41:25Speaker 3: O Seki's guy right now, who.
- 41:29Speaker 5: You got Swedish? Yeah, So that's pretty much English is.
- 41:35Speaker 5: You know, it's even in school back home, it was
- 41:38Speaker 5: like starting from second grade, we have to learn it
- 41:39Speaker 5: in the school I was going to, So it's been
- 41:41Speaker 5: around my my whole life.
- 41:44Speaker 2: That's great.
- 41:44Speaker 1: I did all that, I like I said, you could
- 41:46Speaker 1: fool anybody, don' when we think you're laughing, they think
- 41:48Speaker 1: you're just some guy.
- 41:49Speaker 4: From Russian too.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Absolutely, tw what do you got for Rodrigo?
- 41:53Speaker 4: Just a couple of quick ones, Rodrigo.
- 41:55Speaker 7: I'm curious about your international experience, you know, obviously it
- 42:00Speaker 7: took you a little while to finally get to the NHL.
- 42:03Speaker 7: Between playing in Swede in COVID and your experience in Florida,
- 42:07Speaker 7: I mean, I gotta know, what, what's the closest you
- 42:10Speaker 7: came to thinking to yourself maybe I'm just not gonna
- 42:14Speaker 7: make it or did you never give up on that
- 42:16Speaker 7: dream to be in the NHL.
- 42:18Speaker 5: Uh? I think after like the COVID one coming back
- 42:21Speaker 5: and you start realized, like twenty four, twenty five, twenty six,
- 42:25Speaker 5: you're like, Okay, I guess, like you know, for me
- 42:30Speaker 5: playing like playing in the world, when I play against
- 42:32Speaker 5: you guys, you know, I feel like I can't play there.
- 42:35Speaker 5: So that's what kind of kind of like, you know,
- 42:37Speaker 5: it keeps the dream alive, I guess. And then just
- 42:40Speaker 5: stringing a couple of good years together in Sweden, you know,
- 42:45Speaker 5: just it's a lot a lot about like the place
- 42:47Speaker 5: and opportunity and I feel like for here for me,
- 42:50Speaker 5: this was the perfect place and opportunity to come and
- 42:53Speaker 5: try kind of last year in the situation flyers where
- 42:56Speaker 5: there were some openings in the center to try and
- 42:59Speaker 5: make it. And you know, I don't think last year.
- 43:01Speaker 5: I had the best camp last season, coming in for
- 43:03Speaker 5: the first time, she first time, a lot of new stuff,
- 43:07Speaker 5: smaller ice again, getting used to all this stuff. But
- 43:10Speaker 5: that helped me, I think this year to prepare in
- 43:12Speaker 5: the summer better, knowing what I need to work on
- 43:15Speaker 5: and kind of working out my game in the summer.
- 43:17Speaker 5: So but yeah, for sure there's spotsbery you don't think
- 43:21Speaker 5: like okay, it's dead, but you're like, okay, the chances
- 43:24Speaker 5: of getting back are getting smaller and smaller every year.
- 43:27Speaker 5: But then you know, looking around my best friend who's
- 43:31Speaker 5: in in Florida, Bolinskas he he had a similar kind
- 43:34Speaker 5: of story where he would get b man and and
- 43:37Speaker 5: then uh in the Czech League signed signed a contract,
- 43:41Speaker 5: went over pert seriously. He didn't play that much in
- 43:43Speaker 5: the in the playoffs, but still was was there on
- 43:46Speaker 5: the team for the first Stanley Cup. In the second year,
- 43:48Speaker 5: he played a couple of games, scored a big goal
- 43:51Speaker 5: against Toronto, so he kind of like in a in
- 43:54Speaker 5: a way inspired. Okay, it's it's possible, like he just
- 43:57Speaker 5: did it, like why not me? And uh, luckily I
- 43:59Speaker 5: get the chance to do it, and.
- 44:01Speaker 7: You mentioned right place, right opportunity. I've got to get
- 44:04Speaker 7: your impression of Philadelphia. Ad NaN's a big Philadelphia sports guy. Eagles, Phillies, Sixers.
- 44:10Speaker 4: The fans suck.
- 44:12Speaker 1: Look Eagles right here, ready to go big game for
- 44:15Speaker 1: the Eagles on Sunday.
- 44:17Speaker 7: All the teams are enjoying a moment right now. It
- 44:20Speaker 7: seems I'd love to hear your sort of welcome to
- 44:22Speaker 7: Philly moment and just your your impression so far the city.
