Transcript
- 0:00Hi, everyone. This is Chanel Banger with Becker's
- 0:02Healthcare. Thank you so much for tuning in
- 0:04to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series.
- 0:06Healthcare IT teams are stretched thin, often stuck
- 0:09in daily operations instead of driving strategy.
- 0:12This episode explores how the right IT partner
- 0:15can take on essential maintenance so internal IT
- 0:17leaders, especially those in rural and community hospital
- 0:20settings, can focus on modernization
- 0:22and long term planning.
- 0:24We'll discuss why IT struggles to gain strategic
- 0:26influence,
- 0:27how partnership adds stability and expertise, and how
- 0:30reducing reactive workloads and adding scalable support can
- 0:33shift IT from a support function to a
- 0:35strategic asset. Joining me for today's discussion is
- 0:39Phil Sobel, CCO at Cerricor.
- 0:41Phil, Phil, thank you so much for joining
- 0:43me today. Oh, Chanel, happy to be here.
- 0:45Perfect. Well, to get us started, for people
- 0:47who may not be familiar with Cericor,
- 0:49what do you do, and what truly differentiates
- 0:51you from other health care IT companies?
- 0:54So Cericor is an IT professional and managed
- 0:57services firm, and we focus exclusively
- 1:01on the
- 1:02provider space from a health care perspective.
- 1:05So we offer IT and application support. We
- 1:08offer EHR
- 1:10implementation
- 1:10and optimization
- 1:12across the three major platforms that exist today,
- 1:14Epic, Oracle Health, and Meditech.
- 1:17Technical networking services,
- 1:20both from a hosting perspective in a private
- 1:23cloud as well as the public cloud,
- 1:25outsourced IT and cyber leadership, and then just
- 1:28general IT contingent labor as well.
- 1:31When you look at our differentiators,
- 1:33I would say it starts with the fact
- 1:35that we're we're really focused
- 1:38and born out of the provider space. So
- 1:41we take a little bit of a different
- 1:43look and perspective,
- 1:45really provider first versus technology services firm first,
- 1:49And that makes all the difference in the
- 1:50world. A vast majority of our employees have
- 1:53worked in the hospitals,
- 1:55and that's that's the kind of their heritage
- 1:57and their genesis. And so
- 1:59the way we look at things is truly
- 2:02as an extension
- 2:04of our clients' team.
- 2:07And, you know, our tagline is being the
- 2:09link to life saving care,
- 2:11and we really challenge our employees
- 2:14to be able to clearly articulate just what
- 2:16that means in the role that they play
- 2:18day in and day out. How does how
- 2:21do they impact it maybe one step away,
- 2:24two steps away?
- 2:26What's happening at the bedside? And that's that's
- 2:29kind of our differentiator.
- 2:31Got it. Got it. And now getting into
- 2:32the meat of the podcast a bit, rural
- 2:34and community hospital leaders often wear multiple hats
- 2:36with little backup.
- 2:38What does meaningful practical support look like for
- 2:40leaders in that environment?
- 2:43Rural has always been a challenge. I I
- 2:45think it's continuing to to get
- 2:48harder.
- 2:50And, really, it starts with
- 2:52understanding.
- 2:53And I think that goes back to what
- 2:55I talked about a little bit earlier, which
- 2:56is becoming truly becoming an extension of their
- 2:59organization. So it's coming in and understanding the
- 3:01community,
- 3:03understanding their challenges,
- 3:05understanding,
- 3:05you know, where they're trying to take that
- 3:08rural hospital
- 3:10health system practice,
- 3:11understanding the makeup of the board,
- 3:13and and really building that trust,
- 3:16not
- 3:17only for the just a short term gain,
- 3:19but really for the long term. And so
- 3:21I shared,
- 3:23just a few weeks back,
- 3:25on a, a webinar, with with Becker's,
- 3:28a story about one of our clients,
- 3:30in Texas, a rural hospital,
- 3:32about 45 beds.
- 3:34You know, we've been working with them now
- 3:35for over seven years.
- 3:38When we showed up, they they had a
- 3:40lot of challenges going on. The board had
- 3:42just replaced,
- 3:43the c suite
- 3:44because
- 3:45the the previous one wasn't getting the job
- 3:47done, and they they turned to us and
- 3:49said we need some help.
- 3:51And so we came in and partnered with
- 3:53them, and it took it was a five
- 3:55year plan from where they were to IT
- 3:58modernization,
- 3:59which then allowed them to be on a
- 4:02current platform
- 4:04that was sustainable
- 4:06going forward, and that makes all the difference.
