- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, mate.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: That's what you got the club for.
- 0:50unknown: We do.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Just get to appreciate the vinyls we've already got.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: We do.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: And you gave me some homework, Maxwell.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: And it's Eyes Open by Snow Patrol.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: It's uh the favourite band of um both The Office and Gray's Anatomy.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: I tell you what, Grey's Anatomy fucking love a bit of Snow Patrol.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: It's a Snow Day on set.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: It is a Snow Day on set.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: But this album is one of the most complete albums, I reckon, of the 2000s.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: I feel 2006?
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: 2006.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: So people, when you hear this album, will think chasing cars.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: That's the first song you think of.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: But I'm going to give you some insight into the Channel 7 Saturday Arvo team.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Mate, let's do it.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Oh Melbourne Laughlin.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: You don't get that joke, do you?
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: It's uh Bruce McAvaney.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Thanks, Basil.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: We're down.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Let me tell you a bit about the Saturday Avo team.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: Let's go with uh BT.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Um no, 2006 was such a big year for music in Australia.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Um the number ones in Australia, physical number ones.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: As in on the aria charts.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: On the aria charts.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: Sexy back, Justin Timberlake, Hipstone Lyle Shakira.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: The longest running number one in 2006 gives us both the ick, but it's I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker by Sandy Tom.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Shit song.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: That's I'll tell you what, I have not thought about that song in years.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Terrible song.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Um flowers in my hair.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: SOS, Rihanna, Flaunted TV Rock, Run It, Chris Brown, I Don't Feel Like Dancing, Scissor Sisters.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Banger.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Love Generation, Bob Sinclair.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Banger.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Big year.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, good year, good year.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: So what's baffling, I did some research.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: Chasing Cars wasn't a number one.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: It only peaked at 53 on the RE charts because it didn't get put it put in Gray's Anatomy for another year or something.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: It had no physical release in Australia.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: So ironically, and it speaks to how good this song is compared to the other songs, is that it spent 10 weeks at number one on the digital only charts.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Um imagine what could have been.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: What could have been?
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Little Irish Rockers.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Little Irish rockers.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: But look, diving into the album, I was expecting emo, I was expecting Brit Rock, I was expecting a bit of sadness.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Um, and just scenes of Grey's Anatomy characters dying.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yep.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: But I got that in spades.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: In spades, absolute bucket loads, Sam.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: And it's so well done, it's so complete, and it's such a beautiful album as well.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: But I was shocked at how many songs I actually knew.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Beyond just the singles.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: So everyone knows Chasing Cars.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna start with the the main ones.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Chasing Cars, Chef's Kiss, Master Choice.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Chasing Cars.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: I would not say this is their best song, though.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, but absolutely not.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: But it's a banger.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Then you've got hands open.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Not to be confused with open your eyes.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: It's hands open.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Another banger that unlocks so many memories and nostalgia for me.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: I found myself singing along and I had no idea that my brain like remembered this song.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: You were just locked in.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Locked in.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: But um, you're all I have.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: The opening track.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: So clean out.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: That one, yeah, yeah.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: And I thought, fuck, this was in Sky High.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: It wasn't.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: With uh Danielle Panabaker and um Kurt Russell.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: Kurt Russell?
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: And the late uh Kelly Preston.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Was she in that she was, wasn't she?
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: She was the hot mum.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Who's the uh uh the girl from Scott Pilgrim, who's the bad Mary Elizabeth Winston?
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's in it as well.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: She's the evil one.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: Spoiler alert.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, sorry.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: 2007 massive film Sky.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: I love that movie.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: It's a good movie, it's a good film.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: It's a great movie.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: But that song is so shimmery and glisteny, and um, it was one that featured heavily on Grey's Anatomy.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: It was also in Guitar Hero 5.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Sick.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's just so nostalgic, lots of oohs and ah's, and then it gets to the course, and you're like, fuck, I do know this song, I've heard this somewhere.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Any Grey's Anatomy compilation ever.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: But diving through the album, shut your eyes.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: It had a lot more experimentation than I was sort of prepared for from a snow patrol album.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: It's got radio head influence with the instrumental, I want to say like controlled chaos.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: And then it comes into this dreamy sort of twinkly vocal, and I was it could have been on Kid A or In Rainbows.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Saying the album name Kid A isn't shining it.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Makes it really sound like an Eshe.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Kid A.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Kid A.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Eshe.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Itwa Bra.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Idka.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: It's Itoi Bra.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Um, it's beginning to get me make this go on forever, Headlights on a Dark Road.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: They all kind of fell into the same pot for me of this um dark Irish night.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Just stumbled out of a pub.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: But it's great storytelling, it's got amazing dynamic throughout all the three of these songs, and they balance emotion and instrumentation really well.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: Um, it feels sad, but it also feels hopeful, I think is how I would sum up the majority of Snow Patrol songs.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Um, You Could Be Happy.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: I knew this song as well.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Um, it was another song that I feel like they had a first wave of singles.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: And then they had a second wave that with the success of the album just swept through.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: But it's kind of like a nursery rhyme chime to start the song, and then it goes into this harrowing little love lost song.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Um, fuck off.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Bit of forlorn.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Bit of forlorn, yes, exactly.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: But uh again, another song that I was shocked that I remembered, and it's just like a really nice nostalgia to revisit.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: Um, set the fire to the third bar.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Wasn't familiar with this one at all, but it's got a collaboration with Martha Wainwright.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Um, Rufus's brother.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: But it really helps break up any potential for monotony in the album.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: I feel like it comes at the right time.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Just gonna turn my phone upside down.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Someone's someone's getting some uh test messages.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Stating with Gail.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: She did message me, yeah.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: She's like, I have single friends.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: I'm like, really?