- 44:26Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's it's been great. I have no no
- 44:30Speaker 5: what do you say, No, no complaints at all. I've
- 44:32Speaker 5: loved every minute I've been here. You obviously you see
- 44:36Speaker 5: the you know Phillies had a good regular season. There
- 44:39Speaker 5: the Eagles winning the super Bowl last year, and you
- 44:41Speaker 5: see and how how rowdy and how rallied behind the
- 44:44Speaker 5: teams the fans get. I think that kind of also
- 44:47Speaker 5: motivates the guys like, hell, we we want to be
- 44:49Speaker 5: there as well. We want to be that team who
- 44:51Speaker 5: like gets rallied behind. So it's it's absinitely a lot
- 44:54Speaker 5: of fun.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Uh.
- 44:55Speaker 5: When's my first Eagles game this when we got back
- 44:58Speaker 5: this Sunday where I played the Commander, So that was
- 45:01Speaker 5: that was fun. Uh obviously discover.
- 45:03Speaker 2: The brutal game to go to the I know, I know,
- 45:06Speaker 2: we got.
- 45:07Speaker 5: Some tickets in the suite, so I think it was
- 45:09Speaker 5: it was it was nice to go too. So uh,
- 45:11Speaker 5: you know, even even like again back to my kid,
- 45:14Speaker 5: he kind of still understands it and he loves the
- 45:17Speaker 5: e A. G. L. E. S stands. So whenever he
- 45:20Speaker 5: got to touchdown, he was pretty pretty pumped up. So
- 45:22Speaker 5: it's it's it's it's it's fun. It's definitely a lot
- 45:24Speaker 5: of fun. So U and it kind of like makes
- 45:27Speaker 5: you want to perform better than uh maybe expected again
- 45:30Speaker 5: and you know kind of you see the crowd we
- 45:32Speaker 5: had we had yesterday and for it's similar in the playoffs.
- 45:35Speaker 5: So that's something we want to bring back to the
- 45:37Speaker 5: to the city of Philadelphia.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Well, it's been a fantastic here for the Philadelphia Flowers.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Watching that game last night, when Jim Jackson said the
- 45:43Speaker 1: Flowers officially the halfway mark of the season and on
- 45:46Speaker 1: pace for over one hundred points. That is eye opening.
- 45:48Speaker 1: Fifty one points right now, forty one games played you
- 45:51Speaker 1: guys overall or third in the metro. But you got
- 45:53Speaker 1: games in hand on the Islanders and on the Hurricanes,
- 45:56Speaker 1: So congrats and having a great season in Philadelphia.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Go Birds this Sunday against the Niners. And good luck
- 46:00Speaker 2: of course of the Olympics.
- 46:02Speaker 4: Yes, thank you.
- 46:03Speaker 3: I'm going to get my lapping jersey now, so all right, perfect,
- 46:06Speaker 3: I'm a big fan of yours man in your story,
- 46:08Speaker 3: so keep it going, all right, I appreciate it.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Once again, thank you to Rodrigo Obbels.
- 46:21Speaker 1: When it comes to Rodrigo's I love Rodrigo Prieto, who
- 46:24Speaker 1: is a great cinematographer. Work to Martin Scorre says he
- 46:26Speaker 1: kills the fire moon in the Irish move But that's
- 46:28Speaker 1: of course where my brain goes when it comes to
- 46:30Speaker 1: Cinephile in sixty our best films in twenty twenty five
- 46:33Speaker 1: will kick it off with number ten, A Little Prayer,
- 46:35Speaker 1: a little independent film.
- 46:36Speaker 2: It's by the Southern Family.
- 46:38Speaker 1: David Strathairn unbelievable, one of the best roles of his career.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Really enjoyed this film.
- 46:42Speaker 1: A Little Prayers by Number ten movie Number nine, Sinners.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Everyone's talking about vampire's blood, gore, white people, raping black culture.
- 46:49Speaker 2: You got it? Really yes? Ryan Coogler might win an
- 46:52Speaker 2: Academy Award.
- 46:53Speaker 4: Really yeah.
- 46:54Speaker 1: Ryan Coogler might win an Academy work Best Original Screenplay.
- 46:57Speaker 4: I hate this list already.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Number eight.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Blue Moon Ethan Hawk will get his first nomination for
- 47:02Speaker 1: Best Actor treat Performance Lorenz Hart. He's been promoting the film,
- 47:05Speaker 1: by the way. He was on Colbert the other night.