- 4:08That's amazing to hear. And now staffing shortages
- 4:11are hitting hospital IT teams hard. How do
- 4:13you help stabilize operations and fill gaps without
- 4:16forcing clients into a constant cycle of hiring
- 4:18and retraining?
- 4:20Yeah. Great great question, and it's a challenge
- 4:22that is,
- 4:24top of mind for everyone, particularly in the
- 4:27not just in in the IT space, but
- 4:28across the board for rural, but in particular
- 4:31for IT. I think some of that challenge
- 4:33was really
- 4:34exacerbated with COVID, where all of a sudden
- 4:37this whole push work from home,
- 4:40you you found that even the talent that
- 4:42was in the rural
- 4:43communities was getting scooped up in a remote
- 4:46capacity by organizations
- 4:48that were
- 4:49many instances hundreds of miles away.
- 4:52And so that that made the the problem
- 4:55just exponentially worse. And then the the, you
- 4:57know, when you look at the amount of
- 5:00time it takes to recruit for some of
- 5:02these positions,
- 5:03and then if you can't find them from
- 5:05a talent perspective,
- 5:07train. And then by the time you get
- 5:08them trained,
- 5:09they're on to the next thing. You know,
- 5:11in many instances,
- 5:13these larger organizations
- 5:14are paying, you know, 30%
- 5:17more. So it's a challenge. And and, really,
- 5:20it's a it's a mindset
- 5:22set shift a little bit for the c
- 5:24level when it comes to,
- 5:26do I need to have all these people
- 5:28local,
- 5:29Or can I work with a partner who
- 5:31has access to the talent
- 5:34and, you know, maybe use some of that
- 5:36in a fractional capacity?
- 5:38Or
- 5:39in some cases, you know, maybe for a
- 5:41year or two from a stabilization
- 5:43standpoint.
- 5:45And and so
- 5:46if you can get through that mind shift
- 5:48to say, okay. Wait a minute. Here's what
- 5:50my organization
- 5:51needs. I can't find it locally, so how
- 5:54do I turn to a partner organization
- 5:57that has that capability,
- 5:59who brings to the table
- 6:02perspective,
- 6:03experience,
- 6:04and that talent,
- 6:06and who will work with the organization,
- 6:09understanding, buying into the mission,
- 6:11but in a in such a way that's
- 6:13respectful
- 6:15of the local organization,
- 6:16the local team,
- 6:18and the budget constraints.
- 6:20And if you can find a partner like
- 6:22that, then all of a sudden, those talent
- 6:25woes
- 6:26go away, and you can have access to
- 6:28the right talent
- 6:30for the right duration at the right time.
- 6:32For sure. And say a hospital does decide
- 6:35to partner with you guys. When Cericore steps
- 6:37in to support day to day IT operations,
- 6:40what typically changes first, and what kind of
- 6:42strategic work do leaders finally have the space
- 6:44to focus on?
- 6:46Yeah. I I I think the first thing
- 6:48that changes
- 6:51is we come in and we do an
- 6:52evaluation
- 6:53and an assessment,
- 6:54and then we document
- 6:56everything.
- 6:57So everything from
- 6:59the inventory, the applications,
- 7:01the processes,
- 7:02the workflows,
- 7:04because you have to know what you're starting
- 7:06with in order to then build
- 7:09the road map going forward and to then
- 7:12to be able to educate senior leadership and
- 7:14the board as to here's where you are,
- 7:17here's where you need to go, and here's
- 7:19the why.
- 7:20And then working through and saying, okay.
- 7:23Here are the top priorities that need to
- 7:25be addressed.
- 7:27Let's work together
- 7:29on those. Here's what that investment looks like.
- 7:31Here's what that return looks like. And so
- 7:33it truly becomes a collaborative process, but you
- 7:36can't do that without
- 7:38the baseline.
- 7:39And we have never walked into an organization
- 7:42that had all that documented in the in
- 7:44rural health. It just it it's it's a
- 7:46challenge for urban as well.
- 7:49But in rural health especially because they just
- 7:51don't have the time
- 7:53to do it. And when you don't have
- 7:54the time, you can't lay out that plan,
- 7:57and so you get stuck a little bit
- 7:59in just
- 8:00paralysis.