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Well, what about you, Gail?
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: How do I get my hands on the merchandise?
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: She did message, so she sent me a message request and then said, Do you know what you're in for?
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: And I was like, tell me, tell me, Gail.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: She goes, You're completely fucked.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Gail, you you feral minks.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: I've been a bad boy.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Put me in cuffies.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: Look, brother up.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Sorry, you can't hear my hands clapping together.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: I've been a bad boy.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: Slapping them cheeks.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Shout out our Brisbane listeners, you'll know who the famous stadium with Gail is.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Everyone else, no idea.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: But um, yeah, set the fire to the third bar.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: That collaboration was really beautiful, and it it kind of their voices worked really well together, which often with collabs and duets they don't.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: Then we get on to open your eyes, which for me is nearly their magnum opus.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Nearly?
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: They have one song that's not on this album that I would say is their best song.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: Take back the city.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: Signal fire.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, that is a good song.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: I'll take that.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: It was on Spider-Man 3.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, not bad.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Not bad.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Banger.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: I would I probably wouldn't put it.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: See, yeah, well, let's not get into the specifics, but yeah.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: If you're looking at numbers, open your eyes, chasing cars are probably their magnum opus, but I think Signal Fire.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: See, Hands Open is the one that I I drift towards the most.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: But uh Open Your Eyes, it's an absolute banger.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: It's been used in so, so many movies and TV shows.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Um sad scenes, happy scenes, a soundtrack to so many of life's big moments I've got in here.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: But um I've got, yeah, their Magnum Opus, second to only maybe signal fire.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Their penultimate opus, if you will.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: For those that don't I'll pull it up.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: You can let me know.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: We'll do a competition.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: So I'll play you some of the singles.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Sam was just uh unraveling quite a large chord, and then he was also plugging his computer in.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: It wouldn't have been my chord.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: I didn't say it was.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna play Chasing Cars because we've all we all know it.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: We all know it, but I'll play a bit of open your eyes and you can skip to the chorus.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Please do once I find it.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: Thanks.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Everyone knows that song.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Big moment.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: This is Signalfire.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna play you this and you tell me what you think.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: This is this came out five years later, three years later.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: How we run things.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: Things don't run way.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: Gone finger.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: No, I playing it.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Open your eyes is so much better.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: I'm glad you came to that conclusion on your own.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: I'm glad that we we led you there and you were able to understand it.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: No, I did it myself, and some of it's okay.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Seven of it's still a good song.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: It's just but it's not open your eyes.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: And to finish off, the finish line, Maxwell.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: A beautiful, atmospheric, and ambient way to close out an otherwise very, very good album.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: I it's this record to me, an album that I was quite obsessed with in high school, uh, when it like came out, and when I was, you know, I probably had it on CD and burnt it under my iTunes account or something like that.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Hell yeah.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: And then I just it kind of fell off my radar for a little while.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: And I'm so glad that I saw it recently and picked it up.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: And I was just like, God, it is it is a fantastic record.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: It's a great album.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: You can just put it on the background and have a great time.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Well, not a great time.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: You can have a sad time.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: But a but a hopeful time.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: It is hopeful.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: It's optimistic.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: It's like this is my lowest point.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: But it only goes up from here.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: I'm in the gutter looking at the stars.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: That's a good way to do it.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: That's a common saying.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: I didn't make that up.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: So poetic of you, Maxwell.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: Um, your homework.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what do you got for me this week, Sam?
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: Etou bra.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: Oh, we are.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Brother Kid A by Radiohead.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: Kid A out of Sydney.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Pretty much, because we're going for, I reckon, Australia's most underrated but polarizing band.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: Sonically.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: So I'm going to give you Trek by Shady Nasty.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: They are a band that yeah.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: A band that people just don't get in Australia.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: You get it or you don't get it.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: They're your favorite musicians, favorite musicians.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: Big with uh Ketama for Fred again.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: I was going to say Fortet, but I mean probably.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Vacations famously love Shady Nasty.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Uh Wayside, big fans of Shady Nasty.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: I saw them earlier in the year.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: They were incredible, great raw energy.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: And I am one that very much enjoys their sound.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Um I got in through their song Hardstyle, which is on the album, and they kind of they're like jazz-trained musicians who like rap who went to a hardcore show.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that yeah, that's not a bad way to describe them, to be fair.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: It's there's if you haven't heard Shaddy Nasty, you've got a week to prepare yourself.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: There's a lot happening.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: A lot at all times.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: And they're only a three-piece, which is quite impressive.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: A thruple, if you will.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: A thruple.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: But that's my homework for you.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: Any vinyl thoughts for the week, Sam?
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: No.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm excited to get my hands on the new holding absence that drops next week.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Um and the the effort they've put into that looks incredible.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: So I'm keen for that.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: What about you?
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: But a lovely.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Not really.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Um I I one thing I think we should have done at Big Sound was go for a little crate dig.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: But it was a very busy week, so I don't I don't blame us, you know.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: We're busy chatting to everyone.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Tings to do, Sam.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Tings to do.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Little tings.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: Well um ciao.