- 47:07Speaker 1: He was talking about Blue Moon, which he hopes people
- 47:09Speaker 1: are seeing. Obviously independent film can get the word out,
- 47:11Speaker 1: and he said his sibl his kids are being asked,
- 47:14Speaker 1: what's it like having a famous dad? They're like, what
- 47:16Speaker 1: nobody cares about that? It's all but Maya Hawk. Course,
- 47:18Speaker 1: his daughter is in Stranger Things. Finally, wrapping up on
- 47:21Speaker 1: New Year's Eve. Number seven, What has been number seven?
- 47:24Speaker 1: I uh, number differs. It is Jay Kelly, which I understand.
- 47:28Speaker 1: It's not for everyone's taste, as tal was saying, gets
- 47:30Speaker 1: annoyed by Noah bomb Back a little bit, but George
- 47:32Speaker 1: Clardy the role fits him like a glove. I think
- 47:34Speaker 1: it's a literate script by Bombback and Adam Sandler giving
- 47:37Speaker 1: perhaps the best performance of his career. Maybe you'll finally
- 47:40Speaker 1: get that long awaited Academy Award nomination. Number six Paul
- 47:44Speaker 1: Thomas Anderson, The Coronation is complete, one battle after another.
- 47:47Speaker 1: My man has been nominated for eleven Academy Awards. He's
- 47:50Speaker 1: never won five times. He's been nominated for screenplay, three times,
- 47:53Speaker 1: for Director, three times for Best Picture, never won Critics'
- 47:56Speaker 1: Choice worths.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Just happened on Sunday.
- 47:57Speaker 1: Pete Anderson wins Best Picture, Best Director, It's Coming, Best
- 48:01Speaker 1: Adaptive Screenplay.
- 48:02Speaker 2: It's Coming. Get Ready for the Oscars. Number five Magazine Dreams.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Jonathan Major's would have been nominated for an Academy Award
- 48:08Speaker 1: until his private life went sideways. This film came out
- 48:10Speaker 1: two years ago and finally got released. Now came out
- 48:12Speaker 1: at sun Dance. Had a great stir modern day taxi driver,
- 48:15Speaker 1: but a bodybuilder trying to overcome some personal demons. I
- 48:18Speaker 1: thought it was a brilliant film. Number five Magazine Dreams.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Number four, Bring out the Kleenex Hamnet. Jesse Buckley just
- 48:25Speaker 1: won Best Actress Critics Choice Awards. I think she should
- 48:27Speaker 1: win the Oscar for Best Actress. It's about William Shakespeare
- 48:30Speaker 1: and his wife, true life story. If you love period pieces,
- 48:32Speaker 1: if you love to cry, if you like an emotional
- 48:35Speaker 1: moment at the theater, go watch Hamnet from Chloe Shao
- 48:37Speaker 1: previously won an Oscar for No Madland Number three. We're
- 48:40Speaker 1: gonna get Talis thoughts on this because he just saw it.
- 48:42Speaker 1: It's Marty Supreme, one half of the Saftie Brothers. Josh
- 48:45Speaker 1: Saftie timitated the better one, right, the better one. Let's
- 48:48Speaker 1: be honest. Betty Saftie makes this magic machine. Nobody liked it.
- 48:51Speaker 1: Josh Safties's Marty Supreme. It's become a sensation.
- 48:54Speaker 2: A twenty four is a home for independent film.