- 8:02And so that's really the first thing. And
- 8:03then once
- 8:05once we come in and do that, it
- 8:06really does then free up leadership to be
- 8:09able to make decisions,
- 8:10to have a clear vision and road map
- 8:13of as to
- 8:15how they can modernize and what it's gonna
- 8:17take to modernize.
- 8:19And once you have that clear plan,
- 8:22it it brings the anxiety down. Yes. Is
- 8:24there a lot to do? Sure. But you
- 8:26have a a documented,
- 8:28well thought out road map to execute on.
- 8:31Absolutely. That makes a lot of sense. And
- 8:33now I have one more question for you.
- 8:34IT is often viewed as a cost center.
- 8:37How do you help health care leaders reframe
- 8:39that narrative with their boards toward quality, safety,
- 8:41and patient outcomes? Yes.
- 8:44You know, I think over the years, we
- 8:45we've made
- 8:46progress in this, but there's still a ways
- 8:49to go.
- 8:50Technical folks love to talk in terms of
- 8:52IT. They love to talk in terms of
- 8:55systems and technical platforms,
- 8:58but that's not what resonates, particularly in in
- 9:00rural health where you've got a board of
- 9:03directors that they, one, that they're not technologists.
- 9:06Two, they're probably not really all that familiar,
- 9:10more or less, with hospital operations. They they
- 9:12own the local
- 9:14restaurants. They own the local, maybe hotel, motel,
- 9:18you know, pillars of the community,
- 9:20but this isn't what they do on a
- 9:22day in and day out basis.
- 9:24And so
- 9:25you have to speak to them in in
- 9:27in terms, and I would say, stories
- 9:30that resonate. And the stories that are gonna
- 9:33resonate with them
- 9:34are stories
- 9:35about how
- 9:37IT
- 9:38supports
- 9:40the patient experience
- 9:41and how IT supports the clinical
- 9:45experience as well for clinicians because they all
- 9:48know, hey. We have to have those doctors,
- 9:51from a local standpoint. Otherwise, we're we're in
- 9:53deep trouble. And so they're very, very cognizant
- 9:56of that. And so it it it goes
- 9:57to speaking to the stories,
- 9:59not the technology.
- 10:01Because
- 10:02IT
- 10:02really is one of the main driving forces
- 10:05that allow for modern health systems to be
- 10:08able to deliver
- 10:10safe and reliable care.
- 10:12Anymore IT is the underpinning
- 10:16for all of that, but you have to
- 10:18tell the story.
- 10:20And I think
- 10:21recently, we had,
- 10:23we had this big push with Ambient.
- 10:26Right?
- 10:27And I think that's a great story for
- 10:29folks to tell. And it's not about the
- 10:31technology
- 10:32per se, but it's about
- 10:34what the technology
- 10:36did transformationally
- 10:38to truly help with not only the clinician
- 10:42experience,
- 10:43but what that meant
- 10:44for the patient experience as well. Now all
- 10:47of a sudden as a patient,
- 10:49your clinician, your physician is looking at you.
- 10:52They're having a conversation
- 10:54with you. They're not
- 10:57sitting there typing.
- 10:58They're not looking at the screen. They're actually
- 11:00having the conversation with you, and then all
- 11:02of a sudden you feel as a patient
- 11:05seen,
- 11:06heard,
- 11:06understood.
- 11:08And that's the underpinning. That's the value of
- 11:11IT. And so it's leveraging and using those
- 11:14stories
- 11:15effectively
- 11:17to the c suite and to the board
- 11:19of directors. And when you can do that
- 11:21as an IT leader,
- 11:23you're much better off. I love how you
- 11:25frame that. Well, Phil, I wanna thank you
- 11:26for your time today. But before I let
- 11:28you go, is there anything else that listeners
- 11:29should know?
- 11:31You know, I just think that
- 11:32at the end of the day,
- 11:34we all face these challenges,
- 11:36and and we all have choices to make.
- 11:39And, you know, the choices in technology,
- 11:42choices in, you know, what service lines we
- 11:44have to add. But, ultimately, the underpinning is
- 11:46what's best for the community, what's best for
- 11:49the the patients that we serve. And it's
- 11:52picking
- 11:53partners
- 11:54that come alongside you in that journey that
- 11:57buy into your mission
- 11:58that can truly make an impactful difference for
- 12:00you. Absolutely. Well, Phil, I wanna thank you
- 12:03once again for your time and insights today,
- 12:05and we also wanna thank our podcast sponsor,
- 12:07Ceracor.