- 48:56Speaker 1: For them to put sixty to seventy million dollars in
- 48:59Speaker 1: an indie movie, This was a huge bet. They put
- 49:01Speaker 1: in Shallow May and one half of the Safties and
- 49:03Speaker 1: it's coming through big time. I know Shalla May with
- 49:05Speaker 1: this persona can be a little bit irritating, he can
- 49:07Speaker 1: be a little bit arrogant. He's smashing Kylie Jenner, but
- 49:10Speaker 1: he gives a hell of a performance. This is back
- 49:12Speaker 1: to back years though he's been brilliant. He was outstanding
- 49:14Speaker 1: as Bob Dylan didn't win the Academy Award. I think
- 49:16Speaker 1: this year he wins for Marty Supreme playing in the
- 49:18Speaker 1: nineteen fifties Ping Pong champion him versus DiCaprio. A great
- 49:22Speaker 1: head to head race number two, another Iranian masterpiece. It
- 49:25Speaker 1: was just an accident. Jafar Panah. He's the director. He's
- 49:28Speaker 1: been jailed in his native Iran for one year because
- 49:31Speaker 1: the films that he's made have been critical to to
- 49:32Speaker 1: Italian regime. This film, I think will not only get
- 49:35Speaker 1: nominated for Best International Film, He's got a good chance
- 49:37Speaker 1: of getting nominated for Best Director. It's an incredible film
- 49:40Speaker 1: with a with a literally haunting ending. It is so
- 49:42Speaker 1: powerfully done and number one a streamer for you. It's
- 49:45Speaker 1: on Apple TV plus a four and a half hour
- 49:48Speaker 1: five part documentary, mister Scorsese, the best director of all time,
- 49:53Speaker 1: Just indulging the greatness of Marty. Rebecca Miller directed at
- 49:56Speaker 1: Daniel day Lewis's wife Intimate stories about Marty does not
- 49:59Speaker 1: shy away from his personal foibles.
- 50:01Speaker 2: The man has been married.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Five times, had a serious cocaine addiction. He's also getting
- 50:05Speaker 1: some of the greatest films.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Of all times.
- 50:06Speaker 4: Married five times, that's right.
- 50:08Speaker 1: Stories about raging, bold taxi driver, Goodfellas, the Wolf of
- 50:11Speaker 1: Wall Street. The Irishman is so much more, mister Scorsese
- 50:14Speaker 1: my favorite film of the year.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Tal give us your thoughts on Marty Supreme.
- 50:18Speaker 7: Loved Marty Cypri. I mean, I'm a big Saftie Brothers guy.
- 50:21Speaker 7: I loved uncut Gems. I've been in on them since
- 50:24Speaker 7: the Lenny Cook film. The Lenny Cook film, I saw
- 50:27Speaker 7: that a screening of that and thought, who are these guys?
- 50:29Speaker 7: And they've been crushing it since then. I think we
- 50:31Speaker 7: can conclusively say that Josh is the He is the
- 50:36Speaker 7: brains behind the operation.
- 50:39Speaker 1: Uh typical, you know, very Saffi Brothers, exhilarating anxiety.
- 50:43Speaker 7: Written, very New York, breakneck pace, NonStop. Chalomey is fantastic.
- 50:50Speaker 7: Like you said, it's it's between him and DiCaprio for
- 50:52Speaker 7: the Oscar and I love they They keep doing this
- 50:55Speaker 7: thing where like I've never seen more non actors cast
- 50:59Speaker 7: in a big film, like David Mammott has a small
- 51:03Speaker 7: role able Forrera.
- 51:05Speaker 1: George are unbelievable, He's up, George, George Gervin has Like
- 51:09Speaker 1: these guys are not actors, They're.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Just like Paul's husband of the movie Kevin O'Leary.
- 51:15Speaker 4: There's another one.
- 51:16Speaker 7: Isaac Musrati has a small like the actors in this film.
- 51:22Speaker 7: I loved it, A great film. I really enjoyed it.
- 51:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw an article on Kevin O'Leary is saying
- 51:28Speaker 3: it was the first time he's been yelled at. They
- 51:31Speaker 3: did like twenty takes. He's like, I think we're good, Josh.
- 51:34Speaker 3: Josh's like, no, we're good when I fucking say we're good, yeah,
- 51:36Speaker 3: And Larry's like, oh shit, okay, es this out is.
- 51:40Speaker 1: A man from a shark take. Let's get to more
- 51:43Speaker 1: movie talk somewhat.
- 51:45Speaker 2: Will Ferrell. We always love seeing Will Ferrell like King's Games.
- 51:48Speaker 1: We've seen him where checkered face paint, dress up his
- 51:50Speaker 1: buddy the Elf. But this time New Year's Day, j
- 51:53Speaker 1: D Kings and Lightning Game dressed in full referees gear.
- 51:56Speaker 2: He's even mimicking the.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Refs when they're making calls in the ice. Sometimes I
- 52:00Speaker 1: think things are played out.
- 52:01Speaker 2: I gotta be honest with that. This thought was pretty funny.
- 52:03Speaker 2: The fact he kept what the bit the entire time.
- 52:06Speaker 3: I think, like, I honestly think Will Ferrell is high
- 52:10Speaker 3: on mushrooms every day I just he's living his best life.
- 52:14Speaker 4: Man.
- 52:14Speaker 3: I mean that guy, he's a great advocate for the game,
- 52:17Speaker 3: Like he's a true fan of hockey. And it's fun
- 52:20Speaker 3: to see when you have these celebrities that are big
- 52:21Speaker 3: fans like that. I mean, it's not like he's sitting
- 52:24Speaker 3: up in a suite. He is on ziglass, right, So
- 52:27Speaker 3: it's pretty funny when he's just sitting with What I
- 52:29Speaker 3: think somebody's said is like where did he source all
- 52:32Speaker 3: that gear from? Like he had the official helmet everything,
- 52:34Speaker 3: so I know he's not I wonder if he skates,
- 52:37Speaker 3: like I wonder if he actually skates at all and
- 52:40Speaker 3: plays just for fun or he just loves the game.
- 52:42Speaker 3: So it's always interesting to see these celebrities that are
- 52:45Speaker 3: super fans of the game if they actually skate, because
- 52:48Speaker 3: some of them don't. It's like, you love hockey and
- 52:50Speaker 3: you don't skate at all. I feel like it kind
- 52:52Speaker 3: of goes hand in hand a little bit.
- 52:53Speaker 2: Now, that's a good point.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Like there's guys Dennis Larry's always playing celebrity hockeys. Will
- 52:57Speaker 1: Or Nett a course a big hockey fan. Do you
- 52:58Speaker 1: have a favorite celebrity interaction you have when you play
- 53:00Speaker 1: in the NHL.
- 53:03Speaker 3: I mean when I played in the NHL. I mean
- 53:05Speaker 3: the one I always go to. I was like my
- 53:07Speaker 3: first year in San Jose, my first playoffs, and we
- 53:11Speaker 3: were in LA at the Staples Center, believe it or not.
- 53:13Speaker 3: And I always waited out in the tunnel before we
- 53:17Speaker 3: went on the ice, and I'd kind of give knuckles
- 53:18Speaker 3: to everybody. And so I'm waiting there and I'm sitting
- 53:21Speaker 3: there and it's like two minutes before we go out,
- 53:24Speaker 3: and the couple kids come running by at Staples Center.
- 53:28Speaker 3: I called Staples afore it was Crypto dot com. I
- 53:30Speaker 3: just Staples A better name, better name. So the two
- 53:33Speaker 3: kids walk by and you know, in King's jerseys, and
- 53:35Speaker 3: they're like high five in me, and I'm like, oh,
- 53:37Speaker 3: what's up, guys, And I kind of look up and
- 53:39Speaker 3: their dad kind of walks by and you know, very
- 53:42Speaker 3: you know, sheep, sorry, sorry, sorry for bothering you.
- 53:44Speaker 4: And I look up.
- 53:45Speaker 3: It's David backhum like and it's like my first year,
- 53:48Speaker 3: you know, I'm twenty two, and I'm like holy shit.
- 53:51Speaker 3: So I'm like I'm like whoa, and he goes, hey, man,
- 53:54Speaker 3: he goes like, you might have my kids, like take
- 53:56Speaker 3: a picture with you, and I'm like sure, and I'm
- 54:00Speaker 3: like looking and the coaches room is like right across
- 54:03Speaker 3: the hall, and the media guy who's Tom Holly is
- 54:07Speaker 3: the assistant gam in San Jose. Now I'm like looking
- 54:09Speaker 3: at him and he's kind of like, we go for
- 54:11Speaker 3: it if you want to, like And if if they'd
- 54:13Speaker 3: have caught me doing a picture, I would have been
- 54:15Speaker 3: fucking sent to those I'm saying that I'm like Jesus
- 54:19Speaker 3: Christ is so somewhere. So somewhere in the household of
- 54:23Speaker 3: David Beckham, there's a picture of me, and I tried
- 54:27Speaker 3: to get a hold of it, but there's a picture
- 54:28Speaker 3: of me with his kids. So maybe his kids have
- 54:30Speaker 3: a picture of me on the fridge. But somewhere in
- 54:33Speaker 3: that house there's a picture of me, or on an
- 54:35Speaker 3: iPhone in the iCloud. It's on the cloud somewhere I
- 54:39Speaker 3: have a picture of David Beckham's kids, So.
- 54:42Speaker 4: I love to get it.
- 54:44Speaker 3: I heard I heard Victoria watches the show or listens
- 54:48Speaker 3: to the show. Because we don't have a video element,
- 54:50Speaker 3: so if she's watching poshpice she.
- 54:54Speaker 2: Listen, she'd be one of the show.
- 54:56Speaker 1: If we had a video element, we'd have a chance,
- 54:58Speaker 1: but no video element not happening. All right, last thought
- 55:01Speaker 1: here ready to bear the Seattle cracking last week wondering
- 55:04Speaker 1: about Mason marsh with the Blue Jackets, Jad refused to
- 55:06Speaker 1: take the bait.
- 55:07Speaker 2: He said, they're right in this thing.
- 55:08Speaker 1: Eight one and won their last ten games in a
- 55:10Speaker 1: playoffs the Pacific Division, Vegas, Anaheim, The Kings all struggling
- 55:15Speaker 1: out West. The Crackner a boring team. Let's be honest,
- 55:18Speaker 1: Layne Lambertho is just gonna keep them nice and dry.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Coppocco Eli told them in heading to Italy, they're gonna
- 55:24Speaker 1: be rested after the Olympics.
- 55:26Speaker 2: Can seeatt'll make a run.
- 55:28Speaker 3: On this Pacific Division. That's an emick. And I was
- 55:31Speaker 3: talking about the Olympics to somebody saying the teams that
- 55:35Speaker 3: I was just on the phone with Alex Goldgowski yesterday,
- 55:38Speaker 3: a fan of the show.
- 55:39Speaker 4: Uh, And I said, how worried are you?
- 55:42Speaker 3: You know, I'm like, the Wild's got ten guys going
- 55:45Speaker 3: or eight or ten guys. He's like, I don't love it.
- 55:48Speaker 3: He's like, it's a lot of hockey. It's a lot
- 55:50Speaker 3: of hockey. And I'm like all these teams, these top
- 55:53Speaker 3: teams like Dallas. You know, I looking at Dallas as
- 55:56Speaker 3: like a potential team to sneak. They have a lot
- 55:58Speaker 3: of players, but no Robertson going, so he's going to
- 56:00Speaker 3: be healthy. But you look at all these big teams,
- 56:03Speaker 3: they all get a bunch of guys on floor, and
- 56:05Speaker 3: that's dangerous. Like condensed schedule Olympics, if you're not in
- 56:09Speaker 3: a playoff spot by the time you get to the Olympics,
- 56:15Speaker 3: I think it's really gonna be very difficult to calaw
- 56:17Speaker 3: your way back in after So I really feel like
- 56:19Speaker 3: these fifteen games are going to decide ninety percent of
- 56:24Speaker 3: the playoff teams. I think it really is this last
- 56:27Speaker 3: push because once you come back, you know, who knows
- 56:31Speaker 3: it's gonna happen in the Olympics. If guys are injured,
- 56:32Speaker 3: guys are gonna be exhausted coming back, and you don't
- 56:35Speaker 3: have much time once you get back. I mean, you're
- 56:37Speaker 3: on this final you know what is it. They're going
- 56:40Speaker 3: to be probably around close to sixty games, so you
- 56:43Speaker 3: have twenty games stretch. I mean, it's gonna be interesting
- 56:46Speaker 3: to see. So I think Seattle can do it with
- 56:49Speaker 3: with so many guys. I mean, you look at I
- 56:51Speaker 3: don't get it. It makes no sense to me. They've
- 56:54Speaker 3: went on this run since Lane Lambert had that media
- 56:57Speaker 3: scrum when he only allowed the team reporter or the
- 57:01Speaker 3: team media guy to ask him questions and he nixt
- 57:04Speaker 3: anybody else from asking them questions.
- 57:05Speaker 4: There's one on one.
- 57:06Speaker 3: I mean, that's a bad look. Come on, there's a
- 57:08Speaker 3: bad look. But they've been on a run since. So
- 57:09Speaker 3: Lane Lambert pulling all the right strings. But you got
- 57:12Speaker 3: Philip Grew, Philip Grubauer, resurgence, Joey Decord. Not one guy's
- 57:17Speaker 3: got over thirty points on this team. It's like, how
- 57:21Speaker 3: the fuck are they doing it? But they just pull
- 57:23Speaker 3: it off, And I like, personally, honestly, I've watched a
- 57:26Speaker 3: couple of games. I haven't watched many Seattle games because yeah,
- 57:28Speaker 3: they're done. I got to focus on teams that are
